1:544
又說:「凡祈求的,就得著;尋找的,就尋見;叩門的,就給他開門」;
and that 'Everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it shall be opened';
1:545
so that both to obtain what is longed for, and to find what is sought, and to come to be within the things desired, lie within our power whenever we will, and depend upon our own resolve.
1:546
與此相應,那相反的觀念也一同確立:就是趨向惡的傾向,同樣不是由外面任何強迫的必然性所生的,乃是揀選惡與惡本身同時發生,惡惟在我們揀選它時才進入存在;
With which there is consistently established also the contrary notion: that the inclination toward the worse likewise arises with no necessity constraining from without, but the choosing of evil comes into being simultaneously with itself, evil then coming into existence when we choose it;
1:547
but evil in itself, according to its own subsistence, apart from choice, is nowhere found to have any existence.
1:548
由此,那本性之主植於人性中的自主自決之能,就清楚顯明了,因為凡事——無論善或惡——都繫於我們自己的抉擇;
From these things the self-governing and self-determining power, which the Lord of nature built into the nature of men, is clearly demonstrated, through the fact that all things — whether good or worse — depend upon our own choice;
1:549
and that the divine judgement, with an incorruptible and just
1:550
裁決隨著我們自己的心志,把那各人恰為自己所預備的,分派給各人;
vote following upon our own purpose, apportions to each that very thing which each happens to have provided for himself;
1:551
正如使徒所說,那些恆心行善、尋求榮耀尊貴的人,就得永生;
to some, as the Apostle says, who by patience in good work seek glory and honour, life eternal;
1:552
but to those who are disobedient to the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and tribulation, and all things that are names of the gloomy recompense.
1:553
For just as accurate mirrors show such reflections of faces as the faces themselves are — bright in the case of those who are radiant, but downcast in the case of those who are gloomy —
1:554
並且,若那映像因原像陷於愁苦而顯得陰沉,也無人會歸咎於鏡子的本質;
and no one would blame the nature of the mirror, if the image should appear gloomy because the original had fallen into dejection;
1:555
so also the just judgement of God is made to correspond to our own dispositions, providing to us from our own resources such things as those which proceed from us.
1:556
他們豈不是這樣待自己造出神來麼?那沉溺於奢華宴樂的財主,不憐憫那躺臥在他門口受苦的窮人;因此他向自己斷絕了憐憫,及至他懇求蒙憐憫,卻不蒙垂聽;
did they make the Deity toward themselves? The rich man, dissolved in luxuries, did not show mercy to the poor man who lay in wretchedness at his gate; therefore he cuts off mercy from himself, begging to be shown mercy and not being heard;
1:557
not because one drop would have brought loss to the great fountain of paradise, but because the drop of mercy has no admixture with harshness.
1:558
光與暗有甚麼相通呢?祂說:「人種的是甚麼,收的也是甚麼」;
For what fellowship has light with darkness? 'Whatsoever a man sows,' He says, 'that shall he also reap';
1:559
因為順著肉體撒種的,必從肉體收敗壞;
for he who sows to the flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption;
1:560
but he who sows to the spirit shall of the spirit reap life eternal.
1:561
我認為,那撒種所指的乃是人的自由抉擇;
The sowing, I think, is the human free will;
1:562
and the harvest is the recompense given in return for that free choice.
1:563
對於那些揀選了這樣撒種的人,善的麥穗必是豐盛的;
Abundant is the ear of good things for those who have chosen such a sowing;
1:564
but toilsome is the gathering of thorns for those who cast thorny seeds into life.
1:565
For each must by all means reap that very thing which he has sown, and it cannot be otherwise.
1:566
'Blessed are the merciful, for they themselves shall obtain mercy.'
1:567
有什麼人的言語能徹底探究這句話中所蘊含之意義的深邃呢?因為這話語那絕對而不加限定的性質,賜給我們比所說的更多可供探究之處,就是:它並未附加說明,究竟該當向哪些人施行憐恤才是合宜的;
What human discourse could fully traverse the depth of the meanings that lie within this saying? For the absolute and undefined character of the utterance gives us something more than what is spoken to inquire into, namely, that it does not add who those are toward whom it is fitting that mercy should be active;
1:568
but says simply that 'Blessed are the merciful.'
