1:1
PRAEFATIO. Scio quosdam inlustrium uirorum pro suarum splendore uirtutum ad perpetuandam suae gloriae dignitatem ephemeridem gestorum suorum proprio sermone conscriptam memoriae tradidisse.
PREFACE. I know that certain men of renown, on account of the splendor of their virtues, have handed down to memory a daily record of their own deeds, composed in their own words, in order to perpetuate the dignity of their glory.
1:2
a quorum me praestantissimis meritis tam longe profecto quam ipsa temporis antiquitate discretum non utique ratio aequa consilii ad contexendum eiusdem prope materiae opusculum prouocauit, cum mihi neque ulla sint gesta tam splendida, de quibus aliquam possim captare gloriolam, nec eloquii tanta fiducia, ut facile audeam cuiusquam opera scriptoris aemulari, [2] sed, quod non piget confiteri, iam dudum me in peregrinatione diuturna aerumnosi otii maerore marcescentem misericordia, ut confido, diuina ad huiusmodi me solacia affectanda pellexit, quae simul et bene sibi consciae senectuti et religioso proposito conuenirent, ut, qui me scilicet totam uitam meam deo debere meminissem, totius
Although I am set far apart from their most excellent merits—as far, indeed, as I am separated by the very antiquity of time—it was assuredly no fair judgment of counsel that prompted me to weave together a little work of nearly the same kind; for I have no deeds so splendid from which I might catch some small portion of glory, nor such confidence in eloquence that I should easily dare to rival the work of any writer. But—what I am not ashamed to confess—long ago, as I was wasting away in long exile through the grief of a wretched leisure, the divine mercy, as I trust, enticed me to seek such consolations as would befit both an old age conscious of itself and a religious purpose: namely, that I, remembering that I owe my whole life to God,
1:3
quoque uitae meae actus ipsius deuotos obsequiis exhiberem eiusdemque gratia concessa mihi tempora recensendo eucharisticon ipsi opusculum sub ephemeridis meae relatione contexerem, [3] sciens profecto et benignae ipsius misericordiae circa me fuisse, quod indultis humano generi temporariis uoluptatibus etiam ipse prima mea aetate non carui, et in hac quoque parte curam mihi prouidentiae ipsius profuisse, quod me adsiduis aduersitatibus moderanter exercens euidenter instruxit, nec inpensius me praesentem beatitudinem debere diligere, quam amittere posse me scirem, nec aduersis magnopere terreri, in quibus subuenire mihi posse misericordias ipsius adprobassem.
should likewise present all the acts of my life as devoted to his service, and, by reviewing the seasons granted me through his grace, should compose for him this little eucharistic work in the form of my daily record. For I know assuredly that it belonged also to his kindly mercy toward me, that I too in my early youth did not lack those temporal pleasures granted to the human race; and that in this part also the care of his providence profited me, in that, by training me with moderation through constant adversities, it clearly instructed me neither to love present happiness too eagerly, since I knew I could lose it, nor to be greatly terrified by adversities, in which I had proved that his mercies could come to my aid.
1:4
Therefore, if ever this little work of mine should come into anyone's hands, he ought clearly to perceive, from the very title prefixed to the booklet, that I have devoted this little meditation of mine, which I dedicate to almighty God, rather to my own leisure than to another's business; and that it is more among my desires that this poor offering of mine, such as it is, should be accepted by God, than that an unpolished poem should come to the notice of the more learned.
1:5
[5] attamen si cui forsitan magis curioso tantum otii ab re sua fuerit, ut laboriosum uitae meae ordinem uelit agnoscere, exoratum eum cupio, ut, siue aliquid seu forsitan nihil in gestis uel in uersibus meis, quod possit probare, reppererit, ea tamen ipsa, quae elegerit, obliuioni potius inculcanda deleget, quam memoriae diiudicanda commendet. EVXAPICTIKOC DEO SUB EPHEMERIDIS MEAE TEXTU.
Yet if perhaps someone more curious should have so much leisure to spare from his own affairs that he wishes to learn the toilsome course of my life, I desire to entreat him that, whether he finds something or perhaps nothing in my deeds or in my verses that he can approve, those very things which he chooses he would rather consign to oblivion than commit to memory for judgment. A THANKSGIVING TO GOD, IN THE FORM OF MY DAILY RECORD.
1:6
Enarrare parans annorum lapsa meorum tempora et in seriem deducere gesta dierum, ambigua exactos uitae quos sorte cucurri, te, deus omnipotens, placidus mihi, deprecor, adsis adspiransque operi placita tibi coepta secundes, effectum scriptis tribuens uotisque profectum, ut tua te merear percurrere dona iuuante. omnia namque meae tibi debeo tempora uitae, auram ex quo primum uitalis luminis hausi, inter et aduersas iactatus saepe procellas instabilis mundi te protectore senescens altera ab. undecima annorum currente meorum hebdomade sex aestiui flagrantia solis solstitia et totidem brumae iam frigora uidi te donante, deus, lapsi qui temporis annos instaurando nouas cursu reuolubilis aeui.
Preparing to recount the years of my life that have slipped away, and to set in order the deeds of my days—those days which I have run through amid the uncertain lot of life—I beseech you, almighty God, be gracious and present to me; and breathing upon my work, prosper the undertakings that are pleasing to you, granting fulfillment to my writings and success to my vows, that by your help I may deserve to run through your gifts. For I owe to you all the seasons of my life, from the time when I first drew the breath of the vital light; and tossed often amid the contrary storms of this unstable world, growing old under your protection, with the eleventh week of my years now running into the twelfth, I have, by your gift, O God, seen six blazing solstices of the summer sun and as many cold seasons of winter—you who, restoring the years of fallen time, renew them in the course of the revolving age.
1:7
sit mihi fas igitur uersu tua dona canentem pangere et expressas uerbis quoque pendere grates, quas equidem et clausas scimus tibi corde patere, ultro sed abrumpens tacitae penetralia mentis fontem exundantis uoti uox conscia prodit.
Be it lawful for me, then, singing your gifts in verse, to compose and also to render thanks expressed in words—thanks which indeed we know lie open to you even when shut up within the heart; yet, of its own accord bursting through the inmost recesses of the silent mind, the conscious voice brings forth the fountain of an overflowing vow.
1:8
tu mihi lactanti uires in corpore inerti ad toleranda uiae pelagique incerta dedisti, editus ut Pellis inter cunabula quondam regis Alexandri prope moenia Thessalonices patre gerente uices inlustris praefecturae, orbis ad alterius discretas aequore terras perueherer, trepidis nutricum creditus ulnis, ninguida perque iuga et sectas torrentibus Alpes Oceanumque fretum Tyrrheni et gurgitis undas moenia Sidoniae Carthaginis usque uenirem, ante suum nono quam menstrua luna recursu luce nouata orbem nostro compleret ab ortu. illic, ut didici, ter senis mensibus actis sub genitore meo proconsule rursus ad aequor expertasque uias reuocor, uisurus et orbis inclita culminibus praeclarae moenia Romae;
You gave me, while still suckling and feeble in body, the strength to endure the uncertainties of road and sea, so that, born once at Pella amid the cradles near the walls of King Alexander's city of Thessalonica, while my father held the office of the illustrious prefecture, I might be carried to the lands of another part of the world divided by the sea, entrusted to the trembling arms of my nurses; and so that, over the snowy ridges and the Alps cleft by torrents, over the strait of the Tyrrhenian Ocean and the waves of its deep, I might come even to the walls of Sidonian Carthage, before the monthly moon in its ninth return should, with renewed light, complete its orbit from our setting-out. There, as I learned, when thrice six months had passed, under my father now proconsul, I was again summoned back to the sea and the well-tried roads, to behold the renowned walls of Rome, glorious in its lofty summits.
