2:1
Caput 1: De Vino Quod De Aqua Factum Est ALIO in tempore, cum vir venerandus in Scotia apud sanctum Findbarrum episcopum, adhuc juvenis, sapientiam sacrae Scripturae addiscens, commaneret, quadam solenni die vinum ad sacrificale mysterium casu aliquo minime inveniebatur: de cujus defectu cum ministros altaris inter se conquerentes audiret, ad fontem sumpto pergit urceo, ut ad sacrae Eucharistiae ministeria aquam, quasi diaconus, fontanam hauriret: ipse quippe illis in diebus erat in diaconatus gradu administrans. Vir itaque beatus aquaticum, quod de latice hausit, elementum, invocato nomine Domini Jesu Christi, fideliter benedixit, qui in Cana Galileae aquam in vinum convertit:
Chapter 1: Concerning the Wine which was Made from Water. At another time, when the venerable man was abiding in Ireland with the holy bishop Findbarr, while still a youth, learning the wisdom of Sacred Scripture, on a certain solemn day wine for the sacrificial mystery was by some chance nowhere to be found: when he heard the ministers of the altar complaining among themselves of its lack, he goes to the spring with a pitcher he had taken, that he might draw spring-water for the ministry of the sacred Eucharist, as a deacon: for in those days he was administering in the rank of the diaconate. And so the blessed man faithfully blessed the watery element, which he had drawn from the liquid, having invoked the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, who at Cana of Galilee turned water into wine:
2:2
by whom also, working this miracle, the lower nature — that is, the watery — was, through the hands of the praiseworthy man, converted into the more pleasing kind, namely the vinous. And so the holy man, returned from the spring and entering the church, sets down beside the altar a pitcher having within itself such a liquor; and to the ministers he said: 'You have wine, which the Lord Jesus has sent for performing His mysteries.' When this was known, the holy bishop with the ministers render exceeding thanks to God. But the holy youth ascribed this not to himself, but to the holy bishop Vinnian. And so this first proof of power Christ the Lord declared through His disciple, the same thing which, placing the beginning of signs at Cana of Galilee, He had wrought through Himself.
2:3
Hujus, inquam, libelli, quasi quaedam lucerna, illustret exordium, quod per nostrum Columbam diale manifestatum est miraculum; ut deinceps transeamus ad cetera, quae per ipsum ostensa sunt, virtutum miracula. Caput 2: De Alicujus Arboris Fructa Amaro Per Sancti Benedictionem In Dulcedinem Verso QUAEDAM arbor erat valde pomosa prope monasterium Roboris Campi, in australi ejus parte; de qua cum incolae loci quoddam haberent pro nimia fructus amaritudine querimonium, quadam die Sanctus ad eam accessit autumnali tempore, vidensque lignum incassum abundos habere fructus qui ex eis gustantes plus laederent quam delectarent;
我說,願這藉著我們的哥倫巴、憑神能所顯明的神蹟,如同一盞燈,照亮這小書的開端;好叫我們此後可以轉到藉著他所顯出的其餘大能的神蹟。第二章:論某樹苦果因聖徒的祝福變為甘甜。在平原的羅布爾修道院附近,南面有一棵極其多果的樹;當那地方的居民因其果子過於苦澀而有抱怨時,在某一天的秋季,聖徒走近它,見這樹白白地結滿果子,因為嘗它果子的人受害多於得樂;
Let this miracle, I say, which was manifested through our Columba by divine power, like some lamp, illumine the beginning of this little book; that thereafter we may pass on to the rest of the miracles of powers which were shown through him. Chapter 2: Concerning the Bitter Fruit of a Certain Tree Turned into Sweetness by the Saint's Blessing. There was a certain very fruitful tree near the monastery of Robur of the Plain, in its southern part; concerning which, when the inhabitants of the place had a certain complaint on account of the excessive bitterness of its fruit, on a certain day the Saint approached it in the autumn season, and seeing the tree to have its abundant fruit in vain, since those who tasted of them were more harmed than delighted;
2:4
sancta elevata manu, benedicens ait, In nomine omnipotentis Dei omnis tua amaritudo, O arbor amara, a te recedat; tuaque huc usque amarissima nunc in dulcissima vertantur poma. Mirum dictu, dicto citius, eodemque momento, ejusdem arboris omnia poma, amissa amaritudine, in miram, secundum verbum Sancti, versa sunt dulcedinem. Caput 3: De Segete Post Medium Aestatis Tempus Seminata, Et In Exordio Augusti Mensis, Sancto Orante, Messa, In Ioua Conversante Insula ALIO in tempore Sanctus suos misit monachos ut de alicujus plebeii agellulo virgarum fasciculos ad hospitium afferent construendum.
raising his holy hand, blessing it, he said: 'In the name of almighty God, O bitter tree, let all your bitterness depart from you; and let your fruits, hitherto most bitter, now be turned into sweetest.' Wonderful to tell, swifter than the word, and in that same moment, all the fruits of that tree, their bitterness lost, were turned, according to the Saint's word, into a marvellous sweetness. Chapter 3: Concerning the Crop Sown after Midsummer Time and, at the Beginning of the Month of August, Reaped at the Saint's Prayer, while He was Dwelling on the Island of Iona. At another time the Saint sent his monks to bring bundles of rods from the little field of a certain commoner for the building of a lodging.
2:5
Qui cum ad Sanctum, oneraria repleta navi de supradictis virgularum materiis, reversi venirent, dicerentque plebeium ejusdem causa dispendii valde contristatum; Sanctus consequenter praecipiens dicit, Ne ergo illum scandalizemus virum, ad ipsum a nobis bis terni deferantur hordei modii, eosdemque his in diebus arata ipse seminet in terra. Quibus ad plebeium, Findchanum nomine, juxta Sancti jussionem, missis, et coram eo cum tali commendatione adsignatis, gratanter accipiens, it, Quomodo post medium aesteum tempus seges seminata, contra hujus naturam terrae, proficiet? Marita e contra, Fac, ait, secundum Sancti mandatum, cui Dominus donabit quodcumque ab eo postulaverit.
When they came back to the Saint, the cargo ship filled with the aforesaid materials of rods, and said that the commoner was greatly grieved on account of that loss; the Saint accordingly, giving command, says: 'Lest then we cause that man to stumble, let twice three measures of barley be carried to him from us, and let him himself sow them in these days in plowed land.' When these had been sent to the commoner, named Findchan, according to the Saint's command, and assigned in his presence with such a charge, gladly receiving them, he says: 'How will a crop sown after midsummer time, contrary to the nature of this land, prosper?' His wife, on the contrary, said: 'Do according to the Saint's command, to whom the Lord will grant whatever he asks of Him.'