1:569
For perhaps by what has been said the Word hints to us something of this kind: that upon the blessed mourning there should follow the disposition of mercy.
1:570
因為在那裡,那在今生度日於哀慟中的人,也被稱為有福的;
For there too he was counted blessed who passed the life here in mourning;
1:571
and here it seems to me that the Word intimates the same teaching.
1:572
正如我們對他人的不幸有所感觸,每當我們所親近的人遭遇某些非所願的憂患時——或是被逐出祖傳的家業,或是從船難中赤身得救,或是落入海盜、強盜之手,或是由自由之身變為奴隸,或是由富足之境淪為俘虜,或是遭遇了其他類此的災禍——這些人先前原是被看作在某種順境中度日的;
For just as we are moved at the misfortunes of others, whenever some of those dear to us are involved in some unwished-for sorrows—whether cast out from their ancestral home, or saved naked from a shipwreck, or fallen into the hands of pirates or robbers, or made slaves from being free, or captives from being prosperous, or having received in exchange some other such evil—those who until then were reckoned to be passing their life in some good fortune;
1:573
just as, then, in these cases a certain painful fellow-feeling arises in our souls,
1:574
so perhaps it would be far more opportune to devote such a reflection to ourselves, on account of the unworthy plight into which our own life has been cast.
1:575
因為每當我們思量:我們所墮落而出的那華美家園究竟是何等的;
For whenever we reckon what was that splendid home of ours from which we have fallen;
1:576
我們如何落入了強盜的手中;
how we have come under the robbers;
1:577
我們如何沉淪於此生的深淵之中,被剝奪淨盡;
how, sunk into the deep of this present life, we have been stripped bare;
1:578
我們如何招來了何等眾多的主人,來取代我們原有的自由與自主的生活;
what and how many masters we have drawn upon ourselves in place of our freedom and self-governed manner of living;
1:579
我們如何以死亡與朽壞截斷了生命中那有福的部分;
how we have cut short the blessed part of life with death and corruption;
1:580
那麼,倘若我們將這些思慮存於心中,我們的憐恤還可能只忙於他人的不幸,而不是那心靈自身陷入可憐的境地嗎——當它思量它從前所擁有的,以及它所墮落而失去的一切之時?因為還有什麼比我們這被擄的光景更為可憐呢?我們原可享受樂園中的歡愉,如今在此生所承受的產業,卻是這患病而勞苦的地方;
is it then possible, if we take these thoughts to heart, for our mercy to be occupied with the misfortunes of others, and not rather for the soul itself to be pitiably disposed, as it reckons both what it once possessed and from what things it has fallen? For what is more pitiable than this captivity of ours? Instead of the delight in paradise, we have been allotted in life this sickly and toilsome place;
1:581
我們原可享有那無情慾之苦的境界,如今卻承受了諸般情慾所帶來的無數禍殃;
instead of that freedom from suffering, we have received the countless deaths of the passions;
1:582
我們原可享有那崇高的生活與同眾天使一起的生命,如今卻被定罪,要與地上的野獸同住;
instead of that lofty manner of living and life together with the angels, we have been condemned to dwell with the beasts of the earth;
1:583
既已用那如天使般、無情慾之苦的生命換取了獸性的生活,誰能輕易地一一數盡我們生命中那些苦毒的暴君,那些狂怒而兇殘的主人呢?忿怒乃是一個苦毒的主人;
having exchanged the angelic and passionless life for the brutish one, who could easily comprise in number the bitter tyrants of our life, the raging and savage masters? A bitter master is anger;
1:584
仇恨,那伴隨驕傲而來的情慾,乃是一個狂怒而兇殘的暴君;
hatred, the passion that goes with arrogance, is a raging and savage tyrant;
1:585
而那放縱無度的思慮,則彷彿以買來的奴隸為樂,將人性奴役於那些屬情慾、不潔的差役之中;
and undisciplined reasoning revels as though over purchased slaves, when it enslaves nature to the passionate and impure services;
1:586
至於貪婪的暴政,它豈不勝過一切苦毒的極致?它奴役了那可憐的心靈,不斷逼迫它去滿足其永不饜足的慾望,時常領受,卻永不飽足;
and as for the tyranny of covetousness, what excess of bitterness does it not surpass? Having enslaved the wretched soul, it constantly compels it to fill its insatiable desires, always receiving and never being filled;
1:587
如同某頭多頭的野獸,藉著無數的口將食物送入其填不滿的肚腹之中;
like some many-headed beast, passing on nourishment through countless mouths to its unfillable belly;
1:588
對它而言,獲利之心從無饜足之時;
for which there is never any satiety of gaining;
1:589
but what is always taken becomes matter and fuel for the desire of yet more.
