1:746
For the addition of 'without cause' shows the seasonable use of wrath is often fitting, whenever the passion boils up for the chastisement of sin.
1:747
This kind of anger the word of Scripture testified of beforehand in the case of Phinehas, when by the slaying of the transgressors he propitiated the threat of God that had been stirred up against the people.
1:748
Again He passes with His remedy to the things offended in through pleasure, and takes away from the heart the improper desire of adultery through the precept.
1:749
So too you will find the Lord in what follows setting all things right one by one, standing firm with His legislations against each of the forms of evil.
1:750
He forbids the beginning of unjust hands, in that He does not even allow one to defend oneself.
1:751
He sets a bound beyond the passion of covetousness, by commanding that one strip oneself for him who takes away, and hand over even what is left.
1:752
He heals cowardice, being commanded to hold death in contempt. And in short, through each of the precepts you will find, after the manner of a plough, the ploughing word digging up the wicked roots of sins from the depth of our heart, through which it is possible to be cleansed of the thorny fruitfulness.
1:753
Therefore through both He benefits our nature: both in the things wherein He promises the good, and in the things wherein He sets before us the teaching toward that which lies before us.
1:754
But if the pursuit of good things seems to you toilsome, compare it with the opposite life, and you will find how much more toilsome evil is—if you look not to the present, but to what comes after.
1:755
因為那聽見了地獄的人,就不再需要藉任何勞苦或殷勤才能與罪中之樂分離;
For he who has heard of Gehenna will no longer be separated from the pleasures of sin by any toil or diligence;
1:756
but the fear alone, coming to be in his reasonings, will suffice to banish the passions.
1:757
Rather, it is well, having apprehended that which is understood together with what is passed over in silence, thereby to take a more vehement desire.
1:758
因為清心的人若是有福的,那心思受了玷污的人就全然是可憐的了;
For if blessed are the pure in heart, altogether pitiable are those who are defiled in mind;
1:759
because they look toward the countenance of the adversary.
1:760
And if the divine character itself is imprinted upon the life lived according to virtue, it is clear that the life lived according to vice becomes the form and countenance of the adversary.
1:761
But indeed, if according to various conceptions God is named after each of the things conceived as good—light, and life, and incorruption, and whatever is of such a kind—
1:762
[then the adversary is named after] death and corruption, and whatever is of the same kind and family as these.
1:763
Therefore, having learned by what means both vice and the life according to virtue are given form, and authority for either of these lying before us according to the self-determination of the will, let us flee the form of the devil, let us put off the wicked mask, let us take up the divine image, let us become pure in heart, that we may become blessed, when the divine image has been formed in us through a pure manner of life, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory unto the ages of ages.
1:764
'For they shall be called sons of God.'
1:765
至於那見證的聖幕,就是立法者按著神在山上向他所指示的樣式為以色列人所造的,凡在那圍幔之內所包圍的,件件都是聖潔神聖的;
Of the sacred tabernacle of the testimony, which the lawgiver constructed for the Israelites according to the pattern shown him by God on the mountain, all things, each and every one, were holy and sacred—as many as were enclosed within by the surrounding hangings;
1:766
然而其中最內裡的部分卻是不可進入、不可踐踏的,被稱為至聖所;
but the innermost part among these was inaccessible and untrodden, called the Holy of Holies;
1:767
我想,這樣加重語氣的名稱造法顯明:那地方所分有的聖潔,並非與其他地方等量齊觀;
this intensifying coinage of a name showing, I think, that that place too did not partake of holiness on an equal footing with the others;
1:768
but that, by as much as the consecrated and holy differed from the common and profane, by so much was that inaccessible place more sacred and purer than the holy things around it.
1:769
I think, then, that in the same manner, of the beatitudes here set before us on this mountain, all things, each and every one, are sacred and holy—
1:770
就是那神聖的道在前面所建立的一切;
as many as the divine word constructed in what went before;
1:771
But that which now lies before our contemplation is, in truth, a sanctuary unapproachable, the very Holy of Holies.
1:772
For if to see God has no surpassing measure of good beyond it, then to become a son of God is assuredly above all felicity.
