因為他先前既說看見諸天開了,如今又在活物之上看見彷彿穹蒼的形像,活物在其下,拍動著翅膀——並非隨意而動,乃是回應那從上面傳來的聲音;
for having said above that he saw the heavens opened, now above the living creatures he beholds as it were a likeness of a firmament, and the living creatures lying beneath, moving their wings—not without reason, but in response to the voice borne from above;
1:222
for obeying that voice, they both moved them, and again kept them motionless.
1:223
And at the last, being at a loss, he introduced a comparison: 'like the voice of God Shaddai,' which Aquila and Symmachus rendered 'of the Almighty.'
1:224
For 'why,' he says, 'should I toil seeking images worthy of the reality, and nowhere find them? It suffices to point to the One who acts, and through Him to intimate the greatness of the sound;'
1:225
for being all-sufficient and almighty, He does all things easily, as He wills.
1:226
'And above,' he says, 'the firmament that was over their heads, there was as the appearance of a sapphire stone, the likeness of a throne upon it.'
1:227
And this form too hints at the profundity and invisibility of the divine nature.
1:228
他說:「密雲和幽暗在祂四圍。」同一位先知又說:「祂以黑暗為藏身之處。」那黑暗、密雲與幽暗都是表明神聖之不可見;
'For a cloud,' he says, 'and thick darkness are round about Him.' And again the same prophet: 'He made darkness His hiding place.' Now the darkness, the cloud, and the thick gloom are indicative of the divine invisibility;
1:229
for that unmingled and unapproachable light is to us darkness, since we cannot gaze upon it because of the weakness of our nature.
1:230
For if one who wishes to look closely at the sun's disc fixes his eye upon it more than he ought, he loses even his ordinary sight and reaps darkness from light; what would a man not suffer who dared to look upon the divine and unapproachable light? 'And upon the likeness,' he says, 'of the throne, there was a likeness as the appearance of a man upon it above.'
1:231
( κζʹ, κηʹ.)
(vv. 27, 28) 'And I saw as it were the appearance of amber, as the appearance of fire within it round about, from the appearance of the loins and upward;'
1:232
'and I saw, from the appearance of the loins and downward;'
1:233
'I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and its brightness round about.'
1:234
'As on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about.'
1:235
Everywhere he adds both 'likeness' and 'as,' teaching us not to stop at this point, but to know that each of the visions is fitted to the need at hand.
1:236
因為向以撒所作的應許,也包含我們的主救主耶穌基督按肉體的降生;
For the promise made to Isaac also embraces the birth according to the flesh of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ;
1:237
wherefore also the blessing of the nations was joined to the promise given to Isaac.
1:238
'For in thy seed,' He says, 'shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.' But when He foretold to him the bondage of his race, He did not appear so kindly, but showed also a smoking furnace and torches of fire passing between the divided pieces.
1:239
So too, wishing to console Jacob who feared Esau, He appeared as a man.
1:240
但起初祂向摩西顯出可畏之事——荊棘中的火,荊棘被火燒著卻沒有燒毀;
But to Moses at first He showed things full of dread—the fire in the bush, and the bush burning yet not consumed;
1:241
and after these things He conversed with him gently, showing nothing of the things able to produce terror.
1:242
And wishing to strike fear into Israel and to make known His own power, He shows the whole mountain smoking, and thunders crashing, and trumpets sounding, and thick darkness, and simply so terrified them that they brought a supplication to the prophet, that God should not speak with them, but that he himself should convey the divine words.
1:243
這同樣的異象之別,祂也向偉大的以利亞顯明了;
This same difference of visions He also showed to the great Elijah;
1:244
先有地震,然後有火,然後有大風崩裂山嶺、粉碎磐石,此後有微小柔和的聲音,主就在其中;
first an earthquake, then fire, then a wind rending the mountains and shattering the rocks, and after these a sound of a gentle breeze, and in it the Lord;
1:245
因為祂本以良善為樂,願以恆忍與溫柔來安排人間的事;
for He Himself delights in goodness, and with longsuffering and gentleness wills to dispense the affairs of men;
1:246
but great impiety and lawlessness prepares Him to use those other means as well.
