1:557
At this point it is said — for this too deserves to be recorded — that that old man, yet young in his contests (for he did not abandon his cheerfulness even amid the horrors, but rather reveled in his torments), uttered that memorable and celebrated saying:
1:558
他讚許這個象徵——他看見自己被高高舉起,而他們卻卑微地伏在下方;
how he praised the symbol of it, seeing himself lifted on high, while they lay low and abased beneath him;
1:559
so far did he surpass those who had power over him, and so far was he removed from his sufferings, that he seemed to be present as a bystander at another's peril, treating the affair as a festal procession rather than a calamity.
1:560
And yet, who among even those but moderately fair-minded and humane would not have felt shame at these things? But neither the occasion nor the emperor's own impulse allowed it — an impulse that demanded inhumanity even of populaces, cities, and magistrates, even though this was not apparent to the many who did not know the depth of that man's malice.
1:561
Such was the affair of the steadfast old man, as we have received it.
1:562
And for what was this? That he might not surrender a single gold piece to his torturers.
1:563
By which it is also clear that he held out for the sake of piety.
1:564
For as long as they, having set the assessed cost of the temple at its heaviest, demanded either the whole sum in gold or ordered him to rebuild the shrine himself, it seemed that it was the impossibility of the demand, rather than the piety of his soul, that occasioned his resistance;
1:565
but when, by his endurance, he gradually wore them down, and they kept lowering the assessment, until at last it came to this, that what was demanded was quite trifling, and as easy as could be to pay;
1:566
於是雙方勢均力敵:對他們而言,得勝在於索得分毫;對他而言,不被制服則在於分文不付——儘管有許多人願意代為多繳,這不僅是出於敬虔,也是為了成全那人不可征服、不可制勝的名節;
and it was an even match: for them, victory lay in getting anything at all; for him, in not being overcome, that is, in paying nothing whatever — although many were eager to contribute even more themselves, not only out of piety, but also on account of the man's being unconquered and unconquerable;
1:567
then it was plainly shown that his struggle was waged not over money, but over piety.
1:568
Are these, then, marks of equity and gentleness, or, on the contrary, of insolence and inhumanity? Let those who admire the 'philosopher king' tell us.
1:569
For my part, I think that not one of them is at a loss for the just and true answer.
1:570
And I have not yet added that this man was one of those who had saved the accursed one himself, when his whole family stood in danger, and who spirited him away by stealth;
1:571
for which reason alone, perhaps, he justly suffered these things — indeed he deserved to suffer even more — because in saving him he was unwittingly preserving so great an evil for the whole world.
1:572
They say, indeed, that on account of this the prefect of that time — for he was a man pagan in religion, but beyond a pagan in character, comparable to the best men praised both of old and now — spoke frankly to the emperor about this, unable to bear the manifold cruelty and endurance shown toward the man:
1:573
"...tortures? And when there is no great glory in overcoming him, how can it be anything but the depth of misfortune to come away defeated in this?" And so it seems that the same deeds which put prefects to shame were the emperor's boast.
1:574
Of these things, which would prove more wretched — for those who did them, or for those who suffered them? Such, then, and in such a state were the affairs of the people of Arethusa, that the inhumanity of Echetus and Phalaris seems slight beside their cruelty — or rather, beside the cruelty of him who persuaded and contrived it.
1:575
if indeed the shoots answer to the seed, and shipwrecks to the wind that drives them.
1:576
但其餘的事,又是何等、何其之多?誰能賜我希羅多德與修昔底德的閒暇與文采,使我能將此人的邪惡傳於後世,使那個時代的種種記述得以如刻石般昭示後人?俄隆特斯河與夜間的屍身,我且略而不言;那人四面為死者所圍、暗中殺人,竟將此事連皇帝也瞞過;
But the rest — what and how many things were there? Who would grant me the leisure and the tongue of Herodotus and Thucydides, that I might hand down to future time this man's wickedness, and that the narratives of this age might be inscribed as on a pillar for those who come after? I will say nothing of the Orontes, and the corpses of the night, which this man — hemmed in, as it were, by the slain, and killing men where none could see — kept hidden even from the king;
1:577
for here it is more fitting to use the language of epic verse.
1:578
I will likewise pass over the innermost and remotest recesses of the palace, and all that lay hidden in pits and wells and trenches, teeming with wicked treasures and mysteries —
1:579
not only the bodies of boys and virgins cut open for necromancy and divination and unlawful sacrifices, but also those of men who were put in peril for the sake of piety.