1:9
quae tamen haut etiam sensu agnoscenda tuentis subiacuere mihi, sed post conperta relatu adsiduo illorum, quibus haec tum nota fuere, propositum seruans operis subdenda putaui. tandem autem exacto longarum fine uiarum. maiorum in patriam tectisque aduectus auitis Burdigalam ueni, cuius speciosa Garumna moenibus Oceani refluas maris inuehit undas nauigeram per portam, quae portum spatiosum nunc etiam muris spatiosa includit in urbe. tunc et auus primum illic fit mihi cognitus, anni eiusdem consul, nostra trieteride prima.
These things, however, did not yet lie subject to me to be perceived by the awareness of one who beholds; but having afterwards learned them through the constant report of those to whom they were then known, keeping to the plan of my work, I thought they should be set down. At length, however, when the end of my long journeys was accomplished, brought into the homeland of my forefathers and to my ancestral dwellings, I came to Bordeaux, whose lovely Garumna (Garonne) carries the back-flowing waves of the Ocean's sea up to its walls through a ship-bearing gate, which even now, spacious itself, encloses a spacious harbor within the city's walls. Then too my grandfather first became known to me there, consul in that same year, in my first three-year span of life.
1:10
After this span was completed for me, and growing vigor strengthened my feeble limbs, and the mind, conscious of its senses and grown accustomed to use, learned to recognize the use of things—whatever I have since been able to remember, it is necessary that I myself, with my own trustworthy testimony, should unfold concerning things to be acknowledged about myself.
1:11
sed quid ego ex nostris aliud puerilibus annis, quos mihi libertas ludusque et laetior aetas conciliare suis meritis potuisse uidentur, uel magis ipse libens recolam, uel dignius ausim inserere huic nostro, quem uersu cudo, libello quam pietatis opus studiumque insigne parentum permixtis semper docta exercere peritum blanditiis gnaramque apto moderamine curam insinuare mihi morum instrumenta bonorum ingenioque rudi celerem conferre profectum, ipsius alphabeti inter prope prima elementa nosse cauere decem specialia signa amathiae nec minus et uitia uitare a/.otvovorJTa.
But what else of my boyhood years—those years which liberty and play and a more cheerful age seem by their merits to have been able to win for me—should I more gladly recall, or more worthily dare to insert into this our little book, which I am forging in verse, than the work of piety and the distinguished zeal of my parents: ever learned, through pleasant means mingled together, to exercise their skilled care, and through fitting moderation to instil in me knowledge of good morals, and to bring swift progress to my untrained talent; so that amid almost the first elements of the alphabet itself I learned to beware of the ten special marks of ignorance, and no less to shun the vices that are shameful.
1:12
quarum iam dudum nullus uigeat licet usus disciplinarum, uitiato scilicet aeuo, me Romana tamen, fateor, seruata uetustas plus iuuat atque seni propria est acceptior aetas. nec sero exacto primi mox tempore lustri dogmata Socratus et bellica plasmata Homeri erroresque legens cognoscere cogor Ulixis; protinus ad libros etiam transire Maronis uix bene conperto iubeor sermone Latino, conloquio Graiorum adsuefactus famulorum, quos mihi iam longus ludorum iunxerat usus, unde labor puero, fateor, fuit hic mihi maior, eloquium librorum ignotae apprehendere linguae.
Although for a long time now no use of those disciplines flourishes—the age being indeed corrupted—yet the Roman antiquity preserved (I confess) pleases me more, and that bygone age is dearer and more acceptable to an old man as his own. Nor late, when the time of my first lustrum had just been completed, was I compelled, by reading, to learn the teachings of Socrates and the warlike fictions of Homer and the wanderings of Ulysses; straightway I am bidden to pass over also to the books of Maro (Virgil), the Latin tongue scarcely yet well mastered, since I had been accustomed to the conversation of Greek servants whom now the long use of my games had joined to me. Hence, I confess, the greater toil for me as a boy was this: to grasp the eloquence of books in an unfamiliar tongue.
1:13
quae doctrina duplex sicut est potioribus apta ingeniis geminoque ornat splendore peritos, sic sterilis nimium nostri, ut modo sentio, cordis exilem facile exhausit diuisio uenam. quod nunc inuito quoque me haec mea pagina prodit, inconsulta quidem, quam sponte expono legendam, sed mihi non rebus, quantum confido, pudenda, quarum notitiam scriptis contexere conor: namque ita me sollers castorum cura parentum a puero instituit, laedi ne quando sinistro cuiusquam sermone mea se fama timeret.
This twofold learning, just as it is suited to the better talents and adorns the skilled with a double splendor, so, from a heart too barren—as I now perceive—of mine, the dividing of it easily drained my slender vein. This now my page reveals, even against my will—rashly indeed, since I expose it of my own accord to be read; yet (so far as I am confident) it is not a thing to bring me shame as regards the matters whose knowledge I am trying to weave together in writing: for the skilful care of my chaste parents so trained me from boyhood that my good name should never fear to be harmed by anyone's malicious speech.
1:14
quae licet obtineat proprium bene parta decorem, hoc potiore tamen tum me decorasset honore, consona si nostris primo sub tempore uotis hac in parte etiam mansissent uota parentum, perpetuo ut puerum seruarent me tibi, Christe, rectius hanc curam pro me pietatis habentes, carnis ut inlecebris breuiter praesentibus expers aeternos caperem uenturo in tempore fructus. sed quoniam nunc iam magis hoc me credere fas est conduxisse mihi, quod te uoluisse probasti, omnipotens aeterne deus, qui cuncta gubernas, culpato renouando mihi uitalia dona, hoc nunc maiores pro me tibi debeo grates, maiorum quanto errorum cognosco reatum.
Although this learning, well acquired, possesses its own proper grace, yet it would have adorned me with a more excellent honor, if in this matter too, at that first time, my parents' vows had remained in harmony with our own; that they might keep me ever a child for you, O Christ, having more rightly this care of piety on my behalf, that, free from the briefly present allurements of the flesh, I might receive eternal fruits in the time to come. But since it is now right rather to believe that what you proved you willed has been to my advantage—almighty, eternal God, who govern all things—by renewing for me, guilty as I am, the gifts of life, for this I now owe you greater thanks on my behalf, in proportion as I recognize the guilt of my greater errors.
1:15
namque et incautus quidquid culpabile gessi inlicitumque uagus per lubrica tempora uitae, te indulgente mihi totum scio posse remitti, ex quo me reprobans lapsum ad tua iura refugi, et si ulla umquam potui peccata cauere, quae mihi maiorem parerent commissa reatum, hoc quoque me indeptum diuino munere noui.
