1:1
" sextum: Opus fuit mediatione alicuius per quem accipere possemus haec bona a Deo.
By the power of our Lord Jesus Christ we begin to write the volume of disputations, authored by Mar Thomas of Edessa, master of the religion of God, and Mar Kaiura his fellow in the labor. The first disputation, by Mar Thomas: On the fleshly Nativity of our Lord Christ. Chapter one: To him who asked that he commit that disputation to writing. The second: What are the chief points of its causes. The third: An investigation concerning the cause for which we celebrate this feast. The fourth: What are the goods that have been given to us through our Lord Jesus Christ. The fifth: For what cause these very goods were not revealed until now. The sixth: There was need of the mediation of someone through whom we might receive these goods from God.
The seventh: For what reasons God at this time took nothing else for His revelation save a man from among us. The eighth: That our Lord Christ was not a mere man (psilos anthropos). The ninth: For what reason the manhood of our Lord was not taken from the earth, but from a virgin without the union of a man. The tenth: For what cause God ordained that the manhood of our Lord should be conceived in the springtime. The eleventh: An exhortation to an honorable life. CHAPTER ONE. To him who asked that he commit it to writing.
1:3
Tuum quod unacum fratribus claris coenobii nostri mihi dedisti utile consilium, tuumque iucundum mandatum, O electe Dei, Mar Moyses Lector, diversas cogitationes in me excitarunt, et in varias considerationes me deiecerunt.
The useful counsel which you, together with the illustrious brothers of our monastery, gave me, and your welcome charge, O chosen one of God, Mar Moses the Lector, stirred up diverse thoughts in me and cast me into various considerations. For you charged me that I should also commit to writing that very cause of the glorious Nativity of our Lord and Savior Christ, which I spoke after our holy Master, Mar Aba the Interpreter; which indeed I tremble to do, lest…; …I be easily reckoned by those who love to find fault with cause and without cause; likewise, I fear to not obey the charge, lest I be held a violator of the precept and a transgressor of the counsel by men who say nothing except with a view to the religion of the living God.
1:4
Sed dum in his similibusque cogitationibus morabar, adiudicavi conveniens mihi esse, voluntati vestrae satisfacere, aliis quidem relinquens loqui prout velint, ne, dum timeo verba invida quae nullam apud Deum faciunt iniuriam, vobis per voluntatem bonam atque vitam perfectam Christo placentibus, murmurandi in me causam praeberem, eo quod mandato vestro non obtemperaverim. Rogans itaque auxilium precum vestrarum Christo acceptabilium, ecce incumbo ad voluntatem vestram explendam.
But while I lingered in these and the like thoughts, I judged it fitting for me to satisfy your will, leaving others indeed to speak as they please, lest, while I fear the envious words which do no injury before God, I should give to you—who are pleasing to Christ through good will and a perfect life—occasion for murmuring against me, in that I had not obeyed your charge. Therefore, asking the help of your prayers acceptable to Christ, behold, I apply myself to fulfilling your will.
1:5
This above all I ask of you, and of those who in whatever way shall come upon these writings: that you in no way form a false opinion of me, as though I had set out to say or write hoping that I, weak as I am, could in this treatise so deliver all the things that are our Master's just as he himself said them. Rather, this alone is the confidence I have in my discourses—and this proceeds from an inmost conviction—that all my words stand in such relation to the sayings of our Master that one is led from these to those as from an image to its prototype, and as from a shadow to the body by which it is cast.
1:6
Quemadmodum insuper in loco quo sese extendunt radii solis, lucerna parva non est apta ad lucem dandam, sic etiam haec mea deperibunt, cum illa magistri nostri manifestant suarum cogitationum splendores. Faciam igitur divisionem in capita quibus tota disputatio ad maiorem utilitatem disponitur; et deinde incipiam illa dicere quae postulat ordo singularum rerum in ipsa disputatione. Sciunt enim sapientia et intellectus vestrum, quod illos, qui ambulaturi sunt per viam quotcumque milliarium quam probe non noscunt, multum adiuvat accipere signa et indicia quae sunt in via, et post hoc ambulare incipient;
Moreover, just as in the place where the rays of the sun extend, a small lamp is not fit to give light, so also these words of mine shall perish when those of our Master make manifest the splendors of their thoughts. I shall therefore make a division into chapters, by which the whole disputation is arranged for greater usefulness; and then I shall begin to say those things which the order of the several matters requires in the disputation itself. For your wisdom and understanding know that those who are about to walk along a road of however many miles which they do not well know, are greatly helped by receiving the signs and marks that are along the way, and after this they will begin to walk;
再者,正如在太陽光線所及之處,一盞小燈不足以發光;照樣,當我們師傅的言論彰顯其思想的光輝時,我這些話語也將消逝。因此我要劃分成章節,使整篇論辯得以為著更大的益處而編排;然後我要開始述說論辯本身按各事次序所要求的內容。因為你們的智慧與悟性知道:凡要走一段他們不甚熟悉、不知多少里路之路的人,沿途領受路上的標記與指示,會大得幫助,此後他們便起步而行;
1:7
CAPUT SECUNDUM. Quaenam sint capita eiusdem disputationis.
so it happens to them, if they keep an attentive mind, that they easily walk from sign to sign and from mark to mark all the way to the end of the road without error. And if this is so, it is manifest that it is much more necessary for those who wish to commit to memory a discourse of however many sentences, that they should first learn what are the several chapters of the treatise itself. And if this be done, when they are compelled to deliver the discourse, although the written text is not at hand from which to recall the whole discourse to memory, nevertheless, because they have previously learned the number and title of all the chapters, they will be able easily to deliver the discourse, even if they omit some little part of those things which are in the midst of the chapters. CHAPTER TWO. What are the chapters of this disputation.
Deinde postquam ea enarraverimus manifestaque fecerimus, quaeritur a nobis:
Although it is plain to everyone that the feast which we celebrate today is the Nativity of Christ, yet the mind is not content merely to learn this, that it is the feast of the Nativity of our Lord, but it more often takes up this question also: why do we celebrate it? When we have investigated and found that it is on account of the great goods which have been given to us through our Lord Christ, who was born today for all creatures, so that, by honoring their memory and fulfilling the will of their giver, the goods which we have may be made firm, we are asked to say what these goods are. Then, after we have narrated them and made them manifest, it is asked of us:
why were goods that are thus useful to all neither known nor revealed until now? Again, after we have given an excuse concerning these matters also—that they were not revealed—it is asked that we establish yet another thing: namely, that without the mediation of someone it was impossible for these very goods to come to us from God. When thereafter we have shown that there was altogether need of someone through whom we might be brought to the receiving of them, it is asked: why was the revelation made through none other than a man? And when we have shown the many things that required the taking of a man from among us, another question arises: if for these reasons a man was necessarily needed, could he then by himself alone redeem us?
Thus we teach that the economy necessarily requires that God also be in that man, so that it may be known that a mere man could not redeem us, nor could we, without the mediation of someone, receive from God the goods which had been prepared for us.
But after it has been shown by our demonstration that we today celebrate the feast of His Nativity by reason of the good things which have been given to us through our Lord Christ, and after it has been made clear what those good things are, and once the excuse has been admitted explaining why they were not revealed before, and after it has appeared that for their revelation there was need of the mediation of someone who was nothing other than a man — yet not a mere man, but such a one in whom dwelt God, mighty unto all those things which He accomplished for our redemption in His dispensation — when all these things have been demonstrated, then the question is asked: for what reason did God not take this man from the earth, as He did the first man?
Or if it was necessary that He should be born of a woman, why was He born of a virgin without the seed of a man? After the cause of this has been shown, there remains this to be demonstrated: why did God ordain that He should be conceived in the springtime? And what do we understand from the fact that He was born in this season? And so, after these things, we shall make an end of the whole discussion by adding a brief exhortation suited to the confirmation and amendment of the hearers. CHAPTER THREE. An inquiry into the cause for which we celebrate this feast of the holy Nativity. It is evident that this feast which we celebrate today, and which the holy Church everywhere celebrates with great joy, is the feast of the Nativity of Christ, our Lord.
1:13
Ecce enim hoc simul praedicatur ab ore omnium rationalium, hominum scilicet et mulierum, et a pueris usque ad senes. Quaeritur autem: numquid igitur propter novitatem speciei nativitatis eius, quae sine concubitu fuit, hodie congregamur et hoc festum celebramus, admirando potestatem quae potuit eum ex Maria Virgine formare sine semine virili? Notum est, rem magnam esse atque praestantem, quod virgo gignat siue viri concubitu. Attamen quantamvis exhibeat virtutis praestantiam, hoc solum sufficiens non fuit ut, sine aliis mox dicendis, causa fieret huius festi in omni regione. Videmus enim alia praestantia quae patrata fuerunt apud homines tempore eorum generationis;
For behold, this is proclaimed alike from the mouth of all rational beings, that is, of men and women, and from children even to the aged. But the question is asked: do we then assemble today and celebrate this feast on account of the novelty of the manner of His birth, which was without intercourse, marvelling at the power which was able to form Him from the Virgin Mary without the seed of a man? It is known that it is a great and excellent thing that a virgin should give birth apart from a man's embrace. Yet however great a pre-eminence of power this may display, this alone was not sufficient — without the other things presently to be mentioned — to become the cause of this feast in every region. For we behold other excellent things that were wrought among men at the time of their birth;
因為看哪,這事乃是從一切有理性者——就是男人和女人——的口中同被傳揚,從孩童直到老年人。然而有人問道:難道我們今日聚集並慶祝這節期,是因著祂出生方式的新奇,就是那無交合的出生,是因驚奇那能使祂從童貞女馬利亞、無男人精種而成形的權能麼?人都知道,童女不經男人擁抱而生育,乃是一件偉大而卓越的事。然而,這事無論顯出何等卓越的能力,單憑這一點,若沒有以下即將提及的其他事,仍不足以在各地成為這節期的緣由。因為我們看見,在人受生的時候,也有其他卓越的事曾發生過;
1:14
and because no others followed after the manner of their formation, we rightly do not celebrate the feast of their nativity, as for example of Adam, and of Eve, and of Isaac, and of others of this kind. And indeed each of these is more worthy of wonder than the next, and proclaims the divine power more greatly. First let us consider the nativity of Isaac, how great it was: namely, that a son was born of a barren and aged woman. Either of these by itself would have been enough to hinder nature from giving fruit; how much more when both were present together, old age and barrenness! Yet here it was indeed from seed; but what does seed avail amid barrenness and old age?
For just as it is a great miracle if someone sows some kind of seed upon a rock, or casts it into a furnace of fire, or suspends it in water or in air, and from any one of these finds fruit; likewise even if someone in old age and barrenness should pour out seed ten thousand times, it is a great miracle if a son is born where only one of these conditions is present, much less in the present case: for both were found in Sarah. In blessed Mary one thing was lacking to the order of nature, namely the reception of seed; but in Sarah, as I have said, there was a twofold impediment, old age and barrenness.
