A proverb is such as this: 'Sweet is war to one who has not tried it,' and, 'A drop, falling continually, hollows out a rock.'
1:2
For in the beginning, when the roads were still unmarked, the ancients set up along certain places of the way what the Romans now call miles, but which were then called signs; and upon these they would inscribe certain problems for inquiry.
1:3
This they did for two reasons: both that the traveller might know the extent of the road, and that, in reading the inscription and occupying himself with its meaning, he might have his weariness lightened.
1:4
'To know words of wisdom' pertains properly to virtue, of course—just as the other translators also make plain, having rendered it not as 'words of wisdom' but 'words of understanding.'
1:5
Or, by 'words of wisdom' he means those that are sophistical and cunningly devised.
1:6
Reproving those who feign righteousness and claim to possess it as they ought, the word says:
1:7
'If then you truly speak righteousness, judge rightly, O sons of men.'
1:8
I hear of the rendering of Theodotion, which Symmachus also gave, that they rendered it 'a problem.'
1:9
What then is 'the dark saying'?
1:10
乃是在言辭、思想與表達上都混雜不清的;
It is that which is confused in word, in thought, and in expression;
1:11
such as the passage in the prophet Isaiah:
1:12
'Woe to the land of ships, beyond the rivers of Ethiopia!'
1:13
'Who sends hostages by the sea, and letters of papyrus upon the water.' For none of these has its wording clear, whether in the form of parables, nor does it present any manifest narration of history.
1:14
And of the riddle it is possible to understand the literal wording, but of the dark saying not even the literal wording.
1:15
「隱晦之言」是一個通稱;
'A dark saying' is a general term;
1:16
and 'dark' means not that which is such by privation of light, but that which is hidden, so that the one who is ignorant is darkened.
1:17
「格言」乃是措辭精美的箴語;
'Sayings' are the finely-turned apophthegms;
1:18
而「謎語」乃是在遮蔽之下指明真理的言語;
and a 'riddle' is a saying that signifies the truth under concealment;
1:19
such as this: 'Open, O Lebanon, your gates, and let fire devour your cedars.' [Zech.]
1:20
因為真正的敬畏,乃是與尊崇相稱的虔敬;
For true fear is the reverence that accords with veneration;
1:21
因為僅僅認識良善,還不足以致福,除非人也實行它;
for to know the good does not suffice for blessedness, unless one also does it;
1:22
and piety toward God is the beginning of understanding.
1:23
The Father of the righteous is God.
1:24
For everyone who does righteousness has been begotten of God.
1:25
And our Mother is the Church, whose Bridegroom is our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:26
And the ordinances are the apostolic institutions.
1:27
Even if the foregoing has an anagogical sense, yet it applies also to natural parents, when, being god-fearing, they rear their children.
1:28
Since the teacher is a man, who has begotten through the Gospel those being instructed, the Church is his consort and the mother of those born—or rather, the ecclesiastical mind and way of life.
1:29
'If then,' he says, 'you heed me, the composer of proverbs—now as your instructor and father, now in place of a mother of wisdom and virtue—you shall be crowned with a crown of graces, and your neck adorned with a collar fashioned of spiritual gold and ornament.'
1:30
For the material of the crown with which the head of the inner man is wreathed—the compass of the virtues—is what happens to be named 'graces.'
1:31
In agreement with the crown, which is spiritual, one must also understand the golden collar placed upon the neck of the soul, that is, upon its subordinate faculty.
1:32
他以「頭」與「頸」指心思;
By 'head' and 'neck' he means the mind;
1:33
以「金項鍊」指知識與魂屬靈的妝飾;
and by 'golden collar,' knowledge and the spiritual adornment of the soul;
1:34
or the golden collar is subjection to God, and the compass of the divine oracles.
1:35
Impious men, however, are those who are perfect in wickedness.
1:36
他們把那些被他們勸誘去思念地上之事的人埋藏於地;
They hide in the earth those whom they persuade to be minded toward earthly things;
1:37
but a righteous man you will understand to be the one who has a heavenly mind.
1:38
These things can also be understood with reference to Christ, and to the people of the Jews.
1:39
Scripture indicates 'utterly' by means of 'swallow up,' as in the passage:
1:40
'Lest such a one be swallowed up by excessive grief.' They say, then: 'Having cast down and vanquished the one who has a heavenly mind, let us bring him over to ourselves, so as to be minded toward earthly things.'
1:41
And he is swallowed up alive who holds a right opinion concerning what ought to be done, and then casts it away.
1:42
他以「謀算」指那決意的抉擇,我們照著它選擇去行或不行當行之事;
By 'counsel' he means the deliberate choice according to which we choose to do or not to do the things to be done;
1:43
and by 'thought' the one concerning things contemplated, so as to leave them behind and to draw near to God, keeping His commandments as far as one is able.