For indeed, whatever blameworthy thing I have done unwarily, and whatever unlawful thing I committed as I wandered through the slippery seasons of life, I know that it can all be remitted to me by your indulgence, ever since, condemning myself as fallen, I fled back to your laws; and if ever I was able to avoid any sins which, once committed, would have brought me greater guilt, this too I know I have obtained by your divine gift.
1:16
Sed redeo ad seriem decursaque illius aeui tempora, quo studiis intentus litteraturae ultro libens aliquem iam me mihi ipse uidebar uotiuum inpensi, operis sentire profectum, Argolico pariter Latioque instante magistro, cepissemque etiam forsan fructum quoque dignum, ni subito incumbens quartana acerba meorum conatus placitos studiorum destituisset uix impleta aeui quinta trieteride nostri. consternata autem pro me pietate parentum, quippe quibus potior uisa est curatio nostri corporis inualidi quam doctae instructio linguae, primitus hoc medicis suadentibus, ut mihi iugis laetitia atque animo grata omnia prospicerentur;
但我回到那已逝歲月的次序與光景,那時我專注於文學的學業,自由而甘心,便已自覺在我所立志、所投入的工作上略有長進,希臘文與拉丁文的教師同樣催促著我;倘若不是一場突如其來、苦楚的四日熱病臨到我,使我學業中那令人愉悅的努力中斷,我或許也本能收得相稱的果子——那時我年歲的第五個三年期才剛勉強滿了。於是,我父母的虔愛為我大為驚惶——因在他們看來,醫治我軟弱的身體,比教導學問的口才更為要緊——起初便照醫生的建議,要為我預備持續的歡樂和一切叫心思喜悅之事;
But I return to the sequence and to the times of that age that have passed by, in which, intent upon the studies of literature, freely and of my own accord I already seemed to myself to perceive some progress in the work I had vowed and bestowed, with the Argive (Greek) and Latin master alike pressing me on; and I should perhaps even have reaped a worthy fruit too, had not a sudden bitter quartan fever, falling upon me, deserted the pleasing endeavors of my studies—the fifth three-year span of my age scarcely completed. Then, my parents' devotion being dismayed on my behalf—since to them the cure of my feeble body seemed more important than the instruction of a learned tongue—at first, on the physicians' advice, that constant cheerfulness and all things pleasing to the mind should be provided for me;
1:17
quae pater in tantum studuit per se ipse parare, deposito ut nuper uenandi attentius usucausa equidem sola studiorum quippe meorum, neue his officeret, sibi me ad sua ludicra iungens, neu sine me placitis umquam solus fruereturme propter rursus cura maiore resumens eiusdem ludi cuncta instrumenta nouaret, ex quibus optatam possem captare salutem. quae protracta diu longi per tempora morbi inuexere mihi iugem iam deinde legendi desidiam, officeret durans quae postea sano succedente nouo mundi fallacis amore et tenero nimium affectu cedente parentum, sufficeret quibus ex nostra gaudere salute.
things which my father strove so greatly to provide by his own efforts, having recently laid aside his more eager pursuit of hunting—indeed solely for the sake of my studies, lest it should be an obstacle to them, joining me to himself for his amusements, that he might never enjoy his pleasures alone without me—again, for my sake, taking it up with greater care, that he might renew all the equipment of that same sport, by which I might obtain the longed-for health. These things, drawn out long through the seasons of a lengthy illness, brought upon me thenceforth a constant sloth in reading, which, lasting on, would later prove an obstacle even when health was restored, as a new love of the deceitful world succeeded, and the tender affection of my parents yielded too much—my parents, for whom it was enough to rejoice in our health.
1:18
qua ratione auctus noster quoque creuit et error, firmatus facile ad iuuenalia uota sequenda, ut mihi pulcher equus falerisque ornatior esset, strator procerus, uelox canis et speciosus accipiter, Romana et nuper ab urbe petita aurata instrueret nostrum sphera concita ludum, cultior utque mihi uestis foret et noua saepe quaeque Arabi muris leni fragraret odore. nec minus et uegetus ueloci currere uectus semper equo gaudens quotiens euasero casus abruptos, recolensChristi me munere fas est credere seruatum, quod tum nescisse dolendum est, scilicet inlecebris urgentibus undique mundi.
By this reckoning our own waywardness too grew as we increased, readily confirmed in pursuing youthful longings: that I might have a handsome horse, made finer by its trappings; a tall groom, a swift hound, a splendid hawk; that the gilded ball, freshly fetched from the city of Rome, might furnish our games as it was hurled about; that my clothing might be more elegant, and each new garment often breathe the gentle fragrance of Arabian myrrh. No less, lively and borne at a gallop, I always delighted to run on a swift horse, and each time I escaped sudden mishaps, recalling them — it is right for me to believe I was preserved by the gift of Christ, though it is to be lamented that I did not then know it, while the world's enticements pressed upon me from every side.
1:19
quas inter fluitans interque et uota parentum, iugiter in nostram tendentia posteritatem, iam prope sero calens aeui pro tempore nostri in noua prorupi iuuenalis gaudia luxus, quae facile ante puer rebar me posse cauere. attamen in quantum lasciua licentia cauto stricta coherceri potuit moderamine freni, congererem grauiora meis ne crimina culpis, hac mea castigans lege incentiua repressi, inuitam ne quando ullam iurisue alieni adpeterem carumque memor seruare pudorem cedere et ingenuis oblatis sponte cauerem, contentus domus inlecebris famulantibus uti, quippe reus culpae potius quam criminis esse praeponens famaeque timens incurrere damna.
Drifting amid these things, and amid the prayers of my parents, which ever stretched toward our future welfare, now already growing warm rather late for the season of my life, I burst into the new joys of youthful extravagance, which earlier as a boy I had thought I could easily guard against. Yet insofar as wanton license could be checked and bound by a cautious restraint of the rein, lest I should heap heavier crimes upon my faults, by this rule I chastised myself and repressed my incitements: that I should never desire any unwilling woman or one under another's right, and, mindful to preserve my dear sense of honor, that I should refrain even from yielding to those of free birth offered to me of their own accord, content to use the alluring handmaids of my own household — preferring indeed to be guilty of a fault rather than of a crime, and fearing to incur damage to my good name.
1:20
But neither will I keep silent about this among my deeds: that I knew of one child born of me at that time, whom however I never saw, since he died quickly; nor was there ever any other afterward who might be my bastard, although a liberty joined with the enticements of wanton youth could have harmed me more grievously by its mastery, had not your care for me, O Christ, been with me even then as well.
1:21
Talis uita mihi a ter senis circiter annis -usque duo durans impleta decennia mansit, donec me inuitum, fateor, pia cura parentum cogeret inuectum blanda suetudine ritum deserere atque nouum conpelleret esse maritum coniugis, antiquo potius cuius domus esset nomine magnifica, quam quae possessa placere ad praesens posset nimiis obnoxia curis, dudum desidia domini neclecta senili, parua cui neptis functo genitore superstes successit, taedisque meis quae postea cessit.
Such a life remained for me, lasting from about my eighteenth year, fulfilled until I had completed two decades, until — I confess — the loving care of my parents compelled me, unwilling, to abandon a way of life I had been drawn into by its alluring habit, and forced me to become a new husband; the household of my bride being magnificent rather in its ancient name than such as might please for the present once possessed, being subject to excessive cares, long neglected through the idleness of an aged master, to whom a small granddaughter had succeeded, surviving her dead father — she who afterward yielded to my marriage torches.
