'And concerning these things I will that you affirm confidently, that they who have believed in God may be careful to maintain good works.'
6:2
'These things are good and profitable unto men.'
6:3
「要遠避那些愚拙的辯論、家譜、紛爭,以及因律法而起的爭競;
'But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law;
6:4
for they are unprofitable and vain.'
6:5
「分門結黨的人,警戒過一兩次,就要棄絕他;
'A man that is a heretic after a first and second admonition reject;
6:6
knowing that such a one is subverted, and sins, being self-condemned.'
6:7
Having spoken concerning the love toward man of God and concerning his unspeakable tender care for us, and what we were and what he made us, he goes on and says:
6:8
'And concerning these things I will that you affirm confidently, that they who have believed in God may be careful to maintain good works;'
6:9
that is, to discourse upon these things, and by means of them to urge them on to almsgiving.
6:10
For not only will the things that have been said fit us for humility, and for not being lifted up and reproaching others, but also for every other virtue.
6:11
Thus at any rate, discoursing also to the Corinthians, he says:
6:12
'You know that the Lord became poor, though he was rich, that we by his poverty might become rich.'
6:13
他既思想了神的眷顧之愛,以及他向人那超乎尋常的慈愛,便勸勉他們去行施捨,並且並非隨隨便便、輕描淡寫地勸勉;
Having considered God's tender care and his surpassing love toward man, he urges them on to almsgiving, and that not lightly nor in passing;
6:14
but what? 'That they may be careful,' he says, 'to maintain good works;'
6:15
意思就是:既要幫助受屈之人,不單用錢財,也用庇護扶持,又要為寡婦孤兒伸冤護衛,並使一切受苦的人都得安穩;
that is, both to help those who are wronged, not with money only, but also with protection, and to defend widows and orphans, and to establish all those who are suffering ill in safety;
6:16
for this is what it means to 'maintain good works.'
6:17
'For these things,' he says, 'are good and profitable unto men.'
6:18
「要遠避那些愚拙的辯論、家譜、紛爭,以及因律法而起的爭競;
'But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law;
6:19
for they are unprofitable and vain.'
6:20
What is the meaning of these genealogies? For indeed in the Epistle to Timothy also he sets down this same thing, saying:
6:21
'and endless genealogies.'
6:22
Perhaps here as there he is hinting at the Jews, who, priding themselves greatly on having Abraham for their forefather, neglected their own conduct.
6:23
因此,他稱這些家譜為愚拙而無益的;
For this reason he calls these genealogies both foolish and unprofitable;
6:24
for it is folly to place one's confidence in things that bring no profit.
6:25
但他說「爭辯」——是指與異端者的爭辯——好使我們不至於在毫無益處時徒然勞苦;
But he says, 'strifes' — meaning those with the heretics — that we may not toil in vain when there is no gain to be had;
6:26
因為當一個人已被敗壞,且無論發生甚麼事都決意不改變其心意時,你為何要徒然勞苦、撒種在磐石上呢?你本當把這美好的勞苦花在你自己的人身上,向他們講論施捨與其餘的美德。那麼他為何在別處說「或者神賜他們悔改的心」,而在此處卻說「異端的人,警戒過一兩次,就要棄絕他,因為知道這等人已經背道,犯了罪,自己明知不是仍要去做」呢?在那處,他是論到那些尚有指望之人的糾正,以及那些單純起而反對之人;
For when a man is perverted, and is resolved not to change his mind no matter what happens, why do you toil in vain, sowing upon rocks, when you ought rather to expend this noble labor upon your own people, discoursing to them concerning almsgiving and the rest of virtue? How then does he say elsewhere, 'if peradventure God will give them repentance,' but here, 'A man that is a heretic after the first and second admonition reject, knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself'? There indeed he speaks concerning the correction of those who have hope, and concerning those who simply set themselves in opposition;
6:27
but when a man is manifest and evident to all, why do you box the air in vain? Why do you beat the air? What does 'being condemned of himself' mean? For he cannot say that no one told him, no one admonished him.
6:28
When therefore after the exhortation the same man persists, he becomes self-condemned.
6:29
'When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis.'
6:30
What are you saying? Having set him over Crete, do you call him back again to yourself? Not that you are drawing him away from that ministry, but rather to give him further training.
6:31
For that it is not in order to lead him about and have him following him everywhere that he calls him to himself, hear what he says:
6:32
'For there I have determined to winter.'
