1:651
The demons, as when, watching for an opportune time in our negligence, they suddenly assail us with great vehemence, stirring up the aforementioned passions and the like.
1:652
And evil resolve, as when, knowing the good, we deliberately choose the evil instead.
1:653
(34) 德行勞苦的賞賜,乃是無情慾與知識;
(34) The rewards of the labours of virtue are dispassion and knowledge;
1:654
for these become procurers of the kingdom of heaven, just as the passions and ignorance become procurers of eternal punishment.
1:655
He, therefore, who seeks these for the sake of men's esteem and not for the good itself, hears from the Scripture:
1:656
"You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss."
1:657
(35) 有許多事按本性是善的,也是人所行的,卻又因著某種動機而不再是善的;
(35) There are many things that are by nature good and are done by men, yet are not good again on account of some motive;
1:658
for instance, fasting and vigil, prayer and psalmody, almsgiving and hospitality are by nature good works, but when they are done for the sake of vainglory, they are no longer good.
1:659
(36) In all that is done by us, God seeks the purpose, whether we do it for His sake or for some other reason.
1:660
(37) When you hear the Scripture saying:
1:661
For You will render to each according to his works.
1:662
God does not reward as good the things done apart from a right intention, even if they appear to be good, but rather the things done according to a right intention.
1:663
For God's judgment looks not at what is done, but at the intention behind what is done.
1:664
(38) 驕傲的魔鬼有雙重的惡毒;
(38) The demon of pride has a twofold malice;
1:665
for it either persuades the monk to attribute his achievements to himself and not to God, who is both the giver of good things and the helper toward their accomplishment; or, if it cannot persuade him in this, it incites him to despise the brethren who are still less perfect.
1:666
And the one thus driven does not realize that it is persuading him to deny God's help.
1:667
因為他若輕視別人不能成就善行,就分明把自己抬舉為憑己力成就的人;
For if he despises those others as unable to achieve, he plainly presents himself as having achieved by his own power;
1:668
which is impossible, since the Lord has said:
1:669
Without Me you can do nothing.
1:670
For our weakness, when moved toward good things, cannot bring them to completion without the giver of good things.
1:671
(39) He who has come to know the weakness of human nature has gained experience of the divine power; and such a one, having achieved some things through it and eagerly striving to achieve others, never despises any human being.
1:672
因為他知道,正如神曾幫助他,使他脫離許多兇惡的情慾,照樣,神也能在祂願意的時候幫助眾人,尤其是那些為祂的緣故而奮鬥的人;
For he knows that, just as God helped him and freed him from many grievous passions, so too He is able to help everyone when He wills, and especially those who struggle for His sake;
1:673
and even if, by certain judgments, He does not deliver all from their passions at once, yet in their proper seasons, like a good and loving physician, He heals each of those who strive.
1:674
(40) Pride supervenes upon the inactivity of the passions, either because their causes have been cut off, or because the demons have craftily withdrawn.
1:675
(41) Almost every sin comes about through pleasure, and its removal comes through hardship and grief, whether voluntary or involuntary—through repentance, or through a corrective affliction brought upon us by divine providence.
1:676
我們若是先分辨自己,就不至於受審判;
For if we judged ourselves, we would not be judged;
1:677
but when we are judged by the Lord, we are chastened, that we may not be condemned with the world.
1:678
(42) 當試煉出乎意料臨到你時,不要怪罪那作媒介的人,乃要追究『為何如此』的緣由,你就必尋得改正之道;
(42) When a temptation comes upon you unexpectedly, do not blame the one through whom it came, but seek out the reason why, and you will find correction;
1:679
since whether through him or through another, you were bound in any case to drink the wormwood of God's judgments.
1:680
(43) However ill-disposed you are, do not refuse hardship, so that through it you may be humbled and vomit out your pride.
1:681
(44) 有些試煉給人帶來快樂;
(44) Some temptations bring pleasures to men;
1:682
others bring bodily pains.
1:683
For according to the cause of the passions lodged in the soul, the Physician of souls applies the remedy through His judgments.
1:684
(45) 試煉的臨到,在有些人是為除去已犯的罪,在另一些人是為除去正在犯的罪,在別些人則是為攔阻將要犯的罪;
(45) The onsets of temptations come upon some for the removal of sins already committed, upon others for the removal of sins now being committed, and upon yet others for the checking of sins about to be committed;
1:685
apart from those that come for testing, as in the case of Job.
