Again my Jesus, and again a mystery—a mystery not deceptive, nor unseemly, nor of Greek error and intoxication (for thus do I call their solemnities, and so, I think, does every right-minded person), but a mystery lofty and divine, and an usher to the splendour above.
2-1:2
因為我們所臨到、今日蒙恩得以慶祝的這神聖的「諸光之日」,其開端乃在我基督的受洗——祂是那真光,是照亮每一個生在世上之人的;
For the holy Day of Lights, to which we have come, and which we have been deemed worthy to celebrate today, takes its beginning from the Baptism of my Christ, the true Light that lightens every man coming into the world;
2-1:3
and it works my cleansing, and aids the light which we received from Him from above at the beginning, but which we had darkened and confounded through sin.
2-1:4
所以你們要聽那神聖的聲音,它在我這作這等事之入門者與引導者的耳中響得極其有力,也願它在你們耳中響起;
Therefore hear a divine voice, sounding most strongly in my ears—I who am the initiate and the initiator into such things—and may it sound in yours also;
2-1:5
'I am the light of the world.'
2-1:6
And therefore: 'Draw near to Him, and be enlightened, and your faces shall not be ashamed,' being marked with the true Light.
2-1:7
It is a season of regeneration: let us be born from above.
2-1:8
Let us take up again the first Adam.
2-1:9
Let us not remain what we are, but let us become what we once were.
2-1:10
The Light shines in the darkness, in this life and this flesh, and is pursued by the darkness, yet is not overcome by it—I mean by the adversary power, which leaps shamelessly upon the visible Adam, but encounters God and is defeated; that we, putting off the darkness, may draw near to the Light, and then ourselves become perfect Light, offspring of perfect Light.
2-1:11
Do you see the grace of the day? Do you see the power of the mystery? Were you not raised from the earth? Were you not clearly set on high, exalted by our voice and uplifting? And you shall be set yet higher, when the Word prospers the discourse.
2-1:12
Is there any such purification as the legal and shadowy one, profiting by temporary sprinklings, and sprinkling the defiled with the ashes of a heifer? Is there any such thing in the mysteries of the Greeks—all whose rites and mysteries are to me but trifling, a dark invention of demons, a fabrication of an ill-fated mind, helped along by time and stolen away by myth?
2-1:13
因為他們所當作真實去敬拜的,卻又當作神話去遮掩;
For what they worship as true, they veil over as mythical;
2-1:14
其實,這些事若是真的,就不該稱為神話,只該證明它們並不可恥;
though, if true, they ought not to be called myths, but only to be shown not to be shameful;
2-1:15
若是假的,就不該被驚奇看待,也不該如此輕率地對同一件事持守那最為矛盾的看法;
and if false, ought not to be marvelled at, nor thus rashly to hold the most contradictory opinions about the same matter;
2-1:16
好像在跟市場上嬉戲的孩童、或跟那實在不幸的人說話,而不是跟那有悟性、敬拜「道」的人說話;
as if conversing with children playing in the market-place, or with men truly ill-fated, and not with men of understanding and worshippers of the Word;
2-1:17
even though they spit out this artful and squalid plausibility.
2-1:18
這裡也沒有庫瑞忒斯的喧鬧、拍擊與持械之舞,用以掩蓋一位啼哭之神的哭聲,好叫他躲過那恨惡兒女的父;
Nor are there the clangings of the Curetes, and the clappings and armed dances, drowning out the cry of a weeping god, that he might escape a child-hating father;
2-1:19
for it was a strange thing that one who had been swallowed like a stone should wail like an infant.
2-1:20
這裡也沒有弗呂家人的自閹、笛聲、科律班忒斯,以及人們圍繞瑞亞所狂行的一切,他們為「眾神之母」舉行祭典,自己又獻身受戒於凡配得這等神祇之母的種種邪事;
Nor the mutilations of the Phrygians, and flutes, and Corybantes, and all that men do in their frenzy concerning Rhea, performing rites for the Mother of the gods, and being themselves consecrated to whatever is fitting for the mother of such beings;
2-1:21
for I am ashamed to give to the day the rite of the night, and to make indecency a mystery.
2-1:22
Eleusis knows these things, and the beholders of what is kept silent—and rightly worthy of silence.