1:590
It is the same as what those suffer who are deranged from madness, from whom the very excess of the evil has taken away even the perception of what they suffer.
1:591
If, then, someone should come to know himself—what sort he formerly was, and what sort he is at present—
1:592
and Solomon too says somewhere that 'Those who know themselves are wise'—
1:593
such a one will never cease from showing mercy, and upon such a disposition of the soul the divine mercy also, as is fitting, will follow.
1:594
'Blessed are the merciful, for they themselves shall obtain mercy.'
1:595
For in this the term makes itself plain, as though one were to say, 'It is a blessed thing to take care of bodily health.'
1:596
因為那照顧身體的人,自己必得健康地活著;
For the one who takes care will himself live in health;
1:597
照樣,憐恤人的人也被稱為有福的,因為那憐恤所結的果子,成了憐恤人者自己的產業;
so the merciful one is counted blessed, because the fruit of mercy becomes the merciful person's own possession;
1:598
whether according to the meaning now found by us,
1:599
or according to the one examined before—I mean the one that shows the soul's compassion in the misfortunes of others—
1:600
因為二者同樣都是善的:既是以所說的方式憐恤自己,也是與鄰舍的苦難一同受苦;
for each is alike a good thing: both to have mercy on oneself in the manner spoken of, and to suffer together with the calamities of one's neighbors;
1:601
因為神審判的公義,將人向那些在他之下者所懷的心意,顯明在那高於他的權能之上;
because the justice of the divine judgment displays the disposition shown toward those beneath a man upon the authority that is above him;
1:602
so that in a certain way a man becomes his own judge, casting the vote for himself in the judgment upon his subordinates.
1:603
既然如此,我們已經信了——並且是真實地信了——全人類的性情都要站在基督的審判台前,好叫各人照著他藉身體所行的,或善或惡,都要受報應;
Since, then, it has been believed—and truly believed—that all human nature will be set before the judgment-seat of Christ, that each may receive the things done through the body, according to what he has done, whether good or evil;
1:604
perhaps it is even bold to say it,
1:605
whether it is possible to grasp by reasoning the things unspeakable and unseen, and already to perceive the blessedness of the recompense given to those who are shown mercy.
1:606
For the goodwill that arises in souls toward those who display mercy remains, throughout life, as is fitting, forever with those who have partaken of the grace.
1:607
What, then, is likely at the time of the examination, if the benefactor should be recognized by those who have been well treated—how will he be disposed in soul, being praised before God amid the grateful voices of all creation? Will he stand in need of any other blessing, he who is proclaimed for his noble deeds in so great a theater? For that those who have been well treated will be present, the voice of the Gospel teaches, in the King's judgment upon the righteous and upon the sinners.
1:608
For toward both he uses the demonstrative, as though by a finger making known what lies above:
1:609
'Inasmuch as ye did it to one of these the least of my brethren.'
1:610
For the saying 'of these' points to the presence of those who have been well treated.
