'To make melody' was said to be the practical resounding of the song of victory.
1:3384
'Both, therefore,' he says, 'belong to me: I will both make melody and sing.'
1:3385
He who treats of the doctrines of true religion and possesses a scientific and wise contemplation of them, sings.
1:3386
But he who treats also of the body as an instrument — as harp and psaltery — and strikes all its impulses and senses, which are its strings, being able to bring forth a psalm in tune, that man makes melody.
1:3387
This holy one, then, promises to do the two things: to sing and to make melody.
1:3388
He who buffets his body and brings it into subjection and practices the moral virtues — such as one who does deeds of mercy, one who accomplishes gentleness, one who advances in courage — that man makes melody.
1:3389
But he who contemplates each mystery of the truth and is able to expound with knowledge every doctrine of true religion, that man sings.
1:3390
In the fiftieth [psalm] do we take it as a kind of confession over sin? — Plainly it is set there:
1:3391
when Nathan came and rebuked him concerning the matter of Uriah.
1:3392
It was the time for confession, and there he sends up the psalm as an act of confession.
1:3393
That psalm came into being after he had become king and had gone in to the wife of Uriah.
1:3394
But here [the psalm] is sung before he was anointed, so that this one differs from that both in time and in the deed.
1:3395
How then does he make melody? — Because virtue is unfailing and does not lapse.
1:3396
Judas did not sing and make melody to the Lord.
1:3397
Those who were handed over to Satan, that they might be disciplined not to blaspheme, had not possessed any tabernacle or progress of faith and virtue.
1:3398
然而,你要留意,各篇不同的詩篇絕非都是論到同一個人所說的;
Nevertheless, observe that the various psalms are by no means spoken concerning one and the same person;
1:3399
for this we have said, that they belong to a certain type qualified according to virtue or vice.
1:3400
It is not the same thing to say that 'the man is sinless' and to say that 'the righteous man is sinless.'
1:3401
那擁有義的人,不能被引誘而落入罪中;
He who possesses righteousness cannot be led captive to sin;
1:3402
for how could he, if opposites cannot coexist? He who has evil cannot have good, unless he first turns aside from the evil.
1:3403
你要看那類型,不要看這人或那人;
Look to the type, not to this or that particular man;
1:3404
for when I say that 'the believer can do all things,' I do not mean this or that man, but everyone who possesses faith.
1:3405
And so, if at some point one who is a believer possesses the ability to do all things and to succeed, but the things of his faith should lapse in him, I do not say that 'the believer does not succeed,' but that this particular man does not succeed.
1:3406
Is not the psalm that follows this one earlier in time? — The psalms do not demand such an ordering as you seek.
1:3407
That psalm which convicts the Syrian, Doeg —
1:3408
quite so, inasmuch as David, having been slandered, fled.
1:3409
But long afterward came the matters concerning the wife of Uriah, and long afterward came his becoming king over all, after the last anointing — and this was the third.
1:3410
And long afterward came the matters concerning the wife of Uriah.
1:3411
He had not yet become king when Doeg slandered him for having taken the loaves and the sword of Goliath.
1:3412
The ordering of the psalms, then, is not sought according to the sequence of the times, but according to the achievements, according to the events.
1:3413
五十這數目有其特別之處;
The number fifty has something special about it;
1:3414
and because of his virtues the psalm of confession was assigned to him.
1:3415
In accordance with the number fifty repentance is brought to completion.
1:3416
Thus, for instance, the Savior, when the Pharisees murmured concerning the woman who had been cleansed by him and had come to wash his feet with her own tears and to wipe them with her own hair, puts forward [this parable]:
1:3417
「有一個債主,有兩個欠債的人;
'There were two debtors to a certain creditor;
1:3418
the one owed fifty denarii, the other five hundred.'
1:3419
你要留意,他把兩個悔改之人的數目都安排在「五」上;
And observe that he arranged the number of both penitents in fives;
1:3420
因為五百這數目與五十這數目有親屬關係;
for the number five hundred has a kinship with the number fifty;
1:3421
for fifty multiplied tenfold becomes five hundred.