1:686
(46) The prudent man, reckoning the healing wrought by the divine judgments, bears thankfully the calamities that befall him through them, accounting no one else the cause of them but his own sins.
1:687
But the fool, ignorant of God's most wise providence, when he sins and is chastened, reckons either God or men to be the cause of his own evils.
1:688
(47) 有些事物能在情慾發動時加以制止,不容它們增長;另有些事物則能削弱情慾,使之減退;
(47) There are some things that arrest the passions in their movement and do not let them advance to growth, and there are others that diminish them and lead them toward reduction;
1:689
例如禁食、勞苦與儆醒,能不容情慾增長;
for instance, fasting, toil, and vigil do not let desire grow;
1:690
while withdrawal, contemplation, prayer, and yearning for God diminish it and lead it to extinction.
1:691
在怒氣方面也是如此;
And likewise with anger;
1:692
例如恆久忍耐、不記人惡與溫柔,能制止怒氣,不容它增長;
for instance, long-suffering, the bearing of no grudge, and gentleness arrest it and do not let it grow;
1:693
while love, almsgiving, kindness, and benevolence lead it to reduction.
1:694
(48) He whose intellect is wholly directed toward God—his desire too is intensified into divine yearning, and his whole incensive power is transformed into divine love.
1:695
For by long participation in the divine illumination he has become wholly luminous, and having bound his passible part tightly to himself, he has turned it, as has been said, into an unspeakable divine yearning and an unceasing love, having wholly transferred himself from earthly things to the divine.
1:696
(49) 一個人即使不嫉妒、不發怒、不向使他憂傷的人懷恨,也未必就已經對那人存著愛;
(49) Not in every case does the one who does not envy, nor grow angry, nor bear a grudge against the one who has grieved him, thereby already also have love toward him;
1:697
因為他雖不以惡報惡,卻仍未必甘心樂意地以善相待;
for he may, though without rendering evil for evil, still not of his own accord render good;
1:698
for to do good from inward disposition to those who hate one belongs to perfect spiritual love alone.
1:699
(50) 不愛某人的,未必就已經並且總是恨他;反之,不恨某人的,也未必就已經並且總是愛他;
(50) Neither does the one who does not love someone thereby already and in every case also hate him, nor again does the one who does not hate thereby already and in every case also love;
1:700
but he may stand as it were midway toward him, that is, neither loving nor hating.
1:701
For the loving disposition only the five ways mentioned in the ninth chapter of this century are naturally fitted to produce: the praiseworthy, the intermediate, and the blameworthy ones.
1:702
(51) 當你看見自己的心智樂於專注在物質之物上,並流連於對這些事物的思念時,就當知道你愛這些過於愛神;
(51) When you see your intellect dwelling with pleasure upon material things and lingering fondly over thoughts of them, know that you love these more than God;
1:703
for where your treasure is, says the Lord, there will your heart be also.
1:704
(52) 心智藉著禱告與愛與神聯合並常住在祂裏面,就變得有智慧、良善、有能力、愛人、有憐憫、能恆久忍耐;
(52) An intellect joined to God and abiding in Him through prayer and love becomes wise, good, powerful, loving toward mankind, merciful, and long-suffering;
1:705
and, to put it simply, it bears within itself almost all the divine attributes.
1:706
But withdrawing from Him and turning toward material things, it becomes either brutish, having grown pleasure-loving, or bestial, fighting with men on account of these things.
1:707
(53) Scripture calls material things 'the world,' and worldly are those who busy their intellect with them, to whom it also says reproachfully:
1:708
不要愛世界和世界上的事;
Do not love the world, nor the things that are in the world;
1:709
the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the pride of life are not of God, but are of the world, and so forth.
1:710
(54) A monk is one who has separated his intellect from material things and, through self-control, love, psalmody, and prayer, cleaves steadfastly to God.
1:711
(55) 從屬靈的意義說,實行德行的人乃是牧養牲畜的人;
(55) In the spiritual sense, the man of practical philosophy is a herdsman of cattle;
1:712
for moral achievements hold the place of cattle, wherefore Jacob also said:
1:713
Your servants are keepers of cattle.
1:714
那有知識的人,則是牧養羊群的人;
But the man of knowledge is a shepherd of sheep;
1:715
for the thoughts hold the place of sheep, being shepherded by the intellect upon the mountains of contemplation; for this reason it is also said:
1:716
Every shepherd of sheep is an abomination to the Egyptians—that is, to the opposing powers.
