1:299
For sinners find the righteous burdensome not only while they live, but even after they have died.
1:300
Do you see Herod — how, though he had put John to death, he still carried within himself fear of him as of one living? So great a thing is virtue, so great a thing is wickedness: thus is wickedness cowardly and unmanly, [variant reading: cowardly and unmanly],
1:301
while virtue is courageous and outspoken.
1:302
我已將我的義向你顯明。因為他被辱罵,卻不還口辱罵;受苦,卻不發出威嚇;
To you I revealed my just cause. For, being reviled, he did not revile in return; suffering, he did not threaten;
1:303
but he committed himself to him who judges justly, according to the holy apostle.
1:304
Against those dwelling in Anathoth. The prophet's fellow townsmen, who also plotted against him.
1:305
Righteous are you, Lord, that I should plead my case before you.
1:306
"Nevertheless." "I know," he says, "that you are righteous;"
1:307
yet I seek an account concerning your judgments.
1:308
I must first confess to you, Lord, that you are righteous, and only then seek out the cause of what perplexes me.
1:309
Why does the way of the ungodly prosper? You know that I speak not out of envy, but in inquiry.
1:310
You planted them. That is, you created them, as maker of all things, and they were not cut off even while sinning.
1:311
You are near to their mouth, but far from their inward parts. You know, he says, that they honor you only as far as their lips, and you do not bring trials upon them, so as to test the depths of their mind.
1:312
Set them apart for the day of slaughter. He says this not as one calling down a curse upon them, but as one fully convinced that, even if it be slow in coming, punishment will surely come upon them.
1:313
And "set apart" stands for "prepare, make ready," as is said of those about to be sacrificed.
1:314
Cattle and birds have vanished. On account of the barrenness of the land.
1:315
But according to the spiritual sense, you may understand by "cattle and birds" men who are perishing: they, as birds, long for the things of heaven, yet, as cattle, do not depart from the things of earth.
1:316
你的腳奔跑,卻使你疲乏無力。這話是對犯罪的人說的;
Your feet run, and they exhaust you. The word is addressed to sinners;
1:317
for, he says, by running after wicked things, you relax the sinews of virtue.
1:318
How will you prepare yourself with horses? How, while offending God, can you believe you will be saved by the help of cavalry? But according to the spiritual sense, the horses bearing the divine Word mounted upon them are the apostles and prophets.
1:319
他問:你既追隨惡行,又怎能為得著這些〔使徒先知〕的益處而作準備呢?「你豈能倚靠你平安之地?」他說:不要仗恃如今地上的太平;
How then, he asks, can you prepare yourself to benefit from these, while pursuing the works of wickedness? "And do you trust in the land of your peace?" Do not be confident, he says, in the present peace of the land;
1:320
for war will surely come, so long as you keep transgressing.
1:321
How, he says, can you be confident in the knowledge of piety while sinning? For piety is the land of peace, through which we are at peace with God.
1:322
What will you do amid the swelling of the Jordan? The boast of the Jordan is the divine baptism.
1:323
你既犯罪,又怎能誇耀你的洗禮呢?「他們從你身後聚集攻擊你,你不要信靠他們。」倘若這話是對先知說的,他所指的就是亞拿突那些圖謀殺害他的同鄉;
How then can you, while sinning, boast in your baptism? "They have gathered themselves against you from behind; do not trust in them." If the word is addressed to the prophet, he speaks concerning his fellow citizens in Anathoth, who wished to kill him;
1:324
but if it is addressed to the sinner:
1:325
those, he says, who of old were bound to you through piety, now abhor you, and have become your enemies, and pursue you.
1:326
Is my heritage a hyena's den? The hyena's den is full of uncleanness, and of dead men's bones from various bodies.
1:327
Such were the leaders of the Jews: whitewashed tombs, full within of dead men's bones, that is, filled with every uncleanness.
1:328
讓牠們來吞吃她吧。這是指一切因罪而與人爭戰的事物;
Let them come to devour her. All the things that war against man because of sin;
1:329
but according to the historical sense, he means the Romans.
1:330
Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard. The shepherding that is according to God is one.
