Why is the tree called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and what does it mean, 'Today shalt thou be with Me in paradise.'
7:2
I earnestly exhorted your charity yesterday to remember the things that had been said, and in the evening to set out a twofold table—that of foods, and, adding thereto, the banquet that comes from words.
7:3
What then? Did you do this, and set out the twofold table? I know that you did, and that you partook not of that one only, but of this one also.
7:4
For surely you were not going to be zealous about the lesser and neglect the better.
7:5
For this one is better than that one.
7:6
因為那一席是廚子的手所調製的,這一席卻是眾先知的舌所預備的;
For the one the hands of cooks compounded, but this one the tongues of prophets prepared;
7:7
那一席所有的,是從地裡生長出來的產物,這一席所有的,卻是那從聖靈而來的果子;
and the one has the produce that springs from the earth, but the other the fruit that is from the Spirit;
7:8
這一席的食物趨向朽壞,那一席的食物卻趨向不朽;
and the foods of this table hasten toward corruption, but those of that one toward incorruption;
7:9
and this one sustains our present life, but that one guides us toward the life to come.
7:10
That you have received this teaching along with the former one I know full well, having questioned neither a follower nor a household servant, but a witness clearer than these.
7:11
And who is this witness? The applause of the things spoken, the praise bestowed upon the teaching.
7:12
For when I said yesterday that each of you should make his own house a church, you cried out loudly, showing the delight you took in what had been said.
7:13
The man who listens with delight to what is spoken is thereby also prepared for the demonstration of it in works.
7:14
For this reason I too have today stripped myself more eagerly for the work of teaching.
7:15
For not only must the speaker be wide awake, but the hearers too must be all attention; indeed the hearers even more than the speaker.
7:16
因為我們只有一件要務,就是傾倒出主人的資財;
For we have but one concern, to lay down the Master's treasures;
7:17
but yours is the greater labor, both to receive them and to guard them with much security.
7:18
Therefore, after the hearing, set the bolts upon the doors,
7:19
and, like so many guards, station godly, reverent thoughts on every side around the soul.
7:20
For the thief is shameless, he keeps watch continually, he assaults without ceasing; and though he often fails, he often makes the attempt.
7:21
所以,願那些守衛乃是令人生畏的;
Let the guards, then, be fearsome;
7:22
他們若看見魔鬼前來,想要奪去所存放之物中的任何一件,就當大聲吶喊把他趕走;
and if they see the devil coming and wishing to snatch away anything of what has been laid down, let them drive him off with much shouting;
7:23
屬世的思慮若來侵擾,就當攔阻它們;
and if worldly cares press upon you, let them keep them back;
7:24
and if forgetfulness, arising from nature, troubles you, let them rouse the memory by diligent practice.
7:25
For it is no small danger to lose the Master's treasures.
7:26
因為那些領受這等錢財的人,若揮霍了所託付之物,往往被處以死刑;
For if those who receive such moneys, when they squander what was entrusted, are often punished with death,
7:27
what punishment will they not undergo who, having received these oracles far more precious than those, then lose them? In the case of these moneys, only those who receive them are held accountable for their safekeeping, and for nothing else.
7:28
因為他們領受了多少,就必須如數償還,無人向他們索討分毫多於此的;
For however much they have received, exactly so much must they of necessity pay back, and nothing more is demanded of them;
7:29
but in the case of the words of God we are held accountable not only for safekeeping, but also for much labor upon them.
7:30
For we are commanded not merely to render back the very things we received, but even to bring these to the Master doubled.
7:31
然而,即便單單是保管而已,這事也需要極大的努力與殷勤;
And yet, even if it were merely a matter of guarding, the task would call for much striving and diligence;
7:32
but when the Master commands us also to increase them, consider how much toil and care we, to whom they have been entrusted, require.
7:33
This is why the man entrusted with five talents brought, not merely as much as had been entrusted, but as much again.
