那些居於天界之境的人,將目光定睛於修道的勞苦之上,而非定睛於肚腹,也非定睛於對必朽之物的憂慮;
Those who dwell in the heavenly realm fix their gaze upon labors, not upon the belly nor upon anxiety for things that perish;
3-1:2
not like those who make their prayers for the sake of gain, supposing that piety is a means of profit; but with the mind's vision they partake of the nourishment of things on high—pure festal companies, encircled with light from the divine glory.
3-1:3
至於你自己,啊,操練諸德的奧義之徒歐羅吉烏斯啊,你以那至高之事的光輝滋養你聖潔的生命,藉著聚斂諸般思念而卸下肉體的重擔——你深知肉體之物會成為思念的食糧——你又如一位以勞苦之刺洞悉仇敵詭計的人,差派我作你善工的口,去抵擋那些思念。若非那愛的命令大膽得難以違抗,我本要推辭這趟航海般的渡越;
And you yourself, O Eulogios, initiate into the virtues, nourishing your sacred being upon the radiance of the highest things, and through the gathering together of your thoughts stripping off the burden of the flesh—knowing that the matter of the flesh becomes the food of the thoughts—and as one who has grasped the enemy's stratagems by the goad of labors, you appoint me to become a mouth for your works against them. And were it not a bold command of love to break, I would have declined such a sea-voyage of this crossing;
3-1:4
but since one ought rather to be persuaded by those of like soul, and not to set oneself against them,
3-1:5
be you for me the things toward God, that an utterance may be given me in the opening of my mouth; and I will be for you the things of obedience, that it may be granted you to reap the fruits of the sowing.
3-1:6
The first of the glorious contests is exile, especially when you go forth toward it even alone, athletically stripping off fatherland, kindred, and possessions, standing before the glorious contests.
3-1:7
If you thus begin, walking according to God upon the path of the beginning with fervent faith and a divine Spirit, and preserving this safe to the end of endurance, the soul will be as one whose wings of virtue are gilded over, departing from its own places and hastening to fly to heaven itself.
3-1:8
然而那惡的生養者卻設法剪去這種生活方式的翅膀,如在鏡中般在你面前映現你宗族所出之地,尤其是在因疾病而臨到的攻擊中;
But the begetter of evil contrives to clip the wings of this way of life, holding up before you as in a mirror the land from which your kindred came forth, especially in the assaults that befall through sickness;
3-1:9
and in the home-staying of your most fervent departure he draws you back for a little, until he discerns the soul growing seasick amid the afflictions; and then, bringing on the night of the thoughts, the night-raven darkens the soul against the ray of the better things.
3-1:10
But if he draws up his battle line against you when you are alone in the wrestling-school of the desert, and it happens that the body is wounded by sickness, all the more does he make your exile harsh to the soul,
3-1:11
他暗示說,德性之事乃在乎心態而非在乎地點,又說你若留在家中,享有從宗族而來的安慰,在那裡本可毫不費力地保全棄絕世俗的賞賜;
suggesting that the things of virtue are set right not by place but by manner, and that, having at home the comfort that comes from kindred, there you could without toil have preserved the prizes of renunciation;
3-1:12
在那裡,你的軟弱也必有溫柔的服事,而不像如今這般受苦與痛苦地昏厥;
there too would be a gentle service for your weakness, and not, as now, hardship and painful fainting;
3-1:13
尤其在這一切之中,款待之熱心在弟兄當中已變得稀少;
amid all this, especially since zeal for hospitality has grown scarce among the brotherhood;
3-1:14
因此他尤其說:『去吧,把喜樂與榮耀帶給你的宗族,你竟無情地把難以承受的哀傷撇給了他們;
wherefore he says above all: ‘Depart, bringing joy and glory to your kindred, to whom you have unfeelingly left behind unbearable grief;
3-1:15
for many, even without fleeing their fatherland, have chosen virtue from the midst of their kindred.’
3-1:16
But he who has put on the purple of afflictions in the battle line of exile, and is crowned in his labors with hope through faith and endurance, shakes off from things external the snow-flurries of these thoughts of thanksgiving; and the more they burrow to turn back the heart, so much the more let us drown them out with psalmody.
3-1:17
having emptied them out, and let them break through the thanksgiving that is in endurance—and so thereafter, with much license and from what is fitting, they would widen their snares.
3-1:18
Therefore let him who is beginning to lay hold of virtue reckon also the war that comes against it, lest, being found untrained, he be dragged down as one unprepared.
3-1:19
因為德性的勇敢即使在太平時也值得稱讚,但當戰爭臨到時,它的英勇就更加值得稱讚;
For the courage of virtue is praiseworthy even when there is peace, but its valor is exceedingly praiseworthy when war stands upon it;
3-1:20
因為這才是德性,它不僅藉所成就的事顯明,也藉那攻擊它的可怕之事顯明:那在無數爭戰中勝過受苦的人,乃是脫離情慾的人;而那聲稱自己擁有未經爭戰之德性的人,仍受情慾的轄制;
for this is virtue, made manifest not only through what it accomplishes, but also through the dread things by which it is warred upon: dispassionate is he who through very many wars has conquered suffering, but passion-ridden is he who claims to possess a virtue that is unwarred-against;
3-1:21
因為與那勞苦之德性所佈的戰陣相對應,仇敵的邪惡也擺開了陣勢;
for corresponding to the battle line of the virtuous generalship of labors, the wickedness of the adversaries is also drawn up in array;
3-1:22
a heart that has no war has been deprived of being in virtue.
3-1:23
For virtue (aretē) has been so named from valorous deeds (aristeia), as a name denoting action.
3-1:24
Virtue does not seek the praises that come from men, for it does not delight in honor, the mother of evils.
3-1:25
At any rate, the beginning of love of honor is the pleasing of men, and the end of it is pride.
3-1:26
因為那索求尊榮的人是高抬自己,這樣的人不曉得如何忍受輕蔑;
For he who demands honors exalts himself, and such a one does not know how to bear contempt;
3-1:27
the appetite for honor is a fantasy, for he who loves it imagines an inheritance for himself.
3-1:28
Let honor be for you the labor of the virtues, and dishonor the praise that comes by self-will; seek not glory from the flesh, you who are dissolving the passions of the flesh, but seek the better thing, and glory will be yours. He who wishes to be honored envies the one who outshines him,
3-1:29
and to this one he heaps up hatred through jealousy—he who is overcome by excessive honors wishes no one to be preferred above himself, but snatches the first places lest he appear inferior; he cannot bear to honor the man of repute when absent, but even in his own labors he boasts of low-creeping glory. Insult is to the lover-of-glory a most piercing slaughter, and he by no means escapes wrath from it.
3-1:30
Such a one serves a barbarian mistress, and has been sold to many masters—to arrogance, and envy, and jealousy, and the aforesaid choice band of spirits. But he who shatters the spirit of honor with humility will pull down the whole legion of demons; he who through humility offers himself as a slave to all will be conformed to Him who humbled Himself and took the form of a slave.
3-1:31
If you measure yourself by the smallest measure, you will not measure yourself against your companion; and he who uncovers the weakness of his soul with lamentations will not think great things about his own labors.
3-1:32
The demons bring meanness and insult upon the humble-minded, so that, not bearing the contempt, they may flee humility; but he who through humility nobly bears dishonors is rather lifted up by them to the height of wisdom.
3-1:33
David, when insulted, did not answer back, but even restrained Abishai from vengeance.
3-1:34
你也是如此,受辱時不要以辱還辱,反倒要恰當地安撫那要為你報仇的人;
And you too, when insulted, do not return insult, but rather rightly calm even the one who would avenge you;
3-1:35
要承受那侮辱——這是你的長進——並用嘴唇關上忿怒的門;
bear the insult—it is your advancement—and with your lips shut the door of wrath;
3-1:36
you shall not answer those who threaten at all, that by silence you may put to sleep the smoldering lips; then you will pain those who threaten and insult, when you put a bridle on your own jaws.
3-1:37
因為你藉著靜默,必不被那侮辱所吞吃;而當你忍耐地承受那侮辱者的放肆時,他反倒更被你的靜默所咬傷;
For you, by keeping silent, will not be devoured by the insult, while he is bitten all the more by your silence, when you patiently bear the insolence of the one who insults;
3-1:38
shake off the praise of men from within, that you may shake off before it the thought that loves display.
3-1:39
Watch over self-complacency especially in stillness, lest at any time, being magnified, you set at naught the one who behaved insolently.
3-1:40
A certain one of the brethren was insulted by a devout man, and having endured the injustice he went away both sharing in joy and in grief—joy, because being wronged he was insulted and was not provoked in return; grief, because the devout man was deceived and, having deceived, rejoiced.
3-1:41
Consider with me that the deceiver too suffered two things: in that he provoked one who altogether rejoiced, and in that, as for the one who was not provoked in return, he was rather grieved.
3-1:42
When the demons see that we are not inflamed at the same scraping of insults, then, standing by in stillness, they pry up the ruling faculty, so that with those toward whom we were at peace when present, we may grow insolent toward them when they are gone.
3-1:43
Whenever, then, you carry out contradiction or insult toward your brother, reckon yourself to have stumbled, lest while keeping stillness you find a battle of thoughts in your heart—one reproaching the manner of the insult, the other reproaching back that the dreadful things were done because you did not return insult.
3-1:44
Whenever provocation embitters the brethren in a cenobium, then the thoughts press in to call the solitary blessed, that, having emptied out long-suffering, they may also cut him off from love.
