but those who through the Law had grown rich in knowledge, and had been called back to a manner of life pleasing to God, thereafter willingly went astray, not receiving the Word of God, who was already known and had sojourned as among His own.
1:1022
因為就世界是被造、且是出於祂並藉著祂被引入存有這一意義而言,整個世界確實都是神自己的;
For the whole world indeed is God's own, according to the sense of its having been made, and of its having been brought forth into being from Him and through Him;
1:1023
但以某種方式說,以色列更適於被冠以「特屬」之名,並要因此承受那榮耀,這既因著眾聖先祖的揀選,也因它被稱為神眾兒女的開端與長子;
but more fittingly, in a way, will Israel be called by the title of special belonging, and will be allotted the glory thereupon, both on account of the election of the holy fathers, and because it was named the beginning and firstborn of God's children;
1:1024
for 'Israel is My firstborn son,' God says somewhere to Moses, whom indeed He again dedicated to Himself as one and choice, calling him His own people: 'Send forth My people,' He said to Pharaoh the tyrant of Egypt.
1:1025
Moreover, a true word also from the books of Moses shows that Israel belongs specially to God.
1:1026
因為經上說:「至高者將列國分開、將亞當的眾子分散的時候,就照神眾天使的數目立定列邦的疆界;耶和華的分本是祂的百姓雅各,祂產業的量繩就是以色列」——祂也眷顧了他,如同眷顧自己的產業與本分,說:「我奉差遣不過是到以色列家迷失的羊那裡去。」但既然祂不蒙接納,就把恩典轉移到外邦人;起初不認識祂的世界,如今藉悔改與信心得蒙光照,以色列卻奔回他先前被逐出的幽暗裡去;
'For when,' it says, 'the Most High divided the nations, when He scattered abroad the sons of Adam, He set the bounds of the nations according to the number of the angels of God; and the Lord's portion became His people Jacob, the lot of His inheritance Israel'—upon whom too He looked, as upon His own lot and His proper portion, saying: 'I was not sent save unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.' But since he was not received, He transfers the grace unto the Gentiles; and the world, which had known Him not in the beginning, is enlightened through repentance and faith, while Israel runs back into the darkness whence he had been cast out;
1:1027
wherefore also the Saviour said: 'For judgment I came into this world, that they which see not might see, and they which see might become blind.' 'But as many as received Him, to them gave He authority to become children of God, even to them that believe on His name.'
1:1028
A judgment truly just and befitting God!
1:1029
那長子以色列被逐了出去;
The firstborn Israel is cast out;
1:1030
for he was unwilling to abide in his intimacy with God, nor did he receive the Son as one sojourning among His own; he rejected the bestower of nobility, thrust away the giver of grace, but received the Gentiles through faith.
1:1031
所以以色列理當領受他狂妄的工價;
Therefore Israel shall fittingly receive the wages of his madness;
1:1032
他要為美善的失喪哀哭,要收取自己惡謀的苦果,被剝奪那兒子的名分;
he shall bewail the loss of good things, shall reap the bitter fruit of his own ill counsel, being stripped bare of the adoption;
1:1033
但外邦人要在因信而來的美善中歡享,要尋得那順服的輝煌賞賜,並要被移植入以色列的地位;
but the Gentiles shall luxuriate in the good things that come of faith, shall find the splendid rewards of obedience, and shall be transplanted into that other's place;
1:1034
因為一方要從本性上的野橄欖樹被砍下來,另一方要反乎本性地被接在好橄欖樹上;以色列要聽見:「禍哉!犯罪的國民,擔著罪孽的百姓,行惡的種類,敗壞的兒女;
for the one shall be cut off from the wild olive according to nature, and shall be grafted, contrary to nature, into the cultivated olive; and Israel shall hear: 'Woe, sinful nation, a people full of sins, an evil seed, lawless sons;
1:1035
你們離棄耶和華、惹動以色列的聖者發怒了」;卻有人要對基督門徒中的外邦人說:「惟有你們是被揀選的族類,是有君尊的祭司,是聖潔的國度,是屬神的子民,要叫你們宣揚那召你們出黑暗、入奇妙光明者的美德。」因為他們既藉信心接待了聖子,就領受權柄得列在神的兒女之中;
ye have forsaken the Lord and provoked the Holy One of Israel'; but one shall say to the Gentiles among the disciples of Christ: 'But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that ye may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light.' For since they received the Son through faith, they receive the authority to be ranked among the children of God;
1:1036
for He acts thus because there is in Him also the love toward the world.