It is more credible that an unsown earth should bring forth, than that grains of wheat which fall into a furnace of fire should give fruit — even though things difficult and things easy are alike possible with God. We indeed, because we possess a limited power, do not deal equally with kinds of clay and of bronze; but to God nothing is harder than another, since He is not limited in power, and His mere nod suffices for all things. And if the nativity of Isaac is wonderful, yet the nativity of Eve is more wonderful.
For there was neither womb, nor matrix, nor seed, but a rib from the side — and that moreover the side of a male — from which a woman was made, not growing moderately and gradually with the continual succession of time, but suddenly rising up in the twinkling of an eye and exhibiting a perfect stature. But still more wonderful is the thing, namely the generation of Adam: for Eve was living from a living thing and sensitive from a sensitive thing; but Adam, living and rational and sensitive, was made from earth, which partakes of none of these. If, then, these things are astounding, and one more wonderful than another — and yet they are not celebrated with a feast — does the Church everywhere celebrate a feast such as today's merely because of the novelty of the matter?
But it is evident that we do not celebrate this feast looking to these external things. For the Magi themselves, when by divine grace stirred up in whatever manner they went up to adore Him, did not offer Him gifts which signified this novelty of the matter, but gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. Frankincense: to make manifest that He who was born is a temple of God, in which it was to come to pass that the Divinity should be incorporeally adored by all rational beings, as in an indissoluble temple. Gold: to show that it now befits men to receive His counsels and precepts, and to obey Him with all their strength. Myrrh: to signify that by His own death He should conquer death, and acquire a kingdom in no way to be shaken.
It is evident that by divine revelation they offered these things which they offered to Him. Likewise the Angel, when he was revealed to the shepherds and announced to them, did not preach to them that our Lord was born of a virgin. For what did he say to them? 'I announce to you indeed great joy which shall be to all the world.' And why does he say: 'For today is born to you a Saviour, who is the Lord Christ, in the city of David'? He makes mention of the city of David, to show that in Him who is born today the promises of God to the fathers are fulfilled; and that in Him all peoples shall be blessed, according to the promises to Abraham: 'In thy seed shall all peoples be blessed'; and to show also that upon Him rests and finds its outcome that promise to David:
'Of the fruit of thy womb I will set upon thy throne'; and, 'Of His kingdom there shall be no end'; and, 'The Lord God shall give Him the throne of David His father, and of His kingdom there shall be no end.' And He named Him Lord, because He is the Lord of all creatures by reason of His conjunction with God the Word. 'God hath made Him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom ye crucified.' He is Christ: because He was set apart and chosen for this work. He Himself is the true Christ: for whereas all princes were anointed with the legal oil, He was anointed by the Holy Spirit. 'Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.' He is Saviour:
1:21
because through Him we are now to be redeemed from sin, and from death, and from corruption, and from the servitude of Satan; which therefore is joy to all the world of the nations, who are made worthy of kinship with the Divine; and to the people of Israel, because the promises to their fathers are fulfilled; because all alike are set free from all the afflictions of this world. It is evident that the angels too share with us in joy, in that they also greatly rejoice in our change to virtue.
Nor does the holy Church make commemoration of John the Baptist each year because he was born of old age and barrenness, but on account of the works that were wrought through him, and on account of his perfect and sublime life, and his death which was for the worship of God; so that, while we recall all these things of his to mind, we may be diligent to imitate them as far as is possible, that we may become worthy to attain with him to the delight of heavenly good things. And this we do by celebrating the memory of all the holy fathers and of those who were martyrs for Christ, each in his own order.
CAPUT QUARTUM.
We therefore, for this very same reason which I stated beforehand, while we celebrate this glorious and venerable feast of the Nativity of Christ our Lord, do not attend merely to this new manner of His generation outwardly, which was without intercourse — the cause of which we shall indeed state later — but we celebrate it on account of these ineffable good things which have been given to all creatures through Christ, our hope; so that, by cherishing their memory, and by receiving the teaching which concerns them, we may conform our life to the will of their Giver, that we may become worthy to ascend to the heavens, and to become partakers of the good things which are reserved for those who rightly believe and lead their life according to the pattern of their faith. CHAPTER FOUR.
What are the good things that have been given to us through our Lord Christ. It is needful to state what these good things are which have been decreed by God to be given to us through our Lord Christ, and for the establishing of which we assemble today, celebrating this feast. These indeed we learn from the holy angels, who at the time of the Nativity of our Redeemer, crying out with great joy, said thus: 'Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace; and hope to men.' In these three sentences are indicated in summary all the good things that have been given to us through our Lord Christ.
The holy angels, since in respect of creation they are our fellows, when they had seen us fallen from the health of the worship of God, and taken captive by the disease of idol-worship, and utterly wasted away in the service of demons, and sick in the foulness of our works, were grieved and angered; and yet they did not set themselves to do even one of those things that are necessary and useful for our healing; but on the contrary they would have demanded our excision, as of putrid members, and our dismissal from communion with them, had not the Lord of all, the good God, on account of the hope of our amendment and of our conversion to Himself, subjected them to Himself, as it is written:
'The creature indeed was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of Him who subjected it in hope.' They reckoned their labour on our behalf vain and useless so long as we were not in the worship of God our Creator and Benefactor; yet on account of the hope of things to come they persevered in whatever manner in their ministry on our behalf, since God had confirmed in them the hope of our change to virtue, by the cry of the blood of Abel, and by the translation of Enoch, and by the ascension of Elijah, and by the fact that God at no time, nor through generations of generations, ceased to dispense those things which should bring help to our redemption and to our return to the truth.
1:27
Recte igitur eis tanquam membris sanis creationis, perseverantibus in sanitate amoris sui Domini, in peccatores indignantibus, meliorumque spem expectantibus, revelata sunt a Deo bona quae per Christum Dominum nostrum universae creationi dari decreta sunt. Gaudio itaque magno clamabant dicentes: Gloria Deo in excelsis; et pax super terram; et spes hominibus . Inique quidem oppressa fuit hucusque laus Deo ab hominibus debita. Idola muta adorabantur; Satanas colobatur; gaudebant genii mali; laetabantur daemones; impudici erant homines atque fraudatores; in sua inclinatione ad turpia, impulsu diaboli omnia mala facile patrabant.
Rightly, therefore, to them as to sound members of the creation, persevering in the health of love toward their Lord, indignant against sinners, and awaiting the hope of better things, were revealed by God the good things which were decreed to be given to the whole creation through Christ our Lord. And so with great joy they cried out, saying: 'Glory to God in the highest; and peace upon earth; and hope to men.' Unjustly indeed was the praise due to God from men oppressed until now. Mute idols were adored; Satan was worshipped; evil spirits rejoiced; demons were glad; men were shameless and deceivers; in their inclination to base things, at the impulse of the devil they easily perpetrated all evils.
1:28
Nunc vero per hunc qui iuxta promissiones divinas es semine David natus est, revertitur ad Deum laus ei ab omnibus debita; ipse cognoscitur ut omnium essentialiter altissimus maximeque supremus, facior omnium atque benefactor; congregantur homines e dispersione cultus idolorum et unanimiter revertuntur a servitio malorum geniorum; confunduntur daemones; cadit diabolus; surgunt homines; placent suo Creatori per scientiam veritatis et per vitam honestam, et omnia praevia turpia deponunt. Propter haec omnia, super terram est pax, quia scilicet homines revertuntur ab adoratione operis manuum suarum, adorant supreme Deum, nostri ipsorumque Factorem, se gerendo iuxta voluntatem eius;
But now, through Him who according to the divine promises was born of the seed of David, the praise due to God from all is restored to Him; He is acknowledged as essentially the most high and supreme of all, the Maker of all and the Benefactor; men are gathered from the dispersion of idol-worship and with one accord turn back from the service of evil spirits; the demons are confounded; the devil falls; men arise; they please their Creator through the knowledge of the truth and through an honest life, and lay aside all their former base things. On account of all these things, there is peace upon the earth, namely because men turn back from the adoration of the work of their own hands, and supremely adore God, the Maker of us and of themselves, conducting themselves according to His will;
但如今,藉著那照神的應許從大衛後裔所生的這位,眾人理當歸給神的讚美都歸回於祂;祂被承認為一切之中本質上至高、最為崇高者,萬有的創造者與施恩者;人從拜偶像的分散中被聚集,同心合意地從事奉惡靈中轉回;鬼魔被攪亂;魔鬼跌倒;人興起;他們藉著對真理的認識並藉著正直的生活討他們創造者的喜悅,並脫去從前一切卑賤之事。為著這一切,地上便有了平安,就是因為人從敬拜自己手所造之物中轉回,至高地敬拜神,就是我們和他們自己的創造者,照著祂的旨意行事為人;
1:29
and tranquillity and peace and reconciliation reign on earth. For the Creator had been angered against His creatures, and was threatening all men with punishments according to the measure of their misdeeds; but now, through Him who is born, He has toward them a fitting reconciliation. We also, the angels, had been angered against them, as zealous servants of our Lord, and as ministers and attendants of our Benefactor; but now, just as they strive the more to please the Maker of all the world, so we kindle our love toward them, and increase our care for them, and even amplify our solicitude for their benefit, and hold them as sound members, and love them as our dear fellows.
Ipse vero homo habet erga seipsum pacem infinitam.
But also all the peoples who had been divided against one another — this one adored the sun, and this one the moon, and another the stars, and another something else, while their enmity against one another was various according to the diverse kinds of those things which were called gods by them — now all possess concord and the love of the worship of God; and together with the people of Israel, who had all even been rejected by Him (God) from participation with all His holy and blessed ones, they are gathered through love and concord, as scattered members into one body of the worship of God, all former discord being dissipated. And man himself has toward himself infinite peace.
1:31
Eo enim quod corpus eius est mortale, et anima eius immortalis, quanto mortalia immortalibus contraria sunt, tanto operatio corporis opponitur animae; ipsa vero, eo quod est elevata et discernens et immortalis et accipit scientiam Dei et doctrinam eius praeceptorum, ad opus virtutis inclinat. Corpus autem quia non est rationale nec discernens, sed est mortale, ad visibilia attrahitur et eorum amore tenetur. Homo itaque habuit in seipsum colluctationem incessantem, quam solvit Dominus noster Christus, corpus immortale faciens, et eradicans ab eo omnem attractionem ad res fluxas; ac simul ipse ei animaeque firmitatem largitur;
For because his body is mortal, and his soul immortal, as much as mortal things are contrary to immortal things, so much is the operation of the body opposed to the soul; but the soul itself, because it is elevated and discerning and immortal, and receives the knowledge of God and the teaching of His precepts, inclines to the work of virtue. The body, however, because it is not rational nor discerning, but is mortal, is drawn to visible things and held by love of them. And so man had within himself an unceasing struggle, which our Lord Christ has resolved, making the body immortal, and rooting out from it every attraction to transient things; and at the same time He bestows firmness upon it and upon the soul;
因為他的身體是必死的,他的魂是不死的,必死之物與不死之物何等相反,身體的活動也照樣何等與魂相對;但魂自己,因它是被高舉、有分辨、不死的,並領受對神的認識和祂誡命的教訓,便傾向美德的工作。然而身體因它沒有理性、不能分辨,乃是必死的,便被吸引到可見之物,並被對這些之物的愛所轄制。於是人在自己裏面有了不止息的爭戰,這爭戰我們的主基督已經解開了,祂使身體成為不死的,並從其中根除一切對流逝之物的吸引;同時祂也賜給身體和魂以堅固;
1:32
so that without distress he may be able to do the will of God, and to please Him without hindrance. Now all these riches of peace reign, in that men turn back to their Creator, and glorify and exalt Him alone as the cause of all good things, anxiously taking care to please Him through an honest life: there is the peace of the Creator with His creatures, and of us, the angels, with men, and of all peoples with one another and with the people of Israel, and of man himself with himself. After all these things nothing else is to be expected save the hope of heavenly good things — a hope indeed good for men.