1:331
但那眾多的牧人——無論是猶太人、希臘人,或是異端者——都引進各種不同的教訓,各人都想要鞏固自己的一套;
But the many shepherds — whether Jews, or Greeks, or heretics — introduce diverse teachings, and each wishes to establish his own;
1:332
whence also arise the diverse ways of those being taught.
1:333
因我的緣故,全地都變為荒涼。這話是以主的口吻說的,表明因對祂所行的殺害,猶太人的地土就變為荒涼;
Because of me all the land has been utterly laid waste. Spoken in the person of the Lord, this shows that, because of the slaughter inflicted upon him, the land of the Jews was laid waste;
1:334
but spoken from the common person of humanity, it signifies that, because man has given himself over to every kind of teaching, the land has been laid waste.
1:335
"There is," he says, "no man who considers that God is the Lord of men, and that they ought not, through their own teaching, to make those they teach into their own possession, so as to lord it over them."
1:336
Upon every byway in the wilderness. The captives of the Jews.
1:337
but according to the spiritual sense, those who accept the fruitless teaching of the many shepherds.
1:338
因為主的刀劍必從地的這邊吞噬到地的那邊。按照歷史的意思,是指羅馬人的手蹂躪猶太人的地土;
For the sword of the Lord will devour from one end of the earth to the other. According to the historical sense, the hand of the Romans ravaging the land of the Jews;
1:339
but according to the spiritual sense, the Lord's permission, on account of the free will of both shepherds and flock; you are to understand the "sword of the Lord" as destroying those in every land who are persuaded by the varied teachings — men who do not even live at peace with one another,
1:340
the statement concerns those who, by plausible argument, supposing that they are setting forth nourishing teaching, reap destruction for themselves.
1:341
Their portions shall not profit them. The pastoral charges will profit the shepherds nothing.
1:342
Be ashamed of your boasting. Such boasting, he says, is worthy of shame and reproach before God.
1:343
For thus says the Lord concerning all the wicked neighbors. The wicked neighbors are those who counterfeit the divine word, and who also create byways, diverting the divine teaching from its course.
1:344
看哪,我要把他們拔出來。他說:「我要把我百姓中得救的人,從惡鄰居的地上拔出來」;
Behold, I will tear them away. "I will pluck out," he says, "those of my people who are being saved, from the land of the wicked neighbors";
1:345
that is, from idolatry and false teaching.
1:346
By "Judah" he means the people who confess him and are being saved, whom he also promises to bring out from that wicked land.
1:347
And it shall be, after I have cast them out, that I will turn again and have mercy on them. "And these too," he says, "I will have mercy on" — meaning the Gentiles — bestowing on them the forgiveness that comes through the holy washing.
1:348
And it shall be ... that they swear by my name. So that they may no longer swear by idols, but hold the Master Christ as the one by whom they swear.
1:349
你去,為自己買一條細麻布的腰帶。細麻布的腰帶是可以被多次洗濯的;
Go, and get for yourself a linen girdle. A linen girdle is one that can be washed many times;
1:350
and it signifies those who have often been forgiven, and yet have not repented.
1:351
And behold, it had been ruined — which was not... The water ruined the loincloth:
1:352
Now water is sin, being altogether moist and running off, and rendering those who make use of it useless.
1:353
Those who are unwilling to obey my words, and who have gone after strange gods. It is an outrage against God to offer to idols the worship that belongs to him.
1:354
And you shall say to this people:
1:355
Every wineskin shall be filled with wine. He compares them to wineskins, either because they are empty and possess only the outward form of human beings, or because, if they should so wish, they are able once again to receive the divine teachings of faith in Christ.
1:356
Behold, I fill the priests with strong drink. By way of punishment for their wrongdoing.
1:357
Give glory to your Lord before it grows dark. Your Lord Jesus Christ is light:
1:358
Therefore, he says, while you have the light, believe in it.
1:359
And before your feet stumble... The dark mountains are the evil powers, and the diabolical energies.
1:360
Therefore, he says, before the devil's boldness [is unleashed], believe in the light.
1:361
And you will wait for light, and there is the shadow of death, and they will be set in darkness. For false teachings, though they promise light, prove to be the agents of death.