1:717
(56) 卑劣的心智,當身體藉著感官被牽動向著自己的私慾與逸樂時,便隨從並順服身體的幻想與衝動;
(56) The base intellect, when the body is moved through the senses toward its own desires and pleasures, follows after and consents to its fantasies and impulses;
1:718
but the virtuous intellect exercises self-control and restrains the body from passionate fantasies and impulses, and rather strives by spiritual discipline to make such movements of his better.
1:719
(57) Of the virtues, some are bodily and some are of the soul.
1:720
And bodily ones are such as fasting, vigil, sleeping on the ground, service, and manual labor—so as not to be a burden to anyone, or for the sake of giving to others, and so forth.
1:721
The virtues of the soul are such as these: love, longsuffering, gentleness, self-control, prayer, and the like.
1:722
If, then, from some necessity or bodily circumstance—such as illness or something of the kind—it happens that we are unable to fulfill the aforementioned bodily virtues, we have pardon from Him who also knows the causes.
1:723
But if we fail to fulfill the virtues of the soul, we shall have no excuse whatsoever.
1:724
(58) Love for God persuades the one who partakes of it to despise all passing pleasure and every toil and grief.
1:725
And let all the saints persuade you of this—they who suffered so much for Christ's sake with joy.
1:726
(59) Guard yourself against self-love, the mother of vices, which is the irrational love of the body.
1:727
For from it is begotten the whole catalogue of vices.
1:728
For when this is destroyed, all that springs from it is destroyed along with it.
1:729
(60) The passion of self-love suggests to the monk that he should have pity on the body and partake of food beyond what is fitting—ostensibly for the sake of stewardship and proper management—so that, being little by little drawn aside, he may fall into the pit of love of pleasure.
1:730
But to the worldly person it suggests that he should henceforth make provision for desire.
1:731
(61) They say that the highest state of prayer is this:
1:732
that the intellect becomes outside the flesh and the world, wholly immaterial and formless, in the act of praying.
1:733
He, therefore, who preserves this state unimpaired truly prays without ceasing.
1:734
(62) Just as the body, in dying, is separated from all the affairs of the world, so too the intellect, in praying at the highest level, dies and is separated from all the thoughts of the world.
1:735
For unless it dies such a death, it cannot be found with God and live.
1:736
(63) Let no one deceive you, monk, that it is possible for you to be saved while serving pleasure and vainglory.
1:737
(64)正如身體藉著外物犯罪,並以屬身體的德行為管教的方法,好叫它持守節制;
(64) Just as the body sins through things and possesses the bodily virtues as a means of discipline, so that it may be temperate;
1:738
so too the intellect sins through impassioned thoughts and likewise possesses the virtues of the soul as a means of discipline, so that, beholding things purely and dispassionately, it may be temperate.
1:739
(65)正如黑夜接續白晝、寒冬接續炎夏;
(65) Just as nights succeed days and winters succeed summers;
1:740
so do griefs and pains follow vainglory and pleasure, whether in the present or in the age to come.
1:741
(66) It is not possible for one who has sinned to escape the coming judgment apart from voluntary hardships here or involuntary afflictions.
1:742
他們說,頭一個緣由是這樣:好叫我們在被攻擊又反擊之中,得以分辨德行與罪惡;
And they say the first reason is this: that, being warred against and warring back, we may come to discernment of virtue and vice;
1:743
第二,好叫我們藉著爭戰與勞苦得著德行,便能將它持守得堅固不動搖;
the second, that, acquiring virtue through warfare and toil, we may hold it firm and unshakable;
1:744
第三,好叫我們在德行上長進時不致心高氣傲,反倒學習存謙卑的心;
the third, that, advancing in virtue, we may not become high-minded, but may learn to be humble-minded;
1:745
第四,好叫我們既已嘗過罪惡,便以完全的恨惡來恨它;
the fourth, that, having had experience of vice, we may hate it with perfect hatred;
1:746
and the fifth, above all, that, having become dispassionate, we may forget neither our own weakness nor the power of Him who helped us.