A firm confidence therefore, and a great good hope, of the extirpation of sin, and of deliverance from demons and from the devil, and of release from the law of death, and of the abrogation of the decree of corruptibility, and of resurrection from the dead, and of the gift of immortality, and of participation in incorruptibility, and of the grace of the adoption of sons, and of ascension to the heavens, and of communion with all the saints of God, has been given to us; which things indeed are among those heavenly good things that pass not away nor fail unto eternity.
1:34
Bona igitur quae nobis data sunt per Dominum nostrum Christum, O frater noster venerabilis, ad quae firmanda hodie hoc festum celebramus, haec sunt, iuxta interpretationem illorum verborum quae ab eis (angelis) dicta sunt. Quid vem melius fuit omnibus populis atque praestantius quam cognoscere Deum Creatorem suum et causam omnium bonorum suorum? Nihil tale dari cognoscitur. Bona enim omnia huius mundi, etiamsi coniunctim inveniantur, ubi non est Dei cultus, sunt tamen [omnia] aequaliter inutilia;
The good things, therefore, which have been given to us through our Lord Christ, O our venerable brother, for the establishing of which we celebrate this feast today, are these, according to the interpretation of those words which were spoken by them (the angels). For what was better and more excellent for all peoples than to know God their Creator and the cause of all their good things? Nothing of the kind is known to be given. For all the good things of this world, even if found joined together, where the worship of God is not, are nevertheless all alike useless;
所以,我們可敬的弟兄啊,那藉著我們的主基督所賜給我們的美善,就是為要堅固這些美善我們今日才慶祝這節期的,乃是這些,正照著那些被他們(天使)所說之話的解釋。因為對萬民而言,有甚麼比認識神,他們的創造者,並一切美善的根源,更美更卓越的呢?沒有人知道有這樣的事可賜。因為這世界一切的美善,縱然聚集在一起,在沒有敬拜神之處,仍然都同樣是無益的;
1:35
but where the worship of God is present, which is shown in the confession of faith and in works, although in some way affliction may be found for a short time, yet all joyful and pleasing things will come together, especially after our departure from this world. For just as when someone wishes to go to the royal court, and when he begins to walk he strays from the way so that he goes out into an uninhabited desert, or even though he carry provisions, however much, these will nevertheless fail and be consumed, and thereupon it will be left to him to die, since he has not reached the place to which he had promised to go:
1:36
talis est ille qui errat a via recta et a cultu Dei veri, omneque etiam vitae suae viaticum, quamvis (multum) ei praesto sit, peribit, et regnum Dei non attinget, sed poena incessanti a Deo punietur. Etiamsi contingat quod ei sint opera quae videntur bona, similis tamen est fodienti puteum in terra, nec tamen quantumvis alte effodiat, invenit arteriam aquae. Nullum enim potestatem habent idola suis adoratoribus benefacere. Sed, [aliquis dicet] in nomine dei facit haec opera sua pulchra! [utique, respondemus] constat autem neminem esse deum eo solo quod se deum dicit. Quodnam vero ex hoc lucrum? Nullum dari cognoscitur. Si enim quis onustus fuerit debito quod regno debet ex quocumque opere;
such is he who strays from the right way and from the worship of the true God, and even all the provision of his life, however much it be at hand for him, will perish, and he will not attain the kingdom of God, but will be punished with unceasing punishment by God. Even if it should happen that he has works which seem good, he is nevertheless like one digging a well in the earth, who yet, however deep he digs, finds no vein of water. For idols have no power to do good to their worshippers. But — someone will say — he does these fair works of his in the name of a god! Certainly, we reply; yet it is plain that no one is a god merely because he calls himself a god. And what gain comes from this? None is known to be given. For if someone is burdened with a debt which he owes to the kingdom by any work whatever;
那偏離正道並偏離敬拜真神之人,正是如此,連他一生一切的糧食,無論在他手邊有多少,都要滅亡,他必不能得著神的國,反要被神以不止息的刑罰責罰。縱然他偶有看似良善的行為,他仍像一個在地上挖井的人,無論挖得多深,總找不著水脈。因為偶像沒有能力使敬拜它們的人得益處。但有人要說:他乃是奉一位神的名行這些美好的事!我們回答:當然如此;然而顯而易見,無人僅因自稱為神就是神。從這事又有何益處呢?沒有人知道有何益處可得。因為人若因任何工作而負了欠王的債;
1:37
and while he proceeds to pay it of his own accord, he should see idle men who are wont in certain places to set up one of themselves in the dignity of a king, that they may play before him; and being deceived, should go on and cast before them the money owed to the kingdom: will he not afterwards, at the command of the true king, be seized and bound, since whatever he gave to him who was king in name only, and not in reality, will not be reckoned to his account?
In like manner also he who, bringing his adorations and all things that are owed to the true God, casts them before those who are not gods, but were called by a name not properly theirs at the persuasion of demons — none of these things will be reckoned to his account when he enters into the judgement of God the Maker of all, who alone is God, to whom alone adoration is owed by all creatures. Whosoever therefore does not possess divine knowledge will lose all his joyful things, even though for a time they be found with him; and in this way all his labour will be without profit; and his works which were esteemed fair will be found by him without recompense; and so he will fall into the eternal punishment which awaited all the nations before the coming of Christ.
And it is evident that, although the people of Israel enjoyed kinship with God, to them also there came a great good in the coming of Christ our Lord. For they were raised up from a childish governance; they too were deemed worthy of the perfect knowledge of the Holy Trinity, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, who are acknowledged in unity. For they did not differ from him who calls the soul and the sun the same thing, being ignorant that, just as the latter has heat and brightness, so the former has mind and reason. If it is great joy to us when we wean an infant and bring him to perfect (solid) food, how much more worthy of exultation is it that the Israelites together with all the nations have attained to the perfect knowledge of the Holy Trinity?
1:40
In moribus insuper impudicis et in possessione terrestrium omnes aeque ita versabantur ut Deum quidem non cognoscerent, neque ab eo bona expectarent; quemadmodum infantulus attrahitur ubere tempore ablactationis, ita illi terrena appetebant. Dominus autem noster in Evangelio suo infixit rerum futurarum expectationem; tum vero spreverunt atque contemptui habuerunt res huius saeculi; quod quidem bonum est maximum, quando cultum Dei comitatur. Etenim homo rationalis qui correptus est amore harum divitiarum caducarum, similis est linguae et oculo in quibus quoddam amuletum suspenderetur ad eorum ornatum;
Moreover in shameless morals and in the possession of earthly things they all were so engaged that they did not indeed know God, nor expect good things from Him; just as an infant is drawn to the breast at the time of weaning, so they craved earthly things. But our Lord in His Gospel implanted the expectation of things to come; then indeed they despised and held in contempt the things of this age — which is the greatest good, when it accompanies the worship of God. For a rational man who is seized with love of these perishable riches is like the tongue and the eye on which some amulet were hung for their adornment;
再者,在無恥的品行上並在地上之物的擁有上,他們都是這樣地纏陷其中,以致他們確是不認識神,也不指望從祂得著美善;正如嬰孩在斷奶時被乳房所吸引,照樣他們貪戀地上之物。但我們的主在祂的福音裏栽植了對將來之事的期待;那時他們便輕看並藐視這今世之物——這乃是最大的美善,當它與敬拜神相伴隨的時候。因為一個有理性的人,若被對這些必朽財富的愛所攫住,便像舌頭和眼睛,其上掛著某種護身符為要裝飾它們;
1:41
which, since it was no adornment to them, moreover hinders the proper useful operation of each (of the eye and the tongue) and of the whole operation of the body. He is also like a boy to whom a fig, of little use to him, is more pleasant than gems, because he does not know their preciousness. To men, therefore, nothing is so good and useful as this: that they should know God with perfect knowledge, that they should be solicitous only for His precepts, and that they should overcome the attraction to visible things. For thus it will come to pass for them that God too will delight in them, and that the angels will be solicitous for them; they will possess love toward one another, and will become worthy of the felicity that does not pass away, which shall be in the new and indestructible world.
1:42
Si vero dantur homines qui hucusque non crediderunt in Christum aut qui crediderunt et non observant eius praecepta, non ex eius (sc. Christi) parte hoc fit; ex eius enim parte lux scientiae eius diffusa est ad omnes homines, et omnibus coena eius bonorum est parata. Illos itaque qui non credunt, vel qui credunt et non faciunt, accusat eodem modo ac illum qui stat infra solem et claudit oculos ne videat, et illum qui invitatus ad coenam proprios pedes impedit ne ambulet. CAPUT QUINTUM. Quam ob rem haec ipsa bona hucusque revelata non fuerint. Nunc vero pergamus tractare illud quaesitum;
But if there are men who until now have not believed in Christ, or who have believed and do not keep His precepts, this does not happen on His (Christ's) part; for on His part the light of His knowledge has been diffused to all men, and for all the banquet of His good things is prepared. Those, therefore, who do not believe, or who believe and do not act, He accuses in the same manner as one who stands beneath the sun and shuts his eyes so as not to see, and one who, invited to a banquet, hinders his own feet from walking. CHAPTER FIVE. For what reason these very good things were not revealed until now. But now let us go on to treat that question;
但若有人直到如今仍不信基督,或雖信卻不遵守祂的誡命,這並不是出於祂—基督—這一面;因為在祂這一面,祂知識的光已被傳遍給所有的人,並且祂美善的筵席已為眾人豫備了。所以,那些不信的,或信卻不行的,祂責備他們,正如責備一個站在日光底下卻閉上眼睛不看的人,並一個被邀赴筵席卻攔阻自己的腳不行走的人。第五章。這些美善何以直到如今才被啟示的緣由。如今讓我們進而討論那問題;
1:43
for what cause has the coming of Christ — which has been seen to have been so useful to all rational beings — not occurred until now? Was it then because God did not until now know of this (coming)? Or, if He had knowledge of it, was it because He did not have the power to accomplish it? Or if He had both, namely knowledge and power, did He, as one malicious, begrudge us the good things, and therefore put it off until now? For it is either through ignorance, or through impotence, or through malice, that one is hindered from doing good, when he himself is the cause of the delay.
But that God knew from the beginning that He would raise up our Lord Christ is evident from this: that concerning His coming, and concerning the good things which have been given to us through Him, He prophesied beforehand in His promises to the fathers, and through the prophets among the people of Israel. For just as we cannot suppose that God now is ignorant that He will raise us from the dead, from the fact that He has not yet made us rise again; likewise neither can we suppose that He was ignorant that He would manifest our Lord Christ, from the fact that from the beginning He did not in fact do this. But even though He did not in fact accomplish it, He nevertheless foretold concerning it, and types of it were represented among the ancients.