1:1037
For there was no other way to escape corruption for us who had borne the image of the earthy, unless the beauty of the image of the heavenly were stamped upon us through our being called unto adoption.
1:1038
For having become partakers of Him through the Spirit, we were sealed unto likeness to Him, and we ascend to the archetypal form of the image, according to which the divine Scripture says we were also made.
1:1039
For hardly thus, having recovered the ancient beauty of our nature, and being transformed unto that divine nature, shall we be stronger than the evils that have befallen us through the transgression.
1:1040
如此,我們是因基督之故上升到那超乎本性的尊榮;然而我們也不會像祂那樣毫無差別地作神的兒子,乃是相對於祂、藉著那效法而得的恩典;
We ascend, then, unto the dignity that is above nature on account of Christ; yet we too shall not be sons of God in the very same way as He, without difference, but as compared with Him, through the grace that is by imitation;
1:1041
因為祂是聖子,乃是真正出於父的,而我們則是因祂的仁愛蒙收納為義子,在恩典的分中領受這話:「我曾說,你們是神,都是至高者的兒子。」因為那受造而為奴的受造界,是憑父的意旨與意願,僅藉一聲吩咐就被召向那超乎本性之事;
for He is Son as being truly from the Father, but we are adopted as of His loving-kindness, receiving as in the portion of grace the word: 'I said, Ye are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High.' For the created and servile creation is called to the things above nature by the bare nod and will of the Father;
1:1042
但聖子既是神又是主,祂之為神、為子,並不在乎神與父的意願之內,也不僅止於那被意願的地步;反倒祂是從父的本質中發光而出,按本性把那屬於本質的美善帶在自身之中;
but the Son, being both God and Lord, does not possess being God and Son within the wills of God and the Father, nor merely in so far as it was willed; rather, having shone forth from the very essence of the Father, He brings with Him by nature the good that is proper to it;
1:1043
and He is seen again to be Son, a true Son, being proved so by the comparison with us.
1:1044
因為那按本性者與那按收納者有別,那按真理者與那按效法者有別,而我們是按收納、按效法被稱為兒子;
For since that which is by nature holds another relation to that which is by adoption, and that which is according to truth to that which is according to imitation, and we are called sons by adoption and by imitation;
1:1045
then by nature and according to truth is He, to whom we, having become such, are set in comparison, gaining the good that is of grace in place of natural dignities.
1:1046
'Who were born not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.'
1:1047
他說:「那些藉著信基督被召得兒子名分歸神的人,已脫去了自己本性的卑賤,並如同披上華美衣袍一般,靠那尊重他們者的恩典,上升到那超乎本性的尊榮;
'Those,' he says, 'who through faith in Christ have been called unto adoption as sons of God, have put off the meanness of their own nature, and, arrayed as with a splendid garment by the grace of Him who honours them, ascend unto the dignity that is above nature;
1:1048
for they are no longer styled children of the flesh, but rather offspring of God by adoption.'
1:1049
But observe how great a security the blessed Evangelist made in his own words.
1:1050
For since he was about to say that those who had believed were begotten of God, then—lest anyone should suppose that they had truly sprung from the essence of God and the Father, and that they run into an unvarying likeness with the Only-begotten, or that the words 'From the womb before the morning star I begat Thee' should be said of Him too in a more abusive sense, and thus He also should be brought down into the nature of things made, if He be said to have been begotten of God—he necessarily devises for us the security.
1:1051
他既說明權柄是那位按本性為子者所賜給他們的,使他們得以成為神的兒女,並藉此先行帶出「立為」與「恩典」之意,於是便毫無危險地接著補上「他們是從神生的」這句話;
For having said that authority was given to them by the Son who is such by nature, that they might become children of God, and having thereby first introduced the notion of adoption and grace, he then safely adds the words, 'They were begotten of God';
1:1052
so that he might also display the greatness of the grace bestowed upon them, since God the Father, as it were, gathers into a natural kinship that which was alien to Him, and raises up the servant into a lordly nobility, on account of His fervent love toward it.