1:747
(68)正如飢餓之人的心智浮想麵包、口渴之人的心智浮想清水,照樣,貪食之人的心智便浮想各樣佳餚;
(68) Just as the intellect of the hungry man imagines bread, and that of the thirsty man water, so too that of the glutton imagines a variety of dishes;
1:748
愛享樂之人浮想婦女的形像;
and that of the pleasure-lover, the forms of women;
1:749
愛虛榮之人浮想從人而來的尊榮;
and that of the vainglorious, the honors that come from men;
1:750
貪財之人浮想利益;
and that of the avaricious, gains;
1:751
懷恨之人浮想向那使他憂傷者報復;
and that of the resentful, revenge upon the one who grieved him;
1:752
and that of the envious, harm to the one he envies; and similarly with the other passions.
1:753
For the intellect, harassed by the passions, receives impassioned thoughts, both when the body is awake and during sleep.
1:754
(69)當情慾增長時,心智便在睡夢中浮想那些能引發歡愉之物;
(69) When desire grows strong, the intellect imagines in sleep the materials that produce pleasures;
1:755
and when anger grows strong, it sees things that produce fears.
1:756
污穢的鬼魔助長諸情慾,把我們的疏懶當作幫凶,並煽動這些情慾;
The unclean demons increase the passions, taking our negligence as their accomplice and provoking these passions;
1:757
but the holy angels diminish them, stirring us toward the practice of the virtues.
1:758
(70)靈魂中那有情慾的部分若屢屢受激動,便在靈魂裡植入一種難以挪除的愛享樂習性;
(70) The desiring part of the soul, when frequently provoked, instills in the soul a habit of love of pleasure hard to dislodge;
1:759
and the incensive part, continually agitated, renders the intellect timid and unmanly.
1:760
前者藉著加強禁食、儆醒與禱告的苦行得醫治;
The former is healed by intensified asceticism of fasting, vigil, and prayer;
1:761
the latter by kindness, philanthropy, love, and mercy.
1:762
(71)鬼魔爭戰,或藉著外物,或藉著附著於外物之上帶情慾的意念;
(71) The demons make war either through things or through the impassioned thoughts attached to things;
1:763
through things they war against those who are engaged in things, and through thoughts against those who are separated from things.
1:764
(72) By as much as it is easier to sin in thought than in act, by so much heavier is the warfare through thoughts than that through things.
1:765
(73) Things are outside the intellect, but the thoughts of them are formed within.
1:766
所以,善用或誤用這些,全在乎心智自己;
It rests, then, with the intellect itself to use these well or ill;
1:767
for upon a mistaken use of the thoughts there follows a misuse of the things.
1:768
(74) The intellect receives impassioned thoughts in three ways: through sense-perception, through the bodily temperament, and through memory.
1:769
藉著感官知覺,是當我們對之懷有情慾的那些事物觸動感官,便挑動心智生出帶情慾的思想;
Through sense-perception, when the things toward which we have passions strike upon it and move it to impassioned thoughts;
1:770
藉著氣質,是當身體的體質因放縱的飲食、鬼魔的作為或某種疾病而改變,又挑動心智生出帶情慾的思想,或生出抵擋神護理的思想;
through the temperament, when the body's constitution is altered by an undisciplined diet, by the activity of demons, or by some illness, and again moves it to impassioned thoughts or to thoughts against Providence;
1:771
and through memory, when memory brings back the thoughts of those things for which we have had passions, and likewise moves it to impassioned thoughts.
1:772
(75)在神為我們的使用所賜的事物中,有些在靈魂裡,有些在身體裡,有些則在身體之外圍;
(75) Of the things given to us by God for our use, some are found in the soul, some in the body, and some about the body;
1:773
例如在靈魂裡的,是它的各樣官能;
such as, in the soul, its faculties;
1:774
在身體裡的,是各感覺器官與其餘的肢體;
in the body, the sense organs and the remaining members;
1:775
about the body, food, money, possessions, and the like.
1:776
To use these well or ill, or the circumstances connected with them, shows us to be either virtuous or base.
1:777
(76)在與事物相關的種種境遇中,有些屬於靈魂裡的事物,有些屬於身體裡的事物,有些則屬於身體之外圍的事物;
(76) Of the circumstances connected with things, some belong to the things in the soul, some to those in the body, and some to those about the body;
1:778
屬於靈魂裡的,例如知識與無知、遺忘與記憶、愛與恨、懼怕與勇敢、憂傷與喜樂以及其餘的;
and of those in the soul, such as knowledge and ignorance, forgetfulness and memory, love and hatred, fear and courage, grief and joy, and the like;
1:779
屬於身體裡的,例如歡愉與痛苦、知覺與殘缺、健康與疾病、生與死以及這類的事;
of those in the body, such as pleasure and pain, sensation and disability, health and sickness, life and death, and the like;
1:780
and of those about the body, such as having good children and childlessness, wealth and poverty, glory and dishonor, and the like.