But let us ascend, if it please you, to the beginning of creation, and consider that if, not looking to the future, He had brought it (creation) into existence, He would not have created two heavens to govern the two worlds that were needful. But that He is not powerful — how is it possible to be conceived? For that we should be renewed after we have existed is not so difficult as to bring us into existence when we did not exist at all, since there was not anything from which He should both fashion us and give us subsistence. That He is good is known. For if He had been evil from of old, He would never have turned Himself to goodness, because God possesses all that is His own in immutability.
Is it not indeed that ineffable good, that when we could not of our own accord come into existence, He not only gave us existence, like stones and pieces of wood, but also raised us above the mute animals, and made us discerning and rational, and abundantly gave us power over all visible things? If, then, from the beginning He was good and knowing and powerful, nothing else indeed hindered Him from bringing to effect all our good things, save our own weakness, which could not receive all these things together without prior instruction; and when divine wisdom had seen this, His ineffable goodness governed us by that method which was useful to us.
For if any one of us has a son or a disciple whom he wishes to teach any art that he himself is skilled in, does he not lead him from small things to greater? If he wishes, for example, to instruct him for the clerical office, he first teaches him Aleph, Beth (that is, the separate letters), then a, b, c, d (that is, the letters joined together); then he sets before him words, that he may learn to pronounce syllable by syllable; and after these, the psalms, that he may learn to read by means of them as well; and when he has accomplished this, he teaches him to write a copy (of Holy Scripture), until he learns the text of the sacred Bible. And so after all these things, he hands over to him the volumes of interpretation to be read, that he may attain the sense of the divine books.
If he were to compel the disciple to expound the sense of sentences before he had learned to read, it is evident that, since the disciple would receive no profit, the teacher would seem to be out of his mind; because, when he has not laid the foundation, he strives to set on the roof.
If, then, we mortal and infirm men know how to administer our affairs in such orderly fashion, dealing with our sons and disciples not according to the force of our knowledge, but moderating our teaching among them so that they may be able to receive it, how much more did it befit the Lord of all, most wise and most good, in His administration to temper all things to our benefit and according to our strength, not acting according to His foreknowledge nor according to His power, but according to our own infirmity? And so let us contemplate that ineffable wisdom, how from the beginning it gradually advanced our nature to perfect knowledge, like a merciful father and teacher who descends to the understanding of his disciple.
And so those first generations which were from Adam until Noah, grace constituted in the first grade of the dispensation, after the manner of the first class of children, for whom is written Aleph, Beth, administering all those things which were apt to terrify them and at the same time to exhort them to withdraw from evils and to approach to the doing of good things. Just as we sometimes greatly trouble those children, that through all these things we may educate them to what is fitting, when from them we take occasion to deal with them now in this way, now in another:
So too God, our Creator, who has always shown forth His fatherly mercy toward our race in His boundless kindness, at times inflicted punishment upon sinners — as from the beginning upon Adam and Eve, and upon Cain who slew his own brother — so that, when the report of these things was handed down to later generations, they themselves might be terrified and held back from carrying out their crimes. This indeed we learn from Lamech, who, when he had killed a man unintentionally, was seized with great fear, weeping over himself; and with his wives standing by he lamented, inasmuch as he was about to receive from God that sevenfold punishment of Cain, because he had killed after he had come to know by how evil a judgment the slayer Cain had been delivered up.
Item quum corruptio paulatim profecisset in natura coram ipso, [Deus] venire fecit aquas diluvii super antiquos propter eorum impudicitiam atque nequitiam, eorumque opera mala.
At times also God, after the death of the just Abel, made his blood cry out from the earth, in order to show how great a care He has for those who fear Him — since, even after their death, He hears their voice and exacts vengeance upon their oppressors — so that by this He might stir up every man to strive to love and keep His commandments; as we see Enoch did, who was so justified that he was even made worthy to depart from men and to dwell among the living unto this very day. Again, when corruption had little by little advanced in nature before Him, God brought the waters of the flood upon the men of old because of their lewdness and wickedness and their evil deeds.
But He preserved Noah and those who were with him, and gave them laws which those who had lived before them had not been taught: namely, that they should eat whatever was living, as well as herbs, after they had poured out its blood, which in dumb animals holds the place of the soul; just as we too, after a child has learned Aleph, Beth, write joined letters and words, that he may learn to pronounce syllable by syllable. Again, after no small space of time, He chose Abraham the patriarch, and gave him the law of circumcision, and clear promises concerning his posterity — something indeed more excellent than what He had given to the sons of Noah.
1:54
Postquam posteri eius multa mala experti fuerant in terra Aegypti, illinc eduxit eos per varia gesta mirabilia eisque dedit varias leges scriptas; quemadmodum et nos quum filii et discipuli nostri iam didicerunt syllabatim enunciare, scribimus psalmos ut etiam discant eos legere; et deinde codicem ipsum tradimus eis scribendum. Postquam natum nostra sic pervenerat ad staturam perfectam, ut quis dicat, et exercitationem in illis primis disciplinis absolverat, tunc produxit adventum Christum, qui doceret scientiae perfectionem, et daret spem et expectationem bonorum futurorum;
After his descendants had endured many evils in the land of Egypt, He led them out from there through various wondrous deeds and gave them various written laws; just as we too, when our sons and disciples have already learned to pronounce syllable by syllable, write out psalms so that they may also learn to read them, and then hand them the codex itself to copy. And after our nature had thus arrived at full stature, so to speak, and had completed its training in those first lessons, then He brought forth the coming of Christ, who would teach the perfection of knowledge and give the hope and expectation of the good things to come;
在他的後裔於埃及地受了許多苦之後,祂藉著各樣奇異的作為將他們從那裡領出來,又賜給他們各樣寫成的律法;正如我們也是這樣:當我們的兒子和門徒已學會逐音節讀出之後,我們便寫出詩篇,叫他們也學會讀,隨後又把書卷本身交給他們抄寫。當我們的本性既已如此達到完全的身量(可以這樣說),並在那些初階功課上完成了操練,那時祂便帶來了基督的降臨,要教導知識的完全,並賜下對將來美善之事的盼望與期待;
1:55
quemadmodum quis, post illas disciplinas quas exposuimus, tradit filio suo libros interpretationis, ut legat, et intelligat sensum atque significationem illius quod praevie [pronuntiare et scribere] didicerat Non autem destitit facere erga omnes generationes ea ipsa quae fecerat erga antiquos, infligendo poenam in scelestos et peccatores; et familiares faciendo celebres atque nobiles, et rectam administrationem agendo, ob illam rationem quam praevie diximus. Quemadmodum, verbi gratia, si quis habeat decem discipulos in primo gradu instructionis [i. e.] Aleph, Beth, constitutos; et unus ex eis destiterit a studio et exierit ludere in sterquiliniis;
just as someone, after those lessons which we have set forth, hands to his son the books of interpretation, that he may read and understand the meaning and signification of that which he had previously learned to pronounce and to write. But He did not cease to do toward all generations the very things He had done toward the ancients, inflicting punishment upon the wicked and sinners, and making His own people renowned and noble, and exercising upright governance, for that reason which we have stated before. As, for example, if someone has ten disciples set in the first grade of instruction, namely Aleph, Beth; and one of them leaves off from study and goes out to play in the dunghills;
正如有人在我們所陳明的那些功課之後,把解釋的書卷交給他的兒子,叫他誦讀,並明白他先前已學會讀出和書寫之物的意義與所指。但祂並未停止向各世代施行祂從前向古人所行的同樣作為,就是降罰於惡人和罪人,又使屬祂的人成為著名尊貴的,並施行公正的治理,乃是為著我們先前所說的那緣故。譬如,若有人有十個門徒,安置在受教的第一級,即 Aleph、Beth;其中一個離開了學業,出去在糞堆裡玩耍;
1:56
and another begins to eat and drink, with no concern for his lesson; another reclines and falls asleep; while others fall to chatting in the idle talk of empty jests, caring nothing for what they are commanded to learn; but the rest learn as is fitting, holding nothing more important than to apply themselves to their instruction according to the will of their master — when the former are asked to recite, they will be punished, not because they have not learned to read and to understand the sense of the books, but because they have not recited Aleph, Beth, so to speak, as their more diligent fellow-pupils did.
1:57
Sic etiam Deus, Dominus omnium, quando veniet iudicare atque perscrutari opera hominum non quaeret ab Adamitis quare non circumcisi fuerunt, nec a Noachidis quare sabbatum non servaverunt; sed, ut dicam breviter, unumquamque generationem examinabit relate ad illa sua propria, cuique homini retribuens iuxta sua opera secundum tempus in quo existebat, et secundum leges quae a Deo in diebus suis datae fuerunt. Quemadmodum autem [constat quod] Deus non quaeret ab antiquis ea quae recentiorum sunt, quia [tunc temporis] non aderant; ita [etiam constat quod nec] naturae conveniebat manere in primo gradu [dispensationis] sine progressione;
So too God, the Lord of all, when He shall come to judge and to scrutinize the deeds of men, will not require of the sons of Adam why they were not circumcised, nor of the sons of Noah why they did not keep the Sabbath; but, to speak briefly, He will examine each generation in relation to what was proper to it, repaying every man according to his works, according to the time in which he existed, and according to the laws that were given by God in his days. And just as it is established that God will not require of the ancients the things that belong to those of later times, because in those days they were not present; so also it is established that it did not befit nature to remain in the first grade of the dispensation without progression;
萬有的主上帝也是如此:當祂來審判並查察人的行為時,祂不會向亞當的子孫追問他們為何沒有受割禮,也不會向挪亞的子孫追問他們為何沒有守安息日;而是,簡言之,祂要按各世代各自所合宜的來審查,照各人的行為報應各人,按他所存在的時代,並按上帝在他那些日子所賜的律法。正如顯然上帝不會向古人追討屬後世之人的事,因為那時候它們尚未存在;照樣顯然,本性也不宜停留在經綸的第一級而沒有進深;
1:58
just as it is of no help to a child to study only Aleph, Beth up to old age. To those ancients, then, it did no harm that the coming of Christ was not earlier, since the manner of life which Christ established will not be required of them. But it greatly helped us, because He turned us from error to God, and perfected us in complete knowledge, and sent before us the good things to come, as I have already said above. It appears that this coming took place very wisely at this time, because, if Christ had been manifested beforehand, the ancients could not have received Him; just as also one who has only now begun in the discipline of pronouncing syllables does not have knowledge sufficient to understand the sense of the books of interpretation.
1:59
But if anyone should say that God could have implanted all those branches of knowledge in us from the very beginning, without gradual training, he errs; because, while he wishes to free himself from labor, he casts himself down into the order of the irrational creatures, to which all that they possess belongs naturally, without exercise — as honey-making belongs to bees, and chastity to turtledoves. We say, indeed, that none of these kinds is worthy either of praise or of reproach, of good reward or of punishment. And this would likewise have come to pass with us, if without exercise we had received, already from our very creation, that life which lacks nothing; wherefore it was needful that we should first be inclined; it was necessary that he who learns by exercising should be led from small things to greater.