1:22
sed semel inpositum statuens tolerare laborem suffragante animi studiis feruore iuuentae, uix paucis domus indeptae exercere diebus gaudia contentus, malesuada otia curis mutare insolitis cito meque meosque coegi, quos potui, exemplo proprii inuitando laboris, quosdam autem inuitos domini adstringendo rigore. atque ita suscepti status actibus inpiger instans protinus et culturam agris adhibere refectis et fessis celerem properaui inpendere curam uinetis conperta mihi ratione nouandis et, quod praecipue plerisque uidetur amarum, ultro libens primus fiscalia debita certo tempore persoluens propere mihi fida paraui otia, priuatae post inpendenda quieti.
But resolving to bear once and for all the task imposed on me, with the studies of my mind aided by the ardor of youth, content for scarce a few days to enjoy the pleasures of the household I had acquired, I quickly compelled both myself and my people to exchange seductive idleness for unaccustomed cares — those whom I could, by inviting them with the example of my own labor, but some unwilling ones by binding them with a master's strictness. And thus, untiring in the duties of the estate I had undertaken, I straightway hastened both to apply cultivation to the recovered fields and to spend swift care upon the worn-out vineyards, having learned the method of renewing them; and — what seems especially bitter to most — paying my fiscal debts of my own accord, gladly and first, at the appointed time, I quickly secured for myself a trustworthy leisure, to be devoted afterward to private rest.
1:23
This too was always exceedingly dear to me, and well suited to my disposition, since I desired things modest above all, near to comforts and removed from ambition: that I might have an elegant house with spacious dwellings.
1:24
And suited continually throughout the various seasons of the year; a rich, gleaming table; many youthful servants; pleasing and abundant furnishings for diverse uses; silverware excelling more in craftsmanship than in weight; skilled artisans of various crafts to fulfill commands swiftly; stables full of well-fed beasts of burden; and then safe conveyance in handsome carriages — yet not more attentive to enlarging these things than zealous to preserve them, neither too eager to increase my wealth nor ambitious for honors, but rather, I confess, a pursuer of pleasures, provided however that they could be obtained at the least cost and expense and stand with the honor of my reputation unimpaired, lest the mark of luxury should stain an honorable pursuit.
1:25
quae mihi cuncta tamen grata acceptaque fruenti cara magis pietas superabat magna parentum, obstringens sibi me nexu dominantis amoris, maiore ut parte anni ipsis praesentia nostra seruiret, paribus perdurans consona uotis communemque parans per mutua gaudia fructum. Cuius uitae utinam nobis prolixior usus concessus largo mansisset munere Christi, persistente simul priscae quoque tempore pacis! multimodis quisset nostrae prodesse iuuentae consulti patris adsidua conlatio uerbi exemplisque bonis studiorum instructio crescens.
Yet though all these things were pleasing and welcome to me as I enjoyed them, the great love of my parents surpassed them, dearer to me, binding me to themselves with the bond of a mastering affection, so that for the greater part of the year our presence might serve them, enduring in harmony with shared prayers and preparing a common fruit through mutual joys. Oh that a more prolonged enjoyment of that life had been granted us to remain by Christ's generous gift, while at the same time the season of the former peace had likewise persisted! In manifold ways the constant conferring of a wise father's counsel could have profited our youth, and the growing instruction in pursuits by good examples.
1:26
sed transacta aeui post trina decennia nostri successit duplicis non felix cura laboris, publica quippe simul clade in commune dolenda hostibus infusis Romani in uiscera regni priuata cum sorte patris de funere functi: ultima namque eius finitae tempora uitae temporibus ruptae pacis prope iuncta fuere.- at mihi damna domus populantem inlata per hostem, per se magna licet, multo leuiora fuere defuncti patris inmodico conlata dolori, per quem cara mihi et patria et domus ipsa fiebat: tamque etenim fido tradentes mutua nobis officia affectu conserto uiximus aeuo, uinceret aequaeuos nostra ut concordia amicos.
But after the three decades of my life had passed, there followed the unhappy burden of a twofold sorrow: for at one and the same time a public calamity, to be lamented in common — the enemy poured into the vitals of the Roman realm — together with a private lot in the death of my father who had passed away: for the last days of his finished life were nearly joined to the times of the broken peace. Yet for me the losses inflicted on my house by the ravaging foe, though great in themselves, were far lighter when set against the immoderate grief for my dead father, through whom both my fatherland and my very house had become dear to me: for indeed, rendering mutual offices to each other with so faithful an affection, we had lived our lives in joined harmony, so that our concord surpassed friends of like age.
1:27
hoc igitur mihi subtracto inter prima iuuentae tempora tam caro socio et monitore fideli ilico me indocilis fratris discordia acerba excepit, ualidum genitoris testamentum soluere conantis specialia commoda matris inpugnandi animo, cuius mihi cura tuendae hoc quoque maior erat, quo iustior, et pietatis non minor affectus studium firmabat honestum. insuper aduersis me pluribus exagitandum laeua facultatum prorumpens fama mearum exposuit blandas inter uanae ambitionis inlecebras grauibus coniuncta et damna periclis.
Therefore, when this so dear companion and faithful counselor was taken from me in the first season of my youth, at once my untaught brother's bitter discord seized me, as he attempted to undo our father's valid testament with intent to attack my mother's particular interests — whose protection was the greater a care to me as it was the more just, and an affection of filial duty no less strengthened my honorable zeal. Moreover, the ill-omened report of my resources, bursting forth, exposed me to be harassed by many adversities, set amid the alluring enticements of empty ambition, joined with grievous losses and perils.
1:28
quae meminisse licet pigeat transactaque dudum obliuione sua malim sopita silere, inuitant aduersa tamen per nostra tuorum cognita donorum solacia, Christe, bonorum emensis indepta malis tua munera fando prodere et in lucem proferre recondita corde. namque et quanta mihi per te conlata potentum gratia praestiterit, facile experiendo probaui, saepe prius claro procerum conlatus honori ignorans, proprio quam praeditus ipse potirer, quantum et econtra ui inpugnante maligna ipsa patronorum mihi ambitiosa meorum obfuerint studia et nostri euidenter honores.
Though it may grieve me to remember these things, and I would rather that they lay hushed, lulled by their own long-since oblivion, yet my adversities invite me, through them, to disclose in the telling, O Christ, the comforts of your good gifts made known to me, and to bring into the light what is hidden in the heart, having obtained your gifts when those evils were measured out. For indeed I have proved by easy experience how great a favor of the powerful, conferred on me through you, has availed me, often before being matched to the illustrious honor of the great while unaware of it, before I myself, endowed with it, possessed it; and how greatly, on the contrary, with malign force assailing me, the very ambitious endeavors of my own patrons and our honors evidently stood in my way.