1:44
He who possesses the virtues as a settled habit, not slothfully neglecting them superficially—this one has them written upon the tablet of his own heart, that is, upon the depth of his own soul, or upon his continual longing, so that the adversary may not turn you aside.
1:45
我所說的「身體」,乃是魂諸能力的總集;
By 'body' I mean the assemblage of the powers of the soul;
1:46
「骨頭」,乃是魂堅固的能力;
'bones,' its firm powers;
1:47
因為「我一身的骨頭都要說」;
for 'all our bones shall say';
1:48
魂的右手乃是關乎神聖之事的知識,永生由此而來;
Its right hand is the knowledge of divine things, from which comes eternal life;
1:49
and its left hand is the knowledge of human things.
1:50
Here again he names the Cross 'the tree of life.'
1:51
因為那些真誠地與基督聯合的人,就有從那樹而來的豐盛生命滴落其上;
For upon those who are sincerely joined in Christ the manifold life from the tree drips down;
1:52
and for those who lean upon its foundations, a firm confirmation is fixed unshakably, as also for those who are securely established upon the Lord.
1:53
But if the tree of life is the wisdom of God,
1:54
then Adam was justly prevented from partaking of it.
1:55
因為「智慧必不進入設計作惡的魂裡」;
For 'into a soul that devises evil wisdom will not enter';
1:56
seeing that from the fruits of righteousness there springs up the tree of life.
1:57
Not finding to whom he might liken the one who hopes upon the Lord, he turns the discourse back upon himself, speaking as though concerning the Lord:
1:58
For he who leans upon it, inasmuch as he hopes in God, is secure.
1:59
This applies now also to the Son of God, who is the wisdom and understanding of God.
1:60
然而,那信實的魂也是一片田地,結出百倍的果子;
But the faithful soul is also a land, bearing fruit a hundredfold;
1:61
and it becomes wise from the fatness of wisdom, since God and Father founds it upon her.
1:62
因為祂在其中奠定教訓的根基,用智慧在其中造成穩固的立定,並顯明它不斷長進;
For He establishes in it the introduction of teaching, making in it a fixture out of wisdom, and showing it ever advancing;
1:63
and He fashions it a most pure heaven, a dwelling place of angels and of the intelligible substances.
1:64
And having received perception of that which is, and understanding the exactness of things—such as the great depth of the judgments of God—it called these 'clouds,' or it called the prophets 'clouds,' and the teaching 'dew.'
1:65
Do not become deprived of the drinkable water of life.
1:66
他以「謀算」指關乎當行之事的動向;
By 'counsel' he means the movement concerning things to be done;
1:67
以「思慮」指關乎默想之事的思慮;
by 'thought,' that concerning things contemplated;
1:68
by 'neck' he meant the soul itself, which has borne the yoke of the Lord.
1:69
And just as the neck is encircled by breast-bands, so the soul shall receive the rewards of God in the kingdom, as also here in this life it wears His commandments.
1:70
Of the impious, even their glorious things are accursed.
1:71
But for the righteous, even the humbler things have been blessed.
1:72
By 'house' he means the powers of the rational soul.
1:73
And by 'farmsteads,' the powers of the spirited and the appetitive parts; for in these the irrational passions have their dwelling.
1:74
For in these the irrational passions spend their time.
1:75
The honour of wisdom is the keeping of the commandments; and wisdom is Christ, whose bride is the soul that honours him through the virtues, and who shall be embraced by him.
1:76
And wisdom is Christ, whose bride is the soul that honours him through the virtues, which soul shall be embraced by him.
1:77
Just as to a little infant child, he ever sets prizes before its attentiveness, and rouses it when it has been startled and strayed somewhere outside.
1:78
And the springs of life are the virtues, from which flows the living water, which is the knowledge of Christ.
1:79
對那在智慧上長進的人而言,泉源乃是多而非只有一個;
For the one who advances in wisdom, there come to be many springs, and not one only;
1:80
but according to the multitude of the virtues.
1:81
To those, he says, who keep these exhortations, they become life.
1:82
Walk rightly, he says, in your journey through life.
1:83
The feet of the soul are its transitional impulses; for virtue is a mean.
1:84
For virtue is a mean.
1:85
Give no heed to deceitful teaching, which lures by smooth talk—that is, to heresy, to idolatry, and to empty words.
1:86
Their beauty reaches only as far as the hearing.
1:87
它慣於隱藏那毀壞人的,卻擺出那甘美的,好將人擄獲;
It is wont to hide what is destructive, and to put forward what is pleasant, so as to ensnare;
1:88
for otherwise they would at once have leapt away.
1:89
but it conceals what is pleasant, and sets forth what is laborious.