1:60
Sed ecce [dicet aliquis] ille creavit nos proclives [ad malum], et propter hanc causam peccavimus; cur igitur iudicat nos peccantes? Quis judicatur eo quod proclivis est? Absit, ne ullus quidem! Nam proclivitas et peccatum non sunt idem. Proclivitatem illud vocamus, quando quis unum facere eligit cum potest inclinari ad duo aequaliter;
But behold, someone will say: He created us inclined to evil, and for this cause we sinned; why then does He judge us as sinners? Who is judged for being inclinable? By no means, not anyone at all! For inclinability and sin are not the same thing. We call it inclinability when someone chooses to do the one thing, while he can be inclined equally toward two;
但是看哪,有人會說:祂造我們時就使我們傾向作惡,因這緣故我們才犯罪;那麼祂為何把我們當作罪人來審判呢?有誰因有傾向的可能就被定罪呢?斷乎不然,沒有一人!因為「可傾向」與「罪」並不是同一回事。我們所謂的「可傾向」,是指當一人能夠平等地傾向兩者之時,卻選擇去作其中之一;
1:61
but we reckon it as sin when someone — though he judges in his own understanding, or learns from the commandments of God, or even when he is able to judge and to know that something ought not to be done — nevertheless neglects and tramples upon his own understanding, and despises the divine commandments, and, for the sake of his temporary gain, or because of his evil will toward his neighbor, or for any other cause whatever, does that which he himself indeed understood, or could have understood, ought not to be done, and which to do is forbidden by the divine command.
God will judge no one because he is inclined toward what is unlawful, but because, when he could have restrained himself from doing what ought not to be done, he nevertheless committed it, and did not do, for whatever cause, what ought to have been done. But if anyone should say: had He not created us inclinable, we should not indeed have sinned! — we answer: but neither should we have been justified. For just as, if He had created you such that you could not please God, there would be no sin for you; in like manner, if He had so framed you that you could not sin, there would be no righteousness for you. But now, because you can look equally toward either as often as you wish, there is for you both sin and righteousness. Sin:
because, although you could have pleased God, as also the other men who throughout each generation pleased Him and did His will, you followed your own lusts, while what is just was no concern to you. Likewise righteousness: because, although you could have gained good things, you esteemed fairness and the worship of God above all things. Therefore for the former you will be reproached and will receive punishment; but for the latter you will be praised and held worthy of the enjoyment of good things. But if we call dumb animals, or creatures not endowed with senses, 'inclinable,' we so name them metaphorically, instead of saying that they are of a changeable nature. Of rational beings, however, inclinability is predicated in the manner I have spoken of above.
If then someone should say that God could have wrought both things in us — namely, to make us from the very beginning not inclinable, and to implant in us the knowledge of discerning all that is permitted, without experience in other things — this man assuredly does not know what he is saying, nor does he understand what he is demanding. For whatever we can imagine as existing, we find existing in one of these modes, and outside these modes nothing exists otherwise, nor can it exist. There exists God, the Maker of us all; there exist rational beings, who are all divided into two orders, of the visible and of the invisible; there exist all the dumb animals; and there exist creatures that are not living and not endowed with senses. But to God nothing like is given, nor will be given.
For how can a created being be like the Creator? — since it could not even give existence to itself; and how can a created being be without beginning? — since, behold, it came into existence at some time, and before it existed it did not exist. Or how is the nature of that thing not limited, whose time of existence is limited? For it behooves us to be unable to imagine any time, or any other extension whatsoever, before the existence of Him whose nature is constrained by nothing. But these things all belong to God alone: that He made all creatures exist when they did not exist, while He Himself exists essentially and from eternity, before all ages and times that can come into mind, and that His nature is uncircumscribed and infinite.
1:66
Item, ut ex his omnibus concludi potest, impossibile est illud intelligere, quod, nempe [ens creatus] aliquid sciat qum ab alio acceperit vel experientia didicerit et quod sit sicuti est omni tempore et quocumque momento quod in mentem venire potest qum experietur ullam mutationem qualicumque modo. Etenim [etiam] haec sunt Dei proprietates quas nulla creatum assequi potest. Ubi enim una harum invenitur, ipsa cohaerentia necessarie postulat ut omnes inveniantur. Itaque magna audacia est, et ad impudentiam Satanae pertinet id quod quis dicat: pulchrum esset si non proclives et mutabiles essemus, et ab initio omnes scientias distincte possedissemus. Hic scit quod ad gradum (Dei) surgere petit;
Likewise, as can be concluded from all these things, it is impossible to conceive that a created being should know anything unless it has received it from another or learned it by experience, and that it should be just as it is at all times and at every moment that can come into mind, without undergoing any change in any manner whatever. For these too are properties of God which no creature can attain. For where one of these is found, that very coherence necessarily requires that all of them be found. Therefore it is great audacity, and pertains to the shamelessness of Satan, when someone says: 'It would be fine if we were not inclinable and changeable, and possessed all branches of knowledge distinctly from the beginning.' This man knows that he is seeking to rise to the rank of God;
照樣,正如從這一切可以推斷出來的:要設想一個受造之物能知道甚麼而不是從別處領受或藉經歷學得,並且在凡能想到的一切時候、每一刻都正如它本是的那樣,毫不在任何方面經歷任何改變——這是不可能的。因為這些也都是上帝的屬性,沒有受造之物能企及。因為這些屬性中哪裡有一樣,那連貫性本身就必然要求它們全都同在。所以,當有人說:「我們若不可傾向、不可變,又從起初就清楚擁有一切知識,那該多好」——這是極大的狂妄,乃是出於撒但的無恥。這人知道自己是在尋求上升到上帝的地位;
1:67
et hoc meretur poenam quantam potest quis dicere; et, ut breviter dicamus, ille qui sic loquitur, meretur in nihilum reverti. Si itaque impossibile fuit nos in tali gradu constitui, numquid igitur postularemus fieri sicut lapides et ligna, et quatuor elementa atque similia, quae ad peccatum non inclinantur? Sed si de hoc interroges quemcumque vationalem, invenies [eum et alios] omnes pariter id recusantes; nullus vult fieri vel etiam sicut sol, qui scipsum non cognoscit etsi bene splendeat. Etenim ex eo quod, si velimus, multis modis ignem de eo accendamus, apertum est quod solis natum sit ignis; apertum est etiam ignem ex lapidibus exire;
and this deserves as great a punishment as one can name; and, to speak briefly, he who speaks thus deserves to be returned to nothing. If, then, it was impossible for us to be established in such a rank, should we therefore demand to become like stones and wood, and the four elements and the like, which are not inclined to sin? But if you ask this of any rational being whatsoever, you will find that he and all others alike refuse it; no one wishes to become even like the sun, which does not know itself, though it shine well. For from the fact that, if we will, we may in many ways kindle fire from it, it is plain that fire belongs to the sun's nature; it is plain also that fire comes forth from stones;
這也配得人所能說出的最大刑罰;而且,簡言之,如此說話的人配得歸於虛無。那麼,既然我們不可能被立在那等地位上,難道我們就該要求變成石頭木頭,並四種元素及類似之物,就是那些不傾向於犯罪的麼?但你若以此問任何有理性者,你必發現他和所有別人都一同拒絕;沒有人願意變成連太陽都不如的——太陽雖發光甚好,卻不認得自己。因為從這事,即我們若願意便能多方從太陽取火,可見火乃屬於太陽的本性;也可見火能從石頭出來;
1:68
but it is manifest that whatever is hidden in the midst of stones is not living nor endowed with senses, nor does any rational being desire to be such. And if not this, do we then ask to become like dumb animals, to which neither sin is imputed nor righteousness, whatever their manners may be? For we do not reproach the cock, however much he treads the hens; nor do we praise the turtledove because it mates only with one; nor do we say that the she-ass deserves punishment because she so often conceives offspring; nor do we call the mule blessed, which neither couples nor conceives at all. Thus neither do we say that the other species of dumb animals have sin or righteousness in their works. But we find that all rational beings refuse this latter state just as they refused the former.
And all these things were created for this reason: both that they might furnish us with knowledge and many uses, and also that through them we might learn of what blessedness the Creator of all has made us worthy, who did not create us like one of them; and that we might give thanks for His fatherly love toward our race. What follows from this? If it is impossible for us to become like God, and if we do not choose for ourselves to become like the kinds of beasts or like one of the creatures not endowed with senses, what remains for us, except to give thanks to God in word and in deeds, as far as we are able, because He thus honored and exalted us above all visible things, and also brought us up and made us partakers of His own as far as was fitting? But if anyone should say:
1:70
why did He not create us in the likeness of the angels? Behold, they too are inclinable, just as we are; for all the demons, and the devil, are indeed from those orders — and yet they sinned. But it was profitable for our instruction that we men should be composed out of the whole creation, of things visible and invisible; so that we might learn through our very selves, and the angels likewise through us, that there is one God, the Maker of all creatures visible and invisible. For unless it had been so done, it would seem to us that there are as many makers as there are species of natures.
But now, since the wise Maker has gathered together all the various species of creation in one living being, man the rational, it is plainly known that, although the natures be various and the creatures manifold, yet their maker is one — He who gathered them all together and bound them up in one man, who is composed of all these. But behold, someone will say, since we are inclinable, many sin; and for this cause they will be delivered into Gehenna for unceasing punishment. What profit is it that they were rational and endowed with understanding, since they are unworthy of the heavenly good things?
He who speaks thus ought to consider this, that those who sinned could have not sinned, after the manner of those others who pleased God, since they are of the same nature as they. Therefore, because they willingly held the divine commandments in contempt and despised them, they are justly deprived of heavenly happiness. Nevertheless it is far higher and more excellent to be someone in Gehenna than not to be a rational and discerning being. If my word is not believed, let us see from the facts, and let us question the blind man, who neither sees nor delights in the splendid light of the perceptible sun. Let us see what he would choose for himself: to remain as he is, or to become an ass that has large eyes and sees excellently.
But, you will say, he is blind, and his defect is not so very evil. Be it so; yet who in this world is more abased than the leper? Even so, if you question him, you will find him asking to remain in his pains, rather than to be transformed into a camel, for example, or into anything else of the kind. In like manner those who go into Gehenna and fall into diverse punishments because of their hateful deeds, give thanks unceasingly to the kindness of their benefactor, that He did not turn them into nothing, as they deserved, nor make them after the manner of dumb animals, nor after the manner of creatures not endowed with senses.
As for the fact that they are deprived of ascending to heaven and being numbered with the just, this they impute to their own works, conscious that they have no excuse; so that for this they unceasingly praise the divine justice. But with regard to what I said above — namely, that where there is knowledge of every thing without any experience, and stability in the same without any change in any way whatever, all these things must necessarily belong to God — someone perhaps will think this to be false, on the very ground that we believe all rational beings will receive perfect knowledge after the resurrection from the dead, and will remain forever unchangeable. How greatly this differs from that is plain to those who hear with understanding.
CAPUT SEXTUM. Opus fuit sumere aliquem mediatorem per quem acciperemus a Deo illa bona magna. Ostendamus exinde quod impossibile fuit accipere illa bona eaque possidere sine alicuius mediatione.