1:29
ac mihi ante omnes specialiter, altera cuius pars orientis erat patria, in qua scilicet ortus possessorque etiam non ultimus esse uidebar, iniecere manum mala, sed mihi debita dudum, quod me et inuitum protracto errore. tenerent agminis ipsa mei primum molitio pigra, dissona et interdum carorum uota meorum, saepius et propriis certans mens obuia uotis, ambigui euentus quotiens formido recurrens tardabat coeptos sorte obsistente paratus, allicerent et contra animum suetudo quietis, otia nota, domus specialia commoda plura, omnibus heu! nimium blandis magnisque refertae deliciis cunctisque bonis in tempore duro, hospite tunc etiam Gothico quae sola careret;
禍患臨到我,尤其先於眾人——我祖國的另一部分在東方,我在那裡確實算是個本地人,且是身分絕非末等的擁有者——這些禍患雖久已欠我,卻向我下手,因它們連我不情願時也轄制著我,使這漂泊延長。先是我隨從遲緩的啟程,又有我親愛之人時而不合的禱告,還有更常與自身慾望相爭的心志,每當對不確定結局反覆的恐懼拖延了已開始的籌備,命運又從中作梗;又恰恰相反,安靜的習慣、熟悉的閒適,以及家中諸多特有的舒適引誘著我的心——這一切,唉!在艱難時局裡都滿溢著過多迷人而豐盛的歡愉與一切美物,這家業當時唯獨還沒有哥德人的客人借住;
And upon me before all, in particular — whose other portion of fatherland was the East, where indeed I seemed to be a native and a possessor by no means of the lowest rank — evils laid their hand, though long owed to me, because they held me even unwilling, with the wandering prolonged. The very sluggish setting-out of my own retinue first, and the at times discordant prayers of my dear ones, and a mind more often struggling against its own desires, whenever a recurring dread of doubtful outcome delayed the preparations begun, with fortune standing in the way; and on the contrary the habit of quiet, familiar leisure, and the house's many particular comforts enticed my mind — all, alas! filled to overflowing with too many alluring and great delights and with every good thing in a hard time, the house which alone then lacked even a Gothic guest;
1:30
which afterward turned out, by an outcome not slow to be sinister, that — since no special right protected the house — it fell as plunder, given over to the people departing: for we know that some of the Goths strove with the utmost humanity to be of help to their hosts by protecting them. But to me, beyond the aforesaid condition, was added also a new cause of greater toil: that the tyrant Attalus, seeking vain consolations, burdened me in my absence with an empty name of honor, granting me the office of count of the private largess — which he knew rested on no revenue, and he himself had now even ceased to trust in his own kingdom, relying indeed only on Goths now ill-disposed toward himself, whom he could keep for the protection of his present life but not also of his empire, himself supported by nothing, neither by his own resources nor by any soldier.
1:31
unde ego non partes infirmi omnino tyranni, sed Gothicam fateor pacem me esse secutum, quae tunc ipsorum consensu optata Gothorum paulo post aliis cessit mercede redempta nec penitenda manet, cum iam in re publica nostra cernamus plures Gothico florere. fauore, tristia quaeque tamen perpessis antea multis, pars ego magna fui quorum, priuatus et ipse cunctis quippe bonis propriis patriaeque superstes. namque profecturi regis praecepto Atiulfi nostra ex urbe Gothi, fuerant qui in pace recepti, non aliter nobis quam belli iure subactis aspera quaeque omni urbe inrogauere cremata:
Wherefore I, I confess, did not follow the party of the wholly weak tyrant, but the Gothic peace — which then, desired by the consent of the Goths themselves, a little later passed to others, redeemed for a price, and remains not to be repented of, since now in our commonwealth we see many flourishing by Gothic favor; yet after many had endured beforehand all kinds of sorrows — of whom I was a great part, myself also stripped of all my own goods, surviving my fatherland. For when the Goths who had been received in peace were about to set out from our city by command of King Athaulf, they inflicted upon us, no otherwise than upon men subdued by the law of war, every harsh thing, the whole city being burned:
1:32
in qua me inuentum comitem tum principis eius, imperio cuius sociatos non sibi norant, nudauere bonis simul omnibus et genetricem iuxta meam mecum, communi sorte subactos, uno hoc se nobis credentes parcere captis, quod nos inmunes poena paterentur abire, cunctarumque tamen comitum simul et famularum, euentum fuerant nostrum quaecumque secutae, inlaeso penitus nullo adtemptante pudore, me grauiore tamen releuato suspicione munere diuino, iuges cui debeo grates, filia ut ante mea per me sociata marito excedens patria communi clade careret. Nec postrema tamen tolerati meta laboris ista fuit nostri, quem diximus:
in which, finding me to be a count of their prince — under whose command they knew that those allied were not allied to himself — they stripped me of all my goods together with my mother beside me, both subdued by a common lot, believing they spared us captives in this one thing only: that they suffered us to depart unharmed by punishment, together with all our female companions and handmaids, whoever had followed our fortune, with no one's modesty in the least attempted or violated; yet I was relieved of a heavier dread by a divine gift, for which I owe perpetual thanks, namely that my daughter, joined to a husband through me beforehand, had departed her fatherland and so was spared the common disaster. Nor yet was this the final limit of the toil I have endured, which I have spoken of:
1:33
ilico namque exactos laribus patriis tectisque crematis obsidio hostilis uicina excepit in urbe Uasatis, patria maiorum et ipsa meorum, et grauior multo circumfusa hostilitate . factio seruilis paucorum mixta furori insano iuuenum * * licet ingenuorum, armata in caedem specialem nobilitatis. quam tu, iuste deus, insonti a sanguine auertens ilico paucorum sedasti morte reorum instantemque mihi specialem percussorem me ignorante alio iussisti ultore perire, suetus quippe nouis tibi me obstringere donis, pro quis me scirem grates debere perennes.
for straightway, when we had been driven from our ancestral hearths and our roofs burned, a hostile siege caught us in the neighboring city of Bazas, the homeland of my own forebears as well, with a hostility far heavier surrounding it. A servile faction of a few, mingled with the insane fury of young men — though of free birth — was armed for the special slaughter of the nobility. But you, O just God, turning it away from innocent blood, straightway quelled it by the death of a few of the guilty, and the special assassin pressing upon me you ordered to perish, without my knowing it, by another avenger — being accustomed indeed to bind me to yourself by new gifts, for which I knew I owed perpetual thanks.
1:34
sed mihi tam subiti concusso sorte pericli, quo me intra urbem percelli posse uiderem, subrepsit, fateor, nimium trepido nouus error, ut me praesidio regis dudum mihi cari, cuius nos populus longa obsidione premebat, urbe ab obsessa sperarem abscedere posse agmine carorum magno comitante meorum, hac tamen hos nostros spe sollicitante paratus, quod scirem imperio gentis cogente Gothorum inuitum regem populis incumbere nostris. explorandi igitur studio digressus ab urbe ad regem intrepidus nullo obsistente tetendi, laetior ante tamen, primo quam affarer amicum alloquio, gratumque magis fore quem mihi rebar.
But to me, shaken by the lot of so sudden a peril, by which I saw I could be struck down within the city, there crept in — I confess — a new and excessively fearful error: that, by the protection of a king long dear to me, whose people were pressing us in a long siege, I might hope to be able to withdraw from the besieged city, with a great band of my dear ones accompanying me; yet with this hope alarming these our preparations: because I knew that the king, compelled by the command of the Gothic nation, was bearing down unwillingly upon our peoples. Therefore, setting out from the city in eagerness to explore, I made my way undaunted to the king, with no one opposing, yet glad beforehand — before I first addressed my friend in speech — and thinking he would be more gracious to me than he was.
