7:1
IN BASILIA. Post evangelicum bisseni dogma senatus, Quod regnum Chrisli toto jam personat orbe, Postque sacrum Pauli stylum, quo curia mundi Victa suos tandem stupuit siluisse sophistas, Arctous, Martine, tibi in extrema recessus PandiLur, inque via fidei patet invia tellus. Virtutum signis, meritorum et laude tuorum, Excitat affectum Christi Germania frigens, Flagrat et accenso|divini Spiritus igne, Solvit ab infenso strictas Aquilone pruinas. Immanes, variasque pio sub foedere Christi Asciscis gentes. Alamannus, Saxo, Toringus, Pannonius, Rugus, Sclavus, Nara, Sarmata, Datus, Ostrogothus, Francus, Burgundio, Dacus, Alanus, Te duce nosse Deum gaudent.
AT BRAGA. After the gospel teaching of the twelve-membered senate, by which the kingdom of Christ now resounds through the whole world, and after the sacred pen of Paul, by which the court of the world, vanquished, at last marvelled that its sophists had fallen silent—the northern recess is opened to you, Martin, in the farthest parts, and the trackless land lies open along the way of faith. By the signs of your virtues and the praise of your merits, Germany, frozen, is roused to affection for Christ; it blazes, and is kindled with the fire of the divine Spirit, and it loosens the frosts bound fast by the hostile North Wind. The savage and varied nations under the holy covenant of Christ you win over: the Alaman, the Saxon, the Thuringian, the Pannonian, the Rugian, the Slav, the Naharvalian, the Sarmatian, the Datian, the Ostrogoth, the Frank, the Burgundian, the Dacian, the Alan—with you as their leader, they rejoice to know God.
7:2
tua signa Suevos Admirans didicit Gdei quo tramite pergat, Devotusque tuis meritis hæc atria claro Culmine sustollens, Christi venerabile templum Constituit, quo clara Vigens, Martine, tuorum Gratia signorum totis te adesse precatur. Electum, propriumque tenet te Gallia gaudens Pastorem, teneat Gallaecia tola patronum. EJUSDEM IN REFECTORIO.
Admiring your signs, the Sueve has learned by what path of faith he should proceed; and devoted to your merits, raising these halls aloft with a bright summit, he has established a venerable temple of Christ, wherein the renowned grace of your signs, flourishing, Martin, beseeches you to be present in all things. You the rejoicing land of Gaul holds as its chosen and proper shepherd; may all Galicia hold you as its patron. BY THE SAME, IN THE REFECTORY. Here the meals are not adorned with gilded couches: Assyrian purple has given you no semicircular dining-couch. Nor amid the manifold hollows of a gleaming sideboard shall shining dishes be set before us by the cook's art. Nor here will a goblet be given whose plated side a twisted handle clasps with ruddy metal. I have no wines of Gaza, of Chios, of Falernum, nor such as you might drink, sent from the Sareptan vine.
But whatever the scanty store of a meagre table does not supply, this, we pray, may a grace full of you supply.