1:3422
所以,正是按著關乎這數目的某種奧祕,那認罪的詩篇也被安置在此處;
In accordance, therefore, with some such mystery concerning the number, the psalm of confession too was appointed in this [place];
1:3423
for the number is indicative of mercy.
1:3424
Indeed, at any rate, those who have won a war exact a fiftieth as tribute.
1:3425
And on behalf of those who did not fight but guarded the baggage, those who fought and prevailed set aside a fiftieth.
1:3426
And the priest, beginning his priestly service from twenty-five years of age, continues until fifty years of age.
1:3427
After fifty years he no longer performs the liturgy, but guards the tabernacle.
1:3428
And the passage shows that one must first accomplish and perform all things in priestly fashion and become a perfect priest, so as to arrive at the number fifty, and then guard the things in the tabernacle.
1:3429
And the passage teaches that in one's progress there is need of works and of increase, but when a person has been made perfect, he ought to guard what he has accomplished.
1:3430
Just as one who is recovering health is in the process of being made well, being in the process of having remedies applied to him.
1:3431
But when one has recovered health in a settled, habitual state and has attained a firm tabernacle, thereafter he applies to himself things that preserve health—not things that bring health back, but things that guard it.
1:3432
For this reason God also placed Adam in paradise to cultivate it and to keep it.
1:3433
To cultivate, that it might bear fruit, that it might bring forth perfect fruits; but thereafter to keep the plants that have borne fruit.
1:3434
Just as cultivating and keeping signify these two things—cultivating being the active practice of the things of virtue and of the knowledge of the truth, and keeping being the things that have been brought to perfection—so too the priest, for as long as he falls short of the number fifty, is engaged in the exercise of the priesthood.
1:3435
But when he has fulfilled this number and has been proven perfect, then thereafter he keeps the things within the tabernacle.
1:3436
He himself no longer labors, but while others labor he himself receives the firstfruits and takes the tithes.
1:3437
Now this number is the beginning of the second square number.
1:3438
A square number is one measured by equal factors—twice two, thrice three.
1:3439
那麼這數乃是七乘七;
This one, then, is seven times seven;
1:3440
and thereafter the addition of the unit lays down the beginning of another—seventy times seven.
1:3441
For this reason also, concerning repentance, when the Savior was asked by Peter,
1:3442
'How many times does one sin? Up to seven?' he says,
1:3443
'I do not say to you up to seven only, but even seventy times seven.'
1:3444
Seven times seven is a square.
1:3445
而這數有聖潔的邊;
And this has holy sides;
1:3446
因為七這數已多次被我們證明,是從各方面都蒙福的;
for the number seven has often been shown by us to be blessed on every side;
1:3447
for God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, and:
1:3448
'The eyes of the Lord that look upon all the earth are seven.'
1:3449
Not that I say seven in the sense of three and four, but that his oversight and regard are most complete.
1:3450
照樣,在七七節中,第五十日也被守作節期,無論按舊約還是新約;
So too, then, in the feast of weeks the fiftieth day is celebrated, both according to the Old Covenant and the New;
1:3451
for you have it in the Acts of the Apostles that:
1:3452
聖靈被賜下,聖靈各樣的恩賜被量給眾人;
of the Spirit it was given, and the various gifts of the Spirit were meted out;
1:3453
for it was necessary to pass beyond the number seven times seven and to take the beginning of another such number, and thus to be brought to perfection.
1:3454
The number fifty, then, is employed in many great matters.
1:3455
The seventh month again is perfect.
1:3456
For the making of tabernacles takes place in the seventh month among the Hebrews.
1:3457
Again, for six years the land was sown, but in the seventh year it lay unsown.
1:3458
That year remained reserved for the poor.
1:3459
And there too again, if some festival is held every seven years, that year likewise is a sabbatical year.
1:3460
Seven times seven is also celebrated in what is called by the Hebrews the Jubilee.
1:3461
The Jubilee is the fiftieth year.
1:3462
Every fifty years certain festivals were kept.
1:3463
And this year had more than the other years.
1:3464
We were saying that there are also seventh years and seventh months.
