just as, then, we too, in relation to Adam and Eve, and to that very God who was made flesh for our sake, are kindred through our humanity, and consubstantial.
1:586
For just as the unbegotten and the begotten are not the essence of God (for who would say so?), so neither are seed-conception and its absence, in any way whatsoever, the nature of humanity.
1:587
故此,偉大的神學家額我略(貴格利),並未表明救主身上之人性按本性乃異於屬我等者之另一物,縱然有人因他所言:『我等可謂,此言乃依人而擬定』而作此誤解;
The great theologian Gregory, then, gives no indication that the human [nature] in the Savior is, according to nature, one thing, while that which is ours is another — even though it has been so supposed by some, because he says: 'We might say that the statement is patterned from the man';
1:588
此言並非指涉那就救主而被理解者;
not that [statement] being understood with reference to the Savior;
1:589
蓋祂之意願,既已全然神化,故絕無絲毫與神相悖之處;
for his willing, being wholly deified, was in no way contrary to God;
1:590
as is the case with the human will, which does not always follow the divine [will], but for the most part resists and struggles against it.
1:591
蓋此[意志]確實屬乎祂本身,且被稱為屬祂者,並非因其屬乎、或出於我等本質與本性以外之另一[本性];
For it is properly his, and is called so, not as being of another [nature], or from another, besides our essence and nature;
1:592
而是因祂、且在祂裡面,按同一且單一之位格而成就者;
but as having come to be on account of him and in him, according to the same and single hypostasis;
1:593
and not enacted by itself apart, or for itself, as is the case with us.
1:594
由此,那新引入之誕生方式,革新出其自有之[種],竟以道自身為[此種],因而一併獲得:既按本性而存在,又在祂裡面按神聖之式成為位格;
Whence also the mode of generation that was newly introduced, innovating its own proper seed, had the very Word [as that seed], obtaining together both to exist naturally and to subsist divinely in him;
1:595
使我等之[本性]得以確立;
so that what is ours might be confirmed;
1:596
and what is above us might be believed —
1:597
without which there is, at all, no nature whatsoever, but only an empty phantasm — and so as to preserve the union:
1:598
此[聯合]之一面,於本性之殊異中得以保全;
the one [aspect], preserved in natural otherness;
1:599
另一面,則於位格之同一中得以彰顯;
the other, again, known in hypostatic identity;
1:600
and thus, both wisely and piously at once, to declare the whole principle of the [divine] economy, throughout, to be at once unconfused and undivided.
1:601
此[道],你若正統地宣揚祂,你必得祂照應許回報宣揚你,並蒙祂賜下屬祂自己者之享受──於此世藉盼望,於彼世則藉親身經歷;
Him, if you yourself proclaim orthodoxly, you shall have proclaiming you in return, according to the promise, and granting the enjoyment of what is his own — here, as it were, through hope; there, through actual experience;
1:602
求你懇求使我亦得分享此[福樂],蒙聖之父啊,藉你的中保之功,引我親近那呼召並拯救[世人]者;
of which enjoyment, beseech that I too may partake, O sanctified Father, bringing [me] near, through your mediation, to him who calls and saves;
1:603
並求那將與祂同、且在祂那裡得榮耀之恩賜賞予者,以此為同宗族者彼此憐憫相待之賞報;
and, as a reward for the mutual compassion of those of the same kin toward one another, [beseech] him who grants to be glorified with him and beside him;
1:604
to whom be glory and dominion, together with the all-holy Father, and his life-giving Spirit, unto the ages of ages.
1:605
駁斥那些說「當按『佔優勢』而論基督為一運作」者;
Against those who say that one must speak of one operation of Christ, according to predominance;
1:606
on the ground that, since his divine [operation] is more effective, it prevails over the human — thus, they think, one must argue [in defense of this].
1:607
首先,你們自己也承認有兩個運作;
In the first place, you yourselves also confess two operations;
1:608
But relative terms always bring in, along with themselves, their counter-distinguished correlatives as well.
1:609
Furthermore, if you speak of the operation according to predominance, as though the human [operation] were abolished through being overpowered, you thereby introduce a diminution for both.
1:610
蓋凡佔優勢者,其本身無論如何亦屬受作用之列;
For that which prevails is itself also, in every case, among the things that are acted upon;
1:611
for it too is mastered by that which is mastered.
1:612
縱然程度較輕,然無論如何仍必受制;
For even if to a lesser degree, nevertheless it is, in every case, still mastered;
1:613
just as gold, though predominating over the silver, let us say, or the bronze mixed with it —
1:614
yet is itself also mastered, even if less, evidently in proportion to the quantity that was mixed in.
1:615
駁斥那些說:「正如工具與推動者僅有一個運作,照樣,神性與人性亦僅有一個運作」者;
Against those who say: 'Just as there is one operation of the instrument and of that which moves it, so also [there is] one operation of the Godhead and of the manhood.'