2:6
But those who were sent also added this, saying: 'Saint Columba, who sent us to you with this gift, gave this command through us concerning your crop, saying: "Let that man trust in the omnipotence of God: his crop, although sown twelve days after the beginning of the month of June, will be reaped at the beginning of the month of August."' The commoner complies, plowing and sowing; and the harvest, which he had sown at the aforesaid time against hope, with the wonder of all his neighbours he reaped ripe at the beginning of the month of August, according to the Saint's word, in the place of land which is called Delcros. Chapter 4:
2:7
De Morbifera Nube, Et Plurimorum Sanitate ALIO itidem in tempore, cum Sanctus in Ioua commoraretur insula, sedens in monticulo qui Latine Munitio Magna dicitur, videt ab aquilone nubem densam et pluvialem, de mari die serena obortam: qua ascendente visa, Sanctus ad quendam de suis juxta se monachum sedentem, nomine Silnanum, filium Nemani-don Mocusogin, Haec nubes, ait, valde nocua hominibus et pecoribus erit; hacque die velocius transvolans super aliquantam Scotiae partem, hoc est, ab illo rivulo qui dicitur Ailbine usque ad Vadum Clied, pluviam vespere distillabit morbiferam, quae gravia et purulenta humanis in corporibus, et in pecorum uberibus, nasci faciet ulcera;
論帶來疾病的雲,以及許多人的得醫治。在又另一個時候,當聖徒住在愛奧那島時,他坐在一座小山上(拉丁語稱為「大堡壘」),看見從北方有一片濃密多雨的雲,在晴朗的日子從海上升起:當聖徒見它上升時,便對坐在他旁邊一位名叫西爾南、是內曼-唐.莫庫索金之子的修士說:「這雲對人和牲畜必極有害;今日它要迅速飛越愛爾蘭某一帶——就是從那名叫艾爾比內的小河,直到克利埃德的渡口——在傍晚必降下帶來疾病的雨,這雨必使人身上和牲畜的乳房上長出嚴重而化膿的瘡;
Concerning the Disease-Bearing Cloud, and the Healing of Very Many. At yet another time, when the Saint was staying on the island of Iona, sitting on a little hill which is in Latin called Munitio Magna (the Great Fortress), he sees from the north a dense and rainy cloud, risen from the sea on a clear day: which, when seen ascending, the Saint said to a certain monk of his sitting beside him, named Silnan, son of Neman-don Mocusogin: 'This cloud will be very harmful to men and cattle; and on this day, flying swiftly over a certain part of Ireland — that is, from that little river which is called Ailbine as far as the Ford of Clied — in the evening it will distil a disease-bearing rain, which will cause grievous and festering ulcers to arise on human bodies and on the udders of cattle;
2:8
Quid moramur? Die crastina, his quae necessaria erant citius praeparatis, Silnanus, accepto de manu Sancti pane bendicto, in pace enavigavit.
by which men, diseased, and cattle, troubled by that venomous oppression even unto death, will suffer. But we, having pity on them, ought, the Lord taking pity, to come to the aid of their sicknesses. You therefore, Silnan, now descending with me from the mountain, prepare a voyage for tomorrow — life accompanying and God willing — having received from me bread blessed with the invocation of the name of God, by which, dipped in water, men sprinkled with it, and cattle, will quickly recover health.' Why do we delay? On the morrow, the necessary things being quickly prepared, Silnan, having received from the Saint's hand the blessed bread, sailed away in peace.
2:9
Quid plura? Silnanus, verbo obsecutus Sancti, propsera et celeri navigatione, auxiliante Domino, ad supra memoratam perveniens partem illius regionis, plebem de qua Sanctus praedixerat devastatam nubis praedictae morbifera reperiit pluvia superpluente, citius praecurrentis.
To him, departing from him at that same hour, the Saint adds this comforting word, saying: 'Trust, son, you will have favourable and prosperous winds day and night, until you arrive at that region which is called Ard Ceannachte, that you may the more quickly come to the aid of the sick there with the health-giving bread.' What more? Silnan, obeying the Saint's word, by a prosperous and swift voyage, the Lord helping, arriving at the aforementioned part of that region, found the people of whom the Saint had foretold devastated by the disease-bearing rain of the aforesaid cloud raining down, swiftly running on ahead.
2:10
Inprimisque bis terni viri in eadem mari vicina domo reperti in extremis morte positi appropinquante, ab eodem Silnano aqua benedictionis aspersi, in eodem die opportunius sanati sunt. Cujus subitae sanationis rumor, per totam illam, morbo pestilentiore vastatam, regionem cito divulgatus, omnem morbidum ad sancti Columbae legatum invitavit populum; qui, juxta Sancti mandatum, homines et pecora pane intincta benedicto aqua conspersit, et continuo plenam recuperantes salutem, homines, cum pecudibus salvati, Christum in sancto Columba cum eximia gratiarum actione laudarunt. In hac itaque suprascripta narratione, ut aestimo, duo haec manifeste pariter comitantur;
首先有六個人,在那同一海邊的一座房子裡被尋見,已奄奄一息,死亡將近,被那同一位西爾南用祝福的水所灑,在同一日更恰當地得了醫治。他們突然得醫治的消息,迅速傳遍那被更兇惡之疫病蹂躪的全地,把每一個病人都召喚到聖哥倫巴的使者那裡;他照聖徒的吩咐,用浸過祝福之水的餅灑人和牲畜,他們立刻恢復了完全的健康,這些人連同牲畜得救了,便極其感恩地在聖哥倫巴身上讚美基督。如此,依我看,在上文這敘述中,這兩件事明顯地一同相伴;
And first of all twice three men, found in a house near that same sea, placed in extremity with death approaching, sprinkled by the same Silnan with the water of blessing, were on that same day more opportunely healed. The report of whose sudden healing, quickly spread abroad through that whole region devastated by the more pestilential disease, summoned every sick person to the legate of Saint Columba; who, according to the Saint's command, sprinkled men and cattle with bread dipped in blessed water, and immediately recovering full health, the men, together with the cattle, being saved, praised Christ in Saint Columba with exceeding thanksgiving. And so in this above-written narration, as I reckon, these two things manifestly accompany each other together;
2:11
that is, the grace of prophecy concerning the cloud, and the miracle of power in the healing of the sick. That these things were in every respect most true, the aforesaid Silnan, soldier of Christ, legate of Saint Columba, testified in the presence of Abbot Segine and the other elders. Chapter 5: Concerning Saint Maugina the Virgin, Daughter of Daimen, who Dwelt in Clochur of the Sons of Daimen. At another time the Saint, when he was staying on the island of Iona, at the first hour of the day, calling a certain brother named Lugaid, whose surname in Irish is called Lathir, addresses him thus, saying: 'Prepare quickly a swift voyage to Ireland, for it is very necessary to me to send you as legate as far as Cocher of the sons of Daimen.
2:12
In hac enim praeterita nocte, casu aliquo, Maugina, sancta virgo, filia Daimeni, ab oratorio post missam domum reversa, titumeum, inclamitans, nomen commemorat, a Domino sperans se accepturam per me consolationem. Quid plura? Lugaido obsecundanti, et consequenter emigranti, Sanctus pineam tradit cum benedictione capsellam, dicens, Benedictio, quae in hac capsellula continetur, quando ad Mauginam pervenies visitandam, in aquae vasculum intingatur eademque benedictionis aqua super ejus infundatur coxam; et statim, invocato Dei nomine, coxale conjungetur os, et densabitur; et sancta virgo plenam recuperabit salutem.
For on this past night, by some chance, Maugina, the holy virgin, daughter of Daimen, returning home from the oratory after Mass, fell and broke her hip-bone, and now lying down, crying out, calls upon my name, hoping to receive from the Lord consolation through me.' What more? To Lugaid, complying and accordingly departing, the Saint hands over a pinewood little casket with a blessing, saying: 'The blessing which is contained in this little casket, when you arrive to visit Maugina, let it be dipped in a vessel of water, and let that same water of blessing be poured upon her hip; and immediately, the name of God being invoked, the hip-bone will be joined and will knit; and the holy virgin will recover full health.'