1:781
在這些事物中,有些被人視為善,有些被人視為惡,然而按其本身的道理而言,沒有一樣是惡的;
Of these things, some are considered good and some bad by men, though none of them is evil in its own principle (logos);
1:782
rather, according to their use they are found to be either properly evil or good.
1:783
(77) 知識按本性是善的,健康同樣也是;
(77) Knowledge is good by nature, and so likewise is health;
1:784
yet their opposites have benefited the many more than these have.
1:785
因為對於惡人,知識並不導向善果,縱然如前所述,它按本性是善的;
For to the wicked, knowledge does not turn out for good, even though by nature, as has been said, it is good;
1:786
健康、財富與喜樂同樣也是如此;
and likewise neither health, nor wealth, nor joy;
1:787
for they do not use these things beneficially.
1:788
所以對他們而言,與這些相反的事物反倒是有益的;
Therefore the opposites of these are profitable to them;
1:789
and so neither are those opposites evil in their own principle, even though they seem to be evil.
1:790
(78) Do not misuse your thoughts (noemata), lest of necessity you also misuse things.
1:791
For unless one first sins in the mind, one would never sin in act.
1:792
(79) 各類根本的惡行乃是屬土之人的形像,例如愚妄、怯懦、放縱、不義;
(79) The generic vices are the image of the earthly man—such as folly, cowardice, intemperance, injustice;
1:793
while the generic virtues are the image of the heavenly man—such as prudence, courage, temperance, justice.
1:794
And just as we have borne the image of the earthly, so let us also bear the image of the heavenly.
1:795
(80) If you wish to find the way that leads to life, seek it in the Way, and there you will find it—in Him who said:
1:796
I am the way, the truth, and the life.
1:797
Only seek it with great labor, for few are those who find it; and beware lest, having been left out of the few, you be found with the many.
1:798
A man refrains from evils for one of these reasons: either through fear of men, or through fear of judgment, or because of the recompense to come, or through love of God, or finally through a conscience that smites him.
1:799
(82) 有些人說,若不是另有一種力量牽引我們趨向惡,惡就不會存在於萬有之中;
(82) Some say that evil would not exist among beings, were there not some other power drawing us toward it;
1:800
but this power is nothing other than the neglect of the intellect's natural activities.
1:801
If, then, you too are willing, drive out negligence and you will at the same time expel evil—which is the mistaken use of thoughts, upon which follows the misuse of things.
1:802
(83) 按本性而論,我們裡面理性的部分既當順服神聖的邏各斯,又當管轄我們裡面非理性的部分;
(83) It is according to the nature of the rational part within us both to be subject to the divine Logos and to rule over the irrational part within us;
1:803
let this order, then, be kept in all things, and neither will evil exist among beings, nor will anything that draws toward it be found.
1:804
(84) Of thoughts, some are simple and some are composite.
1:805
單純的乃是無情慾的思念;
Simple are the dispassionate;
1:806
composite are the impassioned, as being compounded of passion and a mental image (noema).
1:807
This being so, one can observe many of the simple thoughts following the composite ones, whenever they begin to be stirred toward sinning in the mind.
1:808
For example: an impassioned thought concerning gold rose up in someone's memory, and he was impelled in his mind toward stealing, and so committed the sin in his intellect.
1:809
And following upon the memory of the gold came also the memory of the purse, the chest, the chamber, and the rest.
1:810
那關乎金子的記憶乃是複合的;
Now the memory of the gold was composite,
1:811
而那關乎錢袋、器皿以及其餘之物的記憶卻是單純的;
but that of the purse, the chest, and the rest was simple;
1:812
for the intellect had no passion toward them.
1:813
And the same holds with regard to every thought—in the case of vainglory, of woman, and of all the rest.
1:814
因為跟隨那帶情慾思念而來的思念,並非全都帶有情慾,正如前面的論述所指明的;
For not all the thoughts that follow upon an impassioned thought are themselves impassioned, as the argument has shown;
1:815
from these things, then, we are able to recognize which mental images are impassioned and which are simple.