1:90
他沒有說「流走」,而是說「滴下」,好叫那苦味不致令人生膩——然而到後來卻比苦膽更苦;
And he did not say, 'It flows away,' but, 'It drips,' so that the bitterness should not become cloying—yet afterward it is more bitter than gall;
1:91
the bitterness is not in proportion to the pleasure.
1:92
他在此所說的「道路」,是指那朝向德行前行的心思;
By 'way' he here means the mind that journeys toward virtue;
1:93
or perhaps he enjoins virtue to separate us from vice.
1:94
which, by the wearing away of the flesh, signifies that licentiousness is a kind of corruption.
1:95
He introduces the man who has been corrupted reproaching himself for having hated instruction, and he says:
1:96
I would perish and be utterly ruined, having worn away my flesh in profligacy, and I all but cast away life itself.
1:97
Therefore my punishment became manifest in the midst of the Church and the Synagogue.
1:98
For it is the voice of one who has repented, and who has not become that which he came within a little of becoming.
1:99
Like it also is the saying, 'My steps had well nigh been poured out.' For having come to himself and perceived, he says, 'Where is the little that remained?' How then is it possible to comfort the madness that springs from nature?
1:100
知識既是井,也是泉;
Knowledge is both a well and a spring;
1:101
對那些初來親近眾德行的人,它是一口井;
for those who are drawing near to the virtues it is a well;
1:102
but for those who have been perfected in them, a spring.
1:103
Knowledge is also called mother, and wife, and sister:
1:104
稱為母親,因為藉著她,我們得以由教師所生;
mother, because through her we have been begotten by the teacher;
1:105
稱為妻子,因為她與我們同居,便生出眾德行與純正的教義;
wife, because dwelling with us she bears virtues and right doctrines;
1:106
sister, because we have come to be from one God.
1:107
And I called wisdom my sister.
1:108
你且看,他不僅藉那豐盈表明它的易得,更藉著在享用它時無人與己共分而表明這點;
See how he indicates its easiness not only by its abundance, but also by having no partner in the enjoyment of it;
1:109
他還將它加倍,並稱它為產業;
and he doubles it and calls it a possession;
1:110
for he knows the delight of the thing.
1:111
你甚至當效法那些無理性受造之物本性中的勤勞;
Imitate even the natural industry of the irrational creatures;
1:112
for many do good works from observation or from hearsay, and not from understanding.
1:113
他以「蜜蜂」指眾先知與眾使徒,他們的勞苦既對那些心志高大的人有益,也對那些微小的人有益;
By 'bees' he means the prophets and apostles, whose labours are useful both to those great in disposition and to the lowly;
1:114
那麼,他以「蜂蠟」指那些事物本身;
by 'wax,' then, he means the things themselves;
1:115
and by 'honey,' the contemplation of them.
1:116
Just as the bell-wether leads the goats, so does the queen-bee lead the bees.
1:117
Order, then, is a fair thing throughout all of life.
1:118
那無神的人乃是愚昧人,因他已喪失了默觀的官能;
The godless man is a fool, having lost the contemplative faculty;
1:119
and the lawless man, having lost the practical.
1:120
Keep it in common, he says, that it may be yours both to live life eternal and to become one who sees clearly.
1:121
For far brighter than the light of the eyes do the keepings of the divine commandments shine forth for us.
1:122
手,是指那整全的行動;
The hand is the action taken as a whole;
1:123
and the finger, the more particular action.
1:124
And if you obey me, you will have a wide heart for the reception of the virtues.
1:125
她佯裝與丈夫同住,好像是按律法而活的;
She pretends to dwell with a husband, as though living according to the law;
1:126
and she removes all that is fearful and hindering, putting forward as a pretext the sojourn abroad of the one who dwells with her.
1:127
For her house is the ways of Hades, leading down to the chambers of death.
1:128
For those who obey her, becoming earthy and of the dust through her, shall thus perish.
1:129
And the phrase 'upon the plank of Hades,' the others rendered as 'in the depths.'
1:130
The word 'beginning,' signifying many things, as we have said, now denotes the eternal, the cause, and the creative principle.
1:131
然而,起初乃是某些事物的起初,它所表明的是一種關係,而非一種本體的存在;
But a beginning is the beginning of certain things, and it signifies a relation, not a substantial being;
1:132
as with right and left.
1:133
所以,作為本體,神的智慧並不是某些事物的起初;
Therefore, being a substance, the Wisdom of God is not the beginning of certain things;
1:134
for even before creation it possesses its being as wisdom.
1:135
但當它承受一種對受造之物的關係時,它便成了神那創造與眷佑之諸道路的起初,指向那些從創造主得其存在的工作,而這些工作對於它之為智慧毫無所增;
But when it receives a relation toward the things that come to be, then it becomes the beginning of the ways of God that are creative and providential, unto the works which have their existence from the Creator, they contributing nothing to it toward its being wisdom;
1:136
but the relation according to which it is called beginning and creator came into being at the very time when the created things also did.
