肉身的眼睛,乃是被造來作為形狀與顏色的審斷者;
The eyes of the body were fashioned to be judges of shapes and colours;
1:2
and when they are healthy they judge rightly and most justly,
1:3
但當它們處於衰弱之境時,便錯失了合宜之事,並嚴重地損害了公正;
but when they are in a weakened condition they miss what is fitting and gravely do violence to what is just;
1:4
for either they do not see at all, or, beholding one thing in place of another, they do not rightly discern the nature of what is seen.
1:5
然而,靈魂的視覺官能,甚至將這同一項功能供給了這些肉身的眼睛;
But the seeing faculty of the soul supplies this very activity even to these bodily eyes;
1:6
and it has received also another power from its Maker, by which it discerns not only the qualities of shapes and colours and odours and tastes and other such things, but also passes judgement by words, and by reasonings, and distinguishes the impious among these from the pious, and knows the difference between things divine and human, and, in a word, according to the wise Solomon, understands a parable and a dark saying, the words of the wise and their riddles.
1:7
但唯有當它處於良好狀態、脫離了不信之時,方能辨別這一切;
But it discerns each of these things when it is well-disposed and freed from unbelief;
1:8
yet when such a mist lies before it, it suffers the same as the eyes of the body, and sees one thing in place of another, or does not see at all, once the affliction has gained the mastery.
1:9
Falling into this disease, certain persons have undertaken to accuse the divine Scripture, and especially the prophetic oracles, as being veiled in obscurity.
1:10
To such as these the inspired Paul might fittingly say:
1:11
But even if our Gospel is veiled, it is veiled among those who are perishing;
1:12
「這國度的奧祕只叫你們知道,卻不叫那些人知道」;他又隨即講明緣由說,因為他們「看是看見,卻不曉得;聽是聽見,卻不明白」。他說,他們乃是自願地將無知的雲霧引到自己身上;
To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom, but to those it is not given; and, teaching the cause, he at once adds, that Seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not understand. For they of their own will, he says, draw upon themselves the cloud of ignorance;
1:13
for if they turn to the Lord, as the divine Apostle says, the veil is taken away.
1:14
所以,神聖之事並非對眾人皆晦澀難明,唯獨對那些自願瞎眼的人如此;
The divine things, therefore, are not obscure to all, but only to those who are wilfully blind;
1:15
whom it were fitting to consider and to perceive that among precious things nothing lies ready to hand for men.
1:16
因為珍珠被海洋的深淵所隱藏,王室紫袍的花色亦是如此;
For the pearl the deep of the sea hides away, and likewise the bloom of the royal purple dye;
1:17
金礦與銀礦的礦脈並不浮露於地面,而是被大地的懷抱所遮蓋;
and the veins of gold and silver do not lie upon the surface of the earth, but are covered over by her bosom;
1:18
在我們的家中,我們也將較貴重的財物存放在內室的庫房裡,並在門上加設閂鎖、門栓與封印;
and in our houses too we keep the more precious of our possessions within, in storerooms, setting bolts and bars and seals upon the doors;
1:19
and the more weighty of our counsels we are wont to disclose to the truer of our friends, but not simply to all.
1:20
But than all these things that have been mentioned the divine things are more venerable, and better by so much as the invisible surpasses the visible, and the intelligible the sensible, and the abiding the transient.
1:21
因為那唾手可得之物的擁有,實在是容易被人輕看的;
For truly the possession of things ready to hand is easily despised;
1:22
but the things gained with toil are thrice-desired and exceedingly lovely.
1:23
除此以外,還須在上述之言上再添一項,就是:那些神聖先知的預言含有對猶太人違法之罪的控訴,卻向列邦帶來美善之事的應許;
In addition to these things one must add yet another to what has been said, namely, that the oracles of the divine prophets contain an accusation of the transgression of the Jews, but bring to the nations a promise of good things;
1:24
and of necessity the prophecy had to be overshadowed, lest the Jews, who are wont to be enslaved to envy and dare to plot against the good things of others, should destroy the books that signified these things.