1:247
因為那些手段並非出於祂自己的心意,乃是出於人的需要;
For those means proceed not from His own disposition, but from the need of men;
1:248
whereas goodness and love toward mankind are proper to His own nature.
1:249
所以當你聽見神有各樣的異象時,不要以為神是有多種形狀的;
When, therefore, you hear of various visions of God, do not suppose the Divine to be of many forms;
1:250
因為祂全然無形無體,是單純而非複合的,沒有形狀,不可見也不能見,並不受任何界限所限;
for He is altogether incorporeal and formless, simple and uncompounded, without shape, invisible and unseen, and circumscribed by no boundary;
1:251
然而祂顯出這些形象,是按當時的需要而塑造的;
yet He displays the appearances, shaping them to the need at hand;
1:252
καὶ.
在此處也是如此,祂既顯出那些可畏之事;
and here too, accordingly, He showed those fearful things;
1:253
but He also showed the benefaction to come for all men—I mean the incarnate dispensation of our God and Saviour.
1:254
一個是琥珀的樣式,一個是火的樣式;一個是承載者,一個是被承載者;
the one appearance of amber, the other of fire; the one bearing, the other borne;
1:255
因為神聖的本性披上了人性;
for the divine nature clothed itself with the human;
1:256
所以他說他所看見的上半部彷彿琥珀的樣式;
wherefore he says he beheld the upper part as the appearance of amber;
1:257
而從腰以下的部分則彷彿火的樣式;
but the part from the loins and downward as the appearance of fire;
1:258
那火暗示神聖的本性(祂說:「因為耶和華你的神乃是烈火」);
the fire hinting at the divine nature ('For the Lord your God,' He says, 'is a consuming fire');
1:259
and the amber the human.
1:260
For such is amber, having as it were a mixed appearance, and resembling neither gold nor silver, but being like a blend of both.
1:261
人的身體也是如此;
And such too is the human body;
1:262
因為它不單是土,也不是單獨的水、火或氣,乃是由四種元素合成的;
for it is not earth alone, nor water by itself, nor fire, nor air, but is compounded of the four elements;
1:263
or rather, such is the nature of man: neither a rational soul only, nor a mortal body only, but both together according to him.
1:264
因為神的道所取的人性,也藉著那內住的本性成為光明、燦爛、榮耀、不死而不朽的;
For indeed the humanity of God the Word became radiant and bright and glorious, immortal and incorruptible, through the nature that dwelt within it;
1:265
'And I saw as the appearance of amber, as the appearance of fire within it round about, from the appearance of the loins and downward, as the appearance of fire.' For the divine nature bore the human.
1:266
'And its brightness round about.'
1:267
「彷彿虹的樣式,就是下雨的日子雲中虹的樣式,那周圍光輝的樣式也是怎樣。」這些也表明神聖的恩賜;
'As the appearance of the bow, when it is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about.' And these things too are significant of the divine gifts;
1:268
for they benefit the human race, signifying and bringing the rain that comes from thence.
1:269
Having thus narrated all these things, the prophet added:
1:270
'This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.'
1:271
And he did not say, 'This is the nature of the Lord,' nor 'the glory of the Lord,' but 'the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.' For 'as He willed,' he says, 'having fashioned the appearance, He deemed me worthy of the vision.'
1:272
「我一看見,就臉伏於地。」這也是理所當然的;
'And I saw, and I fall upon my face.' And very fittingly;
1:273
'for I heard,' he says, 'one speaking to me, and He said to me:'
1:274
'Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak to thee.' And He addresses him as 'son of man,' all but saying: 'Do not forget thy nature, having been deemed worthy of a vision above thy nature, but know thyself;'
1:275
'neither remain in immoderate dread, since I pledge thee to take courage, but stand and hear the things spoken by me, not being overturned, but by thy standing signifying steadfastness.'
1:276
'For there came upon me,' he says, 'a spirit, and it took me up, and lifted me up, and set me upon my feet, and I heard Him speaking to me.'
1:277
For a certain divine energy, laying hold of me, drew me together, dissolved as I was by fear, and prepared me to stand and to hear the words that were being uttered.
1:278
'Son of man, I am sending thee to the house of Israel, those who provoke me, who have provoked me—they themselves and their fathers—and have transgressed against me even to this present day.'