For I said that knowledge of every thing without any experience, and stability in the same at whatever time can come into mind, is never found among us; but, behold, long since in this world we have had experience in many things, and have been changed by changes not at all small. In this, therefore, we are not like God. O our venerable brother, however insufficient one may call this treatise, yet if he consider it diligently, he will be able to know that I have said, however briefly, all the things that pertain to this chapter. CHAPTER SIX. It was needful to take some mediator through whom we might receive from God those great good things. Let us therefore show that it was impossible to receive those good things and to possess them without someone's mediation.
For just as, if they had been revealed from the beginning, we should have gained none of them, since we could not have known them because of our childhood and these causes which we have mentioned; in like manner, if at this time God, the Lord of all, had not in His wisdom made use of someone's mediation, the possession of them would not have come to us. For if God had been visible, it would have sufficed for our instruction to have seen Him. But now, because He is not visible, it is impossible for us to learn about Him without someone's mediation. Although it is said by the prophets that they saw the Lord, yet it is plain that they did not see His nature. For 'grace and truth came through Jesus Christ,' says John. Why did he say 'grace and truth'?
1:77
Quia Deum nemo vidit unquam.
Because 'no one has ever seen God.' He who dwells in resplendent light, 'whom no one of men has seen, nor can see.' By these words holy Paul teaches us that the ancients never saw God, nor do those of the last days see Him — neither men, that is, nor the invisible powers. Everything that is visible is seen either in part or in whole. The earth we have seen in part, and the heaven and the sea; and although we have seen only a part of each, because our vision is not sufficient to comprehend the four regions, we say, 'we see heaven and earth and sea.' But in whole we see all small things, as, for example, stones and trees and the like, because of their smallness.
And yet it is impossible for us to see God in part, after the manner of earth and heaven, because He is not composite, and is not constituted of parts. Nor again does He fall under vision after the manner of small things; because He is infinite and at the same time uncircumscribed. And if we should ask to see Him as He is, we should only be desiring our own destruction. For who is there that drops a little wax into a furnace of fire and will find it again? Or who is there that casts a handful of dust into the great sea, and will be able to know what has become of it?
And if among these things, although they are all created, there are some that devour and destroy one another if they come near, or if the one falls into the other, much more should we be consumed — and indeed more quickly than wax melts in fire or a handful of dust vanishes in many waters — if our vision should even fall upon God, the Maker of all, who is infinite in His Deity and unspeakable in His glory. For just as, by reason of its breadth and extent, the abyss of the great sea is unexplorable, and no one can cross over it without the help of a ship or a small boat — so neither can any man . . . . . . . . . . . . . . without the help of someone through whom he may be directed to the knowledge of the Invisible.
For if, although the soul is created and limited, yet because we do not see it we cannot know its will, nor indeed its very existence, so long as it does not work through some one of the members of the body — how much less could we receive teaching, or learn the will, of Him who is the Maker of all and incomprehensible, without His revelation made through one of His creatures. Rightly therefore did God, who wills our good according to the abounding riches of His grace, not make His revelation to us without someone's mediation, but took from us a perfect man for His revelation to us, and taught us through him perfect knowledge of His nature and of His will, and promised us heavenly good things that do not pass away.
1:81
CAPUT SEPTIMUM. Propter quas causas Dominus noster Deus nihil aliud pro sua revelatione hoc tempore sumpserit, nisi hominem ex nobis. Has igitur causas dicamus ob quas hoc tempore opus fuerit homine ex nobis ad revelationem divinam. Quaeritur enim, quare Deus nobis per hominem perfectum de genere nostro sumptum, et non quemadmodum patribus antiquis, per ignem, vel per nubem, vel per aliquam e creationis partibus, suam fecerit revelationem? Dicimus ergo: nobis per aliquam harum partium hoc tempore non fecit Deus suam revelationem, propter hanc ipsam causam quod iam per eas patribus nostris revelatus fuerat. Quemadmodum enim ab initio Deus totam creationem per singulas partes condidit;
CHAPTER SEVEN. For what causes our Lord God took nothing else for His revelation at this time except a man from among us. Let us therefore state these causes for which at this time a man from among us was needful for the divine revelation. For the question is asked: why did God make His revelation to us through a perfect man taken from our own race, and not, as to the ancient fathers, through fire, or through a cloud, or through some one of the parts of creation? We say, then: God did not make His revelation to us at this time through any of these parts, for this very cause, that He had already been revealed through them to our fathers. For just as from the beginning God founded the whole creation part by part;
第七章。我們的主上帝在此時為著祂的啟示,除了從我們中間取一個人之外,沒有取別物,是為著甚麼緣故。所以讓我們述說在此時需要從我們中間取一個人來成就神聖啟示的這些緣故。因為有人問:上帝為何藉著從我們本族所取的一個完全的人向我們施行啟示,而不像對古時的列祖那樣,藉著火、或藉著雲、或藉著受造之物的某一部分呢?我們便回答說:上帝在此時不藉著這些部分的任何一個向我們施行啟示,正是為這緣故,就是祂已經藉著它們向我們的列祖顯現過了。因為正如上帝起初一部分一部分地創立了全部受造之物;
1:82
and then at last, when nothing was lacking, gathered it into one man, after whom He created nothing new: in like manner also now, after He had been made known part by part to our fathers in the first generations, He gathered, in these last times, all the parts of all His revelations into this man whom He took from among us; after whom He will be revealed in no other, inasmuch as in Him all former things were consummated; and He Himself will remain forever, indissolubly. For when He willed to make a partial redemption, and sought to teach a doctrine suited to children, and willed to relieve a temporary need, He duly completed His revelation to the beginners through some part of creation.
1:83
Nunc vero quia redemptionem perfectam quae prodesset universae creationi, proferre voluit, et doctrinam omnino perfectam docere placuit ei, recte vinculum totius creationis sumpsit hominem corpore et anima perfectum, et in quo omnes creaturae visibiles et invisibiles continentur. Iterum propterea quod Adam homo primus, pater omnium hominum, ab initio suae formationis auscultavit diabolum et transgressus est mandatum divinum, et a Deo mortis iudicio damnatus est, quod scilicet ut debitum quoddam sese extendit et transmissum fuit in omnes eius posteros;
But now, because He willed to bring forth a perfect redemption that would profit the whole creation, and it pleased Him to teach a wholly perfect doctrine, He rightly took, as the bond of the whole creation, a man perfect in body and soul, and in whom all creatures visible and invisible are contained. Again, because Adam the first man, the father of all men, from the beginning of his formation hearkened to the devil and transgressed the divine command, and was condemned by God to the judgment of death — which, as a kind of debt, extended itself and was transmitted to all his posterity;
但如今,因祂願意帶出一個有益於全部受造之物的完全救贖,又喜悅教導一個全然完備的道理,祂便取了一個身體與魂俱全的人,作為全部受造之物的聯結,並使一切可見與不可見的受造之物都包含在祂裡面,這乃是合宜的。再者,因頭一個人亞當——眾人之父——從他被造之初便聽從魔鬼,違背了神聖的命令,被上帝定了死亡的審判,這審判如同一種債務,延展開來,傳給了他所有的後裔;
1:84
and because these men more strongly confirmed upon themselves the judgment of death, through their diverse inventions of idolatries and of manifold sins, by despising love toward their neighbors, and holding in contempt the honor due to parents, and even neglecting the observances of the law of Moses — for all these things it was needful that there should arise a man partaking of the same nature, their brother, of the lineage of Adam the first man; who, being altogether just and without spot in all his manners, might take away from us the judgment of death, and loose and abolish sin, and rescue us from the servitude of Satan and of the demons, and free us from the curse of the law of Moses, and promise us immortal life in the resurrection from the dead.
For just as through a man came death, so also through a man comes the reviving of the dead. And as in Adam all men die, so also in Christ all are made alive. And as through the disobedience of one man many became sinners, so also through the obedience of one man many are made just. For just as when someone is burdened with some debt, if he cannot pay it, his goods are taken away from him, and even his children are handed over into servitude; but if there arise someone of his lineage who, by reason of his prosperity, can pay his father's debts, he will recover his goods, and will free all his brethren from the oppression of debt and of servitude:
so also, after Adam had become a debtor by hearkening to the devil, and had been delivered up to death — he and all his offspring after him — God took the man Jesus, the second Adam, from our own race, and by His grace made Him without stain; and He caused Him to die — even though He was not a debtor, since He did not sin — so that by His innocence our debt might be discharged; and that we might live through the death of Him who was not subject to sin — we, I say, who, because of sin, had received the judgment of death. For if God had been crucified and had died, as the heretics say, this would have been of no profit to us; but He would have redeemed His own fellow gods. —
For if God be mortal, it is plain that there are also many gods like Him. — But the true God partakes of none of the passions of creatures. But if anyone should say that it is of the most excellent mercy that He Himself should die that we might be redeemed — as if someone were a debtor and another should pay the debt for those who have been delivered into servitude, and free them — behold, this is what the Man of our Lord did, since, while He alone was just and without stain, He promised immortal life to all men who partake of His nature. But it would have been easy for God, had it seemed useful to Him, even without taking a man from us, by His mere nod to bring immortal life to us all.
1:88
Hoc vero non fecit, ne existimaretur nefariorum amator, eo quod dum in peccatis eramus redemisset nos sine mediatione hominis ex nobis qui iustus esset. Nunc vero eo quod [hominem] ex nobis sumpsit, et tum demum nos a morte et a peccato liberavit, manifestavit suam iustitiam; et terruit nos quominus patraremus nefaria et mala morti tradens illum qui debitor non fuit, et sic nos redimens. Insuper eo quod satis habuit unum tantum pro toto genere nostro [mori], manifestavit suam misericordiam ineffabilem;
But this He did not do, lest He should be thought a lover of the wicked, in that, while we were yet in sins, He should have redeemed us without the mediation of a man from among us who was just. But now, because He took a man from us, and only then freed us from death and from sin, He manifested His justice; and He terrified us from committing wicked and evil things, by delivering to death Him who was not a debtor, and thus redeeming us. Moreover, in that He was content that one only should die for our whole race, He manifested His unspeakable mercy;
但這事祂沒有作,免得被人以為祂是愛惡人者,因若在我們還在罪中時,祂就不藉著一個從我們中間出來、且是公義的人為中保而救贖了我們。但如今,因祂從我們中間取了一個人,且要到那時才把我們從死和罪中釋放出來,祂便顯明了祂的公義;又把那不是欠債者交付於死,這樣救贖了我們,藉此使我們戰兢,免得去犯邪惡兇惡之事。並且,因祂只以一位為我們全族而死為滿足,祂便顯明了祂說不盡的憐憫;
1:89
for since each one of us ought to be without stain, and only then to possess eternal life, He promised this to us through one only who was just, lest He should weaken or altogether shut off the hope of our being changed unto virtue. These reasons, however, are brought forward according to the modes of the divine economy. For it is plain that from the beginning it pleased God first to make our nature passible and mortal; and then at last, after the discipline and training of our rationality in this world, to make us partakers of immortal and unchangeable life.