1:773
For what invention of words, what significance drawn from names, could comprehend the gift of so great a promise? Whatever one may conceive in the mind, that which is signified is assuredly beyond it.
1:774
If you should call good, or precious, or lofty that which is set before us through the promise of this beatitude, that which is signified is more than the impression conveyed by such names.
1:775
The attainment surpasses prayer, the gift surpasses hope, the grace surpasses nature.
1:776
人若與神的本性相比,算得甚麼呢?我當引用眾聖徒中哪一位的話,藉以顯出人的卑微呢?照亞伯拉罕所說,人不過是塵土與灰燼;
What is man when judged in relation to the divine nature? Whose word among the saints shall I cite, by which the human is set at naught? According to Abraham, earth and ashes;
1:777
因為有一位說:「凡有血氣的盡都如草」;
for one says, 'All flesh is grass';
1:778
照傳道者所說,乃是虛空;
according to Ecclesiastes, vanity;
1:779
according to Paul, wretchedness.
1:780
For by the names with which the Apostle designated himself, by these the whole of humanity is bewailed.
1:781
但神又是甚麼呢?我怎能述說祂的所是——祂是眼不能見、耳不能容、心不能領會的?我當用怎樣的言語宣告那本性?我當在所認識的事物中,尋得甚麼可作這至善者的範例呢?我當創出怎樣的新語,來表達那不可言喻、不能宣說的呢?我曾聽見神所默示的聖經,論及那超乎萬有之本性的偉大之事;
But what of God? How shall I tell what He is, whom it is not possible to see, nor for the hearing to contain, nor for the heart to grasp? By what utterances shall I proclaim that nature? What example of this Good shall I find among things known? What new words shall I coin to signify the ineffable and unutterable? I have heard the God-inspired Scripture setting forth great things concerning the transcendent nature;
1:782
but what are these compared with the nature itself? For as much as I was able to receive, so much did the word declare, not as much as that which is signified truly is.
1:783
正如那些呼吸空氣的人,各人按自己裡面的容量,一人吸入較多、另一人吸入較少的空氣;
For just as those who breathe the air, each according to the capacity within himself, one takes in more, another less of the air;
1:784
然而那把大量空氣納入自己裡面的人,並未把整個元素都收於己內,就連他也不過是從全體中取用了他所能取的,而那全體仍是全體;
yet he who has held much air within himself has not made the whole element to be within him, but even he took from the whole as much as he was able, and it remains the whole;
1:785
照樣,聖經的神學道理,就是那些被聖靈感動的人向我們所陳明的,若按我們心思的量度而言,是崇高、偉大、超乎一切之大的;
so also the theologies of Holy Scripture, set forth to us by those borne along in inspiration by the Holy Spirit, are, in relation to the measure of our understanding, exalted and great and beyond all magnitude;
1:786
yet they do not attain to the true magnitude,
1:787
就是那真正存在者的偉大。因為那先知的話語在這等崇高的宣告中,所顯示的不過是神之運行的一部分;
of Him who truly is. For it was but a part of the divine energy that the prophetic word displayed in such lofty declarations;
1:788
but the very power from which the energy proceeds—not to speak of the nature from which the power proceeds—it neither spoke of nor attempted to speak of.
1:789
Nay, it even rebukes in its word those who liken the Divine by means of certain conjectures, treating of this matter as though from the person of God:
1:790
'To whom have you likened Me?' says the Lord.
1:791
傳道者也在他自己的話中提出同樣的勸勉:「你在神面前不可冒失開口;
The like counsel Ecclesiastes also lays down in his own words: 'Be not hasty to utter a word before the face of God;
1:792
因為神在天上,你在地下」;
for God is in heaven above, and you are on the earth below';
1:793
showing, I think, through the distance of the elements from one another, by how great a measure the divine nature is exalted above earthly reasonings.
1:794
Yet with this thing, so great and of such kind, which it is not possible to see, nor to hear, nor to reckon, man—who has been reckoned as nothing among existing things, the ashes, the grass, the vanity—is made kin, being taken up by the God of all into the rank of a son.
1:795
What can be found worthy of thanksgiving for this grace? What utterance, what thought, what movement of reflection, by which one might hymn the surpassing measure of the grace? Man goes forth beyond his own nature: from mortal becoming immortal, from perishable incorruptible, from ephemeral eternal, and altogether becoming god out of man.
