By the same author: On Pentecost.
3-1:2
Let us speak briefly and thoughtfully about the feast, that we may keep it spiritually.
3-1:3
因為各人有各人慶賀的事物;
For one man finds his festival in one thing, another in another;
3-1:4
but to the servant of the Word, his festival is a discourse — and of discourses, the one most suited to the occasion.
3-1:5
And nothing so gladdens the lover of what is good as for the lover of feasts to celebrate spiritually.
3-1:6
猶太人也守節,卻是照著字句;
The Jew also keeps festival, but according to the letter;
3-1:7
for pursuing the bodily law, he has not attained to the spiritual law.
3-1:8
希臘人也守節,卻是照著肉體,且是為敬奉自己的神祇與鬼魔;
The Greek too keeps festival, but according to the body, and to honour his own gods and demons;
3-1:9
of whom some, by their own account, are makers of passions, while others were honoured because they sprang from passions.
3-1:10
so that sinning becomes an honour to the god, to whom the passion flees for refuge, as to something venerable.
3-1:11
We also keep festival, but as it seems good to the Spirit.
3-1:12
And this is our keeping of festival: to lay up something in the soul of those things that stand fast and abide, and not of those that pass away and dissolve, and that flatter the senses a little, but for the most part mar and harm them — at least according to my view.
3-1:13
For sufficient unto the body is its own evil.
3-1:14
Why should the flame need more fuel, or the wild beast more abundant food, that it may become harder to restrain, and more violent than reason? (II.)
3-1:15
The beginning of the discourse is this (for it must be said, even if our discourse becomes a little too digressive, and the lovers of learning must take some pains, that we may mix in, as it were, some seasoning to the festival):
3-1:16
希伯來人的子孫尊重七這個數目,這是出於摩西的律法,正如畢達哥拉斯學派後來尊重那「四元數」,並以它起誓;
The children of the Hebrews honour the number seven, from the legislation of Moses, even as the Pythagoreans later honoured the tetractys, which indeed they made an oath;
3-1:17
and the eight and the thirty, the followers of Simon and Marcion, who indeed name certain Aeons equal in number to these, and honour them.
3-1:18
I do not know by what principles of analogy, or according to what power of this number they honour it — but honour it they do.
3-1:19
This much is plain: that in six days God, having brought matter into existence and given it form, and adorned it with all manner of kinds and combinations, and made this world that we now behold, rested on the seventh from His works — as the very name Sabbath shows, which signifies "rest" in Hebrew.
3-1:20
But if there is also some loftier principle concerning these matters, let others philosophize about it.
3-1:21
And their honouring of it extends not to days only, but reaches even to years.
3-1:22
Ἡ μὲν οὖν τῶν.
論到日子,這尊崇就是安息日;這是他們中間不住受尊崇的,正如除酵也是同樣的數目;
Now the honour of days is the Sabbath; this is what is continually honoured among them, even as the removal of leaven is equal in number;
3-1:23
and the honour of years is the sabbatical year of release.
3-1:24
And not in weeks only, but also in weeks of weeks, alike in days and in years.
3-1:25
「日子的七」生出五旬節,這在他們中間是稱為聖的一日;
Now the weeks of days bring forth Pentecost, a day called holy among them;
3-1:26
and the weeks of years bring forth what is called among them the Jubilee, which likewise has release of land, and freedom of slaves, and the relinquishing of purchased possessions.
3-1:27
For this people consecrates to God not only firstfruits of produce, nor of firstborn, but already also firstfruits of days and of years.
3-1:28
Thus the honoured number seven introduced along with itself the honour of Pentecost.
3-1:29
For seven, multiplied by itself, generates fifty, lacking one day, which we have taken in addition from the age to come — the same being both an eighth and a first, or rather one and indissoluble.
3-1:30
to give a portion to the seven, and also to the eight, as some before us have understood Solomon's saying.
3-1:31
Of the honour of the seven there are many testimonies, but a few out of many will suffice us.
3-1:32
Thus there are seven honoured spirits named.
3-1:33
For Isaiah, I think, was pleased to call the operations of the Spirit "Spirits."
3-1:34
And the righteous man is delivered out of distresses six times, and in the seventh is not even touched.
