1:930
因為若拿自己與前者相比,你必跌入自滿的坑中;
for by measuring yourself against the former, you fall into the pit of self-conceit;
1:931
but by stretching toward the latter, you advance to the height of humility.
1:932
(15) If you altogether keep the commandment of love toward your neighbor, why do you breed bitterness through grief against him? Is it not plain that, preferring transient things to that love and clinging to them, you wage war against your brother? (16) Gold has become so coveted by men, not so much for its usefulness as because through it most people serve their pleasures.
1:933
(17) Three are the causes of the love of money:
1:934
好享樂、虛榮與不信;
love of pleasure, vainglory, and unbelief;
1:935
and of the three, unbelief is the most grievous.
1:936
(十八)好享樂的人愛錢,為要藉它過奢華生活;
(18) The pleasure-lover loves money in order to live luxuriously by it;
1:937
虛榮的人愛錢,為要藉它得人尊榮;
the vainglorious, in order to be honored by it;
1:938
the unbeliever, in order to hide and hoard it, fearing famine or old age or sickness or exile; and he sets his hope on it rather than on God, the Creator and Provider of all creation, even down to the least and smallest of living things.
1:939
(19) There are four who acquire money:
1:940
前述的三種人,並那善於管理的人;
the aforesaid three, and the steward;
1:941
and only the latter plainly acquires it rightly, that he may never cease supplying each person's need.
1:942
(二十)一切染了情慾的思念,或激動魂的慾性,或攪擾魂的怒性,或昏蔽魂的理性;
(20) All impassioned thoughts either excite the desiring faculty of the soul, or disturb the irascible faculty, or darken the reasoning faculty;
1:943
and from this it comes about that the mind grows dim of sight toward spiritual contemplation and toward the departure of prayer.
1:944
And for this reason the monk, and especially the hesychast, ought to attend carefully to his thoughts, and to know and to cut off their causes.
1:945
例如,魂的慾性是被那對婦女染情的記憶所激動;
For instance, the desiring faculty of the soul is excited by impassioned memories of women;
1:946
也被飲食上的無度、以及與婦女頻繁而無謂的來往所激動;
[and by] intemperance in food and drink, and by frequent and senseless association with women themselves;
1:947
and these are curtailed by hunger and thirst and vigil and withdrawal.
1:948
而怒性又被那對使人憂傷者的染情記憶所攪擾;
And the irascible faculty in turn is disturbed by impassioned memories of those who have caused grief;
1:949
其根源乃是好享樂、虛榮與貪愛物質;
the causes of these are love of pleasure, vainglory, and love of material things;
1:950
因為為著這些,被情慾左右的人就憂傷,或因失去,或因未能得著;
for on account of these the passionate man is grieved, either as having been deprived or as not having attained;
1:951
and these are curtailed by contempt and scorn for these very things, for the sake of love toward God.
1:952
(二十一)神認識祂自己,也認識由祂所造的萬物;
(21) God knows Himself, and He knows also the things made by Him;
1:953
the holy powers too know God, and they know also the things made by God.
1:954
But not as God knows Himself and the things made by Him, so also do the holy powers know God and the things made by Him.
1:955
(二十二)神是從祂自己有福的本質認識祂自己;
(22) God knows Himself from His own blessed essence;
1:956
and the things made by Him from His wisdom, by which and in which He made all things.
1:957
但聖潔的能力是藉著分享來認識神,雖然神是超越一切分享的;
But the holy powers know God by participation, He being beyond participation;
1:958
and the things made by Him by the apprehension of the principles contemplated in them.
1:959
(23) The things that have come to be are outside the mind, but within it the mind takes up their contemplation.
1:960
Yet it is not so with God, who is eternal and infinite and undefined, and who has graciously bestowed upon things that are their being and well-being and ever-being.
1:961
(二十四)有理性、有理智的本性分享於聖潔的神,既藉其存在本身,也藉其趨向美善存在的稟賦;
(24) The rational and intellectual essence participates in the holy God, both by its very being and by its aptitude for well-being;
1:962
我所說的是良善與智慧;
I mean goodness and wisdom;
1:963
and by the grace of ever-being.
1:964
因此,它便認識神;
By this, then, it knows God;
1:965
and the things made by Him by apprehension, as has been said, of the artful wisdom contemplated in the things made, which is bare and without subsistence, existing only as constituted within the mind.