1:796
For he who has been counted worthy to become a son of God will assuredly have in himself the dignity of the Father, and becomes heir of all the Father's good things.
1:797
How great are the gifts from the treasuries of things unspeakable!
1:798
Almost to equality of honour with Himself does He, out of His love for man, raise the nature that had been dishonoured by sin.
1:799
For if He bestows upon men kinship with that which He Himself is according to nature,
1:800
what else does He promise through this kinship than a certain equality of honour? Such, then, is the prize.
1:801
But what is the contest? 'If you make peace,' He says, 'you shall be crowned with the grace of this theme.'
1:802
It seems to me that even the work for which so great a reward is promised is itself another gift.
1:803
For what, toward the enjoyment of the things eagerly pursued in life, is sweeter to men than a peaceful life? Whatever pleasant thing in life you may name, its being pleasant has need of peace.
1:804
因為縱使人生中所看重的一切都齊備——財富、健康、妻子、兒女、房屋、父母、僕婢、朋友;
For though there be all things that are prized in life—wealth, good health, a wife, children, a house, parents, servants, friends;
1:805
陸地與海洋,各以其自身的出產使人富足;
land and sea, each enriching with its own products;
1:806
園林、獵場、浴場、角力場、體育館;
parks, hunting grounds, baths, wrestling schools, gymnasia;
1:807
尋歡之所與少年嬉遊之處;
places of luxury and of youthful sport;
1:808
以及一切屬於逸樂之發明的事物;
and all things that are the inventions of pleasure;
1:809
在這些之上還可加添悅目的觀賞與悅耳的音樂表演;
let there be added to these the pleasant spectacles and the musical entertainments;
1:810
and whatever else there is by which life is made sweet for those who live in luxury.
1:811
If all these should be present, yet the good of peace be lacking, what profit is there in those things, when war cuts short the enjoyment of the good things? Therefore this peace is both pleasant to those who partake of it, and sweetens all the things prized in life.
1:812
然而,縱使我們在和平之中遭遇了某種屬人常有的災禍,那與美善相調和的惡,在受苦之人身上也變得較易忍受;
But even if we should suffer some misfortune, as belongs to the human lot, while at peace, the evil, being mingled with good, becomes more bearable to those who suffer it;
1:813
but when war grips our life, we become in a manner insensible to such occasions of grief.
1:814
For the common calamity surpasses in painfulness the sufferings of each individual.
1:815
正如醫生論到身體的病痛所說的:若有兩種疼痛同時落在一個身體上,人只感覺到那較劇烈的一種;
And just as the physicians say concerning bodily afflictions, that if two pains should fall together at once in one body, only the more severe one comes to be felt;
1:816
而那較輕之惡的疼痛,卻不知不覺地被那佔上風者的來勢所掩蓋,令人不覺;
and the pain of the lesser evil somehow escapes notice, being stolen away by the onset of the prevailing one;
1:817
so the evils of war, surpassing in their grievousness, make each individual insensible to his own particular misfortunes.
1:818
The dead trodden underfoot, the wounded left behind, and all the bitter calamities that are found among the sufferings of war—can he who is in the midst of these ever bend his reasoning toward the memory of anything that gladdens? And if some memory of pleasant things should chance to steal upon the soul,
1:819
does not the recollection of things most dear, stealing upon the reasoning in the time of dangers, become an added burden of misfortune? Therefore He who gives you the reward, if you should be delivered from the evils of war, has bestowed on you two gifts.
1:820
因為一份恩賜是那獎賞;
For one gift is the prize;
1:821
and the other gift is the contest itself.
1:822
So that even if nothing were laid up for such a one in the way of hope, peace of itself, for its own sake, would be more worthy of all zeal to those at least who have understanding.
1:823
由此,人便可認出祂對人的慈愛何等超越:祂所賜的美好報答,不是藉著勞苦與汗流,乃是以某種安逸與心中的暢快來賜下;
In this, then, one may recognize the surpassing measure of His love for man: that He has bestowed the good recompenses not through toils and sweat, but in a manner through comforts and gladness of heart;
1:824
if indeed the chief of things that gladden is peace, which He wills to be present to each in such measure that not only should each himself possess it, but out of the great abundance should also distribute it to those who have it not.