3-1:45
但那以恆久忍耐勝過忿怒、以愛勝過憂愁的人,便以雙重的英勇之舉,推翻了兩隻凶猛相爭的惡獸;
But he who overturns anger with long-suffering and grief with love overturns two evil beasts that war with rage by twofold acts of valor;
3-1:46
那懇求並屈膝,要驅散那被激怒者之忿怒的人,就把這二者都從自己身上趕走了,因為那在發怒之人中間締造和睦的人,乃是與忿怒之靈爭戰;
he who entreats and falls on his knees that he may drive away the anger of the one who has been provoked, drives them both away from himself, for he who makes peace among those who are angry wars against the spirit of anger;
3-1:47
然而那(被勸的人)卻要以同類之怒向這勸和者發怒,放肆地向他鼓動忿怒,因他把鄰舍之間的爭戰攬到了自己身上。但那為和睦緣故而擔當心高氣傲之人的,乃是勉力使自己成為和平之子;
but he will be wroth at this man with the wrath of his own kind, rousing it boldly against him, because he has taken upon himself the battle of his neighbors. Yet he who bears with the bold-hearted for the sake of peace forces himself to become a son of peace;
3-1:48
but the bond of peace is to be sought not among men only, but also in your body, and in your spirit, and in your soul.
3-1:49
For when you unite the bond of this triad of yours in peace, then, as one united by the commandment of the divine Trinity, you hear:
3-1:50
‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.’ For indeed, if by your labors you make at peace the flesh that lusts against the spirit, you will have renown of the beatitudes beyond the age, having conquered the war in your body that wars against the law of your mind and takes you captive to the law of sin that is in your members.
3-1:51
Great is the bond of peace, in which joy too is united, illuminating the eye of the understanding for the contemplation of better things. If, then, we acquire the peaceful joy that is in labors, we shall by it thankfully repel the hardships that come, and shall not admit the bellowing demon of grief, who, maiming us especially in afflictions, leaps upon the soul and prepares a place for the spirit of acedia, so that they may darken the soul and at the same time gather up the labors.
3-1:52
Let there be, then, written upon our heart as a law, the joy of peace, that sinks grief and drives away hatred and makes wrath vanish and dissolves acedia and exchanges sorrow.
3-1:53
For lurking in peaceful long-suffering, and lying as in a calm harbor upon thanksgiving and endurance, it is a sea of virtues, drowning the opposing array of the devil by the cross.
3-1:54
But consider with me that the opposite joy stands by in a troubled form, lest somehow, being overshadowed with one thing instead of another, you be deceived into holding it.
3-1:55
For the demons fashion themselves even into the likeness of spiritual gifts, in order that by the counterfeit shadow they may lead the mind astray.
3-1:56
For a spiritual joy comes upon the heart with no occasion set before it, because it finds the ruler of the godly grief lifted off its guard; and afterwards it delivers the soul to the spirit of grief, because it has made the soul captive of the spiritual joy.
3-1:57
And I say this too, as experience of the things in question dictated to one of the brethren: that in place of rejoicing in the Lord, the avenger introduces in its stead a joy of his own.
3-1:58
惡的愁苦有兩樣,與每一件工作相連:一樣臨到心上,卻看不出有甚麼可愁的緣由;另一樣則是被怪異的緣由所推,因而生出。但那按著神的憂愁,乃以眼淚召回靈魂,不接納那相反的喜樂與愁苦,卻為那將要來的死亡與審判而掛慮;
The griefs of evil are twofold, yoked to each work: the one comes upon the heart with no grievous cause being seen, the other is born thrust forward by strange causes; but the grief that is according to God recalls the soul with tears, not accepting the contrary joy and grief, but is anxious about the death that is to come, and the judgment;
3-1:59
and this little by little it gapes wide in expectation.
3-1:60
落空的慾望栽種愁苦;
Desires that have failed plant griefs;
3-1:61
但禱告與感恩使這些枯乾凋謝;
but prayers and thanksgivings wither these away;
3-1:62
between those who are angry, grief is shaken in the midst.
3-1:63
He, then, who first comes to his senses, if he rises from the passion and gives a hand to the other in apology, drives away the bitter grief.
3-1:64
Grief is a disease of soul and of flesh: the one it carries off as captive, the other it withers on the spot.
3-1:65
從相爭之事生出愁苦,從愁苦生出怒氣;從這些又生出狂亂與辱罵;
Out of contrarieties grief is begotten, and out of grief wrath; and from these are born delirium and reviling;
3-1:66
你若願一同踐踏愁苦與怒氣,就要擁抱愛的恆久忍耐,並披上那無惡之純真的喜樂;不要讓你的喜樂成為別人的愁苦;
if you wish to trample down grief and wrath together, embrace the long-suffering of love, and put on the joy of guilelessness; let your joy not be grief to another;
3-1:67
那因不義而喜樂的人,必在亨通時哀哭;而那忍受愁苦、無辜受苦的人,必要榮耀地歡躍;
he who rejoices in injustice will lament in his good fortune, and he who endures griefs, suffering unjustly, will splendidly exult;
3-1:68
for the things to come are contrary to those present.
3-1:69
In afflictions be thankful above all, for through them you perceive more clearly the grace of help.
3-1:70
For thus, shaking off the afflictions that come with thanksgiving, you will not dim the most radiant beauty of fortitude; whenever a demon dashes a scourge against your flesh, he is found to be the procurer of a very great reward for you, if you receive the blow as an occasion for thanksgiving.
3-1:71
因為你如此也必使他從你面前逃跑。為叫你的賞賜藉忍耐更豐盛地降下,你要使忍耐普遍貫穿你一切勇敢的勞苦,因為灰心懈怠也借各樣的惡,作對方的元帥向你爭戰,窺探你一切的勞苦並加以試探;凡它見不被牢牢釘在忍耐上的人,就把這人壓在自己之下、使之屈服;但若灰心懈怠之鬼在忍耐勞苦之前漸漸無力,那野獸便又以狂妄自大(自恃)咬齧那已成的善功;
For thus you will also put him to flight from you. And that your reward may rain down more abundantly through endurance, let your endurance be general over all your courageous labors, because through every kind of evil acedia too wages war against you as a counter-general, and spying out all your labors it tempts; and whomever it does not find nailed fast to endurance, this one it weighs down under itself and bends low; but if the demon of acedia grows faint against the endurance of labors, then again the beast bites at the achievement with self-conceit (presumption);
3-1:72
if, then, by the understanding of carefulness you drive this away, you will also drive away the vainglorious spirit in it at the time of the synaxis (assembly for prayer).
3-1:73
Whenever the spirit of acedia falls upon you, it votes that psalmody is burdensome to the soul, and casts up sloth as the opponent of zeal, so that, touching the flesh with haste, it may lay it down to recollection, as though it were worn out, forsooth, by some cause.
3-1:74
因此,每當我們夜間警醒時,不要把聚會交給灰心懈怠,免得鬼魔挨近,聚集思念的稗子,同時把它們撒種在心裡;
Whenever, then, we are awake by night, let us not lay down the synaxis to acedia, lest the demons standing by gather the tares of the thoughts and at the same time sow them down in the heart;
3-1:75
因為每當我們失去詩歌之聚會時,就召聚了思念的隊伍;
for whenever we lose the assembly of hymns, then we gather together the muster of the thoughts;
3-1:76
having been roused before the synaxis, let us train up beforehand in the heart thoughts of light, that, being made ready, we may with watchful understanding stand by the psalmody.
3-1:77
有時當在警醒中以急切之勢誦唱詩篇,有時則當在詩歌中以細嚼默想之法察驗它;
At one time the psalm is to be uttered with a rush in watchfulness, at another it is to be tested by lingering meditation in psalmody;
3-1:78
for according to the ambush of the adversary, we too must of necessity transform ourselves, because at one time they suggest that the tongue be driven on, when acedia encompasses the soul, and at another they incite the words to be sung melodiously, while the noetic eye takes its nourishment, as it were its strength, from the light.
3-1:79
For he who stretches himself out toward the vision of the things on high will receive a more keen-sighted eye, after the example of Elisha.
3-1:80
當一個敵對的思念挨近你的心時,不要藉禱告以彼求此(求別的事),乃要磨快眼淚的刀劍對付那仇敵;
When a hostile thought stands by your heart, do not, through prayer, seek one thing instead of another, but whet the sword of tears against the enemy;
3-1:81
for thus, if we dash most vehemently into the battle, we shall make it depart from us more swiftly.
3-1:82
你當與手中的工作一同愛慕美善(行善工),尤其是不忘禱告;
Love beauty (do good work) together with the work of your hands, and especially the remembrance of prayer;
3-1:83
for the former is not always possible, but the latter has the unceasing resource of activity.
3-1:84
In your work disturb the body, lest you also disturb together with it the heart's prayer.
3-1:85
Just as the outer man within us works with his hands so as not to burden anyone, so let the inner man work within the mind, so as not to burden the mind.
3-1:86
For the thoughts then offer their own activity to the soul, whenever they find it idle of the thoughts that are according to God.
3-1:87
你當耕耘你手中的工作,使之歸於愛人;又耕耘那理性官能的心思,使之歸於愛智慧,好叫前者作款待客旅之舉、並焚燒懶惰,後者作默觀的元帥、並驅逐思念;
Plough the works of your hands toward love of mankind, and the mind of the reasoning faculty toward love of wisdom, that the one may be a hospitality to strangers and a burning-up of sloth, the other a general of contemplation and a casting-out of thoughts;
3-1:88
let us rebuke the pleasures of the thoughts with boldness, turning all our anger against them, lest, receiving with pleasure the things from them, we become on the contrary gentle toward them.