1:279
誰能用言語衡量神愛人的心?哪一種心思能測透祂良善的汪洋?在他們無數的不虔與不法之後,祂並不放棄他們的救恩,雖然祂責備他們和他們的列祖背棄並違犯了所立的約,且直到今日仍執迷於邪惡;
Who could measure in words the divine love toward mankind? What mind could reach the ocean of His goodness? After their countless impieties and lawless deeds, He does not renounce their salvation, but while indeed accusing both them and their fathers as having transgressed and broken the covenants that had been established, and as having persisted in their wickedness even to this day;
1:280
但祂仍呼喚他們回轉,召那病入膏肓的得痊癒,並且這是在祂明知他們剛硬悖逆、不肯聽從的情況下所行的;
yet He calls them back, and summons to health those who are incurably sick, and this even though He knows their obstinacy and unwillingness to hear;
1:281
'And they are children stiff of face and hard of heart, to whom I send you, even to them.'
1:282
這就是說,他們厚顏無恥,不知羞愧臉紅,不肯被感化軟化;
That is to say, they are shameless, not knowing how to blush, unwilling to be softened;
1:283
neither persuaded by words of counsel, nor changed by the compulsion of punishments.
1:284
「主亞多乃如此說。」這「亞多乃」一詞本身也是「主」的意思;
'Thus saith Adonai the Lord.' Now the word Adonai itself also signifies 'Lord';
1:285
但它另外還帶有一種細微的含義;
yet it carries in addition another slight nuance:
1:286
'Thus saith the Lord,' he means, 'my Lord.'
1:287
'If then they will hear, or be dismayed—for it is a provoking house—yet shall they know that thou art a prophet in the midst of them.'
1:288
The phrase 'if then' is not indicative of ignorance.
1:289
因為那位在萬事發生之前就知道一切的,對將來的事毫無所不知;
For He who knows all things before they come to pass is ignorant of nothing that is to be;
1:290
「主啊,你已曉得一切,末後的與起初的。」因此,祂既確切地知道他們的頑梗不化,便加上「他們或」,藉此教導人意志的自主抉擇,就是若他們願意,他們是可能被改變的;
'Behold, O Lord, thou hast known all things, the last and the first.' Knowing therefore precisely their obduracy, He sets down the 'if then,' teaching through these words the free self-determination of the will, that it is possible for them to be changed if they should so will;
1:291
of the same kind is that which is spoken in the Gospel in the person of the Father:
1:292
「我要打發我的兒子到園戶那裡去,或者他們會尊敬他。」因為那裡的「或者」也不是表示疑惑;
'I will send my son to the husbandmen; perhaps they will reverence him.' For neither there does the 'perhaps' imply doubt;
1:293
因為祂知道他們不會尊敬他;
for He knew that they would not reverence him;
1:294
yet He does what befits His own righteousness.
1:295
For lest anyone should suppose His foreknowledge to be the cause of the outcome of events, He necessarily sets down the words of uncertainty, showing the self-determining power of the will, and reserving for Himself a defense in the day of judgment.
1:296
Being disobedient and unheeding, He sets every device in motion for their turning away from wickedness.
1:297
'What more shall I do to this my vineyard that I have not done?' And again through Hosea:
1:298
'What shall I do unto thee, O Ephraim? what shall I do unto thee, O Judah?' Yet nevertheless, though He knows them to be incurably sick, He offers the remedies, that in the day of judgment the disobedient may without contradiction receive the sentence pronounced against them, the divine benefactions being brought forward into the midst.
1:299
「好使你在你的言語上顯為公義,在你受審判時得勝。」因為我們的過犯,若與神的種種恩惠相對照察驗,就使我們理當受刑罰;
'That thou mightest be justified in thy words, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.' For our transgression, being examined side by side with the divine benefactions, justly subjects us to punishments;
1:300
and the righteous Judge Himself receives the victorious verdict even from the very persons being punished, since He has displayed every kind of loving-kindness, and has left no avenue of beneficence unmoved.
1:301
因此,「他們或聽,或驚惶」這句話,並非表示神的無知,乃是給他們悔改的餘地;
The phrase, then, 'If then they will hear or be dismayed,' does not signify ignorance on God's part, but gives them room for repentance;
1:302
since God, knowing also the disobedience of Pharaoh—for He says, 'I know that Pharaoh will not let you go, except by a mighty hand and by a high arm'—continued nonetheless in longsuffering.
