and some he made of silver, some of gold; but the laver he fashioned out of the women's mirrors, teaching that whoever washes his own deeds and the wayfaring powers of the soul ought to behold himself as in a mirror.
1:3034
And that such a course of life is called a mirror, James too writes:
1:3035
of the hearer who becomes forgetful and is no doer of the work, he says:
1:3036
'he observed his face in a mirror, and straightway went away and forgot what manner of man he was.'
1:3037
He did not find fault with observing one's face in a mirror, but with departing straightway.
1:3038
And just as one who looks in a mirror, when he departs from the mirror, no longer sees himself, so he who attends to the law, if he is not a doer of the law, passes away like the one departing from the mirror, and receives forgetfulness of that which pertains to it.
1:3039
'But we all, with unveiled face, behold as in a mirror the glory of the Lord.'
1:3040
In the laver, then, that was made from mirrors, the apostle also washed his hands, and urged others on to this.
1:3041
'that I may hear the voice of your praise.'
1:3042
你看,在洗手之後,隨即便有觀看奇妙作為、並聽見稱頌之聲的事;
You see that after the washing of the hands there comes also the beholding of the wonders and the hearing of the voice of praise;
1:3043
for virtue must not halt at action alone, but must reach even to contemplation and praise, even to the recognition of the Good itself, the Truth.
1:3044
'and to declare all your wondrous works.'
1:3045
The hearing of the voice of praise comes about with a view to declaring all the wonders of God.
1:3046
He has, in his own discourse, no other narrative at all than that concerning the wonders of God.
1:3047
And thus he who says these things is a priest — not one exercising the priesthood by succession according to the courses of the law, but rather like Samuel, who was ever in the house.
1:3048
And each of the saints who is able to say:
1:3049
'But I am continually with you' —
1:3050
'My eyes are continually toward the Lord' —
1:3051
凡時常舉目仰望神的人,就是繞行神的祭壇;
he who continually has his eyes toward God goes about the altar of God,
1:3052
abiding with him always, and always he ministers as a priest.
1:3053
'O Lord, I have loved the beauty of your house, and the place of the tabernacle of your glory.'
1:3054
帳幕與殿有何分別呢?屢次已說過:帳幕乃是表明進步;
In what do tabernacle and house differ? It has often been said that the tabernacle signifies progress;
1:3055
因為它是旅途中行路之人的居所,是可以搬移的房屋;
for it is a dwelling of those on a journey, a portable house,
1:3056
至於殿,卻是固定安置於一處的;
whereas the house is set fast in one place;
1:3057
and so it signifies perfection.
1:3058
'And the place of the tabernacle of your glory I have loved' — that is, when I was making progress.
1:3059
The glory of the tabernacle — that is, of progress — comes to be both in practical and in intellectual virtue.
1:3060
Magnificent is this one who is able to say:
1:3061
'All that we were bound to do, we have done.'
1:3062
In the proper sense the fitting is good, when it is directed toward virtue and godliness.
1:3063
Comely is he who through celibacy succeeds in how he may please the Lord.
1:3064
He who is holy in body and in spirit possesses comeliness.
1:3065
'The beauty, therefore, of your house I have loved' — that is, the perfection.
1:3066
'Destroy not my soul together with the ungodly, nor my life with men of blood.'
1:3067
Being righteous, do not condemn me with the ungodly; do not drag me down into their company.
1:3068
And you will not chastise me together with the ungodly, if you restrain me from coming into ungodliness —
1:3069
as I journey, if I hope in you, so as not to grow weak.
1:3070
然而我既已完全,就不與惡人一同滅亡;
But being perfect, I do not perish together with the ungodly;
1:3071
no zealous man is condemned along with the base.
1:3072
And the form of destruction is twofold:
1:3073
'Chastise me not with the ungodly'; do not number me among these who are punished for ungodliness.
1:3074
求你保守我在敬虔之中,使我以討你真理的喜悅為念;
Keep me in godliness, in being well-pleasing to your truth;
1:3075
for ungodliness will not save the one who is its own,
1:3076
and, failing to save, it destroys him.
1:3077
'and my life with men of blood.'
1:3078
May I never have such a life as murderous men have.
1:3079
Those who boast of being great and of being men, yet cause the little ones in the church to stumble, are men of blood.