1:1053
What then, someone might perhaps ask, is the advantage, or what is the distinction, in those who believe in Christ over Israel, since Israel too is said to have been begotten of God, according to the words, 'I have begotten sons and exalted them, but they have rejected Me'? To such questions I think we must reply, first, that the Law, having only a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the realities, did not grant this to those of Israel in truth either, but rather as something written in them in type and figure until a time of correction, as it is written; a time in which those were destined thereafter to be shown forth who more fittingly and more truly call God Father, because the Spirit of the Only-begotten dwelt in them.
1:1054
as in shadows this was prefigured in that people; just as indeed we understand that circumcision in the spirit was of old foreshadowed in their flesh.
1:1055
and, to speak in sum, all that is ours was in them typically.
1:1056
但除了上述所說的以外,我們還要說:以色列人乃是藉著中保摩西,以預表的方式被召得兒子的名分;
But in addition to what has been said, we say this also: that Israel was called typically unto adoption through the mediator Moses;
1:1057
διὸ καὶ εἰς.
因此他們也如保羅所說,在雲裡海裡受洗歸了他,並從偶像崇拜中被裝備進入為奴的律法之下,那寫在字句上的誡命是藉著天使傳給他們的;
wherefore they were also baptized into him, as Paul says, in the cloud and in the sea, and were furnished for a law of bondage out of idolatry, the commandment in written letters being administered to them through angels;
1:1058
然而那些藉著對基督的信而上升得神兒子名分的人,並非受洗歸入任何一個受造之物,乃是藉著道之中保受洗歸入那聖三一自身;這道藉著與祂聯合的肉身將人性接連於自己,又因祂本性是神,便自然與生祂的父相連;
but those who through faith in Christ ascend unto the adoption of God are baptized not into any one of created things, but into the holy Trinity itself, through the mediation of the Word, who joins to Himself things human by means of the flesh that was united to Him, and is Himself naturally joined to the One who begot Him, inasmuch as He is God by nature;
1:1059
for thus the servant is brought back unto sonship, through participation in the true Son, being called and as it were raised up toward the dignity that belongs to Him by nature.
1:1060
For this very reason we are called, and are, begotten of God, we who have received the regeneration through the Spirit by faith.
1:1061
But since some rashly dare, just as against the Only-begotten, so also to speak falsely against the Holy Spirit, asserting that He is created and made, and altogether dragging Him out of the consubstantiality with God the Father, come then, let us once more set the word of the right faith against their loose-tongued babblings, and beget occasions of benefit both for ourselves and for those who will read.
1:1062
諸位啊,倘若這靈按本性既不是神,也的確不是那從神而出、屬乎祂、並因此在本質上內存於祂的靈;
For if the Spirit is neither God by nature, O ye men, nor indeed proper to Him from God, and for this reason essentially existing in Him;
1:1063
but is something other than He, and not removed from being of the same nature as things made, how are we, who were begotten through Him, said to have been begotten of God? For either we shall say that the Evangelist is altogether lying, or, if he is truthful, and it is so and not otherwise, then the Spirit will be God and of God by nature; and being counted worthy to partake of Him through faith in Christ, we are made partakers of the divine nature, and are said to have been begotten of God, and for this reason are designated gods—not merely by grace, soaring up to the glory that is above us, but as already having God dwelling and lodging within us, according to that which is written in the prophet, 'For I will dwell in them and walk about among them.' For in what manner, let those tell us who are full of such great ignorance, are we temples of God, according to Paul, having the Spirit dwelling in us, unless He is God by nature? For if He is a creature and made, for what cause does God destroy us as those who destroy the temple of God, whenever we defile the body in which the Spirit dwells—the Spirit that has the whole natural property of God the Father, and likewise of the Only-begotten? Or how shall the Savior speak truly when He says, 'If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him, and dwell in him'?
1:1064
然而住在我們裡面的正是這靈,藉著祂我們相信自己同時擁有父與子,正如約翰在他書信裡某處又說:「我們知道我們住在祂裡面、祂也住在我們裡面,是因祂賜給我們祂的靈。」但祂究竟怎能被稱為神的靈,除非祂按本性是從祂而出、在祂裡面、並因此是神?因為倘若如那些人所說,祂是受造的卻仍是神的靈,那麼就沒有甚麼能攔阻其他被造之物也被稱為神的靈了;
And yet it is the Spirit that dwells in us, and through Him we believe that we have at the same time both the Father and the Son, just as John also said somewhere again in his epistles, 'By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.' But how shall He be called the Spirit of God at all, unless He is of Him and in Him by nature, and for this reason God? For if, being, as those men say, created, He is the Spirit of God, there is nothing to prevent the other made things also from being called spirits of God;
1:1065
for the argument will by its own force reach even to them, if indeed it is at all admissible that a created essence should be the Spirit of God.