3-1:89
你要預備自己作溫柔的人,又作爭戰的人——前者是向你的同類,後者是向那仇敵;
Prepare yourself to be gentle and a fighter—the one toward your own kind, the other toward the enemy;
3-1:90
因為忿怒之心的用處正在於此:照著敵意與那古蛇爭戰;
for in this lies the use of the irascible part: in fighting against the serpent according to enmity;
3-1:91
and in this lies also the fairness of the gentle man: in being long-suffering toward the brother according to love, and warring against the thought.
3-1:92
因此,願溫柔之人作爭戰的人,他的溫柔要與那些詭詐的思念分別開來,正如他的爭戰也要與那本性同類的人分別開來;
Let the gentle man, then, be a fighter, his gentleness being distinguished from the guileful thoughts, just as also his fighting is distinguished from those of his own kind by nature;
3-1:93
do not turn the use of the irascible part to that which is against nature, so as to be angry indeed at your brother, after the likeness of the serpent, but to befriend the serpent according to the consent given to the thoughts.
3-1:94
溫柔之人即使遭受可怕之事,也不離棄愛;
The gentle man, even if he suffers dreadful things, does not depart from love;
3-1:95
for on account of this he is long-suffering and forbears, is kind and endures.
3-1:96
因為若恆久忍耐屬乎愛,那帶著忿怒之爭鬥就不屬乎愛;
For if long-suffering belongs to love, fighting-with-rage does not belong to love;
3-1:97
for rage rouses up grief and wrath, but love diminishes the three.
3-1:98
你若在愛中有穩固的根基,就當顧念這愛,過於顧念那絆倒你的人;
If you have a firm foundation in love, attend rather to this than to the one who trips you up;
3-1:99
你要存敬畏與愛事奉神——以敬畏對待祂如同對待主宰與審判者,以愛對待祂如同對待愛人者與供養者;
with fear and with love serve God—the one as to a Master and Judge, the other as to one who loves mankind and a Nourisher;
3-1:100
he who has acquired the virtues of love takes captive the passions of the base; and he who has these three from the Holy Trinity—faith, hope, love—will be a triple-walled city, towered up with the virtues.
3-1:101
You will be shown to be loving not only in not taking from another, but you will be recognized as renunciant in giving unsparingly; in your giving of material things, strive to cast pure seeds, lest, instead of wheat, a nettle come forth for you.
3-1:102
In what you give, remember God, both the giver and the receiver, that He may reckon to you, with praises, the rewards of renunciation.
3-1:103
無產業的人,享有那無憂無慮之生活的愉悅;但愛產業的人,卻始終懷有掛慮,即財富帶來的痛苦;
The man without possessions has the pleasure of life free from care, but the lover of possessions has anxiety, the pain of wealth, throughout;
3-1:104
你若不把心交給對物質之事的掛慮,那時便能把那一群思念擄去;
then will you drive the populace of thoughts captive, when you do not give your heart to cares about material things;
3-1:105
then too will you bear the cross undistracted, when you deny the desire of acquiring; but the thought of material things divines old age for you,
3-1:106
and sicknesses, that it may divide your hope in God with money.
3-1:107
Let him who has chosen to practice renunciation be walled with faith, and made strong with love, and made firm with hope.
3-1:108
For faith is not an abandonment, but the substance of better things in the hope of endurance, and in the love of life.
3-1:109
Whenever you renounce all the outward material things, attend to the gloomy thoughts that reproach you with poverty, and bring upon you want and meanness and inglory, in order that the murderous ones may guilefully work in you a change of mind about so splendid a virtue.
3-1:110
因此,你若以爭戰的悟性留意,反倒會發現這事:藉著它們所用以羞辱你的那些事,你的冠冕正是藉這些被編成;
If, then, you give heed with the understanding of the contest, you will rather find this: that through the very things by which they reproach you, through these your crown is woven for you;
3-1:111
for indeed, in renouncing, you renounce for the sake of those very things by which, as contests, you are reproached.
3-1:112
not by mere exercise are the contests joined together, but in the wrestling of the thoughts too the matter of the crown is sought.
3-1:113
你當在心的審判台前審判那些思念,好叫那些強盜一被除滅,那盜首便要懼怕;
Judge the thoughts at the tribunal of the heart, so that, when the robbers are destroyed, the chief robber may be afraid;
3-1:114
for indeed he who is an exact examiner of the thoughts is also a true lover of the commandments.
3-1:115
因此,每當一個難以辨別的思念挨近你的心時,你就更要向它點燃猛烈的勞苦;
Whenever, then, a thought hard to discern stands by your heart, then kindle against it intense labors all the more;
3-1:116
for either, not bearing the heat as something hostile, it will run away, or it will endure this as being native to the straight way.
3-1:117
有時候,鬼魔把一個看似良善的思念投入心中,隨即又改頭換面,假裝反對這思念,為要叫你從那反對中,以為它們也知道你心中的盤算;
There are times when the demons, throwing a seemingly good thought into the heart, and immediately transforming themselves, pretend to oppose it, in order that, from the opposition, you may suppose that they also know the reflections of your heart;
3-1:118
不僅如此,更是要叫它們坐堂審判,審斷你的良心,彷彿那惡藉著那番反對,已被那善所勝過了;
and not only this, but that they may sit in judgment, judging your conscience, as though the evil had been overcome by the good through the opposition;
3-1:119
and there are times again when they hint at their own contrivance to you, that in your own eyes you may seem to be prudent.
3-1:120
When the thoughts transfer you to the place they have suggested that we love, then they make you repent again, that they may make us unstable on every side, and unfruitful.
3-1:121
Therefore let us not flit ourselves from place to place, but let us bend rather toward stillness and labors, because it is from our own slothfulness that the thoughts take their power against us.
3-1:122
But he who has known the trial of a thought, let him remain in the place in which he was called, with God; while he who has not known it walks still in conflict.
3-1:123
遷移地點,當朝向更屬靈的,而非朝向更安逸的;
Let the transfer of places be toward the more spiritual, and not toward the more restful;
3-1:124
因為忍耐、恆久忍耐與愛,在患難中獻上感恩;
for endurance and long-suffering and love give thanks in afflictions;
3-1:125
but acedia and frivolity and self-love rejoice in restful comforts.
3-1:126
The restless man is warred upon in his soul through the senses concerned with sights, but the lover of stillness, guarding the senses, wars against the thoughts.
3-1:127
因此,願你的主宰(治理的心思)將感官的秩序聚於律法的法規之下,免得你藉眼目與耳聞,為你的靈魂激起眾惡的鞭笞;
Let your ruler (governing mind), then, gather the order of the senses under the ordinance of the law, lest by look and by hearing you stir up scourges of evils for your soul;
3-1:128
existing in two substances, guard yourself in distributing to each its order, that the one may excel, and the other may not gainsay, and do not give your commands to the tyrant, for when this is given to its fire, you will pay back even the last farthing.
3-1:129
當你向情慾的緣由爭戰、使它們潰逃時,不要讓一個惡念高抬你,免得你不知不覺信了迷惑的靈,連神智也被攆出常軌;
When, warring against the causes of the passions, you put them to flight, let not an evil thought magnify you, lest somehow, having trusted a spirit of error, you be driven out of your senses also;
3-1:130
but seek to reckon up the excesses concerning the things in which you labor, that you be not robbed, through what is within, of the consummations of your achievements.
3-1:131
Some, having been well spoken of for their achievements, in time grew slack in their labors through acedia, and the good report passed on, but the labors were dissolved.
3-1:132
Some, hard-pressing themselves for the sake of the swelling pomp of good deeds, were reckoned great; and the conscience of the soul was ulcerated, while the disease of good report was enlarged, and the thoughts, leading the soul astray from its wounds, carried off the labors amid the good reports.
3-1:133
Whenever those most given to labor grow rich in honors from men, then at that very time the demons, having contrived dishonors, bring them on, so that, coming from the honors, they may not bear the dishonors, nor sustain the insults.
3-1:134
Whenever you give great repentance over your sins, then the thoughts, magnifying the contests of your labors, make your sins small, and often cover them with forgetfulness, or even signify that these have been forgiven, in order that, slackening in your labors, you may not reckon up the lamentations over your faults, to howl against them all the more.
3-1:135
But he who fights as a boxer to cut off the passions that have fallen upon him will marshal more men-at-arms of the passions to the battle.
3-1:136
but keep the remembrance of your sin—the mourning—toward your humbling, that, being humbled, you may of necessity cut off pride.
3-1:137
凡行過不法之事的人,若願此後以最美好的方式度日,就當藉著換取那更美之事,正面站立於他從前所行的相反之處;
If anyone of those who have done lawless things wishes to live afterward in the best way, let him stand directly opposite his deeds, by an exchange for the better things;
3-1:138
for indeed he who sets the directly opposite action against each wickedness shoots the dragon with the prudent quiver of the virtues; and the sharpest weapon of the beast is vainglory, shooting down the labors, which he who has forestalled it by the hidden generalships of his works has drawn near to bring down the whole head of the devil.