1:25
...of the prophecy, the events themselves bear witness.
1:26
For of old these things happened to be hidden from the Jews, in order that the written memorial of the blessing concerning the nations might be preserved.
1:27
但當那預言得了應驗,事實隨著所寫的話而來之時,先知的預言終於變得清晰明朗;
But when the prediction received its fulfilment, and the events followed upon the writings, then at last the oracles of the prophets became clear and manifest;
1:28
for those who read the prophetic books receive their interpretation from the events.
1:29
所以,任何人,尤其是那些在敬虔中受養育的人,切莫膽敢冒犯那神聖的靈,控訴祂的話語晦澀難明;
Let no one, therefore, and especially among those nurtured in piety, wax bold against the divine Spirit, laying the charge of obscurity against His words;
1:30
Uncover my eyes, and I shall consider the wondrous things out of Thy law. For he will assuredly obtain his request, since He has promised knowledge unto profit.
1:31
Come then, before the interpretation let us set forth the subject-matter summarily in a chapter.
1:32
這位先知是在約雅斤(他又名耶哥尼雅)被擄的第五年開始他的預言的;
This prophet began his prophecy in the fifth year of the captivity of Joachim, who is also Jechonias;
1:33
and this captivity was not the first, as it has seemed to some, but the third of Jerusalem, the fourth of Judah, and the sixth of all Israel.
1:34
因為提革拉毗列色首先擄掠了十支派中的大部分;
For first Theglathphalasar took captive the greater part of the ten tribes;
1:35
第二次,撒縵以色奴役了撒瑪利亞及其周圍的城邑後便撤離了;
and second, Salmanasar, having enslaved Samaria and the cities around it, departed;
1:36
第三次,西拿基立圍攻了猶大的其他城邑,並擄去了許多俘虜;
and third, Sennacherim besieged the other cities of Judea and carried off many captives;
1:37
but having, with great impiety, undertaken to march against Jerusalem, he received the wages of his blasphemy, and, losing his army by a heaven-sent plague, he reached his native land with but a few.
1:38
在他之後,第四次是尼布甲尼撒;他在約西亞之子約雅敬作王第三年登基,率領大軍進入猶大;
After him, fourth, Nabuchodonosor, having become king in the third year of the reign of Joachim the son of Josiah, came with a great host into Judea;
1:39
and, having taken many talents of gold and silver, and many captives from the royal line, and some of the sacred vessels, he departed thence, having laid a bond upon the king.
1:40
但過了不久,約雅敬不肯繳納所議定的貢賦;
But when a little time had passed, Joachim was unwilling to pay the tribute that had been agreed upon;
1:41
於是尼布甲尼撒在那王作王第十一年、也就是他自己執政第八年時,再次進攻耶路撒冷;
and Nabuchodonosor, in the eleventh year of that king's reign, and the eighth of his own rule, again marched against Jerusalem;
1:42
他殺了約雅敬,並下令將他從城牆上拋下,且長時間任其暴屍不得埋葬;
and he slew Joachim, and commanded that he be cast from the wall, and left him unburied for a very long time;
1:43
and, taking all those in office as captives, and having appointed as king over those who were left Joachim, who is also Jechonias (and this one was the son of Joachim), he set off for Babylon.
1:44
但過了三個月零幾天,他得知此人叛變,便再次前來;
But when three months and a few days had passed, learning that this man had rebelled, he came again;
1:45
and this man he bound and led away captive together with no small multitude, and he set up as king this man's uncle, brother of the former Joachim and son of Josiah, Mathanias, who is also Sedekias, having taken oaths from him that he would both keep his goodwill toward him and render the tribute at the appointed time.
