1:3097
For just as fire eagerly and, so to speak, by nature lays hold of its fuel, so also the grace of the all-holy and adorable Spirit seeks to take hold of our souls, that it may shine forth to those in the world and may direct, through those in whom it shines, the steps of the many, so that they too, walking rightly, may draw near to the fire, and one by one — or even all together, if it be possible — may be kindled and shine like gods in our midst, so that the seed of the God of Jacob may be blessed and multiplied, and the God-like man may not fail, shining as a light upon the earth.
1:3098
For my part, then, I hold that the truth is thus, and that this is the will of God toward us, whom He Himself fashioned and honored and glorified of old with the glory of His own image;
1:3099
but do you look into and test the things that are spoken by us.
1:3100
And if we do not think and speak the same things as the apostles and as the holy and God-bearing fathers, according to what has been said, and if we do not second the sayings uttered by God in the holy Gospels — that is, if we do not clearly kindle in all men, by demonstrations, the life-giving energy and gift that is present in them but has been wickedly quenched by senseless syllogisms, as far as depends upon them, and do not point out the light already shining, establishing and speaking everything plainly out of the holy Scriptures themselves — then let me be anathema from the Lord God and Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit, as one teaching contrary to what the divine apostles taught and preached; and do you not only stop your ears against the hearing, but also stone me and put me to death as an impious and godless man.
1:3101
Εἰ δέ τά Δεσποτικά καί ἀποστολικά δόγματα, διαστρεφόμενα παρά τινων, ἀνορθοῦμεν, ἐξ αὐτῶν τῶν θείων πάλιν Γραφῶν τά ὑποστηρίζοντα καί διορθοῦντα τήν ἐκείνων καί τῶν πειθομένων αὐτοῖς διάνοιαν συλλεγόμενοι, τήν ἀνάστασίν τε καί τήν ἄφθαρσίαν καί τήν ζωήν καί τήν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν καί αὐτά τά αἰώνια ἀγαθά μή ἐν ἐλπίσιν αὐτοῖς ἅπαντα προσδοκᾶν παραινοῦμεν, ἀλλά τά μέν προκείμενα καί ἀποκαλυπτόμενα, φαινόμενά τε καί ὁρώμενα καί ὡς ἀρραβῶνας τοῖς ἐκλεκτοῖς καί σωθῆναι μέλλουσιν ἀπεντεῦθεν ἤδη διδόμενα ἐκδιδάσκομεν, τά δέ μετά θάνατον καί τήν ἀνάστασιν εἰς αὐτούς προτιθέμενα ἀποδεῖξαι καί βεβαιῶσαι προτεθυμήμεθα, οὐχί μᾶλλον ἀποδεκτοί αὐτοῖς καί πᾶσιν εἶναι ὀφείλομεν καί λίαν ἀγαπητοί, ὡς τῆς τελείας ἀγάπης ἔργον ἐπιδεικνύμενοι;
But if we are setting straight the dogmas of the Master and of the apostles, which are being perverted by certain men — gathering again from the divine Scriptures themselves the things that support and correct their understanding and that of those persuaded by them — and if we exhort them not to expect the resurrection, and incorruption, and life, and the kingdom of the heavens, and the eternal good things themselves, all merely in hope, but teach that some of these things are set before us and revealed, appearing and being seen, and are given even now as pledges to the elect and to those about to be saved, while we have zealously undertaken to demonstrate and confirm to them those things which are set forth for them after death and the resurrection — then ought we not rather to be accepted by them and by all, and greatly beloved, as ones displaying the work of perfect love?
1:3102
For just as one who finds a hidden treasure and keeps it for himself alone is blamed by all and condemned as a lover of money, but one who does not hide it for himself but discloses it to all and makes it manifest and lets each take as much as he wishes is altogether praiseworthy and to be received by God and men — so also I, in spiritual matters, will be one who is 'beside himself,' speaking by the grace of God.
1:3103
For indeed, when a treasure hidden under the divine Scriptures — pointed out to me by a holy man in a certain place — was made known to me, I did not shrink from rousing myself to search it out and to see it; but having asked that man to become my helper and fellow-worker, and having taken him, I abandoned every other occupation and work of life, and standing at the place where that good man had indicated to me by letters that the treasure was, with much toil and labor, night and day, I did not cease to dig, to shovel, to cast out the earth, and to make the excavation deep, until the treasure began to gleam through together with the soil from above.