3-1:139
你當以靜默封住你勞苦的香料,免得它們被舌頭鬆開,被榮耀所劫掠;
Seal the spices of your labors with silence, lest, loosed by the tongue, they be plundered by glory;
3-1:140
你當把舌頭藏在禁慾操練的實際行徑之中;
hide your tongue in the practical manner of asceticism;
3-1:141
for indeed, by keeping silent, you would have your labors—those trustworthy fellow-livers—as witnesses of your life.
3-1:142
那從目前的勞苦中無人可向之作見證的人,就不要用舌頭為自己作見證;
Let him who has no one to whom to bear witness from his present labors not bear witness to himself by the tongue;
3-1:143
for some, having stripped themselves of the labors of hard discipline, as a cloak for their slothfulness compare in time the deeds of bygone years, unreliably furnishing as evident witnesses works that are not present.
3-1:144
正如你向人隱藏你的罪,照樣,也要向他們隱藏你的勞苦;
Just as you hide your sins from men, so also hide your labors from them;
3-1:145
因為那對抗心中隱秘之事的詭技——那些暗中的絆腳與相搏的角力——都豎起來抵擋它們(你的勞苦);
for indeed the counter-art of the hidden things of the heart—the secret trippings-up and the counter-wrestlings—prop themselves up against them;
3-1:146
but if we hide our transgressions with safety, while we uncover, to our peril, our labors against them, then in both we are doing the contrary.
3-1:147
But you are ashamed of the publicizing of shameful things, lest somehow what is profitable to your soul should bring reproach and contempt.
3-1:148
你也當懼怕誇耀你的勞苦,免得那討人喜歡的把柄給你帶來靈魂的毀滅;
Fear also the showing-off of your labors, lest somehow a man-pleasing accusation should bring upon you the ruin of the soul;
3-1:149
but if you reveal even to God alone the falls of your shame, do not reveal to men the contests against them, lest they be thought to be the crowns of victory.
3-1:150
那從恩典領受其勞苦之能力的人,不可以為自己擁有這能力是出於自己的力量;
Let those who receive the power of their labors from grace not suppose that they have this as from their own strength;
3-1:151
for the cause of all good things to us is the word of the commandments, just as the cause of evil things is the deceitful one of the castings-away.
3-1:152
因此,凡你所成就的善事,當向那善事的根源獻上感恩;
Whatever good things, then, you accomplish, offer thanksgiving to the cause of good things;
3-1:153
but whatever evils trouble you, cast them upon the originator of these.
3-1:154
To the end of every affair, assign thanksgiving to the Better One, that, your offering being presented lawfully, wickedness may be put to shame.
3-1:155
For he who has joined thanksgiving to his action will have the treasure of his heart impregnable, having towered up a double wall against wickedness.
3-1:156
這人值得稱讚,他把那認知的(默觀的)與那實行的結為一軛,好叫靈魂之境從這兩道泉源得著灌溉,以致生長德性;
Praiseworthy is this man, who has yoked the gnostic (contemplative) to the practical, that from both springs the region of the soul may be watered toward virtue;
3-1:157
因為那認知的,藉著默觀更美之事,給那心智的本質插上翅膀;而那實行的,則治死在地上的肢體——淫亂、污穢、邪情、惡念、惡慾;
for the gnostic gives wings to the noetic substance by the contemplation of better things, while the practical mortifies the members that are upon the earth—fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil, evil desire;
3-1:158
those, then, who are fenced about by the full armor through both of these will thereafter easily tread down the wickedness of the demons.
3-1:159
The demons make war on the soul through the thoughts, and those are warred against more grievously through endurance; and growing fearful, they thereafter approach the battle warily, dreading the strong general of the fight.
3-1:160
If you wish to play the general against the phalanx of the demons, fence the gates of your soul with stillness, and put your ear to the words of fatherly counsel, that you may then all the more learn to burn up the thorns of the thoughts, after you have hearkened to fatherly admonition.
3-1:161
Be not a judge of deeds, but an examiner of words.
3-1:162
...lest they draw you away from profitable admonition.
3-1:163
你不要拒絕受勸誡,即使你是個有知識的人(認知者);
Do not refuse to be admonished, even if you are a gnostic (man of knowledge);
3-1:164
for if the practical is unyoked from the gnostic, there is need of Him who yokes the harmony of the two kinds of virtues at the dread judgment-seat of the Judgment.
3-1:165
He who shakes the fatherly commandment out of his ear will also be disobedient to the lawful commandment; do not delight merely to talk of the achievements of the Fathers, but also demand of yourself to be a most diligent worker of them.
3-1:166
He who more diligently inquires what sort of thought is opposed to what sort of labor is found to be a craftsman in the wrestling against error; and in all your noetic labors, in whichever you fall short, the one who has stripped this one bare slips in in its place.
3-1:167
你當記得以勞苦的悟性看守那顆心,免得那對更美之事之掛念的遺忘,把它劫掠了,將它交給思念的擄掠;
Remember to keep the heart safe by the understanding of the labors, lest forgetfulness of the care for better things, having plundered it, deliver it to the captivity of the thoughts;
3-1:168
因為那遺忘從擄掠之中撲向邪惡,好叫那邪惡,趁心思被它偷去之時,得以輕易潛入;一個被偷離了神、又遠離記念的心思,也藉著外在的感官隨意犯罪;
for forgetfulness leaps upon wickedness from the captivity, so that, the mind being stolen away by it, this one (wickedness) may readily slip in; a mind stolen away from God, and removed far from remembrance, also sins indiscriminately through the outer senses;
3-1:169
for such a one is unable to discipline his hearing and his tongue, because he has let go from the outer things the love-charm of labors.
3-1:170
那愛側耳去聽人毀謗某某的人,這兩人乃與兩個彼此合作的邪靈一同作工;
He who loves to listen out for the one who blames so-and-so, the two work together with two co-working spirits;
3-1:171
for evil-hearing happens to be a fellow-worker of accusation, and they love one another to the destruction of the heart.
3-1:172
Fence your ears against slanders, lest you sin doubly together with them—accustoming yourself to a dreadful passion, and not checking those from their tongue-wagging.
3-1:173
那好譏誚的人劫掠靈魂中更美之事,以讒言鑽入一隻已腐朽的耳朵;
The mocker plunders the soul of better things, burrowing into a rotten ear with slanders;
3-1:174
但那躲開鄰舍辱罵之舌的人,也驅走了自己的辱罵;
but he who escapes the reviling tongue of his neighbor also puts to flight his own reviling;
3-1:175
he who lends pleasant ears to the reviler milks the poison of the beast into his ears.
3-1:176
不要讓你的耳朵嚐這苦毒的「解藥」,免得你不知不覺也為別人調製出這樣的東西;不要讓你的耳朵被讒言所迷惑,免得你被賣給情慾,淪為多種情慾的奴僕;
Let not your ear taste of this bitter antidote, lest somehow you too mix up such a thing for another; do not let your ear be bewitched by slanders, lest, sold to passion, you be enslaved to manifold passions;
3-1:177
因為眾情慾中的一個,一旦在你裡面找到地步,便把其餘的也帶進同一個羊圈;
for one passion out of the many, having found a place in you, brings in others also into the same fold;
3-1:178
then is the ruler (mind) enslaved by a multitude of evils, whenever, being yoked to a passion, it unyokes the labors.
3-1:179
那設法探查別人心思的人,實際上不察驗自己的行為;不要譏誚那已死的人,說他生前度日輕忽,免得你照那向活人養成的習慣,連對死人也成了苛刻的審判官;
He who tries to search out the deliberations of others does not in fact search out his own deeds; do not mock the one who has died as one who lived carelessly, lest, as from the habit formed toward the living, you become a bitter judge even of the dead;
3-1:180
do not hold to those who stumble with an arrogant thought that lifts you up as a judge, but attend to yourself with a sober thought, a tester of your own deeds.
3-1:181
Groan when you stumble, and do not puff yourself up when you do right; do not boast that you are not to be despised, lest you put on evil as an ornament.
3-1:182
因為有些人,既不能因敬虔而出名,便急切地至少要這樣因邪惡而出名;
For some, being unable to be known from piety, made haste at least to be known thus from wickedness;
3-1:183
and others, having grown great in envy, shoot off pretexts, and set at naught those who are stable in the virtues.
3-1:184
Some who are noised about among those round about them for base things clothe themselves in a venerable life, not that they may lament their base faults with labors, but that they may overshadow the rumors of the blame.
3-1:185
但不要因那欺哄你的人而沾沾自喜,也不要因受了欺哄而歡欣;
But do not preen yourself on the one who deceives you, nor exult in being deceived;
3-1:186
因為你若為著一個虛名而抓住那勤勉者的事,你就不是為神而作,乃是為人而作;不要對那不勞而度日的人縱容親暱,即或有大名為他招搖過市;
for if for the sake of a bare name you lay hold of the things of the diligent, you work not for God but for men; do not give free familiarity to the one who lives without labor, even if a great name is paraded for him;
3-1:187
there is a friend for the sake of countenance (favor of the face), and time becomes the accuser of this one.
3-1:188
Acquire a fearful friend who mocks (rebukes) you, that you may find a shelter for your faults; and what is envied in you, hide rather from the one who envies.
3-1:189
...lest, while taking heed, you be bitten, and siphon a bitter poison into your soul.
3-1:190
For this is the work of Satan: that he may inflame that one with envy, and consume you with bitterness.
3-1:191
But let us rather be humbled, and prefer such people in honor, taming them—even through the table—the disposition that has been made savage by jealousy.
