1:1
You yourself know, venerable father Primasius, that, being aware of my life and my way of living, just as I do not deny that I have a zeal for the divine law, so I do not presume to call myself a teacher, fearing that prophetic word: 'But to the sinner God said: Why dost thou declare my justices, and take my covenant in thy mouth?' But while the advantage of your province had compelled you, among your other most reverend fellow-bishops, to journey even as far as Constantinople, out of a feeling of courtesy we came into acquaintance and conversation. And you, after that custom of yours, asked nothing before this: whether there were anyone among the Greeks who burned with zeal and understanding for the study of the divine books.
To this I replied that I had seen a certain man, Paul by name, a Persian by race, who had been instructed in the school of the Syrians in the city of Nisibis, where the divine law is handed down by public masters in order and according to rule, just as among us in worldly studies grammar and rhetoric are. 2. Then, having long been asked whether I had anything from his sayings, I said that I had read certain rules with which he was accustomed to imbue the minds of his disciples—instructed in the surface of the divine Scriptures—before he laid open the depths of exposition, so that they might in the meantime come to know the intention and order of those very subjects which are treated in the divine law, lest the several matters should be taught scatteredly and confusedly, but according to rule.
1:3
Haec tu, pater, nescio qua ratione omnibus Christianis erudiri uolentibus necessaria iudicasti, excusantemque me diu usque ad editionis impudentiam compulisti, unde in duos breuissimos libellos regularia haec instituta collegi, addens ipsius dictionis, quantum potui, utilem formam, ut uelut magistro interrogante et respondentibus discipulis breuiter singula et perlucide dicerentur; et ne aliqua confusio per antiquariorum, ut assolet, neglegentiam proueniret, magistro [Delta] Graecam litteram, discipulis [Mu] praeposui, ut ex peregrinis characteribus, et quibus Latina scriptura non utitur, error omnis penitus auferatur. 3. Sunt alia illius uiri praeclara monumenta:
You, father, judged—by what reasoning I do not know—that these matters were necessary for all Christians who wish to be instructed; and though I long made excuses, you pressed me to the point of the shamelessness of publication. Hence I have gathered these regular precepts into two very brief little books, adding, as far as I could, a useful form to the very wording, so that, as though a master were questioning and disciples answering, each point might be stated briefly and very clearly. And lest any confusion should arise through the negligence of the copyists, as is wont to happen, I set the Greek letter [Delta] before the master and [Mu] before the disciples, so that by means of foreign characters, which Latin writing does not employ, every error might be utterly removed. 3. There are other splendid monuments of that man:
for I also heard him expounding the epistle of the blessed Paul to the Romans with a subtlety, as I think, greater than that with which I, from his own mouth, took it down lest it slip from memory; but the thorns of cares and business hinder us from bearing any fruit in the Lord's field. This one act of boldness is enough, that out of confessed poverty I dare to cast these two mites into the divine treasury. There are those who load it with talents, from which provision may be doled out to the needy; who can offer to the divine sanctuaries the gems of virtues, the gold of life, the silver of knowledge. To me nothing more is at hand than these two mites, and these themselves borrowed from another.
1:5
Verum enimuero multum mihi de euangelico examinatore polliceor, quia licet alii ex pretiosissimis pretiosa et ex plurimis ualeant plura largiri, ego tamen, quia totum dedi, plus obtuli. Liber Primus. 1. De partibus diuinae legis. [Delta] In quot primas partes legis diuinae scientia diuiditur? [Mu] In duas, quarum una ad ipsam superficiem dictionis proprie pertinet, alia in rebus est quas ipsa scriptura nos edocet. 2. Quae pertinent ad superficiem scripturarum? [Delta] Ad ipsam superficiem dictionis proprie pertinentia quot sunt? [Mu] Quinque. [Delta] Quae? [Mu] Species dictionis, auctoritas, conscriptor, modus, ordo. 2. [Delta] Species dictionis quot sunt? [Mu] Quattuor:
But indeed I promise myself much from the Gospel examiner, because, although others may be able to give precious things out of most precious treasures and many things out of very many, I nevertheless, because I gave my whole, offered more. Book One. 1. On the parts of the divine law. [Delta] Into how many primary parts is the knowledge of the divine law divided? [Mu] Into two, of which one pertains properly to the very surface of the wording, the other lies in the things which Scripture itself teaches us. 2. What things pertain to the surface of the Scriptures? [Delta] How many are the things pertaining properly to the very surface of the wording? [Mu] Five. [Delta] Which? [Mu] The kind of wording, authority, author, mode, and order. 2. [Delta] How many are the kinds of wording? [Mu] Four:
3. De historia. [Delta] Historia quid est? [Mu] Praeteritarum rerum praesentiumue narratio. 2. [Delta] In quibus libris diuina continetur historia? [Mu] In XVII: Genesis I, Exodi I, Leuitici I, Numerorum I, Deuteronomii I, Iesu Naue I, Iudicum I, Ruth I, Regum--secundum nos IV, secundum Hebraeos II--, Euangeliorum IV: secundum Matthaeum, secundum Marcum, secundum Lucam, secundum Ioannem, Actuum apostolorum I. [Delta] Nulli alii libri ad diuinam historiam pertinent? [Mu] Adiungunt plures Paralipomenon II, Iob I, Tobiae I, Esdrae I, Iudith I, Esther I, Machabaeorum II.
for it is either historical, or prophetic, or proverbial, or simply teaching. 3. On history. [Delta] What is history? [Mu] The narration of past or present things. 2. [Delta] In which books is the divine history contained? [Mu] In seventeen: Genesis, one; Exodus, one; Leviticus, one; Numbers, one; Deuteronomy, one; Joshua, one; Judges, one; Ruth, one; Kings—according to us four, according to the Hebrews two—; the Gospels, four: according to Matthew, according to Mark, according to Luke, according to John; the Acts of the Apostles, one. [Delta] Do no other books pertain to the divine history? [Mu] Many add two of Chronicles, one of Job, one of Tobit, one of Ezra, one of Judith, one of Esther, two of Maccabees.
[Mu] Quoniam apud Hebraeos quoque super hac differentia recipiebantur, sicut Hieronymus ceterique testantur. 3. [Delta] Nulla in his libris alia species inuenitur?
[Delta] Why do these books not run among the canonical Scriptures? [Mu] Because among the Hebrews too they were received with this same distinction, as Jerome and others testify. 3. [Delta] Is no other kind found in these books? [Mu] The rest occur, but not principally; for although the persons by whom they are spoken first spoke according to the other kinds, yet by him who wrote the book they are reported as history: just as the blessings of the patriarch Jacob were spoken by him indeed as prophecies, but Moses, who reports them, narrates them in historical order. And when Moses himself says that in the beginning heaven and earth were made, he speaks indeed by a prophetic spirit, but narrates in the historical kind.
Likewise history sometimes sounds even proverbial, as is, "The trees went forth to anoint a king over themselves." Sometimes it simply teaches, as is, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God is one God." Yet all things, as I said, are woven together in the historical kind. 4. [Delta] In what does history excel the other kinds? [Mu] In that the others are subject to it, but it to none. 5. [Delta] What has it in common with the others? [Mu] It has in common with simple teaching that both seem plain on the surface, though for the most part they are difficult to understand; for the others are the reverse. 4. On prophecy. [Delta] What is prophecy? [Mu] The manifestation, by divine inspiration, of hidden things past, present, or future. 2.
1:9
[Delta] Da in praeteritis prophetiam. [Delta] Da in praesentibus. [Mu] Cognitionem furti facti a Giezi propheta in praesenti uidit, et Ananiae ac Saphirae Petrus apostolus. [Delta] Da in futuris.
[Delta] Give an instance of prophecy concerning past things. [Mu] "By the word of the Lord the heavens were established," and "for he himself spoke, and they were made," and "In the beginning God made heaven and earth." [Delta] Give an instance concerning present things. [Mu] The prophet saw in the present the knowledge of the theft committed by Gehazi, and the apostle Peter that of Ananias and Sapphira. [Delta] Give an instance concerning future things. [Mu] "Behold, a virgin shall conceive in her womb and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel." 3. [Delta] Why was "hidden" placed in the definition? [Mu] Because if anyone should speak of things already known, even though they be future, he is nonetheless not a prophet, just as we, when we proclaim the resurrection, are not prophets. But if he should make manifest the hidden things of any time, then he is a prophet, as we have already shown.
1:10
Ecce apostolus prophetiae uim in occultorum manifestatione signauit. 4. [Delta] Quare addidimus 'ex diuina inspiratione'?
[Delta] Prove this by a testimony of divine Scripture. [Mu] The apostle Paul, in the first epistle to the Corinthians, says, "If the whole church come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there enter in the unlearned, will they not say that you are mad? But if all prophesy, and there enter in one who is an unbeliever or unlearned, he is convicted by all, he is judged by all; the hidden things of his heart are made manifest, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God, declaring that 'God is manifestly among you.'" Behold, the apostle marked the power of prophecy in the manifestation of hidden things. But many other such things are also found in what follows in the same epistle and in the rest. 4. [Delta] Why did we add "by divine inspiration"?
5. [Delta] In quibus libris prophetia suscipitur? [Mu] In XVII: Psalmorum CL liber I, Oseae liber I, Isaiae liber I, Ioel liber I, Amos liber I, Abdiae liber I, Ionae liber I, Michaeae liber I, Nahum liber I, Habacuc liber I, Sophoniae liber I, Ieremiae liber I, Ezechiel liber I, Daniel liber I, Aggaei liber I, Zachariae liber I, Malachiae liber I. Ceterum de Ioannis Apocalypsi apud orientales admodum dubitatur. 6. [Delta] Nulla in his libris alia species inuenitur?
[Mu] Because those who, whether by the prompting of demons or by other means, speak of hidden things, although they may be called prophets, are nevertheless not numbered among the authors of the divine Scriptures. 5. [Delta] In which books is prophecy received? [Mu] In seventeen: the Psalms, one book of 150; Hosea, one book; Isaiah, one book; Joel, one book; Amos, one book; Obadiah, one book; Jonah, one book; Micah, one book; Nahum, one book; Habakkuk, one book; Zephaniah, one book; Jeremiah, one book; Ezekiel, one book; Daniel, one book; Haggai, one book; Zechariah, one book; Malachi, one book. As for the Apocalypse of John, however, it is very much doubted among the Easterners. 6. [Delta] Is no other kind found in these books?
[Mu] The rest occur, but not principally, except for the proof of the prophecy, just as in Isaiah a kind of history is recounted concerning the kings Ahaz and Hezekiah; but the intent of prophecy is not to weave together deeds, but to confirm the outcome of things foretold. And in Jeremiah, when it is said, "O earth, earth, hear the word of the Lord," by "earth" it proverbially names the men dwelling in it. And when Isaiah says, "Not such a fast have I chosen, says the Lord, but loose every knot of iniquity," and the rest, he seems simply to teach, but he proclaims these things as one commanded by the prophetic Spirit. 7. [Delta] What has prophecy in common with the others? [Mu] It has in common with proverbs that both are difficult on the surface, but most are not hard to understand. 5.
1:13
De prouerbiis. [Delta] Quae est prouerbialis species? [Mu] Quaedam figurata locutio, aliud sonans, aliud sentiens, et in praesenti commonens tempore. 2. [Delta] In quibus libris haec accipitur? [Mu] In duobus: Salomonis prouerbiorum liber I et Iesu, filii Sirach, liber I. [Delta] Nullus alius liber huic speciei subditur? 3. [Delta] Accidunt et in his libris aliae species?
On proverbs. [Delta] What is the proverbial kind? [Mu] A certain figurative manner of speech, sounding one thing and meaning another, and admonishing in the present time. 2. [Delta] In which books is this received? [Mu] In two: the one book of the Proverbs of Solomon, and the one book of Jesus, son of Sirach. [Delta] Is no other book placed under this kind? [Mu] Some add the book which is called Wisdom and the Song of Songs. 3. [Delta] Do other kinds occur in these books as well? [Mu] Only simple teaching occurs, but not principally, except for the explanation or commendation of the proverbs, as is, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." 4. [Delta] What has the proverbial kind in common with the others?
[Mu] It has in common with prophecy that it seems difficult on the surface, though for the most part it is not so in understanding. 5. [Delta] What does the proverbial kind have proper to itself? [Mu] That neither history nor prophecy is mingled with it, and it alone is so understood that in a certain way the surface of the words is removed. 6. [Delta] Why is it lawful for us in this kind alone not to consider the very text of Scripture but the sense, whereas in the other three we admit allegory mystically in such a way that it is necessary to maintain the trustworthiness of the narrative? [Mu] Because if, apart from the proverbial kind, we should wish to receive allegory everywhere in such a way that the truth of the narrative were weakened, we would give place to enemies to interpret the divine books however they wished. 7.