1:611
Now let him speak to me who prefers the lifeless matter of riches to the blessedness to come:
1:612
什麼樣的金光能與此相比?寶石的光輝算得什麼?衣飾的華美,怎能與那盼望所擺在我們面前的美善之物相比?當那受造之物的君王向人性顯明自己,威嚴地高坐在崇高的寶座上;當那無數萬千的天使被眾人看見環繞在他四圍;並且當那不可言傳的諸天之國臨到眾人眼前,而在對面,那可畏的刑罰之所又再次顯露出來之時;
What splendor of gold is such as this? What are the gleams of precious stones? What adornment of garments is such as that good thing which hope sets before us? When the King of creation reveals himself to human nature, seated in majesty upon the lofty throne; when the innumerable myriads of angels are seen about him; and indeed when the unutterable kingdom of the heavens comes before the eyes of all, and again, on the opposite side, the fearful places of punishment are displayed;
1:613
而在這一切之中,全人類的性情——從起初創造之時直到萬有終結之時所有存在過的人——都懸在半空,處於對將來之事的懼怕與盼望之中,屢屢因那向兩邊等候著的結局而戰兢;
and in the midst of these all human nature—of those who have come into being from the first creation up to the consummation of all things—stands suspended in fear and hope of the things to come, often trembling at the outcome that awaits it on either side;
1:614
而當那些憑著良善的良心度日的人,仍對將來之事心存疑懼,每逢他們看見別人被那邪惡的良心,彷彿被某個劊子手一般,拖入那陰森的黑暗之中的時候,情形又當如何呢?倘若這人在他所善待之人那吉慶而感恩的聲音中,因著他的作為,坦然無懼、滿有光彩地被帶到審判者面前;
and when those who have lived with a good conscience are yet in doubt about the future, whenever they see others dragged by an evil conscience into that gloomy darkness, as though by some executioner? If this man, amid the auspicious and grateful voices of those whom he has well treated, be brought before the Judge, radiant with confidence on account of his works;
1:615
而那另一人,既將那與他一同埋藏於隱密之處的財物看為更寶貴的,便被倒栽著拖入那幽暗的火中;
while that other, having judged the matter buried away with him in secret to be more precious, be dragged headlong into the dark fire;
1:616
with all who in this life have had experience of him bringing forward against him his relentlessness and savagery, and saying:
1:617
「你要回想,你生前享過你的福了;
'Remember that thou didst receive thy good things in thy lifetime;
1:618
你將憐恤與你自己一同關鎖在財富的堡壘之中,把慈憐撇在地上;
thou didst shut up mercy together with thyself in the strongholds of wealth, and didst leave compassion behind upon the earth;
1:619
你未曾把愛人之心帶到此生之外;
thou didst not carry over to the life here thy love of mankind;
1:620
你尋不著你所未曾存留的;
thou findest not what thou didst not lay up;
1:621
你收不著你所未曾撒下的;
thou gatherest not what thou didst not scatter;
1:622
你收割不著你所未曾撒種的;
thou reapest not the seeds thou didst not cast down;
1:623
你的收成正與你的撒種相稱;
worthy of thy sowing is thy harvest;
1:624
你撒了苦毒,就收割那禾捆吧;
thou didst sow bitterness, reap the sheaves;
1:625
你尊崇了無憐憫,就得著你所喜愛的吧;
thou didst honor mercilessness, have what thou didst love;
1:626
thou didst overlook the afflicted, thou shalt be overlooked as thou perishest.'
1:627
「你逃避了憐恤,憐恤也必逃避你;
'Thou didst flee mercy, mercy shall flee thee;
1:628
thou didst abhor the poor, he who became poor for thy sake shall abhor thee.'
1:629
倘若這些以及類此的話都說了出來,那時金子在哪裡呢?華美的器皿在哪裡呢?那藉印記加在財寶上的保障在哪裡呢?那為夜間看守而配置的狗、那為防備陰謀者所預備的兵器又在哪裡呢?賬簿上所記錄的憑據又在哪裡呢?這一切在那哀哭切齒之前算得什麼呢?誰能照亮那黑暗呢?誰能熄滅那火焰呢?誰能使那不死的蟲轉離呢?弟兄們,我們就當把主的話存記在心,這話用寥寥數語,就將論到將來之事的如此多的教訓賜給了我們;
If these and such things be said, where then is the gold? Where the splendid vessels? Where the security laid upon the treasures by means of the seals? Where the dogs stationed for the night-watches, and the array of weapons against those who plot against you? The record written down in the books? What are these things in the face of the weeping and the gnashing of teeth? Who will illumine the darkness? Who will quench the flame? Who will turn back the unending worm? Let us then, brethren, take to heart the voice of the Lord, which in few words instructs us so greatly concerning the things to come;
1:630
and let us become merciful, that thereby we may become blessed, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory and the might unto the ages of ages.
1:631
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
1:632
What is likely to befall those who, from some lofty crag, bend down over an immense sea — this is what my mind has experienced from the sublime voice of the Lord, as though from the summit of a mountain, when it looks down into the impassable depth of these thoughts.