1:3080
May such things never be done by me, so that I should have my life together with them.
1:3081
This is life and length of days: to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
1:3082
He who possesses this manner of living does not have his life together with men of blood; he is dead as regards the men of blood.
1:3083
And he is dead in that he does not have the life which they themselves possess.
1:3084
Moreover, in their deeds they still have lawlessness.
1:3085
They have not ceased to have it, but still have it.
1:3086
And their right hand is filled with bribes.
1:3087
This can also serve to accuse judges who take bribes.
1:3088
But even quietly, even we who are not sitting in judgement often take bribes, whenever we show partiality toward someone.
1:3089
And if a man procures pleasant things for himself, he takes a bribe; he receives gifts from his own self.
1:3090
But I have walked in my innocence.
1:3091
None of those who take bribes and have their right hand filled with gifts, none of the lawless and of the men of blood, has walked in innocence.
1:3092
以呂馬這行邪術的,就是這樣的一個人,既不敬虔,又在不法中行事,右手也滿了賄賂;
Such a man was Elymas the magician, both impious and walking in lawlessness and having his right hand full of bribes;
1:3093
for he seemed to be zealous in deceiving, and it was said to him:
1:3094
'O you who are full of all guile and all villainy, you son of the devil!'
1:3095
But he who is filled with all villainy cannot say:
1:3096
Redeem me, O God, and have mercy on me.
1:3097
He who walks in innocence, he who abides in the aforementioned upright deeds, is the one who says 'Redeem me.'
1:3098
「縱然我從事於這等偉大的正直善行,並且靠著你的同工,凡屬美德之事都在我身上得以成就,然而我這卑賤的身體仍舊壓著我,我仍舊身處困苦之地;
'Even if I am engaged in such great upright deeds, and by your co-working all things pertaining to virtue are accomplished in me, yet the body of my humiliation still weighs me down; I am still in the place of affliction;
1:3099
for my foot has stood in uprightness.'
1:3100
For the foot of the inner man to stand in uprightness is the same as to stand upon the rock, according to what is said:
1:3101
你使我的腳站立在磐石上;
You have set my feet upon a rock;
1:3102
for uprightness, like a rock, is unbreakable and cannot be cut through.
1:3103
My foot, therefore, is firm in my uprightness.
1:3104
並且,站立在正直之中,與站立在信心之中是同一回事;
And to stand in uprightness is the same as to stand in the faith;
1:3105
for indeed 'you stand in the faith.'
1:3106
Such a standing does not come to be apart from Jesus.
1:3107
Those who have this standing stand with him, so that he says:
1:3108
'There are some of those standing here, of those here with me.'
1:3109
In the congregations I will bless you, O Lord.
1:3110
In the church I will render up the hymns of thanksgiving, not somewhere outside.
1:3111
He who, outside and contrary to the mind of the church, professes to give thanks to God, does not bless him in the congregations.
1:3112
在這篇之前的詩篇,都是屬大衛的;
The psalms before this one belonged to David;
1:3113
this one is inscribed as of David.
1:3114
He himself brought it forth at the prompting of the Holy Spirit.
1:3115
He sent it up before he was anointed.
1:3116
大衛顯然是受了三次膏抹;
Now David appears to have been anointed three times;
1:3117
第一次,是當他來到撒母耳那裡受膏、而撒母耳來到耶西那裡之時;
first, when he came to Samuel and was anointed, and Samuel came to Jesse;
1:3118
第二次,是在掃羅死了以後;
the second, when Saul had died;
1:3119
for some had chosen David as king, but others Mephibosheth the son of Saul.
1:3120
When the son of Saul had been betrayed by Abner on the pretext of a woman, David was anointed over all the people in Hebron.
1:3121
Formerly, at that point, he plainly lived as a private man.
1:3122
Secondly, that he might rule over some portion of the people.
1:3123
At the death of Saul's son, so that he might rule over the remaining portion of the people as well, thereupon and once more he was anointed by all.
1:3124
We inquire, then, concerning which anointing he speaks here.
1:3125
因為這是總括地指著每一次的膏抹而言;
For it is universally concerning every anointing;
1:3126
他說這篇詩篇是在他全然尚未受膏之先說的,而這也是合情合理的;
he says that the psalm was spoken before he was anointed at all, and reasonably so;
1:3127
if before the first anointing, it is evident that it was also before the second and the third.