1:616
若你們說此工具乃本性所有者,則依你們之說,道將與肉身同時而生,或肉身將與道同永;
If you say the instrument is natural, then, according to you, the Word will be coeval with the flesh, or the flesh co-eternal with the Word;
1:617
蓋凡使用本性所有之工具者,皆與此工具同時而存;
for everything that makes use of a natural instrument has that [instrument] as coeval with itself;
1:618
and then it will be time for us to say either that the divine nature is a creature, or that the body is uncreated.
1:619
但若你們說此工具乃技藝之工具,則你們便將其引入為無靈魂者,且獨自分立、彼此割裂;
But if you say the instrument is [an instrument] of art/craft, you thereby introduce it as inanimate, and as standing apart by itself and divided;
1:620
且非時常運作,僅在操作者認為適宜、將其持於手中操作之時方才運作;
and as not always in motion, but only whenever it seems fit to the one working [with it] to take it in hand and put it to work;
1:621
如此一來,你們終將顯明與狂悖之聶斯多留同一心思,因他將已合為基督(神)一位格、一位者之兩個本性,加以分割、離析;
and thereupon you will be shown to be of one mind with the demented Nestorius, who divides and separates the two natures of Christ, God, that came together into one hypostasis and one person;
1:622
or [you will be shown to be] disciples of the impious Apollinarius, who says that the body of Christ is without soul and without mind.
1:623
A composite operation is, in every case, [the operation] of a composite nature.
1:624
然而,凡複合之本性,其生成皆是[各部分]同時發生、且非出於己願者;
But every composite nature has an origin that is simultaneous [in its parts] and involuntary;
1:625
蓋此[本性]乃受造者,且為其自有之處所與宇宙所限定;
for it exists as created, and is circumscribed by its own place and world;
1:626
and is inclusive of many individuals.
1:627
那麼,是時候了,你們既說基督有一複合之運作,也當說基督有一複合之本性──此運作正是此本性之界定特徵──其各部分乃同時並存者;
It is time, then, for you, in saying that Christ has one composite operation, to say also that Christ has a composite nature — of which it is indeed the defining [operation] — that nature having its parts simultaneous;
1:628
並[當說]此二部分之會合乃非出於己願、且係受迫而成者;
and [say] that the coming-together of these [parts] is involuntary and compelled;
1:629
且為受造者,並為其自有之宇宙與處所所限定;
and created, and circumscribed by its own world and place;
1:630
and, finally, [say] that there is a multitude of Christs, of whom this [nature] is predicated.
1:631
If you take the saying, 'Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me' — which carries an implication of contraction — as spoken from the man, not the man conceived according to the Savior (for that one's willing was in no way opposed to God, being wholly deified), but the man as with us, on the ground that the human will does not always follow God but for the most part resists and struggles against him, as the divine Gregory says —
1:632
the following words of the prayer, that is, 'Not what I will, but let your will prevail' — what does it seem to you to be?
1:633
[Is it a sign] of contraction, or of courage?
1:634
[Is it a sign] of utmost concord, or of separation?
1:635
But that it is not a sign of resistance nor of cowardice, but rather of complete connaturality and concord, none of those who have understanding will deny.
1:636
And if it is a sign of complete connaturality and concord, from which will do you take this to proceed?
1:637
From the will as with us, or from the man conceived according to the Savior?
1:638
But if indeed from the will as with us, then the teacher's statement declaring concerning it has erred, namely:
1:639
'that the human will does not always follow the divine will, but for the most part resists and struggles against it.'
1:640
因為若它隨順,就不會抗拒;
For if it follows, it does not resist;
1:641
and if it resists, it does not follow.
1:642
但若你認為『不要照我的意思,只要照你的意思』並非出自我們這樣的意志,而是出自那按救主而理解的人,那麼你便已承認了:他人性的意志與他神聖、屬父的意志,達至極的相合;
But if you take 'Not what I will, but let your will prevail' not from the will as with us, but from the man conceived according to the Savior, then you have confessed the utmost concord of his human will with his divine and paternal will;
1:643
也承認了那位雙重者的本性乃是二重的;
and you have confessed that the nature of the twofold Christ is two;
1:644
and you have set forth the acts of willing and the operations as being according to nature,
1:645
而他在這兩者之中,都毫無任何相悖之處;
he having in neither nature any opposition whatsoever;
1:646
even while he preserved, in every respect, the natural difference of those natures out of which, and in which, and which he was, being the same according to nature.
1:647
But if, hemmed in by these arguments, you are driven to say that 'Not what I will' belongs neither to the will as with us, nor to the man conceived according to the Savior, but is applied negatively to the unoriginate godhead of the Only-Begotten,
1:648
excluding thereby the notion that he wills anything of his own apart from the Father —
1:649
then necessarily you also carry the thing willed, which is the refusal of the cup, back to that same unoriginate godhead.