2:13
Et hoc Sanctus addit, En ego coram in hujus capsae operculo numerum viginti trium annorum describo, quibus sacra virgo in hac praesenti, post eandem salutem, victura est vita. Quae omnia sic plene expleta sunt, sicuti a Sancto praedicta: nam statim ut Lugaidus ad sanctam pervenit virginem, aqua benedicta, sicut Sanctus commendavit, perfusa coxa, sine ulla morula condensato osse, plene sanata est; et in adventu legati sancti Columbae cum ingenti gratiarum actione gavisa, viginti tribus annis, secundum Sancti prophetiam, post sanitatem, in bonis actibus permanens, vixit. Caput 6:
And this the Saint adds: 'Behold, I here describe on the lid of this casket the number of twenty-three years, during which the sacred virgin is to live in this present life after that same healing.' All which things were so fully fulfilled, just as had been foretold by the Saint: for as soon as Lugaid arrived to the holy virgin, the hip being drenched with blessed water as the Saint had charged, without any delay, the bone being knit together, she was fully healed; and at the arrival of the legate of Saint Columba, rejoicing with immense thanksgiving, for twenty-three years, according to the Saint's prophecy, after her healing, remaining in good works, she lived. Chapter 6:
2:14
Concerning Those Things which were Accomplished on the Ridge of Cete in the Healings of Various Diseases. The man of praiseworthy life, as has been handed down to us by those who experienced it, in those days healed, with the name of Christ invoked, the sicknesses of various infirm persons, during which days, going to the conference of the kings on the Ridge of Cete, he stayed a short time. For either by the stretching out of his holy hand, or by water blessed by him, very many sick people sprinkled, or even by the touch of the fringe of his cloak, or by the blessing received of some thing — namely of salt or of bread — and dipped in water, believing, recovered full health. Chapter 7:
2:15
De Petra Salis A Sancto Benedicta, Quam Ignis Absumere Non Potuit ALIO itidem in tempore, Colgu filius Cellachi postulatam a Sancto pertram salis benedictam accipit, sorori et suae nutrici profuturam, quae ophthalmiae laborabat valde gravi languore. Talem eulogiam eadem soror et nutricia de manu fratris accipiens, in pariete super lectum suspendit; casuque post aliquantos contigit dies, ut idem viculus, cum supradictae domuncula feminae, flamma vastante, totus concremaretur. Mirum dictu, illius parietis particula, ne beati viri in ea deperiret suspensa benedictio, post totam ambustam domum, stans illaesa permansit;
論聖徒所祝福的鹽塊,火不能燒滅。在又另一個時候,凱拉赫之子科爾古從聖徒那裡領了他所求的一塊祝福過的鹽,要使他的姊妹和奶媽得益處,她患了眼炎,是極其嚴重的病。這姊妹兼奶媽從她弟兄手中領了這恩賜之物,掛在她床上方的牆上;過了些日子,偶然發生這事:那同一村落,連同前述婦人的小屋,被肆虐的火焰全然焚燒。說也希奇,那一小塊牆壁,免得掛在其上、這蒙福之人的祝福毀壞,竟在整座房子燒毀之後,毫無損傷地立著保存下來;
Concerning the Lump of Salt Blessed by the Saint, which Fire Could Not Consume. At yet another time, Colgu son of Cellach received from the Saint a blessed lump of salt that he had requested, to benefit his sister and his nurse, who was suffering from ophthalmia, a very grievous sickness. Receiving such a gift of grace from her brother's hand, that same sister and nurse hung it on the wall above her bed; and by chance it happened after some days that the same hamlet, with the little house of the aforesaid woman, was wholly burnt up by a devastating flame. Wonderful to tell, that little portion of the wall, lest the blessing of the blessed man hung upon it should perish, after the whole house was burnt down, stood unharmed and remained;
2:16
nec ignis ausus est attingere binales, in quibus talis pendebat salis petra, sudes. Caput 8: De Librario Folio Sancti Manu Descripto, Quod Aqua Corrumpi Non Potuit ALIUD miraculum aestimo non tacendum, quod aliquando factum est per contrarium elementum. Multorum namque transcursis annorum circulis post beati ad Dominum transitum viri, quidam juvenis de equo lapsus in flumine, quod Scotice Boend vocitatur, mersus et mortuus, viginti sub aqua diebus permansit; qui, sicuti sub ascella, cadens, libros in pelliceo reconditos sacculo habebat, ita etiam post supra memoratum dierum numerum est repertus, sacculum cum libris inter brachium et latus continens;
火也不敢觸碰那掛著這樣鹽塊的兩根木樁。第八章:論聖徒親手所寫的書頁,水不能毀壞它。我以為另一件神蹟也不該緘默不提,那是有一次藉著相反的元素所行的。因為這蒙福之人歸主之後,過了許多年的循環,有一位少年從馬上跌入那愛爾蘭語稱為博恩德的河中,淹沒而死,在水底停留了二十天;他跌下時,腋下用一個皮囊藏著一些書,照樣,在前述天數之後,他被尋見時,仍把那盛書的皮囊夾在臂膀與身側之間;
nor did the fire dare to touch the twin stakes on which hung such a lump of salt. Chapter 8: Concerning the Leaf of a Book Written by the Saint's Hand, which Water Could Not Corrupt. I reckon another miracle ought not to be passed over in silence, which once was wrought by means of a contrary element. For after the circuits of many years had passed following the blessed man's passing to the Lord, a certain youth, fallen from a horse into the river which in Irish is called Boend, submerged and dead, remained twenty days under the water; who, as he was falling, had books stored under his armpit in a leathern satchel, and so likewise, after the aforementioned number of days, he was found holding the satchel with the books between his arm and his side;
2:17
and when his corpse had also been carried back to dry land, and the satchel opened, a leaf written by the holy fingers of Saint Columba was found, among the leaves of the other books not only corrupted but even putrefied, dry and in no way corrupted, as if it had been stored away in a little chest. Concerning Another Miracle Wrought in a Similar Matter. At another time, a book of hymns for the week, written by the hand of Saint Columba, fell submerged in a certain river of the parts of the Lagini, from the shoulders of a certain boy slipping from a bridge, together with the leathern satchel in which it was.
2:18
This little book, namely, having remained in the waters from the Lord's Nativity until the completion of the Paschal days, was afterwards found on the bank of the river by certain women walking there, and was carried in its bag — a bag not only soaked but even rotted — to a certain priest named Iogenan, a Pict by race, to whom it had formerly belonged. When this same Iogenan opened the bag, he found his little book uncorrupted, and so clean and dry as if it had remained that whole time in a book-chest and had never fallen into the waters. Moreover, we have likewise learned without doubt from those who knew, that other such things befell, in various places, books written by the hand of holy Columba: namely, that these books, though submerged in waters, could in no way be corrupted.
2:19
Concerning the aforementioned book of Iogenan we received the account from certain truthful and upright men of good testimony, without any ambiguity; they beheld that same little book, after so many days of submersion as mentioned, perfectly white and bright. These two events, though wrought in small matters and shown by contrary elements, namely fire and water, bear witness to the honor of the blessed man, and how great and of what merit he is held to be before the Lord. Chapter 9: Of the Water Which Was Brought Forth from Hard Rock at the Saint's Prayer. And since a little above mention has been made of the element of water, we ought not to keep silent about other miracles which the Lord performed through the Saint in that same created thing, though at different times and places.
2:20
Alio namque in tempore, cum Sanctus in sua conversaretur peregrinatione, infans ei per parentes ad baptizandum offertur iter agenti; et quia in vicinis aqua non inveniebatur locis, Sanctus, ad proximam declinans rupem, flexis genibus paulisper oravit, et post orationem surgens, ejusdem rupis frontem benedixit; de qua consequenter aqua abundanter ebulliens fluxit; in qua continuo infantem baptizavit. De quo etiam baptizato haec, vaticinans, intulit verba, inquiens, Hic puerulususque in extremam longaevus vivet aetatem; in annis juvenilibus carnalibus desideriis satis serviturus, et deinceps Christianae usque in exitum militiae mancipandus, in bona senectute ad Dominum emigrabit.
For at another time, when the Saint was journeying in his pilgrimage, an infant was brought to him by its parents to be baptized as he went on his way; and because no water could be found in the nearby places, the Saint, turning aside to a nearby rock, knelt down and prayed for a little while; and rising after his prayer, he blessed the face of that rock; from which thereupon water gushed forth abundantly and flowed; and in it he immediately baptized the infant. Concerning this baptized child too he uttered these prophetic words, saying: This little boy shall live long, even to extreme old age; in his youthful years he will serve fleshly desires enough, and thereafter, given over to the warfare of Christ until his end, he will depart to the Lord in good old age.