1:90
Ut ex omnibus rebus nostris utilitatem nobis concederet, ostendit mortem quae in Adami natum inde ab eius creatione imposita fuit, cum nos scilicet per peccatum devicit, ut omnes timeamus et terreamur quominus transgrediamur praecepta Dei; Si tantam iniuriam faciebat inobedientia, ut hominis compositionem dissolveret, et separaret eius animam ab eius corpore. Vitam quidem illam immortalem quam sibi ante constitutionem mundi nobis tempore opportuno largiri proposuerat, per hominem Iesum Christum protulit, quemadmodum dixit Paulus Apostolus: Unus est mediator Dei et hominum ;
That He might grant us profit from all our circumstances, He showed forth the death which was imposed upon Adam's nature from his very creation — that is, when He overcame us through sin — so that we might all fear and be terrified away from transgressing the commandments of God; if disobedience wrought so great an injury as to dissolve the composition of man, and to separate his soul from his body. But that immortal life, which before the foundation of the world He had purposed to bestow upon us at the fitting time, He brought forth through the man Jesus Christ, as Paul the Apostle said: 'There is one mediator of God and of men.'
that He might rouse and exhort us all together to love and to be zealous for righteousness, which has such power that, when it is found in but a single man, it gives life to countless multitudes. This, then, was the divine will before all ages; and indeed the plan of His economy has profited us in many ways, as I have said. And if anyone will consider it, and if he learns the sense of the Scriptures, he will pronounce just those reasons which we have now set forth: it was truly necessary, above all else, to take to Himself the Man of our Lord.
1:92
Quia hoc tempore quo natum nostra, ut dixi, pervenit ad staturam perfectam, ut quis dicat, opus fuit nobis recipere doctrinam perfectam de Deo qui cognoscitur in tribus personis Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti, paribus in natura, sine initio et sine fine; quod quidem per quamdam partem creationis rationalibus revelari non potuit. Hoc apertum est ex eo quod quotiescumque in his similibus Deus illis antiquis revelabatur, non sciverunt discere illam divinitatis naturam gloriosam quae in tribus personis cognoscitur, et superat omnem compositionem et omnem finem atque limitationem localem. Nonnulli quidem putabant eius habitaculum esse in paradiso;
Because at this time, when our nature, as I have said, had come to its perfect stature, so that one may say it was needful for us to receive the perfect doctrine concerning God, who is known in three persons, of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, equal in nature, without beginning and without end; which indeed could not be revealed to rational beings through any single part of creation. This is plain from the fact that, as often as God was revealed to those men of old in such likenesses, they did not know how to learn that glorious nature of the Godhead which is known in three persons, and which surpasses every composition and every limit and every local boundary. Some indeed supposed His dwelling to be in paradise;
因為在這時候,正如我所說的,當我們的本性已達到完全的身量,可以說,我們需要領受關於神的完全教訓——這神乃是在父、子、聖靈三位中被認識的,三位在本質上同等,無始無終;這事實在無法藉著受造之物的某一部分向理性的受造者啟示出來。這從以下事實顯而易見:每當神在這類相似的形象中向古時的人顯現時,他們都不知道如何認識那在三位中被認識的、超越一切組合、一切界限、一切地域局限的、榮耀的神性本質。有些人以為祂的居所是在樂園裏;
1:93
others, however, supposed that His dwelling was enclosed only within the bounds of the heavens; and some thought that the economy of His operation was confined within the limits of Jerusalem, since they knew not the distinction of the persons of the Godhead. But we, through the Man (taken) from us, have now learned that the Spirit is God, and that He dwells equally in every place that can come to mind, and can equally operate; the whole world is sustained by Him, and is in Him as a grain of sand in the hand of one of us, and beyond what can be told. And we have learned that ineffable Being exists in a threefold way in persons.
For from the fact that He was named Christ, we have come to know the Father who anointed Him, and the Holy Spirit who, in place of oil, filled Him, namely Jesus of Nazareth, this one whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power; and again: 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, therefore He hath anointed me'—our Lord Himself said this concerning Himself. Again, from the fact that He was named Son, we understand the eternal Son who is with His Father; just as from this bread which is called the body of Christ, we are lifted up to that body which is in heaven. It was impossible that one of these parts of creation, through which He was revealed to the ancients—such as fire, and the cloud, and the stones, and the wood of the temple, and the ark, and the golden plate—should be called by the name of the Son.
Ei quidem congruunt verba his similia.
But that the Man of our Lord should be called the Son of God did not seem a new thing; for many were so named, as in that passage: 'I have begotten sons and exalted them'; and 'I said, ye are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High.' And when they drew near to Him and saw His works which surpassed nature, and heard His words when He said: 'I and my Father are one'; and, 'He who sees me sees the Father also,' they recognized that hidden in Him was the eternal Son who is from the Father, who through Him did these things. To Him indeed such words as these are fitting.
1:96
Quemadmodum enim si manu annuas, et capite innuas, vel oculo nictes, anima, quae in corpore celatur et non videtur, ex parte tantum sese revelat, item si quis eat, vel veniat, vel surgat, vel sedeat, vel aliud huiusmodi [faciat]; omnia vero sua desideria et cogitationum suarum notiones per linguam solam docet atque manifestat; simili modo cum per unam harum partium Deus invisibilis antiquis revelabatur, scientiam partialem eos docebat iuxta necessitatem quam exigebat eorum pueritia. Nunc vero cum perfectnm ex nobis hominem acceperit, omnia sua desideria nos per eum docuit, et nobis perfecte naturam suam manifestavit, in quantum possibile est;
For just as, if you beckon with your hand, or nod with your head, or wink with your eye, the soul, which is hidden in the body and is not seen, reveals itself only in part; likewise if one walks, or comes, or rises, or sits, or does any other such thing; but all its desires and the notions of its thoughts it teaches and makes manifest through the tongue alone; in like manner, when the invisible God was revealed to the ancients through one of these parts, He taught them partial knowledge according to the need that their infancy required. But now that He has taken from us a perfect Man, He has taught us all His desires through Him, and has manifested His nature to us perfectly, insofar as is possible;
因為正如你若用手示意,用頭點頭,或用眼睛眨眼,那藏在身體裏、不被看見的魂,只是部分地顯露自己;同樣,人若行走、或來、或起、或坐、或作其他這類的事,也是如此;但魂一切的願望和思想的意念,卻單單藉著舌頭來教導並彰顯;照樣,當那不可見的神藉這些部分中的一個向古人顯現時,祂便照著他們幼稚所要求的需要,教導他們部分的知識。但如今,祂既從我們中間取得一個完全的人,就藉著祂將祂一切的願望都教導了我們,並儘可能完全地向我們彰顯了祂的本性;
1:97
just as the soul, which reveals and clearly manifests all its notions through the tongue. Therefore for this reason also the taking of a man from us was necessary. Furthermore, since resurrection from the dead had been promised, and the promise of ascension to the heavens had been made—yet they had not been illustrated by examples—we could not have been certain that even one of these would be accomplished in us, unless we had seen a man from among us, of our same nature, like ourselves, die, rise again, and himself first ascend to the heavens.
But when these things first happened to one like ourselves, we believed that it was now not difficult for them to be brought to pass in us also, since we are of the same nature with Him who in actual fact has already received these very things—I mean the resurrection from the dead, and the ascension of the righteous to the heavens. Again, since through Him God is to judge all men, as the Apostle says: 'When God shall judge the secrets of men according to my Gospel through Jesus Christ'; the righteous will feel more keenly the delights of good things, and the wicked the punishment which they shall receive, when from a visible one, just as they themselves are, they shall receive the recompense of all their works.
Finally, after the resurrection from the dead and the ascension of the righteous to the heavens, they will not build buildings of hewn stones and timbers and cedars and gems, that in them they may worship God as in this world; but He Himself will be for them as a temple, in which they will unceasingly worship the Holy Trinity, showing their love toward God, and in Him, as in a rational temple, offering to God the worship due to Him, and glory, and thanksgiving; and in Him they will possess consolation and tranquility; and their mind, which longs to see God, will be as in a quiet harbor, when they see Him as such, and are lifted up by Him to that Invisible One, as from an image to its prototype; for He is the image of the invisible God.
For when someone dear to us departs from us, if we gaze upon his image with great delight, how much more will the righteous be consoled and rejoice, and the flame of love of their mind, which ardently longs to see God, their Creator and the cause of all their good things, will receive sure faith in this rational image which is clothed with divine glory, and is higher than all, and has power over all creatures, since in Him they will in a certain manner see Him who is invisible to them, and through Him they will know Him who is hidden by His own essence, and will receive a sure faith concerning Him! O our illustrious brother, all these causes demanded the assumption of a man from among us:

the gathering and perfection of all former things, and the redemption of all creatures visible and invisible, the cessation of all the troubles which appeared through Adam the first man and reigned over our nature, the condemnation of Satan, who receives the wages of his works, and that through Him the righteous may show their love toward God; and that through Him they may receive sure faith in the invisibility of their Creator and Benefactor. CHAPTER EIGHT. That our Lord Christ was not a mere man (Psilos anthropos).
1:102
) We shall therefore resolve the doubt of many who, hearing from us what we have related of the properties of the humanity of our Lord, and the causes for which it was assumed, come up to us saying: 'Was He then a mere man, and could He alone redeem us, according to your word?' This indeed they say unjustly and ignorantly; for if they had attended diligently to the things that were said, they would have understood what we said: that in Him God the Word is revealed, with His Father and the Holy Spirit; and that in Him, as in a rational temple, He is unceasingly worshipped; again, that in Him, as in an image, He presents Himself to be seen by all His righteous ones: which do not permit our Lord to be reckoned a mere man.
These things indeed, when they are spoken, suffice alone to show His greatness, and the difference between Him and all creatures. Nay rather, we shall tell of other causes which show that God was in that man who was assumed from us. We have said above that necessity demanded that our Lord be declared perfectly righteous, and in all things without blemish: in thoughts, and words, and works; and He afforded Him help according to the excellence of His will. He was indeed justified by the Spirit. And because He fulfilled the Mosaic law, it was necessary that its course be abolished, as something long since completed.
Therefore it was also needful that God should be in Him, since indeed it belonged to Him alone to abolish the law, as the One who gave it from the beginning. Moreover, after the law had ceased from its course, and the institution of the New Testament had taken its beginning, it was necessary that those who, through faith in Him, had been made members of God's household, should receive the grace of the Holy Spirit, the adoption as sons. Wherefore we also say that God dwelt in Him, because He alone can give the grace of the Spirit. But it was also impossible for that Man of our Lord to rise from the dead and ascend to the heavens, unless God were in Him. For He alone could accomplish the loosing of death.
