1:2935
'And all his brothers and all his sisters,' he says, 'heard of all that had befallen him, and came to him, and all who had known him before this.'
1:2936
'And having eaten and drunk with him, they comforted him, and marveled at all the evils which the Lord had brought upon him.'
1:2937
'And each one gave him a ewe-lamb, and a piece of unstamped gold weighing four drachmas.'
1:2938
A token and sign of the change.
1:2939
For men are accustomed to honor the one who has been honored by God, just as by a king.
1:2940
And all things had been changed for him, and—
1:2941
And there are born to him, it says, seven sons and three daughters.
1:2942
Then it gives their names as well, which he perhaps assigned from the things that had befallen him, naming them Day, Cassia, and Amaltheia's Horn.
1:2943
Then it speaks also concerning the kings, and that this man was the fifth from Abraham.
1:2944
The Jews were still in Egypt, and were presently about to go up; so that, had they been willing, they would have found no small kindling of piety here.
1:2945
For if even now the remains are pointed out, much more would they have been shown at that time, when the events were fresh; and the magnitude of what had happened, and all who were in Arabia, would have known it.
1:2946
These things, then, we have spoken as briefly as may be.
1:2947
But it is open to anyone who wishes, if he goes through the matters set before him with diligence, to discover something even more than what has been said by us.
1:2948
For, as it says, 'Give occasion to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser.'
1:2949
Let each one of those who read, therefore, looking as it were upon some original portrait to this noble athlete, imitate his manliness and emulate his patient endurance; that, having walked the same road as he, and having drawn up boldly against all the devices of the devil, he may be able to attain the good things promised to those who love God,
1:2950
by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honor to the Father, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