2:21
Quae omnia eidem viro juxta Sancti contigerunt vaticinium. Hic erat Lugucencalad, cujus parentes fuerant in Artdaib Muirchol, ubi hodieque fonticulus, sancti nomine Columbae pollens, cernitur. Caput 10: De Alia Maligna Fontana Aqua Quam Vir Beatus In Pictorum Regione Benedixit ALIO in tempore, vir beatus, cum in Pictorum provincia per aliquot demoraretur dies, audiens in plebe gentili de alio fonte divulgari famam, quem quasi deum stolidi homines, diabolo eorum obcaecante sensus, venerabantur;
這一切都照著聖徒的預言臨到那人身上。這人就是路古肯卡拉德,他的父母曾住在阿爾德布·穆爾科爾,那裡至今仍可見到一道以聖哥倫巴之名著稱的小泉。第十章:論這位有福之人在皮克特人地區所祝福的另一道惡毒的泉水。在另一個時候,這位有福之人在皮克特人的省分逗留了若干日子,聽見外邦百姓中盛傳關於另一道泉源的名聲,愚昧的人因魔鬼蒙蔽了他們的心思,竟把它當作神明來敬奉;
All these things befell that same man according to the Saint's prophecy. This was Lugucencalad, whose parents had dwelt in Artdaib Muirchol, where to this day a little spring, famed by the name of holy Columba, may be seen. Chapter 10: Of Another Malignant Spring-Water Which the Blessed Man Blessed in the Region of the Picts. At another time, the blessed man, while he was tarrying for some days in the province of the Picts, heard a rumor noised abroad among the heathen people about another spring, which foolish men, the devil blinding their senses, venerated as if it were a god;
2:22
for those who drank of that little spring, or deliberately washed their hands or feet in it, would return — by God's permission — smitten by demonic art, either leprous, or blind in one eye, or even crippled, or beset by whatever other infirmities. On account of all which the deluded heathen paid divine honor to the spring. Having learned of this, the Saint on another day approached the spring fearlessly. Seeing this, the magicians — whom he himself often drove off confounded and vanquished by him — greatly rejoiced, supposing of course that he would suffer the like effects from the touch of that harmful water. But he first of all, raising his holy hand, with the invocation of the name of Christ, washed his hands and feet; then thereafter, together with his companions, drank of that same water which he had blessed.
2:23
Caput 11: De Beati Viri In Mari Periculo, Et Tempestatis Eo Orante Subita Sedatione ALIO in tempore, vir sanctus in mari periclitari coepit; totum namque vas navis, valde concussum, magnis undarum cumulis fortiter feriebatur, grandi undeique insistente ventorum tempestate. Nautae tum forte Sancto, sentinam cum illis exhaurire conanti, aiunt, Quod nunc agis non magnopere nobis proficit periclitantibus; exorare potius debes pro pereuntibus.
And from that day the demons departed from that spring, and not only was it permitted to harm no one, but moreover, after the Saint's blessing and his washing in it, many infirmities among the people were healed through that same spring. Chapter 11: Of the Blessed Man's Peril at Sea, and of the Sudden Calming of the Tempest at His Prayer. At another time, the holy man began to be in peril at sea; for the whole vessel of the ship, violently shaken, was being mightily battered by great heaps of waves, with a huge storm of winds pressing in on every side. The sailors then, when the Saint was trying to bail out the bilge-water with them, said to him: What you are now doing is of no great profit to us in our peril; you ought rather to pray for us who are perishing.
2:24
Quo audito, aquam cessat amaram exinanire, hininglas; dulcem vero et intentam precem coepit ad Dominum fundere. Mirum dictu, eodem horae momento, quo Sanctus, in prora stans, estensis ad coelum palmis, Omnipotentem exoravit, tota aeris tempestas et maris saevitia, dicto citius sedata, cessavit, et statim serenissima tranquillitas subsecuta est. Qui vero navi inerant, obstupefacti, cum magna admiratione, referentes gratias, glorificaverunt Dominum in sancto et praedicabili viro. Caput 12: De Alio Ejus In Mari Simili Periculo ALIO quoque in tempore, saeva nimis insistente et perculosa tempestate, sociis, ut pro eis Sanctus Dominum exoraret, inclamitantibus;
聽見這話,他便停止舀那苦水(hininglas),開始向主傾倒甘甜而懇切的禱告。說來奇妙,就在聖徒站在船頭、向天伸出雙手懇求全能者的那一刻,全空中的風暴和海的狂怒,平息得比言語所能述說的還快,止住了,立時隨之而來的是極其晴朗的平靜。船上的人都驚奇不已,大大稀奇,獻上感謝,在主聖潔可頌的人身上榮耀了主。第十二章:論他在海上另一次類似的危險。又在另一個時候,當極其猛烈而危險的風暴逼來,他的同伴大聲呼喊,求聖徒為他們懇求主時;
Hearing this, he ceased to bail out the bitter water — hininglas — and began to pour out a sweet and earnest prayer to the Lord. Wondrous to tell, at that very moment of the hour in which the Saint, standing on the prow, with hands stretched out to heaven, entreated the Almighty, the whole tempest of the air and the fury of the sea, calmed quicker than it can be told, ceased, and at once a most serene tranquility followed. But those who were in the ship, astonished, with great wonder, giving thanks, glorified the Lord in His holy and praiseworthy man. Chapter 12: Of Another Like Peril of His at Sea. At another time also, when an exceedingly fierce and perilous tempest was pressing in, and his companions were crying aloud that the Saint should entreat the Lord for them;
2:25
Mira dicturus sum. Eadem hora sanctus Cainnichus, in suo conversans monasterio, quod Latine Campulus Bovis dicitur, Scotice vero Ached-bou, Spiritu revelante Sancto, supradictam sancti Columbae interiore cordis aure vocem audierat; et cum forte post nonam coepisset horam in refectorio eulogiam frangere, ocius deserit mensulam, unoque in pede inhaerente calceo, et altero pro nimia festinatione relicto, festinanter pergit hac cum voce ad ecclesiam, Non est nobis nunc temporis prandere quando in mari periclitatur navis sancti Columbae.
he gave them this answer, saying: It is not for me this day to pray for you who are set in this peril, but for Cainnech the abbot, a holy man. I am about to tell wondrous things. At that same hour holy Cainnech, dwelling in his monastery — which in Latin is called Campulus Bovis (the Little Field of the Ox), but in Irish Ached-bou — heard the aforesaid voice of holy Columba with the inner ear of his heart, the Spirit revealing it. And when he had perchance, after the ninth hour, begun to break the blessed bread in the refectory, he straightway left the little table, and with one shoe clinging to one foot and the other left off through too great haste, he hastened to the church with these words: It is no time for us now to dine, when the ship of holy Columba is in peril at sea.
2:26
For at that moment he, repeating this name of Cainnech, was making mention of him, that he might entreat Christ for him and his companions in peril. After these words, entering the oratory, he knelt down and prayed for a little while; and the Lord hearing his prayer, the tempest immediately ceased, and the sea became very calm. Then thereafter holy Columba, seeing in the spirit Cainnech's hastening to the church, though he was dwelling far off, wondrously uttered this word from a pure heart, saying: Now I have known, O Cainnech, that God has heard your prayer; now your swift running to the church with one shoe profits us greatly. In this miracle, therefore, the prayer of both Saints, as we believe, worked together. Chapter 13:
2:27
Of the Staff of Holy Cainnech, Left Behind in the Harbor. At another time, the same Cainnech mentioned above, beginning to sail from the harbor of the island of Iona to Ireland, forgot to carry his staff with him; which staff of his, found on the shore after his departure, was delivered into the hand of holy Columba; and he, having returned home, carried it into the oratory, and there remained alone in prayer for a rather long while. Cainnech accordingly, drawing near to the island of Oidecha, suddenly stung with remorse for his forgetfulness, was inwardly pricked. But after a little, bending down, he found before him, upon the turf of the little ground of Aithche, the staff which he had forgotten in the harbor of the island of Iona and left behind him.