6:33
Now Nicopolis is a city of Thrace.
6:34
'Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.'
6:35
這些人尚未列在受託承擔職分之人的行列中,而是在陪伴他的人當中;
These men were not yet among those to whom charge had been committed, but among those who accompanied him;
6:36
and Apollos was the more forceful of the two, being mighty in the Scriptures, and an eloquent man.
6:37
If then that man was a lawyer, he ought not, one might say, to have been supported by others.
6:38
但他在此所說的「律法師」,是指精通猶太律法的人;
But by 'lawyer' he here means one skilled in the Jewish laws;
6:39
as if he had said, Establish them in all abundance, that nothing may be wanting to them.
6:40
'And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.'
6:41
'All they that are with me salute thee;'
6:42
'greet them that love us in the faith.'
6:43
He means either those who love him, or the faithful men.
6:44
那麼,若在這等人竭力自取滅亡時我們必須避開他們,你為何又吩咐提多堵住那些反駁之人的口呢?他說,就那直接關乎他們自身益處的事而言,永不要如此行;
How then do you bid him stop the mouths of the gainsayers, if we must avoid these men when they do everything to their own ruin? He says, then, that in what pertains directly to their own gain he is never to do this;
6:45
for they would never gain any benefit, once they are perverted in mind.
6:46
因為他們若是在傷害別人,就當與他們分別、與他們爭戰,並以極大的勇氣避開他們;
For if they are injuring others, one must stand apart and contend, and with much courage avoid them;
6:47
but if you are brought to a necessity, seeing others being corrupted, do not keep silent, but stop his mouth, taking thought for those who are about to perish.
6:48
But in general it is not possible for one who is diligent and of upright life to endure strife.
6:49
不過,正如我所說的,你要這樣行;
Nevertheless, as I said, do thus;
6:50
for it is from idleness and superfluous cleverness that this thing arises, namely being occupied about mere words.
6:51
For to utter superfluous things is a great loss, when one ought either to teach, or to pray, or to give thanks.
6:52
因為我們不當愛惜錢財,卻不愛惜言語;
For we ought not to be sparing of money but lavish of words;
6:53
but rather of these or of those, and not simply to give ourselves up to all men.
6:54
「叫他們留心行善」是甚麼意思呢?意思是叫他們不要等候有需要的人來找他們,反倒要親自去尋訪那些需要他們幫助的人;
What does 'that they may be careful to maintain good works' mean? That they may not wait for those in need to come to them, but may themselves seek out those who need their help;
6:55
因為那真正留心的人,正是這樣留心的;
for he who is careful is careful in this way;
6:56
for thus especially and with much diligence will he accomplish this.
6:57
因為在他所行的善事上,這行為所帶來的收益與益處,與其說是歸給那受惠的人,不如說是歸給那行善的人;
For indeed in the good he does, the deed brings gain and profit not so much to those who receive as to those who do good;
6:58
for it gives them boldness toward God.
6:59
But there is no end to strife of that kind.
6:60
By 'heretic,' then, he means the man who is incorrigible.
6:61
For just as to overlook those who have hope of a change belongs to sloth,
6:62
so also to attempt to heal those who are incurably diseased belongs to folly and the utmost madness; for we only make such men the bolder.
6:63
'And let ours also learn,' he says, 'to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.'
6:64
Do you see that he takes thought for them rather than for those who receive? For it was perhaps possible to send these men forward with provision from many other sources; but 'I take thought,' he says, 'for our own people.'
6:65
因為,請告訴我,那有甚麼益處呢?因為即使有別人挖掘埋藏的財寶來供養那些教師,這對他們自己仍毫無益處;
For what benefit would there be, tell me? For if others were to feed the teachers by digging up buried treasures, there would as yet be no gain to these;
6:66
What then, tell me? Was not Christ able—He who from five loaves fed five thousand, and from seven fed four thousand—to feed Himself and those who were with Him? Why then was He supported by women? (For women followed Him, it says, who ministered unto Him.) It was to teach us from the first that He takes thought for those who do good.
6:67
保羅豈不能嗎?他親手作工,甚至供給別人的需用,難道不能一無所取嗎?然而你看見他既領受,也求討;
Was not Paul able—he who by his own hands even supplied the needs of others—to take nothing from anyone? Yet you see him both receiving and asking;
6:68
'For I seek not,' he says, 'the gift, but the fruit that aboundeth to your account.'