1:303
'Do thou therefore also, O prophet,' He says, 'convey me and what is from me to those of thy own kind, that thou mayest become to them a procurer of benefit, and that they may learn that thou art a prophet in the midst of them, a minister of the divine words.'
1:304
「人子啊,你不要怕他們,也不要因他們的臉色驚惶,因為他們要如癲狂發作,四面圍攻你,你又住在蠍子中間;
'And thou, son of man, fear them not, neither be dismayed at their countenance; for they will be maddened, and will rise up against thee round about, and thou dwellest in the midst of scorpions;
1:305
be not afraid of their words, neither be dismayed at their countenance, for it is a provoking house.'
1:306
那些企圖設謀陷害人之人的邪惡,已足以成為輕視他們的理由;
The wickedness of those who attempt to plot against one is a sufficient ground for contempt;
1:307
因為他們是違背律法的人,也是被神的幫助所離棄的;
for they are transgressors, and destitute of the divine help;
1:308
祂說,因此無需懼怕這樣的人,縱使他們如蠍子般猛撲,縱使他們發出狂傲的言語,縱使他們帶著極大的暴怒與瘋狂衝來;
there is no need, then, He says, to dread such as these, though they dart like scorpions, though they bring forward insolent words, though they rush on with much frenzy and madness;
1:309
因為祂藉「他們要如癲狂發作」這句話暗示了這一點,這是取自牛群的比喻,牛蝱在牛群吃草時驅趕牠們,常逼使牠們沿著懸崖狂奔跌下;
for this He intimated by the phrase 'they will be maddened,' drawing a metaphor from oxen, which the gadfly drives as they graze, and often forces to be carried headlong down precipices;
1:310
for it is a kind of fly, sharper than any goad, that drives the oxen.
1:311
Thus, then, He designated their madness figuratively.
1:312
'And thou, son of man, thou shalt speak my words unto them, if then they will hear or be dismayed, for it is a provoking house.'
1:313
祂再次加上這不確定的說法,為要籌謀使他們悔改;
Again He has added the uncertainty, contriving their repentance;
1:314
for it is likely, He says, that they will be dismayed by the threat of punishment, and will fear the fulfillment of the threat, since they are unwilling to yield to the kinder words.
1:315
「人子啊,你要聽那對你說話的,不要像那悖逆之家那樣悖逆;
'And thou, son of man, hear him that speaketh unto thee, and be not thou a rebel, like the rebellious house;
1:316
open thy mouth, and eat that which I give thee.'
1:317
祂說:「不要違抗我所吩咐你的事;
'Do not gainsay,' He says, 'the things commanded thee by me;
1:318
neither emulate those who contradict, but fulfil the things enjoined.'
1:319
'And I looked, and behold, a hand stretched out toward me, and in it a roll of a book.'
1:320
'And He unrolled it before me, and in it there was written that which was behind and that which was before, and there was written therein lamentation, and song, and woe.'
1:321
'Son of man, eat this roll, and go and speak unto the children of Israel.'
1:322
With reason He said above, 'If then they will hear or be dismayed'; for the things brought to the prophet are full of horror—lamentation, and song, and woe—written over the whole roll, within and without.
1:323
By 'roll' he calls the rolled-up books.
1:324
For thus the ancients preserved the record of their writings.
1:325
'And He opened my mouth, and fed me with this roll.'
1:326
「祂對我說:人子啊,你的口要喫,你的肚腹要被這賜給你的書卷充滿;
'And He said unto me, Son of man, thy mouth shall eat, and thy belly shall be filled with this roll that is given unto thee;
1:327
and I ate it, and it became in my mouth as honey for sweetness,'
1:328
「在我口中比蜜更甜。」是的,為罪痛悔的哀號實在是甘甜、極其怡人的;
'sweeter than honey to my mouth.' Sweet indeed, and exceedingly pleasant, is the lamentation over sins;
1:329
for 'Dejection took hold of me,' he says, 'because of the sinners who forsake thy law'; and, 'I beheld the foolish, and I pined away, because they kept not thy oracles.' And his son also exhorts, saying:
1:330
'It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of laughter.' Thus it came to pass that to the prophet the eating of the roll was like honey, though it had in it nothing delightful or pleasing, but lamentation, and song, and woe.