1:362
我的靈魂必暗自哭泣。這話或是對教師們說的,意思是:你們既為所欺騙的人感到羞愧,就當暗自哭泣;
My soul shall weep in secret. Either the word is addressed to the teachers, meaning: Being ashamed of those whom you have deceived, weep in secret;
1:363

1:437
And the deceitful water that has no faithfulness is the baptisms of the heretics.
1:438
你若回轉,我必使你復興;
If you return, I will also restore you;
1:439
and you shall stand before my face. For if, he says, you depart from sin, you shall be as Adam was from the beginning, deemed worthy of my contemplation/vision.
1:440
And if you bring forth what is precious out of what is worthless, you shall be as my mouth. If you bring forth a precious word — that is, the confession of faith — out of one who was formerly worthless and faithless, and cause him to believe, you shall be as the mouth of the Savior who said:
1:441
O woman, great is your faith.
1:442
And they shall turn back to you, but you shall not turn back to them. Strive, he says, O prophet, to be such as to draw them toward virtue, and not to be dragged down by their wickedness.
1:443
And you shall not take [a wife]. It is related that the prophet was a virgin, as one commanded by God not to marry.
1:444

And voice. He speaks of the complete removal of joy.
1:447
巴比倫相對於耶路撒冷而言,是位於更北方的;
Babylon lies more to the north in relation to Jerusalem;
1:448
so he speaks, according to the history, of sensible Babylon, or also of the intelligible captivity of souls.
1:449
Behold, I send. He speaks of the apostles.
1:450

[To draw them] out from the diabolical workings.
1:452
And they shall hunt. [Namely,] the demons, or also the ways of wickedness.
1:453
And above every [height]. [That is,] the unseen and hardly comprehensible workings of wickedness.
1:454
我必報應。若是針對群魔而言,則加諸他們身上的是雙重的懲罰,因為他們既使人離棄真神,又使自己被奉為神;
And I will repay. If indeed against the demons, then also the twofold punishment brought upon them, because they both turned men away from the true God and made gods of themselves;
1:455
but if against men who sin after [having received] knowledge, they are for this reason punished doubly.
1:456
在死屍之中。〔即〕在罪的死行之中;
Among the dead carcasses. [That is,] among the dead works of sin;
1:457
and the Law also abominates dead carcasses.
1:458
To you [shall come] the nations. To the Lord Jesus, concerning whom it is written:
1:459
And in him shall the nations hope.
1:460
Will he make? [Refers] to the incarnation.
1:461
And I will make known. It is the Father who is speaking, concerning the Only-begotten.
1:462
受咒詛的。或指對自己,也可指對他人;
Accursed. Upon himself, or also upon some other;
1:463
or also he who supposes the Savior Christ to be a mere man, and not God become man.
1:464
And relies. [That is,] and is confident in his own power.
1:465
他必如野生檉柳。這種植物,即使活著,也是半枯焦的;
He shall be like the wild tamarisk. This plant, even while alive, is half-dead and scorched;
1:466
and it is said to die whenever rain falls upon it.
1:467
He who does not believe that Christ, having become man, is God, shall not enjoy the good things of his coming.
1:468
And shall dwell. It is the saltwort plant, and moreover of many kinds.
1:469
And shall not fear. In the time of trial, he says.
1:470
And it shall be. [That is,] the flourishing fruits of virtue, covering him round about in his trials.
1:471
在一年之中。一年乃是一個循環;
In the year. The year is a cycle;
1:472
therefore, he says, in the time of a universal trial he shall not fear.
1:473
人心是深的。獨生子道成肉身的奧祕是深奧而不可測度的;
Deep is the heart. The mystery of the incarnation of the Only-begotten is deep and incomprehensible;
1:474
for while remaining God, he also became man.
1:475
他說:那麼誰能知曉祂從父而生之事,或祂與肉身相關那不可言喻的救恩安排呢?鷓鴣啼叫了。據說鷓鴣生性高傲,牠用叫聲把別的鳥的幼雛引來歸屬自己;
Who then shall know, he says, either his begetting from the Father, or the ineffable dispensation that took place with the flesh? The partridge cried out. The partridge, as they say, being arrogant, calls to itself, by its voice, the chicks of others;
1:476
那些幼雛日後發覺自己並非牠所出,便棄牠而去;
who, when they later realize that they do not belong to it, abandon it;
1:477
so also men who were deceived by the devil, when they come to know their own Creator and Master, God, depart from him.