1:1066
誠然,就這些事展開一篇長篇的論述,並更詳盡地加以闡發,以推翻那些不虔異端者的愚妄,本是合宜的;
And indeed it would truly be consistent to unfold a lengthy discourse upon these matters, and to expatiate at greater length, overturning the follies of the impious heretics;
1:1067
but having already treated sufficiently concerning the Holy Spirit in our book on the holy Trinity, we shall for this very reason pass over saying much more.
1:1068
By this he has now clearly entered upon the discourse concerning the Incarnation.
1:1069
他清楚地闡明:獨生子成了、也被稱為人子;
That the Only-begotten became and was designated Son of man, he clearly sets forth;
1:1070
因為說「道成了肉身」所指的正是這事,別無其他;
for this, and nothing else, is what it means to say that the Word became flesh;
1:1071
for it is as though, in more naked terms, he had said, 'The Word became man.'
1:1072
他這樣說,並非向我們引入甚麼奇異或不尋常之事,因為神聖的經文常常僅以肉身指稱整個活物,正如先知約珥書上所記:「我要將我的靈澆灌凡有血氣的。」我們斷不會以為先知是說神聖的靈要單澆在無生命、孤立的人肉之上;
And in speaking thus he introduces nothing strange or unfamiliar to us, since divine Scripture often designates the whole living being even from the flesh alone, according to that which is written in the prophet Joel, 'I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh'; and surely we shall not suppose the prophet to mean that the divine Spirit was to be supplied to the human flesh alone, lifeless and by itself.
1:1073
因為那樣的話,所指之意便絕逃不了荒謬;他乃是以部分概括全體,從肉身而稱那人。事情本當如此,而非別樣;
for thus what is signified will by no means escape absurdity; rather, comprehending the whole from a part, he names the man from the flesh. And it was fitting that it should be so, and not otherwise;
1:1074
and for what cause, it is necessary, as it seems, to state.
1:1075
Man, then, is a living being that is rational, yet composite, consisting namely of soul and of this perishable and earthly flesh.
1:1076
但既然他是被神所造、被帶到存在中的,本身不從自己的性情而有不朽壞、不敗亡之性;
But since he had been made by God and brought forth into existence, not having from his own nature incorruptibility and imperishability;
1:1077
因為這些惟獨在本質上屬乎神;
for these belong essentially to God alone;
1:1078
他乃是被生命之靈所印記,藉著與神聖者的關係而獲得那超乎本性的美善。經上說:「祂將生命的氣息吹在他的臉上,那人就成了有生命的活物。」但當他因著違背而受懲罰,聽見「你本是塵土,仍要歸於塵土」時,這判語既公義,他便被剝去了那恩典;
he was sealed by the spirit of life, gaining the good that is above nature by his relation to the Divine. 'For He breathed,' it says, 'into his face a breath of life, and the man became a living soul.' But when, on account of the transgression, he was punished with the words, 'Earth thou art, and unto earth shalt thou return,' then, justly hearing this, he was stripped bare of the grace;
1:1079
and the breath of life departed from the earthly flesh, that is, the Spirit of Him who says, 'I am the life,' and the living being falls into death through the flesh alone, while the soul is preserved in immortality, since it was to the flesh alone that it was said, 'Earth thou art, and unto earth shalt thou return.' It was needful, therefore, that what was most in peril within us should be the more swiftly rescued, and by a renewed union with the life should be recalled, according to its nature, unto incorruption.
1:1080
It was needful that what had suffered should find a loosing of the evil.
1:1081
It was needful then that the words 'Earth thou art, and unto earth shalt thou return' should be rendered powerless, the fallen body being ineffably united to the Word who gives life to all things.
1:1082
因為祂的肉身既已成就,理當領受那從祂而來的不朽;
For it was needful that His flesh, once it had come into being, should partake of the immortality that is from Him;
1:1083
因為這實在是最荒謬不過的:火尚且能將那本性所具之作用、可感知的性質植入其所觸的材料之中,幾乎將它所進入的、有分於它的一切轉化為自身;
for it would indeed be among the most absurd things that fire should be able to implant in materials the sensible quality of the energy that naturally belongs to it, and all but transform into itself the things in which it comes to be by participation;
1:1084
yet that the Word of God, who is above all things, should by no means be thought able to work His own good, that is, life, into the flesh.