7:34
因為那起初的數目乃是出於主人的慈愛;
For that first sum was of the master's kindness;
7:35
but the servant too had to display his own diligence.
7:36
Likewise the man entrusted with the two talents worked and gained another two, and for this reason was deemed worthy of the same honor from his own master.
7:37
But yet another, entrusted with one talent and bringing back the very thing he had received, neither diminishing nor lessening the deposit, nor rendering back but the half of it, yet because he did not put it to work nor bring back the entrusted sum doubled, paid the uttermost penalty.
7:38
'For if,' he says, 'I had wished them merely to be kept safe, and no further trading to be done with them, I would not have put them into the hands of servants.'
7:39
But consider for me the loving-kindness of the master.
7:40
那受託五他連得的人帶來了另外五他連得,那受託兩他連得的也帶來了同樣多的;
The man entrusted with the five talents brought another five, and the man with the two brought as many again;
7:41
and each of them enjoyed the same recompense.
7:42
'Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will set you over many.'
7:43
So also to the man who brought back the two he says, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will set you over many.'
7:44
所得的收益雖不相同,賞賜卻是一樣的;
The proceeds were not the same, yet the reward was the same;
7:45
for so did he deem this man too worthy of the same honor.
7:46
Why so? Because God attended not to the quantity of what was brought, but to the capacity of those who labored.
7:47
因為他們各人都盡其所能顯出了自己的力量;
For each of them displayed what lay within his power;
7:48
and the greater abundance of what was brought by the one and the lesser amount by the other was caused, not by the sloth of that man nor by the diligence of this, but by the difference of the deposit.
7:49
這一位領受了五他連得,便帶來了另外五他連得;
The one received five and brought another five;
7:50
the other received two and brought two, and in no respect was he inferior as regards the measure of diligence.
7:51
For this one too worked the entrusted sum into double, as did that one likewise.
7:52
You have heard, then, how great a punishment lies in store for those who do not trade with the Master's treasures. Let us therefore both guard them and trade with them, and display much commerce concerning them.
7:53
'I am a layman, I am a disciple, I have no gift of teaching, being unlearned and worthy of nothing.'
7:54
For even if you are a layman, even if unlearned, even if entrusted with but one talent, work at what has been put into your hands, and you shall receive the same reward as the teacher.
7:55
至於你們正在保守所講之言,並以極大的精細將其牢牢持守,這一點我是深信不疑的;
But that you are guarding what has been said and holding it fast with much exactness, I am fully persuaded;
7:56
yet, that we may not spend the whole discourse on this, come, let us add for your love what follows upon the things spoken to us yesterday, rendering you this as the reward of your safekeeping.
7:57
For he who was entrusted with the former things and kept them would be worthy to receive yet others again.
7:58
What, then, was the narrative set before us yesterday? The discourse was concerning the tree, and we showed that the man knew good and evil before ever he ate of the tree, and that he was filled with much wisdom, as is evident from the fact that he gave names to the beasts, that he recognized his own wife, and that he said,
7:59
「這是我骨中的骨」;
'This is now bone of my bones;'
7:60
and from the fact that he discoursed concerning marriage and child-bearing, and wedlock, and father and mother; and from the fact that he received a commandment.
7:61
For no one gives a commandment and a law of what is to be done and not to be done to one who is ignorant of good and evil.
7:62
今日則有必要說明,若那人並非從那樹得著知識,何以那樹被稱為分別善惡的樹;
Today it is necessary to say why, if the man did not receive the knowledge from the tree, the tree is called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil;
7:63
for it is no small thing to learn why it bears this appellation, 'tree.'
7:64
For the devil too said,
7:65
'In the day that you eat of the tree, your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.'
7:66
'How, then,' someone says, 'do you say that He did not implant a knowledge of good and evil? For who, tell me, implanted it? Was it perchance the devil?' Yes, he says, in saying,
7:67
'You shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.'