1:331
Let no one suppose the eating of the roll to have been sensible and bodily.
1:332
For just as he beheld that vision spiritually, so also he partakes of this tasting spiritually.
1:333
'Son of man, go, enter into the house of Israel, and speak my words unto them.'
1:334
'Not unto many peoples of strange speech or of strange tongue, nor to those of a difficult language, whose words thou shouldest not understand.'
1:335
Here He plainly shows the difference between the apostolic and the prophetic labors.
1:336
因為後者(先知)所受託的乃是對一個民族的照管,他們出於這民族之中,並且說同樣的言語;
For the latter were entrusted with the care of one nation, springing from among them, and having the same language;
1:337
but the former were put in charge of the whole inhabited world, and of all the nations, according to the word of the Lord:
1:338
祂說:「你們要去,使萬民作我的門徒」——這些民有無數種不同的言語、各樣的風俗,與彼此相反的律法;
'Go ye,' He says, 'make disciples of all the nations'—which had countless and diverse tongues, manifold customs, and contrary laws;
1:339
然而,那些受託於眾多民族、不同言語、各樣習俗與五花八門律法的人,卻使全世界轉變得更美好;
yet nevertheless those who were entrusted with the many nations, and the diverse tongues, and the manifold manners, and the multifarious laws, transformed the inhabited world for the better;
1:340
但那些受託於那難以駕馭之百姓的人,雖忍受了許多勞苦,所收的果子卻不配得他們的勞苦;
but those who were entrusted with that stubborn people endured indeed much labor, yet reaped fruits not worthy of their labors;
1:341
and the cause was not the sloth of the husbandmen, but the perversity of those being cultivated.
1:342
'Even if I had sent thee to such as these, they would have hearkened unto thee.'
1:343
(ζʹ.)
(第七章)「但以色列家不肯聽從你,因為他們不肯聽從我;
(7.) 'But the house of Israel will not be willing to hearken unto thee, for they are not willing to hearken unto me;
1:344
for all the house of Israel are contentious and hard-hearted.'
1:345
祂也解明了「他們或聽」這句話,清楚地教導人祂並非無知,乃是確切地知道他們的悖逆;
He also interpreted the phrase 'If then they will hear,' clearly teaching that He is not ignorant, but knows precisely their disobedience;
1:346
同時祂也表明,這悖逆是出於他們的意志抉擇,而非出於本性;
and He signifies at the same time that this disobedience is from choice, not from nature;
1:347
因為祂說:「以色列家不肯聽從你,因為他們不肯聽從我」——意思是說:「你不要因不被聽從而憂傷;
for 'the house of Israel,' He says, 'will not be willing to hearken unto thee, for they are not willing to hearken unto me'—as if to say, 'Grieve not at being disobeyed;
1:348
因為他們既頂撞我,就是抗拒你所傳講的話語;
for in contradicting me they resist the words brought forward by thee;
1:349
而這頂撞的原因乃是好爭競的心志、心裡的頑梗,與心思的狂傲;
and the cause of the contradiction is the contentious disposition, and the obstinacy of the heart, and the insolence of the mind;
1:350
but fear not, being sent to such as these.'
1:351
For behold, I have made your face strong against their faces, and I will strengthen your strife against their strife.
1:352
And it shall be continually: harder than rock have I made your face; fear them not, neither be dismayed at their face, for it is a provoking house.
1:353
祂說,我既知道他們心思的邪惡,你當將一切懼怕從你的心意中驅除;
Knowing, He says, the wickedness of their disposition, banish all fear from your mind;
1:354
for I will give you strength proportioned to their gainsaying, and I will supply power commensurate with the toil, and I will make your brow harder than every rock, so that neither when reviled, nor when struck, nor when enduring any other of the terrible things, you may flee from the ministry of the word and abandon your care for these people.
1:355
And He said to me: Son of man, take into your heart all the words that I have spoken with you, and hear with your ears.
1:356
Thus says Adonai the Lord:
1:357
If perchance they will hear, if perchance they will yield.