1:3104
Having therefore labored greatly, digging out and casting away the earth, I beheld the whole treasure lying somewhere below — beneath, as I suppose, all the earth — spread out unmixed and pure from all defilement; and beholding it, I cry out continually, and thus I proclaim aloud to those who disbelieve and are unwilling to labor and to dig:
1:3105
Come and see, all you who disbelieve the divine Scriptures!
1:3106
Guilelessly I learned it, and ungrudgingly I impart it; wherefore indeed I thus cry out to all, as has been said:
1:3107
Come, learn that not in the age to come only, but already, somewhere here, there lies before your eyes and hands and feet the unspeakable treasure that is above every rule and authority!
1:3108
Come, be assured that this treasure, of which I speak to you, is the light of the world.
1:3109
And it is not I who speak this of myself, but the treasure itself has said and says:
1:3110
I am the resurrection and the life; I am the grain of mustard seed hidden in the earth; I am the pearl bought by the faithful; I am the kingdom of the heavens hidden in your midst; and just as I am now seen by those who have sought and found Me, so also will I shine in them and above all of them, as I now am, shining while hidden above all the heavens.
1:3111
Even here I, who by nature am uncontainable, become containable in you by grace; and I, the invisible, become visible — not shown as great as I am, though I remain wholly seen, but only in so far as the nature and power of those who see Me can receive.
1:3112
我就是那麵酵,魂一取了它,藏在魂三分的部分裡,就全發起來,變得全然與我相似;
I am the leaven which, when a soul takes it and hides it in its threefold part, it is leavened and becomes wholly like Me;
1:3113
for such as the leaven is, such also becomes the flour that is kneaded with it, together with the water and the salt.
1:3114
For, He says, together with Me the Son, My Father who is of the same nature, and His Paraclete, these have become, as it were, in place of the water and the salt.
1:3115
我就是那樂園,向我的僕人成了屬靈的樂園,代替那可感知的樂園;我把凡信入我、並藉聖靈重生的人都安置在其中,他們不再能犯罪,這世界的執政者對他們也毫無能力;
I am the paradise, become spiritual to My servants in place of the sensible paradise, in which I place all who believe in Me and are born again through the Spirit, who can no longer sin, nor has the ruler of this world any power against them;
1:3116
I am in them and they in Me, and they overcome the world, because they are outside the world and have Me, who am mightier than all, with themselves.
1:3117
I am the light-formed fountain of the immortal stream and river, in which those who love Me from their soul are washed, not after death, but at every hour, by the water flowing out from Me, and are cleansed of all defilement in body and soul, and shine all over, like a lamp and like the form of a ray of the sun.
1:3118
I am He who rises in these men at every hour as in the morning, the intelligibly seen sun, just as of old I also manifested Myself in the prophets, and they, beholding, sang praises, calling upon Me continually.
1:3119
And why am I thus constrained to speak to your love all these things which God, thirsting for our salvation, utters to us — save altogether for this: that through all of them you, having learned, may be persuaded that those who sit in darkness ought to behold the great light shining, if indeed they look at all; and that none of you may reckon that, though it has shone, it is impossible for those still being men in the body to see it clearly.
1:3120
Εἰ γάρ μή ἦν δυνατόν, τί καί ἔλαμψε καί λάμπει μή καθορώμενον ὑπ αὐτῶν;
For if it were not possible, why has it shone and does it shine, if it is not to be seen clearly by them?
1:3121
Rather, the light always was and always shone and shines in those who have been purified, and shone in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it; and now it shines, and the darkness does not comprehend it — that is, does not lay hold of it.
1:3122
但如今說它已向那坐在黑暗中的百姓升起,意思乃是它此刻樂意向那些人顯示,並向他們顯現;
But to say now that it has arisen for the people sitting in darkness, means that it has just now been well-pleased to be revealed to those to whom it also manifests itself;
1:3123
for the others, being in the darkness, do not comprehend it.
1:3124
For the Invisible One was seen, on the one hand through the body, with the bodily eyes, by all who beheld Him, both unbelievers and believers; but the light of His Godhead was made known and revealed only to those who were faithful through their works, who also said to Him:
1:3125
主啊,看哪,我們已經撇下一切跟從了你;
Behold, we, Lord, have left all and followed You;
1:3126
and by saying 'all,' He included possessions and money and self-wills, and the despising even of this temporal life and the loathing of it, on account of the tasting of that other, substantial and eternal life; for that which is altogether sweeter and more to be preferred is that very thing which is God Himself.
