Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy, unto the Church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
2:2
Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2:3
大多數人竭盡所能、費盡心機,為要在官長以及那些比自己尊大之人面前得著些恩寵;
The greater part of men do and contrive everything, so as to obtain some favour both with rulers and with those who are greater than themselves;
2:4
and they count this a great thing, and think themselves blessed, if they attain what they earnestly seek.
2:5
But if to obtain favour with men is so great a thing, to find grace with God—how great would that be? For this reason he always sets this at the forefront of his epistle, and this he prays for, knowing that if this be present, nothing henceforth will be grievous, but whatever things are hard, all will be dissolved.
2:6
And that you may learn: Joseph was a slave, young, inexperienced, artless, and suddenly he was entrusted with the management of a house, and rendered account to an Egyptian man.
2:7
你們也略知那民族是何等易怒且不肯饒恕的;
And you know somewhat how irascible and unforgiving that nation is;
2:8
and when authority and power are added besides, the wrath is the greater, being raised up by the power.
2:9
This is clear also from what he did afterwards.
2:10
因為當他的女主人控告他時,他就默然忍受;
For when his mistress accused him, he endured it;
2:11
and yet it was not the part of those who held the garments to be doing violence, but of the one who had been stripped.
2:12
For she ought to have said that, if you had raised your voice, he would have fled; and if he had been conscious of guilt in himself, he would not have awaited the master's coming.
2:13
然而那人卻毫無這樣的思量,反倒無理性地把一切都交付給他的怒氣,將約瑟下在監裡;
But nevertheless that man reasoned nothing of the sort, but, having irrationally surrendered the whole matter to his wrath, cast him into prison.
2:14
其實從別的情形上,本也可以推想出那人的善意和謹慎;
And yet it was possible, even from the other circumstances, to conjecture the man's goodwill and his prudence;
2:15
but nevertheless, since he was exceedingly irrational, he reasoned nothing of the sort.
2:16
This man then, who had so wicked a master, and was entrusted with the service of a whole household, and was a stranger and desolate and inexperienced—since God poured out upon him abundant grace, so that the temptations were as nothing—thus he passed through all things: the slander of his mistress, and the peril of death, and the prison, and at last came to the royal throne.
2:17
所以這位有福的人看見了神的恩典是何等的大;
This blessed man therefore saw how great is the grace of God;
2:18
and for this reason he prays that this may be theirs.
2:19
他還籌劃了另一件事;
And he contrives yet another thing besides;
2:20
for wishing himself to render them well-disposed toward the matters to follow in the epistle,
2:21
為叫他們縱然被責備、被斥責,也不致跳脫而去;
so that, even if he rebuke, even if he chide, they may not start away;
2:22
為此,他就首先提醒他們神的恩典,柔和他們的心,好叫他們縱然遭遇患難,一想起那救他們脫離更大危險的恩典,就不至於在較小的患難中灰心失望,反倒從那裡得著安慰;
for this reason he reminds them, before all else, of the grace of God, softening their hearts, so that, even if affliction come, they, calling to mind the grace by which they were saved from the greater dangers, may not despair in the lesser, but may have from thence their consolation;
2:23
just as also, writing elsewhere, he said:
2:24
'For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by His life.'
2:25
'Grace unto you,' he says, 'and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.'
2:26
'We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting.'
2:27
Behold the surpassing measure of his humility!
2:28
Having said, 'We are bound to give thanks,' he leads them to reason and to consider that if others do not first marvel at you for your good deeds, but at God, then much more do we.
2:29
He praises their disposition, that in suffering such things they are worthy not of tears nor of lamentations, but of thanksgiving to God.
2:30
But if Paul gives thanks over the good things of others, what shall be the lot of those who not only give no thanks, but even pine away with envy? 'Because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all toward each other abounds.'
2:31
And how is it possible for faith to grow? he asks. How? When we suffer something grievous on its behalf.