1:825
'For blessed,' He says, 'are the peacemakers.'
1:826
締造和平的人,就是將和平給予別人的人;
And a peacemaker is one who gives peace to another;
1:827
but no one could furnish to another that which he himself does not possess.
1:828
He wills, therefore, that you first be full of the good things of peace, and then in this manner extend it to those who are in want of such a possession.
1:829
但願這番講論不要過分費心於那深處奧秘的默觀;
And let not the discourse overly busy itself with the contemplation of what lies in the depths;
1:830
for even the ready and obvious meaning is sufficient for us unto the acquisition of good.
1:831
The word bestows in brief the healing of many maladies, embracing, through this comprehensive and more general utterance, the particular cases. Let us first consider what peace is.
1:832
What else than a loving disposition of harmony toward one's kindred? What, then, is conceived as contrary to love? Hatred, wrath, anger, envy, the harbouring of grievances, hypocrisy, the calamity of war.
1:833
你看,這一句話竟是何等眾多、何等種類之疾病的解藥嗎?因為和平以同等之力抵擋上述的每一樣,並以自己的臨在成就了惡的消除。因為正如當健康得勢時,疾病就消散;當光顯現時,黑暗便不存留;
Do you see against how many and what kinds of maladies this single utterance is an antidote? For peace is set in equal opposition against each of the things mentioned, and by its own presence works the abolition of the evil. For as, when health takes hold, disease vanishes, and when light appears, darkness does not remain;
1:834
so also, when peace appears, all the passions that are constituted from its contrary are dissolved.
1:835
這是何等大的美善,我想這番講論實在無需親自詳加陳述;
How great a good this is, I think the discourse need in no way itself set forth at length;
1:836
你自己心裡已經思量過,那些彼此心懷猜疑與仇恨之人的生活是何等光景:他們的相遇令人難以忍受,彼此的一切在他們看來都可憎;
you have reckoned within yourself of what sort is the life of those who hold one another in suspicion and hatred, whose meetings are hard to bear, and to whom all things belonging to one another are abominable;
1:837
他們的口緘默無言,目光彼此避開;
their mouths voiceless, and their glances turned away;
1:838
and the ear stopped against the voice of him who hates and of him who is hated.
1:839
凡不為對方所喜愛的,都為他們各人所喜愛;
Everything is dear to each of them which is not dear to the other;
1:840
and on the contrary, everything is hostile and hateful which is agreeable to the adversary.
1:841
Just as fragrant spices fill the surrounding air with their own sweet scent,
1:842
so too He wills that the grace of peace should overflow in you in abundance, so that your very life becomes a remedy for another's disease.
1:843
How great a good this is you would recognize more precisely by reckoning up the calamities of each of those sufferings that arise in the soul from an ill-disposed will.
1:844
Who could recount as they deserve the passions of anger? What discourse could portray the unseemliness of such a disease? You behold the sufferings of the demon-possessed appearing in those who are mastered by wrath.
1:845
Consider side by side the symptoms of the demon and of wrath, and what difference there is between them.
1:846
The eye of the demon-possessed is bloodshot and distorted, the tongue raves, the utterance is harsh, the voice sharp and like a dog's barking.
1:847
These are common both to wrath and to the demon: the shaking of the head, the frenzied movements of the hands, the trembling of the whole body, the restless feet—one and the same of the two maladies displayed through these.
1:848
The one differs from the other only in this: that the one is a voluntary evil, while the other befalls unwillingly those in whom it arises.
1:849
然而,因自己的衝動而陷入災禍,比起違背心意而受苦,是何等更可憐呢?凡看見那由鬼所致之病的人,必生憐憫;
But to fall into calamity by one's own impulse—how much more pitiable is this than to suffer against one's will? Whoever saw the disease that comes from a demon assuredly had pity;
1:850
but the frenzy of wrath—he saw and at the same time imitated, counting it a loss not to surpass in his own passion the one who first fell ill.