1:3127
But I beseech you all, O fathers and brothers, to be zealous to partake of such a life, which is the light of God, the very Holy Spirit Himself, who sanctifies those who partake of Him and makes them gods by adoption.
1:3128
And of the many words which I have spoken to you, do not be forgetful; but first learn yourselves always to practice the good, and thus teach others to do this also, so that the word of your teaching may be operative and readily received by those who hear.
1:3129
If indeed it be so, I am guiltless of the blood of you all; for I have not shrunk from declaring to you the things spoken to me, made known to me, and commanded me by our Lord Jesus Christ, through His adorable and Holy Spirit, concerning the exalted gifts and graces of His co-eternal God and Father — which the same good God and benefactor of ours ever, even until now, gives to those who laboriously seek participation in them through faith; to whom belongs all glory, honor, and worship, now and ever, and unto the ages of the ages.
1:3130
Thanksgiving to God for the gifts of which he had been deemed worthy.
1:3131
And an exposition of how God ever manifests Himself to those who are purified in heart, and in what deeds and tokens.
1:3132
I give thanks and worship and fall down before You, Lord of all and all-holy King, because You have had mercy on me, who am unworthy, and have honored me and glorified me, as You Yourself willed from above; since even before the world came into being from You, having me wholly in Yourself, You honored me, glorifying me with Your Word and image.
1:3133
For it was for no other reason than for me — made after Your image and likeness — that You brought all things forth from non-being, having made me king of all earthly things, unto the glory of Your great work and goodness.
1:3134
I give thanks to You, because You have fulfilled unto good all my request and desire, according to Your promises to us Your servants, and have graciously bestowed on me, the unworthy, more than heaven and earth, and beyond what I hoped for and desired.
1:3135
'Whatever you ask in My name, believing, you shall receive.'
1:3136
I give thanks to You, because when I longed to see one of Your saints and, through him, believing, to find mercy with You, You Yourself, O Good One, not only did this, and showed me a genuine servant of Yours — I mean the blessed and holy Symeon — and were well-pleased that I should be loved by him, but also bestowed on me countless other good things which I had not hoped for.
1:3137
Πόθεν γάρ που ἐγίνωσκον τάλας ἐγώ ὅτι τοιοῦτος ὑπάρχεις καλός Δεσπότης ἡμῶν, ἵνα ἐπιθυμίαν λάβω τήν περί σοῦ;
For whence indeed could I, wretched man, ever have known that You, our good Master, are such a One, that I might conceive a longing concerning You?
1:3138
Πόθεν που ᾔδειν ὅτι φανεροῖς σεαυτόν τοῖς ἐρχομένοις πρός σέ ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἔτι διάγουσιν, ἵνα καί θεάσασθαί σε ἐξεζήτησα;
Whence could I have known that You manifest Yourself to those who come to You while still passing their life in the world, that I might seek even to behold You?
1:3139
Πόθεν που ἐγίνωσκον ὅτι χαρᾶς τοιαύτης καί ἀνέσεως καταξιοῦνται οἱ τῆς χάριτός σου τό φῶς ἐν ἑαυτοῖς εἰσδεχόμενοι;
Whence could I have known that those who receive within themselves the light of Your grace are deemed worthy of such joy and repose?
1:3140
Πόθεν δέἤ πῶς τάλας ἐγίνωσκον ὅτι τό Πνεῦμά σου τό Ἅγιον οἱ σέ πεπιστευκότες λαμβάνουσι;
Whence, or how, could I, wretched man, have known that those who have believed in You receive Your Holy Spirit —
1:3141
receiving Him, as afterward I learned by deed itself?
1:3142
Πόθεν που ἐγίνωσκον, Δέσποτα, ὅτι σύ ἀόρατος ὤν καί ἀχώρητος, ὁρᾶσαι καί χωρῆσαι ἐντός ἡμῶν;
Whence could I have known, Master, that You, being invisible and uncontainable, are seen and are contained within us?
1:3143
Πόθεν που εἶχόν ποτε λογίσασθαι ὅτι κτίσας Δεσπότης τά σύμπαντα ἀνθρώποις ἑνοῦσαι, οὕς αὐτός ἔπλασας, καί θεοφόρους τούτους ἐργάζῃ καί υἱούς σου ποιεῖς, ἵνα καί εἰς πόθον τούτων ἦλθον καί ταῦτα λαβεῖν ἐζήτησα παρά σοί;
Whence could I ever have been able to reckon that You, the Master who created all things, unite Yourself to men whom You Yourself fashioned, and make them God-bearing, and make them Your sons — so that I too might come to a longing for these things and seek to receive them from You?