2-1:23
還有這些事:那大腿——產痛中未足月的胎兒,正如先前還有一個從頭生出來的;
These things, too: the thigh, an incomplete fruit of birth-pangs, just as before a head was;
2-1:24
and a hermaphrodite god, and a band of drunkards, and a dissolute host, and the folly of the Thebans honouring this one, and the thunderbolt of Semele being worshipped.
2-1:25
Nor are there the harlot mysteries of Aphrodite, who, as they themselves say, was both shamefully born and shamefully honoured.
2-1:26
這裡也沒有甚麼陽具像與淫穢偶像,無論其形狀或其行徑都是可恥的;
Nor any Phalli and Ithyphalli, shameful both in their forms and in their practices;
2-1:27
nor the slaughterings of strangers by the Taurians, and the altar-blood of the Spartan youths, mangled with scourges, in this alone wrongly playing the man, those by whom a goddess is honoured—and that a virgin!
2-1:28
For the same men both honoured effeminacy and revered insolence.
2-1:29
這裡也沒有術士的獻祭之術,和他們剖腹察腸的占卜;
Nor the sacrificing art of the Magi, and their divination by entrails;
2-1:30
也沒有迦勒底人的星象學與算命術,把我們的命運硬與天體的運行掛鈎——他們連自己是甚麼、將要如何,都尚且不能知道;
and the astronomy and genethlialogy of the Chaldeans, bringing our affairs into conformity with the movement of the heavenly bodies—they who cannot even know what they themselves are, or shall be;
2-1:31
這也不是色雷斯人的狂祭,據說連「敬拜」這詞都是從他們而來的;
nor are these the orgies of the Thracians, from whom, as the word goes, even the term for worship is derived;
2-1:32
也不是俄耳甫斯的祭典與奧祕,希臘人因他的智慧如此驚嘆他,甚至為他造了一張琴,說它的彈奏能牽動萬物;
nor the rites and mysteries of Orpheus, whom the Greeks so admired for wisdom that they even made him a lyre that drew all things by its strains;
2-1:33
nor the just chastisement of Mithras,
2-1:34
就是加在那些甘受這等入會禮之人身上的;
against those who endure being initiated into such things;
2-1:35
也不是俄西里斯的肢解之事——這是埃及人所尊崇的又一樁災難;
nor the tearings of Osiris, another calamity honoured among the Egyptians;
2-1:36
也不是伊西斯的種種不幸,並門德斯人那些被尊崇得過了分的山羊,以及阿庇斯的牛欄——那頭牛犢盡情享用著孟斐斯人的愚妄;
nor the misfortunes of Isis, and the goats of the Mendesians, more reverenced than they ought to be, and the stall of Apis, that calf which revels in the silliness of the Memphites;
2-1:37
nor all the ways in which they outrage the Nile with their honours—that giver of fruit, as they themselves hymn it, rich in grain, and measuring out prosperity by the cubit.
2-1:38
至於那加給爬蟲與走獸的尊榮,並在醜行上所逞的爭勝之心,我就不必說了;
For I forbear to speak of the honours paid to reptiles and beasts, and the ambition shown in indecency;
2-1:39
這每一樣都各有其私下的祭典與節期,而眾事所共有的,就是那纏累其上的不幸;
of each of which there is some private rite and festival, and common to all is the misery that attends them;
2-1:40
以致他們若終究非得這樣不虔不可、非得從神的榮耀中墮落、淪為敬拜偶像、人工製品與手所造之物,那麼凡稍有悟性的人,能向他們所禱告的咒詛,無非就是:但願他們去敬畏這等之物、如此尊崇它們,好叫他們(如保羅所說)在他們所敬拜的事物上,正好領受那當得的、迷誤的報應;
so that, if they had to be utterly impious, and to fall away from the glory of God, brought down to idols and works of art and things fashioned by hands, men of any understanding could pray nothing else against them than that they should reverence such things, and so honour them, that they might receive the recompense due to their error (as Paul says) in the very things they worship;
2-1:41
not so much honouring them, as being dishonoured by them.
2-1:42
Abominable in their error, yet more abominable in the worthlessness of the things they worship and revere, so that they are even more senseless than the very things they honour, surpassing in folly as much as those objects of worship surpass in worthlessness.