1:816
(85) 有些人說,群鬼在睡眠中抓住身體的肢體,從而挑動淫亂的情慾;
(85) Some say that the demons, by laying hold of the members of the body during sleep, stir up the passion of fornication;
1:817
then the passion, once stirred, brings up the form of a woman to the intellect by way of the memory.
1:818
另有些人說,群鬼以婦人的樣式向心智顯現;
Others say that they appear to the intellect in the shape of a woman;
1:819
and by laying hold of the members of the body, they stir up the desire, and thus the fantasies arise.
1:820
還有些人說,在那臨近之鬼裡面所盛行的情慾挑動了情慾,於是靈魂便被點燃趨向這類思念,藉著記憶將那些形像帶上來;
Still others say that the passion which prevails in the demon drawing near stirs up the passion, and thus the soul is kindled toward such thoughts, bringing up the forms by way of the memory;
1:821
and concerning the other impassioned fantasies likewise, some say it comes about in this way, others in that.
1:822
Yet by none of the aforementioned ways are the demons able to stir up any passion whatsoever, when love and self-control are present in the soul—neither while the body is awake nor during sleep.
1:823
(86) Some of the commandments of the Law must be kept both bodily and spiritually, while others spiritually only.
1:824
For instance, 'You shall not commit adultery,' 'You shall not murder,' 'You shall not steal,' and the like, must be kept both bodily and spiritually—
1:825
and spiritually in a threefold manner.
1:826
But to be circumcised, to keep the Sabbath, to slay the lamb, to eat unleavened bread with bitter herbs, and the like, are to be kept spiritually only.
1:827
(87) There are three more general moral states among monks:
1:828
第一是在行為上絕不犯罪;
the first is to sin in no way in act;
1:829
第二是不讓帶情慾的思念在靈魂中逗留;
the second is not to let impassioned thoughts linger in the soul;
1:830
the third is to contemplate dispassionately in the mind the forms of women and of those who have caused grief.
1:831
(88) 那真正一無所有的人,乃是已經捨棄了一切屬於自己之物,在地上除了身體之外,全然一無所有的人;
(88) He is free of possessions who has renounced all that belongs to him and possesses nothing whatsoever on earth except his body;
1:832
and having severed even his attachment to it, he has entrusted the care of himself to God and to the godly.
1:833
(89) 在擁有財物的人中,有些是以無情慾的方式擁有,所以當被奪去這些財物時也不憂傷,就像那些歡歡喜喜接受自己家業被搶奪的人;
(89) Of those who possess things, some possess them dispassionately, and therefore when deprived of them they are not grieved, like those who received with joy the plundering of their goods;
1:834
另有些人卻是帶著情慾擁有,所以當將要被奪去時便深深憂傷,正如福音書中那位財主憂憂愁愁地走了;
but others possess them with passion, and therefore when about to be deprived they become deeply grieved, as the rich man in the Gospel went away sorrowful;
1:835
and if they are actually deprived, they grieve even unto death.
1:836
Deprivation, then, tests the disposition both of the dispassionate man and of the impassioned.
1:837
(90) 群鬼向那些完全禱告的人爭戰,要使他們無法以純淨的形式領受可感事物的意念;
(90) The demons make war on those who pray perfectly, so that they may not receive the mental images of sensible things in their bare form;
1:838
向那些有知識的人爭戰,要使帶情慾的思念在他們裡面逗留;
on those given to knowledge (the gnostics), so that impassioned thoughts may linger within them;
1:839
向那些在實行的生活中爭戰的人爭戰,要說服他們在行為上犯罪;
and on those who struggle in the active life, so as to persuade them to sin in act;
1:840
and in every way against all they struggle, that the wretched ones may separate men from God.
1:841
(91) Those who are trained in piety by divine providence in this life are tested through these three kinds of trials:
1:842
或藉著賜下令人愉悅之物,如健康、美貌、佳兒佳女、財富、榮譽以及諸如此類的事;
either through the giving of pleasant things, such as health, beauty, fine children, wealth, glory, and the like;
1:843
或藉著加諸的痛苦之事,如喪失兒女、財富與榮譽;
or through the infliction of grievous things, such as the loss of children, wealth, and glory;
1:844
or through things that cause pain to the body, such as diseases, torments, and the like.