7:68
難道你竟拿那與我為敵、又設謀害我之人的見證來給我嗎?況且這人還曾說:「你們也必如神一樣」;
Then do you bring me the testimony of my enemy and the plotter against me? And yet this one said, 'You shall be as gods too;'
7:69
did they, then, actually become gods? Just as, therefore, they did not become gods, so neither did they then receive a knowledge of good and evil.
7:70
For that one is a liar, and utters nothing true.
7:71
'For he stands not in the truth,' it says.
7:72
Let us not, then, adduce the testimony of the enemy, but let us see from the very facts why the tree is called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
7:73
And first, if it seems good, let us inquire what exactly good and evil are.
7:74
What, then, is good? Obedience.
7:75
And meanwhile, that we may not go astray concerning the nature of good and evil, let these things be accurately determined for us from the Scriptures.
7:76
For that this is what good and evil are, hear what the prophet says:
7:77
'What is good, and what does the Lord God seek from you?' Tell me, what is good?
7:78
'To love the Lord your God.'
7:79
Do you see that obedience is good? For obedience springs from love.
7:80
'Two evil things,' He says, 'has this My people done:'
7:81
'they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living water, and have hewn out for themselves broken cisterns, which will not be able to hold water.'
7:82
Do you see that disobedience and forsaking are an evil thing? For the present, then, let us hold fast to this: that obedience is good and disobedience is evil; and in this way we shall come to understand that other matter as well.
7:83
For it is on this account that the tree is called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil: because the commandment, which trained obedience and disobedience, was established concerning that tree.
7:84
因為早在此以前,亞當就已經知道順從是善的、悖逆是惡的;
For even before this Adam knew that obedience is good and disobedience evil;
7:85
but afterward he learned it more clearly through the very experience of the facts.
7:86
因為正如該隱在殺害他兄弟以前,也早已知道殺害弟兄乃是惡事;
For just as Cain also knew, even before he slew his brother, that fratricide is an evil;
7:87
that he did indeed know the deed to be wicked, hear what he says:
7:88
'Come, let us go out into the field.'
7:89
And yet, for what reason do you drag your brother into the field, tearing him away from his father's embrace?
7:90
Why do you set him in a solitary place? Why do you strip him of protection? Why do you lead him far from his father's sight? Why do you hide your daring deed, if you do not fear the sin? And why, even after committing the murder, when questioned again, are you vexed and do you lie? For when God said,
7:91
'Where is Abel your brother?' you said,
7:92
'Am I my brother's keeper?' From which it is plain that he came to this deed knowing full well what he did.
7:93
So then, just as this man knew even before the experience that murder is evil, but learned it more clearly afterward as well, when he received his punishment and heard:
7:94
「你必在地上流離飄蕩,唉哼戰兢」的時候;
'Groaning and trembling shall you be upon the earth';
7:95
in the same way the father of this man also had the knowledge of good and evil even before he ate, though not so clearly as after the eating of the tree.
7:96
我這是甚麼意思呢?因為我們眾人在行惡以前就已知道諸惡,但在行了之後就學得更清楚了;
What do I say? For we all know evils even before we do them, but we learn them more clearly after we have done them;
7:97
and far more clearly still when we are punished.
7:98
照樣,該隱在此以前也早已知道殺害弟兄是惡的;
Thus Cain too knew, even before this, that fratricide is evil;
7:99
但後來他藉著所受的懲罰更清楚地學會了;
but afterward he learned it more clearly through his chastisement;
7:100
既然我們在經歷之前,也知道健康是好的、疾病是難受的;
since we too know, even before experience, that health is good and sickness burdensome;
7:101
but far more so when we fall into sickness, then we recognize the difference between the two.
7:102
亞當也是照樣,知道順從是善的、悖逆是惡的;
In the very same way Adam too knew that obedience is good and disobedience evil;
7:103
but afterward he learned it more clearly, when, having tasted of the tree, he was cast out of paradise and fell from that blessedness.