3-1:35
But the sinner is forgiven not seven times only, but even seventy times seven.
3-1:36
And again, on the contrary (for the punishment of wickedness is also praiseworthy), Cain is avenged sevenfold — that is, exacted penalties for fratricide —
3-1:37
while Lamech seventy times seven, because he was a murderer after the law and the condemnation.
3-1:38
那些惡鄰要在自己懷中得著七倍的報應;
And the wicked neighbours receive sevenfold into their bosom;
3-1:39
智慧的房屋是用七根柱子支撐的;
and the house of Wisdom is upheld by seven pillars;
3-1:40
and the stone of Zerubbabel is adorned with as many eyes.
3-1:41
And God is praised seven times a day.
3-1:42
Καὶ μὴν.
Moreover, the barren woman bears seven, the perfect number — the opposite of her who is imperfect in children.
3-1:43
And if we must also consider the ancient histories, I call to mind Enoch, the seventh among the forefathers, honoured by being translated.
3-1:44
And I call to mind Abraham, the twenty-first, glorified by the patriarchate, with the addition of a yet greater mystery.
3-1:45
For the seven, tripled, produces this number.
3-1:46
And one of the all-daring might venture to come even to the new Adam, my God and Lord Jesus Christ, reckoned the seventy-seventh from the old Adam who was under sin, according to Luke's genealogy that traces backward.
3-1:47
And I call to mind the seven trumpets of Joshua son of Nun, and as many circuits, and days, and priests, by which the walls of Jericho were shaken down.
3-1:48
And likewise the seventh stretching, as it were mystical, of the threefold breathing of Elijah the prophet, which breathed life into the son of the widow of Zarephath; and the same prophet's flooding of the wood, equal in number, when he consumed the sacrifice with fire sent from God, and condemned the prophets of shame, who could not do the like at his challenge.
3-1:49
So also the seventh looking-out for the cloud, enjoined upon the servant; and Elisha's equal bending over the son of the Shunammite, which rekindled his breath.
3-1:50
And of the same teaching, I think (not to mention the seven-branched and seven-lamped lampstand of the temple), is the priest perfected in seven days, and the leper cleansed in seven, and the temple consecrated in as many.
3-1:51
And in the seventieth year the people is brought back from captivity, that what holds in units might hold also in tens, and the mystery of the seven might be honoured by a more perfect number.
3-1:52
Why should I tell of things far off? Jesus Himself, the pure perfection, knows how to feed five thousand in the wilderness with five loaves, and knows how again to feed four thousand with seven.
3-1:53
那剩下的零碎:在那邊是十二個籃子,在這邊是七個筐子;
And the leftovers of the meal: there, twelve baskets; here, seven hampers;
3-1:54
neither without reason, I think, nor unworthily of the Spirit.
3-1:55
And you too, gathering for yourself, might observe many numbers that have in them something deeper than what appears.
3-1:56
但對眼前的時機最有用的乃是這一點:希伯來人或許是照著這些道理、或極近乎這些、或甚至更為神聖的道理來尊崇五旬節這一日,而我們也尊崇它;
But what is most useful for the present occasion is this: that according to these principles, perhaps, or very near to them, or even some more divine, the Hebrews honour the day of Pentecost, and we honour it too;
3-1:57
even as there are also certain other of the Hebrew observances, fulfilled in a figurative way among them, but restored to us in a mystical way.
3-1:58
Having said this much by way of preface concerning the day, let us proceed to what follows in our discourse.
3-1:59
We are keeping Pentecost, and the coming of the Spirit, and the appointed time of the promise, and the fulfilment of our hope.
3-1:60
How great and venerable it is!
3-1:61
For I shrink from speaking of the things of the body, until some argument should persuade me that it is better to be rid of the body.
3-1:62
But the things of the Spirit begin.