1:35
But when I had searched out, as best I could, the inner wish of the man, he denied that he could grant me protection while I was stationed outside the city, declaring it now no longer safe for himself; nor would he suffer me to return to the city otherwise than as I had come, unless he himself should soon be received with me into the city — being well aware that the Goths were again threatening me with dire things, and desiring to free himself from their right. I was struck dumb, I confess, terrified by the proposed condition and by the excessive dread of the peril foretold; but, with God taking pity — who, when implored, is always present everywhere to the afflicted — a little later, my mind recovered, though trembling, I myself boldly took pains, for my own sake, to support the counsel of my wavering friend, dissuading the difficult things which I knew were to be wholly refused, but urging that what was to be granted should be attempted as soon as possible.
1:36
quae non sero probans uir prudens ipse secutus, ilico consultis per se primatibus urbis rem coeptam adcelerans una sub nocte peregit auxiliante deo, cuius iam munus habebat, quo nobis populoque suo succurrere posset. concurrit pariter cunctis ab sedibus omnis turba Alanarum armatis sociata maritis. prima uxor regis Romanis traditur obses, 380 adiuncto pariter regis caro quoque nato, reddor et ipse meis pactae inter foedera pacis, communi tamquam Gothico saluatus ab hoste, uallanturque urbis pomeria milite Alano, acceptaque dataque fide certare parato pro nobis, nuper quos ipse obsederat hostis.
These things the prudent man, approving without delay and following them himself, straightway, having consulted on his own the chief men of the city, hastening the undertaking, carried out in a single night, with God helping, whose gift he now possessed, by which he could succor us and his own people. There rushed together likewise from all their dwellings the whole throng of the Alani, joined with their armed husbands. First the king's wife is handed over to the Romans as a hostage, with the king's dear son joined alongside her, and I myself am restored to my people amid the treaties of the agreed peace, saved as it were from the common Gothic foe; and the city's outer bounds are walled with Alani soldiery, faith having been received and given, and made ready to contend on our behalf — they who but lately had themselves besieged us as enemies.
1:37
- mira urbis facies, cuius magna undique muros turba indiscreti sexus circumdat inermis subiecta exterius; muris haerentia nostris agmina barbarica plaustris uallantur et armis. qua se truncatam parte agminis haut mediocris circumiecta uidens populantum turba Gothorum, ilico diffidens tut« se posse morari hoste intestino subito in sua uiscera uerso, nil temptare ausa ulterius properanter abire sponte sua legit. cuius non sero secuti exemplum et nostri, quos diximus, auxiliares discessere, fidem pacis seruare parati Romanis, quoquo ipsos sors oblata tulisset.
A wondrous sight was the city, whose walls a great throng of both sexes, undistinguished and unarmed, surrounded, set below on the outside; while clinging to our walls the barbarian columns were fortified with wagons and arms. Seeing itself cut off on the side where a band by no means small had been encircled, the surrounding throng of plundering Goths, straightway distrusting that it could delay there, with a domestic foe suddenly turned against its own vitals, daring to attempt nothing further, chose to depart hastily of its own accord. Not slow to follow their example, our auxiliaries too, of whom we have spoken, departed, ready to keep faith of the peace with the Romans, wherever the lot that befell them should carry them.
1:38
atque ita res * * temere a me coepta benigno auxilio domini euentu est expleta secundo, erroremque meum deus in noua gaudia uertit multorum pariter mecum obsidione leuata, adcrescunt quae cuncta mihi simul ad referendas, Christe, tibi grates, quas inpos soluere uerbis parte rependo aliqua, semper debere professus. Sit tamen ista satis super his me esse profatum, - inter barbaricas longo quae tempore gentes expositus gessi.
And thus the matter, rashly begun by me, was completed by the kindly help of the Lord with a favorable outcome, and God turned my error into new joys, the siege being lifted from many together with me — all which things accrue to me at once for rendering thanks to you, O Christ, which, unable to discharge in words, I repay in some part, having professed that I am always in debt. Yet let this be enough that I have spoken of these things over and above — the things I did, exposed for a long time among the barbarian nations.
1:39
quorum mihi plurima saepe aduersa experto rursum suasere moranti linquendas patriae sedes quantocius essequod fecisse prius fuerat magis utile nobisilla ut contento peteremus litora cursu, pars ubi magna mihi etiamnunc salua manebat materni census, conplures sparsa per urbes Argiuas atque Epiri ueterisque nouaeque, per quas non minima numerosis farta colonis praedia diffusa nec multum dissociata quamuis profusis dominis nimiumque remissis praebere expensas potuissent exuberantes.
Many of these adversities, often experienced, persuaded me again, as I lingered, that the dwellings of my fatherland must be left as quickly as possible — which it had been more useful for us to have done sooner — so that with steady course we might seek those shores where a great part of my maternal estate still remained safe to me, scattered through several Argive cities and of Epirus, both old and new, through which estates by no means small, crammed with numerous tenants, spread out and not greatly separated, although their owners were lavish and too lax, might have furnished overflowing revenues.
1:40
But not even tardily did the outcome follow my prayers, that I might either migrate hence to the longed-for places, or that some part of my ancestral goods might remain to me amid the barbarian plunderings under a hostile right and the Roman wickedness, which ran riot against all laws, licentiously, at different times, to my loss; from which crime committed even the names dear to me cannot acquit themselves — that which is the greater cause of my grief, since the losses of property are heaped upon me with the losses of love, the love which I know I owe faithful to my nearest kindred, however offended, nor do I deem it right not to render it.
1:41
But if I am rightly wise, this lot must now be welcomed by me with gratitude, which has pleased you, O Christ, who are now preparing for me things far better than when, more carefree myself, I thought a propitiated favor stood by our prayers — when my joyful house flourished, abounding in great delights, nor did a lesser pomp of honor prevail, furnished with attendants and propped up by crowds of clients.
1:42
That I loved these things, soon to perish, at that time now grieves me, and at last, growing old with better understanding, I recognize that they were profitably withdrawn from me, so that with my earthly and fleeting wealth lost I might learn rather to seek things that would remain forever — late indeed, but nothing, O God, is ever late to you, who, abiding without end, know no end to your compassion, and alone know how to succor the ignorant, anticipating beforehand the prayers of many petitioners and, beyond what we ask, providing good things for us; and even to those in doubt as to what each should pray for himself, you deny many things asked for, being readier to give things more fitting to those who know how to set your gifts above their own wishes.
1:43
namque et me moresque meos quanto prior ipso me melius nosses, in me prodendo probasti, quem maiora meis audentem uiribus ante prospiciens melius per te mihi consuluisti conatus inhibendo meos nimis alta petentes, auderem ut monachi perfecto uiuere ritu, cum mihi plena domus caris affectibus esset, qui sibi seruari consuetam indicere curam posse uiderentur, filii, mater, socrus, uxor cum grege non minimo famularum quippe suarum, quem totum pariter peregrinae exponere terrae \\ nec ratio aut pietas mens aut religiosa sinebat.
For indeed, by how much you knew me and my ways better than I knew myself, this you proved by disclosing it within me, whom — daring greater things than my strength allowed before — by foreseeing better through you, you counseled to my good by checking my endeavors that aimed too high: that I should dare to live by the perfected rule of a monk, when my house was full of dear affections — wife, mother, mother-in-law, children, who seemed able to enjoin upon themselves the accustomed care of being preserved for me, together with no small flock indeed of their own handmaids; and to expose all of them alike to a foreign land neither reason nor filial duty nor a religious mind permitted.