1:3144
Truly, my Master who loves mankind, I knew none of all these things in any way at all.
1:3145
For even if, bending over the divine Scriptures which Your saints set forth, I once read concerning these things, yet I heard them as though they were spoken concerning certain others, or to certain other people, and I was insensibly disposed toward all that was written, never being able to grasp any conception at all concerning them.
1:3146
'The things which eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and which have not come up upon the heart of man — the things which God has prepared for those who love Him' — I was persuaded that it was impossible for anyone still in the flesh to come to the contemplation of them.
1:3147
But I thought that You had shown these things to him alone, out of special favor; and I, wretched man, did not know that this comes from You upon all who love You.
1:3148
Πόθεν δέἤ πῶς ἠδυνάμην εἰδέναι ὅτι πᾶς πιστεύων εἰς σέ μέλος σόν γίνεται, χάριτι ἀπαστράπτων Θεότητατίς δέ τοῦτο πιστεύσει;
Whence, or how, was I able to know that everyone who believes in You becomes Your member, flashing forth Godhead by grace — and who will believe this?
1:3149
Πόθεν που ἐγίνωσκον ὅτι σύ ἀντί τροφῆς αἰσθητῆς ἀθάνατος καί ἄφθαρτος ἄρτος τοῖς διά σέ πεινῶσιν ἀκόρεστος γίνῃ καί πηγή τοῖς διψῶσιν ἀθάνατος καί χιτών ἀπαστράπτων τοῖς εὐτελῆ διά σέ περιβεβλημένοις ἱμάτια;
Whence could I have known that You, in place of sensible food, become the immortal and incorruptible bread, insatiable to those who hunger for Your sake, and an immortal fountain to those who thirst, and a resplendent robe to those who for Your sake are clothed in mean garments?
1:3150
For hearing these things spoken through Your heralds, I supposed that they came to pass only in the age to come and after the resurrection, and I did not know that they are rather being accomplished even now, when we stand in still greater need of them.
1:3151
These things I neither knew, all-holy King, nor was I ever seized with desire for them, nor did I ask to receive any of them from You; but, mindful of my sins, I sought only to find an intercessor and advocate for their forgiveness. As I said before, Master, I longed that, through his intercession and through my servitude to him, I might at least in the age to come obtain the remission of my many transgressions.
1:3152
But when I heard everyone with one accord declaring that there was no such saint in the present age, I fell into still greater sorrow.
1:3153
Nevertheless I never believed this, but answered such people—O Master Christ, as You know—and I said:
1:3154
Καί τοσοῦτον διάβολος τοῦ Δεσπότου Θεοῦ ἐγένετο δυνατώτερος, ἵνα πάντας ἐφελκύσῃ πρός ἑαυτόν καί εἰς τήν αὐτοῦ μερίδα ποιήσηται, ὥστε μή καταληφθῆναί τινα εἰς τό μέρος τοῦ Θεοῦ;
Has the devil become so much mightier than the Master God, that he should draw all men to himself and make them his own portion, so that not one is left over for God's portion?
1:3155
Therefore, as I think, O King who loves mankind, upon me, seated in the darkness of this life and in the midst of evils, You caused Your holy light to shine, and in that light You showed me Your saint.
1:3156
And in the same manner as You dealt with Your servant Paul—calling him while he persecuted You, through Your divine manifestation—for indeed, when he beheld You and said,
1:3157
'Who are You, Lord?'—You did not say to him, 'I am He who made heaven and earth,'
1:3158
'I am He who brought all things from non-being into being'; nor did You say,
1:3159
'the God of your fathers,' nor any other of the titles of Your glory, but You spoke to him this alone:
1:3160
'I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you persecute'—so that he might clearly know that You are the God who was made flesh for our sake, the very One whom he was persecuting. Even so did You deal with me also, Master, when You were pleased to point out to me Your holy Symeon.
1:3161
For when Your divine light had illumined all things and me, the wretched one, and had turned the night into brightest day, in that very light You deemed me worthy to behold him with awe, as though in heaven, in the very height of Your Godhead—standing near to Your divine glory, adorned neither with any crown, nor with a radiant garment, nor with a transfigured appearance, but such as he was when he lived among us and was seen daily upon the earth: even so did You show him to me in heaven.