3-1:63
Now what were the things of Christ? The Virgin, the birth, the manger, the swaddling clothes, angels glorifying, shepherds running, the course of the star, the worship and gift-bringing of the Magi, Herod's slaughter of the children, Jesus fleeing into Egypt, returning from Egypt, being circumcised, being baptized, being borne witness to from above, being tempted, being stoned for our sake (to whom a pattern had to be given of suffering hardship for the Word), being betrayed, nailed up, buried, rising again, ascending — many of which He suffers even now:
3-1:64
從那些恨惡基督的人,祂既領受又擔當那凌辱之事(因祂是恆久忍耐的);
from those who hate Christ He both receives and bears the things of dishonour (for He is long-suffering);
3-1:65
but from those who love Christ, the things of chastisement.
3-1:66
祂也延緩——對那些人延緩祂的忿怒,對我們延緩祂的恩慈;
And He defers — as toward those His wrath, so toward us His kindness;
3-1:67
或許是給前者悔改的時機,卻在我們身上試驗我們的渴慕,看我們是否在患難中、在為敬虔而有的爭戰裡仍不灰心;
to the former perhaps granting time for repentance, but in us proving our longing, whether we faint not in tribulations and in the contests for godliness;
3-1:68
as is the principle of the divine economy from above, and of His unsearchable judgments, by which He wisely directs our affairs.
3-1:69
基督的諸事就是如此;
Such, then, are the things of Christ;
3-1:70
and we shall behold what follows as yet more glorious — and may we be found worthy to behold it.
3-1:71
至於聖靈之事,願聖靈與我同在,並照我所願的賜我言語;
But as for the things of the Spirit, may the Spirit be present with me, and grant me utterance, as much as I desire;
3-1:72
or if not so much, yet at least as much as is fitting for the occasion.
3-1:73
In any case He will be present in lordly fashion, and not as a servant, nor awaiting a command, as some suppose.
3-1:74
For He breathes where He wills, and upon whom He wills, and when, and as much as He wills.
3-1:75
Thus we too are inspired both to think and to speak concerning the Spirit.
3-1:76
As for the Holy Spirit — those who degrade it to the level of a creature are insolent, and evil servants, and worst of the worst.
3-1:77
But those who account it God are inspired and bright in understanding.
3-1:78
至於那些甚至如此稱呼祂的人——若是向心地良善的人這樣說,便是高尚的;
And those who even name it so — if to the well-disposed, are lofty;
3-1:79
但若是向心智淺薄的人這樣說,便不是審慎的管家;
but if to the lowly, are not prudent stewards;
3-1:80
竟把珍珠交託給污泥,把雷聲交託給孱弱的聽覺,把太陽交託給軟弱的眼睛,把乾糧交託給那還在喝奶的人;
entrusting a pearl to mud, and the sound of thunder to a feeble hearing, and the sun to weaker eyes, and solid food to those still being given milk to drink;
3-1:81
他們本該逐步引領這些人向前,使他們進到更高之事,以光賜光,以真理引出真理;
whereas they ought rather to lead them forward little by little, and advance them to higher things, bestowing light by means of light, and procuring truth by means of truth;
3-1:82
wherefore we too, leaving aside for now the more perfect doctrine (for the time is not yet), will discourse with them in this manner.
3-1:83
你們這些人哪,你們若連聖靈是非受造的、是超乎時間的都不肯承認,那麼這顯然是那相反之靈的運行;
If you do not even confess, O you people, that the Holy Spirit is uncreated, nor timeless, then plainly the operation is of the opposite spirit;
3-1:84
for allow my zeal to venture a little boldness.
3-1:85
But if you are at least so far sound as to flee manifest impiety, and to set outside the rank of servitude that which makes even us free, then consider the rest yourselves, together with the Holy Spirit, and with us.
3-1:86
For I am persuaded that you in some measure partake of Him, and I will deliberate with you as with those already of the household.
3-1:87
你們要麼指給我看那介乎僕役與主權之間的中間地帶,好讓我把聖靈的尊位安放在那裡;
Either give me the middle ground between servitude and lordship, that there I may place the dignity of the Spirit;
3-1:88
or, if you flee servitude, it is not unclear where you will rank the thing in question.
3-1:89
But you are vexed at the syllables, and you stumble at the word, and this becomes to you a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence — even as Christ was to some.
3-1:90
Let us come to agreement with one another spiritually.
3-1:91
Let us become lovers of the brethren rather than lovers of self.
3-1:92
ὁμο.