1:650
因為即使你說,這否定只涉及取消他自有所願之事,卻不涉及取消所願之事本身;
For even if you say that the negation involves the removal of his willing anything of his own, it does not involve the taking away of the thing willed;
1:651
for it is not possible for the negation to be applied to both,
1:652
both to the Only-Begotten's willing something of his own apart from the Father, and to the thing willed.
1:653
Since otherwise the willing of the will common to the Father and the Son would altogether be the removal of what is willed by God, that is, of our salvation.
1:654
For this is established, by nature, as the thing willed by him.
1:655
但既然這否定不可能同時應用於兩者,那麼很清楚:若你只把它歸於他自有所願一事,好確立那共有的意志,你便不會取消所願之事,即拒絕那杯;
But if it is not possible for the negation to be applied to both, it is clear that if you refer it only to his willing something of his own, in order to establish the common will, you will not remove the thing willed, that is, the refusal of the cup;
1:656
but you will bring it to bear instead against the common and unoriginate godhead, to which you have also negatively referred the willing.
1:657
但若連設想此事都是可憎的,那麼很明顯,這裡的否定,即『不要照我的意思』,是全然排除相悖之意,而在陳明救主人性的意志與他神聖、屬父的意志之間的同性相合;
But if even to conceive of this is abominable, then clearly here the negation, that is, 'Not what I will,' wholly removing opposition, sets forth the connaturality of the Savior's human will with his divine and paternal will;
1:658
inasmuch as the Word, having been essentially united to the whole nature entire, deified it wholly by that very essential union.
1:659
Whence, as having become for our sake as we are, he said, in a manner befitting man, to God the Father:
1:660
'not mine, but let your will prevail' —
1:661
inasmuch as he himself, God by nature, also had, as man, an act of willing — the fulfilment of the paternal will —
1:662
一方面,他與父並聖靈同心悅納此意志;
on the one hand, as consenting to this together with the Father and the Spirit;
1:663
另一方面,他也因此對父順服,以至於死,且死在十字架上;
and on the other hand, as having become obedient to the Father because of it, even unto death, death on a cross;
1:664
and having himself accomplished, through the flesh, the great mystery of the dispensation toward us.
1:665
SCHOLION. That those who say that 'Not what I will' is applied negatively to the unoriginate godhead of the Only-Begotten —
1:666
照他們自己所說,意指他在父之外並無自己所願之事——如此一來,他們也必然被迫將所願之事,即拒絕那杯,歸諸那同一位無始的神性;
signifying, as they themselves say, that he wills nothing of his own apart from the Father — they are, of necessity, also compelled to carry the thing willed, which is the refusal of the cup, back to that same unoriginate godhead;
1:667
而且,既然這否定不可能同時應用於兩者——既應用於獨生子在父之外自有所願,又應用於所願之事——他們便勢必只把它歸於自有所願一事,而不歸於所願之事本身,即拒絕那杯,也就是我們的救恩;
and that, since it is not possible for the negation to be applied to both — both to the Only-Begotten's willing something of his own apart from the Father, and to the thing willed — they by all means carry it back only to the willing of something of his own, and not to the thing willed, which is the refusal of the cup, that is, our salvation;
1:668
than which what could be more absurd?
1:669
For it follows that God wills to let pass what is, by nature, established as the thing willed by him.
1:670
Since of whatever 'Not what I will' pertains to, of that also, in every case, pertains:
1:671
'Let this cup pass from me.'
1:672
O all-wise initiate, and mystagogue of mysteries,
1:673
因為你藉著這兩者神聖的交織相合,已在一切美善之事上獲致了完全;
for by the sacred interweaving of both, you have acquired perfection in all good things;
1:674
依照其中之一,你藉著成全他神聖的誡命,已全然、徹底地屬乎神;在像我這樣的人看來——我因極度貧乏,靈魂的意向沉溺於物質,在污穢情慾的膿液中打滾——你被視為已全然屬神;
according to the one, having become wholly and entirely God's through the fulfilment of his divine commandments, you are reckoned — by such as I, who, because of an extreme excess of poverty, in a soul's disposition mired in matter, wallow in the corrupting discharge of unclean passions — to be wholly united to God;
1:675
同時你也藉此,依理性為自己求得了穩固;
while at the same time, thereby, procuring for yourself, according to reason, security;
1:676
因為為了美善之事的建立與保守,再沒有甚麼比甘願的貧乏更為有力;
for nothing is stronger than voluntary poverty for the establishment and preservation of good things;
1:677
因為它是靈魂中神聖建構那不可破壞的根基,也為一切以熱忱追求美善所成就的事,成為救恩的中保;
for it stands as an unbreakable foundation of the divine edifices in the soul, and becomes the procurer of salvation for all the other things through which the good has been zealously pursued;
1:678
by leading, through effectual demonstration rather than didactic address, by way of a lofty condescension, unto greatness of virtue, those who wisely direct toward you both their mind and, likewise, their manner of life.