2:28
At its conveyance, divinely effected, he marveled greatly, with thanksgiving to God. Chapter 14: Of Baithene and Columban Son of Beogna, Holy Priests, Asking on the Same Day That a Prosperous Wind Be Granted Them by the Lord Through the Blessed Man's Prayer, Although Sailing by Different Routes. At another time, the holy men mentioned above, coming to the Saint, with one accord asked of him together that he himself, asking of the Lord, might obtain that a prosperous wind be given them on the morrow, as they were about to set out by different routes. To whom the Saint replied, giving this answer: Tomorrow morning, Baithene, sailing out from the harbor of the island of Iona, shall have a favorable wind until he reaches the harbor of Campus Lunge (the Plain of Lunge).
2:29
Quod ita, juxta Sancti verbum, Dominus donavit: nam Baitheneus plenis eadem die velis magnum totumque pelagus usque ad Ethicam transmeavit terram. Hora vero ejusdem diei tertia, vir venerandus Columbanum advocat presbyterum dicens, Nunc Baitheneus prospere optatum pervenit ad portum: ad navigandum te hodie praepara; mox Dominus ventum convertet in aquilonem. Cui sic prolato beati viri verbo eadem hora auster obsecundans ventus se in aquiloneum convertit flatum; et ita in eadem die uterque vir sanctus, alter ab altero in pace aversus, Baitheneus mane ad Ethicam terram, Columbanus post meridiem Hiberniam incipiens appetere, plenis enavigavit velis et flatibus secundis.
And so, according to the Saint's word, the Lord granted it: for Baithene, with full sails, on that same day crossed the great and entire sea even to the land of Ethica. But at the third hour of the same day, the venerable man called Columban the priest, saying: Now Baithene has reached the desired harbor prosperously; prepare yourself to sail today; soon the Lord will turn the wind to the north. At this word of the blessed man thus uttered, at that same hour the favorable south wind turned itself into a northerly blast; and so on that same day both holy men, the one parted from the other in peace, Baithene in the morning to the land of Ethica, Columban in the afternoon beginning to make for Ireland, sailed out with full sails and favorable winds.
2:30
Caput 15: De Repulsione Daemonis Qui In Lactario Latitabat Vasculo ALIO in tempore, quidam juvenis, Columbanus, nomine, Nepos Briuni, ad januam tugurioli subito perveniens restitit, in quo vir beatus scribebat.
This miracle was wrought by the virtue of the illustrious man's prayers, the Lord granting it; because, as it is written, All things are possible to him that believeth. After holy Columban's departure on that day, holy Columba uttered this prophetic word about him: The holy man Columban, whom we blessed as he set out, shall nowhere in this world see my face. And so it was fulfilled afterwards, for in that same year holy Columba passed over to the Lord. Chapter 15: Of the Repelling of the Demon That Lurked in a Milk-Pail. At another time, a certain young man, Columban by name, grandson of Briun, suddenly arriving at the door of the little hut in which the blessed man was writing, stood still.
2:31
This same man, returning after the milking of the cows, carrying on his back a pail full of new milk, said to the Saint that, according to custom, he might bless such a load. The Saint then, from opposite at a distance, with his raised hand traced in the air the sign of salvation; whereupon that load was straightway violently shaken, and the peg of the lid, thrust back through its two holes, was cast far off, the lid fell to the ground, and the milk in its greater part was spilled upon the earth. The young man set the pail, with the little milk that remained, upon its bottom on the ground, and suppliantly bent his knees.
2:32
Ad quem Sanctus, Surge, ait, Columbane, hodie in tua operatione negligenter egisti, daemonem enim in fundo vacui latitantem vasculi, impresso Dominicae crucis signo, ante infusionem lactis, non effugasti: cujus videlicet signi nunc virtutem non sustinens, tremefactus, toto pariter turbato vase, velociter cum lactis effusione aufugit. Huc ergo ad me proprius vasculum, ut illud benedicam, approxima. Quo facto, Sanctus semivacuum quod benedixerat vas, eodem momento divinitus repletum repertum est; parvumque quod prius in fundo vasis remanserat, sub sanctae manus benedictione, usque ad summam citius excreverat. Caput 16:
To him the Saint said: Rise, Columban; today you have acted negligently in your work, for you did not, by impressing the sign of the Lord's cross before the pouring of the milk, drive out the demon lurking in the bottom of the empty pail: which demon, namely, now not enduring the power of that sign, trembling, fled away swiftly with the spilling of the milk, the whole vessel being likewise disturbed. Bring therefore the pail nearer here to me, that I may bless it. When this was done, the half-empty vessel which the Saint had blessed was at that same moment found divinely refilled; and the little that had before remained at the bottom of the vessel, under the blessing of the holy hand, had quickly grown up even to the brim. Chapter 16:
2:33
De Vasculo Quod Quidam Maleficus Nomine Silnanus Lacte De Masculo Bove Expresso Repleverat HOC in domo alicujus plebeii divitis, qui in monte Cainle commorabatur, Foirtgirni nomine, factum traditur. Ubi cum Sanctus hospitaretur, inter rusticanos contendentes duos, quorum prius adventum praescivit, recta judicatione judicavit: unusque ex eis, qui maleficus erat, a Sancto jussus, de bove masculo, qui prope erat, lac arte diabolica expressit: quod Sanctus, non ut illa confirmaret maleficia, fieri jussit, quod absit; sed ut ea coram multitudine destrueret. Vir itaque beatus vas, ut videbatur tali plenum lacte, sibi ocius dari poposcit;
論某個名叫西爾南的術士用從公牛擠出的奶所裝滿的桶。據傳這事發生在一個住在凱因勒山上、名叫弗爾特吉恩的富裕平民家中。當聖徒寄宿在那裡時,在兩個爭吵的鄉下人之間——他預先就知道他們要來——他作了公正的判斷:其中一人是術士,聖徒吩咐他用魔鬼的法術從就近的一頭公牛擠出奶來:聖徒吩咐這樣作,並非為要證實那些邪術——斷乎不是!——乃是為要在眾人面前拆毀它們。於是這位有福之人吩咐快把那看似裝滿這種奶的桶拿給他;
Of the Pail Which a Certain Sorcerer Named Silnan Had Filled with Milk Pressed from a Male Ox. This is related to have happened in the house of a certain wealthy commoner named Foirtgirn, who dwelt on Mount Cainle. When the Saint was lodging there, between two quarreling country-folk — whose coming he had foreknown beforehand — he gave righteous judgment: and one of them, who was a sorcerer, was bidden by the Saint to press milk by diabolical art from a male ox that was nearby: which the Saint bade be done, not to confirm those sorceries — far be it! — but to destroy them before the multitude. The blessed man therefore demanded that the vessel, seemingly full of such milk, be given to him quickly;
2:34
and with this judgment he blessed it, saying: Now it shall be proven that this is not true milk, as is supposed, but blood discolored by the fraud of demons, to deceive men: and immediately that milky color was turned back into its proper nature, that is, into blood. The ox too, which in the space of one hour had become wasted and emaciated with foul leanness and was near to death, when sprinkled with water blessed by the Saint, was healed with marvelous swiftness. Chapter 17: Of Lugne Mocumin. On a certain day a young man of good disposition, Lugne by name, who afterwards as an old man was prior in the monastery of the island of Elena, coming to the Saint, complained of a flow of blood, which frequently for many months flowed immoderately from his nostrils.