1:966
(25) Four of the divine attributes, which hold together and guard and preserve all that exists, God in His supreme goodness has made common, bringing into being the rational and intellectual essence:
1:967
being, ever-being, goodness, and wisdom.
1:968
其中兩樣祂賜給了本質本身;
Of these He bestowed two upon the essence;
1:969
另兩樣祂賜給了意志抉擇的稟賦;
and two upon the gnomic aptitude;
1:970
賜給本質的,是存在與永遠存在;
and to the essence, being and ever-being;
1:971
and to the gnomic aptitude, goodness and wisdom, so that what He Himself is in essence, the creature might become by participation.
1:972
受造物乃是照著「存在者」的形像,作為一個存在者;
And after the image, as a being, of Being;
1:973
並作為永遠存在者,照著「永遠存在者」;
and as ever-being, of the Ever-Being;
1:974
雖非無始,卻是無終的;
even if not without beginning, yet without end;
1:975
並照著神的樣式,作為良善的,照著「至善者」;
and after the likeness, as good, of the Good;
1:976
並作為有智慧的,照著「全智者」;
and as wise, of the Wise;
1:977
the one by grace [after] the one by nature.
1:978
凡有理性的本性都是照著神的形像;
And after the image, every rational nature is of God;
1:979
but after the likeness, only the good and the wise.
1:980
(26) Every rational and intellectual essence is divided into two, that is, into the angelic and the human nature.
1:981
And the whole angelic nature again is divided into two universal dispositions and companies, holy and accursed, that is, into holy powers and unclean demons.
1:982
And the whole human nature is divided into only two universal dispositions, the godly, I say, and the ungodly.
1:983
(27) God, being self-existence and self-goodness and self-wisdom, or rather, to speak more truly, being even beyond all these, has nothing whatever opposed to Him.
1:984
But created things, since they all have their existence by participation and grace, and the rational and intellectual ones also have the aptitude for goodness and wisdom, do have opposites:
1:985
與存在相對的是不存在;
to existence, non-existence;
1:986
and to the aptitude for goodness and wisdom, evil and ignorance.
1:987
這些是否永遠存在或不存在,乃在乎那造它們者的權能;
And whether these always exist or do not exist lies in the power of their Maker;
1:988
but whether they participate in His goodness and wisdom or do not participate, lies in the will of rational beings.
1:989
[Some say creatures] say there is nothing opposed [to essence], and that the opposition lies in the qualities alone.
1:990
但我們說,唯獨神聖的本質沒有任何與之相對的,因它是永恆、無限的,並將永恆賜給其餘之物;
But we say that only the divine essence has nothing opposed to it, since it is eternal and infinite and bestows eternity on the others;
1:991
whereas to the essence of created beings, non-being is opposed, and it lies in the power of Him who truly is for it to be always or not to be, and His gifts are irrevocable.
1:992
And for this reason it both exists always and shall exist, being held together by the almighty power, even if it has non-being as its opposite, as has been said—being brought from non-being into being by God, and having its being or non-being in His will.
1:993
(29) Just as evil is a privation of good, and ignorance a privation of knowledge, so also non-being is a privation of being—not of Him who truly is,
1:994
but of that which is by participation in Him who truly is.
1:995
前者(惡與無知)的缺失乃是隨著受造者的意向而來;
And the privations of the former follow upon the disposition of created beings;
1:996
but that of the latter (being) lies in the will of the Maker, who out of goodness ever wills that things should be, and that they should ever be benefited by Him.
1:997
(三十)在一切受造之物中,有些是有理性、有理智的,能接受相反之物,如德行與惡行、知識與無知;
(30) Of all created things, some are rational and intellectual and receptive of opposites, such as virtue and vice, knowledge and ignorance;
1:998
while bodies are diverse, composed of opposites, that is, of earth, air, fire, and water.
1:999
有些是全然非物質、無形體的,雖然其中有些與物體相聯結;
And some are wholly incorporeal and immaterial, even if some of these are joined to bodies;
1:1000
while others have their constitution from matter and form only.
1:1001
(31) All bodies are by nature inert.
1:1002
(三十二)魂的諸般能力中,一是滋養與生長的能力;
(32) Of the powers of the soul, one is nutritive and growth-giving;
1:1003
另一是想像與衝動的能力;
another is imaginative and impulsive;
1:1004
and another is reasoning and intellectual.