1:679
我是說,依照這樣的熱忱,你懷有聖靈全備的熾熱,並在你心田中得著了那火——就是那本性愛善、又愛世人的道所要投於其上的火,這火全然吞盡我們敗壞的習性與動向——你使那些因欺詐與愚昧,在物質上發狂、在言語上狂妄的人焚燒起來,無論在惡行或虛偽的言辭上,都藉著在你裡面依神聖知識與德行而不熄地燃燒著的那盞蒙福明燈之光照,駁斥他們的腐朽與虛妄;
In accordance with this zeal, I say, possessing the whole fervor of the Spirit, and having acquired in the earth of your heart that fire which the Word — by nature a lover of the good and a lover of mankind — came to cast upon it, a fire that consumes wholly our depraved habit and motion, you set aflame those who, through deceit and folly, rave madly after matter and rave madly in speech, both in base deeds and counterfeit words, refuting the rottenness and vanity of these by the display of that blessed lamp, burning unquenchably in you according to divine knowledge and virtue;
1:680
又以神聖言語那如光芒四射的光輝,溫暖那些被這陡峭、無光之處的凝凍所徹底凍僵的人;
and you warm those utterly frozen by the icy stiffness of this precipitous, lightless height, with the radiant beams of divine words;
1:681
全然驅散並消融那寒冷,將至極的畏縮轉化為至極的剛勇與力量;
wholly driving away and dissolving the chill, and transforming utmost contraction into utmost courage and strength;
1:682
and again you give light from the eternal mountains —
1:683
我是指那非物質的群山,即屬父的言語與教義,超乎一切感官所能有的知識與能力之上——你照亮那些渴慕光明的人;
I mean, the immaterial mountains of paternal words and doctrines, which have surpassed all knowledge and power of every sense — you illumine those who long for light;
1:684
又藉著那屬乎智慧的品嚐,已藉著盼望,將他們美好地映照為那本性上正是所渴慕之對象的那一位;
and by that taste which pertains to wisdom, you render them already well imaged, through hope, as that very thing which is, by its own nature, the object desired;
1:685
leading them onward, and devoutly bringing them, through experience, to a total transformation.
1:686
因為再沒有甚麼能如此映照出你神聖祭司職分之工作,勝過那融合了敬虔、不容妥協的熱忱,以及那在我們裡面既維繫又點燃此熱忱的天賦道理——它使我們預備去行、並智慧地引導我們趨向那位依本性居首者所命定之事,以致我們得以上升歸向他,並藉著聖潔的作為與美善的教義,達至完全的復原;
For nothing so images forth the work of your divine priesthood as zeal that is tempered with godly reverence and unyielding, together with the innate principle in us that both sustains and kindles it, preparing us to do, and wisely steering us toward, those things which he who is first by nature also commands — unto our ascent to him, and unto complete restoration through holy works and good doctrines;
1:687
and unto flight from, and aversion to, those things which cause us to miss this sacred ascent.
1:688
And what else so violently dissolves this, and, as it were, walls it off —
1:689
我是指那趨向於道的旅程——除了那些如今興起、與那些行走於神聖、屬父教義之王道者為敵的人,對此旅程所行那可畏的背叛之外;
I mean the journey toward the Word — except the fearful betrayal of it by those who have now sprung up against those who travel the royal road of the divine and paternal doctrines;
1:690
a betrayal that acknowledges no deviation whatsoever among those who are unhappily borne along, on either side, in the pits of confusion and the ravines of division,
1:691
nor wishes to know it in any way at all — that royal road by which, through the grace of the all-holy Spirit who wisely guides and leads by the hand, those who press on, according to their prayers, through sincere and orthodox faith, are brought to the perfect, face-to-face knowledge and initiation into the great God and Savior of all, Christ.