6:69
And in the beginning too, when they sold all their possessions and laid them at the feet of the apostles, you see the apostles taking thought for them rather than for those who received. For if in any way they had merely been taking thought for the poor, they would have made no account concerning Sapphira and Ananias when they kept back the money, nor would Paul have given the direction, saying:
6:70
'Not grudgingly, or of necessity.'
6:71
保羅啊,你在說甚麼?你是在攔阻窮人嗎?他說,不是的;
What are you saying, Paul? Are you putting a hindrance in the way of the poor? No, he says;
6:72
for I look not to their interest, but to that of the givers.
6:73
你也要留意那先知:當他向尼布甲尼撒獻上那極美的勸告時,他所顧念的並非單是窮人;
And observe the prophet also, when he counseled Nebuchadnezzar that excellent counsel, taking thought not for the poor alone;
6:74
for he did not say simply, Give to the poor, but what? 'Redeem thy sins by almsdeeds, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor.'
6:75
Empty out thy wealth, he says, not only that others may be fed, but that thou thyself mayest be delivered from punishment.
6:76
'Sell thy possessions, and give to the poor, and come, follow me.'
6:77
Do you see that there too this was enjoined for the sake of the following? For since wealth is a hindrance, on this account He commanded it to be given to the poor, training the soul to be merciful and compassionate, training it to despise riches, training it to depart from covetousness.
6:78
For he who is trained to give to him who has not, will in time be trained also not to take from those who have.
6:79
This makes us like unto God.
6:80
誠然,童身所需的勞苦比施捨更為艱難,禁食與臥於土地也是如此;
And yet virginity involves a harder toil than this, as do fasting and sleeping on the ground;
6:81
然而沒有甚麼像施捨那樣有力而剛強,足以撲滅我們罪孽的火焰;
but nothing is so strong and mighty to quench the flame of our sins as almsgiving;
6:82
it is greater than all these, and sets those who love it beside the King Himself.
6:83
因為童身、禁食與臥於土地,只圍繞著那實行之人本身,卻未曾拯救任何別人;
For virginity and fasting and sleeping on the ground stand only about the one who practices them, and have saved no other;
6:84
但施捨卻是向眾人延伸的,並且擁抱基督的肢體;
but almsgiving is extended unto all, and embraces the members of Christ;
6:85
and the good deeds extended toward many are far greater than those which are confined to a single person.
6:86
因為這乃是愛的母親——就是那標誌著基督信仰的愛,那比一切神蹟更大的愛,藉著它基督的門徒得以顯明;
For this is the mother of love—of that love which characterizes Christianity, which is greater than all the signs, by which the disciples of Christ are made manifest;
6:87
這乃是我們罪的良藥,是洗淨我們心靈污穢的皂鹼,是穩立而直達於天的梯子;
this is the medicine of our sins, the cleansing agent of the filth of our soul, a ladder fixed and reaching unto heaven;
6:88
this binds together the body of Christ.
6:89
你們願意知道這是何等大的善嗎?在使徒的日子,眾人都變賣了自己所有的,把價銀拿來給使徒,這些便分給眾人;
Do you wish to learn how great a good this is? In the days of the apostles all sold their possessions and brought the proceeds to them, which were then distributed;
6:90
For they distributed, it says, to each according as anyone had need.
6:91
Tell me, then, even apart from things to come (for let us not now raise the question of the Kingdom,
6:92
單就眼前的光景來看:究竟是誰得益更多,是領受的人,還是施予的人呢?因為那些領受的人卻發怨言,彼此爭競;
but let us look at the present) — who gain more, those who receive, or those who give? For the former murmured and quarrelled with one another;
6:93
but these had one soul.
6:94
For, it says, the heart and soul of them all was one, and grace was upon them all, and they passed their life with much profit.
6:95
Do you see that even from this those men were the gainers? Now tell me, of which company would you have wished to be — of those who cast away their own possessions and had nothing, or of those who took even what belonged to others? Behold the fruit of almsgiving!
6:96
The barriers and hindrances were taken away, and at once their souls were joined together.
6:97
The heart and soul of all was one.
6:98
So that even apart from almsgiving the mere emptying-out of one's wealth carries with it much gain.
6:99
我說這些話,是要叫那些沒有從祖先承受產業的人,不至於憂傷,也不至於灰心喪氣,好像自己比富人所有的更少似的;
But these things have been said by me so that those who have not inherited a patrimony from their forefathers may not grieve nor be downcast, as though they had less than the rich;
6:100
for they have more, if they are willing.