1:633
正如在許多濱海之處,可以看見一座被劈為兩半的山,沿著臨海的那一側,從山頂到深處被削成一條直線,而在其上緣有一塊突出的岩尖,向著深淵傾探;
For just as one may see, in many coastal places, a mountain cleft in two, along the seaward side shorn away in a straight line from summit down into the deep, and at its upper edge some jutting peak leans out toward the abyss;
1:634
the experience, then, that would likely befall one gazing from such a lookout, from a great height down into the sea lying in the depth below —
1:635
even so does my soul now grow dizzy, suspended aloft within this great utterance of the Lord:
1:636
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
1:637
God is set before those who have cleansed their heart, as the spectacle to be beheld.
1:638
「從來沒有人見過神」,正如那偉大的約翰所說;
No one has ever seen God, as John the great one says;
1:639
and Paul, lofty in mind, casts his vote likewise, saying:
1:640
that He is one whom no man has seen, nor can see.
1:641
This is that smooth and sheer rock which offers upon itself no foothold for the mind's conceptions — the rock which Moses likewise declared inaccessible to the doctrines of his own understanding, so that in no way can our mind draw near, since every apprehension is scraped away by the negation.
1:642
For it says: There is no one who shall see the Lord and live.
1:643
Yet surely eternal life is precisely this: to see God.
1:644
But this the pillars of the faith — John and Paul and Moses — declare to be impossible.
1:645
你看見那眩暈了嗎?靈魂被拖入這話語中所默觀之事的深處。若神就是生命,那麼未曾看見祂的人,就未曾看見生命;
Do you see the dizziness into which the soul is dragged down toward the depth of what is contemplated in the saying? If God is life, then he who has not seen Him does not behold life;
1:646
yet that it is not possible to see God, the God-bearing prophets and apostles testify.
1:647
In what, then, does hope for men come to stand? But the Lord upholds the hope that is falling.
1:648
Just as He did in the case of Peter, when he was in danger of sinking, again setting him upon the firm and resisting surface of the water.
1:649
If, then, the hand of the Word should come upon us also, and, when we are tossing unsteadily in the depth of these contemplations, should set us upon another thought, we shall be beyond fear, having laid firm hold on the Word that leads us by the hand.
1:650
...the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
1:651
The promise, then, is of such magnitude as to surpass the very highest limit of blessedness.
1:652
因為在如此的美善之後,人還能渴望什麼別的呢?既然他在所看見的之中已擁有萬有?因為按聖經慣用的說法,「看見」與「擁有」意義相同;
For what else could anyone desire, after so great a good, when he possesses all things in what he has beheld? For in the customary usage of Scripture, to see means the same as to have;
1:653
例如那句:「願你得見耶路撒冷的美福」,其中的「見」乃是「願你尋得」之意;
as in the passage, Mayest thou see the good things of Jerusalem, where the word signifies instead 'Mayest thou find';
1:654
and in, Let the impious man be taken away, that he may not see the glory of the Lord, where by 'not seeing' the prophet makes clear 'not partaking'.
1:655
Therefore he who has seen God has, through the seeing, gained everything that is reckoned in the catalogue of good things: unending life, everlasting incorruption, immortal blessedness, a kingdom without end, joy that never ceases, the true light, the spiritual and sweet voice, the unapproachable glory, perpetual exultation, and every good.
1:656
That, then, which is set before us in hope in the promise of blessedness, is of such a kind and of such greatness.
1:657
But since the manner of the seeing has been shown to be through becoming pure in heart,
1:658
in this too my mind again grows dizzy, lest perhaps purity of heart be among the things impossible and surpassing our nature.
1:659
For if it is through this that God is seen —
1:660
yet Moses and Paul did not see, and declared that neither He himself nor any other could be seen — then that which is now set before us by the Word in the beatitude seems to be something impossible.
1:661
What profit, then, is there for us in knowing how God is seen, if the possibility of it is not present to our thought? For such a thing is like this: as if someone were to say that it is blessed to be in heaven,
1:662
since there one will behold what is not seen in this life. For if there were some contrivance for the journey up to heaven set forth in advance by the discourse,
1:663
then to learn that it is a blessed thing to be in that place would be useful to the hearers.