2:32
能站立得穩、不被種種思慮所動搖,這固然是大事;
It is indeed a great thing to be firmly established, and not to be carried away by one's reasonings;
2:33
but when the winds also dash against us, when the rains burst down, when a fierce storm rises from every side, when wave upon wave presses on, and then we are not shaken, this is a proof of nothing else but that faith has grown, and grown exceedingly, and become loftier.
2:34
正如在洪水之時,一切低矮如石的都迅速被淹沒,凡是高聳的,水卻夠不著它們;
For just as in the flood all things stony and low were quickly hidden, but whatever stood high the waters did not reach;
2:35
so also faith, when it has become lofty, is no longer dragged down.
2:36
For this reason he did not say, 'grows,' but 'Your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all toward each other abounds.'
2:37
Do you see that this too contributes toward enduring afflictions—the being closely knit together, the holding fast to one another? From this also came much consolation.
2:38
Now afflictions shake a weak love and faith, but they make a strong one stronger.
2:39
For the soul in pain, when it is weak, could add nothing; but the strong soul does so then most of all.
2:40
他們不是愛這個而不愛那個,乃是對眾人都有同等的愛;
They did not love this one but not that one, but their love was equal toward all;
2:41
因為他說「你們眾人彼此」時,就暗示了這一點;
for this he hinted at by saying, 'of every one of you all toward each other';
2:42
namely, that it is something evenly balanced, as of one body.
2:43
Since even now we find love existing among many, but this love becomes a cause of division.
2:44
For when we are joined together by twos and threes, and the two are very closely bound to each other, or three or four, but withdraw themselves from the rest—having their refuge in resorting to those few and confiding everything to them—this is a division of love, not love.
2:45
If the eye should transfer to the hand the care which it has for the whole body, and turning itself away from the other members should attend to that alone, does it not injure the whole? Naturally so.
2:46
So we too, if the love which ought to be extended to the whole Church of God we confine to one or two, injure ourselves and them and the whole.
2:47
For these things are not of love, but schisms of division, and rents torn asunder.
2:48
因為即或我取一片從整個人身上撕下來的部分,那撕裂之物本身固然自成一體,是連貫且黏合在一起的;
Since even if I take a part torn away from the whole man, that very fragment is indeed united to itself, and is continuous and cemented together;
2:49
yet even so it is a schism, since it is not united to the rest of the body.
2:50
你熱切地愛某一個人,有什麼益處呢?那不過是人的愛罷了;
For what profit is it that you love such a one vehemently? That is a merely human love;
2:51
但你的愛若不是屬人的,乃是為神的緣故而愛,就當愛眾人;
but if it is not human, but you love for God's sake, then love all;
2:52
for God commanded us thus to love even our enemies.
2:53
But if He commanded us to love our enemies, how much more those who have done us no harm? But 'I do love,' he says.
2:54
For when you speak evil, when you envy, when you plot mischief, how do you love? 'But I do none of these things,' he says.
2:55
But when someone is being slandered, if you do not stop the mouth of the one speaking, if you do not disbelieve what is said, if you do not check it—of what kind of friendship is that a proof? 'And the love of every one of you all toward each other abounds,' he says, 'so that we ourselves boast of you in the Churches of God.'
2:56
無論如何,在前一封書信裡,他說馬其頓和亞該亞的眾教會,聽見他們信心的光景,都傳揚開了;
In the former epistle, at any rate, he says that all the Churches of Macedonia and of Achaia resounded with the report, having learned of the state of their faith;
2:57
他說:「以致我們不用說什麼;
'So that,' he says, 'we have no need to speak anything;
2:58
for they themselves report concerning you what kind of entrance we had unto you.'
2:59
But here he says, 'So that you yourselves boast.'
2:60
那麼所說的是什麼意思呢?在那裡他說他們不需要教導;
What then is the meaning of what is said? There he says that they need no teaching;
2:61
but here he does not say that we teach them, but that we boast and take pride in them.
2:62
If therefore we both give thanks to God for you and boast of you before men, much more ought you to do this over our good things.
2:63
For if your good deeds are worthy of boasting to others, how could they be worthy of lamentation to us? It cannot be said.