1:580
若你願意,就讓我們暫且寬容這些事吧——連他自己對此也感到羞愧,至少在這一點上還有所節制;
Let us, if you will, pass over these matters, seeing that even he himself was ashamed of them — in this alone showing some measure of restraint;
1:581
這由他企圖遮掩此事便可見一斑——顯然他自認這污穢之事若公諸於世,實在不成體統;
and this is clear from his attempt to conceal them — evidently he judged it unseemly for the pollution to be made public;
1:582
至於我們該撒利亞人所遭遇的——那些氣度恢弘、對敬虔滿懷熱忱之人——竟被他如此驅逐凌辱,這事或許並無什麼值得責備之處;
as for the treatment our own Caesareans received — men magnanimous and ardent for piety — driven about and outraged by him as they were, perhaps there is nothing here worth reproaching him for;
1:583
因為,在那本應交好運的時節,「福運女神」自身竟遭逢厄運,他似乎是為她義憤填膺,才如此施以報復;
for it seemed that he, justly indignant on Fortune's behalf, because at a season of good fortune Fortune herself had suffered misfortune, had proceeded to this act of retribution;
1:584
since some allowance, after all, must be made even for injustice when it holds the upper hand.
1:585
But who does not know that, when a certain populace had run mad against the Christians, committing much slaughter and threatening still more, the governor of the province — steering a middle course between the pressure of the moment and the laws, since he felt bound to serve the one while retaining some modest shame before the other — on this account led many Christians away to death, yet reprimanded only a few of the pagans; and that afterward, summoned before the emperor and formally accused, he was tried on this very charge, in disgrace and under arrest?
1:586
他辯稱自己不過是依照所受託執掌審判的律法行事,卻幾乎因此被處以死刑;
He pleaded the laws by which he had been entrusted with the office of judging, and yet he came within a hair's breadth of being led away to death;
1:587
and in the end, having obtained "clemency," he was sentenced to exile? And how marvelous and humane a verdict that was!
1:588
"For what great matter is it," says the just judge — the one who does not persecute Christians — "if a single pagan hand has made away with ten Galileans?" Is this not manifest savagery? Is this not itself an edict of persecution, and indeed far plainer and more terrifying than those publicly posted? For what difference is there between posting up a public threat against Christians, and openly showing delight in the persecutors of Christians while treating moderation as a grave offense? For a king's mere wish is an unwritten law, championed by his power, and far mightier than written laws, which have no such authority to back them.
1:589
「不然」,那些崇拜他之作為、又為我們塑造出這位「新神」——這位「溫良仁慈之神」——的人如此說道;
"No," say those who venerate his memory, and who fashion for us this new god of theirs — the gentle, humane one;
1:590
but that he never publicly proclaimed, "Let Christians be persecuted, and let them suffer whatever their persecutors think fit" — and so they absolve him of the charge of persecution.
1:591
然而,從未有人因九頭蛇長出九個頭而非一個,便稱牠溫馴——若這神話還值得採信的話;
But no one has ever called the Hydra gentle merely because it put forth nine heads instead of one — if the myth is to be believed at all;
1:592
也未曾因帕塔拉的喀邁拉擁有三種相異形貌、因而更為可怖,便稱牠溫馴;
nor the Chimaera of Patara, because it had three different and dissimilar forms, so as to be the more terrible;
1:593
也未曾因地獄看門犬刻爾柏洛斯的諸頭雖多卻彼此相似,便稱牠溫馴;
or Cerberus in Hades, because his heads, though so many, were alike;
1:594
也未曾因海中禍害斯庫拉環生六首、最令人避之唯恐不及,便稱牠溫馴;
or that scourge of the sea, Scylla, because her six heads, ranged in a circle, were most to be shunned;
1:595
儘管,據說,她上半身姣好宜人,容貌並不令人生厭;
and yet, they say, her upper parts were fair and gentle, and not unpleasing to behold;
1:596
因為她畢竟是位少女,與我等尚有幾分同類之處;
for she was, after all, a maiden, sharing something of our own kind;
1:597
differing thus from her counterpart Charybdis.
1:598
Or will you blame the arrows of archers and the stones of slingers, but not the slingers and archers themselves? Or, further, the dogs of hunters, and the poisons of poisoners, and the horns of goring oxen and the claws of savaging beasts?
