At cum alii collectio.
Lastly (a point most pertinent to vindicating several matters that might be objected, which we have proposed to be considered in the general preface), another account must be taken of the sermons which were collected and published by the authors themselves, and another of those which others, after the authors' death, gathered from their papers and made public. When authors published their own works, they published only what was elaborated, polished, and perfected, in which accordingly nothing is wont to be read as repeated, nothing disjointed, nothing mutilated, as may be seen in the tractates of Saint Gaudentius, which he himself delivered to Benivolus in the same century as our Author. But when others made a collection,
1:412
then, on account of the merit and esteem of the authors which prevailed among the collectors, there could be gathered from the papers all whatsoever they had found, even repeated, mutilated, and rough pieces, which the authors, had they been present, would have thought should be rejected or perfected. So great, moreover, seems to have been Zeno's fame, and the deference shown him by all, that the collector made it a matter of conscience to cast aside nothing that he had found among his papers; and hence he judged that several tractates, though repeated, mutilated, and least of all perfected, should be inserted into the collection.
1:413
Now, that we may say something concerning the order of these tractates which pertain to the paschal offices: there will be placed in the first place the Invitations to the font, together with two tractates on Psalm XLI, which, since they coincide with the same, will be inscribed with the same title; afterward seven tractates to the neophytes after baptism; then nine tractates on the Day of the Pasch; finally fifteen tractates on Exodus, and nine on Daniel at the Pasch, all of which excellently represent the image of the paschal feast or of baptism from the readings of Exodus or of Daniel recited with solemn rite amid the sacred offices.
1:414
TRACTATUS XXX. (1) Invitatio ad fontem I. Exsultate, fratres, in Christo, omnique desiderio convolantes, coelestia dona percipite. Jam vos sem piterni fontis calor salutaris invilat. Jam mater nos tra (2) adoptat, ut pariat :
In editing these tractates or addresses, since the titles of the manuscripts are not constant even in those tractates which present almost the same words, not to say the same sentences, we have not always followed them, and the inscriptions of the editions seemed to agree better, as will become plain from the annotations upon these same titles. TRACTATE XXX. Invitation to the font I. Exult, brethren, in Christ, and with all longing flying together, receive the heavenly gifts. Already the saving warmth of the everlasting font invites you. Already our mother adopts you, that she may give birth:
1:415
but not by that law by which your own mothers bore you, who, themselves groaning with the pain of childbirth, brought you forth into this world weeping, filthy, bound with filthy swaddling-clothes, surrendered as captives to the world; but rejoicing with gladness, heavenly, free, loosed from all sin, and happily reared not in fetid cradles but at the sweetly fragrant rails of the sacred altar: through our Lord Jesus Christ. TRACTATE XXXI. Invitation to the font II. Now, now, quicker than the word is spoken, enter the heavenly gates, brethren; and laying yourselves in the life-giving bed of the eternal flood, do not suppose that grace works any partiality with respect to persons. By your own judgment are you born, knowing that he who shall have believed the more will render himself the nobler.
1:416
Constanter igitur ac fideliter hominem istum vestrum veterem fœterosis (4) suis cumpannis abjicite, novelli omnes, omnes (5), candidati, omnes Spiritus sancti munere mox divitis processuri. 243 TRACTATUS XXXU.
Constantly therefore and faithfully cast off that old man of yours with his fetid rags, all of you new, all of you white-robed candidates, all soon to advance, rich with the gift of the Holy Spirit. TRACTATE XXXII. Invitation to the font III. Come now, why do you stand, brethren, whom the life-giving wave conceived through your faith and now through the sacraments brings to birth? Hasten as quickly as possible to the things desired. Behold, already the solemn hymn is being sung; behold, the voice of infants and their sweet wailing is heard; behold, from the womb of the one giving birth there comes forth a most glorious throng. It is a new thing, that by spiritual right each one should be born. Run beyond, run to the mother, who then does not labor if she cannot number those whom she brings forth.
1:417
Intrate ergo, intrate felices, omnes simul subito futuri (7) lactantes. TRACTATUS XXXIII. (I) Invitatio ad fontem IV. Quid statis (2) genere. ætate, sexu, conditione di versi, mox unum futuri ?