7:104
因此,他既因神雖已禁止、他卻嘗了那樹的果子而陷入刑罰,這刑罰便藉著親身經歷更清楚地教導了他:違背神是何等大的惡,順從神又是何等大的善;
Since, then, he fell into punishment because, though God forbade it, he tasted of the tree, the punishment instructed him more clearly through experience how great an evil it is to disobey God, and how great a good it is to obey;
7:105
for this reason the tree is called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
7:106
And for what reason, if the nature of the tree itself did not possess the knowledge of good and evil, but rather man learned this more clearly from the punishment that came through the disobedience concerning the tree, is the tree called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Because it is the custom of Scripture, when a thing has come to pass, whether in places or in seasons, to name both the places and the seasons from those things.
7:107
And that what is said may become clearer, I will make this plain to you by an example.
7:108
以撒曾經挖井;
Isaac once dug wells;
7:109
那些鄰人卻圖謀毀壞這些井;
these wells the neighbors attempted to destroy;
7:110
由此就生出一種仇恨,他便給那井起名叫「仇恨」;
from this there arose a certain enmity, and he called the well 'Enmity';
7:111
not because the well itself bore enmity, but because the enmity arose concerning it.
7:112
So too the tree is called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, not because it itself possessed knowledge, but because concerning it took place the testing of the knowledge of good and evil.
7:113
又如亞伯拉罕挖了一口井,亞比米勒卻設謀害他;
Again, Abraham dug a well, and Abimelech plotted against him;
7:114
他們聚在一處,止息了仇恨,彼此起了誓,就給那井起名叫「起誓的井」(別是巴);
they came together, put an end to the enmity, and, having given oaths to one another, they called that well 'the Well of the Oath';
7:115
not because the well swore, but because the oath took place concerning the well.
7:116
Do you see how it is not the places that are the causes of the events, even though they receive their names from the events? For there is great need to bring forward examples, so that what is said may become clearer.
7:117
Again, Jacob saw angels meeting him and a camp of God, and he called the place 'Camp' (Mahanaim).
7:118
And yet the place was not the camp; nevertheless the place was called 'Camp,' because there he saw the camp.
7:119
Do you see how he named the place from the thing that happened in the place? So too the tree is called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, not because it itself possessed the knowledge of good and evil, but because concerning it took place the demonstration of the knowledge of good and evil, and the training of disobedience and obedience.
7:120
Πά.
Again, Jacob saw God, as far as it was possible for a man to see, and he called the name of that place 'the Vision of God' (Peniel).
7:121
And indeed the place was not the vision of God, but the appellation came from the thing that happened in the place.
7:122
Do you see by how many instances it has been demonstrated that it is the custom of Scripture
7:123
to name the places themselves from the things that happen in the places? And this same thing it is accustomed to do also in the case of seasons.
7:124
But lest we weary you, come, let us transfer our discourse from the more sombre matters to the more cheerful.
7:125
因為你們的心思停留在這些較為精微的思想上,已經困倦了;
For your minds have grown weary, dwelling upon these subtler thoughts;
7:126
wherefore it is good to give it rest, letting it feed upon simpler and more cheerful thoughts.
7:127
Let us return, then, to the saving wood of the cross.
7:128
因為正是這木,正是這木,解除了那另一棵樹所引進的一切禍患;
For this, this it is that has undone all the terrible things which that other tree brought in;
7:129
or rather, it was not that tree which brought in the terrible things, but man who brought them all in; all of which Christ afterward undid with great abundance, bringing in good things far greater than they.
7:130
For this very reason Paul says:
7:131
「罪在哪裡增多,恩典就更加洋溢了」;
'Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound';
7:132
that is to say, the gift is greater than the trespass.