1:664
But so long as the ascent remains impossible, what profit does the knowledge of the heavenly blessedness bring — save only to grieve those who have learned of what good things we are deprived because of the impossibility of the ascent? Does the Lord, then, command something beyond our nature, and by the grandeur of His injunction overstep the measures of human power? These things are not so.
1:665
For He does not command those to become winged in whom He implanted no wing, nor those to live under water to whom He allotted a life on dry land.
1:666
If, then, in all other matters the law is suited to the power of those who receive it, and forces nothing beyond nature,
1:667
then by consistent reasoning we shall certainly understand this also: that what is shown forth through the beatitude is not beyond hope.
1:668
But that John too, and Paul, and Moses, and any other who is of their rank, have not fallen away from this lofty blessedness which comes from seeing God; nor has he who said, There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the righteous judge will render to me; nor he who reclined upon the breast of Jesus; nor he who heard from the divine voice, I have known thee above all.
1:669
那麼,若那些人——關於他們已宣告過,對神的領會是超乎其能力的——無疑是有福的;
If, then, those men — concerning whom it has been proclaimed that the comprehension of God is beyond their power — are not doubted to be blessed;
1:670
而福分在於看見神,且這是從在心裡成為潔淨而來;
and blessedness consists in seeing God, and this comes from becoming pure in heart;
1:671
then purity of heart, through which it is possible to become blessed, is not impossible.
1:672
神聖的本性,就其自身而論,無論按其本質是什麼,都超越一切能領會的概念,對於一切臆測的觀念都是不可接近、不能靠近的;人至今尚未尋得任何能力,可以領會那不可捉摸之物;
The divine nature, in itself, whatever it may be according to its essence, transcends every comprehending conception, being inaccessible and unapproachable to conjectural notions; and no power has yet been discovered by men for the comprehension of what is beyond apprehension;
1:673
也未曾設想出任何能領會那些不可能之事的門徑;
nor has any comprehending approach to those impossibilities been devised;
1:674
no trace of a comprehending conception has been signified, in the knowledge, to those who have gone before in this life, of the matter that is beyond knowledge.
1:675
Yet, being such according to His nature — He who is above all nature — the invisible and uncircumscribed One is nevertheless both seen and comprehended in another way.
1:676
And the modes of such comprehension are many.
1:677
For it is possible, through the wisdom that appears in the universe, to behold conjecturally Him who has made all things in wisdom.
1:678
Just as in the case of human works of craftsmanship, the maker of the object set before us is in a manner beheld by the mind, having deposited his skill in his work.
1:679
Yet it is not the nature of the craftsman that is seen, but only the technical knowledge which the artisan deposited in the work.
1:680
So too, when we look upon the order in creation, we form for ourselves a notion not of the essence, but of the wisdom of Him who has made all things wisely.
1:681
而若我們思量我們自己生命的緣由——那並非出於必然,乃是出於美善的旨意,祂才前來造人——那麼藉著這種方式,我們又說我們已看見了神,因我們進入了對祂良善、而非對祂本質的認識;
And if we reckon up the cause of our own life — that it was not out of necessity, but out of a good purpose, that He came to create man — again through this mode too we say that we have beheld God, having come into the perception of His goodness, not of His essence;
1:682
so likewise all other things which lead our thought up to what is better and higher — such things we call comprehension of God, each of the lofty conceptions bringing God before our sight.
1:683
For power, and purity, and constancy, and freedom from admixture with the contrary, and all such things, imprint upon our souls the image of a certain divine and lofty conception.
1:684
因此,藉著上述所言,就顯明了主如何說的是真理,就是應許那些有清潔之心的人必得見神;
Therefore it is shown, through what has been said, how the Lord speaks truly in promising that God shall be seen by those who have a pure heart;
1:685
and how Paul does not lie in declaring, through his own words, that no one has seen God nor can see Him.
1:686
For He who is invisible by nature becomes visible in His energies, being beheld in certain things that are about Him.
1:687
但這福分的意涵並不僅僅著眼於此——即從某種作為可以推想出那運行者的性質;
But the mind of the beatitude does not look only to this — that from some operation it is possible to reason out the character of Him who operates;
1:688
for perhaps even the wise men of this age might, through the harmonious ordering of the world, attain the comprehension of the transcendent wisdom and power.