1:3465
In the fiftieth year, called the Jubilee, there was also a cancellation of debts.
1:3466
The creditors, being led to this by the law, showed grace; they canceled debts according to their ability, and they exacted no interest.
1:3467
The houses that had been sold and the fields became redeemable in the fiftieth year.
1:3468
If the seller had the means to pay the price, his own possession which he had formerly held was restored to him.
1:3469
Now the word hinted at this: that even if someone should sell off his own manner of life—and often one's manner of life is called a house, as in the saying:
1:3470
'If the one who hears the words of Jesus does them, he builds his own house.'
1:3471
Since the midwives feared God, they made for themselves houses.
1:3472
Is it, then, concerning only women who act as midwives that these things were primarily written?
1:3473
For they did not have a house before either.
1:3474
Through the fear of God they built these houses, namely the upright ways of life, those set aright with the fear of God.
1:3475
And that field too, which someone formerly had and neglected in the care of it, he takes up again so as to sow once more his good seed in it—to sow unto righteousness, to reap unto the fruit of life, to gather from it the produce of righteousness.
1:3476
Never, then, look merely to the titles of the psalms.
1:3477
This one, then, belongs to the time before he was anointed.
1:3478
If you inquire into the title, this one ought rather not to be the twenty-sixth.
1:3479
此外,押沙龍起來背叛他的父親,是在關乎烏利亞之事以後;
Furthermore, Absalom rose up against his father after the affair concerning Uriah;
1:3480
就數目的次序而言,它排在第五十篇之後;
so far as concerns the order of numbers, it comes after the fiftieth;
1:3481
yet that psalm is inscribed as the third.
1:3482
We look to the powers of the numbers and thus grasp the order of the meanings, not simply to the numbers themselves.
1:3483
Someone asked me about the phrase 'all wisdom is from the Lord,' and I said that if it says 'all wisdom' it means every kind according to species, but if it says 'all the wisdom' it means one entire whole.
1:3484
Just as, if we say 'all the city,' we mean one whole; but when we say:
1:3485
'every city is governed according to law,' we do not mean one, but all the cities.
1:3486
The numbers too, then, are set within things, placed there by none other than God.
1:3487
And having made all things in wisdom, he made the numbers also in wisdom.
1:3488
請告訴我:你以為以賽亞書中那段話幾時才應驗呢?經上說:「到了七十年,推羅必復歸原狀。」這七十年當從何時算起呢?在這裡也不是要我們按字面的歷史來領會,而是指公義之日頭的七十個運行週期,七十年;
For tell me: when do you think the passage in Isaiah is fulfilled? 'And it shall come to pass,' it says, 'after seventy years Tyre shall be restored to its former state.' From when are the seventy years to be counted? Not here either, that we should take it according to the literal history, but seventy circuits of the Sun of righteousness, seventy years;
1:3489
for the Sun makes his circuit, illuminating souls and manifesting the teachings of the truth and sending forth his rays.
1:3490
When, therefore, someone is brought to perfection and rests, having arrived at the end of his progress, then the seventy years are complete for him.
1:3491
In relation to the text before us this digression is not fitting, but in relation to the question it was necessary.
1:3492
'Hear, O Lord, my voice, with which I have cried out.'
1:3493
I cried out my voice to you, asking for those things which it were good for me to have granted.
1:3494
Praying, I cried aloud to you as I again departed, that you might hear this voice, with which I cried out to you.
1:3495
For not everyone who cries out according to the inner man cries out to God, but only the one who speaks the things of God, who brings his petition before him.
1:3496
所多瑪人也呼喊,卻不是向神呼喊;
The men of Sodom also cry out, but not to God;
1:3497
'The cry of Sodom and Gomorrah has been multiplied, and their sins are exceedingly great.'
1:3498
And concerning the Ninevites it is said that:
1:3499
'The cry of their wickedness has gone up'—the multitude of their wickedness.
1:3500
'I waited for it to do righteousness, but it produced a cry.'
1:3501
The outcry of the Sodomites, therefore, is an intensification of wickedness.