1:137
因為起初並不先於那以它為起初的事物而存在;
For a beginning does not pre-exist the things of which it is the beginning;
1:138
nor are these said to exist after it, if the created things have their substance in time.
1:139
For being eternal, Wisdom is not subject to time.
1:140
The beginning, then, is a consort to the created things.
1:141
Existing before creation, being Wisdom, the Son of God, when He says:
1:142
'The Lord created me,' He does not mean that His mind came into substantial being, but rather a relation toward the things created.
1:143
For He says He was created 'for works,' inasmuch as He is the beginning of the creative and providential ways of God — that is, the cause of them — though this is said still by way of introduction.
1:144
神的兒子成了人,取了奴僕的形象;
The Son of God became man, taking upon Himself the form of a servant;
1:145
祂既是先於萬世且永恆的,就其為神之道而言,卻被說成是受造的,因為祂領受了那從馬利亞而來的出生,成了肉身;
and being before the ages and everlasting, in that He is God the Word, He is said to have been created because He received the birth from Mary, having become flesh;
1:146
so that those who wish to walk according to God and toward God might use Him as a teacher, since He furnishes to those who follow Him a pattern of the noblest life and a teaching.
1:147
That the word 'created' does not by any means indicate a coming into substantial being, David shows when he says:
1:148
'Create in me a clean heart, O God.' For he asks not as one who does not have a heart, to receive one, but as one who has soiled it, to receive it back again cleansed.
1:149
And Paul too, when he says that the two are 'created into one new man,' indicates not the coming-into-being of men's substance, but a union arising from concord.
1:150
just as those who translated it rendered it 'He acquired me.'
1:151
That is to say: 'He laid down the cause and foundation of created things,'
1:152
according to the saying, 'In Him all things hold together, and He is before all things.' And the Lord Himself says:
1:153
「我是神創造之物的元始。」因為,祂既願作教會的根基,就甘願成為人,好使教會能立在祂上面而不被動搖;
'I am the beginning of the creation of God.' For, wishing to be the foundation of the Church, He endured to become man, that upon Him she might be established and not be shaken;
1:154
照樣,祂既願賜給受造之物「存在」,就按著它成了受造的,引入前述的那種關係,向那將要存在之物成為開端與原因;
so likewise, wishing to grant being to the creation, He came into being according to it, introducing the aforesaid relation, becoming to the things that would be a beginning and cause;
1:155
'but even if in these respects,' He says, 'I was created, yet before all things God begets me,' which is to say, as Son.
1:156
祂以「寶座」指祂自己的國度,以「風」指那些理性的靈;
By 'throne' He means His own kingdom, and by 'winds' the intelligent spirits;
1:157
'who walks upon the wings of the winds' — wishing to set forth the lightness and incorporeality of His essence.
1:158
Observe that the works, Wisdom, and God are distinguished.
1:159
至於「堅固」,是怎樣的呢?乃是它們不需要任何底座的支撐;
And 'strong' — in what way? In that they need no support beneath them;
1:160
for they are held together by the will of God alone.
1:161
或是因為我一顯現就賜下生命;或是因為我藉著某種啟示俯就那人的軟弱,那時我便出來;
Either because, as soon as I appear, I grant life; or because, condescending by some revelation to the weakness of that man, I then come forth;
1:162
因為祂既是生命,又向那些能看見祂的人顯出,就賜下生命;
for being Life, and having gone forth to those who are able to see Him, He gives life;
1:163
and by 'will' He means either love, or that He made us self-determining so as to be ready to do what we ought.
1:164
「讓他轉離」,好使他得著明辨的智慧;
'Let him turn aside,' that he may receive understanding;
1:165
for the imperfect man is strengthened by the words and mysteries of Wisdom.
1:166
The same nourishment is called both flesh and bread and milk and wine.
1:167
然而愚昧人卻被說成是像吃自己的餅、像喝調和的酒那樣領受它;
Yet the foolish are said to partake of it as of their bread and as of mixed wine;
1:168
and if this is so, how shall we understand the words:
1:169
「人吃了天使的糧」?你當為我以「餅」理解為神那堅實的誡命,以「酒」理解為那從研讀聖經而來對祂的認識;
'Man ate the bread of angels'? By 'bread' understand for me the firm commandments of God, and by 'wine,' the knowledge of Him that comes from the study of the divine Scriptures;
1:170
and likewise also His divine body and precious blood.