1:15
[Delta] Quot modis in diuina lege allegoria cognoscitur? [Mu] Quattuor: aut secundum translationem, uel metaphoram, ut est, "Iratus est Dominus" et "Descendit," et similia quae ad insinuandas causas ex humanis motibus transferuntur ad Deum: aut secundum imaginationem, uel hypotyposin, ut est in euangelio, "Homo quidam descendebat ab Hierosolymis in Iericho"; et rursus, parabola uineae atque agricolarum; ordo enim eorum quae gerebantur a Christo, uelut imagine personae et negotii alterius, refertur impletus: aut secundum comparationem, uel similitudinem, sicut dicit, "Simile est regnum caelorum grano sinapis" et cetera;
[Delta] In how many ways is allegory recognized in the divine law? [Mu] In four: either according to transference, or metaphor, as is, "The Lord was angry" and "He came down," and the like, which, to indicate causes, are transferred from human movements to God; or according to imagination, or hypotyposis, as is in the Gospel, "A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho"; and again, the parable of the vineyard and the husbandmen; for the order of those things which were done by Christ is reported as fulfilled, as it were under the image of another person and matter; or according to comparison, or likeness, as he says, "The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed," and the rest;
〔Δ〕在神聖的律法中,寓意以幾種方式被認出?〔Μ〕以四種方式:或按轉義,即隱喻,如:「耶和華發怒」與「祂降下」等類似的話,這些為要表明緣由,乃是從人的情態轉用到神身上;或按形象描繪,即假設性描寫,如福音書所說:「有一個人從耶路撒冷下耶利哥去」;又如葡萄園與園戶的比喻;因為基督所行之事的次第,乃是彷彿藉著另一人物與另一事件的形象,被記述為已得應驗;或按對比,即相似,如祂說:「諸天的國好像一粒芥菜種」等等;
1:16
for there is no narrative, as is woven together in the previous example, but only the effects of causes are compared; or according to the proverbial mode, as is, "Drink water out of your own vessels and out of your own cistern and out of your own wells," since Scripture wishes to warn that carnal concupiscence is to be restrained within the licence of marriage. 6. On simple teaching. [Delta] What is simple teaching? [Mu] That by which we are simply instructed concerning faith or morals in the present time. 2. [Delta] Why did it receive this name? [Mu] Because all Scripture indeed teaches something, but under the other kinds which we have mentioned above; this kind, however, neither weaves a history nor a prophecy nor speaks proverbially, but only simply teaches.
1:17
I, Petri secunda, Iudae I, Ioannis duae. 4. [Delta] Nulla in his libris alia species inuenitur?
3. [Delta] Which books pertain to simple teaching? [Mu] Seventeen canonical ones, that is: Ecclesiastes, one book; the epistles of the apostle Paul: to the Romans, one; to the Corinthians, two; to the Galatians, one; to the Ephesians, one; to the Philippians, one; to the Colossians, one; to the Thessalonians, two; to Timothy, two; to Titus, one; to Philemon, one; to the Hebrews, one; the first of the blessed Peter to the nations, and the first of the blessed John. [Delta] Do no other books pertain to simple teaching? [Mu] Very many add five others, which are called the canonical epistles of the apostles, that is: James, one; the second of Peter; Jude, one; two of John. 4. [Delta] Is no other kind found in these books? [Mu] The rest occur, but not principally, except for the proof of the teaching.
1:18
7. De auctoritate scripturarum.
For when the apostle says, "And when I had come to Troas for the Gospel of Christ, a door was opened to me," and where he says that he withstood Peter to the face, he seems to weave a history. Again, when he says, "Behold, I tell you a mystery: we shall indeed all rise, but we shall not all be changed," he undertakes the work of a prophet. Likewise when he says, "The Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy bellies," he uses proverbial words: yet all these are inserted, as we have said, for the proof of the teaching. 5. [Delta] What does simple teaching have in common with the other kinds? [Mu] It has in common with history that both seem easy on the surface, though for the most part they are difficult on inspection or in understanding. 7. On the authority of the Scriptures.
1:19
[Delta] Quomodo diuinorum librorum consideratur auctoritas? [Mu] Quia quaedam perfectae auctoritatis sunt, quaedam mediae, quaedam nullius. [Delta] Quae sunt perfectae auctoritatis? [Mu] Quae canonica in singulis speciebus absolute numerauimus. [Delta] Quae mediae? [Mu] Quae adiungi a pluribus diximus. [Delta] Quae nullius auctoritatis sunt? [Mu] Reliqua omnia. 2. [Delta] In omnibus speciebus dictionis hae differentiae inueniuntur? [Mu] In historia et simplici doctrina omnes; nam in prophetia mediae auctoritatis libri praeter apocalypsin non reperiuntur nec in prouerbiali specie omnino cassata. 8. De scriptoribus diuinorum librorum.
[Delta] How is the authority of the divine books considered? [Mu] In that some are of perfect authority, some of middle, some of none. [Delta] Which are of perfect authority? [Mu] Those which we have numbered without qualification as canonical in the several kinds. [Delta] Which are of middle authority? [Mu] Those which we said are added by many. [Delta] Which are of no authority? [Mu] All the rest. 2. [Delta] Are these distinctions found in all the kinds of wording? [Mu] In history and simple teaching, all of them; for in prophecy no books of middle authority are found except the Apocalypse, nor in the proverbial kind, which is wholly without them. 8. On the writers of the divine books.
1:20
[Delta] Scriptores diuinorum librorum qua ratione cognoscimus? [Mu] Tribus modis: aut ex titulis et prooemiis, ut propheticos libros et apostoli epistulas, aut ex titulis tantum, ut euangelistas, aut ex traditione ueterum, ut Moyses traditur scripsisse quinque primos libros historiae, cum non dicat hoc titulus nec ipse referat, "Dixit Dominus ad me," sed quasi de alio, "Dixit Dominus ad Moysen." Similiter et Iesu Naue liber ab eo quo nuncupatur traditur scriptus, et primum regum librum Samuel scripsisse perhibetur. 2. Sciendum praeterea quod quorundam librorum penitus ignorantur auctores, ut Iudicum et Ruth et Regum III ultimi et cetera similia;
[Delta] By what means do we recognize the writers of the divine books? [Mu] In three ways: either from the titles and prefaces, as the prophetic books and the epistles of the apostle; or from the titles only, as the evangelists; or from the tradition of the ancients, as Moses is handed down to have written the first five books of the history, although the title does not say this, nor does he himself report, "The Lord said to me," but as of another, "The Lord said to Moses." Likewise the book of Joshua is handed down to have been written by him by whom it is named, and Samuel is said to have written the first book of Kings. 2. Moreover it must be known that the authors of certain books are altogether unknown, as of Judges and Ruth and the last of the third of Kings and other similar ones;
〔Δ〕我們憑甚麼認出神聖書卷的作者?〔Μ〕憑三種途徑:或從標題與序言,如眾先知書與使徒的書信;或單從標題,如眾福音書作者;或從古人的傳統,如摩西被傳為寫了歷史的頭五卷,雖然標題並未這樣說,他自己也不是說:「耶和華對我說」,而是像論到別人那樣說:「耶和華對摩西說」。照樣,約書亞記被傳為由那以他為名之人所寫,撒母耳被說成寫了列王記第一卷。二、此外當知道,某些書卷的作者全然不為人知,如士師記、路得記、列王記第三卷的末了部分,以及其他類似的書卷;
1:21
10. De ordine scripturarum.
which must therefore be believed to have been divinely arranged, so that the other divine books too might be known to have obtained so great a height of authority not by the merit of their authors, but by the grace of the Holy Spirit alone. 9. On the modes of the Scriptures. [Delta] How many are the modes of divine Scripture? [Mu] Two: for they are written either in Hebrew metres in their own language, or in simple prose. [Delta] Which are written in metres? [Mu] As the Psalms and the history of Job and Ecclesiastes and certain parts among the prophets. [Delta] Which are written in simple prose? [Mu] All the rest. 2. [Delta] Why are they not written among us in the same metres? [Mu] Because no diction preserves metre in another language, unless it change the force and order of the words. 10. On the order of the Scriptures.
1:22
11. [Mu] Tria quaedam:
[Delta] What is the order of the divine volumes? [Mu] In that some are of the Old Testament, some of the New. [Delta] Which pertain to the New Testament? [Mu] The Gospels, as was said above, four; the apostolic epistles; and the Acts. [Delta] Which pertain to the Old Testament? [Mu] All the rest. 2. [Delta] What are the things proper to the Old and the New Testament? [Mu] The intent of the Old is to show forth the New by figures and foretellings; that of the New is to kindle human minds to the glory of eternal blessedness. 11. On the things which Scripture teaches us. [Delta] Since enough has been said about those things which pertained properly to the very surface of Scripture, I now inquire what are the things which Scripture itself teaches us. [Mu] Three things, namely:
for it speaks either of God, or of the present age, or of the age to come. 12. In how many significations does Scripture speak of God? [Delta] In how many significations does Scripture speak of God? [Mu] In four: for it either signifies his essence, which in Latin we also call substance, as is, "I am who I am"; or the Persons, or, according to the Greeks, the subsistences, as is, "Go, teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit"; or his operation, as it is written, "according to the working of the might of his power, which he wrought in Christ, raising him from the dead and making him to sit at his right hand";
因為它或是論到神,或是論到現今的世代,或是論到將來的世代。十二、聖經以幾種意義論到神?〔Δ〕聖經以幾種意義論到神?〔Μ〕以四種:因為它或是指明祂的本質,就是我們在拉丁文中也稱為本體的,如:「我是那我是」;或是指明那些位格,或按希臘人所稱的「位存」,如:「你們要去,使萬民作門徒,奉父子聖靈的名給他們施浸」;或是指明祂的運行,如經上所記:「照祂力量之權能的運行,就是祂在基督身上所運行的,使祂從死人中復活,叫祂坐在自己的右邊」;
1:24
aut collationem eius ad creaturas, ut est, "Regi autem saeculorum incorrupto, inuisibili, soli Deo honor et gloria in saecula saeculorum." 13. De significationibus diuinae essentiae. [Delta] Quot modis diuina significatur essentia? [Mu] Duobus, principaliter et consequenter. 2. [Delta] Principaliter quibus uerbis? [Mu] Octo: dicitur enim aut Deus aut Dominus aut simul Dominus Deus aut Adonai aut Sabaoth aut Eli aut Elohim aut Est. [Delta] Nihil aliud quam Deum haec uerba significant? [Mu] Duo tantum nonnumquam et de aliis abusiue dicuntur, Deus et Dominus, teste Paulo apostolo, "quia dii multi et domini multi";
or his relation to creatures, as is, "Now to the King of the ages, incorruptible, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory unto the ages of ages." 13. On the significations of the divine essence. [Delta] In how many ways is the divine essence signified? [Mu] In two: principally and consequently. 2. [Delta] By what words principally? [Mu] By eight: for it is called either God, or Lord, or at once Lord God, or Adonai, or Sabaoth, or Eli, or Elohim, or He-Who-Is. [Delta] Do these words signify nothing other than God? [Mu] Two only are sometimes said improperly of others as well, namely God and Lord, as Paul the apostle witnesses, "for there are many gods and many lords";
或是指明祂與受造之物的關係,如:「願尊貴榮耀歸與那不能朽壞、不能看見、永世的君王,獨一的神,直到永永遠遠。」十三、論神聖本質的諸般意指。〔Δ〕神聖的本質以幾種方式被指明?〔Μ〕以兩種:主要的與隨從的。二、〔Δ〕主要的是用哪些字眼?〔Μ〕用八個:因為祂或被稱為神,或主,或同時稱為主神,或阿多乃,或撒巴沃,或伊利,或伊羅興,或「那是者」。〔Δ〕這些字眼除神以外,不指明別的嗎?〔Μ〕只有兩個有時也不確切地用於別者,就是「神」與「主」,正如使徒保羅所見證的:「因為有許多的神,許多的主」;
1:25
and "You are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High." But the remaining six are never said except of God. [Delta] What do these words signify concerning God? [Mu] Not what he is, but that he is; for what God is cannot be comprehended. 3. [Delta] In what ways is God signified consequently? [Mu] When it expounds the Persons, or his operation, or his relation to creatures. For even when it names the Father, although the first hearing signifies one who begets, consequently we understand God; likewise also when it names the Son or the Holy Spirit. And when it says "almighty," although the first speech announces his operation, consequently we understand God.
And when it says "invisible," although it principally sounds him who cannot be seen by mortals, and from our relation assigns to him who made us that which we are not, consequently we nevertheless understand God. 14. On the significations of the Trinity. [Delta] In how many ways does Scripture signify the Persons, or subsistences, of the Godhead? [Mu] Likewise in two: principally and consequently: principally, as when we say, "Father, Son, Holy Spirit"; consequently, through those things by which the essence, or the operation, or the relation to creatures is signified.