1:3502
But he who prays cries out to God when he raises an intensified voice, when he prays concerning great things and not concerning trifling and contemptible matters — he who asks that good things be given to him.
1:3503
But the other evangelist interpreted 'the good things' as the Holy Spirit.
1:3504
For, writing of the very same passage, Matthew says:
1:3505
'He will give good things to those who ask him'; but Luke says:
1:3506
But the Spirit, being one, is a multitude of good things according to its various gifts of grace.
1:3507
For he who has the Holy Spirit has the gifts of the Spirit, which are many good things.
1:3508
And in its essence it is one, but in its conceptual aspects it is many good things.
1:3509
Just as God too is one according to essence,
1:3510
yet he is also spoken of as many according to different conceptions:
1:3511
良善的、不改變的、不變易的、源泉、光;
good, unchangeable, unalterable, fountain, light;
1:3512
and again the Savior likewise, being one in respect of his substance, is called Life, Truth.
1:3513
'Ask,' he says, 'for the great things, and the small things shall be added unto you.'
1:3514
So that he who asks for small things does indeed speak to God, but not with an intensified voice.
1:3515
'Ask,' he says, 'for the heavenly things, and the earthly things shall be added unto you.'
1:3516
所以,那主要為著可感之物而獻上禱告的人,並不向神呼求;
He, therefore, who sends up a prayer principally concerning things perceptible to the senses does not cry out to God;
1:3517
but he who asks for those things that are truly great and heavenly and that make one godlike cries out to God.
1:3518
And the outcry is the act of understanding.
1:3519
'Have mercy on me and hear me': to you my heart has spoken.
1:3520
My heart awaits the mercy from you and says to you, 'Hear me.'
1:3521
These things are reciprocal to one another:
1:3522
he who is shown mercy by God is heard, and he who is heard is shown mercy.
1:3523
It is not possible, therefore, to say that the one comes before the other.
1:3524
Yet the hearing precedes the showing of mercy —
1:3525
though not at all prior in time.
1:3526
And just as it is not possible to say that surface comes before color, nor color before surface —
1:3527
若有顏色,就有表面;
if there is color, there is surface;
1:3528
若有表面,它就已被賦上顏色;
if there is surface, it has been colored;
1:3529
表面在觀念上被視為在先;
the surface is conceived as prior;
1:3530
there must be a surface, so that in this way there may be color.
1:3531
But this 'must' I take not according to time, but according to conception.
1:3532
In every utterance three persons are signified: the one speaking, the one to whom he speaks, and the one about whom he speaks.
1:3533
The person, then, is that of the one praying, who now makes his declaration.
1:3534
And he declares his supplication to none other than God.
1:3535
'I have sought out your face.'
1:3536
'Have mercy and hear me.'
1:3537
'Your face' — it is not only now that I have entreated the word:
1:3538
'Cause your face to shine, and we shall be saved.'
1:3539
And 'if I have sought out' signifies an intensified seeking.
1:3540
'Your face, O Lord, will I seek.'
1:3541
'My heart, O Lord, will seek your face.'
1:3542
Even if I have sought it out and possessed it shining upon me, yet I do not cease at this point.
1:3543
'Turn not away your face from me.'
1:3544
那健全並保存其視覺能力的眼睛,當光臨在時,便是光,並渴慕它,也永不厭足於它;
The eye that is healthy and preserves its power of vision, when light is present, is light and has a longing for it, and is never sated with it;
1:3545
因為光對眼睛而言是永不厭足的;
for light is insatiable to the eyes;
1:3546
it is sweet to the eyes, as Ecclesiastes says.
1:3547
But no one takes satiety of what is sweet.
1:3548
有些甘甜之物會招致厭足,例如從蜂蜜而來的甜味;
There are sweet things that beget satiety, such as the sweetness that comes from honey;
1:3549
but that which comes from light knows no satiety — especially when the sight retains its own proper power.
1:3550
Now, from things perceptible to the senses on to things intelligible:
1:3551
那內在之人的眼睛,或說那些眼睛,對神的面永不厭足,也不會感到滿足;
the eye of the inner man, or its eyes, are never sated nor take satiety of the face of God;
1:3552
for as it ever shines forth it illumines and increases even the longing.