1:599
while those who wield these instruments stand clear of blame, and have no share in the guilt of what they dare to do? Such reasoning is full of gross absurdity, and truly needs a sophist — one who pleads the cause of his own crimes, and by the power of rhetoric conceals the truth —
1:600
至於他要如何將自己藏匿起來——即便千方百計、變化多端,即便戴上那所謂「哈得斯的隱身盔」,或憑藉居格斯的戒指、轉動其寶石,將自己遁形而去,也是徒然;
as for how he might hide himself — not even by twisting and turning every way and becoming all things by his devices; not even if, putting on the cap of Hades, as they call it, or making use of the ring of Gyges and the turn of its bezel, he should steal himself out of sight;
1:601
恰恰相反,他越是企圖逃遁躲避,就越發在「真理」這位審判者,以及比這些詭計更為明察之審判者面前無所遁形——因他所行所敢為之事,連他自己也無法辯稱是出於公義;
on the contrary, the more he tries to flee and escape, the more surely he is caught — before Truth as judge, and before judges more discerning than such contrivances — as one who does and dares deeds which he himself could not defend as justly done;
1:602
so easily is wickedness caught, stumbling over itself from every side.
1:603
而他當時已在施行之事,其性質竟是如此,且與帝王應有的高貴與莊嚴相去何其遙遠;
Nor was it only that what he was already doing was of this sort, and so far removed from royal nobility and magnificence;
1:604
but rather what he intended to do was — so it might seem — gentler still, and more befitting a king!
1:605
It would indeed have been a great thing, had it not been far more inhuman than what has already been told.
1:606
正如一條蛇蠕動之時,牠的鱗片有的已然聳起,有的正相繼聳起,有的即將聳起,其餘的縱然此刻仍靜止不動,卻也終究無法不隨之而動;
For just as, when a serpent stirs, of its scales some are already bristling, others bristle in turn, others are about to bristle, while the rest cannot but move as well, even though for the moment they remain still;
1:607
又或者,就如雷電擊來一般——有些事物已然被擊中,有些則正逐漸轉暗,預兆著終將被那肆虐之惡所吞噬——他也是如此:有些不法之事已在進行,另有一些則已在他的期望與對我們的威嚇之中勾勒出輪廓;
or, if you will, just as with a lightning-stroke — some things are already struck down, while others darken in advance, waiting until the ruling evil overtakes them too — so also with him: some transgressions were already being committed, while others were being sketched out in his hopes and in his threats against us;
1:608
and these plans were so outlandish, so far beyond all precedent, that it took a mind such as his alone to conceive them and to wish to carry them into effect — even though many persecutors and enemies of the Christians had arisen before him.
1:609
But he was checked by the loving-kindness of God, and by the tears of the Christians — tears shed in abundance by many, who possessed no other remedy against their persecutor;
1:610
and these plans were: that Christians should be stripped of all right to frank speech, and shut out from every assembly, market-place, public festival, and even the law-courts themselves — for no one was to be allowed to make use of these unless he first burned incense at the altars set up before them, paying so heavy a price for so vital a matter.
1:611
O laws, and lawgivers, and kings — you who, like the beauty of heaven, the light of the sun, and the expanse of the air, lie open to all in a benevolence common and unstinted, and who have likewise set forth for all free men a share in the laws, equal and equally honored!
1:612
It was of this very thing that he intended to deprive the Christians —
1:613
以致他們無論遭受何等暴虐欺壓,皆不得依法討回公道;無論被罰款勒索,或遭受任何其他大小不法侵害,皆無法得到律法的援助;
so that when they were tyrannized over they might not obtain redress at law, nor when mulcted of money, nor, suffering any other wrong, small or great, among the things forbidden, might they be helped by the laws;
1:614
反倒使他們動輒被放逐、被殺害,幾乎連呼吸的權利都被剝奪;
but that they should be liable to exile, to summary execution, and were all but denied the very breath they drew;
1:615
things which, for those who suffered them, brought all the greater honor and boldness before God, but for those who inflicted them, all the greater lawlessness and disgrace.
1:616
And how supremely wise, forsooth, was the reasoning of this murderer who posed as patron, this breaker of law who posed as lawgiver — or, to put it more fittingly, this enemy who posed as avenger, avenging, as he saw it, our own principles against us!
1:617
因為(他如此推論)我們的教訓本是:不可自衛,不可興訟,凡事皆不可擁有,也不可將任何東西視為己有;
For, he reasoned, it is a principle of our law neither to defend oneself, nor to go to law, nor to possess anything at all, nor to reckon anything as one's own;
1:618
應當藐視眼前所有之物,視若無有;
to despise the things present as though they did not exist;
1:619
不可以惡報惡——甚至根本不被容許如此行;
and not to repay evil for evil — indeed it is not even permitted;
1:620
nor, when struck on one cheek, to spare the other, but to offer that one too to the striker, and to add the tunic to the cloak already surrendered.
1:621
And perhaps he will add that we are also to pray for those who wrong us, and to wish the very best for our persecutors.
