Having said in the former epistle, 'We pray night and day to see you,' and, 'We could not endure it, but were left alone at Athens,' and, 'I sent Timothy,' by all these he makes plain the longing that he had, so as to come to them.
1:2
Since, then, he was perhaps not able to go and to supply what was lacking in their faith, for this reason he adds the second epistle, supplying by letters what was wanting from his presence.
1:3
That he did not go, one may conjecture from this:
1:4
'Now we beseech you concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.'
1:5
For also in the former epistle he said:
1:6
that, 'Concerning the times and the seasons you have no need that anything be written to you.'
1:7
這樣看來,倘若他親自在場,就毫無寫信的必要了;
So that, if he had been present, he would have had no need to write;
1:8
but since the question was being deferred, for this reason he adds this epistle, just as also in the epistle to Timothy he says that, 'Some overturn the faith of certain ones, saying that the resurrection has already taken place.'
1:9
This they did, in order that the faithful, no longer hoping for anything great or splendid, might give up in the face of their toils.
1:10
For since hope was sustaining them and did not allow them to yield to present circumstances, the devil, wishing to cut off, as it were, an anchor, since he could not persuade them that the things to come were false, came by another way; and setting up certain pestilent men, he undertook to deceive those who believed, as though those great and splendid things had already reached their end.
1:11
那時候,那些人說復活的事已經發生了;
At that time, then, those men said that the resurrection had already taken place;
1:12
如今他們卻說審判已經臨到,基督的降臨也已來到,這樣一面要使基督自己被歸於謊言,一面又叫人相信將來再無報應,也無審判、刑罰與報復加給那些行惡的人,好叫那些惡人更加放肆,而這些信徒更加消沉;
but now they said that the judgment was at hand, and the coming of Christ, so as both to subject Christ himself to a lie, and, having persuaded them that there is no longer any recompense, nor tribunal and punishment and vengeance for those who have done evil, to make those men bolder and these more downcast;
1:13
and what was indeed most grievous of all, some undertook simply to report words, as though these were spoken by Paul, while others even to forge letters as though written by him.
1:14
Therefore, walling off against them every avenue of approach, he says:
1:15
'Be not troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter, as though from us.'
1:16
'Neither by spirit,' he says, hinting at the false prophets.
1:17
他說:「那麼我們怎能知曉呢?」乃是「藉著那附加的記號」;
'Whence then shall we know?' he says. 'By the addition;'
1:18
for on this account he added:
1:19
'The salutation of Paul with my own hand, which is the token in every epistle;'
1:20
'The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.'
1:21
他的意思並不是說這問安的話本身就是記號;
He does not mean this, that this greeting is the token;
1:22
因為別人也很可能仿效這句話,他乃是說:「這問安是我親手所寫的」;
for it is likely that others too would imitate this, but rather that, 'I write the salutation with my own hand;'
1:23
正如今日在我們中間也是如此;
just as also now it is among us;
1:24
for from the signature the letters of those who send them become recognizable.
1:25
他們既被種種患難壓得憔悴不堪,他就極力安慰他們,既從眼前的事、又從將來的事來稱讚勉勵他們;
He greatly encourages them, worn out as they were by their evils, commending them both from present things and from things to come;
1:26
and urging them on from the punishment and from the recompense of the good things prepared for them, he treats the subject more plainly, not revealing the time itself, but making known the sign of the time, the Antichrist.
1:27
For a weak soul is then given full assurance, not if it simply hears, but if it learns something more.
1:28
And Christ too takes much thought about this, when, seated on the mountain, he discoursed to the disciples with all exactness concerning the consummation.
1:29
Why? That those who bring in the antichrists and false Christs might have no room.
1:30
祂自己也立下許多記號,其中一個且是最大的,就是說,這福音要傳遍萬邦的時候;
And he himself also sets down many signs, one indeed and greatest, saying, when the Gospel shall have been proclaimed in all the nations;
1:31
and another, so that they might not be led astray concerning his coming:
1:32
祂說:「祂要如同閃電來臨」,不是隱藏在某個角落,乃是遍處照耀;
'As lightning,' he says, 'it shall come,' not hidden in some corner, but shining everywhere;
1:33
it needs no one to announce it, so bright is it, even as neither does the lightning need one to announce it.
1:34
And he spoke somewhere also concerning the Antichrist, when he said:
1:35
「我奉我父的名而來,你們並不接待我;
'I have come in the name of my Father, and you received me not;'
1:36
'if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.'
1:37
祂又說,那接連不斷、難以言喻的災禍就是此事的憑據;
And the successive and unspeakable calamities he said were a token of this;
1:38
帖撒羅尼迦人當時對這些事感到困惑,然而他們的困惑對我們卻成了有益的;
The Thessalonians, then, were at that time perplexed about these things, but to us their perplexity has become useful;
1:39
for these things are useful not to them only, but also to us, that we may be delivered from childish fables and old wives' nonsense.