1:3553
'[Set upon] us the light of your face, O Lord.'
1:3554
But the light of the sun, or of perceptible light quite simply, does not remain.
1:3555
If, then, someone should withdraw from seeing the light or should close his eyes, he does not have it imprinted upon him.
1:3556
But the intelligible light is seen to remain with the one who has been enlightened; it cannot be cast off.
1:3557
'Turn not aside in anger from your servant.'
1:3558
There is a time when God seems to turn aside, but not in anger.
1:3559
有人或許以為神偏離了約伯,那時他的家財、他的兒女、以及他的身體都被交在那求索者的手中;
Some might have thought that he turned aside from Job, when his possessions and his children and his body were delivered over to the one who had demanded them;
1:3560
but this did not happen in anger.
1:3561
May it not befall me, from my own slothfulness, that in anger you should turn your face aside from me.
1:3562
May such things not be done by me that you, being provoked to anger, should turn aside from me.
1:3563
May I not be so provoked to anger as to be deprived of your presence.
1:3564
'Be my helper, cast me not utterly away.'
1:3565
To cast utterly away, to reject, to send away — these are one and the same.
1:3566
For in Isaiah it is recorded thus:
1:3567
並且要留意這用詞的精確;
And observe indeed the precision of the wording;
1:3568
'to become' does not always signify a coming-into-being, but it indicates that which the addition intends.
1:3569
And here is added 'be my helper.'
1:3570
For surely he who becomes a helper to someone does come into being?
1:3571
I have said elsewhere as well that expressions which suggest coming-into-being, if they are stated in an absolute sense, signify a work of creation.
1:3572
'All things came to be through him' is equivalent to saying:
1:3573
'In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth.'
1:3574
What did he make? Just this very thing: heaven and earth.
1:3575
'Be my helper, do not forsake me' — this is what it says:
1:3576
it signifies a relation of the helper toward the one being helped.
1:3577
'Become my teacher' surely does not signify the bestowing of substance, but rather 'become a teacher to me.'
1:3578
Of such a kind, too, are the things said concerning the Saviour.
1:3579
'Consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, faithful to him who made him.'
1:3580
He made him an apostle; he did not simply make him, but made him an apostle.
1:3581
The substance of the Son is eternal.
1:3582
但祂成為使徒是在那時發生的,就是當有些人離祂遠去的時候;
But his becoming an apostle takes place at that time when certain ones have withdrawn away from him;
1:3583
for he is sent to those who are far off.
1:3584
And observe that his becoming an apostle coexists with certain ones being far from him, having been estranged from him.
1:3585
Again, he becomes a high priest when there were those on whose behalf he exercises his priesthood.
1:3586
And it was not then that the subsistence of the Saviour came to be, as those men suppose, but rather the rule, the high priesthood.
1:3587
So too, again, in the Acts of the Apostles it says:
1:3588
'Let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made him both Lord and Christ.'
1:3589
He becomes Lord of those who take refuge in serving him.
1:3590
So if even today someone begins to serve him, today he has become Lord to that person.
1:3591
並且,若有人將自己順服於祂的國度與祂的祭司職分之下,今天基督就成了他的基督;
And if someone submits himself to his kingdom and to his priesthood, Christ has today become his — Christ to him;
1:3592
for 'Christ' indicates nothing other than a king and a high priest.
1:3593
Indeed, at any rate, Aaron was called the anointed of the Lord, and the kings were called the anointed ones of the Lord, and concerning Saul himself it is said:
1:3594
'The Lord is witness, and his anointed is witness.'
1:3595
'Touch not my anointed ones.'
1:3596
'Be my helper, then, do not cast me away with contempt;'
1:3597
'God will thrust them away, because they did not hearken to him, and they shall be wanderers among the nations.'
1:3598
When they withdraw, they are cast away with contempt, being carried here and there, no longer possessing any firm resolve.
1:3599
But he attaches the cause to us:
1:3600
it is not a thing willed by him to thrust certain ones away from himself.