1:27
Nam et cum dico 'Deus,' quod ad essentiam pertinet, et cum dico 'omnipotens,' quod ad operationem pertinet, et cum dico 'immutabilis,' quod ex collatione ad creaturas dicitur, licet aliud primus auditus sentiat, tamen Patrem et Filium et Spiritum Sanctum uel simul uel singulos, consequenter Deum intellego. 15. Quot modis significatur Pater? [Delta] Quot modis Pater significatur? [Mu] Patris nomine una Persona intellegitur, sed non uno modo: ad Filium enim proprie dicitur, ad creaturam communiter, ibi naturae ueritate, hic gratiae bonitate. 2. [Delta] Hoc uno modo Pater significatur? [Mu] Principaliter hoc;
For both when I say "God," which pertains to the essence, and when I say "almighty," which pertains to the operation, and when I say "immutable," which is said from the relation to creatures, although the first hearing perceives something other, yet I consequently understand Father and Son and Holy Spirit, whether together or singly, to be God. 15. In how many ways is the Father signified? [Delta] In how many ways is the Father signified? [Mu] By the name of Father one Person is understood, but not in one way: for it is said properly with respect to the Son, but commonly with respect to creation; there by the truth of nature, here by the goodness of grace. 2. [Delta] Is the Father signified in this one way? [Mu] Principally in this;
因為當我說「神」——這屬於本質,當我說「全能者」——這屬於運行,當我說「不改變的」——這是從與受造之物的關係而說的,雖然乍聽之下領受的是別的意思,然而隨後我卻領會父、子、聖靈,無論是同時或各別,都是神。十五、父以幾種方式被指明?〔Δ〕父以幾種方式被指明?〔Μ〕藉「父」這名稱領會出一位格,但並非只以一種方式:因為相對於子是確切地說,相對於受造之物則是泛泛地說;前者是按性情的真實,後者是按恩典的良善。二、〔Δ〕父只以這一種方式被指明嗎?〔Μ〕主要是以此方式;
1:28
16. Quot modis significatur Filius?
for consequently, also from those things which in any way signify the essence of the deity, or the operation, or the relation to creatures. Moreover, from the term "Son" the Father is consequently understood; and by the name of the Holy Spirit the Father himself, of course, whose Spirit it is, is understood by implication. 3. [Delta] In the Trinity itself, is the term "Father" ascribed to no other Person? [Mu] It is read as said of the Son, "Father of the age to come," but this is said according to the flesh and figuratively, not properly, so that it might be shown that he himself is the cause and begetter of our blessedness, because through the resurrection of his flesh human nature begins both to hope for and to receive the life to come. 16. In how many ways is the Son signified?
1:29
[Delta] In how many ways does Scripture speak of the Son? [Mu] In five: for sometimes his deity alone is, as it were, signified, and consequently the assumption of flesh is understood, as is, "the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father"; but sometimes only the man assumed by him, and the deity consequently, as is, "in these last days he has spoken to us in the Son"; sometimes both at once, as is, "Have this mind in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant"; sometimes those things which are principally to be referred to the deity seem to be said even with respect to the body, as is, "the Son of Man, who is in heaven";
〔Δ〕聖經以幾種方式論到子?〔Μ〕以五種:因為有時彷彿只指明祂的神性,隨後便領會出取了肉身,如:「那獨生子,就是在父懷裡的」;但有時只指那被祂取來的人,而神性是隨從地領會,如:「就在這末後的日子,藉著祂兒子向我們說話」;有時二者同時並指,如:「你們裡面要思念基督耶穌裡面所思念的,祂本有神的形像,不以自己與神同等為強奪而抓住的,反而倒空自己,取了奴僕的形像」;有時那些主要當歸於神性的,看似也是論到身體而說,如:「那在天上的人子」;
1:30
rursus diuinitati nonnumquam uidentur ascripta quae specialiter referuntur ad carnem, ut est, "si enim cognouissent, numquam Dominum gloriae crucifixissent." 2. [Delta] Quare his quinque modis loquitur scriptura de Filio? [Mu] Distincte quidem ideo secundum naturas loquitur, ut inconfusas earum proprietates ostendat: communiter ideo, ut asserat unitatem; alternat uero humana diuinis et diuina humanis, ut utrumque unius Personae indiuisumque monstretur. 3. [Delta] Quot modis solet Filii significari Persona? [Mu] Duobus; et ipse, principaliter et consequenter: principaliter quidem significatur, cum Christus dicitur absolute;
again, sometimes those things which specially refer to the flesh seem to be ascribed to the divinity, as is, "for had they known, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory." 2. [Delta] Why does Scripture speak of the Son in these five ways? [Mu] It speaks distinctly according to the natures, in order to show their unconfused properties; it speaks in common, in order to assert the unity; and it alternates the human with the divine and the divine with the human, in order that both may be shown to belong to one and undivided Person. 3. [Delta] In how many ways is the Person of the Son wont to be signified? [Mu] In two; and this too, principally and consequently: principally indeed it is signified when Christ is said absolutely;
再者,有時那些特指肉身的,看似歸於神性,如:「他們若曉得,就不把榮耀的主釘十字架了。」二、〔Δ〕聖經為甚麼以這五種方式論到子?〔Μ〕它分別地按二性說話,為要顯明二性互不相混的特性;它通同地說話,為要堅立其合一;它又以人性的事與神性的事交替而言,為要顯明二者同屬於一個不可分割的位格。三、〔Δ〕子的位格慣常以幾種方式被指明?〔Μ〕以兩種;這也是主要的與隨從的:當基督被絕對地稱呼時,主要地被指明;
1:31
for when others are called christs, something is added, as is, "the christ of the Lord" or "my christs"; but he alone who is naturally the Son of God is called Christ absolutely, whence it is declared that this is proper to him alone: consequently, however, the Person of the Son is understood also from those three by which the Father too is understood, and from the very term "Father," and from that of the Holy Spirit, because the Spirit is called the Spirit of both the Father and the Son. 17. In how many ways is the Person of the Holy Spirit signified? [Delta] In how many ways is the Person of the Holy Spirit signified? [Mu] Principally in one, as it is read, "Go, baptize all nations in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," and again, "for you are the temple of the Holy Spirit";
因為當別人被稱為受膏者時,總要加上甚麼,如:「耶和華的受膏者」或「我的眾受膏者」;惟有那本性為神之子的,才被絕對地稱為基督,由此宣告這是惟獨祂所專有的:然而隨從地說,子的位格也是從那使父得以被領會的三樣事物、並從「父」這稱呼本身、以及從「聖靈」這稱呼而被領會的,因為那靈既被稱為父的靈,也被稱為子的靈。十七、聖靈的位格以幾種方式被指明?〔Δ〕聖靈的位格以幾種方式被指明?〔Μ〕主要地以一種,如經上所讀:「你們要去,奉父子聖靈的名給萬民施浸」,又:「因為你們是聖靈的殿」;
1:32
18. Quid habent commune uel proprium Personae Trinitatis? [Delta] Quid habent proprium Personae singulae Trinitatis?
but consequently, also from the grace which he himself bestows, which is likewise itself called the Holy Spirit, as is, "The Holy Spirit shall come upon you" and "Receive the Holy Spirit": likewise also from those things by which the divine essence, or operation, or relation to creatures is signified, as we said of the Son; but the Person of the Father and of the Son also signifies the Holy Spirit consequently, because whatever of these we say, we also understand consequently the Person of the Holy Spirit either as co-operating or as consubstantial. 18. What do the Persons of the Trinity have in common or as proper? [Delta] What do the several Persons of the Trinity have as proper?
2. [Delta] Quae sunt his Personis communia? [Delta] Quid in his Personis significatur? 19.
[Mu] That the Father is never called the Son, nor, in conjoined speech, the Holy Spirit, although separately he can be called both "spirit" and "holy"; nor can the Son properly be called Father, or conjointly the Holy Spirit; nor, again, is the name of Father or of Son ascribed to the Holy Spirit. 2. [Delta] What things are common to these Persons? [Mu] All those which are known to pertain to the signification either of the essence, or of the operation, or of the relation to creatures; whence it is also established that the Trinity is of one substance [under the terms Father and Son and Holy Spirit]. 3. [Delta] What is signified in these Persons? [Mu] Not what they are, but that they are; for what they are, as we said above concerning God, speech cannot explain. 19.
1:34
Per quot modos diuinitatis efficacia significatur? [Delta] Per quot species diuinitatis efficientia, siue operatio, designatur, quam Graeci energian nuncupant? [Mu] Quattuor: aut creatione aut prouidentia circa creaturas aut futurorum circa eas praeparatione aut praeparatorum exitu uel euentu. 2. [Delta] Da ad operationem pertinentia. [Mu] Vt cum dicitur bonus ex eo maxime quod quae non erant esse fecit ac facit, et sapiens eo quod tam mirabiliter ab eo omnia cernimus ordinata, et fortis eo quod potuit quae tam bene et sapienter uoluit adimplere. [Delta] In Deo haec essentia sunt an uoluntate? [Mu] Deus simplex est, nec est in eo essentia aliud quam uoluntas;
In how many ways is the efficacy of the Godhead signified? [Delta] By how many kinds is the efficiency, or operation, of the Godhead designated, which the Greeks call energeia? [Mu] By four: either by creation, or by providence concerning creatures, or by the preparation of future things concerning them, or by the issue or outcome of the things prepared. 2. [Delta] Give the things pertaining to operation. [Mu] As when he is called good, chiefly from this, that he has made and makes to be the things which were not; and wise, in that we discern all things ordered by him so marvellously; and strong, in that he was able to fulfil the things which he so well and wisely willed. [Delta] Are these in God by essence or by will? [Mu] God is simple, nor is there in him essence other than will;
神格的功效以幾種方式被指明?〔Δ〕神格的功能,或運行,希臘人稱為「能力運作」(energeia)的,以幾類被表明?〔Μ〕以四類:或藉創造,或藉對受造之物的眷顧,或藉為它們預備將來之事,或藉所預備之事的成就或結局。二、〔Δ〕請舉出屬於運行的事。〔Μ〕如祂被稱為良善,主要是因祂已造、且正造出本來沒有之物;又稱為智慧,因我們看見萬有被祂如此奇妙地安排有序;又稱為剛強,因祂能成就祂如此美好又智慧地所願的。〔Δ〕這些在神裡面是按本質,還是按意志?〔Μ〕神是單純的,在祂裡面本質與意志並無二致;
1:35
3. [Delta] Da specialiter ad creationem pertinentia.
whence also all the names of his operation, although they differ among themselves in their definitions, yet in him no difference or diversity is found. So then he acts both by essence, or nature, because nothing is accidental to him; and yet also by will, because he effects nothing by necessity or by constraint. For God does not operate as fire burns by the necessity of its nature, or as bees by natural necessity fashion their combs, or spiders their webs; but God is said to make by nature, or essence—lest the will should be shown in him as though something else—and therefore by will, because he is compelled to operate nothing, but essentially wills and by will subsists. 3. [Delta] Give specifically the things pertaining to creation.
[Mu] As when he is called maker, craftsman, creator, and the like, although he is also said to make in the sense of to dispose, as is, "he has wrought salvation in the midst of the earth," but then it is said according to the kind of providence. [Delta] Give the things which pertain specially to providence. [Mu] As when he is called helper, foreknowing, almighty, and the like. [Delta] Give the things pertaining to the preparation of future things. [Mu] As when he is called the way, and hope, and refuge, and the like. [Delta] Give the things pertaining to the issue of the things prepared. [Mu] As when he is called exultation, joy, and the rest of the like. But all the things pertaining to operation are recognized not only in names, but also in similar verbs or revelations. 4.
1:37
[Delta] His tantum modis diuina operatio declaratur?
[Delta] Is the divine operation declared only in these ways? [Mu] There is another, figurative mode, when the divine operation is signified from human things. [Delta] In how many ways does this happen? [Mu] In two: either when the things which pertain to our soul are said figuratively of God, as is fury and anger and soul and repentance; or those things which are handled with respect to the body or through the body, as is feet, hands, fingers. For sometimes even human operations are transferred to God, as when it is said, "Take hold of arms and shield." Yet all these are to be joined to the aforesaid four kinds of operation according to the quality of the sentences. 20. In how many ways is God signified from his relation to creatures? [Delta] In how many ways is God signified from his relation to creatures?
1:38
[Mu] In two: by affirmation and by negation. By affirmation indeed, when those things are said of God which in the same manner befit no creature, as is "simple" and "ancient of days" and "before all things spirit," that is, uncircumscribed, and "first" and "last" and the like. For all these are said of God because, by comparison with him, they befit no creature. But by negation the relation is made when, by a privative prefix, those things are denied in God which are in a creature, as is "unbegotten," "incorporeal," "uncreated," "immortal," "incorruptible," "impassible," and the like. 2. [Delta] What then? Are these words never said of a creature? [Mu] They are indeed said, but not according to the same reasoning.
Liber Secundus. 1. Quid de praesenti saeculo scriptura significat?
