Sequentia de Sancto Michaele, quam Alcuinus composuit Karolo imperatori Summi regis archangele Michahel, intende, quaesumus, nostris vocibus. Te namque profitemur esse supernorum principem civium. Te deum generi humano orante diriguntur angeli, Ne laedere inimici, quantum cupiunt, versuti fessos unquam mortales praevaleant. Idem tenes perpetui potentiam paradisi, semper te sancti honorant angeli, In templo tu dei turibulum aureum visus es habuisse manibus. Inde scandens vapor aromate plurimo pervenit ante conspectum dei. Tu crudelem cum draconem forti manu straveras, faucibus illius animas eruisti plurimas.

A sequence concerning Saint Michael, which Alcuin composed for the emperor Charles. O Michael, archangel of the Most High King, give heed, we beseech you, to our voices. For we confess you to be the prince of the citizens above. At your prayer to God on behalf of the human race the angels are sent forth, lest the cunning enemies, as much as they desire, should ever prevail to harm weary mortals. You hold likewise the power of eternal paradise; the holy angels ever honour you. In the temple of God you were seen to hold a golden censer in your hands. From it, ascending, smoke with abundant fragrance came before the sight of God. You with strong hand had laid low the cruel dragon, and from his jaws you snatched many souls.

Hinc maximum agebatur in caelo silentium, millia millium et dicunt 'salus regi domino'. Audi nos, Michalel, angele summe, huc parum descende de poli sede, nobis ferendo opem domini levamen atque indulgentiae. Tu nostros, Gabrihel, hostes prosterne, tu, Raphael, aegris affer medelam, morbos absterge, noxas minue nosque fac interesse gaudiis beatorum. Has tibi symphonias plectrat sophus, induperator.

Hear us, Michael, highest angel; descend hither a little from your seat in the sky, bringing us the help of the Lord, relief and the gift of pardon. You, Gabriel, lay low our foes; you, Raphael, bring healing to the sick, wipe away diseases, lessen our harms, and make us share in the joys of the blessed. These harmonies the wise man plays for you, O emperor.