7:133
'Not as the trespass, so also is the free gift';
7:134
神所施的恩典,並不是按著人所犯的罪的分量而施的;
not in proportion to how much man sinned did God bestow His grace;
7:135
那救贖的作為,並不是與那損失相等;
not as great as the loss, so great was the transaction;
7:136
那利益的收獲,並不是與那船難相等;
not as great as the shipwreck, so great was the merchandise;
7:137
乃是那美善多過那諸惡;
but the good things were more than the evils;
7:138
因為那些禍患是奴僕所引進的,故此較小;
for the evils a servant brought in, and they were lesser;
7:139
but the good things the Master bestowed, wherefore they were also greater.
7:140
'Not as the trespass, so also is the free gift.'
7:141
Then he adds also the difference:
7:142
'For the judgment came of one unto condemnation, but the free gift is of many trespasses unto justification.'
7:143
所說的這話較為隱晦;
What is said is rather obscure;
7:144
therefore it is necessary to add the explanation.
7:145
「那審判」,就是那懲罰、那刑罰、那死亡;
'The judgment,' that is, the chastisement, the punishment, death;
7:146
「由一」,就是由一項罪;
'of one,' that is, of one sin;
7:147
他說,因為一項罪就引進了如此大的惡;
for one sin, he says, brought in so great an evil;
7:148
but the free gift did not loose that one sin only, but many others as well.
7:149
'But the free gift is of many trespasses unto justification.'
7:150
For this reason John the Baptist also cried out:
7:151
'Behold the Lamb of God' — not, 'who takes away the sin of Adam,' but, 'who takes away the sin of the world.'
7:152
Do you see how the free gift is not as the trespass, but this tree brought in far greater blessings than the evils introduced at the beginning? IV
7:153
But I have said these things so that you may not think you are being wronged on account of the first man.
7:154
The devil cast out Adam; Christ brought in the thief.
7:155
那一位所趕出去的,是一個並無罪過、只有一點悖逆污點的人;
The one cast out the man who had no sin, but only a single stain of disobedience;
7:156
but Christ thus brought into paradise a thief who bore ten thousand loads of sins.
7:157
Is this, then, the only marvel — that He brought a thief into paradise — and nothing more? There is yet another and greater thing to say.
7:158
因為他不但領進了一個強盜,更是在全天下的人之先、在眾使徒之先領他進去的;
For He did not merely bring in a thief, but brought him in before the whole inhabited world, and before the apostles;
7:159
so that no one who comes after may despair of entering, nor lose hope of his own salvation when he sees one laden with countless evils moving about in the royal courts.
7:160
But let us see whether perhaps the thief displayed labors and good deeds and fruits.
7:161
Not even this can be said; rather, by a bare word, by faith alone, he leaped into paradise before the apostles, that you may learn that it was not so much his own gratitude that availed, as it was the Master's love for mankind that accomplished the whole.
7:162
這強盜說了什麼?他又作了什麼?他禁食了嗎?他哭泣了嗎?他撕裂衣服了嗎?他經過長久的時日顯出悔改了嗎?都沒有;
For what did the thief say? What did he do? Did he fast? Did he weep? Did he rend his garments? Did he show repentance over a long time? By no means;
7:163
but upon the very cross, after the sentence, he obtained salvation:
7:164
from the cross to heaven, from condemnation to salvation.
7:165
What, then, were those words? How great is their power, that they brought him such blessings? 'Remember me,' he says, 'in Your kingdom.'
7:166
這又如何呢?他求的是領受美善,並沒有顯出什麼藉著行為而有的殷勤;
And what of this? He asked to receive blessings; he did not display any zeal shown through works;
7:167
but He who knew his heart attended not to the words, but to the disposition of his mind.
7:168
因為那些享受過先知教訓、看見過神蹟、目睹過奇事的人,論到基督卻說:「他是被鬼附著的」等等的話;
For those who had enjoyed the teachings of the prophets, who had seen the signs, who had beheld the miracles, said concerning Christ, 'He has a demon,' and the like;
7:169
but the thief, who had heard no prophets, who had seen no miracles, seeing Him nailed upon the cross, gave no heed to the dishonor, saw not the ignominy, but looking to His very Godhead, said, 'Remember me in Your kingdom.'