2-1:43
Let the children of the Greeks, then, sport with these things, and the demons, from whom comes their folly—those who divert God's honour to themselves, and tear men apart, this way and that, into shameful opinions and fancies; who, having cast us out from the tree of life by the tree of knowledge, partaken of out of season and unfittingly, overran us as now weaker, snatching away the ruling mind, and opening a door to the passions.
2-1:44
For being a nature envious and man-hating—or rather, having become such through their own wickedness—they could not bear that those below should attain the things above, while they themselves had fallen from on high to the earth; nor that so great a translation should take place of the glory and of the first natures.
2-1:45
這就是對受造之物的逼迫;
This is the persecution of the creature;
2-1:46
正為這緣故,神的形像被褻瀆了;
for this reason the image of God was outraged;
2-1:47
又因我們不肯謹守那誡命,就被交給了迷誤的無法無天;
and because we did not see fit to keep the commandment, we were delivered over to the lawlessness of error;
2-1:48
and because we went astray, we were dishonoured in the very things we revered.
2-1:49
因為可怕的不僅是這一件——我們原是為行善而造的,是為叫造我們者得榮耀、受稱讚,並為盡可能地效法神而造的,卻竟成了各樣情慾的發源地,這些情慾養得不善,又吞噬著裡面的人;
For not only is this terrible—that we who were made for good works, for the glory and praise of our Maker, and for the imitation of God, so far as is attainable, should become a starting-place for passions of every kind, ill-fed and consuming the inner man;
2-1:50
but that sinning is reckoned not only blameless but even divine, when the objects of worship take refuge in such a defence.
2-1:51
至於我們,正如蒙了恩典,得以逃離那迷信的謬誤,與真理聯合,事奉那永生真實的神,並超越受造界、越過一切受制於時間與原初運動之物;
But to us, just as it was granted, having fled the superstitious error, to be united with the truth, and to serve the living and true God, and to rise above creation, having passed beyond all that is subject to time and primal movement;
2-1:52
so let us also see and philosophize concerning God and divine things.
2-1:53
那麼,讓我們開始玄思,從那更宜起頭之處起頭;
Let us philosophize, then, beginning from where it is better to begin;
2-1:54
而那更宜之處,乃是所羅門為我們所定的律例所在;
and it is better to begin from where Solomon laid down the law for us;
2-1:55
他說:「智慧的開端,乃是取得智慧」;
'The beginning of wisdom,' he says, 'is to get wisdom';
2-1:56
and what does he mean by calling this the beginning of wisdom? The fear.
2-1:57
For we must not, having begun from contemplation,
2-1:58
卻以敬畏作收場(因為無羈的默觀,或許反會把人推下懸崖);
end in fear (for unbridled contemplation might perhaps even push one over a precipice);
2-1:59
but rather, being grounded in fear, and purified, and—if I may so speak—made fine, we must be raised to a height.
2-1:60
因為哪裡有敬畏,哪裡就有誡命的遵守;
For where there is fear, there is keeping of commandments;
2-1:61
哪裡有誡命的遵守,哪裡就有肉身的潔淨,得以除去那橫在魂前、不容它清明地看見那神聖之光的雲翳;
and where there is keeping of commandments, there is purification of the flesh—of that cloud which lies before the soul and does not permit it to behold the divine ray purely;
2-1:62
哪裡有潔淨,哪裡就有光照;
and where there is purification, there is illumination;
2-1:63
and illumination is the fulfilment of desire to those who long for the greatest things, or the Greatest of all, or what is beyond the Great.
2-1:64
免得我們落到以色列那樣的地步,不能承受摩西臉上的榮光,因而需要一層帕子;
lest we should suffer what Israel did, not enduring the glory of the face of Moses, and for this reason needing a veil;
2-1:65
or what Manoah did, both to suffer and to say:
2-1:66
「我們看見神了」——那時神乃是在異象中向他顯現;
'We have seen God,' when God had appeared to him in a vision;
2-1:67
or, like Peter, to send Jesus away from the boat, as not worthy of such a visitation.
2-1:68
And when I say Peter, whom do I mean? The one who walked upon the waves.
2-1:69
也免得我們像保羅那樣,在尚未從逼迫之罪中得潔淨之前,眼睛就受了擊打,因他與那被他逼迫者相遇——或更該說,與那大光的一道短暫閃耀相遇;
Or, like Paul, to be smitten in the eyes, before being cleansed of his persecutions, having conversed with the One he persecuted—or rather, with a brief flash of the great Light;
2-1:70
or, like the centurion, to seek the healing, yet not to receive the Healer into the house, out of a praiseworthy diffidence.