3-1:192
Do not, as though from another person, blame your friend out of jealousy, so that, blaming him as though from another's mouth, you may make yourself out as innocent, and exalt yourself as blameless.
3-1:193
For this is a disguise of Satan, who from the person of the serpent blamed the Most High, that, as though from another's mouth forsooth, having attached his own envy to God, he himself might be reckoned free of envy.
3-1:194
Do not, wishing to have your brother as a subject-slave, try to seize upon a fault of his, lest you be found a fellow-worker of Satan.
3-1:195
Let him who has stumbled not watch for others either to speak or to stumble, that he may not be alone in having fallen into the evil—which very thing was also the first work of the devil's falling away.
3-1:196
倒要叫他作一個為自己所行荒謬之事而悔改的人;
But let him be one who repents over the absurd deeds he has done;
3-1:197
recognizing the lament of grief against them, he will also draw to himself the foremost stillness of labors, which shows to him the many-eyed contemplation of the virtues.
3-1:198
那以舌頭持守靜默的人,當對抗思念而作大丈夫;
Let him who keeps stillness with the tongue play the man against the thoughts;
3-1:199
因為靈魂的勇敢不僅顯明在口的靜默上,也顯明在對抗思念的英勇上,並顯明在面對侮辱與不公時的堅定上;
for the courage of the soul is shown not in the stillness of the mouth alone, but also in valor against the thoughts, and in steadfastness amid insults and injustices;
3-1:200
for from this place the dreadful scourges of the devil are shaken off in the encounters.
3-1:201
Let not the mouth alone be guarded, but also the heart, for then the eye of the soul is darkened by the eye of complacency, when the mind ceases.
3-1:202
Let your mind be maimed concerning the most shameful things, for the Lord makes such people wise as blind, but discerning concerning the most beautiful things, that it (the mind) may be blinded concerning the most evil things.
3-1:203
你且與我一同思想:淫亂有兩樣,分而結軛:身體的淫亂,與靈的淫亂;
Consider with me that there are two fornications, yoked in division: that of the body, and that of the spirit;
3-1:204
whenever a thought of fornication mixes with your spirit, then your soul keeps company with an image of error.
3-1:205
鬼魔把自己塑成女子的面貌,為要迷惑那靈魂與它交合;
A demon shapes itself with the face of a female, in order that it may bewitch the soul to mingle with it;
3-1:206
a fleshless demon wears a carving of a form, in order that by a licentious thought it may make the soul play the harlot.
3-1:207
Do not, then, veil yourself with a non-existent idol, lest you do the like also in the flesh; by a spirit of fornication such ones were led astray—those who do not scare off, by the cross, the inner adulteries of the spirits.
3-1:208
你當以禁食使那些思念受苦,叫它們不說淫亂,乃說飢餓;
Maltreat the thoughts with a fasting from foods, that they may speak not of fornication but of hunger;
3-1:209
with vigil of prayer set up a tear, that you may receive help in the present war.
3-1:210
In the time of the war of fornication, decline the invitations of hosts; and the stranger who arrives you will refresh by serving him, but you yourself, in a concealed manner, will fence yourself about with fasting.
3-1:211
願你從這兩件工作中所得的賞賜加倍,歸與每一位為德性緣故而行那實際善工的人;
Let your reward from both works be double, to each one who renders the practical for the sake of virtue;
3-1:212
do not eat with your brother for the belly's sake, but for Christ's sake lodge together in love.
3-1:213
Satiety of foods feeds the thoughts, and a drunkard waters sleep with fantasies.
3-1:214
Pleasure dies after the ravine of luxury, and the lecheries of the belly breathe their last in the tomb.
3-1:215
The labors of one's inheritance end in rest, but the ways of luxury end in burning.
3-1:216
He who withers the flower of the flesh by asceticism daily meditates in the flesh upon his own end.
3-1:217
願心的核算來量度身體,免得身體一受重創,那心也跟著疲乏;
Let the reckoning of the heart measure out the body, lest, when this is stricken, it too grow weary;
3-1:218
讓肉體削去其本性中過剩之物就夠了;
let it be enough for the flesh to cut away its natural superfluities;
3-1:219
let your bodily exercise be managed in accordance with your characters (habits), that you may learn to labor with the heart, and to suffer-with-it in soul.
3-1:220
Those who make the pallor of their face shine in asceticism, let them cast away the praise that comes from men even before it arrives—since the thought casts this in within, even before the encounter.
3-1:221
...of oil and of superfluities; then the thoughts reckon up for you the years with praises—that you may slacken in your labors—since they exercise you for the body's sake.
3-1:222
Fittingly, then, you will speak back to the evil-minded reckoners whatever things are set against them, for the overthrow of their crookedness.
3-1:223
A certain one of the brethren, being praised from within for his labors against the demons, was singing psalms.
3-1:224
‘Let them be turned back forthwith, being put to shame, who say to me:
3-1:225
「好啊!」』不要容忍那些把獨修生活的漫長年日帶到你面前之思念,免得它們把你的勞苦繫於年日,也不要在誇耀曠野之忍耐中被活擒;
Well done!’ Do not bear with the thought of those who carry to you a long cycle of years in the solitary life, lest they hang your labors upon the years, nor be taken alive in boasting over the endurance of the desert;
3-1:226
but in the endurance of meanness remember to be an unprofitable servant.
3-1:227
On account of deep old age, someone was forcing a certain steadfast solitary elder to be removed from the desert.
3-1:228
‘Cease your force,’ he said, ‘for I have not yet been recalled, as an evildoer, from exile.’
3-1:229
And when I sought to learn from him the meaning of this teaching, he said:
3-1:230
‘Seek first, with labor, the implanted fear, and then you will find within the experienced word—the word that teaches a man knowledge.’
3-1:231
And the same man, being asked also about fear, answered thus:
3-1:232
‘He who has the remembrance of death as a care is led also to the fear of the judgment.’
3-1:233
你當天天與那敬畏神聖之經文為伴侶;
With the fear of the divine Scriptures be a daily companion;
3-1:234
for by companionship with these you will cast out the conversations of the thoughts.
3-1:235
He who treasures up the divine Scriptures in his heart by meditation easily casts out the thoughts from it.
3-1:236
Hearkening to the divine things in night-time reading during the vigils, let us not deaden our hearing with sleep, nor betray the soul to the captivity of the thoughts, but with the goad of the Scriptures let us prick the heart to compunction, that by the compunction of diligence we may cut in two the opposing negligence.
3-1:237
有些人為著名聲、而非為靈魂的緣故,與虔誠者結交,為要不勞而為自己謀得一種裝飾;
Some, for the sake of reputation and not care for the soul, become friendly with the devout, that they may procure for themselves an adornment without labor;
3-1:238
but he who, for the sake of the remembrance of heavenly things, is set ablaze for love, is purged in his reflection of the complacency in earthly things.
3-1:239
Do not dismiss the conscience that bears witness against you by a thought that despises and sweet-talks the fault; do not strain together with the contentious thought, lest, having warred passion with passion, you be vanquished by virtue; do not be lifted up together with the proud thought that puffs back against a counter-wind.
3-1:240
在那油滑流轉的舌頭上沒有讚美,但在那穩重而動的嘴唇上卻有榮耀;
There is no praise in a tongue that runs glibly, but there is glory in lips that move steadfastly;
3-1:241
你聽見話語時,要詢問你的心思,然後既已分辨,便給出你的判語;
when listening to words, question your mind, and then, having discerned, you will give your verdict;
3-1:242
do not defraud your mind by ill-considered words, lest your Canaanite tongue be cast down a precipice.
3-1:243
Let not a spirit of much-speaking lead you astray, for in it lurks the deceitful lie.
3-1:244
He who is bitten by the revilings that come from others, and does not cast these upon the devil,
3-1:245
rouses up against himself the populace of his own thoughts, and provokes them still more to prepare darts against himself, in that the soul, being wounded through such things, collapses.
3-1:246
If you go to a foreign land for the sake of service, do not make ready to be received hospitably by all, reckoning yourself unworthy of the honor, that you may thus put to flight the thought of reviling, even if it tells the truth.
3-1:247
I reckon that, where there is no love, being reviled in the greatest degree, or wronged, you will not bear a grudge, but will bless.
3-1:248
因為那向鬼魔懷恨的人,便不向人懷恨;
For he who bears a grudge against the demons does not bear a grudge against men;
3-1:249
but he who bears a grudge against his brother is at peace with the demons.
3-1:250
頂撞之怒是心的焚燒,但那些不懷恨之人的靈魂卻得屬靈的甘露滋潤;
A burning of the heart is the wrath of contradiction, but the souls of those who bear no grudge are bedewed spiritually;
3-1:251
正如火炭噴出火星,照樣,懷恨的靈魂也噴出惡念;
as coals of fire belch forth sparks, so also do grudge-bearing souls belch forth evil thoughts;
3-1:252
just as the sting of a scorpion has a most acrid pain, so also a grudge-bearing soul has a most bitter poison.
3-1:253
你當向淫亂之靈與虛榮之靈懷恨——這兩個苦毒的鬼彼此相對;
Bear a grudge against the spirits of fornication and of vainglory—two bitter demons opposed to one another;
3-1:254
for the one flees faces, but the other rejoices in faces.