1:689
但在我看來,這福分那崇高的宏偉,向那些能領受之人提示了另一種勸勉,好叫他們得見所渴慕的;
But it seems to me that the sublime greatness of the beatitude suggests other counsel to those who are able to receive it, so that they may behold what is longed for;
1:690
and the thought that has occurred to me will be made clear through examples.
1:691
身體的健康,就人生而言是一件好事;
Health of the body is a good thing according to human life;
1:692
but it is blessed not merely to know the account of health, but to live in health.
1:693
For if someone, while reciting praises of health, were to choose unwholesome and ill-humoured food,
1:694
當他被眾疾病所磨損時,他從那些健康的頌詞中得了什麼益處呢?那麼,我們也照樣來理解眼前這話:主並不是說知道一些關於神的事乃是有福的;
what benefit did he gain from the praises of health, while being worn down by sicknesses? So then let us understand the present saying too in this way: that the Lord does not say it is blessed to know something about God;
1:695
but rather to have God within oneself.
1:696
For blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
1:697
因為在我看來,祂並非把神當作某種對面而立的景象,擺在那已潔淨其靈魂之眼的人面前;
For it does not seem to me that He sets God before the one who has purified the eye of his soul as some spectacle facing him;
1:698
毋寧說,這話那崇高的宏偉,或許正是向我們提示了這事——就是那言語在別處向他人更明白地陳明的,即說「神的國就在你們裡面」;
but rather this, perhaps, is what the sublime greatness of the saying suggests to us — that which the discourse elsewhere sets forth more plainly to others, when it says that the kingdom of God is within you;
1:699
so that we may be taught that he who has cleansed his own heart from every affection of creation and passionate disposition, beholds within his own beauty the image of the divine nature.
1:700
And it seems to me that in the few words which He spoke, the Word contains counsel of this kind:
1:701
O men, as many of you as have any longing for the contemplation of that which is truly good, when you hear that the divine majesty is exalted above the heavens, that its glory is beyond interpretation, its beauty beyond utterance, and its nature beyond containing,
1:702
do not fall into despair, as though it were impossible to behold that which you desire.
1:703
For the measure of the apprehension of God that lies within your capacity is within yourself.
1:704
For thus did He who formed you at once endow your nature with such a good.
1:705
For God imprinted upon your fashioning the copies of the good things of His own nature, having pre-stamped them as it were upon wax with the figure of an engraving.
1:706
but [evil,] being poured around it, rendered the good useless for you, hidden away beneath shameful coverings.
1:707
If, then, by careful living you should again wash away the filth that has been overlaid upon your heart, the God-like beauty will shine forth in you.
1:708
正如鐵所常有的情形:當它藉著磨石去盡了鏽垢,那不久前還是烏黑的,如今卻向著太陽閃耀出光芒,發出燦爛的光輝;
Just as it is wont to happen with iron: when by the whetstone it has been stripped bare of rust, that which a little before was black now flashes with certain rays toward the sun and gives off gleams of light;
1:709
so also the inner man, whom the Lord calls the heart, when he has scraped off the rusty filth that had bloomed upon his form through the mould of the evil one, will again take up the likeness to the Archetype, and will be good.
1:710
For that which is like the good is in every way good.
1:711
所以,那觀看自己的人,就在自己裡面看見了他所渴慕的;
Therefore he who beholds himself beholds within himself that which he desires;
1:712
and thus he who is pure in heart becomes blessed, because, looking toward his own purity, he beholds in the image the Archetype.
1:713
因為正如那些在鏡中觀看太陽的人,雖然沒有定睛仰望天空本身,卻在鏡子的光輝中看見太陽,並不亞於那些直望太陽本體的人;
For just as those who behold the sun in a mirror, even though they do not gaze steadily up at the very heaven, see the sun in the gleam of the mirror no less than those who look upon the sun's very disk;
1:714
so too, he says, do you also, even though you are too weak to apprehend the light, if you run back to the grace of the image implanted in you from the beginning, you have within yourselves that which you seek.
1:715
For purity, freedom from passion, and estrangement from every evil—this is the Godhead.
1:716
If, then, these things are in you, God is assuredly in you.