2-1:71
Let each of us also say, so long as he is not yet purified, but is still a centurion, commanding many in wickedness, and serving Caesar, the world-ruler of those dragged down below:
2-1:72
'I am not worthy that You should come under my roof.'
2-1:73
But when he beholds Jesus—though small in spiritual stature, like that Zacchaeus—and is lifted above the sycamore-tree, having mortified his members which are upon the earth, and risen above the body of his humiliation, then let him also receive the Word, and hear:
2-1:74
'Today is salvation come to this house,' and let him receive the salvation, and bear the more perfect fruit, scattering and pouring out rightly what he had wrongly gathered as a tax-collector.
2-1:75
因為同一位「道」,按其本性是叫不配的人畏懼的,又因祂愛人之故,是能被那些如此預備好的人所容納的;
For the same Word is both fearful to the unworthy because of His nature, and able to be contained, through His love for mankind, by those thus prepared;
2-1:76
這些人既把那不潔、屬物質的靈從自己魂裡趕了出去,又用認識真理把自己的魂打掃、裝飾過了,便不容它空閒無事,免得再被那七個邪惡的靈以更周密的部署擄去(這七靈之數正與美德的數目相對——因為越難爭戰的,越是被牠們竭力謀取的);
those who, having driven out the unclean and material spirit from their souls, and having swept and adorned their own souls with knowledge, did not leave them idle or unoccupied, so as to be taken again with greater preparation by the seven spirits of wickedness (as many as are reckoned of virtue—for the harder to fight against is the more eagerly sought after);
2-1:77
but, in addition to fleeing wickedness, they also work virtue, having settled the whole Christ, or as much as possible, within themselves, so that the wicked power, finding no empty place to occupy, may not fill it again with itself, and the last state become worse than the first, because of the greater fierceness of the assault, and the greater security and impregnability of the garrison.
2-1:78
then let us speak the hidden wisdom of God in a mystery, and shine forth to others.
2-1:79
我們既潔淨了自己,又在那「道」來臨時接待祂;
purifying ourselves, and receiving the Word at His coming;
2-1:80
and not only so, but also holding Him fast, and displaying Him to others.
2-1:81
And since we have purified the theatre by our discourse, come, let us now philosophize a little concerning the feast, and keep festival together with the souls that love feasts and love God.
2-1:82
And since the chief point of a feast is the remembrance of God, let us remember God.
2-1:83
For I consider that the sound of those keeping festival yonder, where is the dwelling of all who rejoice, is nothing else than this—God being hymned and glorified by those deemed worthy of the citizenship there.
2-1:84
And if the present discourse should contain something of what has already been said before, let no one wonder.
2-1:85
For I shall not only utter the same things, but utter them also concerning the same matters, trembling in tongue, and mind, and understanding, whenever I speak about God—and praying that you too may share this same praiseworthy and blessed experience.
2-1:86
我說「神」的時候,你們要立時被一道光、又被三道光所環照;
And when I say 'God,' be illumined at once by one light and by three;
2-1:87
就其特性而言,是三道光,即三個位格——或者,若有人喜歡這樣稱呼,就稱為三個「位」(因為只要這些字詞引向同一個觀念,我們便不為名稱爭執);
by three as to the properties, that is, hypostases—or, if anyone prefers so to call them, Persons (for we will not quarrel about names, so long as the syllables lead to the same conception);
2-1:88
but by one as to the principle of essence, that is, of Godhead.
2-1:89
因為這神性是在三者裡的一,而那三者乃是一;
For the Godhead is one in three, and the three are one;
2-1:90
the three in whom is the Godhead, or, to speak more accurately, who are the Godhead.
2-1:91
μεν·
至於那過與不及的兩極,我們且都撇下不論;
But let us leave aside the excesses and deficiencies;
2-1:92
我們既不使那合一成為混淆,也不使那分別成為相離;
neither making the unity a confusion, nor the distinction an estrangement;
2-1:93
因為撒伯流的收併與亞流的割裂,都要遠離我們——這兩樣惡正相對立,在不虔上卻是等同的;
for far be from us alike both the contraction of Sabellius and the division of Arius—evils diametrically opposite, yet equal in impiety;
2-1:94
for why must we either wrongly fuse God together, or cut Him up into inequality?