你們可以用你們更為敬重的別的字眼來承認那本性;
confess the nature in other words, which you hold in greater reverence;
3-1:93
我們便要醫治你們,如同醫治軟弱的人;
and we will heal you as the weak;
3-1:94
stealing in by some means even of the things that please.
3-1:95
因為這是可恥的,實在可恥,也甚不合理:心靈健全的人竟在一個音聲上斤斤計較,把寶藏藏起來,彷彿吝惜不肯給人,又彷彿怕連自己的舌頭也被分別為聖;
For it is shameful, yes shameful, and quite unreasonable, that those who are sound in soul should be petty about the mere sound, and hide the treasure as though grudging it to others, or as though afraid lest you should sanctify your tongue as well;
3-1:96
but yet more shameful for us to suffer the very thing we charge against others, and, while condemning pettiness, ourselves to be petty about mere letters.
3-1:97
你們這些人哪,要承認三一神乃是同一神性——或者,你們若願意,乃是同一本性;
Confess the Trinity to be of one Godhead, O you people — or, if you will, of one nature;
3-1:98
and we will ask the word "God" for you from the Spirit.
3-1:99
Let me speak yet more plainly and briefly:
3-1:100
Neither do you call us to account for the loftier word (for there is no envy at an ascent), nor will we for the present charge against you that which is attainable — until by another road also you are borne to the same lodging.
3-1:101
For we do not seek to conquer, but to gain brethren, by whose separation from us we are torn.
3-1:102
我們把這些話對你們說,因為我們在你們中間發現了某種帶有生命之物——對你們這些在「子」的真道上健全的人說的;
These things we say to you, among whom we find something life-giving — to you who are sound concerning the Son;
3-1:103
我們欽佩你們的生活,卻不能完全稱許你們的教義;
whose life we admire, but whose doctrine we do not altogether approve;
3-1:104
you who have the things of the Spirit, take to yourselves the Spirit also, that you may not only contend, but contend lawfully — whence comes also the crown.
3-1:105
May this be given you as the reward of your manner of life: to confess the Spirit perfectly, and to proclaim, with us and before us, all that is worthy.
3-1:106
I dare even something greater on your behalf — to utter that saying of the Apostle.
3-1:107
So greatly do I cling to you, and so greatly do I revere this seemly garb of yours, and the hue of self-restraint, and these sacred companies, and the venerable virginity and purity, and the all-night psalmody, and the love of the poor, and of the brethren, and of strangers, that I am willing even to be anathema from Christ, and to suffer somewhat as one condemned —
3-1:108
if only you would stand with us, and together glorify the Trinity.
3-1:109
至於那些其餘的人,又何須多說呢——他們顯然是死的(惟有那按自己能力使死人復活的基督才能使他們復生),他們雖以理智相連,卻惡劣地因地域而分裂,彼此爭鬧,正如斜視的眼睛,明明看著同一件東西,卻不是在視覺上、而是在位置上彼此相左;
For concerning the others, what need is there even to speak — those who are plainly dead (whom Christ alone can raise, He who gives life to the dead according to His own power), who are evilly separated by place though bound together by reason, and who wrangle with one another as much as eyes that are distorted, looking at the one thing, yet at variance not in sight but in position;
3-1:110
倘若該歸咎於他們的是斜視,而非全然失明的話。但我既已對你們適度地陳述了我的話,來吧,讓我們再回到聖靈這題目上;
if indeed distortion, and not blindness, is to be charged against them. But since I have moderately set forth my words to you, come, let us return again to the Spirit;
3-1:111
and I think you too will by now follow along.
3-1:112
聖靈向來就有,現今仍有,將來也必有——既無起頭,也無止息,乃是永遠與父和子同列、同被數算;
The Holy Spirit always was, and is, and shall be — neither beginning nor ceasing, but ever ranked and numbered together with the Father and the Son;
3-1:113
for it was not fitting that the Son should ever be wanting to the Father, or the Spirit to the Son.
3-1:114
For the Godhead would thus be most greatly inglorious, as though coming, by way of an afterthought, to the filling-up of its perfection.