1:40
Or have you not, when you were children, often heard certain people saying much both about the name of the Antichrist and about the bending of the knees? For while our minds are still tender, the devil sows these things into them, that the doctrine may grow up together with us, that he may be able to deceive.
1:41
Paul, then, discoursing about the Antichrist, would not have passed over these things, if indeed they had been useful.
1:42
For he will not come thus, bending the knees, but 'Exalting himself above everything that is called god or an object of worship, so that he sits in the temple of God as god, showing himself forth that he is god.'
1:43
For just as the devil fell through mad presumption, so also he who is energized by him is anointed unto the same mad presumption.
1:44
Wherefore, I beseech you, let us all be earnest to keep far from this passion, that we may not fall into his same judgment, that we may not become liable to the same punishment, that we may not have fellowship in his same retribution.
1:45
'Not a novice,' he says, 'lest, being puffed up, he fall into the judgment of the devil.'
1:46
Therefore he that is puffed up incurs the same penalty as the devil.
1:47
他說:「驕傲的開端,就是不認識主」;
'For the beginning of pride,' he says, 'is not to know the Lord;'
1:48
罪的開端就是驕傲,是趨向惡的第一個衝動與起動;
the beginning of sin is pride, the first impulse and movement toward evil;
1:49
and perhaps, then, also its root and foundation.
1:50
因為「開端」一詞,或是指趨向惡的第一個衝動,或是指其構成的根基;
For 'the beginning' signifies either the first impulse toward evil, or the constitution and framework;
1:51
譬如有人說,貞潔的開端就是不看邪僻不當的景象,這是指第一個衝動;
as one might say, the beginning of chastity is to abstain from unseemly sights, that is, the first impulse;
1:52
but if we say, the beginning of chastity is fasting, that is, the foundation and system.
1:53
同樣,狂妄自恃就是罪的開端;
So too, presumption is the beginning of sin;
1:54
for from it every sin begins, and by it it is held together.
1:55
For that wickedness does not allow whatever good things we do to remain and not to fall away, but is, as it were, a root which does not permit them to stand unshaken, is plain from this:
1:56
你看那法利賽人行了何等多的善事,卻於他毫無益處;
behold how much the Pharisee wrought, yet nothing profited him;
1:57
for he did not cut out the root, but it ruined all.
1:58
從狂妄自恃生出輕看窮人、貪愛錢財、戀慕權位、渴求虛榮;
From presumption arise contempt of the poor, greed for money, lust for rule, longing for glory;
1:59
such a one is vindictive toward any insult.
1:60
因為那狂妄自恃的人,連受地位比他高之人的羞辱都不能忍受,何況是地位比他低的人;
For he that is presumptuous does not endure to be insulted even by his superiors, still less by his inferiors;
1:61
and he that does not endure to be insulted, neither endures to suffer any ill.
1:62
See how pride is the beginning of sin.
1:63
但不認識主又怎會是驕傲的開端呢?這是理所當然的;
But how is not knowing the Lord the beginning of pride? Reasonably so;
1:64
因為那按著當有的方式認識神的人,那知道神的兒子如此謙卑自己的人,就不會自高;
for he that knows God as one ought to know, he that knows that the Son of God so greatly humbled himself, is not lifted up;
1:65
唯有那不知道這些事的人才會自高;
but he that knows not these things is lifted up;
1:66
for pride anoints a man toward presumption.
1:67
For tell me, whence do these who war against the Church claim to know God? Is it not from presumption? Behold into what a precipice not knowing the Lord casts a man.
1:68
For if God loves a contrite spirit, then on the contrary he sets himself against the proud, and gives grace to the humble.
1:69
所以,論到惡,沒有甚麼能與驕傲相比;
Nothing, then, is equal to pride as an evil;
1:70
it turns a man into a demon: insolent, blasphemous, a perjurer; it makes him crave deaths and murders.
1:71
驕傲的人常與憂愁同住,常懷不平,常心煩意亂;
The proud man forever dwells with sorrows, forever chafes, forever is distraught;
1:72
沒有任何事物能夠滿足他的情慾;
there is nothing that can satisfy his passion;
1:73
even should he see the emperor bowing down and doing him homage, he is not satisfied, but rather is the more inflamed.
1:74
正如那貪愛錢財的人,無論得著多少,總還需要更多;
For just as the lovers of money, however much they receive, need still more,
1:75
那些喪失理智的人也是如此,無論享受多大的尊榮,仍渴望更多;
so also those who are out of their senses, however much honour they enjoy, desire the more,
1:76
for their passion grows (for it is a passion), and passion knows no limit, but ceases only then, when it slays the one who possesses it.