1:622
And why would he not know these things exactly, he who was once a reader of the divine oracles, and had been deemed worthy of the honor of standing at the great sanctuary, and who used to honor the martyrs with shrines and sacred precincts? 8.
1:623
關於他,我首先感到驚異的是:他既對這些經文如此熟稔,怎麼竟沒有讀到那一句話——或是故意略過不讀;
Here is the first thing I marvel at in him: how he could have grown so thoroughly familiar with these texts, and yet failed to read the following passage — or willingly passed over it;
1:624
that "the wicked shall be destroyed in wickedness" — everyone, that is, who has denied the Godhead, and, what is worse still, who thrusts aside those who persevere in their confession and surrounds them with such evils as he himself deserved to suffer.
1:625
If, then, just as our law prescribes for us to be of this character and to abide by what has been laid down, he can likewise show that the very worst has been enjoined upon him, or that such conduct is accounted a virtue among his own gods —
1:626
and that, of the two dispositions thus divided — virtue, I mean, and vice — the better portion has been allotted to us, while the worse has fallen to their lot —
1:627
就讓他這樣說吧,那麼我們便已得勝——連我們的仇敵,連迫害我們之人,都成了為我方作證的見證人;
let him say so, and we shall count ourselves victorious, with our very enemies as witnesses, and our own persecutors bearing witness to our cause;
1:628
but if they too lay claim to some measure of nobility and gentleness — in word at least, if not in deed — and are not so utterly shameless, however wicked they may be and however much they delight in wicked gods, as to assert that vice belongs to them as though it were some allotted portion —
1:629
δει.
let them show how, or on what ground, it is just that we should patiently endure even while suffering wrong, while they will not even spare those who spare them.
1:630
While times of power have indeed come to us, and yours have run their variable course, shifting now this way, now that — what such thing has ever befallen your own people at the hands of Christians, as has so often befallen Christians at your hands? Of what frank speech have we deprived you? Against whom have we roused seething mobs? What magistrates have we made serve beyond their orders? On whom have we brought peril of life? Or rather, whom have we driven from office, and from the other honors owed to the best of men? In a word, on whom have we inflicted anything such as has often been dared by you, and often threatened by you? No — not even you yourselves could say so, you who charge us with being too gentle and too humane!
1:631
那麼,你這位眾人中最有智慧、最有見識的人啊——你把基督徒逼向德行的極致——你怎會不考慮這一點:我們的律法中,有些誡命是對受命者具有約束力的,連不遵守都是危險的;
Then how do you not consider this, O wisest and most sagacious of all — you who confine Christians to the very summit of virtue — that of our legislation some precepts are binding upon those commanded, so that it is dangerous even not to keep them;
1:632
而另一些則非出於必然,而是出於自願的抉擇;
while others are not a matter of necessity, but of choice;
1:633
遵守這些的人,得著尊榮與報償;不遵守的人,卻毫無任何危險可言?因為倘若人人皆能成為至善之人,皆能登上德行的極致,那自然是最卓越、最完美的;
which, if kept, bring honour and recompense, but if not kept, bring no danger whatsoever? For if it were possible for all to be best, and to attain the very summit of virtue, this would indeed be most excellent and most perfect;
1:634
but since things divine are distinct from things human, and while some lack nothing of what is good, others attain much even if they only reach the middling measure — what do you mean by legislating things that are not meant for all, or by pronouncing condemned those who do not keep them? For just as he who does not deserve punishment is not thereby worthy of proclamation (i.e. of public honour),
1:635
同樣,不當受表彰的人,也未必就當受懲罰;
so he who is not worthy of proclamation is not thereby worthy of punishment;
1:636
but one must remain within the bounds of our philosophy and of human capacity, and require right conduct accordingly.
1:637
但我必須再次把我的言論帶回到「文詞」這個題目上;
But I must bring my discourse back again to the subject of letters;
1:638
因為我實在按捺不住,要一再重提此事,並且必須竭盡所能,為文詞辯護;
for I cannot bear not to turn over this matter again and again, and I must try, as far as I am able, to plead the cause of letters;
1:639
for though there are many terrible things for which that man deservedly incurs hatred, in nothing does he appear to have transgressed the law more than in this.
1:640
And let everyone who delights in letters and is devoted to this pursuit share my indignation — of whom I too will not deny that I am one.
1:641
〔其餘一切〕都屬於那下界的迴旋與夢幻般的逸樂;
The rest belongs to the lower orbit and to dream-like delight;
1:642
唯獨言辭之學才是我所鍾情、所執守的;
but I am possessed by discourse alone;
1:643
and I do not begrudge the toils on land and sea that procured these things for me.