2:64
'So that we ourselves,' he says, 'boast of you in the Churches of God, for your patience and faith.'
2:65
在這裡他顯明也已經過了很長的時間;
Here he shows that a long time also had passed;
2:66
for patience is manifested from a long period, not in two or three days.
2:67
And he does not speak of patience simply.
2:68
因為最重要的是,連那尚未享受所應許的美善,也是忍耐的一種;
For, above all, even the not yet enjoying the promised good things is a matter of patience;
2:69
but now he speaks of a still greater patience.
2:70
What kind of patience is this? That which is exercised through persecutions.
2:71
And that he hints at this is clear from what he adds and says:
2:72
'In all your persecutions and afflictions which you endure.'
2:73
For they lived continually among enemies who from every side attempted to harm them, and they displayed a firm and unshakable patience.
2:74
Let them be ashamed, as many as go over to certain doctrines for the sake of human patronage.
2:75
For while the preaching was still at its beginning, poor men who lived from their daily labor took upon themselves the hostility of men who held public office and were foremost in the city, when neither emperor nor ruler anywhere was a believer, and they underwent a war without truce, and not even so did they give way.
2:76
'A manifest token of the righteous judgment of God.'
2:77
See how he gathers up consolation for them.
2:78
他曾說「我們感謝神」,又說「我們在人面前誇口」;
He said, 'We give thanks to God'; he said, 'We boast among men';
2:79
but what the one in pain most seeks is this—deliverance from evils, and the punishment of those who ill-treat them.
2:80
因為當靈魂軟弱時,最切望的就是這些事;
For when the soul is weak, it seeks these things most of all;
2:81
but the philosophic soul does not even seek this.
2:82
那麼他所說「神公義審判的明證」是什麼意思呢?他已經暗示了兩樣的報應——就是那作惡之人的報應,和那受苦之人的報應;
What then is it that he says, 'A token of the righteous judgment of God'? He has already hinted at both recompenses—both that of those who do evil, and that of those who suffer;
2:83
so that, when He crowns you but punishes them, the righteousness of God may be displayed.
2:84
At the same time he also comforts them, showing that from their own toils and sweat, and according to the principle of righteousness, they are crowned.
2:85
But first he sets down what concerns themselves.
2:86
For even if one greatly desires vengeance, yet he first longs for the prizes.
2:87
For this reason he also adds, saying:
2:88
'That you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer.'
2:89
So then this comes about not because the wrongdoers are more powerful, but because one must enter the kingdom in this way.
2:90
'For through many afflictions,' he says, 'we must enter into the kingdom of God.'
2:91
'If indeed it is a righteous thing with God to recompense affliction to those who afflict you, and to you who are afflicted rest with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with the angels of his power.'
2:92
這裡「既是」一詞,乃是用在「因為」的意義上;
The word 'if indeed' here stands in the sense of 'since';
2:93
which we too employ in the case of things very fully agreed upon and beyond dispute.
2:94
'If it is a righteous thing with God,' he says, 'to requite these men, He will surely requite them;'
2:95
if things are of concern to God, if God takes thought.
2:96
So he too puts down this 'if indeed,' as of things agreed upon.
2:97
whether God hates the wicked.
2:98
祂之所以這樣說,是為要迫使那些人承認:祂確實恨惡他們;
He speaks thus for this reason, that He may compel those men to admit that He does hate them;
2:99
for verdicts of this kind are especially beyond dispute,
2:100
since even those very men know that it is just.
2:101
For if this is just in the eyes of men, much more is it so with God.
2:102
He says, 'To recompense tribulation to them that afflict you, and to you who are afflicted rest with us.'
2:103
那麼怎樣呢?這報應是相等的嗎?絕不是的;
What then? Is the recompense equal? By no means;
2:104
but observe from what follows how he shows it to be more intense, and the rest to be far greater.
2:105
Behold yet another consolation:
2:106
for he says that they who are partakers of the afflictions shall also have them as partakers in the recompense (this
2:107
joining them together in the crowns, together with those who have accomplished ten thousand and greater deeds.