7:170
This is a new and marvelous thing.
7:171
你看見的是十字架,卻思念起國度來?你看見了什麼配得國度的事?一個被釘十字架的人,被人打耳光、被戲弄、被控告、被吐唾沫、被鞭打;
You see a cross, and you are mindful of a kingdom? What did you see worthy of a kingdom? A crucified man, buffeted, mocked, accused, spat upon, scourged;
7:172
are these things, then, worthy of a kingdom, tell me? Do you see that he beheld with the eyes of faith, and did not scrutinize the outward appearances? For this reason neither did God examine the bare words, but just as this man looked to the Godhead, so God looked into the heart of the thief, and says:
7:173
'Today you shall be with Me in paradise.'
7:174
For no ordinary question arises here.
7:175
For the Manichaeans too, those dogs, dumb and raving, display an outward show of gentleness, but within they hold the fierce madness of dogs, and hide the wolf beneath the sheep's skin.
7:176
But do not look at the outward appearance; rather, examine the beast hidden within.
7:177
These men, then, laying hold of this passage, say:
7:178
「我實實在在地告訴你,今日你要同我在樂園裡了」;
'Verily, verily I say to you, today you shall be with Me in paradise';
7:179
therefore the recompense of blessings has already taken place, and the resurrection is superfluous.
7:180
For if on that day the thief received the blessings, but his body has not risen even to this day, then there will be no future resurrection of bodies.
7:181
Have you grasped what was said, or is it necessary to say it a second time? 'Verily, verily I say to you, today you shall be with Me in paradise.'
7:182
他們說,那麼這強盜進了樂園,並不是連身體一同進去的;
The thief, then, they say, entered into paradise not with his body;
7:183
for how could he, seeing that his body was not buried, nor dissolved and turned to dust? And nowhere is it said that Christ raised him up.
7:184
But if He brought in the thief, and he enjoyed the blessings apart from his body, it is plainly evident that there is no resurrection of the body.
7:185
For if there were a resurrection of the body, He would not have said:
7:186
'Today you shall be with Me in paradise,' but, 'at the time of the consummation, when there shall be a resurrection of bodies.'
7:187
But if He has already brought in the thief, while his body remained outside in corruption, it is plainly evident that there is no resurrection of bodies.
7:188
但如今你們也要領受我們所說的——或者說,不是我們所說的,乃是那出於神聖經所說的;
But now receive also what comes from us — or rather, not what comes from us, but what comes from the divine Scripture;
7:189
for we do not speak our own things, but the things of the Holy Spirit.
7:190
你說什麼?肉體不與冠冕有分嗎?難道它在勞苦上有分,在賞賜上卻被剝奪嗎?當需要爭戰的時候,它承擔了較多的汗水;
What do you say? Does the flesh not share in the crowns? But did it share in the labors, yet is defrauded of the rewards? And when it was necessary to contend, it received the greater share of the sweat;
7:191
but when the time of crowns comes, is the soul alone crowned? Do you not hear Paul saying that 'we must stand before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or evil'? Do you not hear him saying again:
7:192
「這必死的總要變成不死的,這必朽壞的總要變成不朽壞的」嗎?那必死的是什麼?是靈魂,還是身體?顯然是身體;
'This mortal must put on immortality, and this corruptible must put on incorruption'? The mortal — what is it? The soul, or the body? It is plainly evident that it is the body;
7:193
for the soul is by nature immortal, but the body is by nature mortal.
7:194
但他們把這些經文刪去了許多;
But they cut away many of these passages;
7:195
yet even from the very passages left remaining we shall prove the kinship of those that were cut away.
7:196
'The thief entered into paradise,' he says.