1:478
And not at the end. Since he desired the things of others without judgment, later, being convicted, he shall be shown to be foolish.
1:479
Throne. You are, he says, Lord, who have the exalted throne of glory, and who grant both our being and our continuance.
1:480
Let them be put to shame. Let those who have departed from God, he says, be inscribed not in heaven, but on earth, according to: 'Earth you are, and to earth you shall go.'
1:481
And a day. In place of: none of the things that are man's.
1:482
Do not become to me. In the toilsome and testing day of judgment, do not stand opposed to me as a stranger and adversary, O Lord, but sparing me, forgive me my sins.
1:483
並願他們蒙羞。他在咒詛群魔;
And let them be put to shame. He curses the demons;
1:484
因為這聖者並不願意將人交付於永久的刑罰;
for the holy one does not wish to hand men over to perpetual punishment;
1:485
because they are also the inventors, the compellers, and the teachers of wickedness for men.
1:486
不可搬入〔重擔〕。他們過去是按照一個明確的尺度行走的;
Not to bring in [burdens]. They used to walk according to a clearly defined measure;
1:487
for to travel a distance was considered to be work, and this is what is spoken of in the Acts: 'having a Sabbath day's journey.'
1:488
And I will kindle. By mentioning unquenchable fire, the text sends us on to spiritual contemplation, teaching that eternal fire receives the soul which does not put away the burdens of sin.
1:489
And again. He hints at the re-formation that comes through baptism.
1:490
As it pleased [him to make]. Not good was its disposition, but evil.
1:491
因為這屬於自由抉擇,屬於自主之權;
For this belongs to free choice and to self-determination;
1:492
誠然,即使犯罪的人,也蒙吩咐要悔改;
indeed, even those who sin are bidden to repent;
1:493
We are taught, then, not to pry curiously into the unattainable ways of [God's] creating.
1:494
“And at last I will speak.” If I pronounce…
1:495
“Behold, I fashion.” According to the punitive afflictions, he says; and since men do not remember all their sins,
1:496
I bring them before your eyes, that through the punishments you may be reminded of the sins you have committed.
1:497
“And they said.” They spoke shamelessly, saying, “We will stubbornly persist in what we are doing.”
1:498
“You say,” he says, that “having turned away from good works, we have followed after base things;”
1:499
we will go on following after those very base things.
1:500
「豈能斷絕呢?」磐石是基督,乳房則是那滋養人的言語;
“Shall they fail?” The rock is Christ, and the breasts are the nourishing word;
1:501
and the snow is the cleansing of sins.
1:502
The breasts are also understood as the New and the Old Testament.
1:503
難道我在善待他們、餵養他們的靈魂上有何缺欠嗎?「豈能偏離呢?」他這是甚麼意思?他們豈不是在今生這樣飄搖動盪,如同被狂風所吹送的水嗎?然而他們既不思念我的恩惠,也不思念今生的無常;
Have I then in any way failed to do good to them, and to nourish their souls? “Shall it turn aside?” What does he mean? Are they not, in this present life, tossed about like waves, as water carried along by a violent wind? And yet they took no account either of my benefactions or of the instability of the present life;
1:504
but they go on in this life walking thus, treading the uneven course of this life, as though they supposed that they would remain here forever.
1:505
Therefore they shall also grow faint in their ways, burning incense to God in vain, with a base disposition.
1:506
By “paths” and “cords” he means the same thing, in place of “the ways.”
1:507
“And a hissing.” Because men, whether marveling or mocking, are naturally inclined to hiss.
1:508
“As a wind.” I will afflict all alike—
1:509
for the wind burns up all alike.
1:510
It is characteristic of those taken captive by the spear to bow down toward the earth, so as to show the neck rather than the face.
1:511
Or, because in the case of those who have turned away, it is not the face but the neck that we see, which signifies God's turning away.