3-1:115
所以祂向來是那被分享者,而非那分享者;
It was therefore ever that which is partaken, not that which partakes;
3-1:116
是那使人完全者,而非那被成全者;
that which perfects, not that which is perfected;
3-1:117
是那使人成聖者,而非那被分別為聖者;
that which sanctifies, not that which is sanctified;
3-1:118
向來與自己相同,也與那些和祂同列者相同;
ever the same with itself, and with those with whom it is ranked;
3-1:119
祂是不可見的、超乎時間的、不可被容納的、不改變的、無性質的、無數量的、無形狀的、不可觸摸的、自動的、常動的、有自主意志的、自有能力的、全能的(縱然如同那屬於獨生子的一切,照樣那屬於聖靈的一切,也都歸溯於那第一因);
invisible, timeless, uncontainable, unchangeable, without quality, without quantity, without form, intangible, self-moving, ever-moving, with free will, self-powerful, all-powerful (even if, like all that belongs to the Only-begotten, so too all that belongs to the Spirit is referred back to the first Cause);
3-1:120
祂是自有的良善,也是良善的泉源;
self-good, and the fountain of goodness;
3-1:121
是正直的靈、為首的靈、為主的靈,差遣人、分派人、為自己建造殿宇、引導人、隨己意運行、分賜恩賜;
a Spirit upright, sovereign, lordly, sending forth, separating, making for itself a temple, guiding, working as it wills, distributing gifts;
3-1:122
是賜人得兒子名分的靈,是真理、智慧、聰明、知識、敬虔、謀略、能力、敬畏的靈——就是那些已被列舉之事的靈;
a Spirit of adoption, of truth, of wisdom, of understanding, of knowledge, of godliness, of counsel, of might, of fear — of the things that have been enumerated;
3-1:123
through whom the Father is known, and the Son is glorified, and by whom alone they are known — one ordering, one worship, adoration, power, perfection, sanctification.
3-1:124
Why need I be lengthy? All that the Father has belongs to the Son, except unbegottenness.
3-1:125
All that the Son has belongs to the Spirit, except generation.
3-1:126
These things do not, in my view at least, distinguish in respect of essence, but are distinguished within the one essence.
3-1:127
Are you in travail over the antitheses? But I over the course of my discourse.
3-1:128
要尊崇聖靈的日子;
Honour the day of the Spirit;
3-1:129
restrain your tongue a little, if you can.
3-1:130
這篇講論論的是別樣的舌頭;
The discourse is about other tongues;
3-1:131
reverence these, or fear them, seen as they are with fire.
3-1:132
Today let us lay down doctrine; tomorrow let us deal in technicalities.
3-1:133
這些事當以奧祕的方式對待,那些事才當以戲台的方式對待;
These things mystically, those theatrically;
3-1:134
這些事是為教會的,那些事是為市場的;
these things for the churches, those for the marketplaces;
3-1:135
這些事是為清醒之人的,那些事是為醉酒之人的;
these things for the sober, those for the drunken;
3-1:136
these things for those who are in earnest, those for such as sport against the Spirit.
3-1:137
But since we have cleared away what is alien, come, let us set in order what is our own.
3-1:138
This Spirit wrought, first of all, in the angelic and heavenly powers, and in such as are first after God, and about God.
3-1:139
For from no other source comes to them their perfection and illumination, and their being hard to move, or unmovable, toward evil, than from the Holy Spirit.
3-1:140
Then in the fathers and the prophets, of whom some imaged forth God, or knew Him, while others also foreknew the future, having their ruling faculty imprinted by the Spirit, and being present with things to come as though present with them.
3-1:141
For such is the power of the Spirit.
3-1:142
其後祂運行在基督的門徒裡(至於基督,我且不說,因聖靈與祂同在,並非作為運行的能力,乃是作為一位同等尊榮者相伴隨);
Then in the disciples of Christ (for I forbear to speak of Christ, with whom He was present, not as working, but as accompanying one of equal honour);
3-1:143
and in these in threefold manner, as far as they were able to receive, and at three different times:
3-1:144
在基督藉受難得榮耀之前;
before Christ was glorified by the Passion;
3-1:145
在祂藉復活得榮耀之後;
after He was glorified by the Resurrection;
3-1:146
and after the Ascension into the heavens, or the restoration, or whatever one must call it.