1:692
因為背叛,就是改變那本應屬他自己並論及他的虔敬信念,藉著採納異端者的信條與教導,將他出賣,以致毀壞那取自我們、他全聖的肉身;
For betrayal is the alteration of the pious opinion held both by him and concerning him, which, by the adoption of the confession and teaching of those of heterodox belief, sells him off, unto the destruction of his all-holy flesh taken from us;
1:693
或者不如說,以致傾覆整個救贖的計劃;
or rather, unto the overthrow of the whole dispensation;
1:694
and it is a betrayal more grievous than that which took place at the first, when the Word existed in the flesh among us, by so much as the knowledge of his godhead, and the truth concerning his humanity, have become more perfectly manifest to all —
1:695
a truth that has laid hold of the ends of the inhabited world through the loud proclamation of the holy Fathers who preach it,
1:696
即那些師傅們所教導的:聖而同質三一之中的一位,獨生子,依本性乃是完全的神,卻依意願成了完全的人,真實地從那聖潔、永貞的神之母領受了與我們同質的肉身——這肉身具有理性與心智的靈魂——並且按位格將其與自己專屬、不可分割地聯合,遂與此肉身同為一位,一如從前;
namely, the teaching of the teachers, that the One of the holy and consubstantial Trinity, the Only-Begotten Son, being perfect God according to nature, became perfect man by will, having truly assumed our consubstantial flesh from the holy Mother of God, ever-virgin, flesh ensouled rationally and intellectively, and having united it to himself hypostatically, properly, and indivisibly, exists one together with it, just as before;
1:697
yet not without composition in his hypostasis,
1:698
因為他仍舊是神,與父同質;
inasmuch as he remained God and consubstantial with the Father;
1:699
而又因成了肉身,故仍是雙重的;
and again twofold, as having become flesh;
1:700
以致他藉著本性的雙重性,得以在本質上與兩極相通、同類,並保存那彼此各自本有部分依本性而有的差異;
so that, by the twofold character of his nature, he might be akin in essence to both extremes, and might preserve the natural difference of the proper parts in relation to one another;
1:701
By the uniqueness of his person, while he possesses complete identity in respect of the parts, he also possesses, as one and only, a personal difference in relation to the extremes.
1:702
and, by the undiminished natural and essential invariance in relation to them (I mean the extremes), he is perfect in respect of each of the two.
1:703
the same being at once God and man.
1:704
Those who impiously teach the diminution of what naturally belongs to him introduce him as imperfect, and as having suffered the loss of what is according to nature.
1:705
因為,若他不能毫無缺損地保守每一本性的特性──依諸聖教父所言,唯獨罪除外──即那成肉身之道所出自並確實在其中存在的諸本性,即使在聯合之後亦然,那麼神就成了有缺陷的了;
For if — apart from sin alone, according to the divine Fathers — he does not preserve without deficiency the property of each of the natures out of which and in which the incarnate Word properly exists, even after the union, then God exists deficient;
1:706
if indeed, being wholly man, he has acquired a diminution of the natural properties.
1:707
One must not, therefore, under the pretext of a union that in truth harms nothing but only binds the realities together into one according to hypostasis, corrupt their existence by the removal of the natural will and the essential operation.
1:708
因為,若我們彷彿是由部分構成整體那樣,藉由組合將那兩個本質的意志與數目相等的本性運作熔合為一意志、一運作,這樣的事乃屬荒誕,且將被證明是與他和父並與我們之間的相通全然疏遠、格格不入的;
For whether we should melt down and fuse together, as though composing a whole out of parts, the two essential wills and the equally numbered natural operations into one will and one operation, such a thing is mythical, and will be shown to be wholly foreign and alien to his communion with the Father and with us;
1:709
since that one [the Father] does not have, according to nature, a composite will or operation.
1:710
For composition belongs to none of the things that exist in a subject,
1:711
because their existence is not contemplated at all in itself, apart from the underlying essence.
1:712
For besides being graceless and utterly contemptible, [this view amounts to] those who hold it further confessing that he is divided and cut in half, upward and downward, on account of his natural kinship with both extremes—
1:713
and this in the case of the union according to hypostasis, which is indivisible.
1:714
Or again, if we should preserve unimpaired, for the divine nature of the incarnate Word, both the natural will and the essentially inherent operation, but should take these away and strip them from the human essence in him,
1:715
then in this way we damage the union that transcends nature, which would have nothing left to bind it into one hypostasis, since the rationally and intellectually ensouled flesh — that is, the essence and nature like ours — would not exist in the Word at all, complete and preserved.
1:716
For where, and what nature is it, that has suffered the loss of what belongs to it according to nature?
1:717
所以,若主在肉身上,於這些本性特性或其中任何一項有所欠缺,那麼他就根本不是肉身、也不是人了;
If, then, the Lord was deficient according to the flesh in these things, or in any one of these natural properties, he did not exist as flesh at all, nor as man;
1:718
因為,說這話的人若非能指出一個本性上沒有這些特性的人,就當承認他根本不是人;
for let those who assert this either show a man existing by nature apart from these properties, or [concede that] he is not man at all;
1:719
or, if such a man does not exist at all, it is clear that the incarnate Word did not become man while deprived, according to nature, of these properties or of any one of them.
1:720
For how, and by what principle, could this be, since the nature has no deficiency in such things?
1:721
而是別的什麼東西,是與我們的本質全然陌生且不可知的;
but rather it is something else, altogether foreign to our essence, and unknown;
1:722
要嘛它從起初便與他共具本質,並隨那從上而降者一同降下──那顯然正是他被稱為所已成為的那個東西;
either it was co-essentiated with him from the beginning, and descended together with him who came down from above — that being clearly the very thing he is said to have become;
1:723
then what benefit is the descent to us any longer, since we in no way come together with him through the holy flesh that was assumed not from us, though united according to hypostasis?