1:1005
唯有第一種能力是植物所分有的;
And of the first alone do plants partake;
1:1006
除此以外,無理性的禽獸還分有第二種;
of the second, in addition to this, the irrational animals;
1:1007
of the third, in addition to the two, human beings.
1:1008
前兩種能力是會朽壞的;
And the two powers are corruptible;
1:1009
but the third is shown to be incorruptible and immortal.
1:1010
(三十三)聖潔的能力彼此傳遞光照,也將其德行或其內裡的知識傳給人的本性;
(33) The holy powers, imparting illumination to one another, impart to human nature also either their virtue or the knowledge that is in them;
1:1011
所傳的德行,就是那效法神的良善,藉此他們使自己、彼此並在其下者都得益處,使之成為像神的;
virtue, namely that God-imitating goodness, by which they benefit both themselves and one another and those below them, making them godlike;
1:1012
and knowledge, either something more exalted concerning God—
1:1013
for it says, "You, Lord, are Most High forevermore"—
1:1014
or something deeper concerning bodies, or more precise concerning incorporeal things, or clearer concerning providence, or more distinct concerning judgment.
1:1015
(三十四)心智的不潔,第一是持有虛假的知識;
(34) The impurity of the mind is, first, to have false knowledge;
1:1016
second, to be ignorant of any of the universals—
1:1017
我是就人的心智而言,因為對個別之事毫無無知乃是天使的事;
I speak in relation to the human mind, for it belongs to an angel to be ignorant of none of the particulars;
1:1018
第三是持有染情慾的思念;
third, to have impassioned thoughts;
1:1019
and fourth, to consent to sin.
1:1020
(三十五)魂的不潔乃是不照本性而行動;
(35) The impurity of the soul is not to act according to nature;
1:1021
for from this the impassioned thoughts are born in the mind.
1:1022
For then it acts according to nature, when its passible powers—I mean the irascible and the desiring—remain free of passion amid the assault of things and of the thoughts about them.
1:1023
(36) The impurity of the body is sin in act.
1:1024
(37) He loves stillness who is not affected by the things of the world; and he loves all men who loves nothing human; and he has knowledge of God and of divine things who is not scandalized at anyone, whether on account of his failings or on account of thoughts arising from suspicion.
1:1025
(三十八)不被事物所牽動,固然是大事;
(38) Great is it not to be affected by things;
1:1026
but far greater than this is to remain free of passion toward the thoughts about them.
1:1027
(39) Love and self-control keep the mind free of passion both toward things and toward the thoughts about them.
1:1028
(四十)愛神之人的心智,並不與事物爭戰,也不與關於事物的思念爭戰,乃與那繫於思念上的情慾爭戰;
(40) The mind of the God-loving man does not war against things, nor against the thoughts about them, but against the passions joined to the thoughts;
1:1029
for instance, it does not war against the woman, nor against the one who caused grief, nor against their images, but against the passions joined to the images.
1:1030
(四十一)修道士與鬼魔的整場爭戰,乃是要將情慾從思念中分離出來;
(41) The whole warfare of the monk against the demons is to separate the passions from the thoughts;
1:1031
for otherwise he cannot look upon things without passion.
1:1032
(四十二)「事物」是一回事,「思念」是另一回事,「情慾」又是另一回事;
(42) A thing is one matter, a thought another, and a passion another;
1:1033
「事物」例如:男人、女人、金子等等;
and a thing is, for instance, a man, a woman, gold, and so forth;
1:1034
「思念」例如:對前述之物的一個單純記憶;
a thought is, for instance, a bare memory of one of the aforesaid;
1:1035
a passion is, for instance, irrational affection or indiscriminate hatred toward one of the aforesaid.
1:1036
It is against the passion, therefore, that the monk's battle is waged.
1:1037
(43) An impassioned thought is a thought compounded of passion and a [bare] thought.
1:1038
讓我們把情慾從思念中分離出來,剩下的便是單純的思念;
Let us separate the passion from the thought, and the bare thought remains;
1:1039
and we separate them by spiritual love and self-control, if we are willing.
1:1040
(四十四)諸般德行使心智脱離情慾;
(44) The virtues separate the mind from the passions;
1:1041
屬靈的默觀使心智脱離單純的思念;
the spiritual contemplations, from the bare thoughts;
1:1042
and pure prayer presents the mind itself to God.