3-1:147
還有那在救贖之工以後的吹氣,這顯然是一次更為神聖的灌注;
And the breathing-in after the economy, which was plainly a more divine inspiration;
3-1:148
and the present distribution of the fiery tongues, which we are now celebrating.
3-1:149
然而頭一次是模糊的;
But the first was dim;
3-1:150
第二次較為清晰;
the second more distinct;
3-1:151
and the present one more perfect — no longer present by operation, as before, but, so to speak, essentially, accompanying them and dwelling with them as a fellow-citizen.
3-1:152
因為這是相宜的:當子曾以身體的形態與我們交談之後,聖靈也當以身體的形態顯現;
For it was fitting that, when the Son had conversed with us in bodily form, it too should appear in bodily form;
3-1:153
並且當基督回到祂自己那裡之後,這一位就降臨到我們這裡;
and that, when Christ had returned to Himself, it should come down to us;
3-1:154
coming as Lord, but sent as one not opposed to God.
3-1:155
For such expressions declare concord no less than they distinguish natures.
3-1:156
"Another" — that you may ponder the equality of honour.
3-1:157
For the word "another" is set down as "another such as I."
3-1:158
And this is a name of joint-lordship, not of dishonour.
3-1:159
For "another" I know to be said not of things alien, but of things consubstantial.
3-1:160
And in tongues, because of its kinship with the Word.
3-1:161
祂以火舌的形狀降臨——我探問這是否為著潔淨之故(因為我們的講論也曉得有一種潔淨之火,凡願從各方面學習的人都可明白);
And in tongues of fire — I inquire whether on account of the purification (for our discourse knows also of a purifying fire, as is open to all who wish to learn from every side);
3-1:162
for our God is a fire, and a fire consuming wickedness — even though again you chafe, being straitened by the word "consubstantial."
3-1:163
祂以分開的形狀降臨,是因恩賜各有不同;
And divided, because of the diversity of the gifts;
3-1:164
祂以停留安坐的形狀降臨,是因那君王般的尊貴,以及祂在聖徒中間的安息;
and seated, because of the kingly and the rest in the saints;
3-1:165
since the cherubim too are the throne of God.
3-1:166
祂在一座樓房裡降臨(若我在人看來並非過於好奇、逾越了所當的話),是因那些將要領受之人的上升,以及他們從地面被高舉;
And in an upper room (if I do not seem to anyone over-curious beyond what is needful), because of the ascent of those who were to receive, and their being lifted up from the ground;
3-1:167
since by divine waters also certain upper chambers are roofed over, through which God is praised.
3-1:168
並且耶穌自己也在一座樓房裡,與那些受教進到更高之事的人一同有分於那奧祕,為要顯明這事:一面神必須在某種程度上降臨到我們這裡——我知道這在摩西的事上也曾發生過——另一面我們也必須上升,這樣便有神與人的相通,雙方的尊位得以交融。但只要雙方各守一方——一方在其崇高之處,一方在其卑微之中——那良善便不相調和,那慈愛也無從相通;
And Jesus Himself, in an upper room, shares in the mystery with those being initiated into the loftier things, that this might be shown: that on the one hand God must in some measure come down to us — which I know to have happened before in the case of Moses also — and on the other hand we must ascend, and so there come to be a communion of God with men, the dignities being blended together. But so long as each remains on its own side — the one in its exalted height, the other in its lowliness — the goodness is unmingled, and the lovingkindness incommunicable;
3-1:169
and there is a great and impassable chasm in the midst, separating not only the rich man from Lazarus and the longed-for bosom of Abraham, but the created and flowing nature from the uncreated and abiding.