1:77
Do you not see the drunkards, that they are ever thirsty? For it is a passion, not a desire of nature, but a kind of distorted sickness.
1:78
Do you not see those whom they call afflicted with bulimia, that they are ever hungry? For it is a passion, as the sons of physicians say, having already passed beyond the bounds of nature.
1:79
那些好管閒事、喜好窺探的人也是如此:無論學到多少,總不止息;
So also the busybodies and the meddlesome: however much they learn, they do not stop;
1:80
for it is a passion, and it has no limit.
1:81
再者,那些以淫亂為樂的人,他們自己也不止息(經上說:『對淫蕩的人,一切餅都是甘甜的;
Again, those who delight in fornication, neither do they themselves stop ('For to a fornicating man,' it says, 'all bread is sweet;
1:82
he will not cease until he is consumed').
1:83
然而這些雖是情慾,卻並非無法醫治,乃是可以得著醫治的,而且遠比身體的疾病更容易醫治;
But these are passions, yet not incurable, but such as admit of healing, and much more so than the bodily ones;
1:84
for if we are willing, we are able to quench them.
1:85
How then is it possible to quench arrogance? By coming to know God.
1:86
For if it arises from not knowing God, then if we come to know Him, all arrogance is driven away.
1:87
當思想地獄,當思想那些遠比你更美好的人,當思想你欠神何等多的帳;
Consider hell, consider those who are far better than yourself, consider how great a reckoning you owe to God;
1:88
if you consider these things, quickly will you have curbed your mind, quickly bent it low.
1:89
But can you not do these things? Are you too weak? Then consider the things present, human nature itself, how man is nothing.
1:90
When you see a corpse borne through the marketplace, orphaned children following, a widowed woman beating her breast, household servants lamenting, friends downcast, reckon the nothingness of things present, and that they differ nothing from a shadow and dreams.
1:91
但你若不肯這樣行呢?那就當思想那些極其富有的人,那些在戰爭中無端喪命的人;
But will you not do this? Then consider those who are exceedingly rich, those who perish in wars for no cause at all;
1:92
當環視那些偉大顯赫之人的家宅,如今已夷為平地;
look round upon the houses of the great and illustrious, now brought down to the ground;
1:93
consider how great was their power, and now not even the memory of them is left.
1:94
For each day, if you wish, you find examples of these things:
1:95
successions of rulers, confiscations of the wealthy.
1:96
Many tyrants have sat upon the ground, while the man least expected has worn the diadem.
1:97
這些事豈不是天天發生嗎?我們的境況豈不像個轉輪嗎?你若願意,就讀讀我們自己的史記,也讀讀外邦人的(因為那些也充滿了這樣的例證),倘若你因懶惰而輕看我們自己的;
Do not these things happen every day? Do not our affairs resemble some wheel? Read, if you wish, both our own histories and those of the outsiders (for those too are full of these examples), if out of laziness you despise our own;
1:98
你若欽羨哲學家的著作,那也可去讀那些;
if you admire the writings of the philosophers, then go to these as well;
1:99
they will teach you, recounting the calamities of old, poets too, and orators, and sophists, and all the chroniclers.
1:100
From every side you find the examples, if you wish.
1:101
但你若這些事都不願意,那就當估量我們的本性本身,它是從何構成,又終歸何處;
But if you desire none of these things, then reckon up our very nature itself, whence it is composed, and where it ends;
1:102
當思想,你睡著的時候,你算得甚麼;
consider, when you sleep, of what worth you are;
1:103
shall not even a tiny beast be able to destroy you? For often to many a small living creature, falling from the roof, has either put out an eye or become the cause of some other danger.
1:104
What then? Are you not inferior to all the beasts? But what do you say? That you prevail by reason? But behold, you have no reason; for pride is a proof of unreason.
1:105
On what, tell me, do you pride yourself? On bodily vigour perhaps? But among the irrational animals belong the prizes of victory.
1:106
This belongs also to robbers and murderers and grave-plunderers.
1:107
那麼是以聰明自高嗎?可是心高氣傲並非聰明的表記;
But on understanding? But it is not the mark of understanding to be high-minded;
1:108
by this indeed you first deprive yourself of becoming intelligent.
1:109
讓我們收斂高傲的念頭,成為溫和謙卑的人;
Let us curb our high thoughts, let us become moderate and lowly;
1:110
for such persons above all did Christ also pronounce blessed, saying:
1:111
'Blessed are the poor in spirit;'
1:112
and again He cried out, saying, 'Learn from Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart.'
1:113
For this reason He washed the feet of the disciples, giving us an example of humility.
1:114
From all these things let us be eager to gain profit, that we may be able to attain the good things promised to those who love Him, by His grace and lovingkindness.