1:512
“That it shall not perish.” They took counsel, saying:
1:513
「耶利米是祭司,必然通曉律法;他又是先知,知道將要發生的事;
“Jeremiah is a priest, and of necessity knows the law; and being a prophet, he knows what is to come;
1:514
and being prudent, he knows what is fitting.
1:515
Come, therefore, he says, let us provoke him with words, and he will certainly tell us what is to come to pass.
1:516
“And the punishment.” While uttering other things with the tongue, they were secretly contriving destruction against me.
1:517
“His ears shall ring.” That is, he shall be thrown into confusion.
1:518
For a sound falling upon the ears produces confusion.
1:519
“The polyandrion.” A polyandrion is a grave; and since it had perhaps caved in, the collapse was so called—the burial-place of the son of Hinnom.
1:520
“And I will slaughter.” That is, those who devised the evil counsel.
1:521
「在圍困之中。」就是仇敵圍城之時;
“In the siege.” When the enemies encompass the city;
1:522
“As the place.” In ruined places men are wont to throw their filth.
1:523
Thus, therefore, he says, I will cause the city to become, together with the houses in which they practiced idolatry.
1:524
「陀斐特(Ταφέθ)。」陀斐特解作「塌陷」;先知因此來到那裡,預告同樣的災禍;
“Tapheth.” Tapheth is interpreted “collapse”; whence the prophet, having come there, foretells these same evils;
1:525
and they hardened their neck, just as beasts of burden that toss their head back against the yoke.
1:526
“And Pashhur heard.” This Pashhur was a priest, and the first among the false prophets.
1:527
“Into the stocks.” In a secluded place of the temple.
1:528
“With all your friends.” Those who work together with you in prophesying falsely.
1:529
「你誘惑了我。」在此他所稱的「誘惑」——其實是一種美好的誘惑——乃是指從惡轉向善的改變;
“You have deceived me.” Here he calls “deception”—indeed, a good deception—the change from worse to better;
1:530
“You enticed me, and I was enticed”—so he rendered it.
1:531
What he means is this:
1:532
“You promised me, Lord, to shield me, and yet you let me remain in such circumstances.”
1:533
He says this not blaming God, but just as Paul also says: “Concerning this I besought the Lord three times.”
1:534
“I was deceived,” thinking that they would become better through your predictions, and they have not become so.
1:535
“For with my bitter word I will laugh at faithlessness.” For there is a bitter laughter, brought forth from the anguish of the soul.
1:536
And by this laughter, he says, I show that I am afflicted because of them.
1:537
“I will no longer speak.” Because there is no one who obeys.
1:538
“And it became like fire.” The zeal on behalf of God.
1:539
“Gather yourselves together against [him].” This is what those plotting against the prophet were saying: “Watch all his words, [to see] whether they are consistent;”
1:540
so that, if he should be found in any way contradicting himself, they might destroy him as a liar.
1:541
“Therefore they persecuted [me].” Because God is with me, and because they do things worthy of dishonor.
1:542
「我母親生我的那日。」他這樣說話,是對那些本無實質、又已成過去、不能承受咒詛的事,姑且輕忽地道及;
“The day on which my mother bore me.” As one making light of things that have no substance and are already past, things that cannot receive a curse, he utters these words;
1:543
in order only to show the trial that had befallen him.
1:544
“Cursed [be that day].” They say that Julius wrote in his own works that Ananias the false prophet was himself the very first to tell Hilkiah, the father of Jeremiah, that a male child had been born to him.
1:545
Justly, therefore, he curses him, as having become to the people a cause of destruction.
1:546
But according to the [spiritual] sense, understand it thus:
1:547
Scripture in many places calls the devil “a man.”
1:548
他說:因此,「該受咒詛的」就是魔鬼,牠曾對我們的父、神說:「看哪,這人是男的」——意即勇毅剛強;
“Cursed,” therefore, he says, “be the devil,” who said to our Father, God, “Behold, the human being is male”—that is, courageous;
1:549
「讓他聽見哀號。」按字面經文而言,是指迅速;
“Let him hear a cry.” According to the literal text: swiftly;
1:550
but according to the [spiritual] sense: “Let the devil,” he says, “be terrified at the manifestation, and at the rising of the true sun, Jesus our Lord.”