6:101
因為他們必以更大的甘心樂意來行施捨,正如那寡婦一樣;他們也毫無藉口去與鄰舍為仇,反倒比眾人都更自由;
For indeed they will come to almsgiving with greater readiness, like the widow, and they will have no occasion for enmity toward their neighbour, and they will be freer than all men;
6:102
no one will be able to threaten such a man with confiscation, but he is above suffering harm.
6:103
正如沒有人能迅速抓住那赤身逃跑的人,卻可以輕易擒住那些身披重衣、拖曳累贅的人;
And just as no one could quickly seize men who flee naked, whereas one might easily lay hold of those who are wrapped about with much clothing and trail it behind them;
6:104
so it is also with the rich man and the poor man.
6:105
因為那窮人縱然被捉住,也能輕易脫身逃走;
For the one, even if he be caught, will easily be able to slip away;
6:106
but the other, even if he be not caught, is entangled by his own cords — by countless anxieties, by despondencies, by fits of anger, by outbursts of passion.
6:107
這一切都把心靈埋沒了;
All these things bury the soul;
6:108
and not these only, but many other things besides, which we drag along in the train of wealth.
6:109
For indeed it is harder for the rich man than for the poor to practise moderation and to live in frugality, and harder for this one than for that to be rid of wrath.
6:110
Then, one says, will he have a greater reward? By no means.
6:111
既然他成就了那些難成的事,為何不然呢?因為這些難處乃是他自己給自己造出來的;
Why, if indeed he accomplishes what is difficult? Because he himself has contrived these difficulties for himself;
6:112
因為並沒有吩咐人要富足,反倒是相反的吩咐;
for it is not enjoined upon him to be rich, but the very opposite;
6:113
yet he prepares for himself ten thousand stumbling-blocks and hindrances.
6:114
另有些人不但捨棄了財物,還消瘦了身體的大半,如同行走窄路的人一般;
Others not only lay aside their possessions, but also waste away the greater part of their body, as men journeying by a narrow way;
6:115
but you not only do not this, but even feed the furnace of the passions and heap on yet more.
6:116
那麼,你就往那寬闊的路去吧;
Depart, then, into the broad way;
6:117
因為那條路正是接納這等人的;
for that is the way which receives such men as these;
6:118
but the narrow way receives those who are afflicted, those who are straitened, those who bear nothing except these burdens which it is possible to carry through it — almsgiving, loving-kindness, goodness, forbearance.
6:119
你若背負這些,就必能輕易進去;
If you bear these things, you will be able to enter easily;
6:120
but if you bear arrogance and the inflammation of the soul, and the burden of thorns — that is, wealth — you have need of much broad room.
6:121
For you cannot even enter into the crowd without striking others as you are borne down upon them from above, but there would be need here of much clear space.
6:122
But he who carries off gold and silver — I mean the good deeds of virtue — not only does not have his neighbours fleeing from him, but rather has them drawing near and joining themselves to him.
6:123
但若財富本身就是荊棘,那貪婪又是甚麼呢?你為何要把這貪婪帶下那裡去,好使火焰更大,將柴薪添在火上呢?難道地獄的火還不夠嗎?你且思想那三個少年人是怎樣勝過火爐的;
But if wealth itself is a thorn, what is covetousness? For what reason do you carry this down thither — that you may make the flame greater, laying fuel upon the fire? Is not the fire of Gehenna enough? Consider how the three youths overcame the furnace;
6:124
你就把那火爐當作是地獄吧;
consider that furnace to be Gehenna;
6:125
他們是在患難中被綑綁、被鎖鍊纏住,一同被扔進去的;
with affliction they were cast into it, bound and fettered together;
6:126
然而他們在其中卻尋得了極寬闊的地方;
yet within it they found much broad room;
6:127
but not so those who stood round about it from without.
6:128
只要我們肯高貴而剛強地站立,抵擋那臨到我們身上的試煉,如今也必有這樣的事發生;
Some such thing will come to pass even now, if we are willing to stand nobly and manfully against the temptations that are brought upon us;
6:129
我們若把盼望寄託在神身上,我們自己必安穩,且處於寬闊之地,而那把我們扔下去的人反倒要滅亡;
if we have our hopes set upon God, we ourselves shall be in safety and in broad room, but those who cast us in shall perish;
6:130
for he who digs a pit, it says, shall fall into it.