2:108
Then he adds also the time, and by the description he lifts up their minds, all but opening the heavens to them already by his word, and setting them before their very eyes, and encircling Him with the angelic host; and both from the place and from those who are with Him he makes the image more expansive, so that they may breathe again a little.
2:109
'And to you,' he says, 'who are afflicted, rest with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with the angels of His power, in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.'
2:110
If they that obey not the Gospel suffer punishment, then they who, besides not obeying, also afflict you—what shall they not suffer? But mark for me his discernment:
2:111
he did not say here 'to them that afflict you,' but 'to them that obey not.'
2:112
So that even if not for your sake, yet for His own sake, he says, He must needs punish them.
2:113
這話乃是為了給人完全的確據,就是他們無論如何都必受刑罰;
This then was said for the sake of full assurance, that they must by all means be punished;
2:114
but the former was for the sake of showing that they too are honoured.
2:115
那關於刑罰的確據使人生出信心;
The assurance concerning the punishment produces belief;
2:116
but the being gladdened comes from this, that they suffer these things on account of what was done against them.
2:117
These things then were spoken with reference to those men.
2:118
When therefore we are in afflictions, let us reason thus.
2:119
Let us not rejoice at the punishment of others as though we were being avenged, but as being ourselves delivered from such chastisement and punishment.
2:120
For what profit is it to us when others are punished? Let us not have such souls, I beseech you; let us be urged on to virtue by the kingdom.
2:121
因為那極為有德的人,既不是被懼怕、也不是被國度所引導,乃是單為基督自己的緣故;
For he who is exceedingly virtuous is led on neither by fear nor by the kingdom, but for Christ's own sake;
2:122
nevertheless let us think upon the good things in the kingdom and the evils in hell, and even so let us order and discipline ourselves, and even so let us urge ourselves on to the things that must be done.
2:123
當你在今生看見什麼美好而偉大的事物時,就思念那國度,你便會把它看為無有;
When you see anything pleasant and great in the present life, think upon the kingdom, and you will count it as nothing;
2:124
當你看見什麼可怕之事時,就思念地獄,你便會嗤笑它;
when you see anything fearful, think upon hell, and you will laugh it to scorn;
2:125
when you are held fast by bodily desire, reckon up the fire, reckon up also the very pleasure of sin, that it is worth nothing, that it does not even possess pleasure.
2:126
For if the fear of the laws that are laid down here has such power as even to draw us away from wicked deeds, much more the remembrance of things to come—the punishment that is immortal, the chastisement that is everlasting;
2:127
if the fear of the king who is upon earth draws us away from so many evils, how much more that of the eternal King? Whence then are we able to have this fear continually? If we listen constantly to the Scriptures.
2:128
For if the mere sight of a corpse so restrains our mind, how much more hell and the unquenchable fire? How much more the worm that never dies? If we always ponder hell, we shall not quickly fall into it.
2:129
神正是為此才以懲罰相威嚇;
For this reason God threatened chastisement;
2:130
因為若思想它並無多大益處,神就不會如此預先以它相威嚇了;
for if to reflect upon it had no great gain, God would not have threatened it beforehand;
2:131
but since the remembrance of it has power to accomplish great things, therefore, like some saving medicine, He has laid up the threat of it in our souls.
2:132
Let us not then despise so great a gain as that which is born from this, but let us continually revolve it in our minds—at our best meals, at our banquets.
2:133
因為談論那些愉悅之事,對靈魂毫無益處,反倒使它更加軟弱;
For conversation about pleasant things profits the soul nothing, but rather makes it more enfeebled;
2:134
whereas conversation about painful and gloomy things cuts away all that is dissipated and dissolute in it, and turns it back and gathers it in when it has been let loose.
2:135
那談論戲院與伶人的,對靈魂毫無益處,反倒更加點燃它,使它更加輕率妄動;
He who discourses about theatres and stage-players profits it nothing, but rather inflames it more and makes it more headlong;
2:136
he who is anxious and busies himself about other men's affairs has often through this meddlesomeness brought dangers also upon it.