1:105
Denique, sed nec possibile fuit nos accipere vitam novam, nec iustos ad altitudines sublimes elevari, si homo simplex fuisset Dominus noster Christus. Propter haec omnia igitur, necesse fuit Deum inesse in illo homine qui ex semine David sumptus fuit, sicut et propter priora quae diximus. * * * * *. CAPUT NONUM. Quam ob rem homo Domini nostri non fuerit sumptus ex terra, sed ex virgine sine coitu viri. Postquam visum fuit quod hodie congregamur propter bona quo nobis per Christum Dominum nostrum data sunt; cognitum etiam quaenam sint illa bona; et manifestatum est, in sapientia magna ad nostram utilitatem illud administratum fuisse, quod antea revelatio facta non fuerit;
Finally, neither was it possible for us to receive new life, nor for the righteous to be raised to sublime heights, if our Lord Christ had been a mere man. For all these reasons, therefore, it was necessary that God should be in that man who was taken from the seed of David, just as also for the former reasons which we have stated. CHAPTER NINE. Why the Man of our Lord was not taken from the earth, but from a virgin without the intercourse of a man. After it has been seen that we are gathered together today on account of the good things given to us through Christ our Lord; and it has also been recognized what those good things are; and it has been made manifest that this was administered in great wisdom for our benefit, that the revelation was not made before;
最後,倘若我們的主基督是單純的人,我們便不可能領受新生命,義人也不可能被提升到崇高的境界。所以為這一切緣故,必需神在那從大衛後裔取來的人裏面,正如我們所陳明在先的那些緣由一樣。第九章。論為何我們主的那人不是從地取來,乃是從一位童女、不藉男人交合而取來。我們既已看見今天聚集是因著那藉我們主基督賜給我們的美善之事;又既已認識那些美善之事是甚麼;並既已顯明這事是以極大的智慧為我們的益處而施行的,就是那啟示先前未曾作成;
1:106
and it has been seen that there was also need of the mediation of someone by whose aid these good things might come to us, and that this mediator ought to be nothing other than a man—not indeed a mere man, but a man in whom there was God, the Lord and Almighty of all—we shall tell henceforth why God did not take the Man of our Lord from the earth, as He did the first Adam; and why He was born of a woman without the intercourse of a man. When we have shown this, we shall come to that point: why did God ordain that His conception should take place in the springtime? And what do we understand from this: that He was born at this time? We shall add to that discussion a brief exhortation, which we shall give as the conclusion of the whole discussion, just as we said from the beginning.
1:107
From the beginning of our creation, we have been provokers and transgressors of the divine precepts, and despisers of the election of our power of discernment, because of our hatred toward our fellows. In short, throughout all generations we have so appeared as God's adversaries by our words and our works, that even if we had been reduced to nothing, this would deservedly have befallen us—save a few who, through individual generations, were found righteous among us, like pearls in the sand.
But if God had assumed the Man of our Lord from the earth, as He did the first Adam, we should all have been seized by despair and should have thought that God had repudiated our race because of our offenses, and that no hope remained for us; and so it pleased God, whose mercy is immense and whose fatherly kindness toward our race was from the beginning, to take Him not from the earth but born of our own nature, that He might teach us that the immortal and unfailing and incorruptible life, which our Lord assumed in His resurrection from the dead, has been transmitted to our whole race, and that we all together are partakers of it, because He is of the same nature as we, and not alien to us.
For just as, because we are of the same nature as the first Adam, whatever troubles he first received were transmitted and extended to us all: so, because our Lord is of the same nature as we, and He Himself is the initiator of future good things, just as Adam was of present troubles, we believe and hope that we all shall be partakers of the immortal and unfailing life with our Lord Christ, just as with the first Adam we were partakers of this life which is full of all sorrows. For just as through Adam we all died, so through Christ we all shall live, like the first Adam, or from any other part that one can conceive.
For it is plain that, although He was formed without intercourse and was born of the Virgin Mary, He nevertheless partakes of the whole nature of men and women, and a part of both was in Him, since the Blessed Mary, after the likeness of all women, was made from man and from woman; and if she who bore Him was constituted from both orders, of men and of women, it is necessary that there be in Him a part of both, inasmuch as He was born of her who was constituted from both. He therefore is called by the Scriptures the son of David and of Abraham, since from their seed the Blessed Mary was begotten, of whom He Himself was born.
Therefore the good things which came through Him have been handed over to all men, men and women alike, because, as I have said, they naturally belong to all. But that He was formed of the Holy Spirit without the intercourse of a man—this was so that He might be known to be the inaugurator of the new economy and of the age to come, after the likeness of Adam, who was formed from the earth, without intercourse, and was the head and father of this world. He who was to be the head and inaugurator in the economy of mortal life was rightly made from earth that was not living; but this One, who was the inaugurator and revealer of this world of immortal life, was taken from living earth, the Virgin Mary, without the intercourse of a man.
The very novelty that His formation was without seed is sufficient to proclaim that He is the inaugurator of the new economy which gives the resurrection of the dead, which comes to pass through the power of the Spirit, who did not lack the power of forming Him from a virgin, without seed, above the order of nature. CHAPTER TEN. For what cause God ordained that He should be conceived in the springtime. But that God ordained that He should be conceived in the springtime—this was because at this time also God had made the whole creation: for the identity of the time taught that the same One who created from the beginning is also the One who now renews through Him who was conceived, and who henceforth, at this time, is to be born according to the order of nature which God established from the beginning.
This we say from the agreement and likeness of the divine works. For just as, at this time, the day, the time of light, decreases and is diminished down to nine hours, while the night, the dominion of darkness, becomes longer and reaches fifteen hours; and then the day, the kingdom of light, begins to take hours from the night, the dominion of darkness; again, just as no fruits, whether of grain or of trees, are now among us—for the grains scarcely begin to grow, and the leaves of all the trees fall—in like manner both are seen among men at the coming of our Lord Christ; for the light of the knowledge of the truth dispels this darkness from our souls.
The darkness of the error of the worship of idols held our thoughts captive, when we were stripped and despoiled even of all the fruits of the works of righteousness. But our Lord and our Redeemer, Christ, came, and when He saw us erring in our mind, He drove away from us the darkness of the worship of idols, and led us to the perfect knowledge of the Holy Trinity, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; He also gave us the grace of the Spirit, through which we might grow and bring forth the fruits of righteousness acceptable to God the Creator. But the heathen also, worshippers of the elements, celebrate today everywhere every year a great festival, namely for this reason: because the sun begins to prevail, and its kingdom to extend itself more.
1:115
But they ought to have considered that, if it is altogether worthy of joy and festival that the day begins to take from the night, then by the same reasoning that which afterward begins—namely that the night, the kingdom of darkness, begins to take from the day, the dominion of the sun—would be worthy of the same festivals. For just as, when the night is prolonged, unless it were again diminished, the manner of human life would perish; likewise also the day, when it begins to grow longer, unless it were again diminished, there would be no preservation for this world, because without summer and winter, heat and cold, our manner of life here cannot subsist; for it is impossible, without the ascent and descent of the sun, the lengthening and shortening of night and day, that those seasons should exist.
Therefore the benefit which is ours when the sun prevails is exactly the same as ours when it decreases. The erring heathen ought therefore to celebrate a festival either at both changes or at neither; because equal gain comes from both, that is, from God who so ordained them. CHAPTER ELEVEN. Exhortation to an honorable life. They, then, celebrated a festival, as I have said, namely of the sun which at this time begins to prevail over the dominion of darkness, and which again will decrease. But the holy Church celebrates the festival of the nativity of Christ, the Sun of righteousness, who has begun to prevail over error and Satan, and will never decrease; whose dominion, on the contrary, extends itself until all rational beings, visible and invisible, are subjected to His dominion.
To Him indeed every knee shall bow, of things heavenly, earthly, and of those who are under the earth. Therefore, just as our festivals are greater and more powerful than those of the pagans and of all religions—for true knowledge is found among us alone—so our morals, which are founded on the worship of God, ought to be more honorable and purer than those of other men, while we are equally zealous about both: the reading of the Scriptures and their interpretation, as well as the teaching concerning the festivals and their causes; and also about an excellent life acceptable to Christ our Lord.
Let us have care for our fellows and our brethren more than for ourselves, if we are at all disciples of the Apostles, who were imitators of their Lord. For behold, they were all anxious for our benefit, and labored day and night, in summer and in winter, on sea and on land, by all ways and means, that we all might be brought to kinship with our Lord Christ, and that we might find the good things which are prepared in heaven for those who rightly believe and rightly live. They strove against all evils, and gave themselves up to death for us, because our life in Christ was dearer to them than their own life in this world. What do I say, in this world?
When one of them chose to be alienated from future good things for the sake of all his brethren, that they might become partakers of the good things of Christ; for he says: 'I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren and my kinsmen according to the flesh, who are the children of Israel.' If, then, the blessed Paul sought in prayer his own loss and almost his perdition for the common benefit, how are we not ashamed and abashed, and do we not fall into great fear and trembling, to call ourselves their disciples, when we do not imitate their life and their perfect wills? Let us therefore become like the Apostles, the teachers, in every respect, insofar as is possible, that with them we may be partakers of the heavenly good things.
1:120
Quantumvis enim meditemur in eorum doctrinam et confiteamur eorum fidem, si eorum mores non habeamus, non perveniemus ad locum quo ipsi vadunt; sed fiemus sicut caeci super quos se extendunt radii solis, nec tamen delectantur in eorum fulgore, quia eis desunt organa ad eorum actionem recipiendam. Revera enim manifestatio fidei rectae et confirmatio disciplinae perfectae vita est honesta, sine * * * ******* nec doctrina nostra credibilis fiet iis qui extra ecclesiam sunt, nec nos, qui intus sumus, videbimur hanc, intuitu religionis Dei, tradere. Solliciti ergo simus de moribus deque amore erga invicem; et [caveamus] ne simus causa malorum nobismetipsis, et scandalum omnibus qui nos vident;
For however much we meditate on their doctrine and confess their faith, if we do not have their morals, we shall not reach the place to which they themselves go; but we shall become like the blind upon whom the rays of the sun extend, yet they are not delighted in their brightness, because they lack the organs to receive their action. For truly the manifestation of right faith and the confirmation of perfect discipline is an honorable life; and without it, neither will our doctrine become credible to those who are outside the Church, nor will we, who are inside, be seen to be handing it on with a view to the religion of God. Let us therefore be zealous about our morals and about love toward one another; and let us beware lest we become a cause of evils to ourselves, and a stumbling-block to all who see us;
因為我們無論怎樣默想他們的教訓,承認他們的信仰,若沒有他們的品行,就不能到達他們自己所去的地方;反倒要像瞎子,日頭的光照在他們身上,他們卻不能因日光而歡喜,因為他們缺乏接受日光作用的器官。因為真實說來,正確信仰的彰顯和完全管教的證實,乃是正直的生活;若沒有它,我們的教訓既不能在教會以外的人面前顯為可信,我們這在裏面的人,也不會被看出是為著神的敬虔而傳遞這教訓。所以,讓我們對我們的品行並對彼此相愛存著熱心;又要謹慎,免得我們成為自己受惡之事的緣由,並成為一切看見我們之人的絆腳石;
1:121
Amen.
but let us prepare ourselves for good works, that we may become worthy to hear that word which says: 'Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess the kingdom which was prepared for you from the foundation of the world,' with all the righteous of Christ; to whom be praise, and His mercy upon us, unto the ages. Amen. Here ends the discourse on the Nativity, made by Mar Thomas the Doctor of Edessa. May his prayer be upon the sinner who wrote it. Amen.