1:3162
This was so that I might not reckon him who was with us to be one person, and him who appeared to me there to be another, and, going astray from the good shepherd, wander off—I, the lost sheep.
1:3163
Yet even by this wonder that had come to pass I, the miserable one, did not understand; but, little by little robbed of it through sloth and negligence, I fell back into my former evils, or into worse ones still.
1:3164
But You, compassionate and long-suffering King, did not even then turn away from me; rather, through that same saint You brought me back and deemed me worthy to fall down at his holy feet. With Your mighty hand and Your uplifted arm You led me out of the deceitful world and from the affairs and pleasures of the world, and separated me from them all, both in body and in soul. O the wonder! O Your love and compassion toward us, O God who loves mankind! You set me in the rank of those who serve You.
1:3165
After these things, then, Master, You granted me through the intercessions of Your saint not only the forgiveness of my unspeakable evils, but also all the aforesaid good things—or rather, You Yourself became all things to me.
1:3166
For when You had taken up Your dwelling in him and were shining forth with the light of Your divine glory, and I had drawn near to him in repentance and faith and taken hold of his feet, I straightway perceived a divine warmth; then a small dawning radiance; then a divine inbreathing from his words; then a fire within the heart, springing therefrom into ever-flowing streams through my tears; then a ray passing through my mind swifter than lightning; then, like a light in the night, there appeared to me a small and flame-like cloud, resting upon my head, while I lay prostrate on my face and made my supplication.
1:3167
Then it flew away, and after a little while was seen by me in heaven.
1:3168
Then, as I was pondering what this thing seen might be, something else, more marvelous than all these, took place.
1:3169
For while in my sleep I was being tempted by the wicked demons and, by their contrivance, was being dragged toward the passion of a nocturnal emission, and was resisting and calling out for help, I awoke, having escaped the hands of my tempters unharmed.
1:3170
Ὡς δέ καθ ἑαυτόν τήν ἔνστασιν καί τήν ἀνδρείαν, μᾶλλον δέ τήν ἀκινησίαν μου πρός τό πάθος ἐθαύμαζον, καί Πόθεν τοῦτο ἀσυνήθωςμοῦ λογιζομένου, τό τρόπαιον γέγονεν, ἵνα καί κοιμώμενος ἀντιμάχωμαι καί ἰσχυρότερος τῶν ἀντιπάλων καί ἐχθρῶν μου γίνωμαι καί κατά κράτος αὐτούς νίκην νικῶ παραδόξως διά Χριστοῦ;
And as I was marveling within myself at my firmness and manliness—or rather at my immovability against the passion—and was reasoning, 'Whence, in a manner so unaccustomed to me, has this triumph come about, that even in sleep I do battle and become stronger than my adversaries and enemies, and mightily and marvelously gain the victory over them through Christ?'—
1:3171
O the wonder! Straightway I saw within me Him whom I had supposed to be in heaven—I mean You, my Maker and King Christ—and then I knew that the victory was Yours, by which You caused me to conquer the devil.
1:3172
But even so I did not yet know, Master, that it was You who had fashioned me from clay, and who had bestowed on me all these good things.
1:3173
I did not yet know that You Yourself were my God and Lord, who art without arrogance.
1:3174
For I had not yet been deemed worthy to hear Your voice, so that I might recognize You; You had not yet said to me mystically, 'It is I.'
1:3175
For I was unworthy and unclean, still having the ears of my soul stopped up with the clay of sin, and my eyes held fast by unbelief and ignorance, and by the perception and mist of the passions.
1:3176
—being shown to me now in this way, now in another; but its unwonted character struck me with amazement at the wonder, while it filled my whole soul and heart with joy, so that I supposed my very body too was partaking of that ineffable grace.
1:3177
But who He was that was thus seen, I did not yet then clearly know.
1:3178
Meanwhile I saw the light more frequently—sometimes within, when my soul was enjoying calm and peace; sometimes it appeared far off, somewhere outside, or else was wholly hidden; and when hidden it wrought in me unbearable grief, for I reckoned that it would surely never appear again.