1:3128
But if before the second, it is not necessarily before the first.
1:3129
If before the third, it is not of necessity also before the first and the second.
1:3130
But the psalm appears above all to have been spoken before the first anointing, that is, before every anointing.
1:3131
The psalm, therefore, is before his being anointed.
1:3132
耶和華是我的亮光,是我的拯救;
The Lord is my light and my saviour;
1:3133
whom shall I fear? If God enlightens me and saves me, whom do I fear? Neither man, nor evil power, nor the devil himself.
1:3134
這裡的「誰」字,乃是用來代替「沒有一人」;
The word 'whom' here stands in place of 'no one';
1:3135
因為這種用法在聖經中屢見不鮮;
for this usage occurs continually in the Scriptures;
1:3136
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? — in place of 'no one.'
1:3137
Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? — in place of 'no one'; and further:
1:3138
Who shall harm me? Since, then, many things are signified by the word, as has been said elsewhere, here 'who' stands in place of 'no one.'
1:3139
所以,這段話並不是論到可感官覺察的生命,也不是論到某種可感官覺察的光照;
The discourse, then, is not about perceptible life and some perceptible illumination;
1:3140
for by the divine light they are illumined in the mind and the soul.
1:3141
And life is always yoked together with salvation.
1:3142
永遠的生命與永遠的救恩乃是同一回事;
Eternal life and eternal salvation are the same thing;
1:3143
Israel, at any rate, is saved by the Lord with an everlasting salvation.
1:3144
至於生命總是與光照相連這一點,可以從許多經文中看出來;
And that life is always yoked together with illumination can be seen from many passages;
1:3145
The life was the light of men; and again this holy man prays:
1:3146
求你光照我的眼目,免得我沉睡至死——這就表明,凡失去了真光照的人,便沉睡以至於死;
Enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep unto death — signifying that he who is deprived of the true illumination sleeps unto death;
1:3147
death, not the common one, but that which is opposed to the blessed life.
1:3148
The Lord, then, is my light and my saviour.
1:3149
He himself instructs me, he speaks to me in secret, he enlightens me through the things he converses about, and his word prepares me straightway to have salvation.
1:3150
Since I have said that the one who is enlightened altogether possesses life — indeed the Saviour himself also says:
1:3151
我是世界的光;
I am the light of the world;
1:3152
he who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
1:3153
凡擁有生命之光的人,無所畏懼,尤其因為神的真理本身成了一面護盾,為他爭戰;
He who possesses the light of life fears no one, especially because the very truth of God becomes a shield doing battle on his behalf;
1:3154
for his truth shall encompass you as with a weapon of defense.
1:3155
耶和華是我生命的保障;
The Lord is the defender of my life;
1:3156
我還懼怕誰呢?耶和華是我生命的保障;
of whom shall I be afraid? The Lord is the defender of my life;
1:3157
of whom shall I be afraid? Who is able to instill dread in me? I am clothed in the whole armor of God, I hold the shield of faith, which quenches all the flaming darts of the evil one.
1:3158
然而,若信心的盾牌能滅盡那惡者的箭,就更能滅盡那些較次等射手所射的箭;
But if the shield of faith quenches the darts of the evil one, how much more will it quench those of the lesser archers;
1:3159
for there are also other base archers.
1:3160
Indeed, behold, the sinners have bent the bow, they have made ready arrows in the quiver, to shoot down in darkness the upright in heart.
1:3161
Invulnerable and unassailable is the whole armor of God.
1:3162
His shield is truth,
1:3163
沒有人能敵擋真理;
and no one is able to prevail against the truth;
1:3164
for we can do nothing, he says, against the truth, but only for the truth.
1:3165
It is a whole armor that girds fast the one armed with it and keeps him unharmed.
1:3166
The Lord, then, is the defender of my life.
1:3167
他說這話並非指著我們共同的性命而言;
He does not say this concerning our common life;
1:3168
因為許多獻身於神、且穿上他全副軍裝的人,都經歷了那共同的死亡,甚至可說是眾人皆然;
for many of those consecrated to God, and who put on his whole armor, have died the common death—not to say all of them;
1:3169
and moreover many were subjected to a violent death, among whom are Naboth and many of the apostles.