6:131
他們縱然綑住雙手,縱然綑住雙腳,患難卻能將其鬆開;
Even if they bind the hands, even if they bind the feet, affliction will be able to loose them;
6:132
those whom men had bound, the fire loosed.
6:133
For just as if someone were to hand over certain persons to the household servants of his friends, and these, out of respect for the friendship of their master,
6:134
敬重他們的主人,非但不加害於他們,反倒大大地尊敬他們;
reverencing their master, not only do not injure them, but even bestow upon them much honour;
6:135
火也是如此,當它認出那幾個少年人乃是自己主人的朋友時,就掙斷了他們的捆索,鬆開他們、放他們自由,甚至成了他們腳下的地面,被他們踐踏——這也是理所當然的;
so also the fire, when it recognized that those youths were friends of its own Master, both rent asunder their bonds and loosed them and let them go, and became a floor for them, and was trodden underfoot by them — and rightly so;
6:136
for it was for the glory of God that they had been cast in.
6:137
As many of us as are in afflictions, let us hold fast to these examples.
6:138
But behold, one says, those men were delivered from their affliction, whereas we are not.
6:139
這也是理所當然的,因為那些人進入火爐時,並不是以為自己必得拯救,乃是以為自己必要全然死去;
And rightly so, since those men did not enter into the furnace as men who would be delivered, but as men who would utterly die;
6:140
for hear them saying:
6:141
天上有一位神,祂必拯救我們;
There is a God in heaven, who will deliver us;
6:142
and if not, be it known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor do we worship the golden image which you have set up.
6:143
But we, as though bargaining with God over His chastisements, even set a time limit, saying:
6:144
If within such-and-such a time He does not show mercy —
6:145
For this reason we are not delivered.
6:146
亞伯拉罕當日也是如此起身前去的,並非以為要平安接回兒子,乃是以為要親手宰殺他;
Since Abraham too set out, not as one who would receive his son back safe, but as one who would slay him;
6:147
and beyond his expectation he received him back safe.
6:148
你也是這樣,當你陷入患難時,不要著急,不要急於求脫;當預備你的心志,忍耐到底,你就必快快脫離那患難;
And you too, when you fall into affliction, do not be in haste, do not hasten to be delivered; prepare your mind for all endurance, and you will be delivered quickly from the affliction;
6:149
for it is for this very reason that God brings it upon you, that He may train you.
6:150
When therefore we are trained from the outset to bear it, and are not distressed, He then relaxes it, as though the whole matter had been accomplished.
6:151
I wish to relate to you a certain story that is profitable and carries much benefit.
6:152
那是甚麼事呢?從前有一次逼迫臨到,猛烈的爭戰被煽動起來攻擊教會,有兩個人被捉拿了;
What then is it? Once, when a persecution had overtaken them and a fierce war had been kindled against the Church, two men were arrested;
6:153
and the one was ready to suffer anything whatsoever, while the other was himself also ready and courageous as to having his head cut off, but as to the other tortures he was fearful and trembling.
6:154
Behold, then, the divine dispensation.
6:155
那審判官坐堂之時,就吩咐把那預備好承受任何苦楚的人斬首;
When the judge had taken his seat, the one who was ready to suffer anything whatsoever, he ordered to have his head cut off;
6:156
but the other he hung up and tore with combs, and not once nor twice, but leading him about through all the cities.
6:157
Why then was this permitted? That he might recover through the tortures that part of his mind which had been neglected, that he might cast out all cowardice, that he might no longer be fearful nor shrinking nor trembling before the ordeal.
6:158
約瑟也是如此,當他最切望出去的時候,卻恰恰最久地留在裡面;
And Joseph too, when he was most eager to go out, then most of all remained within;
6:159
你且聽他怎樣說,我實在是從希伯來人之地被拐偷來的;
for hear him saying, I was indeed stolen away by theft out of the land of the Hebrews;
6:160
And, 'Remember me,' he says, 'before the king.'
6:161
For this reason he was left to remain there, that he might learn that one must not put one's confidence, nor place one's hope, in men, but must cast the whole of it upon God.
6:162
所以,我們既明白這些事,就當向神獻上感謝,並要行一切有益於我們的事;
Knowing these things, therefore, let us render thanks to God, and let us do all things that are conducive to our profit;
6:163
that we may attain unto the good things to come, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father be the glory, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