2:35
Quo propius accito, Sanctus ambas ipsius nares binis manus dexterae digitulis constringens benedixit. Qui, verbo Sancti obtemperantes, mirae magnitudinis traxerunt in retiaculo esocem a Deo sibi praeparatum.
Having called him nearer, the Saint, pressing both his nostrils with two little fingers of his right hand, blessed him. From that hour of the blessing, blood never again dripped from his nose until his last day. Chapter 18: Of the Fishes Specially Prepared for the Blessed Man by God. At another time, when the companions of the praiseworthy man, sturdy fishermen, had caught five fishes in the net in the fish-rich river Sale, the Saint said to them again: Cast the net into the river, and you shall straightway find a great fish which the Lord has prepared for me. They, obeying the word of the Saint, drew up in the little net a salmon of wondrous size, prepared for them by God.
2:36
Caput 20:
Chapter 19. At another time also, when the Saint was tarrying for some days beside the Lake of Cei, he held back his companions who wished to go fishing, saying: Today and tomorrow no fish will be found in the river: on the third day I will send you, and you shall find two great river-salmon caught in the net. And so, after two short days, casting the net, finding two of most rare size in the river called Bo, they drew them to land. In these two fishings mentioned, the power of the miracle appears, accompanied at the same time by prophetic foreknowledge, for which the Saint and his companions rendered exceeding thanks to God. Chapter 20:
2:37
De Nesano Curbo Qui In Ea Regione Conversabatur Quae Stagno Aporum Est Contermina HIC Nesanus, cum esset valde inops, sanctum alio tempore gaudenter hospitio recepit virum. Cui cum hospitaliter secundum vires, unius noctis spatio ministrasset, Sanctus ab eo inquirit, cujus boculas numeri haberet: ille ait, Quinque. Sanctus consequenter, Ad me, ait, adduc, ut eas benedicam. Quibus adductis, et elevata manu sancta benedictis, Ab hac die tuae pauculae quinque vacculae crescent, ait Sanctus, usque ad centum et quinque vaccarum numerum.
Of Nesan the Crooked, Who Dwelt in That Region Which Borders on the Lake of the Aporis. This Nesan, when he was exceedingly poor, joyfully received the holy man into his hospitality at another time. When he had ministered to him hospitably according to his means for the space of one night, the Saint inquired of him how many little cows he had: he said, Five. The Saint accordingly said: Bring them to me, that I may bless them. When they were brought and blessed with his raised holy hand, From this day, said the Saint, your few five little cows shall increase, up to the number of a hundred and five cows.
2:38
Et quia idem Nesanus homo plebeius erat, cum uxore et filiis, hoc etiam ei vir beatus benedictionis augmentum intulit, dicens, Erit semen tuum in filiis et nepotibus benedictum. Quae omnia plene, juxta verbum Sancti, sine ulla expleta sunt imminutione. Caput 21 DE quodam viro divite tenacissimo, nomine Uigenio, qui sanctum Columbam despexerat nec eum hospitio recepit, hanc e contrario protulit prophetalem sententiam, inquiens, Illius autem avari divitiae, qui Christum in peregrinis hospitibus sprevit, ab hac die paulatim imminuentur, et ad nihilum redigentur; et ipse mendicabit; et filius ejus cum semivacua de domo in domum perul discuret;
因為這內桑是個平凡人,有妻子兒女,這有福之人便也賜給他這加增的祝福說:你的後裔在子孫中必蒙福。這一切都照著聖徒的話完全應驗了,毫無減少。第二十一章。論某個極其吝嗇、名叫烏伊根的富人,他曾藐視聖哥倫巴,不肯接待他到家中寄宿,聖徒便相反地說出這預言的話:但那吝嗇之人——就是在客旅寄居者身上輕慢基督的——他的財富從今日起必漸漸減少,歸於烏有;他自己必行乞;他的兒子必拿著半空的袋子挨家逐戶地奔走討飯;
And because this same Nesan was a common man, with a wife and sons, the blessed man bestowed on him also this increase of blessing, saying: Your seed shall be blessed in sons and grandsons. All which things were fully fulfilled, according to the Saint's word, without any diminution. Chapter 21. Concerning a certain very stingy rich man named Uigen, who had despised holy Columba and did not receive him into his hospitality, he uttered on the contrary this prophetic sentence, saying: But the riches of that miser, who spurned Christ in his pilgrim guests, shall from this day be little by little diminished, and shall be reduced to nothing; and he himself shall beg; and his son shall run about from house to house with a half-empty bag;
2:39
and, struck by some rival of his with an axe in the little pit of a threshing-floor, he shall die. All which things concerning both of them, according to the prophecy of the holy man, were fully fulfilled. Chapter 22: Of Columban, Likewise a Common Man, Whose Very Few Cattle the Holy Man Blessed; But After His Blessing They Increased to the Number of a Hundred. At another time also, the blessed man on a certain night, when he was being well lodged with the aforementioned Columban, then at that time poor, early in the morning the Saint, just as was related above concerning Nesan, asked the common host about the quantity and quality of his substance. He, being asked, said: I have only five little cows; which, if you bless them, will increase the more.
2:40
He straightway, bidden by the Saint, brought them; and in like manner, as was said above concerning Nesan's five little cows, the Saint, blessing this Columban's five little cattle equally, said: By God's gift you shall have a hundred and five cows, and there shall be a flourishing blessing in your sons and grandsons. All which things, according to the prophecy of the blessed man, were most fully accomplished in his fields and cattle and offspring; and in a marvelous manner the number foreordained by the Saint for both the men aforesaid, fulfilled in the hundred and five of the cows, could in no way be exceeded:
2:41
Caput 23: De Malefactorum Interitu Qui Sanctum Dispexerant VIR venerandus supra memoratum Columbanum, quem de paupere virtus benedictionis ejus ditem fecit, valde diligebat; quia ei multa pietatis officia praebebat.
for those cattle which exceeded above the foreordained number, snatched away by various mishaps, nowhere appeared, except for that which could be expended either for the proper uses of the household, or also for the work of almsgiving. In this narrative, therefore, as in the others, the miracle of power and prophecy together are openly shown: for in the great increase of the cows the power both of the blessing and of the prayer appears, and in the foreordaining of the number, prophetic foreknowledge. Chapter 23: Of the Destruction of the Evildoers Who Had Despised the Saint. The venerable man greatly loved the aforementioned Columban, whom the power of his blessing had made rich from poor; because he rendered him many offices of piety.
2:42
Erat autem illo in tempore quidam malefactor homo, bonorum persecutor, nomine Joan, filius Conallis filii Domnallis, de regio Gabrani ortus genere. Hic supradictum Columbanum, sancti amicum Columbae, persequebatur; domumque ejus, omnibus in ea inventis, devastaverat, ereptis, non semel, sed bis inimiciter agens. Unde forte non immerito eidem maligno accidit viro, ut tertia vice post ejusdem domus tertiam depraedationem, beatum virum, quem quasi longius positum dispexerat, proprius appropinquantem, ad navem revertens praeda onustus cum sociis, obvium haberet.
Now there was at that time a certain evildoer, a persecutor of the good, named Joan, son of Conall son of Domnall, sprung from the royal stock of Gabran. This man persecuted the aforesaid Columban, the friend of holy Columba; and had laid waste his house, with all that was found in it, plundering it — not once but twice — acting in hostile fashion. Whence it perhaps befell, not undeservedly, that same wicked man, that on the third occasion, after the third pillaging of that house, returning to his ship laden with booty with his companions, he met the blessed man face to face, approaching nearer — the man whom he had despised as though set far off.