1:44
sed tua magna manus diuina et prouida uirtus consilio sanctorum cuncta operando peregit, suadentum mihi tum morem seruare uetustum, quem semel inuectum maiorum traditione nunc etiam seruans ecclesia nostra teneret; confessusque igitur, penitenda quae mihi noram, proposita studui constrictus uiuere lege, non digno fortasse pians commissa labore, sed rectam seruare fidem non inscius ipse, errorum discendo uias per dogmata praua, quae reprobans sociata aliis nunc respuo culpis.
But your great hand and divine and provident power, working all things by the counsel of the saints, brought it to pass that I should then keep the ancient custom urged upon me, which, once introduced by the tradition of our forefathers, our Church even now keeps and holds; and so, having confessed the things I knew were to be repented of, I took pains, bound by the appointed law, to live according to it — atoning for my offenses perhaps not by worthy labor, yet not myself unknowing how to keep the right faith, having learned the ways of errors through perverse dogmas, which, rejecting and counting them now among my other faults, I spit out.
1:45
post autem, exacta iam ter trieteride quinta, rite recurrente statuto tempore pascha ad tua, Christe Deus, altaria sacra reuersus te miserante tua gaudens sacramenta recepi ante hos ter decies super et bis quattuor annossaluo tunc etiam propriae domus ordine, nuper 480 qui fuerat, linqui et quam iam non posse probarem nec retinere tamen peregrino iugiter esset possibile adstricto iam censu; quominus autem rem propriam expeterem, cuius meritumque situmque anteriore loco iam me exposuisse recordor, obstabat flecti ad communia commoda coniunx indocilis nimioque metu nauigare recusans, quam nec inuitam trahere usquam fas mihi rebar parque nefas esset subtractis linquere natis.
Afterward, when the fifteenth three-year period had been completed, at Easter recurring duly at the appointed time, returning to your sacred altars, O Christ God, by your mercy I gladly received your sacraments — this was a hundred and four-and-thirty years before now... [thirty-three years before now: the order of my own household, which had lately existed, being still safe, an order which I could prove could now neither be left nor yet kept, bound continually abroad as I now was with my revenue diminished]; and, that I should pursue my own property less — whose merit and situation I recall I have already set forth in an earlier place — there stood in the way my wife, untaught how to bend to the common advantages, and refusing through excessive fear to sail, whom I deemed it not right to drag anywhere unwilling, and it would be an equal wrong to leave her by abandoning our children.
1:46
And thus, frustrated of the now better hope of enjoying rest in my own affairs after many adversities, I pass a perpetual exile through the varying lot of my days, now long since bereft of all my dear ones — first my mother-in-law and my mother, then my wife also having died, who, though she had been contrary to my right desires, with fear standing in the way, yet by her death too became a grief to me, then withdrawn when she might rather have been suited to the solace of a life joined to my old age; she who already failed me as my children departed from me — not indeed with like zeal nor at the same time, but kindled alike by love of liberty, which they thought could fall to them in greater measure at Bordeaux, although under a Gothic fellow-settler.
1:47
quod licet inuito me illos uoluisse dolerem, sic conpensandum tamen hoc ipsum mihi rebar, commoda ut absentis praesentum cura iuuaret, fructus quippe rei nostrae, quicumque fuissent, sponte sua mecum paulatim participando. sed cito praereptus iuuenis iam presbyter unus morte repentina luctum mihi liquit acerbum, summa autem rerum, tenuit quascumque, mearum tota erepta mihi multis. fuit una rapina. insuper ipse etiam, uelut ad solacia nostra qui superest, actu simul euentuque sinistro inter amicitias uersatus regis et iras destituit prope cuncta pari mea commoda sorte.
Though I grieved that they wished this against my will, yet I thought that this very thing must be compensated thus: that the care of those present should aid the comforts of one absent, since the fruits of our property, whatever they had been, would little by little be shared with me of their own accord. But quickly one of them, a youth, now a presbyter, snatched away by sudden death, left me a bitter grief; and the sum total of my affairs, whatever they retained, all wrested from me, became for many a single act of plunder. Moreover, even he himself, who as it were survives for our consolation, involved by a deed and outcome alike sinister amid the friendships and wraths of the king, has stripped me of nearly all my advantages by a like lot.
1:48
Atque ita subtracta spe omni solaciorum, quae mihi per nostros rebar contingere posse, cunctaque sero probans a te magis esse petenda, quae cupimus, deus alme, subest cui summa potestas, Massiliae demum pauper consistere legi, urbe quidem in qua plures sancti essent mihi cari, parua autem census substantia familiaris nec spes magna nouis subitura ex fructibus esset, non ager instructus propriis cultoribus ullus, non uinetaquibus solis urbs utitur ipsa omne ad praesidium uitae aliunde parandumsed tantum domus urbana uicinus et hortus atque ad perfugium secreti paruus agellus, non sine uite quidem uel pomis, sed sine terra digna coli;
於是,既然我以為能藉自己的人而臨到我的一切安慰之盼望都已撤去,並終於證實我們所渴望的一切,反倒當向你尋求——慈愛的神啊,至高的權能歸於你之下——我終於選擇以一貧者的身分定居於馬賽:那城裡確有許多我所親愛的聖徒,但我家業的家產微薄,也沒有大的指望靠新的收益維持;沒有配備自己耕作者的田地,沒有葡萄園——而那城本身唯靠葡萄園供應,因生活的一切所需都須從別處取得——只有一所城內的宅院與毗鄰的園子,以及一小塊作隱居避所的田地,雖非全無葡萄樹或果樹,卻沒有值得耕種的土地;
And so, with every hope of consolations withdrawn, which I thought could come to me through my own people, and proving at last that all the things we desire must rather be sought from you, O kindly God, beneath whom lies the supreme power, I chose at length to settle as a poor man at Marseilles — a city in which indeed there were many saints dear to me, but the small substance of my family fortune, nor was there great hope that it would be sustained by new revenues; no field furnished with its own cultivators, no vineyards — by which alone the city itself is served, since every provision for life must be procured from elsewhere — but only an urban house and a neighboring garden, and for a refuge of seclusion a small plot, not indeed without a vine or fruit-trees, but without land worthy to be tilled;
1:49
uerum exigui iactura laboris suasit et in uacuum culturae inpendere curam uix plena exesi per iugera quattuor agri et fundare domum summa in crepidine saxi, ne quid de spatio terrae minuisse uiderer. porro autem expensas, uitae quas posceret usus, conductis studui ex agris sperare paratas, donec plena magis seruis mansit domus et dum maiores melior uires mihi praebuit aetas. at postquam in peius pariter mutauit utraque condicio instabilis semper generaliter aeui, paulatim, fateor, curis euictus et annis exul inops caelebs, * * facile in noua uersus consilia et uaria multum ratione uacillans, Burdigalam reuocare gradum conducere duxi;
但一點小勞苦的損失甚至勸我枉費耕作之力於僅僅四優格、貧瘠的田地上,並在一塊岩石的邊緣上建房,免得我顯得削減了土地的任何空間。此外,生活所需的開銷,我盡力指望能從租來的田地預備有餘,只要那家業還較滿地備有奴僕,而較佳的年歲還供給我更大的氣力。但當這兩種境況一同轉壞——這年歲的境況本就普遍地永不穩定——我承認,被操勞與年歲漸漸壓倒,成了一個流亡者、赤貧、無偶,輕易轉向新的計議,在各樣盤算中大為動搖,我便認為最好把腳步引回波爾多,去租一處住所;
but the loss of a small labor persuaded me even to spend the care of cultivation in vain over scarcely four full jugera of worn-out field, and to found a house upon the very edge of a rock, lest I should seem to have diminished anything of the space of land. Furthermore, the expenses which the use of life demanded, I took pains to hope to have ready from rented fields, so long as the house remained more fully stocked with slaves, and while a better age supplied me greater strength. But after both conditions changed for the worse alike — the condition of an age ever unstable in general — little by little, I confess, overcome by cares and years, an exile, destitute, unwed, easily turned to new counsels and wavering much in varied reckoning, I deemed it best to lead my steps back to Bordeaux, to rent a dwelling;
1:50
yet the result did not follow upon our undertaking, although utility joined to my wishes would have aided itself. This, for the strengthening of my faith — as I think — it is right for me to believe was provided for me by you, O Christ, in order that, by a long, gradual use of experience, I might prove how much your grace could grant me, when I saw that, with much of my revenue withdrawn through losses, the appearance of my house endured for me, and that the expenses were renewed often enough by your provision.