2:137
But he who discourses about hell will incur no danger, and makes it more temperate.
2:138
Is the subject of these words burdensome? For, pray, if you keep silent, have you quenched hell? or if you speak of it, have you kindled it? Whether you speak of it or do not speak of it, the fire will boil up.
2:139
Let it be spoken of continually, that you may never fall into it.
2:140
一個為地獄憂懼的靈魂,是不可能很快犯罪的;
It is not possible for a soul that is anxious about hell to sin quickly;
2:141
for hear the excellent exhortation:
2:142
'Remember,' it says, 'thy last end, and thou shalt never sin.'
2:143
一個懼怕交帳的靈魂,是不可能對自己的過犯掉以輕心的;
It is not possible for a soul that dreads the giving of account to be careless about its transgressions;
2:144
for fear, when it is in its full vigour in the mind, leaves nothing worldly to be in it.
2:145
因為若單單興起一番關於它的談論,就能這樣使靈魂謙卑、收斂,那麼一種常存於我們靈魂中的思念,豈不比任何火更能潔淨靈魂嗎?我們記念國度,不要過於記念地獄;
For if a discourse merely stirred up about it thus humbles and gathers in the soul, will not a reflection dwelling in our souls perpetually cleanse the soul more than any fire? Let us not remember the kingdom so much as hell;
2:146
for fear has more power than the promise.
2:147
我也知道,許多人若能脫離那懲罰,就寧願捨棄千萬樣美善之物;
And I know that many would have despised ten thousand good things, had they been released from the chastisement;
2:148
since even now it suffices for me not to be punished, not to be chastised.
2:149
凡把地獄常擺在眼前的人,沒有一個會墮入地獄;
No one of those who have hell before their eyes will fall into hell;
2:150
no one of those who despise hell will escape hell.
2:151
因為正如在我們中間,那些懼怕法庭的人不致被法庭定罪,而那些藐視法庭的人,正是最容易落在其中的人;
For just as among us those who fear the tribunals will not be caught by the tribunals, but those who despise them are especially the ones who fall into them;
2:152
尼尼微人若不懼怕那傾覆,就必被傾覆了;
If the Ninevites had not feared the overthrow, they would have been overthrown;
2:153
but because they feared, they were not overthrown.
2:154
在挪亞的日子,那些人若懼怕那洪水,就不至被洪水淹沒了;
If they in the days of Noah had feared the flood, they would not have been overwhelmed by it;
2:155
and the men of Sodom, if they had feared, would not have been burned up.
2:156
藐視警戒的威嚇,乃是極大的禍患;
It is a great evil to despise a threat;
2:157
he who despises a threat will quickly come to feel the trial of it through the reality itself.
2:158
再沒有什麼比談論地獄更有益處的了;
Nothing is so profitable as to discourse about hell;
2:159
it renders our souls purer than any silver.
2:160
For hear the Prophet saying, 'Thy judgments are ever before me.'
2:161
And Christ also discourses continually about it.
2:162
For even if it grieves the hearer, yet it profits him in the greatest degree.
2:163
因為凡有益處的事,都是這樣的;
For such are all things that profit;
2:164
for medicines too, and food, though at first they grieve the sick man, then bring the benefit.
2:165
然而,我們若連言語的沉重都不能忍受,那顯然,我們也不能忍受那藉著實際患難而來的苦楚;
But if we cannot endure the weightiness of words, it is plain that we shall not endure the affliction that comes through deeds;
2:166
if no one can endure the discourses about hell, it is plain that, if persecution came upon us, no one would ever stand firm against fire, against the sword.
2:167
Let us train our hearing not to grow soft and effeminate; for from this we shall come also to actual deeds.
2:168
For from this we shall pass on also to the practice of deeds.