1:1043
(四十五)諸般德行是為著對受造之物的知識而存在;
(45) The virtues exist for the sake of the knowledge of created things;
1:1044
知識是為著那認識者而存在;
knowledge, for the sake of the knower;
1:1045
and the knower, for the sake of Him who is known beyond knowledge and who knows beyond knowing.
1:1046
(46) Not as if needing anything did the superabundant God bring created things into being, but that they, partaking of Him according to their measure, might find enjoyment, and that He Himself might rejoice over His works, beholding them rejoicing and insatiably ever being filled with Him who is unfailing.
1:1047
(四十七)世上有許多虛心的人,卻不是出於正當的緣故;
(47) The world has many poor in spirit, but not as it ought to be;
1:1048
有許多哀慟的人,卻是因為錢財的損失或兒女的喪亡;
and many that mourn, but on account of loss of money or the death of children;
1:1049
有許多溫柔的人,卻是對污穢的情慾溫柔;
and many that are meek, but toward unclean passions;
1:1050
有許多飢渴的人,卻是渴想奪取他人之物、藉不義得利;
and many that hunger and thirst, but to seize what belongs to others and to gain by injustice;
1:1051
有許多憐恤人的人,卻是對身體和屬身體之事憐恤;
and many that are merciful, but toward the body and the things of the body;
1:1052
有清心的人,卻是為著虛榮;
and pure in heart, but for the sake of vainglory;
1:1053
有使人和睦的人,卻是叫魂順服肉身;
and peacemakers, but who subject the soul to the flesh;
1:1054
有許多受逼迫的人,卻是因行事不法;
and many that are persecuted, but as unruly;
1:1055
and many that are reviled, but for shameful sins.
1:1056
But those alone are blessed who do and suffer these things for Christ and according to Christ.
1:1057
可見他們有福,並非因為他們行這些事、受這些苦;
So that they are not blessed because they do and suffer these things;
1:1058
因為前面所說的那些人也行同樣的事;
for the aforementioned do the same;
1:1059
but because they do and suffer these things for Christ and according to Christ.
1:1060
(48) In all that is done by us, the aim is sought by God, as has often been said, whether we act for His sake or for some other reason.
1:1061
所以當我們願意行甚麼善事時,我們的目的當不在於討人喜悦,乃在於神;
When therefore we wish to do anything good, let us have as our aim not the pleasing of men, but God;
1:1062
好叫我們常常仰望祂,為祂的緣故行一切事;
so that, ever looking to Him, we may do all things for His sake;
1:1063
lest we both endure the labor and lose the reward.
1:1064
(49) Cast out of the mind, at the time of prayer, both the bare thoughts of human affairs and the contemplations of all created things, lest, imagining the lesser things, you fall away from Him who is incomparably better than all that exists.
1:1065
(50) If we love God genuinely, by that very love we cast out the passions.
1:1066
對祂的愛,就是把祂看得比世界更重,把魂看得比肉身更重;
And love toward Him is to prefer Him to the world and the soul to the flesh;
1:1067
to devote oneself continually [to Him] through self-control and love and prayer and psalmody and the like.
1:1068
(五十一)我們若長久專心於神,看顧魂那能受情慾影響的部分,便不再被思念的攻擊衝得擱淺;
(51) If, devoting ourselves to God for a long time, we take care of the passible part of the soul, we shall no longer be driven aground by the assaults of thoughts;
1:1069
but, understanding their causes more precisely and cutting them off, we become more discerning, so that there may be fulfilled in us the saying:
1:1070
"And my eye has looked upon my enemies, and my ear shall hear of those who rise up against me to do evil."
1:1071
(五十二)當你看見你的心智在世界的思念中虔敬、公義地運行時,要知道你的身體也保持潔淨、無罪;
(52) When you see your mind moving piously and justly amid the thoughts of the world, know that your body too remains pure and sinless;
1:1072
but when you see the mind in its thinking dwelling upon sins and you do not check it, know that your body too will not long delay before falling into these very sins.
1:1073
(五十三)正如身體以〔世上的〕事物為其世界,照樣,心智也以思念為其世界;
(53) Just as the body has the things [of the world] as its world, so the mind has the thoughts as its world;
1:1074
正如身體藉婦人的身體犯姦淫,照樣,心智也藉對自己身體的想像,與那婦人的意念犯姦淫;
and just as the body commits fornication with the body of the woman, so the mind commits fornication with the thought of the woman through the imagination of its own body;
1:1075
for it sees the form of its own body mingling with the form of the woman in its thinking.