1:717
When, therefore, the reasoning within you is unmixed with any evil, free from passion, and separated from every defilement, blessed are you in your keen sight, because, having been cleansed, you have apprehended that which is unseeable to the unpurified; and, the material mist having been removed from the eyes of the soul, in the pure clear air of the heart you behold with far-shining vision the blessed spectacle.
1:718
And what is this? Purity, sanctification, simplicity, and all such things—the light-bearing radiances of the divine nature, through which God is seen.
1:719
But that these things are so, we do not doubt, from what has been said.
1:720
Yet our discourse still sees the difficulty raised at the outset standing in the same perplexity.
1:721
For just as one who has come to be in heaven partakes of the heavenly wonders,
1:722
然而上升的方式卻是難以達成的——以致我們所公認的種種對我們毫無益處;
yet the manner of the ascent is impracticable—so that none of the things agreed upon does us any profit;
1:723
照樣,從潔淨了心便得成為有福的,這是毋庸置疑的;
so likewise it is not doubted that, from the purifying of the heart, one becomes blessed;
1:724
but how one might cleanse it of the things that have defiled it seems to be plainly as difficult as the ascent to heaven.
1:725
What ladder of Jacob, then? What fiery chariot shall be found, like that which raised the prophet Elijah up to heaven, by which our heart, lifted up toward the wonders on high, may shake off this earthly weight? For if one should consider the necessary passions of the soul, he will think the departure from the evils yoked to us to be impossible and impracticable.
1:726
Straightway our coming-into-being begins from passion, and through passion our growth advances, and into passion our life comes to its end; and evil has somehow been commingled with our nature through those who from the beginning admitted the passion—through those who by disobedience settled the disease within.
1:727
正如藉著每一物種中所生後代的相繼傳承,眾生物的本性一同延續下去,以致所生出的,按著本性的原則,與那生出它的乃是同類;
And just as, by the succession of those born in each species, the nature of living creatures passes through together, so that that which is born is, according to the principle of nature, the same as that from which it was born;
1:728
so man is born from man, one subject to passion from one subject to passion, a sinner from a sinner.
1:729
Thus in a certain way sin co-subsists with those who come into being, being born together with them and growing together with them, and coming to its end together with the limit of life.
1:730
But that virtue is hard for us to attain, achieved with difficulty only through countless sweats and toils, through diligence and labor, we have been taught in many places by the divine Scripture, having heard that the road of the kingdom is straitened and passes through a narrow way, whereas the road that leads life through evil to destruction is broad and downhill and easily run.
1:731
Yet Scripture did not define the lofty life as altogether impracticable—the same Scripture which set forth in the sacred books the wondrous deeds of so many men.
1:732
But since the meaning is twofold in the promise of seeing God—
1:733
〔其一是關乎〕那超越一切的本性,另一則是關乎藉著生活的清潔而與祂相融;
[the one concerning] a nature transcendent, and the other concerning being commingled with Him through purity of life;
1:734
眾聖徒的聲音判定前一種的認知乃是無法達成的;
the voice of the saints defines the former kind of apprehension to be impracticable;
1:735
but the Lord promises the second to human nature through the present teaching, when He says, 'Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.'
1:736
And how it is possible to become pure, this you may learn through nearly the whole of the evangelical teaching.
1:737
For if you run over the precepts that follow, you will find the cleansing of the heart made clear.
1:738
For having divided evil into two—that which subsists through deeds, and that which subsists in thoughts—He first, through the ancient law, chastised the injustice made manifest through deeds; but now He has caused the law to look toward the other kind of sin, not punishing the wicked deed, but making provision that it should not even have its beginning.
1:739
For to root out evil from the will is far more excellent than to make one's life clear of wicked deeds.
1:740
And since evil is manifold and of many kinds, He set over against each of the forbidden things its own remedy through the precepts.
1:741
And since the sickness of anger is, for the most part, ready at hand throughout the whole of life, He begins the remedy from that which more especially prevails, laying down freedom from anger as the first of His laws.
1:742
You were taught, He says, by the more ancient law, 'You shall not kill'; now learn to separate from the soul the anger against those of your own kind.
1:743
因為祂並沒有完全禁絕忿怒;
For He did not forbid anger altogether;
1:744
for it is possible sometimes even to use such an impulse of the soul for good; but to be angry with one's brother at some time for no good end—this the precept extinguished.
1:745
'For everyone who is angry with his brother without cause . . .'