1:46
但當此人也再次背棄了他的誓言,既不肯繳納貢賦,又不保守忠誠,反倒投奔了埃及人尋求庇護時,尼布甲尼撒便召集了大軍前來,連人帶城地攻取了那城,並放火焚燒了王宮、神聖的殿宇,以及一切華美的房屋;
But when this man too again transgressed his oaths, and was neither willing to render the tribute nor kept his goodwill, but had fled for refuge to the Egyptians, Nabuchodonosor, having gathered a great host, came, and, taking the city with all its inhabitants, he set fire to the palace, and the divine temple, and every splendid dwelling;
1:47
他將一切逃過饑荒之毀滅與戰爭之殺戮的人,盡都擄了去;
and all those who had escaped the destruction of famine and the slaughter of war he led away as captives;
1:48
and all the vessels also, not only those which were made of the material of silver and gold, but also the pillars fashioned of bronze, and all the rest, he transported to Babylon.
1:49
for thus indeed does the prophecy begin:
1:50
In the third year of the reign of Joachim king of Judah, came Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it, and the Lord gave into his hand Joachim king of Judah, and part of the vessels of the house of God; and, a little further on:
1:51
And the king, it says, spoke to Asphanez, his chief eunuch, to bring in some of the sons of the captivity of the sons of Israel, and of the seed of the kingdom.
1:52
由此可見,耶路撒冷的第一次被擄是發生在約雅敬作王第三年;
The first captivity of Jerusalem, then, took place in the third year of the reign of Joachim;
1:53
and this was the first year of the reign of Nabuchodonosor.
1:54
And this the same prophet teaches us, speaking thus:
1:55
and the third [captivity took place] in the first year of the reign of Jechonias son of Joachim, and the ninth of the rule of Nabuchodonosor.
1:56
所以,以西結是在約雅斤(他又名耶哥尼雅)被擄第五年開始他的預言的;
Ezekiel, therefore, began his prophecy in the fifth year of the captivity of Joachim, who is also Jechonias;
1:57
and this was also the fifth year of the reign of Sedekias, who had been appointed king of the Jews in place of Jechonias.
1:58
由此可見,在這同一時期,這些人在巴比倫說預言;
In these same times, then, these men were prophesying in Babylon;
1:59
while in Judea Jeremiah, and Sophonias, and Urias the son of Samaias.
1:60
For in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah the blessed Jeremiah began his prophecy, and Sophonias too, it says, made his prophecy in the time of King Josiah.
1:61
But Urias the son of Samaias, having prophesied in the time of the former Joachim and having foretold grievous things, endured an unjust slaughter at the hands of that king's murderous cruelty.
1:62
Of those, therefore, who prophesied at the time of the captivity, the last is the divine prophet Ezekiel.
1:63
但哈該、撒迦利亞和瑪拉基則是在歸回之後說預言的;
But Aggaeus, and Zacharias, and Malachias prophesied after the return;
1:64
這位先知看見了充滿敬畏與戰慄的神聖啟示;
and this prophet beholds divine revelations full of awe and dread;
1:65
and he foretells not only the utter destruction of the Jews, but also that of the Tyrians, and Sidonians, and of the other foreign peoples, both Moabites and Ammonites, and Idumeans, and, in addition to these, the Egyptians.
1:66
And he foretells also the deliverance of the Jews from the captivity, and the rebuilding of the divine temple, and countless other things, which we shall reserve for the detailed interpretation, lest we extend the introduction to too great a length.
1:67
Having therefore besought, through the prophet, the very God of the prophet to impart to us the gift of knowledge, come, let us lay hold of the interpretation.
1:68
And it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month.
1:69
有些人以為這第三十年乃是禧年的第三十年;
To some it has seemed that the thirtieth year is that of the Jubilee;
1:70
and the Jews call the Jubilee the number of the fifty years.
1:71
For just as the Romans reckon the recurring cycle of time by fifteen years, so the Jews reckon it by fifty.
1:72
Some have said that the time of the prophecy was the thirtieth year of these fifty years.
1:73
But I, first searching for the time in the chronicles, found that it was the fifth year of the captivity of Jeconiah, contemporaneous not with the thirtieth year of the Jubilee, but with the twenty-fifth year.
1:74
Then, considering how none of the holy prophets had ever anywhere indicated this time, I searched and found that this was the thirtieth year of the captivity.