1:358
祂說,你與他們交談時,不可說出任何自己的話,只要傳講我的話語,將我所吩咐你的傳給他們;
Utter nothing, He says, of your own when conversing with them, but minister with My words, and convey to them the things commanded you by Me;
1:359
for it is likely that they will reverence your labours, and fear My threats.
1:360
But the conditional expression again, as I have said, does not signify ignorance, but rouses the impulse of free will.
1:361
And the Spirit took me up, and I heard behind me the voice of a great earthquake, saying: Blessed be the glory of the Lord from His place.
1:362
For having received these commands, He says, I was hastening to fulfil the ministry, and I was not even permitted to use my feet, but by divine cooperation I was carried to those to whom I was sent.
1:363
And necessarily he receives also the sensation of the earthquake, so that being pricked by fear he might fulfil the ministry.
1:364
And he tells also of the hymn which he sent up when he perceived the earthquake:
1:365
ἔφη·
「從耶和華的所在顯出來的榮耀是應當稱頌的。」他既是蒙神親自教導,就這樣說了;
Blessed be the glory of the Lord from His place. And having been taught this by God Himself, he said it;
1:366
for to the blessed Moses, when he asked God to see Him with clear knowledge, He said: No one shall see My face and live. Then He adds:
1:367
「看哪,在我這裡有個地方,我要將你安置在磐石穴中,用我的手遮蓋你,你就得見我的背,卻不得見我的面。」這並非因為神性被分為面與背;
Behold, there is a place beside Me, and I will set you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with My hand, and you shall see My back parts, but My face you shall not see. Not because the Deity is divided into face and back parts;
1:368
but by the face is understood the divine essence, and by the back parts, the dispensations and benefactions which are wrought concerning us, many and of every kind.
1:369
He therefore calls His goodness a place, through which, being by nature uncontainable, He becomes containable, as far as is possible, by those who are worthy.
1:370
And I saw the sound of the wings of the living creatures beating one against the other, and the sound of the wheels following them, and the sound of the great earthquake.
1:371
因為這些話對我說了之後,那些活物就用翅膀行動,輪子也隨著;
For when these things were spoken to me, the living creatures moved, using their wings, and the wheels followed;
1:372
牠們一動,便產生極大的地震;
and a very great earthquake was produced by their movement;
1:373
for great was the din borne from every side.
1:374
And the Spirit lifted me up and took me, and I went aloft in the impulse of my Spirit.
1:375
For the grace of the divine Spirit, coming to be in me, prepared me, like some winged being, to cut through the air midway between heaven and earth.
1:376
And the hand of the Lord came upon me mightily. Again he signifies the very grace of the Spirit.
1:377
And I entered into the captivity aloft;
1:378
that is, not walking, but being carried through the air.
1:379
And I went round to those dwelling by the river Chobar, those who were there, and I sat there seven days, going about in their midst. For having reached, he says, those to whom I was appointed, I passed seven days keeping silence, awaiting the divine working.
1:380
And it came to pass after the seven days that the word of the Lord came to me, saying: Son of man, I have given you as a watchman to the house of Israel, and you shall hear a word from My mouth, and you shall warn them from Me.
1:381
Hold the type, He says, of a scout, whom men station upon some hill, commanding him to give forewarning of the coming incursions of the barbarians.
1:382
So you too, standing as it were upon some watchtower and lookout of prophecy, proclaim beforehand to the people what you foresee, and convey to them My words.
1:383
When I say to the lawless man, You shall surely die, and you have not warned him, nor spoken to warn the lawless man to turn him from his ways, that he may live, that lawless man shall die in his iniquity, and his blood will I require at your hand.
1:384
這威嚇是可畏而令人戰慄的,足以使那極其如石般剛硬的人也懼怕;
Fearful and full of shuddering is the threat, and sufficient to terrify even those who are exceedingly stony;
1:385
而藉著這威嚇所顯出的良善,也是難以言喻的;
and ineffable also is the goodness shining forth through the threat;
1:386
But since it is likely that one should offer every kind of treatment, while some are incurably sick and do not receive the healing offered, He necessarily adds:
1:387
And you, if you warn the lawless man, and he does not turn from his way and from his lawlessness, that lawless man shall die in his iniquity, but you shall deliver your soul.