1:1085
我想,正是為著這緣故,那聖潔的福音書作者主要從那受苦的部分來指稱整個活物,說神的道成了肉身;
For this cause especially, I think, the holy Evangelist, signifying the whole living being chiefly from that which suffered, said that the Word of God became flesh;
1:1086
that one might behold at once both the wound and the remedy, the sick one and the physician, that which was bent down unto death and the One who raised it up unto life, that which was overcome by corruption and the One who drives away corruption, that which was mastered by death and the One who is mightier than death, that which was deprived of life and the Supplier of life.
1:1087
他並未說道「進入」肉身,乃說道「成了」肉身,免得你以為祂只是按某種關係臨到肉身,如同或許臨到眾先知或別的某些聖徒那樣,乃是說祂真實地成了肉身,就是成了人;
And he says not that the Word came into flesh, but that He became flesh, lest you should suppose Him to have visited it merely by relation, as perchance in the prophets or in certain others of the saints, but rather that He truly became flesh, that is, man;
1:1088
for this is what we were just now saying.
1:1089
為這緣故,祂也在肉身中、與肉身同在而按本性是神,以肉身為祂自己所有,又被看為在肉身以外的別的存在,並且在肉身之中、與肉身一同受敬拜,正如先知以賽亞書上所記:「高大的人必過來歸你,作你的僕人;他們必戴著鎖鏈跟隨你,向你下拜,在你面前祈求說:神真在你中間,此外再沒有別神。」看哪,他們也說神在祂裡面,並不將肉身與道分開;
For this reason He is also God by nature in flesh, and with flesh, having it as His own, and being conceived as something other than it, and being worshipped in it and together with it, according to that which is written in the prophet Isaiah: 'Men of stature shall come over unto thee, and shall be thy servants, and shall follow after thee bound with fetters, and shall do obeisance to thee, and shall pray in thee, for God is in thee, and there is no God besides thee.' Behold, they say that God is in Him also, not separating the flesh from the Word;
1:1090
他們又堅稱除祂以外並無別神,將那所承載的,就是那從童貞女而出的殿,作為祂自己的,與道聯合為一;
and again they affirmed that there is no God besides Him, uniting to the Word that which is borne, as His own, that is, the temple from the Virgin;
1:1091
for Christ is one out of both.
1:1092
福音書作者有益地將所說的進一步詳加闡發,把這默觀的要義引入更明晰的理解之中;
The Evangelist usefully works out further what has been said, and brings the force of the contemplation into a clearer understanding;
1:1093
他稱之為「神的道」,免得有人因大無知而以為祂逸出了自己的本性,真被變成了肉身而受苦,這乃是不可能的;
[he says] Word of God, lest anyone out of much ignorance should suppose Him to have run out of His own nature, and to have been truly changed into flesh and to have suffered, which was impossible;
1:1094
因為就其存在的方式而論,神聖者遠離一切變異、以及向別物的轉變;
for the Divine is far removed from all alteration and change into anything else, in respect to the mode of His being;
1:1095
very rightly indeed did the theologian straightway add that 'He also dwelt among us,' so that, understanding two things signified—both the One who tabernacles and that in which the tabernacling takes place—you might not suppose Him to have been turned aside into flesh, but rather to have tabernacled in flesh, using as His own body the temple from the holy Virgin.
1:1096
因為正如保羅所說:「神本性一切的豐盛,都有形有體地居住在祂裡面」;
For 'in Him dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead bodily,' as Paul says;
1:1097
他有益地堅稱道在我們中間支搭了帳幕,藉此向我們揭示這極深奧的奧祕;
and he usefully asserts that the Word tabernacled among us, thereby unveiling to us this deeply profound mystery;
1:1098
for we were all in Christ, and the common element of humanity ascends unto His person, since for this reason He was also named the last Adam, being rich, by the commonalty of nature, in all things that make for good cheer and glory, just as also the first Adam was rich in all that makes for corruption and dejection.