1:75
For a little further on this same prophet is commanded to lie upon his right side and to take upon himself the sins of Judah for forty days, each day being reckoned as a year.
1:76
But going back and searching out the time, I find that the captivity had come to pass not thirty years before, but thirteen years before.
1:77
Yet God, being good and loving toward mankind, is accustomed to reckon the time of chastisement from His own sentence, not from the outcome of events.
1:78
So also He did in the case of the patriarch Abraham.
1:79
For having said, 'Your seed shall be a sojourner in a land not their own, and they shall enslave it and afflict it four hundred years,' He did not allow it to spend all this time among the Egyptians, but reckons the number of the four hundred years from the sentence.
1:80
And in the case of Noah, too, having granted a fixed term of a hundred and twenty years for repentance, when He beheld the increase of lawlessness, He did not wait for the completion of the sentence, so that He might halt the course of sin.
1:81
So then here too we shall find the number of thirty years, taking the sentence of God as the beginning of the reckoning.
1:82
Now God decreed the captivity and servitude of the Jews in the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah.
1:83
因為當大祭司希勒家發現摩西的律法被埋沒不見(因為當時猶大境內盛行如此大的不法,以致連神聖的典章都被完全遺忘),王讀了律法,思想到百姓所膽敢行的與律法何等直接相悖,因此極其驚懼,便懇求大祭司使神息怒;於是大祭司就去見女先知戶勒大,她是一位敬虔的婦人,並且謹守神的律法;
For when Hilkiah the high priest had found the Mosaic Law buried out of sight (for so great a lawlessness prevailed in Judea that even the divine ordinances had been consigned to utter oblivion), and then when the king had read it and had considered how directly contrary to the Law were the deeds daringly committed by the people, and being on this account greatly terrified, and having entreated the high priest to render God propitious, the high priest went to Huldah the prophetess, a godly woman and a keeper of the divine laws;
1:84
And she, becoming inspired and full of the divine Spirit, said to him:
1:85
Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:
1:86
Say to the man who sent you to me:
1:87
看哪,我必降災禍與這地方和其上的居民,就是猶大王所讀那書上的一切話;
Behold, I am bringing evils upon this place and upon those who dwell in it, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read;
1:88
因為他們離棄了我,向別神燒香,用他們手所作的一切惹我發怒;
because they have forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands;
1:89
所以我的忿怒必向這地方發作,總不熄滅;
and My wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched;
1:90
But to the king of Judah, who also sent you to seek the Lord, thus shall you say to him:
1:91
Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:
1:92
因你聽了我的話,你的心也已悔改,並且在我面前自卑;當你聽見我指著這地方和其上的居民所說的話,說這地必成為荒場,你便撕裂衣服,在我面前哭泣,我也應允了你,這是耶和華說的;
Because you have heard My words, and your heart has been touched with repentance, and you have humbled yourself before My face, when you heard all that I spoke against this place and against those who dwell in it, that it should become a desolation, and you have torn your garments and wept before Me, I also have heard you, says the Lord;
1:93
is it not so? Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be brought to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the evils which I am bringing upon this place and upon those who dwell in it. These things the book of Chronicles also teaches.
1:94
這些事乃是在約西亞作王第十八年所行、所說的;
Now these things were done and spoken in the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah;
1:95
and he reigned thirty-one years.
1:96
因此,從第十八年到第三十一年,共有十四年;
So then from the eighteenth to the thirty-first year there are fourteen years;
1:97
在他之後約哈斯作王三個月,這三個月必須併入這些年數,因為那預言乃是在第十八年的八月發生的;
and after him Jehoahaz reigned three months, which must be joined together with these years, because the prophecy took place in the eighth month of the eighteenth year;
1:98
then, joining the eleven years of Jehoiakim to the preceding years, we shall find twenty-five.
1:99
But the three months of Jeconiah and the few days we shall in turn substitute for the remaining months of the eighteenth year.