1:171
那本性有悟性的人聽見:「白日太陽必不傷你,夜間月亮也不害你。」祂以「炎熱」稱那今生的憂慮;
The one who is naturally discerning hears: 'By day the sun shall not burn you, nor the moon by night.' By 'heat' He calls the cares of this life;
1:172
祂稱那些被它烤乾的人為「草」;
and those who are withered by it He calls 'grass';
1:173
救主藉著比喻表明那些患難;
and the Saviour, through the parable, indicates the afflictions;
1:174
and the assaults against the word and the persecutions He called 'heat.'
1:175
The wise man, by a rebuking word, brings the dull-hearted to perception.
1:176
你可看見,並非「渴望」本身是惡的,而是以某種方式去渴望才是惡的?「惡人的指望也是惡的」;
Do you see that it is not desiring that is evil, but desiring in a certain manner that is evil? 'But the hopes of the ungodly are evil';
1:177
for everything he will hope for is destruction.
1:178
「代替他」這句話,並非因敬虔人本應受刑罰,乃是因惡人為義人所設的網羅既已張開,敬虔人便藉神從其中得救,而不敬虔的人卻因被神的眷顧所撇棄而落在其中;
The phrase 'in his stead' is not because the godly man is subject to the penalty, but because, since the snare has been set by the wicked against the righteous, the godly is delivered from it by God, while the ungodly, being abandoned by divine providence, falls into it;
1:179
or because, since the righteous man is subject to certain sins as a man, when the ungodly comes and does evil to the righteous, he delivers him from his sins and from the punishments to come, and takes the retributions upon himself; and he is handed over not by any other, but by his own wickedness, as having beforehand given himself up to a reprobate mind.
1:180
那些積聚敗壞之物的人,在德行上必減損;
Those who gather corruption are diminished in virtues;
1:181
or those who gather up words of teaching and do not impart them.
1:182
那對自己家中各樣缺失都心懷不滿的人,必無家可歸;
He who is vexed at each of the failings of his own household shall be without a house;
1:183
and the fool shall be servant to the wise.
1:184
祂說,所謂「不敬虔的人」,就是那恨惡神的人;
'The ungodly one,' then, He says, is he who hates God;
1:185
「罪人」就是那行事邪惡的人;
and the sinner is he who is wicked in his deeds;
1:186
祂在此以「義人」指那憑理性與知識行事的人;
and by 'righteous' here He means the one who is active with reason and knowledge;
1:187
for great is the exactness of righteousness.
1:188
(2) 'Better' — not comparative, but in the sense of 'good.'
1:189
The practical and unlearned man is more honourable than the one who is skilled in speech, refined, yet inactive.
1:190
'The roots of the righteous shall not be plucked up' — that is, their good habits.
1:191
祂說:「凡他所說的,他都用行為加以證實」;
'Whatever he may say,' He says, 'he confirms it by his works';
1:192
縱使它比行為更為可信;
and if it is more trustworthy than a deed;
1:193
又或作「明顯的」、「經過試驗的」、「無可辯駁的」、「足以將它顯明的」之意;
or in the sense of 'evident,' 'well-tested,' 'irrefutable,' 'sufficient to demonstrate it';
1:194
而「不義的見證人」就是那設法為自己一切不義之行辯護的人;
and 'a witness of the unjust' is he who undertakes to defend whatever unjust things he does;
1:195
and 'deceitful,' as one having nothing upright.
1:196
論及刑罰的話,使那剛開始致力於實行生活的人感到不安;
The account of punishments disturbs the one who has only just begun to devote himself to the practical life;
1:197
but the account of the promises gladdens him.
1:198
For the perfect righteous man will not be afraid of an evil report, having the fear of the Lord which surpasses all things.
1:199
義人深知人的軟弱,就饒恕人,縱使朋友所行的是過失;
The righteous man, knowing human weakness, forgives, even if what comes from his friend be a fault;
1:200
or because, recognizing that his friend is according to the image of God, he is in agreement with himself, thinking modestly, and guarding himself, and having nothing of hostile malice, he keeps his thoughts free from all discord.
1:201
因為前者必得著德行的結局,後者卻沒有成熟的果子;
For the one will attain the end of virtue, but the others will have no ripe fruit;
1:202
and he will be in terror of himself, finding no way to stand together with his own sin.
1:203
那本性的律法,生命的根源從中湧流而出;
The natural law, from which the source of life gushes forth;
1:204
因為律法不是為義人設立的;
for the law is not laid down for the righteous;
1:205
而那陷在諸惡網羅中的人,其結局乃是至於死亡的刑罰;
but punishment unto death is for the one ensnared by evils;
1:206
the fountain of life is the works of the commandments.
1:207
To the Gentiles, now righteous, shall be added the wealth of those who are of the circumcision.
1:208
心思一旦察覺到罪,便使靈魂憂傷;
The mind, perceiving sin, causes pain to the soul;
1:209
不敬虔之人的「房屋」,乃是他們的習性與心態;
and the 'houses' of the ungodly are their habits and dispositions;
1:210
and 'tents' are their choices of will.