2:169
我們若習慣於聽見可畏的事,也就必習慣於忍受可畏的事;
If we accustom ourselves to hear fearful things, we shall accustom ourselves also to endure fearful things;
2:170
but if we are so enervated that we cannot bear even words, when shall we ever stand firm against the realities themselves? Do you see how the blessed Paul despised all things here below, and the perils that came one upon another? Why so? Because he had schooled himself to despise even hell for the sake of what seemed good to God.
2:171
那人因著對基督的渴慕,甚至不把地獄的經歷當作一回事;
That man, because of his longing for Christ, did not consider even the experience of hell to be anything;
2:172
yet we, for the sake of the things that profit us, cannot endure even the mere words about it.
2:173
所以如今你們聽了一點,就離去了;
For now, then, having heard a little, you depart;
2:174
but I beseech you, if there is any love in you, to be forever turning over among yourselves the discourses concerning these matters.
2:175
這些話語縱然不能帶來益處,也絕不能造成任何損害;
They will be able to do no harm, even if they bring no benefit;
2:176
而它們必定確實會帶來益處;
but assuredly they will indeed bring benefit;
2:177
for the soul is fashioned in accordance with its conversations.
2:178
'Evil communications,' it says, 'corrupt good manners.'
2:179
所以美善的交談是有益處的;
Therefore good conversations are of benefit;
2:180
therefore fearful conversations also bring us to sober-mindedness.
2:181
因為魂好比是一種蠟;
For the soul is like a kind of wax;
2:182
你若將冷漠的交談加給它,就使它剛硬麻木;
for if you apply cold conversations to it, you harden it and make it callous;
2:183
但你若加給它火熱的交談,就使它變得柔軟;
but if you apply warm and fiery ones, you soften it;
2:184
and having softened it, you mould it into whatever shape you wish, and you engrave upon it the royal image.
2:185
所以,讓我們塞住自己的耳朵,不聽那些空洞的交談;
Let us therefore stop up our ears against idle conversations;
2:186
這惡並非小事;
the evil is no small one;
2:187
from this arise all evils.
2:188
我們的心思若曾操練專注於神聖的話語,就不會去留意別的話語;
If our mind had been practised in attending to divine words, it would not have attended to others;
2:189
and not attending to others, it would not have gone on to wicked deeds either.
2:190
因為言語是通往行為的道路;
For the word is the road to deeds;
2:191
first we conceive a thought, then we speak, then we act.
2:192
Often even sober men have gone from shameful words to shameful deeds.
2:193
For our soul is neither good by nature nor evil, but it becomes this or that by deliberate choice.
2:194
正如那帆,風往哪裡吹,就把船帶往哪裡;
Just as, then, the sail carries the ship wherever the wind may blow;
2:195
更確切地說,正如那舵,在順風的時候把船帶往它所要去的方向;
or rather, just as the rudder carries the ship, when the wind is favourable;
2:196
我們的理性也是如此:美善的話語若如順風般載著它前行,它便能平安無險地航行;
so too the reasoning faculty: if fair words are borne along with a favourable wind, it will sail without danger;
2:197
but if the opposite, they will often even sink the reasoning faculty.
2:198
因為風之於船是怎樣,話語之於魂也是怎樣;
For what the winds are to ships, that words are to souls;
2:199
wherever you wish, you lead it and turn it about.
2:200
For this reason someone, exhorting, says:
2:201
'Let all your discourse be in the law of the Most High.'
2:202
因此我勸你們,當你們把幼小的孩子從奶母那裡接過來時,不要使他們習慣於老婦人的荒誕故事,乃要從最幼小的年紀就教他們曉得有審判;
Wherefore I exhort you, when you take your little children from the nurse, let us not accustom them to old wives' tales, but from the earliest age let each learn that there is a judgement;
2:203
要把有刑罰這事牢牢地栽種在他們的心思裡;
let it be fixed fast in their mind that there is punishment;
2:204
this fear, once rooted deep, works great good.