3-1:170
這事曾藉眾先知傳揚出來,如那句:「主的靈在我身上」;
This was proclaimed by the prophets, as in the saying, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me";
3-1:171
又如:「有七靈要停在祂身上」;
and, "Seven Spirits shall rest upon Him";
3-1:172
又如:「主的靈降下,引導他們」;
and, "The Spirit of the Lord came down and guided them";
3-1:173
又如:「聰明的靈充滿了那會幕的建造者比撒列」;
and, "The Spirit of understanding filled Bezalel, the architect of the tabernacle";
3-1:174
又如:「那被激動的靈」;
and, "A Spirit being stirred up";
3-1:175
還有從以利沙所求的加倍之靈;
the double portion sought from Elisha;
3-1:176
And it was promised — first by Joel,
3-1:177
saying, "And it shall come to pass in the last days":
3-1:178
「我要將我的靈澆灌凡有血氣的」(就是那相信的血氣),「並你們的兒子和你們的女兒」,以及其後的話;
"I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh" (that is, the flesh that believes), "and upon your sons and upon your daughters," and what follows;
3-1:179
and afterward by Jesus, who was glorified and gave glory in return, as to the Father, and by the Father.
3-1:180
And the promise, being bountiful, is that it shall abide together and continue with us throughout the ages — whether now with those who are worthy according to the time, or hereafter with those counted worthy of the things there above, whenever we shall have kept it whole in our manner of life, and not cast it off in such measure as we sin.
3-1:181
This Spirit creates together with the Son, both the creation and the resurrection.
3-1:182
願這話說服你:「諸天藉耶和華的話而立,萬象藉祂口中的氣而成」;
And let this persuade you: "By the Word of the Lord were the heavens established, and all the host of them by the Spirit of His mouth";
3-1:183
又如:「造我的是神的靈」;
and, "The divine Spirit it is that made me";
3-1:184
and, "The breath of the Almighty it is that teaches me."
3-1:185
"You will send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created, and You will renew the face of the earth."
3-1:186
And let this persuade you: that no one can see or receive the Kingdom unless he has been born again from above by the Spirit, and has been cleansed of his former birth—which is a mystery of the night—by a daytime and luminous re-fashioning, by which each one fashions himself anew.
3-1:187
This Spirit (for it is most wise and most loving toward mankind): if it takes hold of a shepherd, it makes him a psalmist who by his song drives away evil spirits, and reveals him as a king of Israel.
3-1:188
If it takes a goatherd who scrapes sycamore figs, it makes him a prophet.
3-1:189
If it takes hold of a gifted youth, it makes him a judge of elders, even beyond his years.
3-1:190
If it finds fishermen, it nets them for Christ, so that by the weaving of the word they catch the whole world.
3-1:191
Take for me Peter and Andrew, and the sons of thunder, who thundered forth the things of the Spirit.
3-1:192
If it takes tax collectors, it gains them for discipleship, and makes them merchants of souls.
3-1:193
So says Matthew, yesterday a tax collector, and today an evangelist.
3-1:194
If it takes fervent persecutors, it redirects their zeal, and makes Pauls instead of Sauls, as much toward godliness as it had once seized them toward wickedness.
3-1:195
這也是溫柔的靈;
This is also a Spirit of gentleness;
3-1:196
and yet it is provoked against those who sin.
3-1:197
Therefore let us prove it to be gentle and not wrathful, confessing its worth and fleeing from blasphemy, and let us not wish to behold it angered to the point of refusing pardon.
3-1:198
這也是今日使我向你們作大膽傳報者的緣由;
This is what makes me also a bold herald to you today;
3-1:199
εἰ μὲν.
我若因此不必受甚麼苦,便感謝神;
and if I am to suffer nothing for it, thanks be to God;
3-1:200
我若必須受苦,也照樣感謝神;
but if I am to suffer, thanks be to God even so;
3-1:201
前者,是為叫祂寬容那恨我們的人;
the former, that He may spare those who hate us;
3-1:202
the latter, that He may sanctify us, who have received this as the reward of the priestly ministry of the Gospel—to be perfected through blood.
3-1:203
他們所說的是外邦的方言,並非本地的話,這奇事是大的:未曾學過的人竟說出話來;
Now they were speaking in foreign tongues and not in their native ones, and the marvel was great: a word spoken by those who had never learned it;
3-1:204
and the sign was for the unbelievers, not for the believers, that it might be an accusation against the unbelievers, even as it is written:
3-1:205
"For with men of strange tongues and with the lips of others will I speak to this people, and not even so will they listen to Me, says the Lord."
3-1:206
Pause here a little, and ponder how you will divide the passage.