1:3179
Thus, then, You—the ineffable, the invisible, the intangible, the immovable, who art everywhere and always present in all things and fillest all things—being, so to speak, seen and hidden hour by hour, day and night, going away and coming, becoming unseen and suddenly appearing—little by little drove away the darkness within me, dispelled the cloud, thinned the density, cleansed away the rheum of my spiritual eyes, unstopped and opened the ears of my understanding, stripped off the veil of insensibility, and along with these lulled to sleep every passion and every fleshly pleasure, and banished it utterly from me.
1:3180
And by heaven I mean the soul that has been purified, in which You—invisibly, I know not how or whence coming, You who are everywhere present—are suddenly found and shine forth like another sun.
1:3181
Such are the wondrous works of God toward us, brethren!
1:3182
But as we ascend toward that which is more perfect, no longer, as before, does He who is formless and shapeless come formless and shapeless, or accomplish the presence and arrival of His light toward us in silence.
1:3183
—in a certain form, yet a form of God.
1:3184
For God is not in a figure or an impress, but, being fashioned in incomprehensible and unattainable and formless light, He is shown forth as simple—for we can say or express nothing further. Yet for the time being He is shown manifestly and is made known most knowably, and the Invisible One is seen exceedingly clearly; invisibly He speaks and hears, and, as a friend converses with a friend face to face, so He who is God by nature converses with those who by grace have been begotten of Him as gods; and as a father He loves and is loved by His sons very ardently, and becomes to them a strange sight and a most awesome thing to hear, which can neither be worthily uttered by them, nor endures to be concealed in silence.
1:3185
By longing for Him they are ever kindled, and are mystically inspired by Him; and sometimes they write, bewailing the passions of others, and sometimes they make a public triumph of their own falls.
1:3186
他們有時懷著感恩,述說臨到他們的恩惠與恩典的運行,便以神學的方式歌頌那以神聖大能改變了他們的主;
And sometimes, recounting with thanksgiving the benefits and workings of grace that have come to them, they hymn in theological manner Him who has divinely transformed them;
1:3187
and sometimes, if they hear anything spoken contrarily and erroneously concerning the salvation of our souls, correcting it according to the measure of knowledge given them, they write it down, adducing the testimonies from the divine Scriptures; and they are not able to remain wholly still, nor to take their fill of the narration.
1:3188
For they are no longer their own, but belong to the Spirit that is in them; and this Spirit both moves them and is in turn moved by them, and there come to be in them all those things which you hear spoken in the divine Scriptures concerning the kingdom of heaven: a pearl, a grain of mustard seed, leaven, water, fire, bread, the drink of life, a fountain living and leaping up, pouring forth rivers of spiritual words, words of divine life, a lamp, a couch, a bridal chamber, a bride, a bridegroom, a friend, a brother, and a father.
1:3189
Καί τί πολλά λέγων πειρῶμαι τά πάντα διεξελθεῖν καί ἰδού εἰσιν ἀναρίθμητα;
And why, saying much, do I attempt to go through them all, when behold, they are without number?
1:3190
ἤκουσε καί ἐπί καρδίαν ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἀνέβη, πῶς γλῶσσα μετρήσασα ταῦτα λόγῳ ἐκδιηγήσεται;
That which ear has not heard, nor has entered into the heart of man—how shall a tongue, having measured these things, recount them in words?
1:3191
For even though we possess all things within us, because we bear about within us God who bestows them, yet we can neither measure them out with the mind nor set them forth in words at all.
1:3192
Ταῦτα τοίνυν ἐγράψαμεν, πατέρες καί ἀδελφοί, οὐκ ἐνδείξεως χάριν, μή γένοιτοτί γάρ καί ἔχομεν ἡμέτερον ἐνδείξασθαι, εἰ μή ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός ἡμῶν ἁμαρτίας καί ἀκαθαρσίας καί ἀνομίας πολλάς, αἷς ὡς οἶμαι οὐδέ θαλαττία ψάμμος τῷ πλήθει συνεξισάζεται;
These things, therefore, we have written, O fathers and brethren, not for the sake of display—God forbid! For what have we of our own to display, save that, from our mother's womb, we have sins and uncleannesses and many iniquities, to whose multitude, as I think, not even the sand of the sea is equal?
1:3193
反倒是要顯明神奇妙的作為,並將它們陳明在你們面前——縱然不配,卻至少是按著我們的能力;
Rather, we make manifest the wondrous works of God and set them before you—though not worthily, yet at least according to our ability;
1:3194
and besides this, so that by this exposition we might benefit those who suppose that they possess the Holy Spirit unconsciously from divine baptism.