1:388
祂說,你若行了當行的,盡了自己的本分,就必無罪;
Guiltless, He says, you shall be, doing what is fitting and contributing what is from yourself;
1:389
for even if his disease remain incurable, he alone shall pay the penalty of his disobedience.
1:390
當留意的是,祂在上文和此處都說,那執迷於違法之中的惡人必受刑罰;
It is fitting to observe that He said both above and here that the lawless man who persists in his transgression shall be punished;
1:391
無論他有無警戒他的人,就是教導他的人;
whether he has one to warn him, that is, to teach him, or whether he has not;
1:392
因為本性足以分辨當行之事;
for nature suffices for the discernment of what ought to be done;
1:393
and teaching is offered out of abundance, since the divine goodness devises every means for the salvation of men.
1:394
And when the righteous man turns from his righteousness, and commits a trespass, and I set the torment before his face;
1:395
他必死亡,因為你沒有警戒他;
he shall die, because you did not warn him;
1:396
in his sins he shall die, because his righteous deeds which he did shall not be remembered for him, and his blood will I require at your hand.
1:397
He did not say simply, If the righteous man sins, but, If he turns from his righteousness, and commits a trespass, that is, if he abandons the straight road which he had travelled, and turns aside to the other.
1:398
But he did not abandon the road he was travelling; rather, having stumbled and fallen, he rose again, and continued holding to the same journey.
1:399
祂說,義人若撇下自己的道路,去擁抱那相反的路,而你既知道此事,卻不責備這乖謬,也不竭力領他回歸原先的路,那人就必得著與那第二條路相稱的結局,喪失他一切先前的勞苦;
If therefore, He says, the righteous man, abandoning his own road, embraces the contrary one, and you, knowing this, do not reprove the perversity, nor exert yourself to lead him back to the former road, that man indeed shall find an end worthy of the second road, having lost all his former toil;
1:400
因為他走上了另一條路,而結局是相反的,也與各自的道路相稱;
for he came to another road, and the ends are opposite, and suited to the roads;
1:401
因為這一條路的結局是生命,那一條路的結局是死亡;
for the end of the one is life, but of the other death;
1:402
所以他必然喪失先前勞苦所得的利益,因為墮入了惡道的結局;
therefore he shall necessarily lose the gain of his former toils, having fallen into the end of the evil road;
1:403
but his lost life I will require from your hand, and I will exact from you the penalty for your negligence.
1:404
But if you warn the righteous man not to sin, and he does not sin, the righteous man shall surely live, because you warned him, and you shall deliver your own soul.
1:405
因為他藉著你的勸勉,逃脫了滅亡的深坑,得著與義路相稱的結局;
For he, through your exhortations, escapes the pit of destruction, and finds an end worthy of the righteous road;
1:406
and you shall be released from the reckoning, and shall escape the greatest danger, caring for the salvation of your neighbour.
1:407
And these things suffice to rouse us also to earnestness, and to prepare us to exercise all care for the brethren, and not to cease from doing and saying everything for their benefit, so that we may both flee the threatened punishment, and attain the promised salvation, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father be glory, together with the Holy Spirit, unto the ages of ages.
1:408
And the hand of the Lord came upon me, and He said to me:
1:409
Arise, and go out into the plain, and there it shall be spoken to you.
1:410
因為安靜正合宜於默想神聖的事;
For quietude is suited to the contemplation of divine things;
1:411
for the mind, being freed from the distractions without, and no longer divided this way and that, but turning in upon itself, is able more accurately to apprehend divine things.
1:412
And I arose, and went out into the plain;
1:413
and behold, there the glory of the Lord stood, like the vision, and like the glory which I saw at the river Chobar;
1:414
and I fall upon my face.
1:415
And the Spirit came upon me, and set me upon my feet.
1:416
He enjoys the vision more frequently, so that he may become more diligent about the ministry of the word.
1:417
但當留意的是,即使那些心思極其潔淨的人,也無法看見那與人性相稱的啟示;
But it is fitting to observe that not even those who are exceedingly pure in mind were able to behold the revelations commensurate with human nature;
1:418
just as indeed this prophet also, though he had already gained experience of the vision, falls down at once when he beholds it, and needs the grace that raises him up.
1:419
And He spoke to me, and said to me:
1:420
Enter, and shut yourself up in the midst of your house.