1:1099
The Word therefore tabernacled in all through one, so that, the one being declared Son of God in power according to the spirit of holiness, the dignity might come unto the whole of humanity, and thus through one of us the saying might reach even unto us: 'I said, ye are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High.' Accordingly, in Christ the servant is truly set free, ascending unto the mystical unity with Him who bore the form of the servant, but in us by imitation of the One, on account of the kinship according to the flesh.
1:1100
因為祂為何不救拔天使,卻救拔亞伯拉罕的後裔,以致祂必須凡事與弟兄相同,並真實地成為人呢?這豈不是眾人所明見的,就是祂降卑到奴僕的地步,這並非為自己謀取甚麼,乃是將自己賜給我們,好叫我們藉祂的貧窮成為富足,藉著與祂相似而上升到那專屬於祂的美善,並藉著信被顯明為神、為神的兒女嗎?因為那按本性為神的子在我們中間支搭了帳幕;
For, for what cause does He not take hold of angels, but of the seed of Abraham, whence He was bound in all things to be made like unto His brethren, and to become in truth man? Is it not manifest to all that He descended unto the servant's estate, procuring this thereby not for Himself, but bestowing Himself upon us, that we by His poverty might be made rich, ascending, through the likeness to Him, unto His own and peculiar good, and being manifested as gods and children of God through faith? For the Son who is by nature God tabernacled among us;
1:1101
wherefore also in His Spirit we cry, 'Abba, Father'; and the Word tabernacles, as in all, in one temple which was taken for us and from us, so that, having all in Himself, He might reconcile all in one body to the Father, just as Paul says.
1:1102
'And we beheld His glory, glory as of the Only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.'
1:1103
Having said that the Word became flesh, that is, man, and having brought Him down into brotherhood with things servile and made, he thus also preserves for Him unimpaired the dignity befitting God, and shows Him to be once more full of the paternal property that is in Him.
1:1104
For the divine nature is truly fixed upon itself, not enduring to suffer any turning aside unto anything else, but rather remaining ever the same, and standing firm in its own excellences.
1:1105
Therefore, even though the Evangelist says that the Word became flesh, yet he affirms that He was not overcome by the weaknesses of the flesh, nor did He fall away from His most ancient strength and glory, seeing that He clothed Himself with our weak and most inglorious body.
1:1106
他說:「因為我們見過祂的榮光」,那是超乎眾人獨特榮光之上的,是人所必承認合乎那從父神而出的獨生子的;
'For we saw His glory,' he says, beyond the peculiar glory of others, and such as one would confess to befit the Only-begotten Son from God the Father;
1:1107
for He was full of grace and truth.
1:1108
因為人若定睛於眾聖徒的行列,細數藉他們每一位所行的奇事,他固然會照理稱奇,並為每一位所具的美善而歡喜,並要說他們全然被那從神而來的榮耀所充滿;
For if one looks upon the choir of the saints, and reckons up the things wondrously wrought through each of them, he will indeed marvel, as is fitting, and will rejoice over the good things belonging to each, and will say that they were altogether filled with glory from God;
1:1109
[that glory] naturally passing over unto the Son who comes forth from Him.
1:1110
但若有人認為當以更廣闊的默觀來省察所說的,就讓他自己思量那藉眾聖徒每一位所行的奇事,以及那藉我們救主基督所行的事,他必發現其間的差別正如我們先前所說的那樣大;
But if it seem good to anyone to examine what has been said by broader contemplations, let him consider by himself both the things wondrously wrought through each of the saints and the things wrought through our Savior Christ, and he will find the difference to be as great as we have already said before;
1:1111
and in addition to this, consider also that:
1:1112
因為他們如同真誠的家僕在家中服事,而祂卻如同兒子治理祂自己的家;論到獨生子,神聖的經文說:「奉主名來的是應當稱頌的」;論到眾聖徒,父神卻說:「我差遣我一切的僕人眾先知到你們那裡去。」他們是從上頭借得能力,祂卻如同萬能力之主說:「我若不行我父的事,你們就不必信我;
for they are about the house as genuine household servants, but He is over His house as a son; and concerning the Only-begotten the divine Scripture says, 'Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord'; but concerning the saints God the Father says, 'And I sent unto you all My servants the prophets.' And they borrowed their power from above, but He, as Lord of the powers, says, 'If I do not the works of My Father, believe Me not;'
1:1113
我若行了,你們縱然不信我,也當信這些事。」既然如此,倘若獨生子在能力上與父自己一樣偉大,就藉這些事顯明出來,並要因祂是同等作為的工作者,而按同等的比例被榮耀所尊崇;
but if I do, even though ye believe not Me, believe the works.' If, therefore, the Only-begotten is as great in power as the Father Himself would be, He is seen by these very works, and He will be magnified with glories in equal proportion, inasmuch as He is the worker of equal deeds;
1:1114
and He will altogether surpass, even having come to be in flesh, those who were called unto brotherhood, by as much as God who is such by nature transcends men, and He who is truly the Son transcends those who are sons by adoption.