1:845
To the first kind the Lord says:
1:846
『凡不撇下一切所有的,就不能作我的門徒』;
'Whoever does not renounce all that he possesses cannot be my disciple';
1:847
and to the second and third kinds:
1:848
'In your patient endurance you will gain possession of your souls.'
1:849
(92) They say that these four things alter the body's constitution and thereby supply the intellect with thoughts, whether passionate or dispassionate:
1:850
namely, the angels, the demons, the surrounding air, and one's diet (regimen).
1:851
他們說,天使是藉著話語使之改變;
The angels, they say, effect alteration through a word;
1:852
邪魔則藉著接觸;
the demons, through touch;
1:853
空氣則藉著它的變化(氣候轉換);
the surrounding air, through its changes;
1:854
飲食則藉著食物與飲料的性質,以及過量或不足;
and diet, through the qualities of foods and drinks, and through excess or deficiency;
1:855
apart from those alterations that befall it through memory, hearing, and sight, the soul being first affected by the grievous or joyful things that befall it.
1:856
靈魂既受這些事的觸動,便反過來改變身體的體質;
And being affected by these, the soul in turn alters the body's constitution;
1:857
while the constitution, being altered by the aforementioned factors, supplies the intellect with thoughts.
1:858
(93) 死亡,嚴格說來,就是與神隔絕;
(93) Death, properly speaking, is separation from God;
1:859
死的毒鉤就是罪;
and the sting of death is sin;
1:860
亞當既領受了這毒鉤,就同時被逐出生命樹、樂園,並與神隔絕;
and Adam, having received this sting, was at the same time banished from the tree of life, from paradise, and from God;
1:861
and the death of the body of necessity followed upon this.
1:862
然而生命,嚴格說來,乃是那說『我就是生命』的那一位;
But Life, properly speaking, is He who said, 'I am the life';
1:863
He, having entered into death, brought the one who had been put to death back again into life.
1:864
(94) A discourse that is written down is composed either for one's own remembrance, or for the benefit of others, or for both, or to the harm of certain persons, or for display, or out of necessity.
1:865
(95)『青草地』就是實行的美德;
(95) 'A place of green pasture' is the practical virtue;
1:866
and 'the water of rest' is the knowledge of created things.
1:867
(96)『死蔭』就是人的一生;
(96) 'The shadow of death' is human life;
1:868
so if anyone is with God and God is with him, that person can say plainly:
1:869
'Even though I walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.'
1:870
(97) 純潔的心智正確地看見諸事;
(97) A pure intellect sees things rightly;
1:871
受過操練的理性(言語)把所看見的呈於眼前;
a well-trained reason (discourse) brings what has been seen before our eyes;
1:872
and a keen hearing receives them.
1:873
But the one deprived of these three reviles the one who has spoken.
1:874
(98) With God is the one who knows the Holy Trinity, and its work of creation and providence, and who has rendered the passible part of his soul dispassionate.
1:875
(99) 他們說,『杖』表徵神的審判;
(99) They say that 'the rod' signifies the judgment of God;
1:876
and 'the staff' signifies His providence.
1:877
It belongs, then, to the one who has partaken of the knowledge of these things to say:
1:878
'Your rod and your staff, they have comforted me.'
1:879
(100) When the intellect is stripped bare of the passions and is illumined by the contemplation of beings, then it is able both to dwell in God and to pray as it ought.
1:880
第三百章。(1) 對思念與事物合理的運用,能產生節制、愛與知識;
THIRD CENTURY. (1) The reasonable use of conceptions and of things produces self-control, love, and knowledge;
1:881
but the unreasonable use produces dissipation, hatred, and ignorance.
1:882
(2) 'You have prepared a table before me,' and what follows.
1:883
這裡的『筵席』表徵實行的美德;
The 'table' here signifies the practical virtue;
1:884
for this was prepared by Christ over against those who afflict us.
1:885
那滋潤心智的『油』,表徵對受造之物的默觀;
And the 'oil' that anoints the intellect signifies the contemplation of created things;
1:886
那『神的杯』表徵對神的知識;
and the 'cup of God' signifies the knowledge of God;
1:887
and 'His mercy' signifies His Word and God.
1:888
For He, through His incarnation, pursues us all our days, until He overtakes all who are to be saved, as He did Paul.