1:1076
In the same way it also takes vengeance on the form of the one who caused grief, in its thinking, through the form of its own body.
1:1077
其餘的罪也是如此;
And likewise in the case of the other sins;
1:1078
for whatever the body does in act in the world of things, these the mind also does in the world of thoughts.
1:1079
(54) Is it not enough to make one shudder and be amazed and stand in ecstasy of mind, that God and Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son?
1:1080
「你們不要論斷人,免得你們被論斷;
"Judge not, that you be not judged;
1:1081
condemn not, that you be not condemned."
1:1082
"Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes"; and:
1:1083
"In whatever judgment you judge another, you condemn yourself."
1:1084
但人卻不再為自己的罪哀哭,反把審判從子那裡奪過來,自己竟像無罪的一樣,彼此論斷、彼此定罪;
But men, having ceased to weep over their own sins, have taken judgment away from the Son, and themselves, as if sinless, judge and condemn one another;
1:1085
and heaven was astonished at this, and the earth shuddered, yet they are not ashamed, being without feeling.
1:1086
(55) He who pries into the sins of others, or judges his brother on suspicion, has not yet even made a beginning of repentance, nor of searching out and knowing his own sins, which are in truth heavier than a great weight of lead; nor has he understood whence a man becomes heavy of heart, loving vanity and seeking after falsehood.
1:1087
(56) Self-love, as has often been said, is established as the cause of all impassioned thoughts.
1:1088
For from it are born the three most generic thoughts of desire:
1:1089
those of gluttony, of avarice, and of vainglory.
1:1090
從貪食生出淫亂的思念;
From gluttony is born the thought of fornication;
1:1091
從貪財生出貪婪的思念;
from avarice, the thought of covetousness;
1:1092
from vainglory, the thought of pride.
1:1093
其餘的一切思念,都跟隨這三者中的某一個;
And all the rest follow upon each of the three;
1:1094
those of anger and grief and remembrance of wrongs and listlessness and envy and backbiting and the rest.
1:1095
These passions, then, bind the mind to material things and hold it down to the earth, lying upon it like a most heavy stone, though by nature it is lighter and swifter than fire.
1:1096
(五十七)一切情慾的開端乃是自愛;
(57) The beginning of all the passions is self-love;
1:1097
而自愛就是對身體那無理性的愛戀;
and self-love is the irrational love for the body;
1:1098
he who has cut this off has cut off together all the passions that come from it.
1:1099
(58) Just as parents are fondly attached to the children born of them, so also the mind is naturally attached to its own reasonings.
1:1100
And just as to the doting parents their own children, even if they are utterly ridiculous, appear the most seemly and beautiful of all, so also to the foolish mind its own reasonings, even if they are the most worthless of all, appear the most sensible of all.
1:1101
但在有智慧的人那裡,對自己的思想卻不是如此;
But to the wise man it is not so with his own reasonings;
1:1102
反倒當他似乎深信自己的思想是真實又美好的時候,他尤其不信靠自己的判斷,乃設立別的智者作他思想的評判者,免得他奔跑、或已經奔跑,是徒然的;
rather, when he seems to be fully assured that they are true and good, then especially he does not trust his own judgment, but appoints other wise men as judges of his own reasonings, lest he run, or have run, in vain;
1:1103
and from them he receives confirmation.
1:1104
(五十九)當你勝過了某一較卑賤的情慾,例如貪食、淫亂、忿怒或貪婪,立刻就有虛榮的思念向你撲來;
(59) When you conquer one of the baser passions, such as gluttony or fornication or anger or covetousness, immediately the thought of vainglory flies upon you;
1:1105
and if you conquer this, the thought of pride succeeds it.
1:1106
(六十)一切卑賤的情慾,當它們轄制魂的時候,便把虛榮的思念從魂中驅逐出去;
(60) All the base passions, when they dominate the soul, drive out from it the thought of vainglory;
1:1107
but when all the aforesaid are defeated, they release it back upon the soul.
1:1108
(六十一)虛榮無論是被除去或是仍存留,都生出驕傲;
(61) Vainglory, whether being done away with or remaining, gives birth to pride;
1:1109
and when it is done away with, it produces self-conceit.
1:1110
(六十二)虛榮藉著隱密的修行而被除去;
(62) Vainglory is done away with by hidden labor;
1:1111
and pride, by ascribing one's good deeds to God.