For when a man is called simple, it is not because he is not composite (for it belongs to God alone to be of simple essence), but a man is called simple because he does not have the duplicity of guile. So too when something is called invisible, it is not because it cannot, insofar as it exists, be seen by anyone (for this belongs to God alone), but because it lies hidden from some; and likewise the rest. 3. [Delta] What are the relational terms which are said of God in such a way that they cannot be said of a creature? [Mu] Those which are in him supreme and singular, as "unbegotten," "everlasting," "without beginning," and the like. Book Two. 1. What does Scripture signify concerning the present age?
2. Quot modos et differentias in operatione creaturarum scriptura posuerit. [Delta] Quot modis generationem saeculi scriptura significat? [Mu] Tribus:
[Delta] Since enough has been said in how many ways Scripture speaks of God, I now inquire what Scripture, speaking of the present age, signifies. [Mu] Five things, namely: either its generation, that is, its creation; or its governance; or the things accidental to natures; or the things befalling wills; or the things following upon the outcome of the will. 2. How many modes and differences in the operation of creatures Scripture has set forth. [Delta] In how many ways does Scripture signify the generation of the age? [Mu] In three:
2. [Delta] Est in his tribus aliqua differentia?
for either something is written to have been made by the will of God alone, as is, "In the beginning God made heaven and earth"; or by will together with voice, whether preceptive, as is, "Let there be light" and "Let there be a firmament," or deliberative, as is, "Let us make man in our image and likeness"; or by will, voice, and definition, as is, "Increase and multiply and fill the earth," and again, "Let the earth bring forth the green herb bearing seed after its kind, and the fruit-bearing tree making fruit, whose seed is in itself after its likeness upon the earth," and the rest which, after the seventh day even to the end of the age, he works by parts: for from that definition they proceed. 2. [Delta] Is there any difference among these three?
3. [Delta] Da ordinem per sex dies factarum rerum. [Mu] In ipso quidem principio conditionis facta sunt caelum, terra, angeli, aer et aqua. [Delta] Comproba angelos et aquas et aerem factum.
[Mu] There is, because those things which were made by will alone or also by voice were made newly, but those which were made by definition were made similar to those which I said were made newly: and again, those indeed in the first six days, but these as long as the age stands. 3. [Delta] Give the order of the things made through the six days. [Mu] In the very beginning of the founding were made heaven, earth, angels, air, and water. [Delta] Prove that the angels and the waters and the air were made.
[Master] That they were made is shown from other passages of Scripture, as: 'who makes his angels spirits,' and 'Praise him, all his angels,' and 'Let the waters that are above the heavens praise the name of the Lord, for he spoke, and they were made.' And in the Scriptures the air is indicated by the name of 'heaven,' as in 'the birds of heaven,' since it is certain that birds fly in the air; and we have shown that heaven was made. That these things—namely the angels—came before the rest of the creatures, both Scripture demonstrates, since in the praises and blessings they are set before the other creatures, and reason confirms it: for it was fitting that the heavenly creature should precede the earthly. And concerning the waters, Scripture itself says that 'the Spirit of God was borne over the waters.'
1:44
[Delta] Sequere ordinem generationis. [Mu] In principio die prima lux facta est, secunda uero die firmamentum, tertia mare et terrae nascentia, quarta luminaria caeli, quinta natantia et uolatilia, sexta reliqua animalia et homo. 5.
[Disciple] Follow the order of creation. [Master] In the beginning, on the first day light was made; on the second day the firmament; on the third the sea and the things that spring from the earth; on the fourth the lights of heaven; on the fifth the swimming and flying creatures; on the sixth the remaining animals and man. [Disciple] What difference is there in the making of these creatures themselves? [Master] That some were made out of nothing, such as heaven, earth, and the rest that we said were made up to the completion of the first day; but some were made out of things already made on the first day. [Disciple] Give proofs of these. [Master] That whenever Scripture wishes to show that things were made out of something, either it states it openly, as in 'Let the earth bring forth' and 'Let the waters bring forth' and the like;
【徒】請按創造的次序述說。【師】起初,第一日造了光;第二日造了穹蒼;第三日造了海和地上所生長的;第四日造了天上的光體;第五日造了水中游的與空中飛的;第六日造了其餘的走獸和人。【徒】這些受造物在其受造的方式上有何分別?【師】有些是從無而造的,如天、地,以及我們所說在第一日完成之前所造的其餘之物;但有些是從第一日已造之物而造的。【徒】請舉出這些的證據。【師】凡聖經要表明某物是由他物所造時,或是公開明說,如『地要生出』、『水要滋生』之類;
1:45
or else by a subtle indication of the words, as when it says 'Let there be a firmament,' which surely signifies that there had been something fluid and liquid, that is, the waters; and because these were now shown to be made solid, what came into being was called 'firmament.' And again, it called 'lights' by derivation those things which were made on the fourth day, in order to show that they were made from the light wrought on the first day. But among those things which were made on the first day, nothing is declared, either openly or by a subtle word, to have been made from another. [Disciple] Is nothing, then, shown to have been made out of things non-existent after the first day? [Master] Only the soul of man; and in this it must be noted that, whereas other things were made either out of nothing or out of things already made, man alone is composed of both.
1:46
[Delta] Quas alias differentias creaturis ascribimus?
[Disciple] What other distinctions do we ascribe to the creatures? [Master] That those things which were made in the first six days did not come about naturally nor by way of likeness; but the rest, which come about naturally, are born by divine ordinance—excepting, of course, miracles. [Disciple] Give the third distinction. [Master] That some of the creatures, namely the rational ones, were made for their own sake, such as angels and men; but the rest are known to have been made not for their own sake, but for the sake of the aforesaid angels or men. Man, indeed, is to be understood as made principally for his own sake with respect to his soul; for with respect to his body, consequently so. [Disciple] But what then? Did not other creatures, besides men and angels, have need of one another?
1:47
[Mu] Egebant quidem non ad utilitatem, sed ad ornatum: utiles enim non sibi sed angelis uel hominibus sunt, pro quibus etiam factae noscuntur. (7b) Ornatum uero etiam inuicem praestant: quippe et caelum inornatum sine caelestibus luminaribus fuit, et luminaria ipsa, ne superflua facta essent, uidentium oculis indigebant: et mare inornatum, donec aut locum suum reciperet aut animalibus impleretur: et terra incomposita praeter habitantium uel nascentium usum, et irrationabilia animalia sine hominis regimine inepta, et herbae absente animalium usu superfluae. Ita omnia eguerunt inuicem uel his quae per sex dies facta sunt uel his quae cotidie fiunt;
[Master] They did indeed need one another—not for utility, but for adornment; for they are useful not to themselves but to the angels or to men, for whose sake they are also known to have been made. But they do furnish adornment to one another in turn: for the heaven was unadorned without the heavenly luminaries; and the luminaries themselves, lest they should be made in vain, needed the eyes of those who behold them; and the sea was unadorned until it either took its place or was filled with living creatures; and the earth was unformed apart from the use of those who dwell or are born upon it; and the irrational animals were unfit without the rule of man; and the herbs were superfluous in the absence of the use of animals. Thus all things needed one another, whether those which were made during the six days or those which come into being daily;
【師】牠們確實彼此需要——不是為了功用,而是為了裝飾;因為牠們對自己無用,乃是對天使或人有用,且已知是為這些而造的。然而牠們確實彼此互相提供裝飾:因為天若無屬天的光體便是未經裝飾的;而光體自身,恐其被造成徒然,便需要觀看者的眼目;海在尚未各歸其位、或尚未充滿活物之前,是未經裝飾的;地若不為居住者或所生之物所用,便是未成形的;無理性的走獸若無人的治理便不合宜;草木若無動物的使用便是多餘的。如此,萬物都彼此需要,無論是在六日內所造的,還是每日所生的;
1:48
but, as we have already said, it is one thing to be unformed, another to be useful: for something unformed is declared in itself to be useful to another. [Disciple] In the adornment itself is there any distinction? [Master] There is; for some things were adorned during the six days, as heaven with luminaries, earth with herbs, and the sea with fishes; certain things are adorned as long as the world lives, as the sea with ships, the earth with buildings and the rest of the things constructed by human skill, and man himself with knowledge; but certain things will receive their beauty in the time to come, as the body incorruption, mortal things immortality, and the heavenly kingdom the habitation of the saints. It must be noted, moreover, in adornments, that of those which come about by skill or by the arts the cause is in men, but of the rest the cause is in God.
1:49
[Delta] Da quartam differentiam. 10. [Delta] Da sextam differentiam.
[Disciple] Give the fourth distinction. [Master] That some things emerged at once and as if suddenly created, as those which we said were made in the first days—that is, the herbs, the luminaries, the swimming and flying creatures, and likewise the land animals and quadrupeds; but some came to be not all at once, but as if with a certain delay, as the sea, the earth, and man: for man too is written to have been made gradually, just as the rest. [Disciple] Give the fifth distinction of the creatures. [Master] That some of them by reason preside over the rest, as the rational; some are held for use, as the heavenly luminaries; some serve by necessity of nature, as the birds and quadrupeds and the like. [Disciple] Give the sixth distinction.
[Mu] Sex: terram, aquas, aerem, ignem, lumen, costam. [Delta] Da in singulis origines suas.
[Master] That those which preside over the rest, namely the rational, are moved by will and reason; but those which serve by use or by necessity are moved by nature. [Disciple] The things that were made out of something—how many materials did they have? [Master] Six: earth, waters, air, fire, light, and the rib. [Disciple] Give in each case their origins. [Master] From the earth, the green things, the plants, and the animals; from the waters, the firmament, the sea, the swimming and flying creatures; and at the same time, from earth, water, fire, and air, all the things that are renewed through successions; from light, the luminaries; from the rib, Eve. [Disciple] How is it proved that fire was made, or from what, or when?
[Master] That it was made we can prove even from the general statement of Scripture, when it is said of God, 'who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all things that are in them,' since fire too is certainly among them; and from a special declaration, 'Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea-monsters and all deeps, fire, hail, snow, ice, stormy winds,' concerning which it had said before, 'for he spoke, and they were made'; and again, 'Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord,' and it added, 'Bless the Lord, fire and heat.' But whether fire was made out of nothing, like the rest, or out of something, is doubted. For many wish it to be a particle of the heavenly luminaries;
【師】牠是被造的,我們甚至能從聖經的概括陳述加以證明,因論到神說:『祂造了天、地、海和其中的萬物』,火自然也在其中;又從一段特別的宣告:『地上的,你們要讚美耶和華;你們海中的大魚和一切深洋、火與冰雹、雪和霧氣、成就祂命的狂風』,論到這些,先前已說:『因為祂一發命,這些就都造成』;又:『耶和華的一切工作啊,你們都要稱頌耶和華』,並補充說:『火與熱啊,你們要稱頌耶和華。』然而火是像其餘之物一樣從無而造,還是從某物而造,這仍存疑。因為許多人主張牠是屬天光體的一部分;
1:52
for even now we have often seen men in a certain way borrow fire from the rays of the sun; and if this is so, it was made on the first day; but Scripture more wisely called this 'light' rather than 'fire,' so that it might take its name from the better use. [Disciple] Give the seventh distinction of the creatures. [Master] That all things which were made out of something, or out of which some things were made, are corporeal; but incorporeal things were themselves neither made out of anything, nor were any things made out of them. These things, however, are to be taken as incorporeal not in the sense in which God is called incorporeal; for in comparison with him nothing is incorporeal, just as nothing is immortal or invisible.
For there is one way in which these words befit the divinity alone, and another in which it speaks of the creatures, such as souls or angels. [Disciple] How is God said to have worked for six days and to have rested on the seventh day, if neither does he labor in making anything—so that rest should be believed necessary for him—nor does he ever cease, since the Lord says in the Gospel, 'My Father works until now, and I work'? [Master] God is said to have rested on the seventh day not from creating, since indeed by his dispensation and providence every creature is daily renewed or sustained; but this was signified: that after those six days he created no substantial form unknown to the world, nor any new nature untried before.