1:3170
When those who work evil draw near against me to devour my flesh.
1:3171
Those who set themselves to injure the soul devour flesh.
1:3172
If anyone be found having flesh, he has powerful adversaries against him.
1:3173
But that flesh concerning which Paul speaks, saying:
1:3174
that the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; and again:
1:3175
他若是指著那可感知的肉身而言,這話就成了虛謊;
if he were speaking of the flesh perceived by the senses, the saying would be false;
1:3176
for all the saints, being in the flesh, pleased God while still clothed about with the flesh, and they cannot say:
1:3177
But when someone mortifies the flesh and does away with its works, he is not in the flesh.
1:3178
Those who belong to Jesus Christ have crucified the flesh with its lusts, and they hold it mortified, no longer active.
1:3179
The one being crucified has his hands hindered from acting and his feet from going wherever he wishes.
1:3180
所以,那與基督同釘十字架的人,是把肉體連同肉體的私慾釘死了,使肉體歸於死亡,以致從此在自己的身上帶著耶穌的死;
Those, then, who were crucified with Christ crucified the flesh with its lusts, and rendered it dead, so as henceforth to carry about in their own flesh the dying of Jesus;
1:3181
we always carry about the dying of Jesus.
1:3182
耶和華是我生命的保障;
The Lord is the defender of my life;
1:3183
of whom shall I be afraid? When those who work evil draw near against me to devour my flesh, since they found not the food they craved, they were weakened and fell.
1:3184
But observe what is here joined together.
1:3185
Those who afflict me and my enemies, they themselves were weakened and fell.
1:3186
他們前來要把我拖入軟弱,使我陷於惡劣的境地;
They came to drag me down into weakness, to reduce me to an evil plight;
1:3187
然而他們想要加在我身上的苦難,卻臨到他們自己身上;
but the suffering which they wished to inflict on me came upon themselves;
1:3188
for had they found flesh, they would have devoured me and dragged me down into weakness and sickness.
1:3189
But since they found no flesh, they themselves were weakened and fell, being subjected to famine.
1:3190
Those who afflict me and my enemies, they themselves were weakened and fell.
1:3191
苦待人的並不一定就是仇敵;
The one who afflicts is not in every case an enemy;
1:3192
for many enemies, wishing to surround with afflictions and ill-treatment those against whom they bear enmity, are not able to do this if God does not permit it.
1:3193
And many afflict who are not enemies.
1:3194
Indeed, parents afflict when disciplining their children, and masters their servants, and surely they do not do this out of enmity.
1:3195
It is possible, then, to say that both ranks—those who afflict and the enemies—were weakened and fell.
1:3196
那些苦待人的,正也是仇敵;
The very ones who afflict are also enemies;
1:3197
for they do not afflict for the sake of admonition and instruction.
1:3198
They are not such as those of whom it is said:
1:3199
He who brings forth wisdom from his lips smites with a rod the man void of heart; and again:
1:3200
What will you? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love? These who afflict are not enemies.
1:3201
然而,也有仇敵同時苦待人的時候;
But there are times when the enemy also afflicts;
1:3202
What kind of mortification? — This: not living according to base activities.
1:3203
凡身上帶著耶穌之死的人,不放縱情慾;
He who carries about the dying of Jesus does not live licentiously;
1:3204
他向著放縱已經死了,向著把自己的肚腹當作神已經死了,並使自己的肢體對於肉體的私慾毫無作為;
he has been mortified toward licentiousness, mortified toward making a god of his own belly, and he holds his members inactive with regard to fleshly lusts;
1:3205
他不容肉體自作主張;
he does not allow it to be a law unto itself;
1:3206
for it has blameworthy lusts.
1:3207
Let not sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its lusts.
1:3208
Though an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear.
1:3209
Next he sets forth how it is that he does not fear or dread, saying:
1:3210
of whom shall I be afraid? — since the expression seems to surpass anyone.
1:3211
縱使全隊惡人與惡勢力列陣攻擊我,我的心也不懼怕;
Even should a whole host of wicked men and powers array itself against me, my heart does not fear;
1:3212
and even should they kill the body, the heart remains unshaken, my mind is not struck down.