2:205
因為一個從最幼小的年紀就學會被這盼望所震動的魂,不會輕易地擺脫這敬畏;
For a soul that has learned from the earliest age to be shaken by this expectation will not quickly shake off this dread;
2:206
乃要像一匹馴良的馬,有地獄的念頭騎坐其上,就能循規蹈矩而行,並說出有益的話;
but like some well-broken horse, having the thought of hell seated upon it, walking in good order it will speak and utter useful things;
2:207
and neither youth, nor wealth, nor orphanhood, nor anything else will be able to harm it, since it has its reasoning so firm and able to withstand all things.
2:208
With these words let us order aright both our own selves, and our wives, and servants, and children, and friends, and, if possible, our enemies too.
2:209
For with these words we can cut short the great mass of our sins, and it is better to spend our time amid things sorrowful than amid things pleasant.
2:210
For tell me: if you go into a house where a wedding is being celebrated, for a moment you take pleasure in the spectacle, but afterwards, when you have departed, you waste yourself away with grief, because you do not possess such things.
2:211
但你若進入哀悼者的家,即使他們極其富有,你離去時反而更得安息;
But if you enter a house of mourners, even though they be exceedingly rich, when you depart you will rather be at rest;
2:212
οὐ.
for from thence you received no envy, but consolation and comfort concerning your own poverty.
2:213
You have seen, by means of the facts themselves, how wealth is no good thing, and poverty no evil, but they are matters indifferent.
2:214
如今也是如此:你若談論奢華,反而使那或許無力享受奢華的魂受傷;
So too now: if you discourse about luxury, you rather wound the soul that perhaps has no means to indulge in luxury;
2:215
but when, against luxury, you throw into the midst also the words about hell, the thing gladdens you, and will bring forth much pleasure.
2:216
因為當你思想到奢華絲毫不能幫助我們抵擋那火時,你就不再尋求它;
For when you consider that luxury will be able to avail us nothing against that fire, you will not seek after it;
2:217
but if you reckon that it is even wont to kindle it the more, you will not only not seek after it, but will even turn away from it and thrust it off.
2:218
所以,讓我們不要逃避論到地獄的話語,好叫我們能逃避地獄本身;
Let us not then flee the discourses about hell, that we may flee hell itself;
2:219
let us not flee the remembrance of punishment, that we may not be punished.
2:220
那財主若曾思想過那火,就不至犯罪;
If that rich man had pondered upon that fire, he would not have sinned;
2:221
but since he never called it to mind, for this reason he fell into it.
2:222
人哪,請告訴我:你將要站在基督的審判台前,卻甚麼都談,就是不談這事嗎?當你在審判官面前有一場官司,哪怕只為著幾句言語,你往往不分晝夜、不論時機、不論鐘點,別的都不談,只不住地談論那件事;
Tell me, O man: about to stand before the judgement-seat of Christ, you speak of everything rather than of this? And when you have a lawsuit before a judge, over mere words, often neither night nor day, nor occasion, nor hour, do you speak of anything else, but continually about that matter;
2:223
yet when you are about to give account for your whole life and to render your reckoning, you cannot endure to hear about the trial even when others remind you of it? Therefore, for this very reason, all is ruined and corrupted, because when we are about to stand before a human tribunal over worldly matters we move every stone, we entreat everyone, we are perpetually anxious about it, we do everything for the sake of it; but when we are about to come, before long, to the judgement-seat of Christ, we do nothing either by ourselves or through others, we do not entreat the Judge.
2:224
And yet He gives us a long respite, and does not snatch us away in the midst of our sins, but suffers us to put them off; and that goodness and love toward mankind of His omits nothing that pertains to Him.
2:225
但這卻毫無果效;
But nothing more comes of it;
2:226
因此,我懇求你們,至少讓我們如今清醒過來;讓我們把地獄擺在眼前;讓我們思想那無可推諉的算帳;
Wherefore, I beseech you, let us at least now come to our senses; let us keep hell before our eyes; let us ponder those inexorable reckonings;
2:227
that, considering these things, we may both flee vice and choose virtue, and may be able to attain the good things promised to those who love Him, by grace and love toward mankind.