1:724
因為〔那肉身〕便不是我們這族類的初熟果子,不能藉恩典使那團麵〔全人類〕合而為一,也不能使其脫離那因老亞當之過犯而生的一切分裂之事;
since [that flesh] would not be the firstfruits of our race, uniting the lump by grace and releasing it from all the divisive things of which the transgression of the old Adam has become the cause;
1:725
on account of which death was also passed as sentence upon nature.
1:726
Why, then, do they begrudge us perfect salvation and confession?
1:727
Why do they draw out against us their supposedly inescapable syllogisms, asserting that the wills follow upon the operations, and that opposition in turn follows upon these — from which they also bring in [the notion of] those who will contrary things?
1:728
But, to leave aside setting straight their arguments,
1:729
whence, and how, do they contrive such sophistries?
1:730
I should like only to inquire and learn this: whether they themselves, in doing such things and enacting the new Ekthesis, did this unwillingly — and who it was that applied the force.
1:731
Then, after the act — the will not existing at all beforehand — did they acquire afterward a will for what had been done? Whence, and from what source, did it come?
1:732
And who was it that compelled them to hold the will for what had been done, so that the deed was performed against their willing, and what was done was accepted against their wish?
1:733
And again, how — if the incarnate Word himself did not, as man, naturally will and perform the things according to nature — did he willingly admit hunger and thirst, pain, toil, sleep, and all the rest?
1:734
因為並非單單作為道,他才按本性意願並施行這些事,因為他與父及聖靈共有那超乎本質、超乎無限的本性;
For it was not as Logos alone that he willed or performed these things according to nature, possessing as he does, together with the Father and the Spirit, a nature that is supra-essential and supra-infinite;
1:735
even though, again, as God, in his sovereign authority, he would give to the nature, whenever he willed, the occasion to perform what belonged to it,
1:736
just as the divine teacher of the Nyssenes, the great Gregory, says.
1:737
因為,若同一位僅僅作為神、而非作為人來意願這些事,那麼神性要嘛本性上就是一個身體,要嘛就是本質發生了轉變,因脫離自身的神性而墮落成了肉身;
For if he, the same one, willed these things only as God, and not as man, then either the divine is by nature a body, or, having been changed in essence, it became flesh through a falling away from its own divinity;
1:738
或者,屬於他的〔肉身〕在各方面既是理性的、又是非理性的;
or else, [the flesh] pertaining to him is, in every respect, at once rational and irrational;
1:739
或者,若它確實是被賦予理性之魂的,那麼屬於他的肉身便是未被賦予魂的;
or if indeed it was ensouled rationally, then the flesh pertaining to him was not ensouled;
1:740
而是徹頭徹尾無魂且無理性的;
but it was, throughout, soulless and irrational;
1:741
or if indeed it was ensouled rationally, it also possessed the natural will.
1:742
For everything that is rational by nature is also, altogether, possessed of will by nature.
1:743
And if he had a natural will as man, he willed, altogether according to essence, those very things which he himself, as God, having created it for its constitution, implanted naturally in the nature.
1:744
For he did not come to falsify the nature which he himself, as God and Word, had made,
1:745
but he came entirely to deify the nature which, willing it for himself, by the good pleasure of the Father and the cooperation of the Spirit, he united to the same and one hypostasis, together with all that naturally belongs to it, apart from sin.
1:746
Therefore, as God by nature, he willed the divine and paternal things that are according to nature.
1:747
因為他是與其生身之父〔那位生成者〕同願的;
For he was a co-willer with his own Begetter;
1:748
and, again, as man by nature, that same one willed the things that are according to human nature,
1:749
keeping the economy pure of all mere semblance, in no way opposing the will of the Father.
1:750
因為本性之事沒有一樣,正如本性本身也絕不會,去牴觸本性的成因;
For none of the natural things, just as nature itself never does at all, would ever oppose the cause of nature;
1:751
nor indeed does the gnomic will, and whatever belongs to it, [oppose it], whenever it inclines in accord with the principle of nature.
1:752
For even if someone should chance to say that something belonging to nature opposes God, the fault lies rather with him [the agent] than with nature,
1:753
he having implanted, as though naturally, war among beings, unto rebellion and strife against him and against one another.
1:754
因為,凡本性之事並無一樣與神相對立,這是顯而易見的,因這些事乃是他在〔我們〕受生之時所造的,他對這些事在我們裡面本質上的構成,並不負任何責任;
For that nothing natural is opposed to God is clear from the fact that these things were created by him at [our] generation, and he bears no blame for their essential constitution in us;
1:755
but, quite the contrary, it is clear that we incur the charges on account of the perversion of these things.