1:3213
Even should a whole army with great generals come against me, I keep my heart fearless, my mind does not fear.
1:3214
And that a multitude of armies is called by this name:
1:3215
雅各從米所波大米回來、將要與以掃相會的時候,看見了神的軍隊安營;
Jacob, when he was returning from Mesopotamia and was about to meet Esau, saw a camp of angels;
1:3216
for how should there not be a camp about him who was about to go to meet a foe surpassing in might and full of hatred? And likewise Elisha:
1:3217
The army of Syria arrayed itself against Elisha.
1:3218
A divine camp came to be about him, not according to the literal history, but according to the spiritual sense.
1:3219
The soul is led by the mind, and is guided by it as by a charioteer.
1:3220
But if anyone should wish to take the moral sense as well, it is possible.
1:3221
The name 'spirit of the heart' sometimes signifies the mind's disposition.
1:3222
Here we must understand it as the intellect.
1:3223
'If war should rise up against me, in this will I be confident'—
1:3224
in a heart strengthened by the fear of God.
1:3225
The fear of the Lord surpasses all things; and:
1:3226
'There is no want to them that fear him.'
1:3227
I am confident that this heart becomes to me in the place of all things.
1:3228
The virtues are the weapons of godliness.
1:3229
'Let us put on the armour of light, let us lay aside the works of the flesh.'
1:3230
The weapons of light are the virtues—the godly conceptions, the mysteries and doctrines of the truth.
1:3231
Secured in this full armour, a man dreads no one; he holds a hope that cannot be put to shame.
1:3232
'In this, then, I hope'—not simply in my own conception, but in one thus secured.
1:3233
'One thing have I asked of the Lord, this will I seek after.'
1:3234
神是許多美善之物的賜予者;
God is the giver of many good things;
1:3235
「因為祂必將好處賜給求祂的人」,並用祂自己的美善使他們的心願滿足;
'for he will give good things to them that ask him,' and he fills their desire with his own good things;
1:3236
'who satisfies your desire with good things.'
1:3237
One might therefore say, more plausibly, that these good things are the virtues considered according to their species, the mysteries of the truth according to their species.
1:3238
Whenever, then, someone possesses—so to speak—the very genus of the virtues, he possesses them all.
1:3239
So he asks one request: the whole of virtue.
1:3240
當一個人尚未擁有那些已然茂盛的美德時,他所發出的就不是單一的祈求;
When someone does not yet possess the virtues in their flourishing, he does not send up a single request;
1:3241
for if he is in the course of advancing and growing greater in other respects, he again has need of asking, and does not ask a single request.
1:3242
But he who sends up his prayer for the whole of virtue and for the godliness of doctrine sends up a single prayer.
1:3243
It is possible to say this too:
1:3244
these are signified by the name of the tabernacle, as has often been demonstrated.
1:3245
因此,若一個人達到某種程度的長進,並祈求以神為幫助者、也以祂為援助者,他就不會停留在那個祈求上;
If, then, someone comes to be in some measure of progress and asks to have God as a helper, to have him also as an ally, he does not remain in that request;
1:3246
for he passes from progress to progress.
1:3247
He becomes ever better than himself.
1:3248
The dwellings are said to be many, but the house is one.
1:3249
So he who has come to perfection asks one request.
1:3250
'One thing, then, have I asked of the Lord.'
1:3251
Their help—that being prepared they may be able to withstand those who stir up war and the encampments—does not ask a single request.
1:3252
They seek many aids: a soldier's array, the strength of walls, fortifications.
1:3253
But he who has God himself as helper and asks for him alone asks a single request.
1:3254
He becomes all in all, so that each of those who have been perfected has him as everything—as bread, as light, as teacher, as shepherd.
1:3255
'One thing, then, have I asked; this will I seek after.'
1:3256
He who says 'I will seek after' and 'I have asked' shows that the one who seeks and longs to find does not yet possess.
1:3257
And no one yet possesses perfection, except perhaps he attain to the very goal and end of virtue and of union with God.
1:3258
'That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.'
1:3259
我並非現在才開始祈求,而是即使在起初,我也是為著那終點才開始的;
I did not begin asking only now, but even in beginning I began for the sake of the end;
1:3260
for indeed he who begins a craft begins for the sake of the craft's end.