1:421
And thou, son of man, behold, bonds are laid upon thee, and they shall bind thee with them, and thou shalt not go forth from the midst of them.
1:422
And I will bind thy tongue to thy throat, and thou shalt be struck dumb, and shalt not be to them as a man reproving them, for it is a provoking house.
1:423
他處處加上「因為他們是悖逆之家」,藉此教導人不必懼怕那些肆無忌憚激怒神的人;
Everywhere he adds, 'for it is a provoking house,' teaching us not to fear those who without dread provoke God;
1:424
for the lawless are worthy only of contempt.
1:425
And when I speak to thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say to them:
1:426
Thus saith Adonai the Lord: He that heareth, let him hear; and he that is disobedient, let him be disobedient; for it is a provoking house.
1:427
And these words plainly show the free self-determination of the will.
1:428
他說:你只管把這教訓普遍地傳給眾人;
For do thou, he says, offer the teaching in common to all;
1:429
for each shall receive the recompense according to the choice of his own will.
1:430
人子啊,你要拿一塊磚,擺在你面前,將一座城,就是耶路撒冷,畫在其上;
And thou, son of man, take thee a brick, and thou shalt set it before thy face, and shalt portray upon it a city, even Jerusalem;
1:431
and thou shalt lay siege against it, and shalt build siege-works against it, and shalt cast up a mound against it, and shalt set camps against it, and shalt place batteries round about.
1:432
他奉命描畫耶路撒冷被圍困的景象;
He is commanded to portray the siege of Jerusalem;
1:433
而這圖畫要畫在磚上,是因居民的腐朽敗壞;
and the drawing is made upon a brick, because of the rottenness of its inhabitants;
1:434
因為他們沒有像那聰明人一樣把房子蓋在磐石上,反倒蓋在沙土上;
for they did not build their house like that prudent man, upon the rock, but upon the sand;
1:435
wherefore the rivers came, and the rain descended, and the winds blew, and beat upon their house, and it fell, and great was the fall thereof.
1:436
你要拿一個鐵鏊,放在你和城之間,作為鐵牆,又要對面攻擊那城,使城被圍困,你要圍攻它;
And thou, take thee an iron pan, and thou shalt set it as an iron wall between thee and the city, and shalt set thy face against it, and it shall be in a state of siege, and thou shalt besiege it;
1:437
this is a sign to the children of Israel.
1:438
先知奉命擔當神的表徵;
The prophet is commanded to bear the figure of God;
1:439
所以他被吩咐把一個鐵鏊放在自己與畫在磚上的城之間,藉此受教明白:神雖然臨在,並且察看那臨到耶路撒冷的事,卻不再以任何眷顧看待他們;
wherefore he is ordered to place an iron pan between himself and the city portrayed upon the brick, being thereby taught that even though God is present and beholds what is done against Jerusalem, He will not deem them worthy of any providential care;
1:440
but as though separated by an iron wall, He will seem neither to see what is being done, nor to hear those who supplicate.
1:441
But do these things, he says, giving as a sign the prophecy conveyed through deeds to those who now disobey and gainsay.
1:442
And thou shalt lie upon thy left side, and lay the iniquities of the house of Israel upon it, according to the number of the days, a hundred and fifty, which thou shalt lie upon it, and thou shalt bear their iniquities.
1:443
我已將他們兩家的罪孽定為日數給你,就是一百九十日;
And I have appointed to thee their two iniquities for a number of days, a hundred and ninety days;
1:444
and thou shalt bear the iniquities of the house of Israel, and shalt accomplish them.
1:445
在所羅門之後,到羅波安的時候,十二支派分裂了;那十支派有時稱為以法蓮,有時稱為以色列,而猶大和便雅憫則稱為猶大;
After Solomon, in the reign of Rehoboam, the twelve tribes were divided; and the ten were called sometimes Ephraim, sometimes Israel, while Judah and Benjamin were called Judah;
1:446
然而他們仍是一個民族,都是從以色列和亞伯拉罕承接而來的後裔;
yet nevertheless they were one people, deriving their descent from Israel and from Abraham;
1:447
因此,正如論到一個民族一樣,他把先前按分裂所說的話,如今又重新合在一起;
wherefore, as concerning one people, the things which he had spoken according to the division he again joined together;