1:851
那鬼雖然扭曲被情慾折磨之人的身體,卻使惡止於此,只叫那瘋狂者的雙手徒然向空中亂揮;
And the demon, while it wrenches the body of the passion-stricken man, halts the evil at this point, flinging the madman's hands aimlessly against the air;
1:852
but the demon of wrath does not make the movements of the body idle.
1:853
因為當這情慾佔了上風,心臟周圍的血沸騰起來——如人所說,黑膽汁因這忿怒的性情而遍佈全身——那時,頭部一切感官便被內裏聚積的蒸氣所擠壓而收縮;
For when the passion gains the upper hand, and the blood about the heart boils up—when the black bile, as they say, is scattered everywhere through the body from the wrathful disposition—then, pressed together by the vapors within, all the sense organs about the head are constricted;
1:854
眼睛從眼瞼的圍框中凸出,帶著充血如蛇一般的目光緊盯著使它惱怒之物;
the eyes are thrust out beneath the encircling of the eyelids, glaring bloodshot and serpent-like at what vexes them;
1:855
臟腑因喘息而抽緊;
the inward parts are gripped with panting;
1:856
頸上的血管脹起,舌頭變得粗鈍;
the veins along the neck swell out, and the tongue thickens;
1:857
聲音因氣管收窄而故意變得尖銳;
and the voice, as the windpipe is narrowed, is willfully sharpened;
1:858
and the lips, by the undersowing of that cold bile, are stiffened and blackened round about, and become hard to move for their natural opening and closing, so that they cannot even hold back the spittle that gathers abundantly in the mouth, but cast it out along with the words, the forced utterance spitting forth its foam.
1:859
那時人也可看見雙手被這疾病所驅動,雙腳也是如此;
Then indeed one may also see the hands set in motion by the disease, and likewise the feet;
1:860
but these limbs are moved no longer in vain, as happens in the demon-possessed, but for harm against those who are locked together with one another through the disease.
1:861
For at once the assaults of those striking one another are directed against the vital sense organs.
1:862
And if in the grappling the mouth should draw near the body, not even the teeth remain unemployed, but like a wild beast they fasten upon whatever they come near.
1:863
And who could tell in detail the evils that have their origin in wrath? He, therefore, who prevents such unseemliness would rightly be called blessed and honorable, on account of the greatest benefaction.
1:864
For if he who separates a man from some bodily unpleasantness is honored through such a good deed,
1:865
how much more shall he who has freed the soul from this disease be reckoned among the sensible as a benefactor of life? For by so much as the soul is superior to the body, by so much more honorable than those who heal bodies is he who cures souls.
1:866
但願無人以為,在由仇恨所生的種種惡中,我把怒氣的可憎看作最嚴重的;
And let no one suppose that, of the evils wrought by hatred, I think the unpleasantness of wrath to be the most grievous;
1:867
inasmuch as the hidden is also more dangerous than the manifest.
1:868
就連對狗,我們也更提防那些不以吠叫預告其怒、不從正面撲來,卻以溫柔馴良的樣子伺機趁我們不備、不防之時下手的狗;
For even among dogs we are more wary of those whose anger no barking announces beforehand, nor any onset upon the face, but who under a gentle and tame appearance lie in wait for us unforeseen and unguarded;
1:869
such is the passion that belongs to envy and hypocrisy, in which within, in the depth of the heart, hatred is nourished in secret like some fire, while the outward appearance is fashioned by hypocrisy into that of a friend.
1:870
正如火若藏在糠秕之下,一時只在裏面陰燃燒著鄰近之物,火焰卻不顯於外,只有一股辛辣的煙被裏面猛力擠壓而竄出;
And just as if fire were hidden under chaff, for a while it inwardly smolders and consumes what lies near it, yet no flame breaks out to view, but a certain acrid smoke, violently compressed within, forces its way through;
1:871
但若遇著一縷空氣穿透,便被搧成明亮而顯眼的火焰;
and if it chance upon some draft of air, then it is fanned into a bright and conspicuous flame;
1:872
嫉妒也是如此,在裏面吞噬人心,如火焚燒一堆壓緊如糠秕的東西;
so also envy inwardly devours the heart, like fire consuming a certain heap packed together like chaff;
1:873
它因羞恥而遮掩這病,卻不能將它完全隱藏;
and it hides the disease out of shame, yet is not able to conceal it altogether;
1:874
but like some acrid smoke, the bitterness from envy shows itself through in the symptoms about the countenance.