1:51
pro qua sorte quidem uitae scio me tibi grates inmodicas debere, deus, pro me tamen ipse nescio, si saluo possim gaudere pudoresiue quod ipse adhuc propriae specie domus utens, seu quod diuitibus contentus cedere natis omnia, quae possunt etiamnunc nostra uideri, expensis patior me sustentari alienisni mihi nostra fides, quae nil proprium docet esse, subueniat, tam tuto aliena ut nostra putemus, quam nos nostra aliis debemus participanda.
For this lot of life indeed I know I owe you immoderate thanks, O God; yet for myself I know not whether I can rejoice with my modesty unimpaired — whether because I still myself use the appearance of my own house, or because, content to yield to my rich children all things that can even now seem ours, I suffer myself to be sustained by others' expenses — unless our faith, which teaches that nothing is one's own, came to my aid, so that we might as safely deem others' goods our own as we owe our own to be shared with others.
1:52
Nec tamen hoc ipso uitae me in ordine passus, 565 ambiguum nutare diu, uelociter ultro solari es dignate, deus, nostramque senectam inualidam uariis diuerso tempore morbis iugiter adsuetus blandis palpare medellis, nunc quoque sic ipsi iuuenascere posse dedisti, ut, cum iam penitus fructus de rebus auitis sperare ulterius nullos me posse probasses, cunctaque ipsa etiam, quae iam tenuatus habere Massiliae potui, amissa iam proprietate conscripta adstrictus sub condicione tenerem, emptorem mihi ignotum de gente Gothorum excires, nostri quondam qui iuris agellum mercari cupiens pretium transmitteret ultro, haut equidem iustum, uerum tamen accipienti uotiuum, fateor, possem quo scilicet una et ueteres lapsi census fulcire ruinas et uitare noua cari mihi damna pudoris.
Nor yet in this very ordering of life did you suffer me to waver in doubt for long, but swiftly of your own accord you deigned to console me, O God, and, ever accustomed to soothe our infirm old age, troubled at different times by various diseases, with gentle remedies, now too you granted me thus to be able to grow young again: that, when you had proved I could no longer hope for any fruits from my ancestral estate, and even all those things which, now reduced, I had been able to hold at Marseilles, the ownership now lost, I held bound under a contract drawn up — you summoned forth for me an unknown buyer of the Gothic nation, who, desiring to purchase the little plot once of my right, sent the price of his own accord, not indeed just, yet — I confess — answering to my prayer for one receiving it, by which namely I might at once both prop up the old fallen revenues and avoid a new loss of the modesty dear to me.
1:53
Quo me donatum praestanti munere gaudens ecce nouas, deus omnipotens, tibi debeo grates, exuperent quae paene alias cumulentque priores, quas contestatas tota haec mea pagina praesens continet, et quamquam spatiis prolixior amplis euagata diu claudi se iam prope poscat, nostra tamen iugis deuotio ponere finem nescit ad explenda tibi debita munia, Christe, hoc unum ipse bonum statuens, hoc esse tenendum conscius, hoc toto cupiens adquirere corde, omnibus usque locis et tempore iugiter omni te praefando loqui, te * meminisse silendo.
Rejoicing that I was endowed with this surpassing gift, behold, O almighty God, I owe you new thanks, which may almost surpass the others and heap up the former ones which this present page of mine, attested in full, contains; and although, having wandered far at greater length through ample spaces, it now nearly demands to be closed, yet our continual devotion knows not how to set an end to fulfilling the duties owed to you, O Christ — establishing this one good, conscious that this is to be held, desiring with my whole heart to acquire this: in all places always and at every time continually to speak of you by proclaiming you beforehand, and to remember you even in keeping silence.
1:54
quocirca et totum tibi me, deus optime, debens cunctaque, quae mea sunt, opus hoc abs te, deus, orsus nunc quoque concludens tibi desino teque precatus saepius attente nunc multo inpensius oro, ut, quia uita in hac, qua nunc ego dego, senili ipsa morte magis plura (haut) agnosco timenda, nec mihi, quid potius cupiam, discernere promptum estquamcumque in partem tua iam sententia uergit, da, precor, intrepidam contra omnia tristia mentem constantemque tuae uirtutis munere praesta, ut, qui iam dudum placitis tibi uiuo dicatus legibus et sponsam conor captare salutem, nec uicina magis pro condicione senectae tempora plus metuam mortis, cui subiacet omnis aetas, ambiguae nec me discrimine uitae suspectum exagitent uarii formidine casus, uitari quos posse, deus, te praesule fido, sed, quaecumque manet nostrum sors ultima finem, mitiget hanc spes, Christe, tui conspectus et omnem discutiat dubium fiducia certa pauorem, me, uel in hoc proprio mortali corpore dum sum, esse tuum, cuius sunt omnia, uel resolutum corporis in quacumque tui me parte futurum.
Wherefore, owing my whole self to you, most good God, and all that is mine, this work, begun from you, O God, now also concluding, I bring to an end for you, and having prayed to you rather often and attentively, now I beseech you much more earnestly: that, since in this senile life which I now lead I recognize that there are more things to be feared than from death itself, and it is not easy for me to discern what I should rather desire — to whatever side your judgment now inclines, grant, I pray, a mind undaunted against all sorrows, and bestow it constant by the gift of your power, so that I, who now long since live dedicated to laws pleasing to you and strive to lay hold of the betrothed salvation, may neither, by reason of the nearer condition of old age, fear more the times of death, to which every age is subject, nor, suspect amid the crisis of doubtful life, may varied chances harass me with the dread of fear — chances which I trust, O God, with you as my protector, can be avoided; but, whatever final lot awaits our end, may the hope of your countenance, O Christ, soften it, and may sure confidence shatter all doubtful dread, that I, even while I am in this my own mortal body, am yours, whose all things are, or, released from the body, shall in whatever part be yours.