1:3261
Those who have attained to this dwell there.
1:3262
'Blessed are all they that dwell in your house.'
1:3263
He who has the blessed life is in days, and comes not to be in nights.
1:3264
And even if he should ever come to be in night, yet should he take a beginning of longing for that life, he comes to be outside the night.
1:3265
'That I may behold the delightfulness of the Lord, and visit his temple.'
1:3266
Just as I dwell all the days in the house of God, so on all the days do I behold the delightfulness of the Lord and visit his temple.
1:3267
The delightfulness of the Lord is participation in him.
1:3268
And his temple is that state in which God is found, in which God dwells.
1:3269
Perfect virtue is the house of God.
1:3270
And Christ as a Son over his own house, whose house we are; and:
1:3271
'Know ye not that ye are the temple of God?' However, though we have called virtue and complete holiness a house, secondarily we have so called the faithful also.
1:3272
For this reason they become a house: because they possess virtue and holiness.
1:3273
It is not that virtue is called the house of God on account of those who partake of it, but rather, on account of virtue, those who share in it are so called.
1:3274
And the end that lies above all is sketched out most of all.
1:3275
但既然這並非一次全然臨到,我們便稱那些在終點之先的為「諸終點」;
But since this does not come all at once, we speak of the ends that precede the final end;
1:3276
因為在那終點之前也有若干終點;
for there are also ends before the end;
1:3277
when a man has completed one thing, then he makes a beginning.
1:3278
因此,當他完成之時,他便看見某一長進的界限;
When, then, he completes it, he sees the limit of a certain advance;
1:3279
then, beginning, he seeks to see another end, and above all he arrives at the end that is above all.
1:3280
Take the matter for me also in the case of the building of a city:
1:3281
he who ambitiously wishes to build a costly city—and what more can I say?—a royal one, begins the construction.
1:3282
He often completes the quarrying of stone.
1:3283
When he has made ready those materials which he needs and as many as he needs, he then begins to seek a place where he may raise up the city.
1:3284
God becomes all in all—not all in each one, but all in all.
1:3285
In one he is compassionate, whenever someone hastens to be such; in another a good judge; in another just; in another bountiful; in another as a teacher in a disciple.
1:3286
And in all he becomes all things to those who draw near to him, yet not all in each one, but either one or two or three gifts of grace.
1:3287
And that we may make this plain in the case of the gifts of grace, take the case of the Spirit:
1:3288
one has a word of wisdom, another a word of knowledge, another a gift of healings.
1:3289
But whenever someone becomes perfect, no longer having the pledge of the Spirit but the Spirit itself, he becomes all things in each one.
1:3290
I become a perfect overseer and guardian of the temple of God, having nothing else before my eyes than this very thing—beholding the temple of God.
1:3291
'For he hid me in his tabernacle in the day of my troubles.'
1:3292
For this reason 'one thing have I asked, and this will I seek after,' namely, that in the day of my troubles he hid me in his tabernacle.
1:3293
When many evils were pressing upon me and wishing to do me harm, he hid me.
1:3294
如今身體有時也被稱為帳幕;
Now the body too is sometimes called a tabernacle;
1:3295
for 'the earthly tent weighs down the much-pondering mind,' and again:
1:3296
'we who are in this tent groan.'
1:3297
Often, while we are still in the tabernacle and still clothed about with the body, it hides us so that we are not harmed by it, whenever, as I said before, one carries about the dying of Jesus in the body, and buffets the body and brings it into subjection.
1:3298
'He sheltered me in the secret place of his tabernacle.'
1:3299
For the secret place of his tabernacle is not harmful, but protective.
1:3300
But the exposed part of the tabernacle already spoken of does harm rather.
1:3301
'Thus am I clothed about with a body as though not being in a body,' since 'what is mortal is swallowed up by life.'
1:3302
在聖經中,被吞滅與吞滅乃是表示得勝;
To be swallowed up and to swallow up, in Scripture, signifies victory;
1:3303
'when they rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive'—that is, they would have conquered us.
1:3304
'Israel is swallowed up; now is he become among the nations as a useless vessel.'
1:3305
'All they,' it says, 'that devour him shall offend.'
1:3306
'In the tabernacle, then, in the secret place of his tabernacle, he hid me.'