3-1:255
the demon of licentiousness, suddenly hurling filthiness at the contestant of asceticism, leaps upon him sharply, not bearing the heat of the fiery torch-bearing of labors; but upon the one who has been slackened by the flattery of pleasures, the demon of self-control little by little mounts up to converse with the heart, so that, being kindled with evils, it may dispute and be led captive, and bring the hatred of sin to its end.
3-1:256
But the deceiver of vainglory, being a crowd-pleaser, stands by the soul of the self-willed laborers in a shadowed manner, hunting in them the glory that comes through the labors by which they work.
3-1:257
If, then, anyone wishes, with God, to get the better of these, let him make the flesh lean against fornication, and humble the soul against vainglory.
3-1:258
For thus we shall easily thrust out the vain glory of the one, and please God, and blow away the unclean fantasies of the other, and make the heart pure of pleasures.
3-1:259
It is a most difficult thing for the heart to be buried together with the habit of pleasures, and there is need of many toils to cut off to the uttermost the pasturage of evils.
3-1:260
因此,不要使思念習於與眾快樂交談;
Do not, then, accustom the thought to converse with the pleasures;
3-1:261
for in an assembly of evils a fire is kindled. For thus, heating you up, they make you reason that it is a labor to master the conflagration of nature, and that the life of self-control is a long one; and they bring up for you also remembrances of the shameful things which by night they fantasize for you, fashioning for you fiery idols of error; then, having more vehemently kindled the fever in the flesh by the law of sin, they give you counsel within, that you are not strong enough to hold back the violence of nature—that even if you sin today out of necessity, yet tomorrow you will repent because of the commandment.
3-1:262
‘For the law is loving toward mankind, and pardons sin to those who repent.’
3-1:263
And they bring forward certain of those who stumbled in the midst of self-control, and again repented,
3-1:264
為要藉這些人使它們自己詭詐的勸言顯為可信;
in order that from these they may make plausible the counsel of their own deceit;
3-1:265
so that, having recalled the soul by repentance the wrong way round, they may make the temple of chastity into a brothel.
3-1:266
Thus do the double-tongued serpents hiss at the thought in the busy workshop of the heart.
3-1:267
But you, O man of self-control, do not be lured again under the pretext of repentance by uncertain hopes, for many who fell were snatched away at once, while others were not strong enough to rise, being bound by the habit of pleasures as under a law.
3-1:268
啊,人哪,你怎麼知道你是否會活著,以致你還能悔改——你竟為自己劃定壽數?而你在此跌倒,是給你的肉體賣了人情,其實你倒應當給自己賣個人情,就是死亡的記念,好叫那審判可畏的判決得以畫在你心上——但願你或能藉此撲滅肉體那發燒的心態;
For what do you know, O man, whether you will live, so that you may also repent—that you should mark out for yourself spans of life? And here, by stumbling, you do a favor to your flesh, when you ought rather to do yourself the favor of the remembrance of death, and so that there may be painted on your heart the fearful sentence of the Judgment—if somehow you might be able to quench the feverish mind-set of the flesh;
3-1:269
for you will not otherwise quench the passions, before you mix into your flesh the labors of their dismantling.
3-1:270
Nor indeed the passions of the soul, before you rain down upon the heart the fruits of love.
3-1:271
The bodily passions take their origin from the natural things of the flesh, against which is self-control; but the passions of the soul have their conception from the things of the soul, against which is love.
3-1:272
Love is the conjunction of dispassion, and the wiping-out of the passions—putting forward long-suffering, and cooling the seething rage; setting forth humility, and bringing down pride.
3-1:273
愛除了神以外,沒有甚麼是屬自己的;
Love has nothing of its own except God;
3-1:274
Let him who is newly grafted into the radiant senate of the monks thrust away the thoughts that come to him of praise from his kindred, that he may seek not the praise that comes from men, but the blessedness that comes from the commandments.
3-1:275
讓他鼓起勇氣,對抗那些投入怯懦的鬼魔;
Let him take courage against the demons who throw in cowardices;
3-1:276
因為你們所受的,不是那叫你們再陷入懼怕、奴僕的怯懦之靈;
for you have not received a spirit of cowardice (fear) again unto fear;
3-1:277
let him not cower before a spirit of cowardice, nor tremble at the nightly knockings of the demons, since they have authority not even over swine.
3-1:278
他在哪個地方害怕,就讓他在那裡禱告,因為它們不能撲倒你,即使它們如此驚嚇你;
In whatever place he is afraid, let him pray, for they will not fall upon you, even if they thus startle you;
3-1:279
but when you rise up, take courage in your heart, comfort yourself with psalmody, saying: ‘You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, of the arrow that flies by day, of the thing that walks about in darkness, of the mishap and the noonday demon.’ For thus, having done so once and many times over, you will more swiftly drive the demon of cowardice away from yourself.
3-1:280
For being unable to harm by deed, they cow the soul with fantasies, that men may suppose the weak and powerless to be strong and powerful.
3-1:281
不要給自己穿上最華美的衣裳,免得你更顯眼地披戴那虛榮之鬼;
Do not array yourself in the finest garments, lest you put on the demon of vainglory more conspicuously;
3-1:282
因為諸德不是穿戴在衣裳的美麗上,乃是那勞苦在靈魂的美麗中被披以黃金;
for the virtues are not worn in the beauty of garments, but the labors are arrayed in gold in the beauty of the soul;
3-1:283
but clothe yourself over with the fear of God, of the chastisements of the Judgment, so that by the fear of fire you may put on an unquenchable heat, and be made wise against the evil craft of the thoughts more swiftly—for the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
3-1:284
那藉經歷宣告思念之詭詐的人,除了那些有經歷的人以外,不會被眾人熟知,因為在這一方面,經歷乃是那認知之道路;
He who declares the deceit of the thoughts through experience will not be well known to all except to those in experience, for experience is the road of the gnostic (knowledge) in this part;
3-1:285
for the cause of both is the practical (way of life), which, holding more laboriously, we shall come to know ourselves, and to condemn the thoughts, and to know God.
3-1:286
那從那實行的出離、與那認知的內住而出,以辨析思念的技藝膏抹(教導)那些單純之人的,當謹慎,免得他為著炫耀榮耀而誇口於那認知;
Let him who, out of the practical departure and the gnostic indwelling, anoints the simple by the art of the thoughts, take heed that he not boast of the gnostic for a display of glory;
3-1:287
but if a thought, magnifying these things, plunders him, let him take to his aid the Hellene (gentile) Jethro, who out of grace gave wise counsel to Moses the great prophet for judgment.
3-1:288
願你思念的能力就是那些工作,因為當行之事比當說之事更具智慧,正如它們也更費勞苦;
Let the power of your thoughts be the works, for the things to be done are more philosophical than the things to be said, just as they are also more laborious;
3-1:289
when action is present, the words flash forth as lightning; but when works are not present, the words do not flash forth the power of works.
3-1:290
A reproach to gray hairs is youthful speech, and lips puffed up, shaken with laughter; but he who is troubled and troubles others without cause will be outside of calm, and, when there is no storm, is tossed by tempest.
3-1:291
Do not hunt for words from an untimely tongue, lest you yourself endure the same thing from those whom you do not wish.
3-1:292
你當逃避去絆住鄰舍的舌頭,好叫你自己也躲開魔鬼的絆腳;
Flee from tripping up your neighbor's tongue, that you too may escape the tripping-up of the devil;
3-1:293
flee from reproaching your brother's fault, lest, as an alien, you fall out of compassion.
3-1:294
He who does not have kindness and love toward his brother, how could he be a member of the Christ-bearing love? Whenever a brother comes alongside your strenuous fast, do not accept the displeasure of the thoughts that suggest to you disturbance to your stillness and a hindrance to your fast; they do this so that, seeing your brother, you may not see him as God.
3-1:295
我們不要說弟兄們連連的到訪是攪擾,倒要說這顯為一種同盟;
Let us not say that the continual visitations of the brethren are disturbances, but rather that they prove to be an alliance;
3-1:296
let us entrust their choral standing to the battle against the phalanx of the adversary.
3-1:297
For thus, united by the love-charm of love, we shall thrust out wickedness, and shall transfer the works of our hands into the treasury of hospitality.
3-1:298
Let us not receive the brethren as though we were doing them a favor, but, as being debtors of the loan, let us entertain them as strangers with supplication, just as Lot showed.
3-1:299
有些人因著一種異常(崇高)的身分,便異常地自高自大,每當他們邀請客旅時,竟絲毫不懇切相邀,反倒以傲慢誇張那邀請的措辭,又責怪那推辭的人,彷彿他犯了侮辱之罪;
Some, on account of a strange (high) rank, are also strangely puffed up, and whenever they invite a stranger, they do not entreat him at all, but even broaden out with arrogance the very wording of the invitation, while they blame the one who declines as though he had committed an insult;
3-1:300
on account of this, great conceit is kindled up from there.
3-1:301
For the thoughts blind the eye of the soul by pricking it, so that we may make the worst use of the most excellent of the commandments.
3-1:302
當有念頭攔阻你,叫你不要在餐桌上過分勉強弟兄用餐時,那時牠就藉這念頭嘲弄你,使你的舌頭不肯被愛的勉力所約束;
When a thought hinders you from urging your brother too strongly at the table, then through it the demon mocks you, that you may not have a tongue constrained to the constraint of love;
3-1:303
因為牠或許向你暗示,這弟兄不過是個四處遊蕩的人,叫他來只配以餅果腹;同時又向那弟兄心裡灌輸,說他在你這裡全然得不著款待;
for to you perhaps it suggests that the brother is one of the wanderers, and that he should come and be content with bread; while into him it casts the notion that he found no hospitality at all with you;
3-1:304
for keeping its eye on the change of his conduct, it casts one against the other in their hearts, that in the one it may cut off hospitality, and in the other make abuse sprout up.