1:1112
(63) He who has been deemed worthy of the knowledge of God, and has richly enjoyed the pleasure that comes from it, despises all the pleasures born of the desiring faculty.
1:1113
(六十四)凡貪戀屬地之物的人,所貪戀的或是食物,或是滿足下體情慾之物,或是屬人的榮耀,或是錢財,或是隨這些而來的別的事物;
(64) He who desires earthly things desires either food, or the things that gratify the belly's lust, or human glory, or money, or something else that follows upon these;
1:1114
and unless the mind finds something better than these, to which it may transfer its desire, it will by no means be persuaded to despise these utterly.
1:1115
And incomparably better than these is the knowledge of God and of divine things.
1:1116
(65) Those who despise pleasures despise them either out of fear, or out of hope, or out of knowledge and love toward God.
1:1117
(66) Knowledge of divine things without passion does not persuade the mind to despise material things utterly, but is like a bare thought of a sensible object.
1:1118
For having been cleansed for a little while through diligence and having attained knowledge, but afterward growing careless, they became like Saul, who, having been deemed worthy of a kingdom and having conducted himself unworthily, was cast out of it with terrible wrath.
1:1119
(六十七)正如對屬人事務的單純念頭不能強迫心智輕看神聖之事,照樣,對神聖之事的單純知識也不能說服心智全然輕看屬人之事;
(67) Just as the bare thought of human affairs does not compel the mind to despise divine things, so neither does the bare knowledge of divine things persuade it to despise human things utterly;
1:1120
because the truth now exists in shadows and conjectures.
1:1121
And for this reason there is need of the blessed passion of holy love, which binds the mind to spiritual contemplations and persuades it to prefer the immaterial to the material and the intelligible and divine to the sensible.
1:1122
(六十八)凡斬斷了情慾、使自己的思念成為單純的人,並不就因此已將思念轉向神聖之事;他反倒可能對屬人之事與神聖之事都不為所動;
(68) Not at all has he who has cut off the passions and made his thoughts bare thereby already turned them toward divine things; but he may be affected neither toward human nor toward divine things;
1:1123
which happens in the case of those who are merely practical and have not yet been deemed worthy of knowledge, who abstain from the passions out of fear of punishment or hope of the kingdom.
1:1124
And we have knowledge in mirrors and riddles.
1:1125
And for this reason we have great need of occupation with them, so that by long meditation and converse with them we may form a habit of the contemplations that is hard to be torn away.
1:1126
(六十九)我們若只暫時斬斷了情慾的根源,從事屬靈的默觀,卻不常住在其中、以此為我們的本分,便容易又轉回到肉身的情慾去,從中所收的不過是帶著自滿的單純知識而已;
(69) If, having cut off the causes of the passions for a little while, we occupy ourselves with spiritual contemplations, but do not always dwell in them, making this our very work, we easily turn back again to the passions of the flesh, reaping nothing thence but bare knowledge with self-conceit;
1:1127
the end of which is both the gradual darkening of that knowledge itself and the complete turning of the mind toward material things.
1:1128
(七十)一種可責的愛之情感,使心智專注於物質之物;
(70) A blameworthy passion of love occupies the mind with material things;
1:1129
a praiseworthy passion of love binds it to divine things.
1:1130
因為心智習於在它所流連的事物上擴展自己;
For the mind is wont to expand in those things upon which it dwells;
1:1131
and in those things in which it expands, in these it also turns its desire and love, whether in divine and proper and intelligible things, or in the things and passions of the flesh.
1:1132
(七十二)神創造了不可見的世界與可見的世界;
(72) God created the invisible world and the visible;
1:1133
and the soul and the body too, plainly He made.
1:1134
And if the visible world is so beautiful, what then must the invisible be? And if that one is better than this, how much more, beyond both, is God who created them? If, then, the Maker of all beautiful things is better than all created things, by what reasoning does the mind, forsaking that which is better than all, occupy itself with the things worse than all—I mean with the passions of the flesh?
1:1135
Or is it plain that, having from birth associated with and grown accustomed to this, it has not yet received perfect experience of Him who is better than all and beyond all? If, then, by long ascetic practice of self-control over pleasures and of meditation on divine things, we little by little tear it away from such a relation, it expands in divine things, advancing little by little, and recognizes its own proper dignity, and at last transfers its whole longing to the divine.