1:644
那麼,願文詞的精通歸於我,也歸於一切我所親愛的人;
Let then the mastery of letters be mine, and whoever is dear to me;
1:645
which I first embraced, and still embrace, next after the First — I mean divine things, and the hopes that lie beyond what is seen.
1:646
所以,正如品達所言,人人都受自己所屬之事的驅使——我論及此事,對我而言乃是必然之舉;
So if, as Pindar says, every man is pressed hard by what is his own, my discourse on this subject is necessary for me;
1:647
and it is above all just — more so, I think, than in almost any other case — to render to letters, by means of discourse, the gratitude owed for letters.
1:648
Whence then did this occur to you, O most frivolous and most insatiable of all men, to deprive Christians of letters? For this was not among the things merely threatened, but among those already made law.
1:649
Whence, and from what cause? What eloquent Hermes, as you yourself might put it, brought this to your mind? What wicked Telchines, what envious demons? If you wish, we ourselves will set forth the cause of this too.
1:650
因為你既然著手施行許多不法的惡行,勢必終究要被引向這一步,明明白白地與自己為敵、自陷困境;
For it was necessary that you, who had undertaken many lawless evils, should at last be led on to this, and manifestly fall foul of yourself;
1:651
so that in the very thing wherein you supposed you ought most to pride yourself, in that very thing you might unwittingly disgrace yourself most, and be condemned of irrationality.
1:652
你這道諭令用意何在?你在文詞一事上標新立異,其道理何在?即便你所言似乎有理,我們也只會感到憂傷,卻不會加以指責;
What does your decree mean? And what is the reasoning behind this innovation regarding letters? Even should you seem to say something just, we shall be grieved, but we shall not find fault;
1:653
for just as we have learned to conquer by reason, so too we have learned to be nobly defeated by it.
1:654
"Ours," he says, "are letters, and Hellenizing — to which also belongs the worship of the gods;"
1:655
"but yours is irrationality and rusticity;"
1:656
"and nothing beyond 'Believe!' belongs to your wisdom."
1:657
Now I do not suppose that those among you who philosophize after Pythagoras would laugh at this — for whom "He himself said it" is the first and greatest of doctrines, and more to be chosen than the Golden Verses — or rather, I should say, the Leaden Verses.
1:658
因為在那第一項、備受頌揚的沉默哲學之後——受他祕儀啟蒙者藉沉默操練言語的分寸——據說此後若有人問及某項教義、他們發表意見時,若被要求進一步的說明,他們合法可行的回答,除了「這是畢達哥拉斯如此裁定的」之外,別無他言;
For after the first, much-celebrated philosophy of silence, among those initiated into his rites — so that by silence they might be trained in the due measure of speech — he says it was then lawful, when asked concerning some doctrine and then giving an opinion, if a further reason were demanded, to answer nothing else than that this had been so decreed by Pythagoras;
1:659
而教義的憑證,僅僅是他心中所浮現的,既無須交代,也不容查驗;
and that the proof of the doctrine was simply whatever had occurred to him, unaccountable and untested;
1:660
"He himself said it" amounting to the very same thing as our "Believe!" — in different syllables and words — even though you will not cease mocking and deriding this saying of ours.
1:661
For our doctrine means that it is not permitted to us to disbelieve what has been spoken by God-bearing men, but that their trustworthiness is itself the proof of the doctrine, stronger than any power of logical argument or counter-argument.
1:662
但即便此點,也姑且算作我們容易遭人誣衊之處吧;
But let even this too be reckoned among the things of ours that are easily open to slander;
1:663
但你要如何證明文詞特屬於你?縱然它們果真是你的,依你的立法與你的不合理性,我們何以毫無份於其中?因為就文詞而言,「希臘化」一詞究竟屬於什麼,是在何種意義上被說、被理解的呢?讓我為你分辨這個名稱的意涵——你這位精通同名異義之事的人啊——所指涉的,究竟是同一稱謂下的不同事物,還是不同稱謂下的相同事物,抑或是不同稱謂下的不同事物;
yet how will you show that letters belong especially to you? And even if they are indeed yours, how is it that we have no share in them, according to your legislation and your want of reason? For to what does "Hellenizing," as applied to letters, belong, and in what sense is the word said and understood? Let me distinguish for you the force of the term, O you who are so skilled in matters of ambiguous names — the things signified, whether different things under one appellation, or the same things under different appellations, or different things under different appellations;
1:664
for you will say it belongs either to religion, or plainly to the nation, and to those who first devised the power of the dialect.