1:100
把耶哥尼雅被擄的五年加在這二十五年上,我們便得三十年之數;
And having added the five years of the captivity of Jeconiah to the twenty-five, we shall find the number of thirty years;
1:101
and thus we shall be able to grasp the truth of the seventy years of the captivity as well.
1:102
the time is completed as seventy years.
1:103
但凡願意計算聖殿荒涼七十年的人,讓他從西底家第十一年開始算起;
But whoever wishes to reckon the seventy years of the desolation of the temple, let him begin from the eleventh year of Zedekiah;
1:104
因為那時神聖的殿被焚燒了;
for it was at that time that the divine temple was set on fire;
1:105
The prophet therefore says that:
1:106
In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, I was in the midst of the captivity by the river Chebar, and the heavens were opened, and I saw a vision of God.
1:107
this is the fifth year of the captivity of King Joachim.
1:108
他自己也清楚地教導我們,這並非僅僅是被擄的第五年,而是約雅斤王被擄的第五年;
And he himself taught us plainly that it is not simply the fifth year of the captivity, but of the captivity of King Joachim;
1:109
如我所說,這人就是耶哥尼雅,他作王三個月零幾日;
and this man, as I said, was Jeconiah, who reigned three months and a few days;
1:110
for his father Joachim was slain in Jerusalem in the eleventh year of his own reign.
1:111
他說天開了,並非按著真實與實際,而是按著屬靈的洞見;
And he said that the heavens were opened, not in truth and reality, but in spiritual contemplation;
1:112
'And I saw,' he says, 'a vision of God.' Not the essence of God, but a vision; a certain revelation, and as it were an impression, such as is attainable by human nature.
1:113
'And I was in the midst of the captivity.' The godly man among the ungodly, the righteous man among the lawless.
1:114
'And the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel the son of Buzi, the priest, in the land of the Chaldeans, by the river Chebar.'
1:115
這兩者都是聖靈的恩賜;
and both are gifts of the Spirit;
1:116
他也提到他蒙受神聖啟示的地域和地點,藉這些話指明許多事;
and he mentions both the country and the place where he was deemed worthy of the divine revelation, indicating many things by these words;
1:117
首先,指明神性是不受限量的,祂的權能不僅在於耶路撒冷,也不僅管轄猶太人,而是萬有的創造者和主宰;
first, that the Deity is uncircumscribed, having His authority not in Jerusalem alone, nor being Lord of the Jews only, but existing as Maker and Ruler of all;
1:118
and this also declares His ineffable goodness, that even when He had delivered them over to captivity, He does not leave them uncared for, but deems them worthy of all forethought and of the befitting solicitude.
1:119
And He deems him worthy of the vision by the waters, foreshadowing the salvation of all mankind, and prefiguring the knowledge of God that shall come to the godly through the regeneration of water.
1:120
照樣,那井和水也促成了婚姻;
so too the well itself and the water occasioned the marriage;
1:121
這事也發生在他以前的先祖身上,不僅是雅各,也有以撒。但讓我們回到解釋上;
and this happened also to the patriarchs before him, not to Jacob only, but also to Isaac. But let us return to the interpretation;
1:122
for the discourse does not at present have its impulse toward these matters.
1:123
'And the hand of the Lord was upon me.' Thus he called the working of the divine Spirit.
1:124
For indeed the divinely-inspired Paul, when he brought chastisement upon Elymas who resisted him, spoke thus:
1:125
'Behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a season.' And it was the working of the divine Spirit, as Paul himself says, in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Spirit of God.
1:126
'The hand of the Lord came upon me,' he says.
1:127
'And I looked, and behold, an uplifting wind came from the north, and a great cloud was in it, and brightness round about it, and flashing fire.'
1:128
It is necessary first to state the cause of the revelation, and then in this way to bring forward the interpretation part by part.
1:129
當時有許多假先知抵擋真先知;
Many false prophets at this time were speaking against the prophets;
1:130
and the blessed Jeremiah especially teaches us this.