1:54
[Delta] Quomodo Deus mundum fecerit possumus quaerere? [Mu] Hoc temerarie magis quam caute requiritur. Nullius enim diuinae creaturae modum homini licet agnoscere; nam si sciret quis quomodo ex nihilo aliqua facta sunt, Creatori utique scientia ac potentia par fuisset. 3. De his quae ad gubernationem mundi pertinent. [Delta] Quoniam de creatione mundi tractatum est competenter, restat ut quaeramus: gubernatio eius quot modis significatur? [Mu] Duobus: aut enim generalis est aut specialis. 2. [Delta] Quae est generalis? [Mu] Per quam ea quae facta sunt secundum modum quo facta sunt permanent; quod significatur cum dictum est, "Vidit Deus quia bonum" et quia "bona ualde" et "benedixit ea";
[Disciple] Can we inquire how God made the world? [Master] This is asked rashly rather than cautiously. For it is not permitted to man to understand the manner of any divine creation; for if anyone should know how some things were made out of nothing, he would surely be equal to the Creator in knowledge and power. On the things that pertain to the governance of the world. [Disciple] Since the creation of the world has been suitably treated, it remains for us to inquire: in how many ways is its governance signified? [Master] In two: for it is either general or special. [Disciple] What is the general? [Master] That by which the things that were made remain according to the manner in which they were made; which is signified when it is said, 'God saw that it was good,' and that they were 'very good,' and 'he blessed them';
【徒】我們能否查究神是如何造世界的?【師】這樣查問乃是冒失,而非謹慎。因為人不得明白任何神聖創造的方式;因為若有人能知曉某些之物是如何從無而造的,他在知識與能力上必然與創造者相等了。論到那些關乎世界治理之事。【徒】既然世界的創造已得適當的論述,接下來該查問的是:祂的治理藉幾種方式表明?【師】兩種:因為治理或是普遍的,或是特殊的。【徒】何為普遍的治理?【師】就是藉以使所造之物按其受造的方式而存留的治理;這就表明在所說的話中:『神看著是好的』,以及『甚好』,又『神賜福給牠們』;
1:55
4. Quot modis fit generalis gubernatio? [Delta] Generalis gubernatio in quot species diuiditur?
which blessed David also shows, saying, 'he spoke, and they were made; he commanded, and they were created. He established them for ever and unto the age of ages; he set a decree, and it shall not pass away.' [Disciple] What is the special governance? [Master] That by which individual things, and especially the rational, are governed by God, as the command in Paradise concerning the tree. For just as the divine power contains all creatures, that they may remain, so also it instructs the rational by various occasions, that they may make progress. In how many ways does general governance come about? [Disciple] Into how many kinds is general governance divided? [Master] Into two: for it consists either in succession or in continuance.
2. 5. Quot modis fiat gubernatio specialis.
By succession, as men or beasts of burden and the rest, which, perishing by death or corruption, are renewed by the likeness of those being reborn; but by continuance, as those things which, not subject to these passions, obey the motions of the world, such as heaven, the sun, the stars, and the rest. [Disciple] What other distinction is there among these? [Master] That those things which are preserved by renewal need also certain remedies—foods and rains, and sometimes the ministries of angels and other like things. But those things which do not subsist through succession are governed by God without any such mediation. But whether even in these something is done through the ministry of angels is a hidden and difficult question. In how many ways does special governance come about.
1:57
[Delta] Specialis gubernatio quot modis fit? [Mu] Per legis lationem. 6. De legis latione et differentiis eius. [Delta] Legis latio in quot partes diuiditur? [Mu] In duas: in naturalem discretionem et in legem extrinsecus positam. [Delta] Proba naturalem discretionem legem dici.
[Disciple] In how many ways does special governance come about? [Master] In three: for it comes either from God on behalf of angels and men, or from angels for the sake of themselves and men, or from men for their own sake. [Disciple] How does it come about from God on behalf of angels and men? [Master] Through the giving of the law. On the giving of the law and its distinctions. [Disciple] Into how many parts is the giving of the law divided? [Master] Into two: into natural discernment and into a law set externally. [Disciple] Prove that natural discernment is called a law. [Master] The Apostle says that 'the Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature the things of the law; these, not having the law, are a law unto themselves.' According to this, Cain too was guilty of his brother's murder.
1:58
[Delta] Extrinsecus constituta lex in quot partes diuiditur? [Mu] In duas: in opera, id est actuum retributionem, et uerba. 7.
[Disciple] Into how many parts is the externally established law divided? [Master] Into two: into works—that is, the recompense of acts—and into words. On the law through works. [Disciple] In the case of works, through how many ways? [Master] Through four: either through a general present recompense, as is the yield of crops and of the seasons; or through a special present recompense, as Abraham enriched among strangers, or Noah saved in the flood; or through a general visible punishment, as a general famine or drought; or through a special one, as the punishment of Cain or Saul. For all these things instruct angels and men after the manner of a law; for indeed the fall of the devil both terrified and confirmed the angels—though it must be believed that angels are instructed in one way, men in another.
1:59
[Disciple] What is the purpose of the whole giving of the law? [Master] It lies in the discernment of good and evil, which are recognized either in doctrine—that is, in faith—or in deeds. [Disciple] Why did we say that present punishments and rewards are a law? [Master] Because they are the very things that instruct in place of a law; for things future and eternal will profit neither those who suffer nor those who see them, where there will no longer be a time for repentance. [Disciple] By what ministers is this governance read in the Scriptures to have been carried out? [Master] Sometimes God by himself, as he commanded Adam not to touch the tree; sometimes through angels, as the Apostle testifies that 'if the word spoken through angels was made firm'; and again, the firstborn of Egypt are said to have been destroyed by the hand of an angel;
【徒】整個律法頒賜的目的是甚麼?【師】在於辨別善惡,這善惡或在教義中——即在信德中——或在行為中得以認出。【徒】我們為何說當下的刑罰與賞賜是律法?【師】因為牠們正是代替律法而施教之物;因為將來且永遠之事,對受苦者或觀看者都無益處,在那裡將不再有悔改的時機。【徒】聖經中記載這治理是藉哪些執事而成的?【師】有時是神親自施行,如祂吩咐亞當不可摸那樹;有時是藉天使,如使徒所見證的:『那藉天使所傳的話既是堅定的』;又如,埃及一切頭生的據說是被天使的手所滅的;
1:60
8. De lege per uerba. [Delta] Lex in uerbis constituta in quot partes diuiditur? [Delta] Temporalia praecepta in quot partes diuiduntur? 2. [Delta] Quae alia est legum differentia?
or through men, as through the prophets; or through beasts, as through the serpents in the wilderness and the like: for through these things too, as through a kind of substantial and material law, he forbids from evils on account of which they are inflicted, and impels and urges toward the goods whose reward he holds out. On the law through words. [Disciple] Into how many parts is the law established in words divided? [Master] Into two: for it commands either something unchangeable or something temporal. [Disciple] How many are the kinds of unchangeable things? [Master] Two: the love of God and the love of neighbor. [Disciple] Into how many parts are temporal precepts divided? [Master] Into two: for they were observed either for a long time, as circumcision, or for a short time, as the receiving of the manna. [Disciple] What other distinction of laws is there?
4. [Delta] Da quartam differentiam.
[Master] That they either command something, as 'Honor your father,' or forbid something, as 'You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery.' [Disciple] Give the third distinction. [Master] That some are useful in themselves, others necessary on account of those. [Disciple] Which are useful in themselves? [Master] The love of God and of neighbor. [Disciple] Which are necessary on account of others? [Master] As, 'You shall not kill'; for by murder the love of a brother is driven out; and the observance of the Sabbath: for in its observance there is a commemoration of God's rest from the working of creatures, in which celebration the love of God as Creator was signified. [Disciple] Give the fourth distinction.
[Delta] Da septimam differentiam.
[Master] That certain precepts were as it were bodily, as those concerning clean and unclean animals and leprosy and the like; certain were spiritual, as 'You shall not hate your brother in your heart.' [Disciple] Give the fifth distinction. [Master] That certain are precepts specially of the Old Testament, as concerning the jubilee; certain specially of the New, as 'Thus shall you pray: Our Father, who art in heaven'; certain common to both, as 'You shall love the Lord your God.' [Disciple] Give the sixth distinction. [Master] That some precepts are understood as they sound, as 'You shall not commit adultery'; but some not as they sound, as 'When you do alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing.' [Disciple] Give the seventh distinction.
1:63
[Mu] Quod aliquorum transgressio praeceptorum poena punitur, ut est, "oculum pro oculo, dentem pro dente": aliquorum poenam non habet, ut, panem sacerdotalem comedere ab eo qui sacerdos non erat: aliorum uero etiam laudabilis transgressio est, ut est, "si reddidi retribuentibus mihi mala": lex enim tunc iubebat malis mala restitui; inuenitur ergo contemptus legis esse laudabilis. 8. [Delta] Da octauam differentiam. [Mu] Quod aliqua praecepta ad fidem pertinent, aliqua ad mores, quorum subdiuisio admodum prolixa cognoscitur. 9. De angelica gubernatione. [Delta] Angelorum propter se ipsos et homines gubernatio quomodo fit? [Mu] Palam quidem in scriptura non legitur;
[Master] That the transgression of some precepts is punished with a penalty, as 'an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth'; the transgression of some has no penalty, as for one who was not a priest to eat the priestly bread; but of others the transgression is even praiseworthy, as 'if I have repaid those who rendered me evil.' For the law then commanded that evils be repaid to the evil; therefore the contempt of the law is found to be praiseworthy. [Disciple] Give the eighth distinction. [Master] That some precepts pertain to faith, some to morals, the subdivision of which is recognized to be exceedingly extensive. On angelic governance. [Disciple] How does the governance of angels for their own sake and for men come about? [Master] It is not, indeed, read openly in Scripture;
【師】有些誡命的違犯要受刑罰處置,如『以眼還眼,以牙還牙』;有些的違犯無刑罰,如非祭司的人喫祭司的餅;但有些的違犯甚至是值得稱讚的,如『我若以惡報那以惡待我的』。因為律法當時吩咐要以惡報惡;故此,藐視律法竟成了值得稱讚的。【徒】請說第八項分別。【師】有些誡命關乎信德,有些關乎品行,其細分已知是極其繁多的。論到天使的治理。【徒】天使為其自身並為人所行的治理是怎樣進行的?【師】這在聖經中確實未曾公開記載;
1:64
tamen cum in ea dicantur esse angelorum gradus et ordines, atque discursus propter humanam uitam, ut pro Tobia et Daniele et aliis, sine dubio significatur quod iniuncta sibi in mundo negotia gubernent, quibus et sibi consulunt, dum oboediunt Creatori, et hominibus, dum eorum dispensationi prospiciunt. 10. De humana gubernatione per homines. [Delta] Hominum propter se ipsos gubernatio quot modis fit? [Mu] Tribus: aut enim pro republica quis hominum satagit, ut rex, aut pro domo, ut paterfamilias, aut pro se ipso, ut quilibet monachus uel egenus. 2. [Delta] Nullis aliis creaturis conuenit gubernatio? [Mu] Omnibus quidem conuenit;
yet since therein angels are said to have ranks and orders, and goings-to-and-fro on account of human life, as for Tobias and Daniel and others, it is without doubt signified that they govern the tasks enjoined upon them in the world, by which they both look after themselves, while they obey the Creator, and after men, while they make provision for their dispensation. On human governance through men. [Disciple] In how many ways does the governance of men for their own sake come about? [Master] In three: for either a man is busied on behalf of the commonwealth, as a king; or on behalf of a household, as the head of a family; or for his own sake, as any monk or needy person. [Disciple] Does governance belong to no other creatures? [Master] It belongs indeed to all;
然而既然其中說到天使有等次與班次,並為人的生命之故有奔走往來,如為多比雅、但以理及其他人所行的,這無疑表明牠們治理那在世界中所交付牠們的事務,藉此牠們既照顧自己——當牠們順從創造者時,又照顧人——當牠們眷顧人的安排時。論到藉人而有的人的治理。【徒】人為其自身所行的治理藉幾種方式進行?【師】三種:因為人或是為國家而操勞,如君王;或是為家庭,如一家之主;或是為自己,如任何修士或窮乏之人。【徒】治理豈不屬於別的受造之物嗎?【師】牠確實屬於一切受造之物;
1:65
[Delta] Quae certe accidunt creaturis?
for the Creator has bestowed upon all, according to their nature, a kind of prudence as it were, as it is read, 'I wished to gather your children, as a hen her chicks,' and the like. But neither is it the intention of Scripture to teach subtly about irrational things, nor does it belong to the desire of those making progress to wear away time in inquiring into these. On the accidents of nature. [Disciple] Since enough has been said about the governance of the world, what are the accidents of natures? [Master] To the divine nature, indeed, nothing accidental happens: for since it is incomprehensible and ever holding itself in the same manner, it does not admit the diversity of accidents. [Disciple] What, then, accidentally happens to creatures?
[Master] To stand still, as the earth; and according to Scripture, to be moved in heaven, as fire and waters and the rest of growing things; then time, place, number—for all things both began at some time and are somewhere and are one or many. Likewise there accidentally happen: to be generated, to be corrupted, health, sickness, shape, position, the capacity for arts and disciplines; likewise to grow, to be nourished, to perceive, to live, to die, to differ among themselves and to be contraries; furthermore order, sequence, coherence, and things like these and contrary to them; yet not all of them to each thing. On the accidents of the will. [Disciple] Since enough has been said about the accidents of natures, we must now speak of the accidents of the will. What is the will?