3-1:207
For the expression has something ambiguous in it, distinguished by the punctuation. Did each one hear in his own dialect—so to speak, one voice being uttered, but many being heard, the air being thus struck, and, to put it more plainly, the one voice becoming many voices?
3-1:208
Or should we pause at "they heard," and join "those who spoke in their own tongues" to what follows, so that it reads: "those who spoke in tongues, namely in the tongues proper to the hearers"—which were foreign to the speakers?
3-1:209
因為照前一種解法,這奇事更該歸於聽見的人,而非說話的人;
For in the former case the marvel would belong rather to the hearers than to the speakers;
3-1:210
those very ones who are condemned as drunkards—plainly because it was they themselves who, by the Spirit, were working the wonder concerning the tongues.
3-1:211
然而那古時口音的變亂也是值得稱讚的(當那些惡毒、不敬虔卻口音相同的人建造那座塔的時候——正如今日也有些人膽敢如此行);
Yet praiseworthy too was the ancient division of tongues (when those who, wickedly and godlessly, spoke with one voice were building the tower—just as some now dare to do);
3-1:212
因為他們同心合意之念隨著口音的分歧一同瓦解,便拆毀了他們的工程;
for the unanimity, broken up along with the division of speech, dissolved their enterprise;
3-1:213
but more praiseworthy still is the wonder now being worked.
3-1:214
For poured out from one Spirit upon many, it is gathered again into one harmony.
3-1:215
恩賜原有分別,需要另一樣恩賜來分辨那更美的;
And there is a diversity of gifts, requiring yet another gift for the discernment of the better;
3-1:216
since all of them have something praiseworthy.
3-1:217
"Sink them, O Lord, and divide their tongues"—
3-1:218
all but openly bringing accusation against the tongues here that cut the Godhead asunder.
3-1:219
Let this much, then, suffice on these matters.
3-1:220
But since the tongues spoke to the most devout Jews dwelling in Jerusalem—Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, Egyptians, and Libyans, Cretans and Arabs, Mesopotamians and my own Cappadocians—and to the Jews from every nation under heaven (if anyone prefers to understand it so) gathered together there, it is worth seeing who these were, and from what captivity.
3-1:221
For the captivity into Egypt and Babylon was limited in extent, and had long since been ended by the return.
3-1:222
But the captivity under the Romans had not yet come to pass, though it was destined to come, being the exaction for the insolence committed against the Saviour.
3-1:223
It remains, then, to suppose this to be the captivity under Antiochus, which was not much earlier than these times.
3-1:224
但若有人不接受這種解釋,以為太過牽強(因這被擄既不古遠,也未廣佈於普世),而尋求一種更可信的說法,或許這樣設想更好:既然這民族屢次被遷移,且是被許多征服者所遷,正如以斯拉所記載的,有些支派被帶了回來,另一些卻被留在外邦;
But if anyone does not accept this explanation as too far-fetched (since the captivity was neither ancient nor spread over much of the inhabited world), and seeks a more plausible one, perhaps it is better to suppose this: that since the nation was often removed, and by many conquerors, as is recorded by Esdras, some of the tribes were brought back, while others were left behind;
3-1:225
and it is likely that, these being scattered among many nations, some of them were present at that time and shared in the marvel.
3-1:226
And these things have been examined beforehand for the lovers of learning, perhaps not without profit.
3-1:227
And whatever else anyone may contribute to the present day, that too will have been gathered together by us.
3-1:228
But for us the assembly must now be dismissed (for the discourse has been long enough), yet the festival never.
3-1:229
倒不如說,我們該守這節——如今固然也按著身體來守,但不久之後要全然在靈裏守;
Rather, we must keep the feast—now indeed in a bodily manner too, but a little later wholly in the Spirit;
3-1:230
在那裏,我們要在那話語自己,就是神,並我們的主耶穌基督裏——祂乃是那得救之人真實的節期與歡騰——更純全、更清楚地明白這些事的意義;
there too we shall know the meaning of these things more purely and more clearly, in the Word Himself, and God, and our Lord Jesus Christ—the true festival and exultation of those who are being saved;
3-1:231
with whom be the glory and the worship to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, now and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