1:3307
凡進入身體之人,若明白他之所以進入其中的緣由與奧祕,也能被藏在它的隱密處;
It is also possible that one who has come to be in a body, if he apprehends the cause and the mystery on account of which he has come to be in it, is hidden in its secret place;
1:3308
for as soon as he knows the mystery and the cause, he will mortify himself and is not swallowed up.
1:3309
It is also possible that this is said concerning the Saviour, or addressed to the Saviour.
1:3310
'In the secret place of his tabernacle he hid me;'
1:3311
he had a tabernacle, he became man.
1:3312
The descent of the Saviour holds a certain hidden mystery.
1:3313
He, then, who is able—after the Word who became flesh has tabernacled in him—to say:
1:3314
'we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth'—he has been sheltered in the secret place of his tabernacle.
1:3315
His shelter has become the apprehending of the mystery of the Saviour's sojourning.
1:3316
The Jews, at any rate, did not apprehend it, and all who are like them, and they were not sheltered in the secret place of his tabernacle.
1:3317
按照先前的解釋,帳幕的隱密處也可能就是那終極目標;
It is also possible, according to the former interpretation, that the secret place of the tabernacle is the end;
1:3318
因為人正是為此而長進,即使長進的人自己並未察覺;
for it is for the sake of this that men advance, even if it escapes the notice of those who are advancing;
1:3319
for unless one attains to it, he cannot see it as it is—destined to see God then as he is, when he comes to the very consummation of blessedness.
1:3320
Have we already beheld?—Yet we do not know.
1:3321
說這些話的並非某一個人,乃是義人的族類、聖徒的會眾;
It is not a man who says these things, but the race of the righteous, the assembly of the saints;
1:3322
for not even the Son of God, when he speaks according to the man, [says these things merely as a man].
1:3323
'The Lord is my light and my saviour;'
1:3324
「我還怕誰呢?」我曾多次說過,論到義人與論到主的人性所說的話,是共通地說的;
'whom shall I fear?' I have often said that what is spoken concerning righteous men and concerning the Lord's manhood is said in common;
1:3325
然而所謂共通,並非按著同等;
yet common not according to equality;
1:3326
for beyond all comparison he surpasses all, even in these things.
1:3327
I call them common according to participation, just as I call the art of medicine common both to the one who has been perfected and possesses it without deficiency, and to those who are still advancing.
1:3328
I do not call it common according to quantity, but according to quality.
1:3329
行淫的人不被藏起,反倒落在帳幕之外;
The fornicator is not hidden, but comes to be outside the tabernacle;
1:3330
for he does not abstain from the fleshly lusts which war against the soul.
1:3331
但那顯然完全順著肉體而活、放縱情慾、耽於奢華、總是揀選享樂而非勞苦,即使那些享樂本是不合宜的——這樣的人,他的帳幕是顯露的,他的身體是顯露的,顯然他是被身體所包裹的;
But he who manifestly lives entirely according to the flesh, giving himself to licentiousness and luxury, and in general preferring pleasures to toils even though they be displeasing—that man has his tabernacle exposed, has his body exposed, and it is evident that he is clothed about with a body;
1:3332
but 'you are not in the flesh,' which teaches that one is to be outside the passions of the flesh.
1:3333
And he who is outside the passions of the flesh is hidden in the tabernacle.
1:3334
In another sense, the secret place of the tabernacle is that which is not known to all.
1:3335
It is no great thing to be exalted upon a perceptible rock, so as to send up thankful praises.
1:3336
All the things done by God, for which it is fitting to give thanks, which one ought to hymn, are not close at hand, nor able to belong to everyone.
1:3337
The rock, then, is the unbreakable Word of God himself, and he who comes to be encircled about it is not struck down.
1:3338
It is said, at any rate, in other places also:
1:3339
'their judges,' or 'their mighty ones, were swallowed up, being held fast by the rock.'
1:3340
掌權者只要仍在磐石之外,似乎剛強有力,能轄制那些不穩固的事物;
And rulers, at any rate, so long as they are outside the rock, seem to be strong and to have mastery over things unstable;
1:3341
but when they come near to the rock, they are straightway overcome.
1:3342
我昨日也說過,被吞滅乃是表示得勝;
I said yesterday too that being swallowed up signifies victory;
1:3343
'when they rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive,' and:
1:3344
'those who swallow up Israel with the whole mouth.'