1:551
「並戰爭的呼喊。」按字面經文而言:他說,亞拿尼雅在仍受審判懲治之時,還要聽見仇敵的聲音;
“And of a war-cry.” According to the literal text: “Still,” he says, “while being brought to account, Ananias will hear the voice of the enemies;”
1:552
but according to the [spiritual] sense: “At midday the Lord is crucified;”
1:553
那時,魔鬼也徹底被擊敗;
when also the devil was utterly defeated;
1:554
for a war-cry is a shout raised over fallen enemies.
1:555
「因他沒有殺死我。」這件事亞拿尼雅是做不到的;
“That he did not kill me.” This Ananias was not able to do;
1:556
so that it is more fitting to view it in its spiritual sense.
1:557
「我母親竟成了我的〔墳墓〕。」他說:為何它仍停留在那個意向之中,而那籌算竟被打消,我卻未能將心願付諸實行呢?為何如此?「我竟出來了。」罪成了勞苦與艱辛的緣由;
“And my mother became to me [my grave].” Why, he says, did it remain fixed in that intention, and was the reasoning dissolved, and I did not carry the purpose into effect? Why this? “I came forth.” Sin has become the cause of toils and hardships;
1:558
and it also produces remorse in the one who sins.
1:559
The word, therefore, laments this reversal.
1:560
「西底家王差人到他那裡的時候。」西底家原已被巴比倫王擄去,後又蒙巴比倫王重新立他作耶路撒冷的王,並向他起誓,必不背棄他;
“When King Zedekiah sent to him.” Zedekiah, having become a captive of the Babylonian [king], was again established by him to reign over Jerusalem, having given him oaths that he would not break faith with him;
1:561
But when he transgressed the covenants, the Babylonian again marched against him.
1:562
"And he who trades." As one not setting himself against the divine judgment, which justly determined that they be handed over to the Babylonians.
1:563
"And his soul shall be..." — that is, "he shall gain his soul." "Judge in the morning" — "in the morning" means, repent quickly.
1:564
"And it shall be burned." He speaks of the food, for the Babylonian took that too.
1:565
"And I will bring upon you." Since he next mentions cedars, signifying those of high rank, he necessarily also spoke of an axe.
1:566
"You have built." Understand "upper chambers" as the heights that are lifted up against the knowledge of God.
1:567
"He who weaves," therefore, he says, weaves for himself doctrines of false opinion.
1:568
"Shall you reign?" You have emulated, he says, your father Ahaz, and have striven to surpass him in impiety.
1:569
"He shall be buried with the burial of a donkey." Instead of: the bellies of carrion-eating birds and dogs shall become his tomb —
1:570
that is to say, that his burial shall be cast away.
1:571
But according to the spiritual sense, he who lives together with irrationality, and dies together with it, is buried with the burial of a donkey.
1:572
"For they have been shattered." "The lovers of Jerusalem" — you shall understand these to be both the demons, and also the false prophets, who, though seeming to love her, deceived her.
1:573
"I spoke to you." [He means] the true prophets, whom you did not listen to when they told you of your transgressions.
1:574
"All your shepherds the wind shall shepherd." Instead of: they shall be scattered.
1:575
"You who dwell in Lebanon." In the land of the promise.
1:576
"Nesting among the cedars." Trusting in, and fleeing for refuge to, the powerful men among you.
1:577
"As I live, says the Lord." Even if such a hypocrite should compose himself outwardly unto godliness, and perform good deeds — for this is what is meant by "upon my right hand" — I, God, knowing that he is only feigning for the occasion, will not spare him.
1:578
"Signet" — he means a ring.
1:579
And a ring in the hand of God is a good deed unmixed with evils.
1:580
Even if he should flee up into heaven — which is impossible — from there I will pluck him out and hand him over to his enemies.
1:581
"O earth, earth, hear." He calls the earth to witness, upon which he had committed the acts of injustice.
1:582
"And you drove out." From the godly way of life.
1:583
"And I will establish." So that they might again reap the divine teachings.
1:584
"And I will raise up." The presidents of the churches.
1:585
"Nor shall they be terrified." The Jews have nothing to say against this.