1:665
那麼,倘若屬於宗教,請你指出,究竟在何處、在哪些祭司之間,「希臘化」是律法所規定的,就如某些獻祭之於某些鬼魔,是有律法規定的一樣;
If then it belongs to religion, show where, and among which of the priests, Hellenizing is prescribed by law, just as it is prescribed that certain sacrifices be offered to certain of the demons;
1:666
for not the same things are prescribed for all, nor all things for one, nor in the same manner, as seems fitting to your hierophants and to your technical experts in sacrifices.
1:667
Show that Hellenizing was set apart in common as belonging to some one of your gods or demons, just as many other common things have also been legislated to be sacrificed to particular deities.
1:668
But if you will not say this, and instead claim the language as your own, and on this account will banish us far from it, as from a paternal inheritance in which we have no share, then in the first place I do not see what the reasoning is, or how you will attribute this to the demons.
1:669
因為並非因為同一批人既操希臘語又奉行〔異教〕宗教,文詞便因此也屬於宗教,我們也就理當被排除在外;
For it does not follow that, because it happens that the same people both speak Greek in tongue and hold the pagan religion, letters therefore also belong to religion, and that on this account we should reasonably be excluded from them;
1:670
其實,就連你們自己的邏輯學家,也認為這是不合邏輯的推論;
but this indeed seems even to your own logicians to be an invalid inference;
1:671
因為並非兩者關乎同一事物,兩者便彼此相同;
for it does not follow that, if both pertain to the same subject, both are therefore the same as each other;
1:672
否則,倘若我們假設同一人既是金匠又是畫家,那麼冶金之業豈不就變成了繪畫之業,繪畫之業豈不就變成了冶金之業;
otherwise, if we were to suppose the same man to be both a goldsmith and a painter, goldsmithing would turn into painting, or painting into goldsmithing;
1:673
these are among the many absurdities of your position.
1:674
Next I will ask you, O great lover of Greeks and lover of letters that you are: will you exclude us from Hellenizing altogether — from these plain, ordinary words in common use — or only from what is elegant and elevated, as attainable by none but those distinguished in education? For if the latter, what is the ground for this apportionment — that words such as "dreadful" (σμερδαλέον), "to clang" (κοναβίζειν), "surely...?" (μῶν), "doubtless" (δήπουθεν), "certain things" (ἅττα), and "somehow or other" (ἀμωσγέπως) belong solely to that special dialect, while the rest are cast out to Cynosarges, as bastards once were of old? But if the plain and unadorned kind of speech likewise belongs to Hellenizing, why do you not deprive us of this too, and simply of every Greek utterance whatsoever, however it may happen to be composed? That would be more humane of you, and thoroughly in keeping with your own lack of culture.
1:675
For the matter stands thus — let me philosophize with you on this at a loftier and more perfect level:
1:676
至於究竟是否真有某些神聖的聲音,從發聲的器官發出,經由空氣流布、注入耳中,比我們的聲音更為優越、更具意義(因為我要嘲笑你們那莊嚴的「摩呂」、「珊索斯」、「哈爾基斯」等說法)——抑或〔諸神〕彼此之間是憑赤裸的概念與意象相通、全然無需言語——這並非我們所能斷言的;
Whether there are indeed certain divine voices, issuing from vocal organs, poured out through the air and flowing into the ears, superior to ours and more significant (for I laugh at your solemn "Moly," and "Xanthus," and "Chalcis") — or whether the gods communicate with one another through bare concepts and impressions, without speech at all — it is not for us to say;
1:677
but at any rate ours is of this sort:
1:678
言語並非只屬於發明它的人,而是屬於一切分享它的人;
Speech is not the possession of those who invented it alone, but of all who share in it;
1:679
無論你想到任何技藝或學問,皆無例外;
nor is any art or pursuit that you might care to think of an exception;
1:680
正如在技藝與音樂的和諧之中,一根繃緊的弦發出一種聲音,一根鬆弛的弦發出另一種聲音,然而一切都出於同一位調音的工匠,共同趨向那唯一的和諧之美;
but just as, in artistic and musical harmony, one sound comes from one string drawn taut, another from one left slack, yet all belong to the one tuner and craftsman, all together tending toward a single beauty of harmony;
1:681
so too in these matters, the Craftsman and Maker, the Logos, appointed one man to be the inventor of one pursuit or art, another of another, but set forth all things in common before all who desired to share them, binding our life together by fellowship and love of mankind, and making it gentler.
