Next after these he adds, 'The poor shall eat and be filled, and those who seek him shall praise the Lord; their hearts shall live for ever and ever. All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before him, for the kingdom is the Lord's, and he is ruler over the nations.'
By these words, very consistently, he proclaims the achievements after his resurrection, which have also been fulfilled through the calling of all the nations, and through the election of men at the ends of the inhabited world — the outcomes of which, being observed with our own eyes, would be evidences confirming all that is said through the psalm.
And we, again, are the poor — whom, being poor according to God, the saving Word nourishes with the intelligible and rational bread, and by the life-giving nourishments of souls provides us with eternal life. Therefore the psalm says, 'The poor shall eat and be filled, and those who seek him shall praise the Lord; their hearts shall live for ever and ever.'
And the epilogue also of the whole prophecy, added after everything, says, 'The generation to come shall be told of the Lord, and they shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, whom the Lord has made' — plainly foretelling the people from the nations, and the generation established upon the earth through our Savior Jesus Christ.
For who could this people be who is said to be born to God after these things, formerly not existing, nor having subsisted among men, but having come to be afterward? And what is the generation, not existing then, but said to be coming, except this Church established through our Savior in the whole world, and the new people from the nations — concerning whom the Holy Spirit also, through Isaiah, declared with wonder, saying, 'Who has heard such things, and who has seen thus? Has the earth been in travail in a single day, or has a nation been born at once?'
These things, then, we have run through and treated only in cursory fashion, since time drives us onward to other matters. But whoever gives heed to the exhortation of our Savior, who said, 'Search the scriptures, in which you think you have eternal life, and these are they which testify concerning me,' by plunging his mind into each phrase of the psalm, would hunt out the precise sense of the truth in what has been said.