1:67
[Mu] Vis animi inuiolata siue spontanea, secundum quam diuersae atque contrariae cogitationes efficiuntur et opera. [Delta] Naturalis est in nobis ista uirtus an spontanea? [Mu] Naturalis est in nobis quaedam boni malique discretio; spontaneus autem motus in his quae iam discreta exsequenda sunt. Ipsum lex quidem erudit; gratia autem praeparat, adiuuat, corroborat et coronat. 13. De consequentibus euentu uoluntatis. [Delta] Quae sunt consequentia uoluntatis? [Mu] Quattuor quaedam: in hac enim uita aut bona bonis et mala malis eueniunt, ut Abrahae prosperitas et Cain poena: aut e contra bona malis et mala bonis, ut diues in euangelio usque ad mortem felix describitur;
[Master] A power of the mind, inviolate or spontaneous, according to which diverse and contrary thoughts and works are produced. [Disciple] Is this faculty natural in us, or spontaneous? [Master] There is in us a certain natural discernment of good and evil; but the motion is spontaneous in those things which, once discerned, are to be carried out. The law indeed instructs the will itself; but grace prepares, helps, strengthens, and crowns it. On the consequences attending the outcome of the will. [Disciple] What are the consequences of the will? [Master] A certain four: for in this life either good things befall the good and evil things the evil, as the prosperity of Abraham and the punishment of Cain; or, on the contrary, good things the evil and evil things the good, as the rich man in the Gospel is described as fortunate even unto death;
【師】乃是心思的一種能力,是未受侵害的或自發的,藉著牠便產生各樣相異而相反的思念與行為。【徒】這能力在我們裡面是本性的,還是自發的?【師】我們裡面有某種對善惡的本性辨別;但那運動,在那些一經辨別就當付諸實行之事上,乃是自發的。律法確實教導意志自身;但恩典卻豫備牠、幫助牠、堅固牠、並為牠加冠。論到意志結局所附帶的後果。【徒】意志的後果是甚麼?【師】有某四種:因為在今生,或是善事臨到善人、惡事臨到惡人,如亞伯拉罕的興盛與該隱的刑罰;或是相反,善事臨到惡人、惡事臨到善人,如福音書中那財主被描述為直到死都享福;
1:68
e contra Lazarus ulceribus atque egestate torquetur: aut certe neque his neque illis utralibet retributio; ut pro Ioseph uendito nulla ultio fratribus irrogatur, nec socer Moysi pro regendo populo consilium dans, licet laudetur a Deo, aliqua mercede fungitur. 2. [Delta] Quas huius diuersitatis dicimus causas?
on the contrary, Lazarus is tormented with sores and want; or else neither to these nor to those is any recompense rendered—as for Joseph, who was sold, no vengeance is exacted upon his brothers, nor does the father-in-law of Moses, who gave counsel for ruling the people, though praised by God, receive any reward. [Disciple] What causes do we assign for this diversity? [Master] To some, fitting things are repaid here, lest the world be thought to be ruled not by divine providence but by chance; and at the same time, that both the abundance of good things may console the good, and the punishment of like things may deter the evil; or else prosperity is permitted to the evil, that the good may be tested and may learn to despise those things which they see to be shared in common with the unworthy; but evils befall the good equally:
14. 15. De acceptionibus.
or to neither kind is any image of recompense granted here, that we may be able to recognize that judgment and full retribution for deeds is elsewhere. [Disciple] Give the fourth mode. [Master] When those who have done neither anything evil nor anything good of themselves partake of good things or evil—as infants—or perhaps neither, as are the stillborn, concerning whose state and merit and cause there is a subtle and doubtful discussion. On the things that pertain to the age to come. [Disciple] Since we have completed all the parts of the rules concerning the present age, what things do we believe pertain to the age to come? [Master] A certain four: for there is either an acceptance, or calling, or a figure, or a prediction, or the effect, or outcome, of the things foretold. On acceptances.
1:70
[Delta] Quam uocamus acceptionem, siue uocationem? [Mu] Eam scilicet qua Deus quosdam homines uel populos specialis gratiae beneficio sibi conciliare dignatur, plusque circa eos quam circa ceteros homines diuinae indulgentiae et quasi familiares fauores ostendit. 2. [Delta] Quot sunt acceptiones? [Mu] Decem. [Delta] Da ordinem acceptionum.
[Disciple] What do we call acceptance, or calling? [Master] That, namely, by which God deigns to reconcile to himself certain men or peoples by the benefit of special grace, and shows toward them more than toward other men, as it were, the familiar favors of divine indulgence. [Disciple] How many are the acceptances? [Master] Ten. [Disciple] Give the order of the acceptances.
[Master] The first is that of blessed Abraham; the second of Isaac; the third of Jacob and of the twelve patriarchs born from him; the fourth of the tribe of Judah; the fifth of the whole people in Egypt; the sixth of holy David; the seventh of the house of David himself, and through it of the whole tribe of Judah; the eighth the return of the people from captivity; the ninth of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh, which the Son of God, coming, took to himself from the lineage of David, and through it provided for the salvation and remission of us all from Abraham and from Adam; the tenth of all the nations through the dispensation of the incarnation of our God and Savior himself. [Disciple] What then? Were there not righteous men, pleasing to God, before Abraham?
[Master] There were indeed, since those who had been begotten from Seth were called 'sons of God,' and Enoch was translated, and Noah was made the renewer of a perishing world, and Melchizedek a type of the high priest. But in these the divine acceptance—that is, that special familiarity and favor—is not shown, but their righteousness is declared; whereas toward Abraham God's frequent address and, as it were, fellowship, and his dispensation in each particular, the rewards promised as proof, and the remembrance unto his posterity, show the wondrous power of divine acceptance. Similarly also, concerning the rest aforementioned, a certain peculiar favor of the divinity and, as it were, a governance openly dispensed through the individual acts of life, declares the special aid of grace.
1:73
[Delta] Quare haec ad futurum saeculum dicimus pertinere, cum in praesenti gesta sint? [Mu] Quia unaquaeque res ex effectu perspicitur, et ea est facti causa quae facientis intentio. [Delta] Proba harum acceptionum causas ad futura respicere. [Mu] Gentium fides pro spe uitae aeternae religionem sequitur Christianam. Nam Christus ipse Dominus toto doctrinae suae remedio actuumque miraculis necnon resurrectione atque ascensione futuram uitam docuit, promisit, approbauit, indulsit. Iam ceteras acceptiones quis pro Domino sacramentisque eius ignorat effectas, si ipse Abrahae, Isaac et Iacob promittitur salutem gentibus collaturus? (4b) Propter eum Abrahae semen a ceteris gentibus segregatur;
[Disciple] Why do we say these things pertain to the age to come, since they were done in the present? [Master] Because every thing is perceived from its effect, and the cause of a deed is the intention of the doer. [Disciple] Prove that the causes of these acceptances look toward things to come. [Master] The faith of the nations, for the hope of eternal life, follows the Christian religion. For Christ himself, the Lord, by the whole remedy of his teaching and the miracles of his acts, and by his resurrection and ascension, taught, promised, proved, and granted the life to come. And who is ignorant that the other acceptances were brought about for the Lord and his sacraments, if he himself is promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as the one who would confer salvation upon the nations? On his account the seed of Abraham is set apart from the other nations;
【徒】我們為何說這些事是關乎來世的,既然牠們是在今世所成的?【師】因為每一件事都從其果效得以看出,而一件事的原因,乃是行事者的本意。【徒】請證明這些蒙接納的緣由是指望將來之事。【師】萬民的信德,為著永遠生命的盼望,便跟從基督教。因為基督自己——就是主,藉著祂教訓全備的醫治、祂作為的神蹟、並祂的復活與升天,教導、應許、證實並賜下了來世的生命。誰會不知道其餘的蒙接納都是為著主並祂的奧祕而成的呢?若祂自己向亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各被應許為那要把救恩賜給萬民的一位?為祂的緣故,亞伯拉罕的後裔便從其餘的民族中分別出來;
1:74
16. De typis. [Delta] Quid est typus?
on his account the tribe of Judah both excels in blessing, and is led last into captivity and saved first, because from it the Lord deigned to take flesh—so much so that from it all were called Jews; he himself is promised to David and to his house and tribe as the one who would reign for ever from his seed. Therefore, if the faith of the nations was wrought for the life to come, the incarnation of Christ for the faith of the nations, and the rest for the incarnation of Christ, then the whole series of acceptances is gathered, from its very intention, to pertain to the age to come. And all these things are also easily confirmed by the testimonies of the New and the Old Testament, since they are everywhere scattered. On types. [Disciple] What is a type?
3. [Delta] Da in praesentibus.
[Master] What we call a figure, or form, as the Apostle says, 'For all these things happened to them in figure,' and again, 'Adam, who is the form of the one to come'; for it is not out of place that one same thing be signified by many words. [Disciple] What then is a type, or figure? [Master] The manifestation, through deeds, of present or past or future unknown things—according to that which the deeds are. [Disciple] Give types of past things. [Master] As is the humility of the catechumens: for they bear the type of Adam, expelled from Paradise and, out of the consciousness of his sins, fearing the divine countenance; on which account they too go about in public with their heads covered. [Disciple] Give one among present things.
1:76
[Mu] Vt Aaron uestis, quae duodecim tribuum nomina lapidibus insignata gestabat, ostendens se quodammodo pro omni populo supplicare. 4. 17.
[Master] As the garment of Aaron, which bore the names of the twelve tribes engraved upon stones, showing that he in a certain way made supplication on behalf of the whole people. [Disciple] Give one concerning future things. [Master] In these there is no difficulty; yet, by way of surplus, as in the two sons of Abraham the two testaments were shown. [Disciple] Since we gave an almost similar definition concerning prophecy as well, what is the difference? [Master] That in prophecy, by words, according to that which words are, future things are signified; but in types, things are declared from things. Yet these two can be so mingled in definition that we may say that prophecy is a type in words, according to that which they are words; and conversely, a type is a prophecy in things, insofar as they are known to be things.
1:77
On the distinctions of types. [Disciple] How many are the modes of types, or figures? [Master] Principally four: for either glad things are signified by glad, or sad by sad, or glad by sad, or sad by glad. [Disciple] Give examples through the individual modes. [Master] Glad things are indeed signified by glad, as the resurrection of our Lord according to the flesh and his dwelling in heaven is a form of our resurrection and a sign of the future dwelling of the righteous in heaven, as the Apostle says, 'For you are dead, and our life is hidden with Christ in God.'
But sad things are prefigured by sad, as the casting down of the devil and his angels and the promise of future punishment is a figure of those who, for the likeness of their works, will be thrust down to like punishments, just as blessed Peter too uses the same form to deter sinners, saying of God that 'he did not spare the angels that sinned, but delivered them to the prisons of darkness.' The third mode is when glad things are signified by sad, as the transgression of Adam was a type of the righteousness of our Savior, as the blessed Apostle teaches that 'as by the disobedience of one man many were made sinners, so also by the obedience of one man many shall be made righteous.'
'For death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned after the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is the form of the one to come'—that is, the type; for in the Greek the word 'typus' is specially read. Therefore the grace of the second Adam, that is, of Christ, was the form, or type, of the transgression of Adam—prefigured, namely, by way of contrast. The fourth mode is when sad things are figured by glad, as baptism is a figure of the death of our Lord, as the Apostle says, 'For as many of you as were baptized in the death of Jesus were baptized.' For what is gladder than baptism, where we are cleansed from sin and by which we are made sons of God; or sadder than death, to which even he himself, who was about to take it up willingly, nevertheless came in sorrow?
1:80
[Mu] Quae alia typis accidunt? [Mu] Temporum differentia: nam quaedam ante Legem sunt, ut Abel a fratre occisus Christi passionem praefigurabat, et arca Noe ecclesiam et cetera similia: quaedam uero sub Lege, ut ipsius Moysis mors et Iesu gloria: quaedam sub Gratia, ut baptizatorum indumenta et sacerdotum uestes et dominici corporis participatio et singula alia; quae omnia typis monstrare non ad regularum doctrinam sed ad expositionem textus pertinet. 7. [Mu] Qua ratione figuras, siue typos, ad futurum saeculum dicimus pertinere? [Mu] Quia ueteris quidem testamenti figurae ad nouum intentione respiciunt;
[Disciple] What other things accidentally befall types? [Master] Difference of times: for some are before the Law, as Abel, slain by his brother, prefigured the passion of Christ, and Noah's ark the Church, and the like; but some are under the Law, as the death of Moses himself and the glory of Joshua; some under Grace, as the garments of the baptized and the vestments of the priests and the partaking of the Lord's body and various other things—all of which to show by types pertains not to the teaching of the rules but to the exposition of the text. [Disciple] By what reasoning do we say that figures, or types, pertain to the age to come? [Master] Because the figures of the Old Testament look in intention toward the New;
【徒】還有哪些事偶然臨到豫表?【師】時間的不同:因為有些是在律法以前的,如亞伯被弟兄所殺,豫表了基督的受難,挪亞的方舟豫表了教會之類;但有些是在律法之下的,如摩西自己的死與約書亞的榮耀;有些是在恩典之下的,如受浸者的衣裳、祭司的衣服、有分於主的身體,以及別的各樣之事——這一切藉豫表來表明,並不屬乎規則的教導,乃屬乎經文的解釋。【徒】我們憑甚麼理由說表記或豫表是關乎來世的?【師】因為舊約的表記,在本意上是指望新約的;
1:81
18. De praedictionibus. [Mu] Quoniam typorum regulam diximus, de praedictionibus uideamus. Quid est praedictio? [Mu] Futurarum incertarum rerum uerbis, in quantum uerba sunt, manifestatio. 2. [Mu] Quae accidunt praedictionibus? [Mu] Principaliter tria, quod quaedam ante Legem fuerunt, quaedam sub Lege, quaedam sub Gratia. 19. Praedictiones ante Legem quot modis factae sunt? [Mu] Ante Legem praedictiones quot modis factae sunt? [Mu] Quinque:
but the New promises the blessedness of the life to come, and thus all things, from their very intention, run together toward the hope of the age to come. On predictions. [Master] Since we have spoken of the rule of types, let us look at predictions. What is a prediction? [Master] The manifestation of future uncertain things by words, insofar as they are words. [Disciple] What accidentally befalls predictions? [Master] Principally three things: that some were before the Law, some under the Law, some under Grace. In how many ways were predictions made before the Law? [Disciple] In how many ways were predictions made before the Law? [Master] In five:
either concerning generality in common, as 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and shall cleave to his wife, and they shall be two in one flesh'; and again, 'Cursed is the earth in your works'; for this is known to have been foretold to the whole human race through one man: or in part, or half, as 'I will multiply your sorrows, and in sorrow you shall bring forth children; and your turning shall be to your husband, and he shall rule over you'; for this was said not to the whole human race, but to all women: or singularly, as 'And Adam called the name of his wife Life, because she is the mother of all the living': or for the beginning of the Old Testament, as 'Cursed be Canaan; he shall be a servant to his brothers.'