2:43
When the Saint rebuked him for his evils, and asking, urged him to lay down the plunder, he, remaining harsh and unpersuadable, despised the Saint, and boarding the ship with the booty, mocked and derided the blessed man. The Saint followed him as far as the sea, and entering the glassy sea-waters up to his knees, with both hands raised to heaven, earnestly prayed to Christ, who glorifies His elect that glorify Him. Now that harbor, in which after the departure of the persecutor he stood entreating the Lord for a little while, is in the place which in Irish is called Ait-Chambas Art-muirchol. Then thereupon the Saint, his prayer being finished, returned to dry land, and sat with his companions in a more elevated place:
2:44
to whom in that hour he uttered very dreadful words, saying: This wretched little man, who has despised Christ in His servants, shall never return to the harbor from which he just now departed before your eyes; nor shall he reach the other lands which he seeks, but, forestalled by sudden death, shall perish with his evil accomplices. Today — as soon you shall see — a fierce squall sent forth from a cloud risen from the north shall drown him with his companions; nor shall even one of them remain to tell the tale. After the intervention of a few short delays, on a most serene day, behold, as the Saint had said, a cloud risen from the sea, sent forth with a great roar of wind, finding the plunderer with his booty between the islands of Mull and Coll, suddenly, the sea being troubled, sank him in mid-sea:
2:45
nor, according to the Saint's word, did even one of those who were in the ship escape; and in a marvelous manner, while all the sea around remained calm, one such squall struck down those rapacious men, sunk to the nether regions — pitiably indeed, but deservedly. Chapter 24: Of a Certain Feradach Carried Off by Sudden Death. At another time also, the holy man carefully assigned and commended a certain exile of the noble stock of the Picts, Tarain by name, into the hand of a certain rich man, Feradach, who dwelt in the island of Islay, that he might live in his company, as one of his friends, for some months. When he had received the man, commended with such commendation from the hand of the holy man, after a few days, acting treacherously, by a cruel command he had him slaughtered.
2:46
Quod immane scelus cum Sancto a commeantibus esset nunciatum, sic respondens profatus est, Non mihi sed Deo ille infelix homunculus mentitus est, cujus nomen de libro vitae delebitur. Haec verba aesteo nunc mediante proloquimur tempore, sed autumnali, antequam de suilla degustet carne, arboreo saginata fructu, subita praeventus morte, ad infernalia rapietur loca. Haec sancti prophetia viri, cum misello nuntiaret homuncioni, despiciens irrisit Sanctum: et post dies aliquot autumnalium mensium, eo jubente, scrofa nucum impinguata nucleis jugulatur, necdum aliis ejusdem viri jugulatis suibus;
當這滔天的罪行被路人報告給聖徒時,他如此回答說:那不幸的小子不是向我說謊,乃是向神說謊,他的名必從生命冊上被塗抹。我們如今在仲夏時節說這些話,但在秋天,他還沒嚐到那以樹上果實餵肥的豬肉之前,必被猝死所臨,被奪到地獄的境地。這聖人的預言,當那可憐的小子向他人傳述時,他卻藐視譏笑聖徒:過了秋月的幾天,照他的吩咐,宰了一頭以堅果仁餵肥的母豬,而那人別的豬還沒有宰;
When this monstrous crime was reported to the Saint by travelers, he spoke thus in reply: Not to me but to God has that unhappy little man lied, whose name shall be blotted out of the book of life. These words we now speak in mid-summer time, but in autumn, before he tastes of swine's flesh fattened on the fruit of trees, forestalled by sudden death, he shall be snatched away to the regions of hell. This prophecy of the holy man, when the wretched little fellow announced it, he despising mocked the Saint: and after some days of the autumn months, by his command, a sow fattened on the kernels of nuts was slaughtered, while none other of that man's swine had yet been slaughtered;
2:47
of which, quickly disemboweled, he ordered a portion to be roasted for himself in greater haste on a spit, that the impatient man, tasting of it beforehand, might destroy the blessed man's prophecy. When it was roasted, he demanded that some little morsel be given him to taste beforehand; and before he could turn to his mouth the hand stretched out to take it, breathing his last, he fell dead backward upon his back. And those who had seen, and those who had heard, greatly trembling, marveling, honoring Christ in the holy prophet, glorified Him. Chapter 25:
2:48
Of Another Wicked Man, a Persecutor of the Church, Whose Name in Latin Means 'Right Hand.' At another time, the blessed man, dwelling in the island of Hinba, had begun to excommunicate certain other persecutors of the churches, namely the sons of Conall son of Domnall, of whom one was Joan, of whom we related above; whereupon one of their fellow evildoers, at the devil's instigation, rushed in with a spear, to slay the Saint. Guarding against this, one of the brothers, Findlugan by name, ready to die for the holy man, clothed in his cowl, interposed himself.
2:49
But in a marvelous manner the blessed man's garment of this kind, like a most well-fortified and impenetrable breastplate, although by the strong thrust of a sharp spear of a strong man, could not be pierced, but remained unharmed; and he who was clothed in it, untouched and unhurt, was protected by such a defense. But that wicked man, who was 'Right Hand,' stepped back, supposing that he had pierced the holy man with the spear. After a full year was completed from that day, when the Saint was dwelling in the island of Iona, he said: Up to this day a full year is completed, from the day on which Lam-dess, as far as he was able, slaughtered Findlugan in my stead; but he too, as I reckon, is at this very hour being slaughtered.
2:50
Quod juxta Sancti revelationem eodem momento in illa insula factum est, quae Latine Longa vocitari potest: ubi ipse solus Lam-dess, in aliqua virorum utrinque acta belligeratione, Cronani filii Baithani jaculo transfixus, in nomine, ut fertur, sancti Columbae emisso, interierat; et post ejus interitum, blligerare viri cessarunt. Caput 26: De Alio Itidem Innocentium Persecutore CUM vir beatus, adhuc juvenis diaconus, in parte Lagensium, divinam addiscens sapientiam, conversaretur, quadam accidit die ut homo quidam innocuorum immitis persecutor crudelis, quandam in campi planitie filiolam fugientem persequeretur.
This, according to the Saint's revelation, came to pass at that same moment in that island which in Latin may be called Longa: where Lam-dess alone, in some warfare waged by men on both sides, transfixed by the javelin of Cronan son of Baithan — cast, as is reported, in the name of holy Columba — had perished; and after his death the warring men ceased to fight. Chapter 26: Of Another Persecutor Likewise of the Innocent. When the blessed man, still a young deacon, was dwelling in the region of the Leinstermen, learning divine wisdom, it happened one day that a certain harsh and cruel persecutor of the innocent was pursuing a little girl who was fleeing across the level of a plain.
2:51
When she chanced to see old Gemman, the master of the aforementioned young deacon, reading in the field, she fled to him with a straight course, with all the speed she could. He, disturbed by such a sudden event, called Columba, who was reading at a distance, that both of them, as far as they were able, might defend the girl from her pursuer. He, immediately coming up, with no reverence shown them by him, slew the girl with his lance beneath their garments; and leaving her lying dead upon their feet, turned away and began to depart. Then the old man, greatly grieved, turning to Columba, said: How long, holy boy Columba, will God the just Judge suffer this crime, together with the dishonor of our time-span, to go unavenged?