1:3601
Yet it is willed by him to send away those who have not hearkened, lest he should seem to hate virtue.
1:3602
'And since they did not hearken, according to the multitude of their iniquities thrust them out, for they have embittered you, O Lord.'
1:3603
This is what being cast away with contempt means.
1:3604
They say too that the word is derived from something, so that they say the filings of iron are called 'kora.'
1:3605
May I not, then, become such a one as to be cast away with contempt.
1:3606
I wish to be a vessel of gold, or a vessel of bronze, and by no means the scrap-filing that is discarded.
1:3607
This is what is sent out and cast away.
1:3608
'And do not forsake me, O Lord, God, my Saviour.'
1:3609
Since you are indeed my Lord — for I serve you — and my God — since I am a child of Abraham, and you are the God of Abraham and of Isaac and, evidently, of those descended from them — I stand as a servant toward a master, as one who worships genuinely toward God, being tended, as one being saved toward a Saviour.
1:3610
Since, therefore, you have become all these things to me, you will not forsake me.
1:3611
'For my father and my mother have forsaken me.'
1:3612
I wish to bring in an evangelical saying, so that from it this may be understood.
1:3613
Both the old Scripture and the Gospel and the very exhortations of the Saviour teach us to love father and mother.
1:3614
If someone hates a father, he does not hate him as a father, but as an impious man; and he hates him not in so far as he is a father, but in so far as he is impious.
1:3615
And the one who loves a father loves him for this reason, that he is truly a father — when he thus nurtures him in fear and admonition, when he nurtures him as a righteous man.
1:3616
And a righteous father nurtures well.
1:3617
I have said, then, that nearly all the Scriptures speak concerning the honour of parents and punish those who desert them:
1:3618
'He who speaks evil of father or mother shall die the death.'
1:3619
'He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.'
1:3620
然而你要尊敬父母、愛你的父親和母親——但當這愛超過了神,便要受責備;
And yet, honour your parents and love father and mother — but when it is above God, it is condemned;
1:3621
for when it is set before one to confess the truth with persecution hanging over him, and when he says:
1:3622
'Because of the old age of my father and mother I do not wish to die,' and betrays it, he has loved his parents above God, he has preferred his disposition toward his parents over piety toward God.
1:3623
And this is what is condemned.
1:3624
In the Gospel, at any rate, the Saviour says:
1:3625
'Turning,' it says, 'Jesus said to the crowds:
1:3626
If anyone wishes to come after me, unless he hate his father and his mother and his wife and his brothers and his children, he cannot be my disciple.'
1:3627
'You laid down honour concerning parents as a law, and promised me great rewards, saying:
1:3628
Honour your father and your mother, that it may be well with you and that you may be long-lived upon the earth — how is it that now you say:
1:3629
Unless one hate father and mother, he cannot follow me?' Here 'hatred' is used in a different sense — namely, not to prefer anything above God.
1:3630
When it is set before one to love God above all — especially in a time of struggle, in a time of persecution — the love of God is to be preferred above all things.
1:3631
If a parent, or a parent's old age, pulls you back, prefer God, since otherwise you cannot follow me.
1:3632
To hate father and mother, then, does not signify that hatred by which we reject and abhor, but according to the sense of not preferring them above God.
1:3633
So too the wife and the children, so too the brothers.
1:3634
And further, he will even hate his own soul, it says.
1:3635
He hates his own soul who undergoes death for the sake of martyrdom — but for the sake of the Saviour:
1:3636
'He who hates father for my sake' — not absolutely.
1:3637
The Saviour is to be preferred above all.
1:3638
So then, just as someone hates even a mother for the sake of the Saviour —
1:3639
this hatred brings no blame.
1:3640
The one who has thus hated his parents on account of the Saviour is forsaken by them.
1:3641
'For my father and my mother have forsaken me.'
1:3642
Concerning the forsaking: 'Unto the end;
1:3643
a psalm of a song at the dedication of the house.'
1:3644
In both respects, both according to the soul and according to the body, a resurrection takes place.
1:3645
'Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine upon thee.'