3-1:305
亞伯拉罕坐在帳棚前,凡看見有人經過,便以實際行動接待他們;
Abraham, sitting before his tent, if anywhere he saw any of those passing by, received them with deeds;
3-1:306
to those living in impiety he spread out his table, and receiving even barbarians, he did not fail to entertain angels.
3-1:307
All who, having gone abroad as strangers, have been entertained under it, know the sweetness of hospitality, when a kindly word too seasons the table sweetly for the heart.
3-1:308
Let us therefore with much zeal practice hospitality kindly, that we may receive not only angels but also God.
3-1:309
For "Inasmuch," He says, "as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me." One of those who pursue virtue with deeper knowledge answered thus:
3-1:310
款待的熱忱與甘心樂意所獻上的豐厚服事,往往能驅散群魔在心中迴響的幻象,只要人在某種程度上脫離了物質的牽絆;
The zeal of hospitality, and abundant service eagerly rendered, is wont to make vanish the fantasies of the demons that echo in the heart, provided that one is in some way freed from material things;
3-1:311
and these things, done with humility and contrition of heart, more quickly deliver the labourer from the fantasies.
3-1:312
For the demons exceedingly dread humility, knowing it to be a commandment of the Master.
3-1:313
One of the most approved, moving discourse concerning humility, disclosed this also: that a Father, he says, one of the very approved, being struck on the cheek by a demon-possessed man who raged terribly, at once turning offered the other also ready; but the demon, as if struck back by the lightning of humility, and crying out, suddenly leapt away from its prey.
3-1:314
This saying also is of Saint Epiphanius the bishop.
3-1:315
It came to pass, he says, that the son of a faithful widow had a spirit of Python, and the affliction lingering long, did not yield to treatment.
3-1:316
但當他母親因哀痛而謙卑下來時,感恩便止息了那痛苦;那感恩彷彿把她的靈魂掛在十字架上,藉著她的禱告把鬼從孩子身上拔了出來;
But when his mother was humbled with mourning, thanksgiving cooled the suffering, which, hanging her soul as it were from the cross, by her prayers tore the demon away from the child;
3-1:317
因為當那少年在周圍各處遊蕩、母親在家中禱告時,那鬼竟喊著她的名字,被痛苦所逼迫;
for while the young man wandered about in the surrounding regions and the mother prayed at home, the demon, crying out her name, was driven by torments;
3-1:318
but she, hearing this very thing, did not rush to the matter, binding the conflict of nature with humility; though dragged by others against her will she was led away, and the demon raged the more at using flight.
3-1:319
So she, having come upon him and embraced the child with tears, set thanksgiving and humility against the demon; and when she had wept bitterly, and entreated Christ, and made the sign of the cross, before many scourgings the demon fled from the child more swiftly.
3-1:320
群魔嫉妒那些在順服教父中發光的人,向他們咬牙切齒,因為這些人在順服中無慮地連於捨棄世界之德;牠們便仔細搜尋藉口,向這些人預備激怒,趁所生的怒氣鏤刻怨恨,然後一點一點地煮沸對教父的憎恨,彷彿教父責備得不公、又看人的情面;
The demons envy those who shine in submission to a Father, and gnash their teeth against them, because in submission they have yoked together renunciation free from care; and against these, scrutinizing pretexts, they prepare provocations, and with the anger that arises they engrave rancour, then little by little they boil up hatred toward the Father, as though he reproved unjustly and showed partiality;
3-1:321
so that, having shaken the soul by various means, they may scatter it from the embrace of the Father.
3-1:322
Let him therefore who is in submission to a Father be overcome by insults, and conquer by humility, and be ordered by long-suffering, and not, when the thoughts murmur within, give way to harshness and to brashness toward the brethren.
3-1:323
因為自由與卑劣的奴役並不相等,所以牠們特別、甚至更進一步地逼進,好叫那受管之人變得剛愎自用,便輕易把他穿刺在物質的事上;
And because liberty is no equal counterweight to a wretched servitude, they press in especially, and yet further than these things, so that, having made the subordinate self-willed, they may easily impale him upon material things;
3-1:324
for some they are zealous to separate from spiritual fatherhood by these means, and others by other means.
3-1:325
牠們在裡頭低聲鼓動說:「作工、置產、款待人吧,好為自己博得美名」;
"Work, and acquire, and show hospitality," they chant within, "so that you may win yourself a good name";
3-1:326
因為牠們從那些看似美好的事上,一點一點撒下惡的稗子,起初任憑他因虛榮而沾沾自喜,又因不住的禁食而警醒,在禱告和聚會中熱切地起來,好叫他這樣盤算:「我從前作受管的人時,何曾這樣過」;
for from things seemingly good they sow piece by piece the tares of wickedness, and at the outset they let him be sweetened by vainglory, and be sober with continual fasting, and rise eagerly in prayers and in the assemblies, so that he may reckon: "Being a subordinate, I was never such as this";
3-1:327
"for there were insults, and griefs, and disturbances, but here is peace, and calm, and joy; there the Father's harshness, and fear, and rebuke, but here freedom from care, from fear, and from reproof."
3-1:328
牠們就這樣在這類事上竊取他的心思,把它擄走;
And thus, having stolen his mind in such things, they snatch it away;
3-1:329
and suddenly coming upon him in a sleep beyond bounds, they sprinkle his soul with fear, and cut off the assemblies by negligence and listlessness, and put it into his mind that hospitality is a nuisance, and bring on all the snares of evil, that, having cast listlessness upon him, they may also work in him hatred toward the life itself, and thus, having set him stripped of the virtues, may expose him before the angels.
3-1:330
Sometimes the demons magnify the labours through the thoughts, and sometimes they belittle them as accomplishing nothing, so that in the one case they may instil presumption, and in the other sow despair.
3-1:331
For to those who are not bent, in order to slacken them, they magnify the labours, that they may instil presumption; but to those who refuse to be bent by presumption, they offer nothing more than to chant that the labours accomplish nothing, so that, having slackened them, they may sow despair.
3-1:332
所以每當念頭誇大那勞苦時,我們當把它吐棄,看輕自己的靈魂;但每當它又把勞苦看小、說毫無成效時,我們就當竭盡所能,誇大基督的憐憫;
Whenever, therefore, the thoughts magnify the labours, let us spit them out and belittle the soul; but whenever again they make the labours small as accomplishing nothing, let us, as far as we are able, magnify the mercies of Christ;
3-1:333
for the more you discipline your body harshly, the more you search out your conscience.
3-1:334
Know yourself, perceiving the secret plunderings of the thoughts, lest, being carried along unawares, we be darkened concerning their hidden robberies, and so reap the virtues by hardship alone.
3-1:335
For thus some, having been deluded with fantasies, were shaken out of their wits like locusts, the demons producing fantasies, and disordering their sight, and at times also plundering the soul with cowardice.
3-1:336
有一位弟兄夜間守夜,群魔便為他造出可怕的幻象,不僅向外面的眼睛,也向裡面的心眼,以致他因憂慮次夜將臨而心思苦惱,幾乎要被奪去理智;那爭戰連著許多夜晚向他靈魂猛撲,他在危難中竭力要在裡面持守理智的主宰,把靈魂掛靠在那賜禱告者身上,又把自己過犯的所為攤在自己面前,努力察看自己;
To one of the brethren, keeping vigil by night, the demons fashioned terrifying fantasies, not only to the outward eye but also to the inward sight, so that, with anxiety for the coming night, his mind in distress was in danger of the plundering of his wits; and for many nights the war flew at the soul, while he, in peril, struggled to hold fast within the ruling faculty of the mind, hanging his soul upon the Giver of prayer, and bringing forth the deeds of his faults against himself, he strove to look upon himself;
3-1:337
then also, drawing his soul to the fire of judgment, he frightened it, so that, dashing fear against fear, he might beat off cowardice—as indeed it came to pass, as he who endured the war declared.
3-1:338
因為當群魔以各樣方法恐嚇他的靈魂時,那勞苦的人就在禱告中尋求神;當牠們以幻象攪擾他的靈魂時,他便細數自己過犯的重擔,呈在那無所不見的神面前;
For while the demons frightened his soul in manifold ways, the labourer sought after God in prayer; and while they distracted his soul with fantasies, he, recounting the burden of his faults, displayed it to the all-seeing God;
3-1:339
牠們又一再要把禱告的眼目拉下,他卻以審判的懼怕來替換,使那幻象的懼怕消散;
and again, while they were dragging down the eye of prayer, he, exchanging it for the fear of judgment, made the fear of the fantasies vanish;
3-1:340
因為這懼怕的一面勝過了另一面,靠著神便勝過了那迷惑;
for the one part of the fear, prevailing over the other, with God's help got the better of the delusion;
3-1:341
因為靈魂藉著記念自己的罪而謙卑下來,又被審判的懼怕喚醒,便把群魔的恐嚇從裡面吹散出去;
for the soul, humbled by the remembrance of its sins and awakened by the fear of judgment, blew the terrors of the demons out from within;
3-1:342
to drive away the terrors, and to uphold the soul that was falling.
3-1:343
For "the Lord upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down." CHAPTER.