7:197
And what of this? Are these, then, the blessings which God promises us? V
7:198
你沒有聽見保羅論到那些美善說什麼嗎?「神為愛他的人所預備的,是眼睛未曾看見,耳朵未曾聽見,人心也未曾想到的」;
Do you not hear what Paul says concerning those blessings? 'Things which eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and which have not entered into the heart of man';
7:199
然而那樂園,卻是亞當的眼睛看見過的,耳朵聽見過的,人心也領受過的;
but paradise both Adam's eye saw, and his ear heard, and the heart of man received;
7:200
因為我們這許多日子所講論的,正是論到這樂園;
for it is about this that we have been discoursing so many days;
7:201
那麼這強盜怎樣領受了那美善呢?因為神所應許的,並不是要領我們進樂園,乃是要進到天上本身;
how, then, did the thief receive the blessings? For God does not promise to bring us into paradise, but into heaven itself;
7:202
nor did He proclaim a kingdom of paradise, but a kingdom of the heavens.
7:203
'For He began,' it says, 'to proclaim and to say:
7:204
for it is at hand' — not the kingdom of paradise, but the [kingdom of the heavens].
7:205
For you lost paradise, but God gave you heaven, that He might both display His own love for mankind, and might bite the devil, showing that even if he should plot ten thousand things against the race of men, he shall gain nothing thereby, God ever leading us up to a greater honor.
7:206
這樣,你失去了樂園,神卻為你開了天;
You lost paradise, then, and God opened heaven to you;
7:207
you were condemned to a temporary toil, and were honored with eternal life.
7:208
He commanded the earth to bring forth thorns and thistles, and your soul brought forth for you the fruit of the Spirit.
7:209
Do you see how the gain is greater than the loss? How the wealth is more abundant? I mean something like this:
7:210
God formed man from earth and water, and set him in paradise.
7:211
He who was formed did not prove useful, but was perverted.
7:212
所以他不再用泥土和水重造他,乃是用水和聖靈;
No longer, then, does He form him again from earth and water, but from water and the Spirit;
7:213
and no longer does He promise him paradise, but a kingdom of the heavens.
7:214
For when Nicodemus the ruler of the Jews had fallen away, and was seeking the birth that is here below, saying that it is impossible for an old man to be born from above, see how Christ more clearly reveals to him the manner of the birth.
7:215
'Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of the heavens.' If, then, He promised a kingdom of the heavens, but brought the thief into paradise, He has not yet rendered to him the blessings.
7:216
But they say yet something else against this.
7:217
'Paradise here,' they say, 'He did not mean paradise, but by the name of paradise He named the kingdom of the heavens.'
7:218
For since He was conversing with a thief, a man who had heard nothing of the lofty doctrines, nor knew anything about prophecy, but had spent all his time in the wilderness, and had committed murders, and had never so much as peeped into a church, nor partaken of divine instruction, nor knew what the kingdom of the heavens ever was — for this reason He said:
7:219
'Today you shall be with Me in paradise.'
7:220
By the more familiar and customary name of 'paradise' He signifies the kingdom of heaven, and it is concerning that kingdom that Christ speaks to him.
7:221
Therefore, he says, the thief entered into the kingdom of heaven.
7:222
Whence is this clear? From what Christ said: 'Today you shall be with Me in paradise.'
7:223
But if this solution seems too forced, we shall bring forward a clearer one.
7:224
What then is it? Christ said: 'He who does not believe in the Son is already condemned.'
7:225
怎麼說呢?他已經被定罪了嗎?然而復活尚未來到,刑罰與報應也尚未臨到;
What then? Is he already condemned? And yet the resurrection has not yet come, nor punishment and retribution;
7:226
how then is he already condemned? By reason of his sin.
7:227
And again: 'He who believes in the Son,' He says, 'has passed from death into life.'
7:228
祂並沒有說「將要出死入生」,而是說「已經出死入生了」;
And He did not say 'shall pass,' but 'has already passed';
7:229
and this man again by reason of his good deed, and that other again by reason of his sin.