1:756
因為依循這〔悖離〕,我們便按意念〔抉擇的意向〕效法那古老的惡蛇,成了各樣邪惡之人;
For according to this [perversion], we become, by our gnomic inclination, [partakers] of every evil, after the pattern of the ancient evil serpent;
1:757
but according to that [nature], we exist by nature as God's handiwork and an honored creature.
1:758
We effect this altogether in respect of the same and one incarnate God the Word:
1:759
正統地相信他在各方面都是完全的──同一位既是神又是人──因為他完全地、本性地擁有神性之事與人性之事,並且意願且運作〔這兩者〕;
believing in orthodox fashion that he is, in all respects, perfect — the same one being at once God and man — from the fact that he possesses perfectly, and naturally, both the divine and the human, and both wills and operates [them];
1:760
並且他確實兼具神性的與人性的本質、意願及運作;
and that he properly possesses both a divine and a human essence, and will, and operation;
1:761
so that we may not, through a deficiency concerning either of the natural properties, wrongly assert the diminution — or rather, the [denial of] perfect existence — of each of the natures out of which and in which he exists.
1:762
That he possessed a will according to human nature, just as also, according to essence, a divine [will], the Word himself demonstrates plainly through the human-befitting refusal of death which he made, in the economy, for our sake — according to which he said:
1:763
"Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me;"
1:764
為要顯明他自己肉身的軟弱;
that he might show the weakness of his own flesh;
1:765
也顯明他並非藉著幻象、矇騙觀者的感官,而被人認出是肉身;
and that it was not by mere semblance that he was recognized as flesh by those who beheld him, deceiving their perception;
1:766
but he was truly and properly man, as the natural act of willing testifies to this — the very will whose refusal [of death], in the economy, took place.
1:767
And that he was, again, wholly deified — inclining toward the divine will itself, being ever moved and formed from it and in accordance with it — is clear from the fact that he made a perfect decision in favor of the Father's will alone, according to which, as man, he said:
1:768
"Not mine, but let your will be done;"
1:769
giving himself to us, in this too, as a type and example for the setting aside of our own will, for the sake of the perfect fulfillment of the divine will, even should we for this see death impending [over us].
1:770
For if it were not the case that, having become man by nature, and possessing a natural — that is, human — will, and bending this will in accordance with the economy, and impelling it toward union with the will of the Father, he said to the Father himself:
1:771
'Let not my will come to pass, but thine;'
1:772
顯然,他是作為本性上的神而說這話的;
it is clear that he said this as being God by nature;
1:773
由此,他便顯明自己並非擁有與父相同、相等的意志,而是擁有另一個、本性上有別的意志;
and from this, then, he showed himself as not possessing the same and equal will as the Father, but another, differing according to nature;
1:774
他更使這意志順服,只求成就那屬父的意志;
which will he also subjected, asking that only the paternal [will] should come to pass;
1:775
而若他擁有異於父之本性意志的另一意志,顯然他也具有相異的本質;
and if he possessed a will other than the Father's natural will, it is clear that he also had a differing essence;
1:776
因為按照至聰慧的區利羅所言,一個本質也就只有一個意志;
for of one essence there is indeed also but one will, according to the most wise Cyril;
1:777
或者,他作為人擁有本性的意志,且為了我們的緣故,按照救恩安排,雖情願受死,仍祈求得免;
for either he had, as man, a natural will, and for our sake, in accordance with the economy, was entreating to be excused, though willing death;
1:778
又藉著與父的意志完全合一的意向,再度奮起抵抗死亡;
and again he was impelled against it [death] through his perfect concurrence with the paternal will;
1:779
或者,他身為人並無本性的意志,而是身為本性上的神,將肉身的種種苦難承受入自己的本質——那本質本性上畏縮於死亡,且按本質,在與父的關係上擁有另一個本性的意志;
or, not having, as man, a natural will, he, as God by nature, suffered the sufferings of the body into his own essence — an essence naturally shrinking from death, and possessing, in relation to the Father, another natural will according to essence;
1:780
他也藉著禱告尋求並懇求這事不要發生;
which he also sought and entreated, through prayer, not to come to pass;
1:781
And what God, fearing death according to the nature of the flesh, and for this reason entreating that the cup pass, [would] also possess a natural will other than the Father's?
1:782
因此,讓我們從我們的靈魂中除去這種荒謬之見,持守諸教父虔敬的信仰告白;
Casting off, then, this absurdity from our souls, let us hold fast to the pious confession of the Fathers;
1:783
and when he says, 'Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me,' as the great Athanasius says in his discourse On His Incarnation and the Trinity —
1:784
'nevertheless, let not my will come to pass, but thine;'
1:785
'the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak' —
1:786
我們理解他在此顯明了兩個意志;
we understand that here he shows two wills;
1:787
因為那人性的意志,因肉體的軟弱而拒絕受苦;
for the human [will], because of the weakness of the flesh, declines the suffering;
1:788
but his divine [will] is ready.