1:1115
但既然那蒙福的路加書上記著:「耶穌的智慧和恩典都增長」,在這些話上當留意:那被聖靈感動的人是說子有充滿恩典的榮光;
But since it is written in the blessed Luke, 'And Jesus advanced in wisdom and grace,' it is to be noted in these matters that the Spirit-bearing one said that the Son had glory full of grace;
1:1116
then, to what point should the full advance, or what addition should that receive beyond which there is nothing? Accordingly, it is not said that He advances in so far as He is Word and God, but that, being ever the more admired, He was shown to those who beheld to be more full of grace through His accomplished works—the disposition of those who marveled advancing rather (as it is more truly to be said) than the perfect One Himself, as God, advancing toward grace.
1:1117
And let these things be said usefully, even if the discourse is somewhat digressive.
1:1118
'John bears witness concerning Him, and cries out.'
1:1119
The most wise Evangelist again follows his own train of thought, and gracefully makes the ensuing discourse as something owed to what preceded.
1:1120
For since he had said concerning the Son of God, 'We beheld His glory, glory as of the Only-begotten from the Father,' lest he should appear to say this alone—the word 'We beheld' not befitting a single person—he joins to himself the witness of the same name, who has toward Him one and the same piety.
1:1121
祂說:「因此我作見證」;
'I therefore bear witness,' He says;
1:1122
and the Baptist likewise bears witness as well.
1:1123
A most worthy pair of Spirit-bearing men, a couple truly deserving of trust, nurtured together in truth and knowing not how to lie.
1:1124
但請看他為我們所作的講解是何等生動鮮明;
But observe how vividly he has framed the exposition for us;
1:1125
for he does not merely say that John bears witness concerning Him, but usefully adds that he also cried out, taking the proof of his statement from the words 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness.'
1:1126
For it was open to some of the adversaries to ask: When did the Baptist bear witness to the Only-Begotten, and to whom did he communicate these things? He cried out, therefore, he says — that is, he does not speak in a corner, nor does he testify quietly and in a whisper; you shall hear him crying out more clearly than a trumpet.
1:1127
'I am not the only one who heard such things,' I say; broad and open to all is the word, brilliant the herald, conspicuous the voice, great and by no means unknown the forerunner.
1:1128
'This was He of whom I said: He who comes after me has been placed before me, for He was before me.'
1:1129
(福音書作者)既已提名那位見證人——那與他同心、同名的人——又指明他曾以宏亮之聲承擔宣道的職事,便有益地又補上作見證的方式;
Having named the witness, one of the same mind and the same name as himself, and having shown that he employed a great voice for the ministry of proclamation, he usefully adds also the manner of the testimony;
1:1130
for in this above all lay the whole matter under inquiry.
1:1131
那麼,我們究竟要看見這樣一位約翰論到獨生子呼喊了什麼呢?「那在我以後來的,反成了在我以前的,因祂本來在我以前。」這話深奧,需要對其本身多加細察;
What then, indeed, shall we find such a John as this crying out concerning the Only-Begotten? 'He who comes after me has been placed before me, for He was before me.' Deep is the saying, and one that demands much scrutiny upon itself;
1:1132
for the ready and worn-out understanding held by the many happens to be something like this:
1:1133
Emmanuel, as the blessed Luke has recorded,
1:1134
some suppose John to be saying this, so that it may be understood thus: 'He who comes after me' in respect of the time of age 'has been placed before me.'
1:1135
But it is possible to see, for one who gazes more keenly into the divine contemplations, first, how the word is carried off by us into evanescent notions, and journeys far away from what must necessarily be sought.