1:131
For when God had commanded him to wear a yoke and to foretell the captivity of both the king and all the people, a certain false prophet named Hananiah, having broken these bonds, spoke against the things declared by the prophet, lying outright, and crying aloud that not only would the city not be overthrown, but that even those who had already been taken captive before would return before long.
1:132
要預言那被奴役之事,並寫信給在巴比倫被擄的人,叫他們蓋造房屋,栽種葡萄園;
to foretell the enslavement, and to write to those held captive in Babylon, both to build houses and to plant vineyards;
1:133
inasmuch as the sentence of the seventy years was unerring.
1:134
因此,耶利米不僅需要在猶大述說並記載這些事,那些在被擄之地的人也需要藉著他們當中的先知得知這些事;
It was necessary therefore that Jeremiah should not only say and write these things in Judea, but that those in the captivity should also learn them through the prophets among them;
1:135
the prophet, however, sees the utter destruction that was to come upon Jerusalem.
1:136
因為「有一陣捲起的暴風從北方颳來」所表明的正是此意,或如西馬庫所譯的「如狂風橫掃」;那風的猛烈表明巴比倫人的來襲;
For this is what is signified by 'an uplifting wind came from the north,' or, as Symmachus rendered it, 'sweeping like a tempest'; and the vehemence of the wind signifies the onset of the Babylonian;
1:137
那極大的雲表明矛槍、標槍和各樣箭矢如洪水般傾瀉;
and the very great cloud signifies the deluge of spears, javelins, and arrows of every kind;
1:138
那閃爍的火不僅表明所帶來的恐懼,也表明那城藉火而致的毀滅;
and the flashing fire signifies not only the terror that was brought on, but also the destruction of the city that came about through fire;
1:139
and the brightness round about signifies the glory of God that was manifested through the punishment.
1:140
因為他們既不從恩惠中得益,也不願藉那些恩惠認識那施恩者,就藉著刑罰領受了對祂的認識;
For since they had not profited from the benefits, nor were they willing from those benefits to recognize their Benefactor, they receive the knowledge of Him through the punishment;
1:141
「在我被擄之後,我就悔改了。」——「其中好像火中發光的琥珀,又有光輝在其內。」到此為止,他將整個異象一併向我們啟示;
After my captivity I repented. — 'And in the midst of it, as the appearance of amber in the midst of the fire, and radiance within it.' Up to this point, then, he has disclosed to us the whole revelation together;
1:142
but from here on he proceeds to the exposition part by part.
1:143
'And in the midst, as the likeness of four living creatures.'
1:144
凡是有理性的都稱為「活物」,人是,天使也是;
A rational being is called a 'living creature'—both man and angel;
1:145
but the one is a mortal rational being, the other an immortal rational being.
1:146
But who could clearly interpret the revelation, when the prophet himself grew faint in the very telling of it? For he did not simply say that he beheld four living creatures, nor even the likeness of living creatures, but 'as the likeness of four living creatures'—so that it is plain that the divinely-inspired prophets did not behold the very natures of the invisible beings, but certain images and impressions shown by the Bountiful One for each particular need.
1:147
He therefore tells us also the forms of the living creatures that appeared to him.
1:148
'For this,' he says, 'was their appearance: there was the likeness of a man in them.'
1:149
( ϛʹ.)
(6.) 'And each had four faces, and each had four wings.'
1:150
'And their legs were straight, and their feet were winged, and there were sparks like flashing bronze, and their wings were light.'
1:151
'And the hand of a man was beneath their wings upon their four sides.'
1:152
他說,那些顯現之物的形狀是直立的,並且像人;
The form of the beings that appeared, then, he says was upright and resembling a man;
1:153
and each was four-faced and four-winged, and he said they had hands equal in number to their wings, and that their feet too were full of feathers.
1:154
Through the number of the faces and of the wings, of the powers that bear the divine form, he intimates the ever-pervading oversight of God the King of all.
1:155
那有翅膀之特質表明牠們本性的敏捷;
The winged quality signifies the swiftness of their nature;
1:156
那如同最明亮之銅的火花,則表明牠們心思的光輝與純潔;
while the sparks resembling most brilliant bronze signify the brightness and the purity of their understanding;
1:157
and the hands hidden beneath the wings signify their invisible and manifold activity.
1:158
'They did not turn as they went; each moved straight before its face.'
1:159
因為一個人向北而行,若隨後想轉往南去,就必然要轉身,因他生來只有一張臉;
For a man traveling toward the north, then wishing to move over to the south, is of necessity turned around, since it has fallen to his lot to have but one face;
1:160
but for those whose faces equal in number the four regions of the inhabited world, there is nothing 'southward,' for on every side a face beholds all things, and it goes wherever it wishes and has no need of turning.
1:161
'And the likeness of their faces,' he says, 'was the face of a man, and the face of a lion on the right for the four, and the face of an eagle for the four, and the face of an ox on the left for the four.'
1:162
但沒有人可以以為那些不可見的能者具有野獸與無理性動物的形像;
But let no one suppose that the invisible powers bear the images of wild beasts and irrational animals;
1:163
for through these he hints at other things:
1:164
藉那獅子,表明王權;
through the lion, kingship;
1:165
藉那牛犢,表明祭司的職分;
through the ox, priesthood;
1:166
因為為大祭司要獻上一隻公牛犢;
for on behalf of the high priest a single ox was offered;
1:167
藉那鷹,表明豫言;
and through the eagle, prophecy;
1:168
for that creature flies high and is exceedingly keen of sight,
1:169
and from afar it foresees things to come.
1:170
'And their wings,' he says, 'were spread out above for the four; for each two were joined to one another, and two covered over their bodies.'
1:171
又表明牠們不越過所定給牠們的界限;
And that they do not overstep the bounds appointed for them;
1:172
牠們展開那兩個翅膀,以所蒙賜下的觀想為樂;
but the two wings they spread out, delighting in the contemplation granted to them;
1:173
and with the two they cover their bodies, content with their ignorance of hidden things, and not contending to learn what it is not lawful to learn.
1:174
'And each went straight before its face;'
1:175
'wherever the spirit was, there they went, and they did not turn back.'
1:176
It signifies the obedience of the invisible powers in all things, and that they did not forsake the ordained way.
1:177
'Bless the Lord, all you His angels, mighty in strength, who do His word, hearkening to the voice of His words.' (verses 13, 14)
1:178
'And in the midst of the living creatures there was, as the appearance of coals of burning fire, as the look of lamps whirling together among the living creatures, and the radiance of the fire, and out of the fire went forth lightning.'
1:179
'And the living creatures ran and returned, like the appearance of the bezek.'
1:180
西馬庫將此譯作「好像閃電之光的形狀」。這異象是可畏的,充滿戰慄,並且豫示著刑罰的威嚇;
This Symmachus rendered as 'like the appearance of a ray of lightning.' The vision is fearful, and full of shuddering, and forewarns of a threat of punishment;
1:181
因為那火炭、那旋轉的火把、那從其中射出的閃電、活物往來的奔走,以及從奔走中發出的光芒,這一切都表明將要臨到的災禍;
for the coals of fire, and the whirling lamps, and the lightning sent forth from thence, and the running of the living creatures hither and thither, and the flash emitted from their coursing—all these are indicative of the evils to come;
1:182
'Send forth Your arrows, and You shall throw them into confusion.' (verses 15, 16)
1:183
'And I looked, and behold, one wheel was upon the earth, close beside the four living creatures.'
1:184
'And the appearance of the wheels and their construction was like the appearance of Tharshish.'
1:185
按照西馬庫的譯法是「好像紅玉的形狀」。——「這四個輪有一樣的樣式,牠們的形狀與作工都是一樣的。」他看見每一個活物旁邊都有一個輪子隨從,樣式如同紅玉;
According to Symmachus, 'like the appearance of jacinth.' — 'And there was one likeness in the four, and their appearance and their working was one.' In each of the living creatures he beheld one wheel following it, having the appearance of jacinth;
1:186
and he said he beheld no difference among them, but that the four exactly resembled one another.
1:187
'For their appearance,' he says, 'and their working was one, as it were a wheel within a wheel.'
1:188
'They went upon their four sides, and they did not turn as they went, nor did their backs.'
1:189
'And they had height, and they were fearful.'
1:190
Just as he calls the living creatures four-faced, the word thereby intimating the all-pervading oversight of God,
1:191
so also he interprets the form of the wheels: 'as it were,' he says, 'a wheel within a wheel;'
1:192
這一點,人若在心中取兩個圓圈,把其中一個十字交叉地穿入另一個,便能看明;
and this a man could perceive by taking two circles in his mind and threading the one through the other crosswise;
1:193
for such a figure, though set upon the same base, admits of motion toward the four quarters—I mean the eastern and the western, the northern and the southern.
1:194
This, then, the blessed prophet says: 'As it were a wheel within a wheel, they went upon their four sides, and they did not turn as they went;'
1:195
因為這樣的形狀無須轉身;
for such a figure needs no turning about;
1:196
for moving from the same base into each of the quarters, it readily sets off.
1:197
And this likewise signifies the everywhere-present presence of God, these things being contemplated in a grosser and more corporeal manner because of human weakness.
1:198
'And I saw them, and behold, their backs were full of eyes round about, for the four.' (verses 19–21)
1:199
'And when the living creatures went, the wheels went close beside them; and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.'
1:200
'Wherever the cloud was, thither the spirit pressed on to go;'
1:201
'the living creatures went, and the wheels were lifted up together with them, because the spirit of life was in the wheels.'
1:202
'When they went, these went; and when they stood, these stood; and when they were lifted up from the earth, these were lifted up together with them, because the spirit of life was in the wheels.'
1:203
This the blessed Paul clearly teaches us, when he enumerates the orders of the invisible natures and ranks certain 'Thrones' together with the other powers.
1:204
'For in Him,' he says, 'were all things created;'
1:205
「萬有都是藉著祂造的,又是為祂造的。」由此可見,那些座位也是有理性、無形體的一種構成;
'all things were created through Him and unto Him.' Therefore the Thrones too are a rational and incorporeal system;
1:206
因此先知也說,生命之靈在輪中,由此那運動便是自發的、出於意願的;
wherefore the prophet also says that the spirit of life was in the wheels, whence too the motion was spontaneous and willing;
1:207
因為並沒有轅或軛加在這些活物身上;
for neither pole nor yoke was laid upon the living creatures;
1:208
but the cloud led the way, while that forceful and vehement spirit followed after.
1:209
The divine chariot ran of itself, the living creatures going before, and the wheels moving spontaneously, and being borne toward the four quarters without turning about.
1:210
他說:「因為牠們的輞滿有眼睛」——就是說,牠們充滿了知識;
'For their backs,' he says, 'were full of eyes'—that is, they were filled with knowledge;
1:211
「基路伯」一詞的意義也顯明了這一點;
This too the interpretation of the word 'Cherubim' makes clear;
1:212
for when rendered into the Greek tongue, the name means 'a multitude of knowledge.'
1:213
'And a likeness,' he says, 'was over the head of the living creatures, as it were a firmament, like the appearance of terrible crystal, stretched out over their heads above.'
1:214
'And under the firmament their wings were stretched out, fluttering the one toward the other;'
1:215
'each had two covering their bodies.'
1:216
'And I heard the sound of their wings as they fluttered, like the sound of many waters, like the voice of God Shaddai;'
1:217
'and when they went, the sound of speech, like the sound of a camp; and when they stood still, their wings were let down.'
1:218
'And behold, there was a voice from above the firmament that was over their heads;'
1:219
'when they stood still, their wings were let down.'
1:220
這位聖先知處處都用「形像」一詞,教導我們說:他所見的乃是神聖之事的一種略影,而非那不可見者本身的本質;
Everywhere the divine prophet sets down the word 'likeness,' teaching us that he beheld a kind of shadowy sketch of divine things, and not the very nature of things invisible;
