In the year 731, King Ceolwulf was captured, tonsured, and sent back into the kingdom; Bishop Acca was put to flight from his see. In the year 732, Ecgberht was made bishop of York in place of Wilfrid. [Cynebert, bishop of the people of Lindsey, died.] [In the year 733 from the Lord's incarnation, Archbishop Tatwine, having received the pallium from apostolic authority, ordained Alwig and Sigfrid as bishops.] In the year 733, an eclipse of the sun took place on the nineteenth day before the Kalends of September, about the third hour of the day, so that almost the whole orb of the sun seemed to be covered as with a most black and dreadful shield. In the year 734, the moon was suffused with a bloody redness for about a full hour, on the second day before the Kalends of February, about cockcrow, and then, blackness following, returned to its own light.

[In the year 734 from the incarnation of Christ, Bishop Tatwine died. In the year 735, Nothelm was ordained archbishop; and Bishop Ecgberht, having received the pallium from the apostolic see, was the first after Paulinus confirmed in the archiepiscopate; and he ordained Frithuberht and Frithuwald as bishops, and Bede the presbyter died. In the year 737, an excessive drought made the land unfruitful; and Ceolwulf, tonsured of his own will, left the kingdom to Eadberht. In the year 739, Æthelheard king of the West Saxons died; and Archbishop Nothelm. In the year 740, Cuthbert was consecrated in place of Nothelm. Æthelbald king of the Mercians, by an impious fraud, ravaged part of Northumbria;

and their king Eadberht was occupied with his army against the Picts. Bishop Æthelwald also died, and in his place Cynewulf was ordained bishop. Earnwine and Eadberht were killed. In the year 741, a great drought seized the land. Charles, king of the Franks, died; and in his place his sons Carloman and Pippin received the kingdom. In the year 745, Bishop Wilfrid and Ingwald bishop of London passed to the Lord. In the year 747, Herefrith the man of God died. In the year 750, Cuthred king of the West Saxons rose up against King Æthelbald and Oengus. Theudor and Eanred died. Eadberht added the plain of Kyle, with other regions, to his kingdom. In the year 753.

In the fifth year of the reign of Eadberht, on the fifth day before the Ides of January, an eclipse of the sun took place. Afterward in the same year and month, that is, on the ninth day before the Kalends of February, the moon underwent an eclipse, covered with a dreadful and most black shield, as the sun had been a little before. In the year 754, Boniface, who is also called Winfrid, bishop of the Franks, was crowned with martyrdom together with fifty-three others; and in his place Redger was consecrated archbishop by Pope Stephen. In the year 757, Æthelbald king of the Mercians was wretchedly slain by night, by a treacherous death, by his own guardians; Beornred began to reign; Cynewulf king of the West Saxons died. In the same year also Offa, having put Beornred to flight, sought the kingdom of the Mercians with a bloody sword.

In the year 758, Eadberht king of the Northumbrians, for the sake of the love of God and of the heavenly fatherland by force, having received the tonsure of Saint Peter, left the kingdom to his son Oswulf. In the year 758, Oswulf was killed by a crime of his own ministers; and in the same year Æthelwald, chosen by his own people, entered into the kingdom; in the second year of whose reign a great tribulation of mortality came and remained for nearly two years, the people being laid waste by harsh and various diseases, but most of all by the wasting of dysentery. In the year 761, Oengus king of the Picts died, who from the beginning of his reign to the end had carried on as a tyrant and executioner with bloody crime; and Oswine was killed. In the year 765, Alhred was received into the kingdom.

In the year 766, Archbishop Ecgberht, enriched with royal lineage and imbued with divine knowledge, and Frithuberht, truly faithful bishops, passed to the Lord.]