1:3646
在此,犯罪的人就是死人;
Here he that sins is dead;
1:3647
'for the soul that sins, this one shall die;'
1:3648
sin, when it is fully accomplished, brings forth death to him that sins.
1:3649
所以,神喚醒這人歸回他墮落之前所有的生命;
This man, therefore, He rouses to the life that was his before the fall;
1:3650
「跌倒的人豈不再起來嗎?」而且身體也有復活;
'Shall not he that has fallen rise again?' And there is also a resurrection of the body;
1:3651
for it was not his fashioning that was a fall, but the corruption that came after his fashioning.
1:3652
For this reason, therefore, it too rises again.
1:3653
And in general we say this:
1:3654
good things take precedence over evil things.
1:3655
的確,拙劣的手藝是在技藝之後,錯謬是在正確之後,悖逆是在律法之後;
Indeed, at any rate, bad craftsmanship comes after craft, and error after correctness, and disobedience after law;
1:3656
for disobedience is nothing other than a transgression of a commandment.
1:3657
再者,凡稱為「偏離」的,總是受責備的;
And again, that which is called 'para-' (beside, awry) is always blamed;
1:3658
he thinks awry, he looks amiss, he steps aside (transgresses).
1:3659
For consider where the argument tends:
1:3660
有理性的受造之物之所以被造,是為要擁有美德;
the rational being came into existence in order that it might possess virtue;
1:3661
for it did not come into being that it might possess vice, since in that case vice itself would be the virtue, and virtue would be a falling away from it.
1:3662
In so far, then, as it concerns life in matter, almost all begin from sin.
1:3663
倘若承認這一點,就是靈魂在物質中的生命之前從未存在過,那麼萬事便是從惡德開始的,如此罪就不再是罪,反倒成了美德;
And if this be granted, that the soul never lived before its life in matter, then things began from vice, and sin is not sin but rather virtue;
1:3664
for no one who acts according to nature and does what is proper to himself is said to sin.
1:3665
Those, therefore, who pursue crafts and act in accordance with them, when they do what is proper to the craft, are not said to think awry, are not said to transgress.
1:3666
There has come to pass, therefore, a building of the house that had fallen, and a return of the captivity.
1:3667
According to the former consideration we say that the dweller and the house are the same thing.
1:3668
But it can also be understood thus, so that you may take it more universally:
1:3669
眾信徒的聚集,就是教會,乃是那殿;
the assembly of the faithful, the Church, is the house;
1:3670
好叫你知道人當如何在神的家中行事為人;
that you may know how one ought to conduct oneself in the house of God;
1:3671
'I have loved the beauty of thy house.'
1:3672
And those who dwell there are these faithful ones, who live their lives according to virtue.
1:3673
But if the soul were the house, then the earnest reasonings, those congenial to it, are the dwellers.
1:3674
And at the same time both the building and the dedication take place.
1:3675
Now there is a renewal when those who had formerly become outside of it receive again their dwelling within it.
1:3676
We said, when we began the twentieth psalm, that there are psalms, there are songs, there are psalms that are songs, and songs that are psalms.
1:3677
And I was saying that the psalm signifies action (praxis).
1:3678
For the one who plays the psalm strikes the instrument called the psaltery.
1:3679
然而,即使沒有琴瑟,也是能歌唱的;
But it is possible also to sing even without a psaltery;
1:3680
for he who employs contemplation alone—to conceive God, to know the truth and to partake of it, that you may take it in itself—since he assuredly has action being sung: when someone, for instance, contemplates and applies himself with knowledge, considering what knowledge is, what the mystery of the kingdom is, this man sings.
1:3681
再者,凡是行動、卻僅僅止步於行動這一點上的人,這些人是在彈詩;
Again, all who act and stand only at this very point of acting, these play the psalm;
1:3682
as we were saying also concerning the rams, that they have a vigorous life, but neither the life they have nor the particular works of their life are elevated (raised to higher contemplation).
1:3683
But he who both plays and acts and sings and contemplates: if he begins from acting, it is 'a psalm of a song'; but if from contemplating, 'a song of a psalm'.