1:3195
因為這番話教導我們:起初在我們裏面的乃是全然的黑暗與幽暗,就是與神聖之光的隔絕——那時它也清楚地陳明了對神的無知;隨後是良心所生的責備;隨後是懼怕;隨後是對赦免諸債的渴望,那時人便為此尋求一位中保與幫助者,因他顯然不能獨自厚顏地親近,緣故是他被許多可羞的罪所壓;隨後是尋得那中保、牧人與代求者;
For the discourse teaches us the utter darkness and gloom that is in us at the first—that is, the estrangement from the divine light, when indeed it clearly sets forth also the ignorance concerning God; then the reproof that arises from conscience; then fear; then the desire for the remission of debts, when a man seeks for this an intercessor and helper, being plainly unable to draw near alone and shamelessly, because he is weighed down by many sins of shame; then the attaining of the intercessor and shepherd and advocate;
1:3196
and how, by the noetic illumination of the Spirit, he has beheld even this one—which shows the beginning of an illumination into which he was formerly uninitiated; and how, after the revelation had come to pass, the vision of the Spirit again passed away, and, being deprived of it, he fell back again into the darkness of many sins.
1:3197
And after these things it made clear also the second calling through the shepherd; then obedience, faith, humility, submission; and out of these the most manifest transformation that comes to be in us little by little in knowledge and contemplation—which transformation, if a man has not recognized as having come to pass within himself according to the exposition of the discourse, it is not possible that such a one has the Holy Spirit dwelling in him.
1:3198
But this discourse, as has been said by me above, going through these matters more fully, shows us not to be boasting, but to be recounting the wondrous works of God, which He works out of love of the good in those who seek Him with their whole soul and heart; so that every pretext and just disobedience may receive its recompense in the day when God shall judge the race of men—to whom belongs all glory, honor, and worship, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.
1:3199
Of our holy and great father Symeon the New.
1:3200
A Thanksgiving to God for the benefits that have come to him from Him.
1:3201
In which there is also treated spiritual prayer and the progress made therein.
1:3202
And concerning divine illumination, unerring contemplation, and love toward God.
1:3203
I give thanks to You, Master, Lord of heaven and earth, who didst foreordain me, before the foundation of the world, to come from non-being into being.
1:3204
I give thanks to You, that before the day and hour came in which You commanded me to be brought forth, You Yourself—the only immortal, the only almighty, the only good and lover of mankind—having come down from Your holy height, without departing from the Father's bosom, and having been made flesh and born of the holy Virgin Mary, refashioned me beforehand and gave me life beforehand, and freed me from the ancestral fall, and prepared beforehand my ascent into the heavens.
1:3205
And as I grew little by little, You Yourself both renewed me anew by Your holy baptism of regeneration, and adorned me with the Holy Spirit, and appointed an angel of light to be my guardian, and kept me unwounded, until my full stature, from the works of the adversary and the snares of the enemy.
1:3206
But since You have judged it right that we be saved, not by compulsion, but by our own free choice, You left me too to be honored with free will, and to display love toward You, freely chosen, out of the keeping of Your commandments. But I, the ungrateful and contemptuous one, like a horse loosed from its bonds, reckoning thus the worth of free will, sprang away from Your lordship and cast myself down into a precipice.
1:3207
And as I lay there, senselessly wallowing and being crushed yet more, You did not turn away, You did not let me lie and be defiled in the mire; but for the sake of the compassions of Your mercy You sent forth and led me up from there, and honored me more splendidly, and by Your unspeakable judgments You redeemed me from kings and rulers who wished to use me as a vessel of dishonor for the service of their own desires.
1:3208
Gifts of gold and silver, though I was a lover of money, You did not let me take; the glory and splendor of life, offered to me as the price for the selling-away of Your sanctification, You granted me to reckon as an abomination.
1:3209
But all these things—I confess to You, O Lord God of heaven and earth—counting them again as nothing, I, the wretched one, cast myself into a pit and into the slime of the deep, of shameful thoughts and deeds; and having gone down there, I fell in with the things hidden in the darkness, from which not only I myself alone, but not even the whole world gathered into one, could have led me up from there and delivered me from their hands.
1:3210
Yet as I was held fast there, pitiably and wretchedly dragged about and choked and mocked by them, You, the compassionate and man-loving Master, did not overlook me, did not remember my faults, did not turn away from my ungrateful mind, did not for long leave me to be willingly tyrannized by the robbers.