1:682
Is Hellenizing yours? Tell me:
1:683
what then? Are not the letters of the alphabet Phoenician? Or, as some say, Egyptian? Or the invention of the Hebrews, who are wiser still than these, and who believe that the Law was inscribed for them by God on tablets engraved by God's own hand? Is Atticizing yours? And playing at draughts, and counting, and reckoning on the fingers, and measures and weights, and, even before these, tactics and the arts of war — whose are they? Are they not the Euboeans', if indeed Palamedes — the inventor of many things, and for this reason envied, and moreover called to account for his wisdom, and condemned by those who campaigned against Ilium — was a Euboean? What then? If the Egyptians and Phoenicians and Hebrews, whose discoveries we make use of for our own education, and if those who possess the island of Euboea, should reclaim these things as belonging to them — following your own premises — what shall we do? Or what defense shall we offer against them, having been caught using laws not our own? Or is it altogether necessary that we be stripped of all these, and suffer the fate of the jackdaw — to be left naked and disgraced, stripped of another's borrowed feathers?
1:684
(此處原文於抄本傳統中殘缺不全。)……正當他急速追趕而過之際——據傳說如此——她便嘲弄他來勢洶洶之猛烈,說出了一句話;
(The text is defective at this point in the manuscript tradition.) ...while he pressed on swiftly in pursuit, as the story goes; then she, mocking the vehemence of his onrush, uttered a saying;
1:685
and this pleased the young man greatly, and being measured out with more elaborate craft, produced this marvelous poem of yours? What of the rest? But if you pride yourself greatly on your weapons, from whom, O most noble one, did you get your weapons? Not from the Cyclopes, from whom comes the art of forging bronze? And if the purple robe seems to you a great thing, indeed the greatest of existing things — that from which you derive your wisdom, and your lawgiving in such matters —
1:686
那麼,若這惡毒的謀劃,依照你自己所定的界限與律法而得以廢止,倒真是值得慶幸的事——如此我們便能擺脫種種困擾,也能重見羅馬帝國恢復古時的興盛,脫離一切內戰紛爭;
it would indeed have been worth much, if this wicked contrivance of yours had been dissolved, according to your own boundaries and laws, so that we might have been rid of our troubles, and it would have been possible to see the Roman empire once more in its ancient prosperity, freed from all civil strife;
1:687
which civil strife is far more to be shunned and more terrible than war from without, by just so much as it is more abhorrent to consume one's own flesh than that of strangers.
1:688
But if these things seem to you to be mere villainy dressed in smoothness, and far removed from royal magnificence, come, I will set before you things still more advantageous than these.
1:689
他眼見我們的道理,無論在教義上,或在來自上天的種種見證上,都是何等偉大——同一道理,既是古老的,又是嶄新的;
For seeing that our doctrine is great in its teachings and in the testimonies from above, being the very same doctrine, both old and new;
1:690
古老,在於其中的預言,以及神性在其間閃耀而出的種種作為;
old in its prophecies, and in the movements of the Godhead that flashed forth within them;
1:691
嶄新,在於那最終的神顯,以及由此而生、環繞其周的種種奇事;
new in its final act of divine manifestation, and in the wonders arising from it and surrounding it;
1:692
and greater still, and more manifest, in the forms of the Church that have been handed down and preserved to this day —
1:693
為要使這一切也不能倖免於他的惡毒,他到底設計了什麼、做了什麼呢?他效法亞述人拉伯沙基;
so that not even this should be left untouched by his malice, what does he contrive, and what does he do? He imitates Rabshakeh the Assyrian;
1:694
who indeed served as general to Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians.
1:695
This man, having marched against Judea, and besieging Jerusalem with a great force and army, and encamping against the city —
1:696
since he was unable to take the city by force, and nothing within it was being betrayed to him by traitors, he attempted to win over the city by gentle words spoken in its own tongue.
1:697
And it is said that the besieged, perceiving this, first refused this on the ground that they should be addressed in Syriac and not in Hebrew, having so ordered, lest perhaps, beguiled by the gentleness of his speech, they should be led into slavery.
1:698
尤利安也構思了同樣的計謀:他準備在每一座城市設立學校,設講壇、首座與次座,講授並闡釋希臘〔異教〕教義——既有規範品德的,也有涉及隱祕奧義的;
This same plan Julian too conceived: he was ready to establish schools in every city — platforms, chief seats, and lesser seats — readings and expositions of Greek (pagan) doctrines, both those that regulate character, and those pertaining to esoteric mysteries;
1:699
還有初階入教禮與正式入教禮,以及一切明顯屬於我們自身良好規制的事物;
of preliminary initiations and of full initiation, and whatever else clearly belongs to our own good order;
1:700
and further, to establish lodging-houses and hospices, houses of purification and houses for virgins, and houses of study, and philanthropy toward those in need — both every other kind of it, and that shown through letters of introduction, by which we send those in need from one nation to another.