1:889
那『殿(家)』表徵國度,眾聖徒都要在其中得以復興;
And the 'house' signifies the kingdom, in which all the saints are restored;
1:890
and the 'length of days' signifies eternal life.
1:891
(3) It is through misuse that the vices of the soul's powers befall us—that is, of the concupiscible, the irascible, and the rational powers.
1:892
理性能力的錯用,就是無知與愚妄;
The misuse of the rational power is ignorance and folly;
1:893
and that of the irascible and concupiscible powers is hatred and dissipation.
1:894
然而對這些能力的正用,就是知識與明智、愛與節制;
But the right use of these is knowledge and prudence, love and self-control;
1:895
and if this is so, then nothing that has been created and made by God is evil.
1:896
(4) 食物並非惡,貪食才是惡;
(4) Foods are not evil, but gluttony is;
1:897
生兒育女並非惡,淫亂才是惡;
nor is the begetting of children, but fornication is;
1:898
財富並非惡,貪財才是惡;
nor is wealth, but avarice is;
1:899
nor is glory, but vainglory is.
1:900
And if this is so, then there is nothing evil among existing things except misuse, which arises from the intellect's negligence regarding its natural cultivation.
1:901
irrational anger, mindless desire, reckless imagination.
1:902
But irrationality, mindlessness, and rashness in rational beings are privations of reason, of intellect, and of careful discernment.
1:903
而缺失是後於既有之德性習慣的;
And privations are subsequent to the possession of habits;
1:904
therefore there was a time when reason, intellect, and reverent discernment were present in them.
1:905
倘若如此,那麼連那些鬼魔也不是本性邪惡的;
And if this is so, then neither are the demons evil by nature;
1:906
rather, they have become evil through the misuse of their natural powers.
1:907
(六)有些情慾是產生放縱的;
(6) Some of the passions are productive of licentiousness;
1:908
others are productive both of licentiousness and of hatred.
1:909
(七)貪食與好享美味是放縱的原因;
(7) Gluttony and gourmandizing are causes of licentiousness;
1:910
而貪財與虛榮則是仇恨鄰舍的原因;
but avarice and vainglory are causes of hatred toward one's neighbor;
1:911
and the mother of these, self-love, is the cause of both.
1:912
(八)自愛是對身體那種被情慾左右、無理性的愛戀,與之相對的是愛德與節制;
(8) Self-love is the passionate and irrational love for the body, to which are opposed love and self-control;
1:913
he who has it has all the passions.
1:914
(九)使徒說:「從來沒有人恨惡自己的肉身」;
(9) "No one," says the Apostle, "ever hated his own flesh";
1:915
but plainly he buffets it and brings it into subjection, furnishing it with nothing beyond food and clothing, and these only such as are necessary for living.
1:916
Thus then a man loves it without passion, and as a servant of divine things he nourishes and cherishes it, supplying only what meets its needs.
1:917
(10) Whomever one loves, him one is altogether eager to serve.
1:918
所以若有人愛神,必定竭力去行祂所喜悦的事;
If then one loves God, he is altogether eager to do what is pleasing to Him;
1:919
but if he loves the flesh, he hastens to perform what delights it.
1:920
(十一)使神喜悦的是愛、節制、默觀與禱告;
(11) To God are pleasing love and temperance and contemplation and prayer;
1:921
to the flesh, gluttony and licentiousness and the things that increase them.
1:922
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
1:923
(十二)心智若傾向神,便以身體為僕役,除維生所需以外別無所供;
(12) The mind, if it inclines toward God, has the body as its servant and supplies it with nothing beyond what is necessary for living;
1:924
but if it inclines toward the flesh, it becomes enslaved to the passions, ever taking thought for the body to satisfy its desires.
1:925
(13) If you wish to gain mastery over your thoughts, take care of the passions, and you will easily drive the thoughts from the mind.
1:926
例如對治淫念:要禁食、儆醒、勞苦、獨居;
For instance, against fornication: fast, keep vigil, labor, and live in solitude;
1:927
對治忿怒與憂愁:要輕看榮耀、羞辱與物質之物;
against anger and grief: despise glory and dishonor and material things;
1:928
against the remembrance of wrongs: pray for the one who grieved you, and you will be set free.
1:929
(十四)不要拿自己與人中較軟弱的相比,倒要更竭力伸展自己去達到愛的誋命;
(14) Do not measure yourself against the weaker among men, but rather stretch yourself out toward the commandment of love;