1:211
There is a way which seems to be right, namely the one that prefers things which merely seem to be over things which truly are.
1:212
With steadfast endurance he reckons what must be done.
1:213
They shall have a portion, or they shall share it together.
1:214
For the bold man would not be a coward.
1:215
This, it seems to me, he has set down not in the manner of exhortation, but as a report of what actually came to pass.
1:216
Then, by way of correction, comes what follows.
1:217
The saying, 'He who dishonours a poor man sins'; for the evils there are plain.
1:218
Nor does anyone amend himself, nor would he condemn such things.
1:219
And who would praise the rest? He who takes thought for virtue abounds in both action and knowledge.
1:220
For indeed he who always considers what ought to be done will have something more.
1:221
But the man of pleasure and without feeling for hardship—that is, he who shuns toil—will be in want of the virtues.
1:222
The word 'nest' sometimes signifies the place, and sometimes the living creatures that dwell in the nest.
1:223
So then, either the place of wisdom—the contemplations in which she dwells—is more to be chosen than the falsely-named knowledge.
1:224
For just as gold is better than silver, so also wisdom is better than prudence; for the one consists in knowing, the other in interpreting the things known.
1:225
For the one consists in knowing, the other in interpreting the things that are known.
1:226
Or the 'nests of wisdom' are the Churches, or the abodes of the saints therein.
1:227
For having the unceasing continuity of their works, they possess the length of the life that befits them, turning away from evils, that is, from death.
1:228
Here he calls the devil a lawless man, who makes trial of men, wishing to know which of them are like himself and willing to transgress the law.
1:229
And leading them away into paths, that is, into deeds that are not good.
1:230
And this same one is he who fixes his eyes upon each of men, discerning precisely toward what passion each is inclined.
1:231
And having learned it from their movements, he sets his own snares.
1:232
And having seized him, he leads him away into all manner of evils.
1:233
He said 'to determine with his lips,' because by his wicked suggestions he is eager to bring to completion in deeds, through men, all that is according to his heart's desire.
1:234
By his baits he draws them into every kind of vice.
1:235
An eye that beholds good things—that is, one that is discerning.
1:236
But what the good things are must be inquired into.
1:237
And not beholding gold, he is grieved.
1:238
Or if it be a splendid body, again he pines away.
1:239
But hear what the good things are.
1:240
The heaven, the earth, the sea, and the whole creation.
1:241
So look upon such things as gladden the soul.
1:242
For what profit is there if the eye be delighted, yet nothing further come of it, but the soul be corrupted? Verse.
1:243
Having spoken above of the many things belonging to his wickedness, we shall add to what has been said the things that remain.
1:244
Along with all his extravagances, he says these things also to those who obey him.
1:245
'This matter is of necessity' (having sharpened his power of discernment toward evil), 'one must make use of it.'
1:246
'Pleasure is natural; one must make use of it.'
1:247
'Riches are from God; one must enjoy them.'
1:248
But when he has thoroughly persuaded his subject in all things, then he makes him boast in his mind, as though he were performing great works of righteousness, and as though in old age he lays up these things.
1:249
The believer, not being eager about sensible things, is as one having all things.
1:250
But he who is eager about these things is as one having nothing.
1:251
For he who loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver.
1:252
Or also: The believer shall behold the words of this world as riches of the mind, spoken figuratively.
1:253
But the unbeliever will not so much as touch any chance matter of these words, because of the impurity of his soul.
1:254
The dumb man is he who by silence seems to conceal his own ignorance, or the passion he hides within himself or from those near him.
1:255
He does not carry out every wickedness (for that is impossible), but he does the things that can coexist together.
1:256
And moreover he did not cease from doing evil.
1:257
Or by 'good thought' he means Christ.
1:258
And everyone who does good things shall find Him.
1:259
For he calls prudent the one who performs every good work.
1:260
He who does not live rightly hides his hands unjustly within his soul.
1:261
Being unwilling to till his own land, how shall he be filled with bread? For the practical virtues hold the place of hands, offering to our mouth the bread that came down from heaven.
1:262
This man, therefore, cannot be benefited even in the least, being slothful.
1:263
That is, judgment covers over the defence of the ungodly.
1:264
For God surpasses in recompense those who do well.
1:265
Do not give yourself over to postponing repentance out of shame before someone.
1:266
For if you die and have no time to repent, you shall no longer have any rest.
1:267
He brings in to himself the envious devil, and eats his own morsel together with him—he who does any of his good works with vainglory or to please men.
1:268
For such a one has his reward in full.
1:269
For indeed the devil makes these things manifest to men, so that through the praise given to the man-pleaser he may ruin him and deprive him of the eternal good things.
1:270
Wicked men will not beget virtues and right doctrines (for these are the offspring of the soul), because they do not fear the Lord.