2:52
The Saint accordingly uttered this sentence against that very wicked man, saying: In the same hour in which the soul of the girl slain by him ascends to the heavens, let the soul of her slayer himself descend to the depths below. And quicker than the word was spoken, with the word, just as Ananias before Peter, so also that slayer of the innocent, before the eyes of the holy youth, fell dead in that same little plot of ground. The report of this sudden and dreadful vengeance was immediately spread abroad through many provinces of Ireland, together with the wondrous fame of the holy deacon. Let it suffice to have spoken thus far of the terrifying retributions upon adversaries: now we shall relate a few things about beasts. Chapter 27:
2:53
De Apro Per Ejus Orationem Interempto ALIO in tempore, vir beatus, cum in Scia insula aliquantis demoraretur diebus, paulo longius solus, orationis intuitu, separatus a fratribus, silvam ingressus densm, mirae magnitudinis aprum, quem forte venatici canes persequebantur, obviam habuit. Quo viso eminus, Sanctus aspiciens eum restitit. Tum deinde, invocato Dei nomine, sancta elevata manu, cum intenta dicit ad eum oratione, Ulterius huc procedere noles: in loco ad quem nunc devenisti morere. Quo Sancti in silvis personante verbo, non solum ultra accedere non valuit, sed ante faciem ipsius terribilis ferus, verbi ejus virtute mortificatus, cito corruit. Caput 28:
Of the Boar Slain Through His Prayer. At another time, the blessed man, when he was tarrying for some days in the island of Skye, having gone a little further off alone, separated from the brothers for the sake of prayer, entered a dense wood and met face to face a wild boar of wondrous size, which by chance hunting dogs were pursuing. Seeing it from afar, the Saint, gazing at it, stood still. Then thereafter, having invoked the name of God, with his holy hand raised, with earnest prayer he said to it: You shall wish to proceed no further hither: in the place to which you have now come, die. At this word of the Saint resounding in the woods, not only was it unable to advance further, but before his face the terrible wild beast, slain by the power of his word, swiftly fell down. Chapter 28:
2:54
De Cujusdam Aquatilis Bestiae Virtute Orationis Beati Viri Repulsione ALIO quoque in tempore, cum vir beatus in Pictorum provincia per aliquot moraretur dies, necesse habuit fluvium transire Nesam: ad cujus cum accessisset ripam, alios ex accolis aspicit misellum humantes homunculum; quem, ut ipsi sepultores ferebant, quaedam paulo ante nantem aquatilis praeripiens bestia morsu momordit saevissimo: cujus miserum cadaver, sero licet, quidam in alno subvenientes porrectis praeripuere uncinis. Vir e contra beatus, haec audiens, praecipit ut aliquis ex comitibus enatans, caupallum, in altera stantem ripa, ad se navigando reducat.
Of the Repelling of a Certain Water Beast by the Power of the Blessed Man's Prayer. At another time also, when the blessed man was tarrying for some days in the province of the Picts, he had need to cross the river Ness: and when he had come to its bank, he saw some of the inhabitants burying a wretched little man; whom, as the buriers themselves reported, a water beast had a little while before seized as he was swimming and bitten with a most savage bite: whose miserable corpse some men coming to his aid in a boat, though too late, had snatched up with outstretched hooks. The blessed man, on the contrary, hearing this, commanded that one of the companions, swimming across, bring back to him by sailing the cot (small boat) that stood on the other bank.
2:55
Quo sancti audito praedicabilis viri praecepto, Lugneus Mocumin, nihil moratus, obsecundans, depositis excepta vestimentis tunica, immittit se in aquas.
At this command of the holy and praiseworthy man having been heard, Lugne Mocumin, delaying not at all, in obedience, having laid aside his garments except his tunic, cast himself into the waters. But the monster, which before was not so much satiated as inflamed for prey, lay lurking in the depth of the river, and perceiving the water troubled above by him as he swam, suddenly rising up, swimming toward the man swimming in the middle of the channel, with a huge roar, rushed with open mouth. The blessed man then, seeing it, while all who were present, both the barbarians and also the brothers, were stricken with exceeding terror, with his holy hand raised, having traced in the empty air the saving sign of the cross, having invoked the name of God, commanded the fierce beast, saying: You shall not advance further, nor touch the man; turn back swiftly.
2:56
Then indeed the beast, having heard this voice of the Saint, fled backward, as if dragged by ropes, with swifter retreat, trembling: it which before had approached Lugne swimming so close that there was no more than the length of a single pole between the man and the beast. The brothers then, seeing the beast had withdrawn, and their fellow-soldier Lugne returned to them in the little boat untouched and unhurt, with exceeding wonder glorified God in the blessed man. But also the heathen barbarians who were present at that time, compelled by the magnitude of that same miracle, which they themselves had seen, magnified the God of the Christians. Chapter 29:
2:57
De Benedicta A Sancto Hujus Insulae Terrula Ne Deinceps In Ea Viperarum Alicui Nocerent Venena QUADAM die ejusdem aestei temporis quo ad Dominum transiit, ad visitandos fratres Sanctus plaustro vectus pergit, qui in campulo ocidentali Iouae insulae opus materiale exercebant. Post quorum consolatoria a Sancto prolata alloquia, in eminentiore stans loco, sic vaticinatur dicens, Ex hac, filioli, die, scio quod in hujus campuli locis nunquam poteritis in futurum videre faciem meam.
Of the Little Soil of This Island Blessed by the Saint, That Henceforth the Venom of Vipers Should Harm No One in It. On a certain day of that same summer-time in which he passed over to the Lord, the Saint, conveyed in a wagon, went to visit the brothers who were doing manual work in the western little plain of the island of Iona. After the consoling words spoken to them by the Saint, standing in a more elevated place, he thus prophesied, saying: From this day, little sons, I know that in the places of this little plain you shall never in the future be able to see my face.
2:58
Quos, hoc audito verbo, valde tristificatos videns, consolari eos in quantum fieri possit conatus, ambas manus elevat sanctas, et totam hanc nostram benedicens insulam, ait, Ex hoc hujus horulae momento omnium viperarum venena nullo modo, in hujus insulae terrulis, aut hominibus aut pecoribus nocere poterunt, quamdiu Christi mandata ejusdem commorationis incolae observaverint. Caput 30: De Pugione A Sancto Cum Dominicae Crucis Signaculo Benedicta ALIO in tempore, quidam frater nomine Molua, Nepos Briuni, ad Sanctum eadem scribentem hora veniens, dicit ad eum, Hoc quod in manu habeo ferrum, quaeso benedicas.
Seeing them greatly saddened at hearing this word, and striving to console them as far as could be done, he lifted up both his holy hands, and blessing this whole island of ours, he said, 'From this very moment of this present hour the venom of all vipers shall in no way be able to harm either men or cattle in the soil of this island, so long as the inhabitants of this same dwelling-place keep the commandments of Christ.' Chapter 30: Concerning a Dagger Blessed by the Saint with the Sign of the Lord's Cross. At another time a certain brother named Molua, grandson of Briun, coming to the Saint while he was writing at that very hour, said to him, 'This iron blade which I have in my hand, I beg you to bless.'
2:59
He, slightly stretching out his holy hand with the pen and making the sign, blessed it, his face turned toward the book on which he was writing. When the aforesaid brother had withdrawn with the blessed blade, the Saint inquired, saying, 'What iron did I bless for the brother?' Diormit, his devoted attendant, said, 'You blessed a dagger for slaughtering bulls or oxen.' But he, answering on the contrary, declared, 'The iron which I blessed, I trust in my Lord, will harm neither man nor beast.' That word of the Saint was proved most firm at that very hour. For the same brother, having gone out beyond the rampart of the monastery, wishing to slaughter an ox, tried three firm times with strong thrusts, yet could not even pierce its hide.
2:60
Quod monachi scientes experti, ejusdem pugionis ferrum, ignis resolutum calore, per omnia monasterii ferramenta liquefactum diviserunt illinitum; nec postea ullam potuere carnem vulnerare, illius Sancti manente benedictionis fortitudine.
When the monks, knowing this by experience, melted down the iron of that same dagger by the heat of fire and spread it as a coating over all the iron tools of the monastery, those tools could thereafter wound no flesh, the power of that Saint's blessing remaining upon them.