1:875
And if some calamity should touch the one who is envied, then he makes the disease manifest, making that man's grief into his own gladness and pleasure.
1:876
The hidden things of the passion are exposed, so long as it seems to lie concealed, through the manifest tokens about the face:
1:877
a fallen face, bones showing through in place of flesh.
1:878
And what is the cause of the disease? That a brother, or kinsman, or neighbor lives without dejection.
1:879
他把那人不遭不幸當作控告的理由——就是那因其亨通而使他痛苦之人;
To make it a grievance that the man is not unfortunate—the man at whose prosperity he is pained;
1:880
judging the wrong done to him not from anything evil he himself has suffered at that man's hands, but from the fact that the other, doing no wrong at all, is in circumstances he desires for himself.
1:881
「可憐的人哪,你是怎麼了?」我要對他說;
“What has befallen you, O wretched man?” I would say to him;
1:882
你把手指緊扣;
you clasp your fingers together;
1:883
你在思慮中煩悶不安;
you are distressed in your thoughts;
1:884
你發出深沉而痛楚的呻吟;
you groan with something deep and painful;
1:885
你對自己所擁有之物的享受也覺得索然無味;
the enjoyment of what you possess is displeasing to you;
1:886
your ear is ready for slander against the man who prospers.
1:887
But if anything favorable is said of him, your hearing is stopped up against the report.
1:888
你心裏既是這樣,為何用假冒為善遮掩這病呢?友誼的面具怎樣藉著假裝的善意在你臉上成形?你為何以動聽的稱呼向他問安,口說願他喜樂康健,暗中卻在心裏咒詛與此相反的事臨到他?該隱正是這樣,他因亞伯的美名而狂怒;
And being thus disposed in soul, why do you cloak the disease with hypocrisy? How is the mask of friendship shaped upon you through a feigned goodwill? Why do you extend to him fair-sounding greetings, bidding him rejoice and be in health, while in secret you invoke the opposite against his soul? Such was Cain, who raged with fury at the good repute of Abel;
1:889
嫉妒從裏面慫恿他行兇,而那藉口便成了行刑者;
envy from within urged on the murder, and the occasion became the executioner;
1:890
因他裝出友善親切的樣子,把亞伯從父母的護衛下引開,遠遠帶到田野;
for assuming a friendly and affable manner, he led him far from the protection of their parents out into the plain;
1:891
then thus he unveiled his envy by the murder.
1:892
Blessed, therefore, are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
1:893
Who are these? Those who imitate the divine love for mankind, who display in their own life what is proper to the divine activity.
1:894
The Benefactor and Lord of good things utterly abolishes and reduces to non-existence all that is alien and estranged from the good.
1:895
祂也將這作為立為你的律法:要除掉仇恨,止息爭戰,消滅嫉妒,驅逐紛爭,廢除假冒為善,撲滅那在心中陰燃的怨恨;
This activity He appoints as a law for you also: to cast out hatred, to end war, to make envy vanish, to banish strife, to abolish hypocrisy, to quench within the heart the resentment that smolders in it;
1:896
and in place of these to introduce all that is set opposite by the removal of their contraries.
1:897
For as, upon the withdrawal of darkness, light comes on, so also in place of each of these there enters in the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, kindness, longsuffering—the whole array of good things enumerated by the Apostle.
1:898
那分派神恩賜的人,怎能不是有福的呢?就是效法神恩賜的人,就是把自己的善行效法神那浩大賞賜的人?然而這福或許不單指向他人的益處;
How then is the dispenser of divine gifts not blessed? He who imitates the gracious gifts of God? He who conforms his own good deeds to the divine munificence? Yet perhaps the blessing looks not to another's good alone;
1:899
but I think that he is properly called a peacemaker who brings the strife within himself, between the flesh and the spirit, and the intestine war of his nature, into a peaceful harmony, when the law of the body, which wars against the law of the mind, is no longer active, but, subjected to the better sovereignty, becomes a servant of the divine commands.