1:1136
因為聖施洗者被引為見證人,並非要指明基督在生年上時而較後、時而又較早,而是作為曾親眼看見祂榮耀的人——那榮耀正如父獨生子的榮耀,充充滿滿地有恩典有真理。那麼,對於這樣不合時宜地闖入的敘述,人能配上什麼樣的解釋呢?或者,若把所探求的當作時間的量度——即「那在我以後來的,反成了在我以前的」——人又怎能為我們清楚地說明呢?就算承認、且是公認地承認:主是在施洗者之後而來的,因祂按肉身而言在時間上是後生的;
For the holy Baptist was brought in as a witness, not that he might point to Christ as being now later, now again earlier by the time of birth, but as one who had beheld His glory, glory as of the Only-Begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. What sort of account, then, could anyone fit to narratives that have intruded so unseasonably? Or how could anyone clearly interpret for us, taking the thing sought as a quantity of time — that is, 'He who comes after me has been placed before me'? For let it be granted, and confessedly so, that the Lord comes after the Baptist, inasmuch as He was born second in respect of the time according to the flesh;
1:1137
in what manner will He also come to be before him — before him in time, that is? For the order and sequence rightly owed in proportion to what preceded summons us to this consideration.
1:1138
但我想這對每個人都是顯而易見的:這絕不屬於可能之事;
But I think this becomes clear to everyone, that it would not be among things possible;
1:1139
for that which is later than something in time could never overtake that which precedes it.
1:1140
所以,若以為聖施洗者說「那在我以後來的,反成了在我以前的」是就按肉身的時間而言,那便是全然無知、極其站不住腳的;
Therefore it is utterly ignorant and altogether implausible to suppose that the holy Baptist spoke concerning time according to the flesh when he said, 'He who comes after me has been placed before me';
1:1141
but rather, understanding it in accordance with the aim we have set before us, we shall believe it to have been spoken somewhat as follows.
1:1142
Gracefully the blessed Baptist raises his discourse from the customary figure to a spiritual quality of things, and, as it were from some image drawn from our own affairs, proceeds to the exposition of finer conceptions.
1:1143
因為那本性適於居先的,總是比那些被說為跟隨的更受尊崇,而跟隨者則讓位於居先者;
For that which is by nature fitted to lead is somehow always wont to be more esteemed than those things said to follow, and to those that lead the things that follow give place;
1:1144
譬如一個精通鐵匠之技、或木匠之技、或織工之技的人,在某種意義上居先,並勝過那被視為以學徒身分跟隨他、正朝著完全的知識邁進之人;
as one who has perfected the craft of the smith, or perhaps of the carpenter, or of the weaver, somehow leads and holds the better place over the one conceived as following him as an apprentice and advancing toward perfect knowledge;
1:1145
but when such a one surpasses the craft of his teacher, and, leaving it behind, works the better, I suppose the one who has been surpassed will not inelegantly say concerning the disciple who has prevailed: 'He who comes after me has been placed before me.'
1:1146
因此,若按此將這奧義的意旨從比喻轉用於我們的救主基督與聖施洗者身上,你便能正確地理解;
Transferring, therefore, according to this the force of the contemplation from the figure to our Saviour Christ and to the holy Baptist, you will understand rightly;
1:1147
and receive the particulars from the beginning.
1:1148
施洗者為眾人所欽佩,收了許多門徒,一大群受洗的人環繞著他;而基督雖然更為偉大,卻不被認識,人也沒有察覺祂原是真神;
The Baptist was admired by all, he made many disciples, a great crowd of those being baptized surrounded him, while Christ, though greater, was not recognized, and it escaped notice that He was truly God;
1:1149
既然祂不被認識,而施洗者卻受人欽佩,祂便彷彿也顯得是後於他的;
and since He was unrecognized, while the Baptist was admired, He seemed somehow even to come after him;
1:1150
祂稍稍走在後面,而那另一位在人間的尊榮與榮耀上,仍佔著更大的地位;
He walked a little behind, while that other still held the greater place in respect of the honour and glory that is among men;
1:1151
but He who came after was placed before, shown to be greater and better than John.
1:1152
For the one, being already God, was revealed through His works, while the other, not rising above the measure of humanity, is found henceforth to have come after.
1:1153
Therefore the blessed Baptist said in riddling fashion, 'He who comes after me has been placed before me,' instead of 'He who was once behind my honour has appeared more glorious, and by incomparable pre-eminences outruns the measure that befits and belongs to me.'
1:1154
Understanding what was said in this way, we shall find him a witness to the glory of the Only-Begotten, and not an unseasonable expositor of idle matters.