1:3345
He, then, who is worsted is swallowed up; he who prevails swallows up.
1:3346
無論如何,在出埃及的事上你有一個謎樣的表徵:亞倫照著神的指示丟下他的杖;
You have, at any rate, a certain riddle that came about at the Exodus: Aaron, at God's instruction, cast down his rod;
1:3347
埃及的術士也照樣用邪術丟下他們的杖;
the enchanters of the Egyptians also cast theirs down by their sorceries;
1:3348
那些杖都變成了蛇;
and those became serpents;
1:3349
亞倫的杖卻吞了他們的杖;
and the rod of Aaron swallowed up their rods;
1:3350
for the sceptre of truth, which the servant of God holds, when cast down and stretched forth, swallows up the sophistries of the Egyptians, so that they confess their defeat, saying:
1:3351
'This is the finger of God.'
1:3352
As, then, the rod of Aaron swallowed up the rods of the enchanters—that is, conquered them, and hid them and reduced them to nothing—so, of the rock upon which the one who prays gives thanks, the mighty ones of the adversaries who drew near were swallowed up when they came close to the rock, or their judges.
1:3353
Those who champion the teachings of the heterodox, thinking to establish the heretical arguments as strong and mighty, when the rock—the truth—draws near to them, are swallowed up and reduced to nothing.
1:3354
'We have swallowed him up'—let them not boast as though they had prevailed and conquered me.
1:3355
凡雙腳穩立在這磐石上之人,就獻上感恩的頌讚;
He who has his feet standing firm upon this rock sends up thankful praises;
1:3356
'he put a new song into my mouth.'
1:3357
When the feet stand upon the rock and the steps of the one thus helped are made straight, then he will say:
1:3358
'he put into my mouth a new song, a song of victory.'
1:3359
Upon the rock, then, he who is exalted sends forth songs of victory, having made secure his own onward-marching impulses.
1:3360
'And now, behold, he has lifted up my head above my enemies.'
1:3361
The speaker even now shows that his head has often been lifted up above his enemies.
1:3362
By 'head' he means the mind, as has often been demonstrated.
1:3363
Concerning it, then, it is said also in Ecclesiastes:
1:3364
'The eyes of the wise man are in his head.'
1:3365
The wise man possesses a clear-seeing mind.
1:3366
'And now, therefore, he has lifted up my head.'
1:3367
There are enemies who set upon us — he speaks at each victory:
1:3368
'And now he has lifted up my head above my enemies.'
1:3369
Certain men rose up, urging others toward licentiousness — such as the elders in the case of Susanna, the brothers against Joseph, and she who afterward boasted of having become his mistress.
1:3370
Speaking at the same time in thanksgiving, he shows that he obtained these successes not by his own power, but with God's help.
1:3371
'I went about and offered in his tabernacle a sacrifice of jubilation.'
1:3372
那歡呼之聲暗指得勝;
The jubilant shout hints at victory;
1:3373
for it is an inarticulate cry raised over fallen foes.
1:3374
Thus, for instance, when they encircled Jericho and sounded the ram's-horn trumpets and raised the shout, at their shout the walls of Jericho fell.
1:3375
耶利哥按寓意解,乃是與地相關之處;其名譯為「月亮」,即這屬地之境——不是就其盈滿而言,乃是就其虧缺而言,正如那愚昧人;
Jericho, according to allegory, is the region pertaining to earth; being interpreted as 'moon,' it is the earthly region — not in respect of its waxing, but of its waning, like the fool;
1:3376
for 'the fool changes like the moon.'
1:3377
Whenever, then, one encircles his own tabernacle according to all the interpretations — the tabernacle was said to be [spiritual] progress —
1:3378
he who advances and genuinely accomplishes his progress comes to be encircling it.
1:3379
And again, the body was said to be a tabernacle.
1:3380
Whenever the inner man vigorously sets himself against the body, he comes to be encircling it and prevails.
1:3381
Whenever anyone encircles the tabernacle — the body of Jesus — through faith, he is shown to be a victor.
1:3382
It was said to us in the preceding psalms that 'to sing a song' signifies contemplation — the sending up of praises and odes without an instrument.