1:1136
(73) He who dispassionately speaks of a brother's sin speaks for one of two reasons: either to correct him or to benefit another.
1:1137
But if he speaks apart from these reasons, whether to the man himself or to another, he speaks in order to reproach or to disparage him, and he will not escape the divine abandonment, but will altogether fall into some fault, either his own or another's, and being reproved and reviled by others he will be put to shame.
1:1138
(74) The principle of those who commit the same sin in act is not one and the same, but diverse.
1:1139
例如,出於習慣而犯罪是一回事,出於被擄掠而犯罪又是另一回事;
For instance, to sin from habit is one thing, and to sin from being carried away is another;
1:1140
後者在犯罪之前並無此意圖,犯罪之後也沒有,反倒為所發生的事極其痛悔;
the latter neither had the intention before the sin nor after the sin, but is even exceedingly pained over what has happened;
1:1141
但那出於習慣而犯罪的人,則恰恰相反;
but he who sins from habit is the opposite;
1:1142
for first he did not cease sinning in his thought even beforehand, and after committing the act he is of the same disposition.
1:1143
(75) He who pursues the virtues for the sake of vainglory plainly also pursues knowledge for the sake of vainglory.
1:1144
And such a one plainly neither does anything nor speaks for edification, but in all things hunts for the glory that comes from those who see or hear.
1:1145
這情慾被揭露出來,乃是當前述的某些人對他的作為或言語加以指責,他便為此極其憂傷——卻不是因為他們未受造就;
And the passion is exposed when some of the aforesaid bring blame upon his works or words, and he is exceedingly grieved at this—not because they were not edified;
1:1146
因為這原不是他的目的;
for this was not his aim;
1:1147
but because he himself was made of no account.
1:1148
(76) The passion of avarice is exposed in this:
1:1149
in taking with joy and giving with grief.
1:1150
And such a one cannot be a good steward.
1:1151
[A man acts] either out of love for God, or out of hope of recompense, or out of fear of punishment, or out of fear of men, or out of nature, or out of pleasure, or out of gain, or out of vainglory, or out of necessity.
1:1152
(78) To be rid of thoughts is one thing, and to be freed from passions another.
1:1153
人常常在那些他對之有情慾的事物不在面前時,便擺脫了思念;
And often a man is rid of thoughts when the things toward which he has the passions are not present;
1:1154
and when the things appear, he is exposed.
1:1155
One must therefore watch the mind in the presence of things and know toward what it has the passion.
1:1156
(79) That one is a genuine friend who, in time of trial, bears with his neighbor the afflictions and needs and misfortunes that arise from circumstances, as if they were his own, calmly and undisturbed.
1:1157
(八十)不要輕慢你的良心,它常給你最美好的勸告;
(80) Do not dishonor your conscience, which ever counsels you most excellently;
1:1158
for it sets before you a divine and angelic judgment, and frees you from the hidden defilements of the heart, and grants you boldness toward God at your departure.
1:1159
(81) If you wish to become discerning and moderate, and not to be enslaved to the passion of self-conceit, ever seek in the things that are what is hidden from your knowledge.
1:1160
你既發現有極多樣的事物是你所未察覺的,便要既驚訝於自己的無知,又收斂自己的心思;如此認識了自己,你便要明白許多偉大而奇妙的事;
And finding very many and diverse things that escape you, you will both marvel at your own ignorance and humble your mind; and coming to know yourself, you will understand many great and wonderful things;
1:1161
since thinking that one knows does not allow one to advance in knowing.
1:1162
(八十二)真正願意得救的人,乃是那不抗拒醫生之良藥的人;
(82) That one truly wishes to be saved who does not resist the medicines of the Physician;
1:1163
and these are the pains and griefs brought on through various afflictions.
1:1164
But he who resists does not know what is being accomplished here, nor with what benefit he will depart hence.
1:1165
(八十三)虛榮與貪財是彼此相生的;
(83) Vainglory and avarice are generative of one another;
1:1166
因為虛榮的人致富,富有的人變得虛榮——但這是就屬世的人而言;
for the vainglorious grow rich, and the rich become vainglorious—but this is so with worldly men;
1:1167
至於修道士,因他一無所有,倒更易陷入虛榮;
since the monk, being without possessions, rather becomes vainglorious;
1:1168
but if he has money, he hides it, being ashamed to have a thing unbefitting his habit.