2-1:95
但在我們,只有一位神,就是父,萬有都本於祂;又有一位主,就是耶穌基督,萬有都藉著祂;又有一位聖靈,萬有都在祂裡面;
But for us there is one God the Father, of whom are all things, and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and one Holy Spirit, in whom are all things;
2-1:96
the 'of whom,' and 'through whom,' and 'in whom' not dividing the natures (for then neither the prepositions nor the order of the names would shift), but characterizing the properties of one and unconfused nature.
2-1:97
這也是顯而易見的,因為這三者又被聚歸於一——只要人不草率地讀那同一位使徒的這段話:「萬有都是本於祂、藉著祂、歸於祂」;
And this is plain from the fact that they are again gathered into one, if one reads, not carelessly, that passage in the same apostle: 'Of Him, and through Him, and unto Him are all things;'
2-1:98
to Him be the glory unto the ages.
2-1:99
父就是父,是無始的;
The Father is Father, and without beginning;
2-1:100
The Son is Son, and not without beginning.
2-1:101
Yet if you take 'beginning' in the sense of time, He is also without beginning; for He is the Maker of times, and is not under time.
2-1:102
for He is the Maker of times, not subject to time.
2-1:103
聖靈真實地是靈,確是從父而出,卻不像子那樣——因為祂不是藉著被生,而是藉著發出而來;
The Holy Spirit is truly Spirit, proceeding indeed from the Father, yet not after the manner of the Son — for it is not by generation, but by procession;
2-1:104
if one may coin some novel term for the sake of clarity.
2-1:105
父並不因祂生了子而失去祂的非受生性;
Neither does the Father depart from His unbegottenness because He has begotten;
2-1:106
nor does the Son depart from His generation because He is from the Unbegotten.
2-1:107
For how could it? Nor does the Spirit change into either Father or Son, because it proceeds and because it is God — even if this does not seem so to the ungodly.
2-1:108
For how could a distinctive property remain, if it were moved and changed about? But those who set up unbegottenness and generation as natures of gods bearing the same name would perhaps also estrange Adam and Seth from one another in nature — since the one was not from flesh,
2-1:109
while the other was from Adam and Eve — they would thus alienate them from one another according to nature.
2-1:110
There is therefore one God in three, and the three are one, as we have said.
2-1:111
既然事情是如此——或不如說,這乃是如此——又既然敬拜不該僅限於在上的眾靈,地上也當有一些敬拜者,好叫萬有都充滿神的榮耀,因萬有也是屬神的;
Since these things are thus — or rather, this is so — and since worship ought not to be confined to the heavenly beings alone, but there should also be some worshippers below, that all things might be filled with the glory of God, seeing they are also of God;
2-1:112
for this reason man is created, honoured with the hand of God and with His image.
2-1:113
But to overlook this man, when by the envy of the devil and the bitter taste of sin he was being pitiably separated from God his Maker — that was not of God.
2-1:114
於是發生了什麼?關乎我們的這偉大奧祕是什麼?諸般本性被更新了,神成了人;
What comes to pass? And what is the great mystery concerning us? Natures are made new, and God becomes man;
2-1:115
神的兒子甘願既成為、又被稱為人子;
and the Son of God consents both to become and to be called the Son of Man;
2-1:116
並非改變祂原本的所是——因祂是不改變的——而是取了祂原本所無的,因祂愛世人;好叫那不可被容納的得以被容納,藉著肉身為媒介、如同藉著帷幕與我們交談;
not changing what He was — for He is unchangeable — but assuming what He was not, for He loves mankind; that the Uncontainable might be contained, conversing with us through the medium of flesh as through a veil;
2-1:117
since the nature subject to birth and decay could not bear His Godhead in its purity.
2-1:118
祂並非僅在「成為」中是神,也非僅以肉身而為心智,非僅在時間中是那超乎時間者,非僅以度量而為那不可被界限者;
He is not God only by becoming, nor mind only by flesh, nor the Timeless only by time, nor the Uncircumscribed only by measure;
2-1:119
but also birth joined with virginity, and dishonour with Him who is higher than all honour, and impassibility with passion, and immortality with corruption.
2-1:120
因為那行惡的詭詐者既以為自己無可匹敵,曾用「可成為神」的盼望誘惑了我們,如今卻被肉身的遮掩所誘騙;
For since the sophist of wickedness supposed himself invincible, having beguiled us by the hope of becoming divine, he is himself beguiled by the screen of flesh;
2-1:121
so that, assailing Adam, he might fall upon God, and thus the new Adam might restore the old, and the condemnation of the flesh be undone, death being slain by flesh.
2-1:122
We have therefore duly kept the prelude to the feast at His Nativity — I, the leader of the feast, and you, and all that is in the world and above the world.
2-1:123
我們隨星而奔,與博士一同敬拜,與牧人一同蒙光照,與天使一同頌讚;與西面一同將祂抱在懷中,與那年邁貞潔的亞拿一同稱謝;
We ran with the star, and worshipped with the Magi, were illumined with the shepherds, and glorified with the angels; with Symeon we took Him in our arms, and with Anna the aged and chaste we gave thanks;
2-1:124
and thanks be to Him who came as a stranger to His own, because He glorified the stranger.
2-1:125
But now there is another work of Christ, and another mystery.
2-1:126
I cannot contain my joy; I am rapt with God; I all but, like John, proclaim the good news — though I am not the Forerunner, yet I come from the wilderness.
2-1:127
Christ is being illumined; let us shine together with Him.
2-1:128
Christ is being baptized; let us go down with Him, that we may also come up with Him.
2-1:129
Only this? Or is it needful carefully to observe the other points as well — who He is, and from whom, and at what time? He who is pure, baptized by John, beginning with His signs; that we may learn what, and be taught what? To purify ourselves beforehand, to be humble-minded, and to preach in perfection, both of spiritual and of bodily age.
2-1:130
This is for those who treat baptism carelessly, and do not prepare themselves beforehand, nor secure the safety of their redemption through a settled habit toward the good.
2-1:131
For even though the gift grants remission of past sins — for it is a gift — yet it is then all the more worthy of reverence, lest we return to the same vomit.
2-1:132
This is for those who exalt themselves against the stewards of the mystery, if they should excel in some worthiness.
2-1:133
The third point is for those who presume upon their youth, and think every season to be one of teaching or of presidency.
2-1:134
你竟輕看這潔淨嗎?它是由約翰施行的;
And do you despise the cleansing? It was administered by John;
2-1:135
你竟起來抗拒那為你開路的報信者嗎?祂受洗時已三十歲;
and do you rise up against your own herald? He was thirty years old;
2-1:136
for everyone who does wrong is ready with an excuse.
2-1:137
然而稀有的個例並非教會的規矩;
But the rare case is not the law of the Church;
2-1:138
even as one swallow does not make a spring, nor one line the geometer, nor one voyage the seaman.
2-1:139
Nevertheless John baptizes; Jesus approaches —
2-1:140
perhaps to sanctify the Baptist himself,
2-1:141
但最顯明的,乃是要把整個舊亞當埋葬於水中;
but most evidently to bury all the old Adam in the water;
2-1:142
並且在這些之先、為這些緣故,先使約但河成聖;
and before these and on their behalf, to sanctify the Jordan;
2-1:143
that, just as He was spirit and flesh, so He might perfect us by the Spirit and by water.
2-1:144
"I have need to be baptized by You," says the lamp to the Sun, the voice to the Word, the friend to the Bridegroom, he who is above all that are born of women to the Firstborn of all creation, he who leaped for joy from the womb to Him who was worshipped while in the womb, the forerunner who has run before and shall run before, to Him who has appeared and shall appear.
2-1:145
"I have need to be baptized by You."
2-1:146
因為他知道自己將要受殉道之洗;
For he knew that he would be baptized with martyrdom;
2-1:147
or, like Peter, that he would have not his feet only cleansed.
2-1:148
「你竟到我這裡來嗎?」這話也帶著預言的意味;
"And do You come to me?" This too was prophetic;
2-1:149
for he knew that he would follow Christ, who would soon depart before him.
2-1:150
For he knew that after a little while He Himself would baptize the Baptist.
2-1:151
And what is the winnowing fan? The cleansing.
2-1:152
And what is the fire? The consuming of what is light and chaffy, and the fervour of the Spirit.
2-1:153
And what is the axe? The cutting away of the soul that is incurable even after the dung.
2-1:154
And what is the sword? The cutting of the Word, which divides the worse from the better, and severs the believer from the unbeliever, and stirs up son and daughter and bride against father and mother and mother-in-law — the new and fresh
2-1:155
against the old and shadowy.
2-1:156
And what is the latchet of the sandal, which you do not loose — you who baptize Jesus, you of the wilderness and without sustenance, the new Elijah, more than a prophet, inasmuch as you also beheld Him whom you prophesied, the mediator of the Old and the New? What is this? Perhaps the principle of His sojourn and of the flesh, of which not even the smallest part is easily loosed — not only by those still carnal and infants in Christ, but not even by those who are like John in the Spirit.
2-1:157
But also Jesus comes up out of the water.
2-1:158
For He raises up the world together with Himself, and sees the heavens opened which Adam had shut against himself and his posterity, even as he was shut out of paradise by the flaming sword.
2-1:159
聖靈也為祂的神性作見證;
And the Spirit bears witness to His Godhead;
2-1:160
for it comes upon Him who is like to Him; the One borne witness to is from above.
2-1:161
And it comes as a dove, for it honours the body, since this too by deification is God — seen in bodily form.
2-1:162
And besides, from of old the dove was wont to announce the cessation of the flood.
2-1:163
但你若按體積與重量來衡量神性,因此就以為聖靈微小,只因祂以鴿子的形狀降臨——你這在至大之事上心思狹隘的人哪——那你也大可輕看天國了,因它被比作一粒芥菜種;
But if you judge Godhead by bulk and weight, and on this account the Spirit seems small to you because it came in the form of a dove — O you who are petty-minded in the greatest matters — it is high time for you to dishonour the Kingdom of Heaven as well, because it is likened to a grain of mustard seed;
2-1:164
and to exalt the adversary above the majesty of Jesus, because the one is called a great mountain, and leviathan, and king of those in the waters,
2-1:165
while the other is named a lamb, and a pearl, and a drop, and the like.
2-1:166
But since this is the festival of baptism, and we must endure a little hardship together with Him who for our sake took form, and was baptized, and was crucified, come, let us reflect a little on the difference of baptisms, that we may depart hence cleansed.
2-1:167
摩西曾施洗,卻是在水中;
Moses baptized, but in water;
2-1:168
and before this, in the cloud and in the sea.
2-1:169
這乃是預表,正如保羅所認定的;
This was figurative, as Paul also holds;
2-1:170
那嗎哪,預表生命的糧;
the manna, of the Bread of life;
2-1:171
the drink, of the divine drink.
2-1:172
約翰也曾施洗,但已不再是按猶太人的方式;
John also baptized, no longer indeed after the Jewish manner;
2-1:173
因為他不單用水,更是為叫人悔改;
for it was not in water only, but also unto repentance;
2-1:174
然而尚非全然屬靈的;
yet not wholly spiritual as yet;
2-1:175
for he does not add the words, "in the Spirit."
2-1:176
Jesus also baptizes, but in the Spirit.
2-1:177
And how is He not God — that I may venture a little, whereby you too may become God? I know also a fourth baptism, that which is by martyrdom and blood, with which Christ Himself was baptized — and one far more venerable than the others, inasmuch as it is not defiled by later stains.
2-1:178
我還曉得第五種,就是眼淚的洗;
I know also yet a fifth, that of tears;
2-1:179
卻是更為費力的——如那每夜用眼淚把床榻與被褥浸濕的人,他的傷處竟因自己的罪而發出惡臭;
but more laborious — like him who every night washes his bed and his couch with his tears, whose very wounds gave forth a stench because of his sin;
2-1:180
他哀慟愁苦而行,效法瑪拿西的回轉,並尼尼微人那蒙憐憫的自卑;
who walks in mourning and with downcast countenance; who imitates the conversion of Manasseh, and the humbling of the Ninevites that found mercy;
2-1:181
他在聖殿中說出那稅吏的話語,比那自誇的法利賽人倒算為義;
who utters the publican's words in the temple, and is justified rather than the boastful Pharisee;
2-1:182
who bows himself down like the Canaanite woman, and seeks lovingkindness, and the crumbs that are the food of a dog exceedingly hungry.
2-1:183
As for me — for I confess that I am a man, a changeable creature of fluid nature — I both receive this gladly, and worship Him who has given it, and impart it to others, and offer mercy in return for mercy.
2-1:184
For I myself also know that I am compassed with weakness, and that as I shall measure, so shall I be measured.
2-1:185
Do you not weep a single tear? May you never meet with such a judge!
2-1:186
Are you not ashamed before the lovingkindness of Jesus, who took our infirmities and bore our diseases, who came not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance, who desires mercy rather than sacrifice, who forgives sins seventy times seven? How blessed would your loftiness be, if it were purity and not pride — making laws beyond what is human, and undoing amendment by despair!
2-1:187
因為這兩樣同是惡——一是放縱不加管束,一是定罪而不肯饒恕;
For it is equally an evil — both unchastened laxity, and unforgiving condemnation;
2-1:188
the one letting go the rein entirely, the other choking by its harshness.
2-1:189
But now I fear lest, teeming with sores, you bring in that which is incurable.
2-1:190
Or do you not even receive him who has been perfected through blood? This too belongs to your madness.
2-1:191
連那在哥林多犯了罪的人也不接納嗎?但保羅見他已經改過,便重新堅定了向他所存的愛心;
Nor him who transgressed at Corinth? But Paul confirmed his love toward him, when he saw his amendment;
2-1:192
lest such a one should be swallowed up by excessive sorrow, being overwhelmed by the immoderateness of the rebuke.
2-1:193
Nor do you allow young widows to marry, because of the frailty of their age? But Paul ventured even this — Paul, whose disciple you of course claim to be — he who reached even to the fourth heaven, and another paradise, and heard unutterable words, and embraced a wider circle within the Gospel.
2-1:194
But these things were not after baptism, you say.
2-1:195
What is the proof? Either show it, or do not condemn.
2-1:196
But if it is doubtful, let lovingkindness prevail.
2-1:197
But Novatus, you say, did not receive those who lapsed in the persecution.
2-1:198
那又如何呢?他們若不悔改,這樣做倒也合理;
What of it? If they did not repent, then justly so;
2-1:199
因為連我也不接納那些既不肯屈服、又不肯誠心屈服、也不肯以與惡相稱的改過來補償的人;
for neither do I receive those who either do not bend, or do not do so worthily, nor make amends counterbalancing the evil;
2-1:200
and when I do receive them, I assign them the place that befits them.
2-1:201
But if they have melted away in tears, I will not refuse to imitate them.
2-1:202
And what law is the misanthropy of Novatus to me — he who did not punish covetousness, that second idolatry?
2-1:203
Let us magnify the Lord together.
2-1:204
Let none of you dare to say, even if he has greatly trusted in himself:
2-1:205
"Touch me not, for I am clean — and who is as I am?" Impart to us also of your brightness.
2-1:206
But do we not persuade you? Then we will weep on your behalf as well.
2-1:207
These men, then — if they are willing, let them walk our way, which is also Christ's; but if not, let them go their own.
2-1:208
Perhaps there they shall be baptized with fire, that last baptism, more painful and more lasting, which devours matter like grass, and consumes the lightness of all wickedness.
2-1:209
But let us this day honour the baptism of Christ, and keep the feast well — not revelling in the belly, but rejoicing in spirit.
2-1:210
And how shall we make merry? "Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean."
2-1:211
你們的罪若像朱紅、血色稍淺的,就要變得潔白如雪;
If you are crimson in sin, and less bloody, be made white as snow;
2-1:212
but if you are scarlet, and men perfected in blood, at least attain to the whiteness of wool.
2-1:213
In any case, be purified and keep on being purified.
2-1:214
Ὡς.
因為神所最喜悅的,莫過於人的改過與得救,一切話語、一切奧祕都是為了人;
For in nothing does God rejoice so much as in the amendment and salvation of man, for whom is every word and every mystery;
2-1:215
that you may become as lights in the world, a life-giving power to the rest of mankind; that, standing as perfect lights beside the great Light, you may be initiated into the illumination there above, being enlightened by the Trinity more purely and more clearly — that Trinity of whose one radiance, springing from one Godhead, you have now in measure received a foretaste, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory and dominion unto the ages of ages. Amen.