1:701
which indeed he had come especially to admire among the things that are ours.
1:702
這位標新立異的教條家兼詭辯家,心中所盤算的正是這些事;
Such were the schemes that the new dogmatist and sophist devised;
1:703
but whether the man's undertaking, in not reaching fulfillment nor being carried into effect, was a gain for us — who were thereby the sooner rid of him and his affairs — or a gain for him, who had gotten no further than a mere dream, I do not know.
1:704
For it would have been shown which were the motions of a man, and which the mimicries of apes.
1:705
因為據說猿猴也會模仿人所設下的某些誘餌,只要巧妙地擺在牠們面前;
since these too are said to imitate certain human lures, when craftily set before them;
1:706
yet by these very things they are also caught, since the imitation of our 'wise man' was unable to attain the reality it aped.
1:707
因為色薩利的良馬、拉刻代蒙的婦人,以及飲亞雷杜莎泉水的人——我是說西西里人,正如關於他們的神諭所言——他們擁有同類中的精選,也不會超過這樣的習俗與法度之於基督徒的合宜;
For a Thessalian mare, and a Spartan woman, and the men who drink of Arethusa's spring — I mean the Sicilians, as the oracle concerning them declares — do not possess the pick of their kind any more than such customs and ordinances are most fitting for Christians;
1:708
而且這樣的事,除了那些願意追隨我們的人之外,不會有旁人想要效法;
and such as would be emulated by none other than those wishing to follow us;
1:709
since such things have prevailed not so much by human devices as by divine power and the steadfastness of time.
1:710
But there is nothing like beholding and studying, as though upon a stage, this wondrous refashioning or remolding of theirs, to see what manner of teaching they would have had, and what would have been the outcome of their assemblies —
1:711
so that, as Plato says concerning the city set forth in speech, we may see their design set in motion.
1:712
因為一切哲學既分為這兩部分,我是說默觀與實踐;
For since all philosophy is divided into these two parts, I mean contemplation and action;
1:713
其一較為高遠,卻難以測度;
and the one being loftier, yet harder to discern;
1:714
另一則較為卑近,卻更為有用;
while the other is humbler, yet more useful;
1:715
於我們而言,二者彼此相成,各得其宜;
for us, both commend themselves through one another;
1:716
因為我們使默觀作為通往彼方之事的同行旅伴,又使實踐作為登上默觀的階梯;
for we make contemplation a companion on the journey toward the things above, and action a stepping-stone to contemplation;
1:717
for it is not possible to partake of wisdom without having conducted oneself wisely.
1:718
But for them — I do not know which will seem more ridiculous or more feeble — since they do not derive the capability of their system from divine inspiration, it is like roots that float upon the water, having no fixed anchorage.
1:719
那麼,就讓我們投身到他們那「有福」的行列裡去吧,好叫我們也能與他們一同稍作嬉戲、編織神話,如同參與他們許多戲劇一般,陪他們玩上一場;
Come then, let us cast ourselves into their 'blessed' company, that we too may briefly join them in their play and myth-making, taking part in the game as in many of their dramas;
1:720
而且除了與喜樂的人同喜樂、與哀哭的人同哀哭之外,還當加上一項:也能忍耐著與說胡話的人一同胡言;
and let there be added, to rejoicing with those who rejoice and weeping with those who weep, also the enduring to trifle along with those who trifle;
1:721
for poets too know how to produce laughter amid tears.
1:722
就讓劇場預備妥當吧;
Let the theater be made ready;
1:723
抑或不知他們會吩咐我們如何稱呼他們的會所才好;
or I do not know what else they will bid us call their house of assembly;
1:724
讓首席之位,或歸於那些以白髮、年歲、以及在城邦中蒙選之職位見長者,或歸於那些以門第、名望顯赫,並以纏繞於塵世之智慧見稱、其中娛樂多過真敬虔者;
let the seats of honor be held either by those who excel in gray hairs, in age, and in the office chosen for them in the commonwealth, or by those conspicuous for birth and reputation, and for a wisdom entangled with earthly things, possessing more of pleasure than of true piety;
1:725
for this concession we shall make on their behalf.
1:726
What shall follow next? Let them themselves enroll their own presiding officers.
1:727
讓紫袍為他們增色,還有束帶,以及花冠的繁盛與美麗;
Purple robes shall adorn them, and headbands, and the bloom and beauty of garlands;