7:230
所以,正如那人雖尚未受審卻已被定罪,這人雖尚未過去卻已出死入生,基督乃是憑那一位的善行、憑這一位的罪而說話,論到那些尚未成就的事,如同已經成就了一般;
As therefore that man is condemned though not yet being judged, and this man has passed into life though not yet having passed over — and Christ speaks to the one on the ground of his good deed and to the other on the ground of his sin, discoursing of things as already accomplished which are not yet accomplished —
7:231
so also He spoke to the thief.
7:232
For physicians too, when they see someone given up as hopeless, say that he has already died and is a corpse, even though they see him still breathing.
7:233
然而正如那人既無得救的指望,在醫生眼中便算是「死了」;
But just as that man, since he has no hope of recovery, is 'dead' in the eyes of the physicians,
7:234
so also the thief, since he no longer had any expectation of turning back to perdition, has entered into heaven.
7:235
So too Adam heard: 'In the day that you eat of the tree, you shall surely die.'
7:236
怎麼呢,他就在那日死了嗎?絕非如此;
What then, did he die on that very day? By no means;
7:237
rather he lived nine hundred years and more after that day.
7:238
How then did God say, 'In that same day you shall die'? By the sentence pronounced, not by the actual experience.
7:239
In this same way the thief also entered into heaven.
7:240
且聽保羅怎麼說,他表明無論何人都尚未領受那美善事物的賞報;
Hear then what Paul says, making clear that no one has yet received the recompense of good things;
7:241
for discoursing concerning the prophets and the righteous, he added:
7:242
'These all died in faith, not having received the promises,'
7:243
'but having seen them from afar and greeted them, God having provided some better thing concerning us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.'
7:244
你們要持守這些事,並要記念,也要教導那些未曾聽見的人;
Hold fast to these things, and remember them, and teach those who have not heard;
7:245
let each one meditate upon these things both in church, and in the marketplace, and in the home.
7:246
For nothing is sweeter than the hearing of divine words.
7:247
Hear then what the Prophet says concerning this:
7:248
'How sweet are Your words to my throat, more than honey and the honeycomb to my mouth!'
7:249
Set out this honeycomb, then, upon your evening table, so as to fill it wholly with spiritual delight.
7:250
Do you not see how the wealthy among men, after their meals, bring in harpists and flute-players? They make their own house a theater; but you, make your house a heaven —
7:251
and you will do this, not by changing the walls, nor by remodeling the foundations, but by inviting the very Master of the heavens to your table.
7:252
God is not ashamed of such banquets.
7:253
因為凡有屬靈教訓的地方,那裡也就有節制、莊重與溫良;
For where there is spiritual teaching, there also are self-control, and dignity, and gentleness;
7:254
where husband and wife and children are, and concord and friendship, and those bound together by the bonds of virtue, there is Christ in the midst.
7:255
For He seeks not a golden roof, nor the gleam of columns, nor the beauty of marbles, but the loveliness of the soul, and the comeliness of the mind, and a table laden with righteousness and bearing the fruits of mercy.
7:256
And if He sees such a table, He quickly shares in the gathering and comes to it.
7:257
For He it is who said:
7:258
'You saw Me hungry, and you fed Me.'
7:259
When, therefore, you hear a poor man crying out loudly from below, and then from the food set before you give something to the one in need, you have invited the Master through His servant to your table, you have filled it wholly with blessings, and through this firstfruit you have prepared a mighty occasion for your storehouses to be multiplied with many good things.
7:260
願賜平安的神,就是那賜糧食給人吃、賜種子給撒種之人的,多多加增你們所撒的種,並在你們眾人中間增添你們公義的果子,賜下祂那裡來的恩典,又使你們配得天國;
And may the God of peace, who gives bread for food and seed to the sower, multiply your sowing and increase the fruits of your righteousness in you all, granting the grace that is from Him, and may He count you worthy of the kingdom of heaven;
7:261
which may it be that we all attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom be glory to the Father and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