20. Sub Lege praedictiones quot modis factae sunt? [Delta] Sub Lege praedictiones quot modis factae sunt? [Mu] Duobus: aut pro his rebus quae sub Lege factae sunt, aut pro his quae sub Gratia. 21.
or principally for the New Testament; for when it is said, 'Let us make man to our image and likeness,' and 'Come, let us go down and confound their tongues,' the plural number is an indication of the Trinity, which is preached more openly in the New Testament. And when it is said, 'The blood of thy brother crieth to me from the earth,' the Passion of our Lord is foretold, as the Apostle bears witness in the Epistle to the Hebrews, because the sprinkling of the blood of Christ could cry to God on our behalf more than the blood of Abel had cried against his brother. 20. In how many ways were predictions made under the Law? [The Student] In how many ways were predictions made under the Law? [The Master] In two: either concerning those things which were done under the Law, or concerning those which are under Grace. 21.
How many predictions are there for the things done under the Law? [The Student] For those things which were done under the Law, how many kinds of predictions do we find? [The Master] About twenty-two: for either the increase of the people is foretold, as it is to Abraham, 'And thou shalt be a great and numerous nation'; or the promise of an inheritance, as it is, 'To thy seed I will give this land'; or the separating-out of the unworthy, as it is, 'Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman'; or vengeance upon the enemies of the people and reward to its friends, as it is, 'I will bless them that bless thee and curse them that curse thee';
關乎律法之下所成就的事,有多少預言?〔學生〕關乎律法之下所成就的事,我們找到多少種預言?〔教師〕約有二十二種:或是預言百姓的增多,如對亞伯拉罕所說的「你要成為強大眾多的國」;或是基業的應許,如「我要把這地賜給你的後裔」;或是把不配的人分別出去,如「把這使女和她兒子趕出去,因為使女的兒子不可與自主婦人的兒子一同承受產業」;或是向百姓的仇敵施報、向其朋友賜恩,如「為你祝福的,我必賜福與他;咒詛你的,我必咒詛他」;
1:85
or the deliverance of the people from their enemies, as it is, 'Thy seed shall be a stranger in a land not their own, and they shall go out thence with great provision,' and so forth; or the lineages and names of certain persons, as Isaac and Samson; or the eminence of descendants, as 'Kings shall come forth from thee'; or the manner of departure, as it is, 'But thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace, nourished in a good old age'; or the distinction of peoples, as it is, 'One people shall go before the other people, and the elder shall serve the younger'; or abundance, as it is, 'God shall give thee of the dew of heaven and of the fatness of the earth a plenty of corn and wine'; or divine aid, as it is, 'Behold, I am with thee, keeping thee in every way';
或是百姓脫離仇敵的拯救,如「你的後裔必在別人的地寄居,他們要從那裏帶著豐富的物資出來」等等;或是某些人的世系和名字,如以撒和參孫;或是後裔的尊榮,如「必有君王從你而出」;或是離世的方式,如「你必享高壽,安然歸到你列祖那裏」;或是民族間的分別,如「一族必強過一族,將來大的要服事小的」;或是豐盛,如「神必賜你天上的甘露、地上的肥土,並豐盛的五穀新酒」;或是神的幫助,如「看哪,我與你同在,在你所行的一切路上保守你」;

22. [The Student] Give predictions concerning the nations made on behalf of the people. [The Master] As it is, 'His hand against all, and the hand of all against him,' and 'Arise and go out from this place, for the Lord shall destroy the city.' 2. The visions, too, of Nebuchadnezzar and Pharaoh and other kings or nations, spoken through the prophets, do indeed relate to causes among the Gentiles; yet the intent regards the people, for whose vindication these several things came to pass. 22. Concerning the predictions under the Law fulfilled in Christ. [The Student] How many modes of prediction are there concerning Christ? [The Master] About twenty-six:

or Scripture signifies the Father's good pleasure concerning the mystery of the Incarnation, as it is, 'Behold my beloved child, in whom my soul is well pleased'; or the pouring-out of the Holy Spirit, which the man taken up by him assuredly merited, whether at the very beginning of the Incarnation, or in his growth, or in his baptism, or in his miracles, or in his teaching, or in his resurrection, as it is, 'I will put my Spirit upon him,' and 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; therefore he hath anointed me,' and the rest; or his carefulness toward his disciples, as it is, 'He shall not strive nor cry out, nor shall anyone hear his voice in the streets'; or his sitting upon a beast of burden, as it is, 'Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold thy king cometh, sitting upon a colt, the foal of an ass';
或者聖經指明父對道成肉身奧祕的喜悅,如「看哪,我所揀選、所親愛、我心所喜悅的孩子」;或是聖靈的澆灌,這是那被他取了的人所當得的,無論是在道成肉身之初,或在他的長大,或在他受洗,或在他行神蹟,或在他施教,或在他復活,如「我要將我的靈賜給他」,又「主的靈在我身上,因為他膏了我」等等;或是他對門徒的眷顧,如「他不爭競,不喧嚷,街上也沒有人聽見他的聲音」;或是他騎在驢駒上,如「錫安的女兒啊,不要懼怕;看哪,你的王來了,騎著驢駒,就是騎著母驢的駒子」;
1:93
or it signifies his sufferings or burial and the causes of them, as it is said, 'We saw him, and he had no form nor comeliness, but his appearance was without honor, lower than all men'; and again, 'a man in stripes and knowing how to bear humiliation, for his face was turned away and dishonored, and reckoned as nothing. He himself bears our sins and grieves for us, and we thought him to be in grief and in stripes and in affliction. But he was wounded for our iniquities and was made weak for our sins'; or the division of his garments, as it is, 'They divided my garments among themselves and cast lots upon my vesture';
或者指明他的受苦、埋葬以及其緣由,如所說的「我們看見他的時候,他無佳形美容,他的容貌毫無尊榮,比眾人更卑微」;又「他是受苦、深知擔當羞辱的人,因為他掩面不顧,被人輕視藐視,被人算為無有。他誠然擔當我們的罪,為我們憂傷,我們卻以為他受責罰、被擊打、受苦難。其實他為我們的過犯受害,為我們的罪孽被壓傷」;或是分了他的衣服,如「他們分了我的外衣,又為我的裏衣拈鬮」;
1:94
[Mu] Duobus modis haec solemus accipere:
or it signifies the resurrection of the Lord, as it is, 'Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, nor wilt thou give thy holy one to see corruption'; or the calling of the Son according to the humanity he assumed, as it is, 'Out of Egypt I called my son'; or the generation of his divinity before the beginning, as it is, 'Out of the womb before the day-star I begot thee'; or his second coming, as it is, 'Behold, upon the clouds of heaven as the Son of man.' 2. [The Student] Are all the predictions understood concerning our Savior alone? [The Master] In two ways we are accustomed to take these:
for some things are so foretold of his Person that they can fit no other, as it is read, 'The prince shall not fail from Judah, nor a leader from his loins, until he come for whom they are laid up'; but others are spoken on occasion of another person, yet in their meaning they look toward Christ, as it is, 'In thee and in thy seed shall all nations be blessed.' 23. Concerning the predictions pertaining under the Law to the calling of the Gentiles. [The Student] Since we have established the predictions spoken concerning Christ in the old Law, give those which are set down concerning the calling of the Gentiles. [The Master] We understand the predictions concerning the calling of the Gentiles to be set down in about seventeen modes:
for sometimes they signify their reception, as when it is said, 'I will provoke them to jealousy with that which is not a people; with a foolish nation I will anger them'; sometimes their infirmities, the casting-out of sins, and the teaching of better things, as when it is said, 'He sent me to proclaim to the poor, to preach release to the captives and sight to the blind'; sometimes the grace they received, whether of adoption or of miracles, as when it is said, 'Daughters of kings are in thy honor; the queen stood at thy right hand'; sometimes an admonition, as that which follows, 'Hearken, O daughter, and see and incline thine ear, and forget thy people'; sometimes the glorification which we owe to Christ, as when it is said, 'because he is the Lord thy God, and thou shalt adore him';
因為有時這些預言指明外邦人的蒙接納,如所說的「我要以那不成子民的觸動他們的憤恨,以愚昧的國惹他們發怒」;有時指明他們的軟弱、罪的除去和更美的教導,如所說的「他差遣我向貧窮的人宣講,向被擄的傳赦免,向瞎眼的傳復明」;有時指明他們所領受的恩典,無論是兒子的名分或是神蹟,如所說的「有君王的女兒在你尊貴婦女之中;王后佩戴俄斐金飾站在你右邊」;有時指明勸勉,如下文所說「女子啊,你要聽,要想,要側耳而聽,不要記念你的本族」;有時指明我們向基督所當歸的榮耀,如所說的「因為他是耶和華你的神,你當敬拜他」;
1:97
sometimes the blessedness and virtue which the faithful merit, as when it is said, 'Virgins shall be brought to the king after her'; sometimes the gladness in which they are, seeing their own progress, as when it is said, 'They shall be brought with joy and exultation'; sometimes the priesthood and the ecclesiastical order, as when it is said, 'Instead of thy fathers, sons are born to thee'; sometimes the spiritual building-up of the Church, as when it is said, 'out of the ivory houses, out of which they have delighted thee'; sometimes the ecclesiastical authority, as when it is said, 'thou shalt make them princes over all the earth'; sometimes the fullness of believers, as when it is said, 'the whole earth shall be filled with his glory; so be it, so be it';
有時指明信徒所當得的福分與德行,如所說的「必有童女隨從她被引到王前」;有時指明他們看見自己長進時所有的喜樂,如所說的「他們必歡喜快樂被引導」;有時指明祭司職分與教會的常規,如所說的「你的子孫要接續你的列祖」;有時指明教會屬靈的建造,如所說的「象牙宮中所出的,使你歡喜」;有時指明教會的權柄,如所說的「你要立他們在全地作首領」;有時指明信徒的眾多,如所說的「願他的榮耀充滿全地。阿們,阿們」;
1:98
sometimes endurance whether of temptation or of persecution, as when it is said, 'until he bring forth judgment unto victory; and in his name shall the nations hope'; sometimes the destruction of enemies, as when it is said, 'and his enemies shall lick the earth'; sometimes the peace in which the Church rejoices after persecutions, as when it is said, 'In his days justice and fullness of peace shall arise, until the moon be taken away'; sometimes the errors of heretics and the presence of Elijah, as when it is said, 'Behold, I send you Elijah the Tishbite, and he shall turn back the hearts of the fathers to the sons'; sometimes the hope of the faithful and the second coming of the Savior, as when it is said, 'and he himself shall be the expectation of the nations';
有時指明忍受試探或逼迫,如所說的「直到他使公理得勝;外邦人都要仰望他的名」;有時指明仇敵的滅亡,如所說的「他的仇敵必舔土」;有時指明教會在逼迫之後所享的平安,如所說的「在他的日子,公義要興旺,平安充足,直到月亮不再」;有時指明異端的錯謬與以利亞的來臨,如所說的「看哪,我必差遣提斯比人以利亞到你們那裏去;他必使父親的心轉向兒女」;有時指明信徒的盼望與救主的第二次降臨,如所說的「他必成為外邦人所盼望的」;
1:99
sometimes the baptism of John, as when it is said, 'Behold, I send my angel before thy face.' 24. Concerning the kinds of predictions which were given under Grace. [The Student] Since we have spoken of the kinds of predictions which are in the Law, give those which are read as set forth under Grace. [The Master] Of the predictions made under Grace, thirty-two kinds are found: for either the birth and life of John the Baptist is foretold, as is that whole speech through the angel to his father Zechariah and the prophecy of Zechariah himself; or the wondrous conception and nativity of the Savior, as is the prediction which the angel spoke to holy Mary, and the revelation to the Magi;
有時指明約翰的洗,如所說的「看哪,我要差遣我的使者在你前面」。24. 論恩典之下所賜的各種預言。〔學生〕既然我們已論及律法中的各種預言,請舉出那些記載為在恩典之下所發的預言。〔教師〕在恩典之下所作的預言,共有三十二種:或是預言施洗約翰的出生與生平,如藉天使對他父親撒迦利亞所說的全部話語,以及撒迦利亞自己的預言;或是預言救主奇妙的成孕與降生,如天使對聖馬利亞所說的預言,以及向博士的啟示;
1:100
or the unbelief and conversion of the Jews, as it is said, 'Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign that shall be contradicted'; or the reward of the heavenly kingdom, as it is, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand'; or the calling of the Gentiles, as it is said, 'Many shall come from the east and the west and shall recline with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven'; or the exclusion of the Hebrews, as is that which follows, 'but the children of this kingdom shall be cast out into the outer darkness'; or salvation through the preaching of the apostles, as when it is said, 'Come after me; I will make you to become fishers of men';
或是猶太人的不信與歸正,如所說的「看哪,這孩子被立,是要叫以色列中許多人跌倒、許多人興起,又要作毀謗的話柄」;或是天國的賞賜,如「你們應當悔改,因為天國近了」;或是外邦人的蒙召,如所說的「從東從西,將有許多人來,在天國裏與亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各一同坐席」;或是希伯來人的被棄絕,如下文所說「惟有本國的子民竟被趕到外邊黑暗裏去」;或是藉使徒傳道而得的拯救,如所說的「來跟從我,我要叫你們得人如得魚一樣」;

or the brightness of miracles, as it is said, 'He that believeth in me, the works that I do he also shall do, and greater than these shall he do'; or the temptation and persecutions of the just, as it is said, 'For they shall deliver you up in councils, and in their synagogues they shall scourge you,' and so forth; or the patience of the faithful amid adversities, as when it is said concerning the Church, 'and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it,' and again, 'the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force'; or the contemplation of the heavenly kingdom and of the second coming, which even in this life the souls of the saints enjoy, as it is, 'For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then shall he render to each one according to his works.