1:271
But those who are in the fear of the Lord shall have offspring the whole day long, and their hope shall not depart.
1:272
And these things follow upon what has been said.
1:273
For the enemies, he says, being wicked, rejoiced over the falls of others.
1:274
But that which you yourself blame, do not envy.
1:275
For their supposed splendour and deceitfulness lasts only unto this present life, and is quenched at death.
1:276
And often it has been quenched even while they were still living, when they were convicted.
1:277
The wise man says these things to Wisdom, or the servant of Christ to the Lord.
1:278
Having named two things, he asks for more.
1:279
But the first, seeming thing is a preliminary petition toward obtaining the things he asks, the one who says:
1:280
'Do not refuse to hear me, but grant the grace.'
1:281
Concerning which he first brought forward this petition:
1:282
'Remove far from me the vain word, that which is falsely named, lest, being filled, I become a liar.'
1:283
因為飽足生出驕傲,並自以為超乎責備之上;
For satiety produces arrogance and the notion of being above reproof;
1:284
as though one were without sin in word and deed.
1:285
他說,「誰看見我呢?」這句話乃是「誰責備我呢?」的意思;
For the phrase 'Who sees me?' stands in place of 'Who reproves me?' he says;
1:286
that is, lest, being filled with wisdom, I appear incomprehensible to others, or even appear a liar by speaking things beyond them.
1:287
牠乃是一種形似蠕蟲的活物;
being a certain worm-like creature;
1:288
牠摸起來極為滑膩,因此當人大口吞飲水時,牠便藉著這滑膩不知不覺地潛入;
and it is exceedingly smooth to the touch, so that for those who gulp down water it steals in unnoticed by reason of its smoothness;
1:289
接著牠纏繞在體內某一肢體之上,直到吸盡血液、將人殺死之前,決不鬆脫;
then, having wound itself around one of the inner members, it does not tear itself loose until, by draining the blood, it kills the man;
1:290
for it is a blood-drinker, and from this it is nourished and grows.
1:291
To this creature he now likened the devil,
1:292
who, being unable to master men by force,
1:293
牠便主要藉三種伎倆攻擊人:使之歡愉、迷惑、欺騙,並藉此漸漸地、不知不覺地將他們毀滅;
for he employs chiefly three assaults against them—delighting, charming, deceiving—and by this means gradually and imperceptibly destroys them;
1:294
因為他首先藉異端邪說之途引人走向滅亡——這正是他所稱的陰間——藉著審判的結局顯明罪的深重;
for first he leads them by the paths of false opinion toward destruction—which indeed he also calls Hades—showing by the end of the sentence the magnitude of sin;
1:295
其次,用放蕩淫佚的貪歡將人纏裹,這正是他所稱的戀慕女子;
next, enveloping them in the pleasure-loving indulgence of licentiousness, which indeed he also calls the love of women;
1:296
此外,還有貪財,即貪婪,這正是他所稱的水不足以充滿的地;
in addition to these, by avarice, that is, covetousness, which indeed he called land not filled with water;
1:297
for such is the sandy ground, insatiable.
1:298
These, then, are the passions which have been devised by the evil one for the destruction of men, which he so loves and cherishes as his own daughters.
1:299
至於第四樣,他所指的乃是對這些事的操練與習慣;
And the fourth he calls the practice and habituation of these things;
1:300
因為並非那一次持異端、或行淫、或貪求更多的人,就立刻淪陷於情慾之下,乃是那因習慣終至連知覺也被制伏的人;
for it is not he who has once held a false opinion, or committed fornication, or coveted more, who has straightway fallen prey to the passions, but he who thereafter has been overcome even in his very sense-perception by habit;
1:301
for such you would find those who are buried in false opinions, never taking their fill, but ever stretching their passions further, so as even to urge others on to these things.
1:302
所以,正如水與火在得著合宜之物的供給時並不停止,也不說「夠了」,反倒越發熾烈;
Just as, therefore, both water and fire do not cease at the supply of things suited to them, nor say 'It is enough,' but rather become the more inflamed;
1:303
水也不因水的流注而消退,反倒漲溢;
and the water does not abate at the inflowing of more water, but increases;
1:304
'These things,' he says, 'do you also, O child, knowing them, keep yourself away from, lest little by little you be unawares despoiled of life by pleasure, as by a most smooth leech.'
1:305
飛鷹的蹤跡:乃是智者的靈魂,這靈魂雖有智慧,卻無法憑自己知曉那屬靈之鷹的飛翔;
The tracks of a flying eagle: the soul of the wise man, which, though wise, is powerless of itself to know the flights of the spiritual eagle;
1:306
這鷹是巨大的,展翅寬廣,滿有利爪,卻找不到魔鬼臨在的蹤跡,儘管牠不知從何處在我面前飛掠而過;
The eagle is great and long in his span and full of talons, having no track of the presence of the devil, even if he has flown past me from I know not where;
1:307
for when the evil one turned aside from me, I did not perceive it, because I had no longing toward him.