1:900
不如說,我們不要以為這話的意思是:那些把生命導正之人仍當被看作處於二元的分裂中;
Or rather, let us not suppose that the discourse counsels this—that those who have set their life aright are to be conceived of as in a duality;
1:901
but when the middle wall of wickedness in the fence within us is removed, the two, grown together into one by their striving toward the better, become one.
1:902
祂被信為是無有組合、無有形狀的;照樣,人的部分也當如此,就是當它藉這樣的和睦,脫離那雙重組合之外,確切地歸回於美善,成為單純、無形、真正合而為一,以致所顯明的與所隱藏的相同,所隱藏的與所顯明的相同;
He is believed to be uncompounded and without form when the human element also, through such peacemaking, comes to be outside its twofold composition, and returns exactly to the good, simple and formless and truly become one, so that the visible is the same as the hidden, and the hidden the same as the visible;
1:903
then is the blessing truly confirmed, and such men are properly called sons of God, blessed according to the promise of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory unto the ages of ages.
1:904
Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
1:905
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
1:906
這崇高教訓的次序,把我們對本節經文的默想帶到第八個階梯;
The order of this lofty teaching of doctrines brings the present contemplation of the text up to the eighth step;
1:907
但我說,我們的論述最好先思想這事:先知那裏第八日的奧祕是什麼——就是那在兩篇詩篇的標題中所題到的;
but I say it is well first to consider in our discourse this: what is the mystery of the eighth in the Prophet, prefixed in two psalmodies;
1:908
and what the blessing, and the legislation of circumcision, are—both observed by the Law according to the eighth.
1:909
Perhaps this number has some kinship with the eighth blessedness,
1:910
which, like the summit of all the blessings, lies at the very topmost point of the good ascent.
1:911
For there too the Prophet signifies the day of resurrection by the enigma of the eighth, and the purification indicates the return of defiled man to that which is pure and according to nature, and circumcision interprets the casting off of the dead skins which, when stripped naked after the disobedience, we put on instead of life;
1:912
and here likewise the eighth blessedness holds the restoration into the heavens of those who had fallen into slavery, yet were again called back out of slavery unto the kingdom.
1:913
For 'Blessed,' He says, 'are those who have been persecuted for My sake;'
1:914
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
1:915
Behold the end of the contests waged according to God, the reward of labours, the prize of sweat:
1:916
to be counted worthy of the kingdom in the heavens.
1:917
No longer does the hope of good fortune stray about that which is unstable and subject to change.
1:918
因為屬地的領域乃是屬於那轉變與更改之物的;
For the earthly region belongs to things that turn and alter;
1:919
but of the things that appear and move in the heaven, we perceive none of them to be otherwise than in the self-same manner and unchangingly, but that all things in the heaven traverse their own course with sequence, order, and orderly succession.
1:920
那麼,你看見這恩賜何等超絕嗎?就是祂並非在那變遷之物中賜下這尊貴的偉大——彷彿唯恐有變更的懼怕會攪擾那更為美好的盼望;
Do you see, then, the surpassing greatness of the gift? that He bestows the greatness of the honour not among things that change—as would be the case if any fear of alteration were to disturb the more comforting hopes;
1:921
but rather, by saying 'the kingdom of the heavens,' He shows the unchangeableness and ever-selfsame character of the gift set before us in hope.
1:922
But that which occurs to me to be perplexed about from what has been said is this:
1:923
first, that He assigns to those who have been persecuted for His sake a reward equal to that of the poor in spirit, bringing both to the same standing.
1:924
因為那些得同一獎賞的人,他們的爭戰顯然也是相等的;
For those whose prize is the same, their contests too are clearly equal;
1:925
其次,又當祂把右邊的人與左邊的人分開,召他們進入諸天的國時,祂為這樣的尊榮所陳述的緣由卻不同。因為在那裡祂舉出憐憫、慷慨施予與彼此相愛,卻絲毫沒有提到靈裡的貧窮,也沒有提到為祂緣故所受的逼迫;
next, how it is that, when He separates those on the right hand from those on the left and calls them to the kingdom of the heavens, He assigns other causes for such an honour. For there He brings forward compassion, liberality, and mutual love, yet nowhere makes mention either of poverty of spirit or of persecution for His sake;
1:926
and yet, at the ready level of thought, these seem widely distinguished from one another.