or the death, passion, and resurrection of the Savior, as it is said, 'From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests, and be put to death, and on the third day rise again'; or the general resurrection, as when the Apostle says, 'as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive'; or the resurrection of Christ and ours together, as it is said, 'when I shall be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all to myself'; or the betrayal of Judas, as it is said, 'Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?';
或是救主的受死、受難與復活,如所說的「從此耶穌才指示門徒,他必須上耶路撒冷去,受長老和祭司長許多的苦,並且被殺,第三日復活」;或是普遍的復活,如使徒所說「在亞當裏眾人都死了,照樣,在基督裏眾人也都要復活」;或是基督與我們一同的復活,如所說的「我若從地上被舉起來,就要吸引萬人來歸我」;或是猶大的出賣,如所說的「我不是揀選了你們十二個門徒嗎?但你們中間有一個是魔鬼」;
1:104
or the manner of the temptation and death of certain disciples, as the Lord foretold to Peter both his coming denial and the kind of his suffering, saying, 'before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice,' and 'when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee and lead thee whither thou wilt not'; or the presence of those who would seize Christ, as when he says, 'Arise, let us go; behold, he that shall betray me is at hand'; or the scattering of the apostles, as it is, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered'; or the finding of the ass's colt, which the Lord in the Gospel foretold to the disciples should be brought;
或是某些門徒受試探與受死的方式,如主向彼得預言他將來的否認以及受苦的樣式,說「雞叫以先,你要三次不認我」,又「你年老的時候,要伸出手來,別人要把你束上,帶你到不願意去的地方」;或是那些要捉拿基督之人的臨近,如他說「起來!我們走吧;看哪,那賣我的人近了」;或是使徒的分散,如「我要擊打牧人,羊群的羊就分散了」;或是驢駒的尋得,這是主在福音書中預先告訴門徒要牽來的;
1:105
aut antichristi praesentia, ut cum dicitur, "Nemo uos seducat ullo modo, quia nisi uenerit discessio primum et reuelatus fuerit homo peccati, filius perditionis qui contradicit" et cetera: (1f) aut Eliae praesentia, cum dicitur, "Elias ueniet primum": aut conscientia electorum, ut de Paulo, "uas electionis mihi est iste": aut aliqui non immutandi, sed gustaturi mortem praedicuntur, sicut apostolus, "Ecce mysterium dico uobis: Omnes quidem resurgemus, sed non omnes immutabimur": aut futura fames, sicut est Agabi prophetia: aut haeresium contrarietas, sicut dicitur, "Istud autem agnosce, quia in ultimis diebus exsurgent tempora maligna";
or the presence of Antichrist, as when it is said, 'Let no man deceive you by any means, for unless the falling-away come first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition who opposeth,' and so forth; or the presence of Elijah, as when it is said, 'Elijah shall come first'; or the conscience of the elect, as concerning Paul, 'this man is to me a vessel of election'; or it is foretold that some shall not be changed but shall taste death, as the Apostle says, 'Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall all indeed rise again, but we shall not all be changed'; or a future famine, as is the prophecy of Agabus; or the contrariety of heresies, as it is said, 'But know this, that in the last days perilous times shall arise';
或是敵基督的出現,如所說的「人不拘用甚麼法子,你們總不要被他誘惑;因為那日子以前,必有離道反教的事,並有那大罪人,就是那敵擋之沉淪之子,顯露出來」等等;或是以利亞的來臨,如所說的「以利亞固然先來」;或是選民的良心,如論到保羅「這人是我所揀選的器皿」;或是預言有些人不被改變,卻要嘗死味,如使徒所說「看哪,我把一件奧祕的事告訴你們:我們不是都要睡覺,乃是都要改變」;或是將來的饑荒,如亞迦布的預言;或是異端的紛爭,如所說的「但你要知道,末後的日子必有危險的時候來到」;
1:106
[Delta] Quomodo has praedictiones ad futurum saeculum dicimus pertinere?
and again, 'There shall be a time when they shall not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires they shall heap to themselves teachers'; or the grace of baptism, as it is, 'he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire'; or the destruction of Jerusalem and of the Jewish temple, as it is, 'Pray that your flight be not in winter or on the sabbath,' and 'Behold, your house shall be left to you desolate'; or the preaching of the Gospel, as it is said, 'And this Gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a testimony to all nations, and then shall the end come'; or the evils of the end itself together with the end, as when it is said, 'Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened.' [The Student] How do we say that these predictions pertain to the age to come?
[The Master] Just as we said concerning the receptions, that the things foretold before the Law had their intent toward the times of the Law or of Grace, and again that the things foretold under the Law prefigured Grace, and that the things under Grace had their cause and reward in the heavenly kingdom: so it is gathered that the whole intent of the predictions looks to the goods of the age to come. 25. Concerning the effects of the predictions. [The Student] Since we have now set forth three parts of those things which we said pertain to the age to come, that is, the receptions and the figures and the predictions, now the fourth part remains, that we may discuss the effects. What, then, are the effects?
[The Master] The effects are the outcomes of those things which either the intent of the receptions foresaw, or the likeness of the types prefigured, or the knowledge of the predictions foretold. 2. [The Student] How many are the times of the effects? [The Master] Three: for either they were accomplished in the time of the Law, the things that were foretold, or they now come to pass under Grace, or they are to be fulfilled in the age to come. 26. What was the reason for making the present age. [The Student] If all things that have been done in the present age were looking toward the age to come, what need was there for the present age to be made by God?
1:109
[Mu] Quia decuit ut rationales creaturae prius discerent et exercitarentur in dubiis ac tunc aeternis postea fruerentur, et merito data uiderentur probatis et gratiora fierent reminiscentibus transacta certamina, et plus glorificarent donatorem qui pios et in hoc saeculo iuuit ut uincerent et uictoribus praemia aeterna concessit. 27. De doctrina rationalium in hoc saeculo. [Delta] Quot modis in hoc saeculo rationalium doctrina peragitur? [Mu] Duobus: aut ex intellegentia rerum factarum, sicut dicit apostolus quia "Inuisibilia eius a creatura mundi, per ea quae facta sunt intellecta, conspiciuntur";
[The Master] Because it was fitting that the rational creatures should first learn and be exercised in uncertainties, and then afterward enjoy eternal things; and that what was given might seem deservedly bestowed upon those who were proved, and might become more welcome to those who remembered the contests they had passed through; and that they might the more glorify the Giver, who both helped the godly in this age so that they might conquer, and granted eternal rewards to the victors. 27. Concerning the teaching of rational beings in this age. [The Student] In how many ways is the teaching of rational beings carried out in this age? [The Master] In two: either from the understanding of the things that have been made, as the Apostle says that 'the invisible things of him, from the creation of the world, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made';
〔教師〕因為這是合宜的,就是理性受造之物應當先在不確定中學習、操練,然後才享受永恆之物;又叫所賜的恩在被試驗的人看來確是應得的,且在那些記念自己所經歷之爭戰的人看來更為可貴;並叫他們更加榮耀那賜恩者,因他既在這世代幫助敬虔的人得勝,又把永遠的賞賜賜給得勝的人。27. 論這世代中理性之物所受的教導。〔學生〕在這世代中,理性之物的教導是以幾種方式進行的?〔教師〕兩種:或是藉著對受造之物的領悟,如使徒所說「自從造天地以來,神那看不見的事,藉著所造之物,就可以曉得,叫人看見」;
1:110
2. [Delta] Quam dicimus diuinae doctrinae intentionem?
for it is necessary that he who considers the world and all things placed in it, distinguished in their modes and orders, should understand that there is a God who both made and governs these things: or from the divine Scriptures, which, as we have said, are divided into four kinds: the historical, the prophetic, the proverbial, and that which simply teaches. 28. What things are to be observed in the understanding of the Scriptures? [The Student] What are the things we ought to keep in mind in the understanding of the divine Scriptures? [The Master] That the things which are said should befit the speaker; that they should not disagree with the causes for which they are said; that they should accord with the times, places, order, and intent. 2. [The Student] What do we call the intent of the divine teaching?
29. Vnde libri religionis catholicae asseruntur? [Delta] Vnde probamus libros religionis nostrae diuina esse inspiratione conscriptos? [Mu] Ex multis, quorum prima est ipsius scripturae ueritas; deinde ordo rerum, consonantia praeceptorum, modus locutionis sine ambitu puritasque uerborum.
[The Master] That which the Lord himself declared: that we love God with our whole heart and with our whole soul, and our neighbors as ourselves. But the corruption of the teaching is, on the contrary, not to love God or one's neighbor. [The Student] What is the cause of this contrariety? [The Master] The cause of evils is in those very persons who are evil; for while rational creatures use disorderly the free will rightly granted them by God, they have become to themselves the cause both of malice and of punishment. 29. Whence are the books of the Catholic religion vouched for? [The Student] Whence do we prove that the books of our religion were written by divine inspiration? [The Master] From many things, of which the first is the very truth of the Scripture; then the order of its matters, the harmony of its precepts, the manner of speech free of pomp, and the purity of its words.
1:112
Additur conscribentium et praedicantium qualitas, quod diuina homines, excelsa uiles, infacundi subtilia non, nisi diuino repleti spiritu, tradidissent; tum praedicationis uirtus, quae mundum, licet a paucis despectis praedicaretur, obtinuit. 2. 30. Vbi sit fides religioni necessaria.
There is added the character of those who wrote and preached, in that men would not have delivered divine things, lofty things being themselves lowly, and subtle things being themselves uneloquent, unless they had been filled with the divine Spirit; then the power of the preaching, which, though preached by a few despised men, took possession of the world. 2. To these are added the testimony of opposites, such as of the Sibyls or the philosophers; the casting-out of adversaries; the usefulness of those who follow; the outcome of those things which were foretold through the receptions and figures and predictions; and lastly the miracles continually wrought, until the Scripture itself was received by the nations—concerning which it now suffices to count this as the greatest miracle, that it is known to have been received by all. 30. Where faith is necessary to religion.
1:113
[The Student] But if the proofs of the divine Scriptures are sufficient, what need is there of faith for religion? [The Master] Our faith is indeed above reason; yet it is not taken up rashly and without reason: for those things which reason teaches, faith understands; and where reason fails, faith runs on ahead. For we do not believe whatever we have heard in any manner, but those things which reason does not disprove. But those things which we cannot fully attain by reason, we confess with a believing prudence.