1:3684
我們也見這些事實際發生;
And we see these things happening;
1:3685
for often certain persons, wishing to contemplate, fix their attention upon the virtues and their works, and from this very attending they receive the power to accomplish, and so come to acting.
1:3686
'Having desired wisdom, keep the commandments;'
1:3687
他謹守了誡命,他就彈了詩;
he kept the commandments, he played the psalm;
1:3688
and again, having played, he has it (wisdom) supplied to him.
1:3689
It happens, then, sometimes to begin from the song and for the psalm to succeed it, and again the psalm, having made a way for the soul, brings the song once more.
1:3690
所以,倘若那開端以及開端的最初構想是出於技藝之工,那便是「詩之歌」;
If, then, the beginning and the initial conception of the beginning arise from a work of craft, it is 'a psalm of a song';
1:3691
but when someone, having begun from contemplation, receives a love for living according to virtue, it is 'a song of a psalm'.
1:3692
It was fitting, therefore, that for the dedication of the house the one being brought in to dedicate the house should thus dance (in choral joy).
1:3693
This is called reciprocal consequence (mutual sequence).
1:3694
Now there is (simple) sequence when the one follows upon the other and does not convert (is not reversible).
1:3695
But if the sequence is reversible, so that the former, which led, becomes the following, and the following becomes the leading, it is reciprocal consequence.
1:3696
And even when the hymn-writer speaks, he is manifestly speaking out of the Holy Spirit.
1:3697
說「一個人在說話」與說「一個有知識的人在說話」,並不是一回事;
It is not the same thing to say that a man speaks and that a knowledgeable man speaks;
1:3698
for when we say that the one making the announcement is a man, human are the things announced; but when we say he is knowledgeable, the things are knowledgeable (of true science).
1:3699
Knowledge sounds within him, and he becomes, as it were, a servant of knowledge.
1:3700
The one who is competent (sufficient), then, sings with his hand this psalm or this song, the psalm of the song or the reverse.
1:3701
And everyone who is practical (active in deeds) is competent with the hand.
1:3702
然而,救主尤其具有這能力;
But the Saviour especially possesses this;
1:3703
for the others also receive their competence from Him.
1:3704
John, at any rate, looking to His greatness, said:
1:3705
'I am not worthy to loose the strap of His sandals.'
1:3706
Again, if competence is given by Him, 'our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant.'
1:3707
If those who have been urged toward this and have received a love for the thing become imitators of Christ, seeing Him working competently, they too work competently, according to what is attainable by them.
1:3708
我在開始講詩篇時曾說,那論到救主所取的人性的話,可以論到每一個效法祂的人;但那論到祂為獨生子與神之道的話,卻斷然不能;
And I said, when beginning the psalms, that the things spoken concerning the man whom the Saviour assumed might be said concerning every imitator of Him, but not indeed those things which are said concerning Him as the only-begotten Son and God the Word;
1:3709
for they might be said—I do not say concerning men, but not even concerning principalities, concerning nothing at all that is created.
1:3710
所以,如今所說的這些話,乃是合乎救主的人性;
The things now being said, therefore, fit the manhood of the Saviour;
1:3711
Therefore others too are able to do these things.
1:3712
'I will exalt Thee, O Lord, for Thou hast upheld me.'
1:3713
What I have often said, I will say now again:
1:3714
the things spoken concerning God are to be understood as of God, but the things spoken concerning men are to be understood as of men.
1:3715
然而有時論及人所說的話,若不是就人為必死的、就人為人而言,而是就人為有理性的而言,也可以論及天使,總而言之,可以論及一切理智的本體;
Yet sometimes the things said concerning men, if they be said not insofar as men are mortal and insofar as they are men, but insofar as they are rational, may also be said concerning angels and, in a word, concerning every intellectual being;
1:3716
因為按理智而言,人與天使同屬一個本體,按其能夠達到完全、如同在天上的父完全一樣的可能性而言也是如此;
for according to that which is intellectual, man is of one substance [with them], according to his capacity for becoming perfect as the Father who is in heaven is perfect;