1:1169
(八十四)修道士的虛榮,其特徵乃是以德行並隨之而來的事為虛榮的資本;
(84) It is proper to the vainglory of the monk to take vainglory in virtue and the things that follow upon it;
1:1170
and proper to his pride to be exalted over his achievements and to set others at naught, and to ascribe these things to himself and not to God.
1:1171
But it is proper to the vainglory and pride of the worldly man to take vainglory and be exalted over beauty and wealth and power and prudence.
1:1172
(八十五)屬世之人的成就,乃是修道士的敗落;
(85) The achievements of worldly men are the downfalls of monks;
1:1173
and the achievements of monks are the downfalls of worldly men.
1:1174
例如,屬世之人的成就,乃是財富、榮耀、權勢、奢華、身體健壯、兒女眾多以及隨這些而來的事;
For instance, the achievements of worldly men are wealth and glory and power and luxury and good bodily condition and the begetting of many children and the things that follow upon these;
1:1175
into which the monk, if he falls, is destroyed.
1:1176
但修道士的成就,乃是甘心的貧窮、無名、無權、節制、刻苦以及隨這些而來的事;
But the achievements of the monk are voluntary poverty, obscurity, lack of power, self-control, hardship, and the things that follow upon these;
1:1177
into which the lover of the world, coming against his intention, considers it a great downfall and is often in danger even of having recourse to a noose.
1:1178
(86) Foods were created for two reasons:
1:1179
for the sake of nourishment and of healing.
1:1180
所以,凡離了這些緣故而享用食物的人,因濫用了神所賜為〔正當〕使用之物,便被定為貪饒之人;
Those, then, who partake of them apart from these reasons, as misusing the things given by God for [right] use, are condemned as gluttons;
1:1181
and in the case of all things, misuse is sin.
1:1182
(八十七)謙卑乃是帶著眼淚與勞苦的不住禱告;
(87) Humility is continual prayer with tears and labors;
1:1183
for this, ever calling upon God for help, does not allow one foolishly to trust in one's own power and wisdom, nor to exalt oneself over others—which are grievous diseases of the passion of pride.
1:1184
(八十八)與單純的思念爭戰,使其不致激動情慾,是一回事;
(88) To battle against the bare thought, that it may not stir up the passion, is one thing;
1:1185
and to battle against the impassioned thought, that there may be no consent, is another.
1:1186
But both ways do not allow the thoughts to linger.
1:1187
(八十九)憂愁與記恨相連;
(89) Grief is joined to the remembrance of wrongs;
1:1188
when therefore the mind mirrors the face of a brother with grief, it is plain that it harbors remembrance of wrongs against him.
1:1189
"And the ways of those who remember wrongs lead to death," because everyone who remembers wrongs is a transgressor.
1:1190
(九十)你若對某人懷恨,就當為他禱告,這樣你便止住那情慾的發動,藉著禱告把憂愁從他向你所行之惡的記憶中分離出來;
(90) If you remember a wrong against anyone, pray for him, and you will stay the passion from its motion, separating the grief through prayer from the memory of the evil he did you;
1:1191
and becoming loving and kindly disposed, you utterly do away with the passion from the soul.
1:1192
But if another remembers a wrong against you, be gracious toward him and humble, and conduct yourself well with him, and you will deliver him from the passion.
1:1193
(九十一)你能藉著辛勞止住那嫉妒你之人的憂愁;
(91) You will stay the grief of the one who envies you by labor;
1:1194
for he considers as a misfortune that in you which is envied, and it is not possible to stay it otherwise, unless you conceal it from him.
1:1195
但若那物使許多人得益處、卻使他憂愁,你要忽視哪一邊呢?所以必須使眾人得益處,同時也盡可能不忽視他,並且不被那情慾的惡毒所擄去,免得你不是抵擋那情慾、反倒抵擋那受情慾之苦的人;
But if it benefits many while it grieves him, which side will you disregard? It is necessary, then, to be of benefit to the many, yet not to neglect him as far as possible, nor to be carried away by the malice of the passion, as one who defends himself not against the passion but against the one who suffers from it;
1:1196
but in humility to consider him as surpassing yourself, and at every time and place and circumstance to prefer him.
1:1197
And you can stay your own envy if you rejoice with the one you envy in the things in which he rejoices, and grieve with him in the things in which he grieves, fulfilling the saying of the Apostle:
