but as having stumbled and been corrupted, on account of the idolatry that followed afterward.
1:1250
至於「無人扶她起來」這句話,乃是指明她得不著任何人的援助;
And the phrase, 'There is none to raise her up,' signifies that she shall enjoy no human succor;
1:1251
for when the God of all opposes, neither the king of the Egyptians nor any other was able to defend them.
1:1252
He foretells also the fewness that would come upon them.
1:1253
祂說:「那出去一千人的城,必剩下一百;那出去一百人的城,必剩下十個。」然而至終你們至少要離棄伯特利和吉甲,並在誓約之井旁事奉偶像之事,尋求我的眷顧;
'For the city,' He says, 'from which a thousand went forth, shall have a hundred left, and that from which a hundred went forth shall have ten left.' Yet at length at least, forsaking Bethel and Gilgal, and the idolatry beside the Well of the Oath, seek out My providence;
1:1254
for from this you shall obtain life.
1:1255
But Bethel and Gilgal, together with the idols, shall be delivered up to the enemies.
1:1256
And it is manifest madness, not only to take no remembrance of Abraham's piety from that well, but even beside it to dare impiety.
1:1257
「你們要尋求主,就必存活,免得約瑟家如火發旺,燒滅它,以色列家中無人撲滅。」我們從這些話清楚學到:罪為我們點燃了災禍的火焰;
'Seek the Lord, and you shall live, lest the house of Joseph blaze up like fire and devour it, and there be none to quench it for the house of Israel.' From these words we plainly learn that sin kindles for us the flame of evils;
1:1258
but affection and disposition toward God procure life for us.
1:1259
'The Lord who executes judgment on high, and has set righteousness on the earth.' 'He decrees,' He says, 'what He wills, being just, and the things judged receive their conclusion upon the earth.'
1:1260
'He who makes all things, and transforms them, and turns the shadow of death into morning, and darkens the day into night;'
1:1261
「那召喚海水、將其傾倒在地面上的,全能之主上帝是祂的名。」他說,要因上帝的大能而壯膽,並持守這盼望;
'He who calls for the water of the sea and pours it out upon the face of the earth: the Lord God Almighty is His name.' Take courage, he says, in the power of God, and hold fast to this hope;
1:1262
for with ease He both does and refashions whatever He wills, and it is a simple thing for Him to turn even the greatest dangers into good cheer.
1:1263
For by 'the shadow of death' he named the great dangers.
1:1264
And with ease He can bring adversity upon those who dwell in prosperity.
1:1265
And indeed, drawing up the water of the sea into the air by a mere nod, He waters the earth through the clouds.
1:1266
'He who divides destruction over strength, and brings misery upon the stronghold.' With great ease He restores even those who have grown weak to their former strength, and hands over the strong to misery.
1:1267
'They hated him that reproved in the gates, and they abhorred the holy word.' It was the custom among the ancients, as some say, to hold their assemblies and councils about the gates.
1:1268
因此,他們聚集在何處,先知也就在何處提出責備;
There, then, where they gathered together, there also the prophets brought forward their reproofs;
1:1269
but living amid injustices and lawless deeds, they neither gave heed to the reproofs of the truth, nor received the word of the righteous.
1:1270
既然你們也行了這些事,並且在此之外,還持續用手和舌向那些被貧窮所困的人施行暴虐,又以賄賂為樂,熱衷於用不義的方式增加財富,你們就當知道:你們既不能住在自己精心建造、美好裝飾的房屋裡,也不能收取自己勤加栽種之葡萄園的果實;
Since, then, you have done these things as well, and in addition to them have persisted in doing violence with both hand and tongue against those held fast by poverty, and, delighting in bribery, have been eager wickedly to increase your wealth, know that you shall neither dwell in the houses which you have well and beautifully built and adorned, nor shall you harvest the vineyards which you have planted with much care;
1:1271
因為你們不敬虔與不法的過犯,剝奪了你們享用這些的權利;
for the excess of your impiety and lawlessness deprives you of the enjoyment of these things;
1:1272
for you trampled upon justice, taking gifts from the more powerful, while in judgment condemning the poor.
1:1273
'On this account the prudent man in that time shall keep silence, because the time is evil.' For every man of sense, and able to discern what is fitting, seeing the cloud of the evils being brought upon you, astonished and marveling at the infallibility of the prophecy, will be unable to utter anything out of despondency.
1:1274
'Seek then the good, and not the evil, that you may live; and so the Lord God Almighty shall be with you, in the manner you have said.'
1:1275
'We have hated the evil, and have loved the good.'
1:1276
'And establish judgment in the gates, that the Lord God Almighty may have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.' Let deeds follow your words, he says; and though you say that you love the good and abhor wickedness, show forth by deed the truth of your words.
1:1277
For by doing this, you will obtain life from the God of all.
1:1278
但你們若不如此行,哀哭與號咷必充滿寬闊的街道與大路;
But if this is not done by you, lamentations and wailings shall seize both the broad streets and the highways;
1:1279
so that even the farmers, instead of tilling, will give themselves to mourning.
1:1280
And these things shall come to pass when I am present and bring on the punishments.
1:1281
'Woe to those who desire the day of the Lord!'
1:1282
'And to what end is this day of the Lord for you?'
1:1283
Those who desire to see the fulfillment of the prophecy, he says, differ in nothing from a man who has fled from a lion coming upon him, and after it has fallen in with a bear, then in terror has reached his house, and unawares—on account of the tumult gripping his soul—having leaned his hand against the wall, is bitten by a most venomous serpent.
1:1284
因為正如那人在那日看見的是黑暗,而非光明的輝耀;
For just as that man beholds darkness, and not the splendor of light, on that day;
1:1285
so these men shall be delivered over to deep darkness in the day of punishment.
1:1286
'I have hated, I have rejected your feasts, and I will not smell the savor in your solemn assemblies.'
1:1287
'What to Me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord.'
1:1288
'I am full of whole burnt offerings of rams;'
1:1289
'and the fat of lambs, and the blood of bulls and of goats I do not desire.' And in what follows He enumerates all the things offered to Him according to the law, saying that He abhors them all alike.
1:1290
所以在這裡祂也說祂憎惡這些節期;
So here too He said that He hates the feasts;
1:1291
並且祂不悅納那些在嚴肅會中所獻的祭物;
and that He does not accept the sacrifices offered in the solemn assemblies;
1:1292
for the phrase 'I will not smell' He set down in place of 'I will not accept.'
1:1293
So too in the case of Noah the blessed Moses said, 'The Lord God smelled a savor of sweetness'; instead of, He approved the intention of those who had offered.
1:1294
因為上帝並不需要這些;
For God has no need of these things;
1:1295
but neither, He says, will I grant My appearing even to those who offer them for their own salvation.
1:1296
所以,你們要停止歌唱,也要停止使用樂器;
Cease, then, both from singing and from using musical instruments;
1:1297
for neither do I take delight in these things, but from the beginning I ordained them to come about, leading you by means of pleasant things toward these serious pursuits.
1:1298
「公理必如水滾滾,公義必如不可越過的急流。」他說,那對你所宣判的公義裁決,必如急流、如洶湧的洪水一般將刑罰帶到你身上,你也無法尋得逃脫之路;
'Judgment shall roll down like water, and righteousness like an impassable torrent.' The just sentence pronounced against you, he says, will bring the punishment upon you after the manner of a torrent and a violent flood of water, and you will not be able to find a way of escape;
1:1299
and remember how, spending forty years in the wilderness, you did not offer Me worship from sacrifices, but even there displayed the same impiety, having made images of idols of every kind, and to these—and moreover to certain stars—rendering every service.
1:1300
因為摩洛與理番乃是偶像的名字;
For Moloch and Rhephan are names of idols;
1:1301
and of Moloch he made mention also in the opening of the prophecy.
1:1302
當敘利亞人臨近他們時,他們對那奴役感到不滿;祂便預言那更遙遠的一次,意欲藉著這預言使他們驚駭;
When the Syrians drew near to them, they chafed under the servitude; He foretells the more distant one, wishing to strike them with dismay by the prediction;
1:1303
And this the blessed Stephen, interpreting in the Acts, said: 'I will remove you beyond Babylon.'
1:1304
'Woe to those who set at nought Zion, and who trust in the mountain of Samaria!'
1:1305
'They have gathered the first-fruits of the nations, and have entered in for themselves.' Wretched, he says, and thrice wretched are those who despise Zion, yet put their confidence in Samaria, and do not consider that the God who is worshipped in Zion led them into the land of promise, having utterly destroyed those who dwelt in it before, and having granted them a very spacious habitation.
1:1306
But if you suppose that these things are not so, [chapter] 2.
1:1307
'Those who are coming to an evil day'—as having made themselves worthy of punishment.
1:1308
For by 'an evil day' he calls the day of punishment.
1:1309
'Those who draw near and cleave to false sabbaths'—those who in appearance honor the sabbaths, yet in them do countless lawless deeds.
1:1310
然後,在這些之外,祂還責備他們的奢華,說他們躺臥在象牙床上,各樣奢靡之物都擺在他們面前;
Then, in addition to these things, He rebukes their luxury, saying that beds of ivory are spread out beneath them, and that every kind of daintiness is set before them;
1:1311
有從羊群中取來的山羊羔,也有從牛群中取來的牛犢;
kids being brought from the flocks, and calves from the herds;
1:1312
有樂器發出聲響;
instruments producing their sound;
1:1313
有拍手應和著那聲響;
the clapping of hands accompanying the sound;
1:1314
有芬芳的酒,且是最上等醇美的,被端上來;
fragrant wine, and that of choicest bloom, being brought forth;
1:1315
and sweet-smelling perfume completing their dissolute living.
1:1316
Thus living dissolutely, he says, and embracing a life of soft luxury, and supposing these things to be permanent and enduring, and not reckoning up their transitory nature.
1:1317
For this He signified when He said:
1:1318
'They reckoned them as standing fast, and not as fleeting.'
1:1319
They suffered nothing at the affliction of Joseph, but bore it without feeling, while daring so many lawless deeds.
1:1320
因為他用「約瑟」來稱呼他們;
For by 'Joseph' he addressed them;
1:1321
因為以法蓮是約瑟的兒子;
for Ephraim is the son of Joseph;
1:1322
and by 'Ephraim' he names the ten tribes.
1:1323
「因為主指著自己起誓說,這是萬軍之主上帝」;
'For the Lord has sworn by Himself, saying, the Lord God of hosts';
1:1324
for He who has pronounced this sentence against him is unerring and mighty.
1:1325
He gave sentence against him, abhorring his arrogance and impiety.
1:1326
'And it shall come to pass, if ten men be left in one house, they shall die, and the remnant shall be left behind.'
1:1327
'And their kinsfolk shall take them, and shall press hard to carry forth their bones out of the house of the temple; and one shall say to those who preside over the house, Is there yet any with you? And he shall say:'
1:1328
「不要作聲,免得提起主的名。」他說,住在城中之人的毀滅將如此嚴重,以致有些房屋裡的居民全都死了,那些鄰近的、或有親屬關係的人,從別的房屋前來,將死者的屍體交付埋葬;
'Be silent, so as not to name the name of the Lord.' So great, he says, will be the destruction of those who dwell in the city, that some houses will have all their inhabitants dead, and those who are near, or related by kinship, coming from other houses, will hand over the bodies of the deceased for burial;
1:1329
then they will search and question one another, whether perhaps there might be yet another one unburied.
1:1330
當屋內的人回答說沒有時;
And when those within answer that there is none;
1:1331
They come forth, he says, stunned into silence, urging one another to do this, since the God of all has brought forth this verdict.
1:1332
'Shall horses run upon the rocks? Or shall they keep silence among the mares? For you have turned judgment into wrath, and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness.'
1:1333
'You who rejoice in that which is no good word, who say:'
1:1334
'Have we not by our own strength taken to ourselves horns?' Horses, he says, cannot run over the rocks, but the enemies shall advance against you, having despised your former eminence because of the lawlessness you dared to commit.
1:1335
And just as horses neigh at the sight of mares,
1:1336
so the enemies shall eagerly make their assault upon you, because you have stirred up the Judge to wrath against you and have compelled Him to bring forth a verdict at once bitter and just.
1:1337
For you take your cheerfulness not in good things, but boasting and swaggering in your own power you ascribe to yourselves your former might.
1:1338
For this reason I, the Lord of all the host and power, will deliver you over to a mighty nation,
1:1339
「使你們不得進入哈馬,直到西方的溪谷。」意思是說,我必把你們趕出你們從前所耕種的全地;
'so that you shall not enter into Hamath, and as far as the winter torrent of the west.' That is to say, I will drive you out of all the land you formerly tilled;
1:1340
for Jeroboam, in whose reign this prophecy came to pass, restored, it says, the border of Israel from Hamath to the sea toward the west, as the history of the Kingdoms teaches.
1:1341
He says, then, that 'I will deliver all your borders to the enemies.'
1:1342
'Thus the Lord showed me, and behold, a swarm of locusts coming at dawn, and behold, one grasshopper, Gog the king.'
1:1343
'And it came to pass, when it had made an end of devouring the grass of the land,'
1:1344
'who shall raise up Jacob, for he is very small? Relent, O Lord, concerning this.'
1:1345
「主說,這事必不成就。」他說,我看見那可畏的異象,便懇求神施憐憫,止住那毀滅;
'And this shall not be, says the Lord.' Having beheld, he says, that fearful vision, I entreated God to become merciful and to stay the destruction;
1:1346
yet He did not consent, as was fitting, on account of the excess of the lawlessness.
1:1347
祂用「蝗蟲群」指亞述人;
By 'the swarm of locusts' He called the Assyrian;
1:1348
用「蚱蜢」指巴比倫人;
and by 'the grasshopper' the Babylonian;
1:1349
and the phrase 'one Gog the king' signifies the greatness of the army.
1:1350
For just as Gog, he says, the king of the Scythian nations, will gather together against Jerusalem a very great multitude,
1:1351
so the Assyrians and Babylonians shall come with a great army.
1:1352
祂又把他們的果實交給蝗蟲和蚱蜢,同樣也交給螞蚱;
And He gave over their fruits to the locust and the grasshopper, and likewise also to the caterpillar;
1:1353
祂用「火」指仇敵;
and by 'fire' He calls the enemies;
1:1354
用「大淵」指那被他們所奴役的無數列國;
and by 'the great deep' the countless nations that had been enslaved by them;
1:1355
for so also the blessed Moses said:
1:1356
'And the Lord's portion became His people Jacob.'
1:1357
'Thus the Lord showed me, and behold, a man standing upon a wall of adamant, and in his hand adamant.'
1:1358
'What do you see, Amos?' And I said:
1:1359
'Behold, I am setting adamant in the midst of My people Israel.' A strong, he says, and exceedingly firm blow will I bring upon them, like adamant, which is firmer and mightiest of all substances.
1:1360
因為我不再容忍、坐視他們所膽敢行的不敬虔,反倒要連同他們一併除滅偶像的祭壇,止息他們的節期,一言以蔽之,徹底傾覆他們的國度;
For I will no longer endure to overlook the impiety which they dare to commit, but together with them I will destroy also the altars of the idols, and I will bring their feasts to an end, and in a word I will wholly overthrow their kingdom;
1:1361
for by 'the house of Jeroboam' He named the kingdom.
1:1362
For not in his reign, but even after him, and after six other kings, did the prediction receive its fulfillment.
1:1363
When these things were spoken by the prophet, Amaziah the priest of Bethel, fearing lest the people, terrified by the divine threats and moved to repentance, should abandon the worship of the idols, and lest he himself should lose the occasions of his trade, denounced the prophet before the king, stitching together slanders against his truthful words.
1:1364
「……必仆倒,百姓必被擄離開本地。」關於百姓和國度的話原是真的;
'... shall fall, and the people shall be led away captive from their own land.' But the things concerning the people and the kingdom were true;
1:1365
但論到王所說的,顯然是虛謊;
but what was said concerning the king was manifestly false;
1:1366
然而這卻絲毫沒有激動耶羅波安對先知施暴;
yet nevertheless this did not in the least drive Jeroboam into outrage against the prophet;
1:1367
but not even this persuaded Amaziah to keep quiet.
1:1368
But he himself urged the prophet to withdraw, and to live in Judea, and to foretell things to come there, since Bethel was set apart for the kingdom.
1:1369
But Amos, with boldness, both declares his own occupation and reveals the grace given him from God.
1:1370
他說:「我原不是先知,也不是先知的門徒,我不過是牧人,撥弄桑無花果的。」至於「撥弄桑無花果」一語,亞居拉譯作「察看桑樹」;
'For I was neither a prophet,' he says, 'nor a son of a prophet, but I was a herdsman scraping sycamore-figs.' Now the phrase 'scraping sycamore-figs' Aquila rendered 'searching sycamores';
1:1371
提阿多田譯作「刻劃桑樹」;
Theodotion, 'notching sycamores';
1:1372
and Symmachus, 'having sycamores.'
1:1373
And the blessed evangelist Luke also makes mention of it, when he says that the blessed Zacchaeus climbed up into a sycamore tree.
1:1374
And I heard someone who described the things of that region, that their fruit does not ripen unless it first receives some slight incision.
1:1375
This, then, is likely what the Seventy understood, and put 'scraping' in the sense of 'notching' or 'gathering.'
1:1376
'Being occupied, then,' he says, 'with farming and sheep-keeping, the Lord took me from the flocks and commanded me to prophesy.'
1:1377
「所以你要知道,你必看見那如今與你同住的妻子,公然、明目張膽地被仇敵凌辱;
'Know therefore that you shall see the wife who now dwells with you publicly and openly outraged by the enemies;
1:1378
since you too drove the people into the licentiousness of idolatry.
1:1379
你也必看見你所生的兒女盡都被殺;
And you shall see all your offspring being slain;
1:1380
你自己必在異邦之地了結生命,全體百姓也必與你同受一樣的刑罰;
and you yourself shall meet the end of your life in a foreign land, and all the people shall undergo the same punishment as you;
1:1381
and when you have suffered these things, the land shall be delivered to others and parcelled out.'
1:1382
'Thus the Lord showed me, and behold, a fowler's vessel.'
1:1383
'What do you see, Amos?' And I said:
1:1384
'A fowler's vessel.' And the vision signifies the swift capture of Israel.
1:1385
For just as birds are easily caught with birdlime, so the people shall be ensnared by the Assyrians.
1:1386
「結局臨到我民以色列身上了;
'The end has come upon My people Israel;
1:1387
I will no more pass him by.'
1:1388
( γʹ.)
(Ch. 3.) 'And the panels of the temple shall wail.'
1:1389
'In that day, says the Lord, many shall be the fallen; in every place I will cast down silence.' I will no longer be long-suffering, but I will bring the predictions to their end.
1:1390
仇敵的火要進攻我的殿;
The fire of the enemies shall advance against My temple;
1:1391
祂用「殿之鑲板的哀號」來稱呼殿內被殺之人的哀哭,以及焚燒木料的爆裂聲;
and by 'the wailing of the panels of the temple' He called the cry of those slain within, and the crackling of the burning timbers;
1:1392
至於「仆倒的必多;我要在各處降下靜寂」這句,他說,是指被殺的人數眾多;
and the phrase, 'Many shall be the fallen; in every place I will cast down silence,' means: a great multitude, he says, shall there be of those slain;
1:1393
and a great hush and silence shall hold the cities, and the roads, and the villages, by reason of the desolation of their inhabitants.
1:1394
Give heed, then, to these things, you who oppress those who live in poverty and want, and who watch for the new moons and the sabbaths, and who gather together unlawful gains, using unjust weights and balances, and in various ways enslaving the more lowly, and making profit from every kind of trade.
1:1395
'The Lord swears by the pride of Jacob:'
1:1396
'Surely all your works shall be forgotten unto victory.'
1:1397
'And on account of these things shall not the land be troubled, and everyone that dwells in it mourn, and it rise up like the river of Egypt?' By 'pride' He calls the injustice, done with insolence, which they dared against the poor.
1:1398
And he said that the Lord swears, showing the truthfulness of what was spoken.
1:1399
'No longer,' He says, 'will I hand over to any oblivion, as it were, the things you dare to do; but, so to speak, I will stir up the whole earth against you, and I will cover you with the multitude of the enemies, just as the river of Egypt covers the land;'
1:1400
for this is what He hinted at when He said:
1:1401
'It shall come down like the river of Egypt.' Then also the sun at midday shall seem to be turned into darkness for those held fast by these calamities, and 'I will turn their feasts into mourning, and their songs into lamentation.'
1:1402
And all shall assume the garb of mourning, shearing off the comeliness of their hair and putting on sackcloth,
1:1403
so as to resemble the change of those who lament an only-begotten child.
1:1404
And in addition to these things I will bring a famine—a want not of grain and water, but of prophecy and divine teaching.
1:1405
And here and there, leaping and wandering like waters, they shall roam about seeking the divine word, yet failing to obtain the object of their longing.
1:1406
Yes, and the maidens now adorning themselves, and the young men reared alongside them, wasting away with thirst, shall be delivered over to death.
1:1407
'They that swear by the propitiation of Samaria.' And teaching who this is, he immediately added:
1:1408
而別是巴乃是誓約之井,就是他在上文也曾論及的;
and Beersheba is the well of the oath, concerning which he also spoke above;
1:1409
and there too they were worshipping idols.
1:1410
After these things he said that he saw the Lord standing over the altar and commanding him to strike the mercy-seat in such a way that by the blow even the very gateways were shaken.
1:1411
他說:「要砍在眾人的頭上。」這事蒙福的以西結也曾看見;
'And cut them,' he says, 'upon the heads of all.' This the blessed Ezekiel also beheld;
1:1412
for there too the invisible powers, wielding axes, were commanded to run throughout the whole city and to strike down all except those who bore the mark.
1:1413
「他們中間逃跑的絕不能逃脫,他們中間得救的絕不能保全。因為他們若下到陰間,我必用手把他們拉上來,」他說;
'None fleeing from among them shall escape, and none saving himself from among them shall be delivered. For if they go down into Hades, I will drag them up,' he says, 'with my hand;'
1:1414
'if they ascend into heaven—which is among the things impossible—I will bring them down from there and deliver them to their enemies;'
1:1415
'and if they flee even to Carmel, most easily shall I take them thence also;'
1:1416
'and even if they attempt to sink down into the very depth of the sea, I will command the beasts there to devour them;'
1:1417
'and if they attempt even to desert to their enemies, not even so shall they enjoy any sparing from them.'
1:1418
'He that dwells in the heights and looks upon the lowly things.'—'He that summons the water of the sea and pours it out upon the face of the earth: the Lord God the Almighty is his name.' He speaks of the works of his power, that through these he may confirm his threats.
1:1419
'Are you not to me as sons of the Ethiopians, O sons of Israel? says the Lord.' Though having the same nature as the Ethiopians and other men, he says, you were counted worthy of greater providence than all.
1:1420
And demonstrating this, he added:
1:1421
「我豈不是領以色列人出埃及地,領非利士人出迦帕多家,領亞蘭人出坑嗎?」他說,別的民族也曾遷移,離開他們先前的故土而遷到別處;
'Did I not bring up Israel out of the land of Egypt, and the Philistines out of Cappadocia, and the Syrians out of the pit?' For others too, he says, migrated, and leaving their former homeland came to another;
1:1422
in the very manner in which the Syrians and the Philistines did.
1:1423
For no one knows the migration of those peoples, but all men sing of yours.
1:1424
那些民族遷徙之後,與別人同住,按著那些人的律法生活;
And those peoples, having migrated, dwell together with others, living according to the laws of those peoples;
1:1425
you became possessors of a land under your control, since you enjoyed my help.
1:1426
'For behold,' he says, 'the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will remove it from the face of the earth;'
1:1427
「只是我絕不將雅各家全然除滅,這是耶和華說的。」因為他們雖生活在無數的過犯之中,我卻不將他們交於徹底的毀滅;
'except that I will by no means utterly remove the house of Jacob, says the Lord.' For even though they live amid countless transgressions, I will not deliver them over to total destruction;
1:1428
but now indeed I will scatter them into captivity, and just as a farmer separates the chaff from the wheat, I will preserve those worthy of salvation, but deliver the rest to slaughter—those who would not believe my words, but hoped to escape the experience of the things threatened.
1:1429
但他們不肯明白,所羅巴伯只作首領一段短短的時間,就領受了死亡的界限;
But they were unwilling to understand that Zerubbabel, having ruled for a short time, received the boundary of death;
1:1430
whereas the prophecy contains the promise of eternal good things, and the knowledge of God among all the nations—none of which we find corresponding to the things accomplished under Zerubbabel.
1:1431
'And I will establish his seed forever and ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.' And again:
1:1432
「我要建立你的後裔,直到永遠,堅立你的寶座,直到萬代。」萬有的主也藉著蒙福的阿摩司重申這應許;
'For ever will I prepare your seed, and I will build up your throne for generation upon generation.' This promise the Lord of all also renews through the blessed Amos;
1:1433
and he promises to the nations also the gift of the knowledge of God.
1:1434
'For whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.' And to show the trustworthiness of what was said, he added:
1:1435
'Says the Lord who does all these things;' for he who does the deeds foretold the words.
1:1436
But since not all were able to attend to the spiritual promises, he necessarily promises also the supply of bodily good things, and foretells that there will be such abundance of these that the harvest will be overtaken by the vintage—on account of the multitude, as is likely, of the fruits, since the husbandmen will be unable to cut and thresh their sheaves.
1:1437
'But even in the sowing,' he says, 'they shall touch the grape while it is still ripening, and the mountains shall yield fruits of every kind of tree;'
1:1438
'and none of the hills shall be left bare of plants.'
1:1439
百姓從被擄之地得釋放以後,必重建那已成廢墟的城邑,住在其中,無所懼怕地耕種土地,栽種撒種,收取勞碌的果實;
And the people, delivered from captivity, shall rebuild the cities that had been laid waste, and dwelling in them shall till the land without fear, and planting and sowing shall reap the fruits of their labors;
1:1440
and for a very long time they shall inhabit the homeland given to them.
1:1441
For this he intimated when he said:
1:1442
「我要將他們栽於本地,他們必不再從我所賜給他們的地上被拔出來,這是主全能的神說的。」但必須知道,萬有的主雖常應許美善之事;
'And I will plant them in their land, and they shall no more be plucked up out of their land which I have given them, says the Lord God the Almighty.' But one must know that the Lord of all often promises good things;
1:1443
yet those who receive the promises, delighting in transgression, hinder the promises from reaching their fulfillment.
1:1444
And sometimes too he threatens harsh things, and those who by reason of their own transgression have incurred these threats, being changed by the fear of the threats, do not undergo the experience of the grievous things.
1:1445
願我們藉著眾聖先知和使徒的禱告,照著神聖的律法端正自己的生活,並藉著痛悔除去我們罪孽的污穢,得以不經歷任何痛苦之事;
May it be granted to us, through the prayers of the holy prophets and apostles, ordering our own life according to the divine laws, and by repentance casting off the filth of our sins, to undergo the experience of nothing painful;
1:1446
and to attain the good things that have been promised, by the grace of Christ our Savior, with whom to the Father be glory, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
1:1447
以東人以以掃為他們的先祖——他們的名稱也是由他而來(因為他為了一碗紅豆湯而輕看長子的名分,故被稱為以東)——他們不僅承受了這名稱,也承受了先祖的怨恨;
The Idumeans, having Esau as their forefather—from whom they received their appellation (for he was named Edom because he preferred the lentil-dish to the birthright)—became heirs not only of the appellation, but also of the rancor of their ancestor;
1:1448
and just as he held a most persistent wrath against Jacob, so that he even said outright:
1:1449
'Let the days of my father draw near, that I may slay my brother;'
1:1450
so these, continually envying the descendants of Jacob, employed countless plots against them.
1:1451
當以色列人從埃及的奴役中得釋放,願意在偉大的摩西帶領和主理之下進入所應許之地時,以東人不但沒有殷勤接待他們,甚至不容許他們經過自己的境界;
And when, having been released from the Egyptian bondage, they desired to come into the promised land, with the great Moses leading and presiding over them, not only did they not receive them kindly, but they did not even permit them to pass through their own country;
1:1452
and this though the great Moses earnestly entreated this through ambassadors, and promised that they would turn aside neither to the right nor to the left, but would walk by the king's highway, even purchasing the very use of the water.
1:1453
And after these things too they frequently displayed their peculiar hostility, at one time attempting to make war against them alone, at another eagerly allying themselves with those who fought against them.
1:1454
And when the Assyrians and Babylonians made their assaults against them, the Idumeans wrought upon them ever so many dreadful things, not only marshalling themselves alongside the enemies, but also setting ambushes, and hunting down those who attempted to flee, and slaying some of them, while delivering others to their bitterest foes.
1:1455
For this reason the righteous Judge, having filled the admirable Obadiah with the prophetic gift, foretells the evils that were to overtake the Idumeans.
1:1456
'The vision of Obadiah.' Instead of, 'This is the revelation that came from God to Obadiah.'
1:1457
「主神論以東如此說。」他說,我發出這些話語,並非憑著人的思慮;
'Thus says the Lord God to Idumea.' It is not, he says, using human reasoning that I make these words;
1:1458
but the God of all has used my tongue as a kind of instrument, and announces to Idumea the things that are to be.
1:1459
And teaching what sort of things these are, he adds:
1:1460
'I have heard a report from the Lord, and he has sent forth an encompassing to the nations.' Instead of 'encompassing,' Symmachus said 'message.'
1:1461
'Arise, and let us rise up against her for war.' For like some general he assembles the campaign against them, teaching that he himself permits them to suffer these things.
1:1462
'Behold, I have made you very small among the nations;'
1:1463
'you are utterly despised.' And showing the cause,
1:1464
'The pride,' he says, 'of your heart has lifted you up.' Then he teaches the occasions of the pride.
1:1465
'Dwelling in the clefts of the rocks.' Then he also makes his thoughts manifest,
1:1466
saying in his heart:
1:1467
「誰能使我墜落地面呢?」以東四圍有極其高聳的山峰環繞如牆;
'Who shall bring me down to the ground?' Idumea was walled about with exceedingly lofty mountain summits;
1:1468
occupying these during the incursions of their enemies, they often escaped many assaults.
1:1469
Since therefore, he says, trusting in these you boast and think great things of yourself as one impregnable, I will render you easily taken and easily subdued by your enemies, and you shall not escape the hands of your foes—not even if you should be raised aloft like an eagle, and make your flight above the very clouds, and take up your dwelling right among the stars.
1:1470
And signifying with what utter destruction he shall be delivered over, he added:
1:1471
「若有賊進到你那裡,或有夜間的強盜前來,你豈不早已被拋棄了嗎?他們豈不只偷夠自己所需的嗎?若有摘葡萄的進到你那裡,他們豈不留下一些葡萄可拾嗎?以掃怎樣被搜查,他所藏的怎樣被搜出來?」賊只取那放在手邊的東西便離去,不敢搜遍整座房屋;
'If thieves had come in unto thee, or robbers by night, where wouldst thou have been cast away? Would they not have stolen enough for themselves? And if grape-gatherers had come in unto thee, would they not have left a gleaning? How hath Esau been searched out, and his hidden things taken? Thieves, taking what lies ready at hand, depart, fearing to search the whole house;
1:1472
同樣,那些收割葡萄園的人也不肯精細地搜遍所有的葡萄樹;
and likewise those who harvest the vineyards are loath to search all the vines with precision;
1:1473
wherefore, gathering the larger clusters, they leave behind many grapes upon the many branches.
1:1474
But the enemies shall so search thee out, that not even the things hidden away for thee in obscure places shall escape their hands.