1:927
因為貧窮與受逼迫有何相通之處呢?或者反過來說,這些事與那出於愛的憐憫所成就的果效,又有何協調呢?有人餵養了貧乏的人,或給赤身的人穿衣,或接待了投宿的旅客,或向患病並被囚的人施予力所能及的照顧;
For what has poverty in common with being persecuted? Or again, what harmony have these with the effects of loving compassion? Someone has fed the needy, or clothed the naked, or received a sheltered wayfarer, or brought such tending as was possible to one who is sick and imprisoned;
1:928
按著這行為的性質而言,這些事與貧窮和受逼迫又有何相同之處呢?後者是照料他人的患難;
what have these in common with being poor and being persecuted, according to the character of the practice? This one tends the misfortunes of others;
1:929
he stands in need of those who tend him—yet the end for all is the same.
1:930
For alike He leads to heaven both him who has become poor in spirit and him who has been persecuted for His sake, and those who have shown compassion toward their own kind.
1:931
What, then, do we say to these things? That all things hold together with one another, converging and breathing as one toward the single aim.
1:932
For poverty is well disposed to migration, and love of the poor is not estranged from poverty.
1:933
然而我以為,最好先探究眼前這句話;
But it seems good to me first to search out the present saying;
1:934
and then in this way to consider the harmony and the meaning in the things that have been examined.
1:935
Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake.
1:936
Persecuted from where, and by whom? Now the ready sense points us to the arena of the martyrs and hints at the course of faith.
1:937
因為這「追逐」解明了奔跑者對於速度所存那專一的熱切;
For the pursuit interprets the intense eagerness of the runner concerning speed;
1:938
or rather, it also intimates the victory in the running.
1:939
For it is not possible for a runner to conquer otherwise than by leaving behind him the one who runs with him.
1:940
既然如此,那向著上頭呼召之獎賞奔跑的人,與那為著獎賞被仇敵追逐的人,兩者背後都各有跟隨者——一個是與他競逐的對手,另一個是追逼他的人;
Since, then, both he who runs toward the prize of the upward calling and he who is pursued by the enemy on account of the prize alike have at their backs—the one, his competitor, the other, his pursuer;
1:941
而這些人就是那在為敬虔而戰的爭鬥中,跑完殉道賽程的人,他們雖被追逐卻未被追上;
and these are they who accomplish the course of martyrdom, in the contests on behalf of godliness, being pursued yet not overtaken;
1:942
it seems that the summit of the blessedness set before us in hope He has, as it were, set forth like a crown in the final words.
1:943
For blessed indeed is it to be persecuted for the Lord's sake.
1:944
因為與那惡者疏離,就成了親近良善的機緣;
For estrangement from the evil one becomes the occasion of appropriation to the good;
1:945
and the Good, even beyond every good, is the Lord Himself, to whom the persecuted one runs up.
1:946
Therefore truly blessed is he who uses the enemy as a fellow-worker toward the good.
1:947
因為人的生命既處於良善與較劣之物的分界之間,正如那從良善並崇高之盼望上滑落的人,便落入深坑;
For since human life lies on the border between the good and the worse, just as he who has slipped from the good and lofty hope comes to be in the pit;
1:948
so he who has removed himself from sin and become estranged from corruption passes over to righteousness and incorruption.
1:949
如此說來,就暴君對殉道者所施行的逼迫而言,其外在的樣式,按初看之下所顯現的,對感官乃是痛苦的;
So that of the persecution brought by the tyrants against the martyrs, the outward form, according to what appears at first sight, is painful to the sense-perception;
1:950
but the aim of what takes place surpasses all blessedness.
1:951
It would be better for us to discern the meaning of the discourse by way of examples.
1:952
誰不曉得,被人謀害比被人愛慕被視為困難得多呢?然而這看似困難之事,卻常常反倒成了許多人在今生得享好命運的緣由,正如論到約瑟的記載所顯明的;
Who does not know how much harder it has been judged to be plotted against than to be loved? Yet this thing that seems hard often becomes for many the cause even of good fortune in this life, as the account concerning Joseph shows;