1:789
In keeping with this, the great theologian Gregory also clearly teaches, in his second discourse On the Son, saying:
1:790
'For his willing is in nothing opposed [to God], being wholly deified.'
1:791
因此,按這位神聖的教師所言,他有人性的意願;
So then, according to this divine teacher, he had a human willing;
1:792
然而絕不以任何方式與神相違逆;
yet in no way whatsoever opposed to God;
1:793
而是常常被他按本質所具有的神性所塑造、推動,趨向成就救恩安排;
it happened to be always shaped and moved by his own divinity according to essence, toward the fulfillment of the economy;
1:794
且藉著與父的意志之合意及同稟本性,整個徹底被神化,並藉聯合而在真義上(而非按本性)成為神聖,且真實地成為並被稱為如此;
and being wholly and entirely deified by concurrence and connaturality with the paternal [will], and being divine properly by union, but not by nature, both truly becoming and being called [so];
1:795
in no way, by being deified, departing from what is according to nature.
1:796
因此,這位教師藉著說『整個被神化』,闡明了屬他自己的人性意志與其神性及屬父的意志之間的聯合,從而完全驅逐了一切對立,以及那些意願相反之事者,使其遠離基督的奧秘;
By saying, then, 'wholly deified,' the teacher, having set forth the union of the human will that is according to him with his divine and paternal [will], completely banished every opposition, and those who will contrary things, from the mystery concerning Christ;
1:797
and by saying, 'for his willing,' demonstrating both the innate movement of the human will that is according to him, and the essential and natural difference [it has] in relation to his divine and paternal [will], he entirely removed the confusion together with the phantasy [Docetism].
1:798
For knowing that this [confusion], and the division equal to it in impiety, war against the principle of the economy, this divine Father, and the holy teachers of the Catholic Church who follow him, proclaimed with a loud voice both the difference and the union, each according to its own [principle]:
1:799
the one [difference] being really and completely preserved in the principle of nature; the other [union], again, being firmly and hypostatically preserved in the mode of the economy — for the confirmation that, in the one and only Christ who is God, according to the indivisible union, the realities that exist essentially, together with all the natural properties belonging to them, [are preserved].
1:800
因為正如眾教父曾將另一與另一——我是說神性與人性——即在同一位獨一者身上的雙重本性,立為教義;
For just as all [the Fathers] taught as dogma one and another nature — I mean the divine and the human — a twofold nature in the same and one [Christ],
1:801
同樣,他們也高聲向眾人宣告了另一與另一意志——我是說神性的與人性的——即兩個意志;
so also, with piercing voice, they proclaimed to all one and another will — I mean the divine and the human — and two wills;
1:802
以及另一與另一運作,即神性的與人性的;
and one and another operation, both divine and human;
1:803
and again a twofold operation, that is, two.
1:804
For thus they also plainly declared the numerical signification of the essences.
1:805
因為同一位,既顯現為人,又本性上是神,卻情願藉救恩安排使杯離去;
For the same one appears, as man — while being by nature God — willing, in accordance with the economy, that the cup should pass;
1:806
並在此範圍內預表了屬我們的〔情狀〕,正如智者區利羅所教導我們的;
and to this extent typifying what is ours, as the wise Cyril has taught us;
1:807
so that he might drive away every shrinking from death belonging to our nature, and might steel and rouse it manfully toward an impulse against death.
1:808
他又顯現為神——雖然按本質也是人——願以合乎父的方式成就救恩安排,並成就我們眾人的救恩;
And again he appears as God — though being man according to essence — willing to fulfill the economy in a manner befitting the Father, and to work the salvation of us all;
1:809
他也被顯明為人——雖本性是神——卻以人性方式運作,並為我們的緣故甘願承受苦難的經歷;
and he is also shown as man — though being by nature God — operating humanly, and voluntarily receiving the experience of the sufferings for our sake;
1:810
他又被顯明為神——雖本性上是人——卻以神性方式運作,並依其本性彰顯神蹟;
and again he is shown as God — though being by nature man — operating divinely, and putting forth the divine signs in a manner befitting his nature;
1:811
from which it was made known that the same one was both God and man together, possessing wills and operations naturally equal in number to the essences out of which and in which he existed, for the confirmation of the perfect existence of those things which he properly was.
1:812
因為『神人性的』〔運作〕一詞,是這位教師以恰當的措辭所表述的,顯然是以迂迴的方式,表示那雙重本性的雙重運作;
For the 'theandric' [operation], expressed by the teacher in a fitting term, evidently signifies, by way of periphrasis, the twofold operation of the twofold nature;