3-1:344
There are times when we strive to make our prayer pure, and perhaps are not able.
3-1:345
And there are times again when, though we do not strive, the soul comes to be in pure prayer; the former belonging to our weakness, the latter to the grace from above that calls us back to return to the purity of the soul, and at the same time, through both, teaching us not to attribute it to ourselves in praying, but to acknowledge the One who gives the gift.
3-1:346
For "we do not know what we should pray for as we ought."
3-1:347
Whenever, therefore, we strive to purify our prayer, and are not able, but are darkened, then, drenching our cheeks with tears, let us entreat God that the night of the war may be dissolved, and the radiance of the soul be illumined.
3-1:348
當那與你同住的弟兄為著某項服事出外時,你要照禱告的常例,重新記念他;
When the brother who lives with you departs for the sake of some service, according to the custom of prayers renew his remembrance;
3-1:349
but beyond measure do not fancy him, lest the demons, taking from you the beginning of care, and whetting it, sharpen it the more, casting his image as a shadow over you in the chanting of the psalms, and making you fall short in God of the care that is according to God, so that, having beaten care against care, they may lead us away captive from the better things, into not reckoning the word, "Cast your care upon the Lord." For they know that, out of the excessive anxiety over the brother, they also fashion griefs, disturbing the ruling faculty.
3-1:350
Moreover they also kindle reproaches of slowness, as though the brother had been negligent about the zeal of his service, so that the over-anxious longing may perhaps even turn into hatred.
3-1:351
And it is the custom of the demons in the cares about one who is away to do this also: on the day they see him arriving, to mirror him to you in a dream, so that, as from the dream that came true, they may make us in the season of those away again welcome the prophets of dreams—whom rather we ought to turn away from and exceedingly shun—lest from these they lead the soul astray into yet other things as well.
3-1:352
因為這些鬼並不能預知甚麼,牠們不過是把所看見正在發生的事,藉幻象表明出來、虛構出來;
For these foreknow nothing, but what they see happening, these things they signify and represent in fantasies;
3-1:353
因為我們在靜默中時,牠們屢屢看見有弟兄正向我們走來,便藉念頭預先示意——這些事我們斷不可信,縱使牠們自以為說的是實情;
for often, indeed, while we are in stillness, having beheld a brother coming to us, they have signified it beforehand through the thoughts—things we must not believe, even though they suppose they are speaking the truth;
3-1:354
for through what seems to be the truth they smuggle in falsehood, that piece by piece they may trace out snares along the paths ahead.
3-1:355
正如未經煉製的金子投進熔爐便更純淨,照樣,新進的修士在團體院(coenobium)中將品性重新熔煉,便因堅忍而被恢復得光潔;
Just as raw gold, cast into a furnace, becomes purer, so also a newcomer monk, having his character re-smelted in a coenobium, is restored bright through endurance;
3-1:356
因為他藉著弟兄們的吩咐,得以學習順服;
for through the command of the brethren he is brought to learn obedience;
3-1:357
and through the one who rebukes him, his nature is made ready to have long-suffering.
3-1:358
Whenever, therefore, he receives insults with joy, and embraces humility with lowliness, having become superior to the passions that confront him, he contends to shine forth beyond them in the virtues, grace bestowing on him ever greater power.
3-1:359
Just as those who go down into the veins of the earth dig up gold, so those who descend into humility, the gold-bearing ore, bring up virtues.
3-1:360
Then the mind perceives rest, when, having cut off the causes of the passions, it is occupied with contemplation; but before the cutting off of these, it perceives toil and hardship, approaching feebly the battle with the adversaries.
3-1:361
眾長老極其讚許那循序漸進而來的隱修獨居(withdrawal),只要那人是在團體院中成全了眾德之後,才進到這一步的;
The elders highly approve withdrawal that comes by degrees, if indeed one who has completed the virtues in a coenobium has advanced to this;
3-1:362
let him test himself, to make progress in withdrawal.
3-1:363
But if, being unable, he is diminished in virtue, let him return to the coenobium, lest, being unable to meet the devices of the thoughts, he fall out of his wits.
3-1:364
Just as sons are a comfort to a mourning widow, so labours are a consolation to a soul that has fallen, which scatter the despair of the thoughts, and sow the faith of repentance, and proclaim the mercies of Christ, and renounce the sins that have been committed.
3-1:365
所以我們行勞苦,不可僅僅出於習慣,乃要存著感恩的悟性,免得靈魂被發現赤露脫盡這樣的(屬靈)智慧;
We ought not, therefore, to perform our labours merely out of habit, but also with the understanding of thanksgiving, lest the soul be found stripped of such philosophy;
3-1:366
for if at each deed we are conscious of the One who grants the ends of the labours, let us seal it with thanksgiving. Just as a puppy lies in wait to snatch bread from a babe, so an evil thought lies in wait to snatch understanding from the heart.
3-1:367
Let us not, then, act childishly, using the wickedness of contrary works, lest we surrender our soul to these beforehand for plundering.
3-1:368
Just as the dance of the stars, bearing torches, brightens the heaven, so the truth of words, bearing lamps, brightens the man.
3-1:369
Let us therefore bear upon our tongue one manner of truth, because "the Lord makes the single-minded to dwell in a house."
3-1:370
Just as fierce lightnings leaping forth foretell thunder, so also precise sayings drawing near presage faith.
3-1:371
Let us therefore be zealous to be faithful to the truth, that we may also advance to love, the mother-city of the virtues.
3-1:372
正如太陽以金光燦爛的光線向全地微笑,照樣,愛以光輝的行為向每一個靈魂歡喜;
As the sun with its golden-gleaming rays smiles upon all the earth, so love with its light-bearing deeds rejoices over every soul;
3-1:373
and if we hold fast to it, we have quenched the passions, and have shone forth into the heavens.
3-1:374
You will undertake every labour until you attain holy love, because, when it is absent, of the present things there is no benefit.
3-1:375
For anger grows fierce, and characters become harsh, and labours, growing presumptuous, are mingled with vainglory.
3-1:376
For the humbling of the soul David fasted with mourning, and let us also humble the soul through fasting.
3-1:377
凡在身體的勞苦上操練得更嚴格的人,既不可為著稱讚而作工,也不可因虛榮而高抬自己;
Let him who is trained more rigorously in bodily labours neither work for praise nor be exalted by glory;
3-1:378
for if in these things the demons make the soul lift its brow,
3-1:379
並以虛榮加強身體的刻苦與苦行,誘引他去抓取更大的勞苦,好叫他越發被高抬;
and reinforce the harshness and the asceticism of the body with vainglory, and draw him on to lay hold of greater labours, so that he may also be the more exalted;
3-1:380
for they confer within through the thoughts, casting in these things: that "Just as so-and-so, having practised asceticism most rigorously, was named greatly, and even dead is still spoken of, so do you too ascend to the highest peak of asceticism, that you may win glory for yourself, and your name may go out great, so as to be spoken of surpassingly even after death."
3-1:381
Indeed, through those thus deceived, they not only war against your bodily labours, but rather call them into alliance, because through them they touch the soul in graver matters; for they enthrone him, and exalt him to the office of teaching, that thereby he may be lauded as holding the first rank among the great labourers and the men of knowledge.
3-1:382
And they cast in envy and jealousy toward those who are lauded for their achievements, and whose practice is the more admirable, and to whom knowledge is near at hand.
3-1:383
And there are times when they even lull to sleep the burning of his flesh, craftily banishing the unclean thoughts from within, so that it may be supposed that the spirit of fornication has been conquered in his portion, and that, according to the brightness of the saints, he has purified his heart, and has ascended to the very dome of holiness.
3-1:384
至於他所吃的食物、所戒絕的食物,以及一連串的禁食,牠們便為他計算那些時段,叫他在其中像得勝的勇士般誇口,又輕看弟兄之眾、以他們為卑賤而自高;
And concerning the foods he ate, and from which he abstained, and the continuous fasts, they reckon up for him the periods in which he ought, like a champion, to boast, and to exalt himself over the brotherhood as worthless;
3-1:385
"I have suffered hardship,"—silencing him still from saying this: "Yet not I, but the help that is in me."
3-1:386
For they do not allow him to confess God as helper in the things wherein they make him boast greatly, so that, having accomplished the whole of the contests as it were by his own strength, he may demand the praises of the struggles wholly for himself, and so be plunged into the abyss of blasphemy, presenting himself, without perceiving it, as his own helper.
3-1:387
Thus, then, when the heart is echoed by the glory of the thoughts and does not resist, it will not be outside the hidden derangement of the wits, the ruling faculty of the mind being in danger of being shaken out—whether through dreams that gain credence, or in transformations during wakefulness, or in appearances under the changed form of light.
3-1:388
For Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light for our deception, perhaps pretending that he will give charisms, that, falling down, you may worship him; or proclaiming as good news that you will be taken up like another Elijah; or promising to sanctify you—the faith of which some, having received it, have missed the mark concerning the truth, and have become deranged in mind.
3-1:389
You therefore, O suppliant of the Holy Trinity, knowing these things in which you labour diligently, guard your heart with all watchfulness, lest, attending only to the outward labours, you be craftily ensnared in the inward.
3-1:390
孩子啊,我這些話是對你說的;願你的心謹守我的言語;
These my words, O child, have been spoken to you; let your heart keep my sayings;
3-1:391
remember Christ who guards you, and do not forget the adorable and consubstantial Trinity, to whom be glory unto the ages.