1:308
Such is the way of an adulteress: the adulterated teaching.
1:309
那從外邦人而來的百姓,先前是罪與魔鬼的奴僕;
The people from among the nations, being formerly a slave to sin and to the devil;
1:310
「我要藉那無知的民惹動你們的怒氣」;
'I will provoke you to anger by a nation without understanding';
1:311
又說:「愚頑人必飽得生命的食物」;
and, 'A fool shall be filled with the foods of life';
1:312
又說:「被恨惡的婦人」,就是妓女;
and, 'A hated woman,' that is, a harlot;
1:313
因為那從外邦而出的教會曾是妓女,隨從別神;
for the Church from among the nations was a harlot, going after strange gods;
1:314
又說「使女趕出主母」:就是外邦的教會趕出那作主母的會堂;
and 'if a maidservant cast out her own mistress': the Church of the nations cast out the Synagogue, which was the mistress;
1:315
for the law and the prophets have need of this one.
1:316
那按字句的遵守,乃是屬理性省察的婢女——這遵守正是猶太人所看重、待之如主母的;
The literal observance is servant to the intellectual examination—the observance which the Jews indeed preferred as though it were mistress;
1:317
but the nations, taking the letter over into the spiritual, cast out that which among those people was as mistress, namely the bodily observance of the law.
1:318
The nations, he says, in whom there is no strength, and who lay up for themselves eternal life through good works.
1:319
乃是一種魚,或說是那稱為牛虻的野兔——即先前軟弱、如今投奔基督的外邦人;
a kind of fish, or rather the hares called gadflies—the formerly weak nations that took refuge with Christ;
1:320
for the rock is a refuge for the rock-badgers, which made their dwellings in the rocks.
1:321
'And so do you also,' he says, 'even if you be a weak creature, lay hold of the rock of the true faith, and direct your life toward it.'
1:322
By works, leaning upon them, one enters into the kingdom.
1:323
'Therefore do you also,' he says, 'not, on account of the weakness of your faith, disbelieve in the kingdom of heaven, but believing in the promise concerning it, pursue the commands that make for it.'
1:324
因為一切有理性的都在祂看來如同牲畜;
for all rational beings are as cattle to him;
1:325
'But I am without reason.' It is said that natural energy passes through without hindrance.
1:326
He who was offered up for sins, and who walks on high, has the flock following after him.
1:327
他顯出容面,就是那將道播撒在人心中、大力宣揚光明的人;
he bears a countenance, who, sowing the word in souls, is mightily proclaiming the light;
1:328
因為天國近了。這位便是那從起初就喚醒人心、並藉眾人預先宣告他道成肉身降臨之日的;
for the kingdom of heaven has drawn near. This was he who from the beginning was awakening the hearts of men, and through many foretold the day of his coming in the flesh;
1:329
and expelling the darkness, and manifestly showing forth the eternal light to all.
1:330
Walking about among females with good courage—that is, in the Churches—with good courage and nobly, as he says:
1:331
'Lo, I am with you all the days, even unto the consummation of the age.' Verse.
1:332
或者說,若你將自己沉入聖經的深意之中;
Or also, if you let yourself down into the mind of the Scriptures;
1:333
or, if you have not a docile ear, but are contentious, will you listen? But if you are quarrelsome, we have no such custom. Verse.
1:334
You shall not give your wealth to pleasures or to alien teachings.
1:335
Drinking the wine of the true vine—the interpretation of the Scriptures and the contemplation of things that are—approach the examination of the understanding with much discernment.
1:336
Those, then, who labor and suffer pain for God's sake, when they have been made drunk with the fatness of the Lord's house, forget their pains.
1:337
Hold your purpose to giving heed to my words, which are spoken by God.
1:338
北風就是魔鬼,牠激動並試探那些崇高的聖徒,卻不肯做工;
The north wind is the devil, rousing up and tempting the saints who are lofty, and unwilling to work;
1:339
or stirring up arguments against his own doctrines.
1:340
As, then, he applies these things rather to the well-being of the living creatures, so the rod—that is, chastisement—sets in order the lawless nation.
1:341
'From such,' he says, 'take away rather their power, and entrust to them neither practical rule nor rational authority.'
1:342
If the tree of life springs from the fruits of righteousness, everyone who hides righteousness by injustice—which is called a hand—shall not eat of the tree of life.
1:343
Of your disciples, lest you bring the teaching to bear upon their habit.
1:344
The contemplation of created things, and the contemplation of the Holy Trinity, he says are the garment of a pure mind, of fine linen and purple.
1