Enter therefore, enter, you blessed ones, all together suddenly about to become suckling babes. TRACTATE XXXIII. Invitation to the font IV. Why do you stand, you who are diverse in race, age, sex, and condition, but soon to be one? Fly to the sweet ever-virgin womb of the mother of the font; and there, in your nobility, in your faith, knowing that as much as each one shall have believed, so much of blessedness shall he also possess. O admirable and truly divine, holy condescension! in which she who gives birth does not groan; he who is reborn knows not how to weep. This is the renewal, this the resurrection, this eternal life, this is the mother of all, who, having made us joined into one, gathered out of every people and nation, afterward forms us into one body. TRACTATE XXXIV. Invitation to the font V.
1:418
Exsultate, fratres, quos sua parturit fides. qui mundi hujus fugientesinsidias,reatum, vulnera, ac mortem, paternæ implorastis auxilium majes tatis, omnique non pedum velocitate, sed mentis pii fon is ad gurgitem convolate Vos constanter (2) immergite, salvo salutis statu, (3) veteris hominis vestri felici morte victuri. 246 TRACTATUS XXXV. (1) Invitatio ad fontem VI. Properate, properate bene (2) loturi fratres.
Exult, brethren, whom your own faith brings to birth, who, fleeing the snares, the guilt, the wounds, and the death of this world, implored the help of the Father's majesty, and now fly to the flood of the holy font, not with swiftness of feet, but of a devout mind. Immerse yourselves steadfastly, with your state of salvation kept safe, about to live by the happy death of your old man. TRACTATE XXXV. Invitation to the font VI. Make haste, make haste, brethren who are about to be well washed. The living water, tempered by the Holy Spirit and by sweetest fire, with gentle murmur already invites you. Already the bath awaits, girded to furnish what is needful for anointing, what for drying, and also the golden denarius marked with the unity of a triple coinage. Rejoice therefore.
1:419
TRACTATUS XXXVI. (1) Invitatio ad fontem VII. Eia, fratres, quos beatæ sitis exoptatlus ardor incen dit, quos nectarei fluenti dulce murmur invitat, lacteum genitalis fontis ad laticem convolate (2) in cunctanter, ac fortiter bibite, dum licet, superfluen tis amnis undæ subjecti, toto impetu, totaque devo tione 249 vestra vasa replete, utsemper vobis :Iqua sufficiat, hoc ante omnia scientes, quiabanc nec ef fundere licet, nec (3) rursus haurire. TRACTATUS XXXVII. (1) Invitatio ad fontem VIII.
Into the font indeed you will be plunged naked, but clothed with an ethereal garment, anon you will rise thence as white-robed candidates; and whoever shall not have defiled it will possess the heavenly kingdoms: through the Lord Jesus Christ. TRACTATE XXXVI. Invitation to the font VII. Come now, brethren, whom the ardor of a blessed thirst, longed for, sets afire, whom the sweet murmur of the nectar-flowing stream invites, fly without delay to the milky water of the life-giving font, and drink mightily, while it is permitted, plunged beneath the wave of the overflowing river; with all your might and all your devotion fill your vessels, that water may always suffice for you, knowing this above all, that this water may neither be poured out nor again drawn up. TRACTATE XXXVII. Invitation to the font VIII.
1:420
In qua perpaucis additis , quibusdam mutatis, continentur ea quæ in antecedenti. (3) 250 TRACTATUS XXXVIII. (1) Ad Neophylos post baptisma I. Post devotissimacompleta expiationis sacræ casta (2) jejunia,post (5) clarissimae noctis suo sole dulces vigilias, post lactei fontis lavacro vita!!
In which, with very few things added and certain things changed, is contained that which was in the preceding one. Come now, brethren, whom the longed-for ardor of a blessed thirst sets afire, with the desire and swiftness of a deer fly to the milky water of the life-giving font. Drink mightily, that water may always suffice for you, knowing this principally, that it is not permitted either to pour this water out or again to draw it up. TRACTATE XXXVIII. To the neophytes after baptism I. After the chaste fasts of the most devout consummated sacred expiation, after the sweet vigils of the most splendid night with its own sun, after the laver of the milky font giving life

in spem im mortalitatis animas pullutantes, ex quo qui eratis æta te diversi, diversi (4) natione, subito germani fra tres, subito unigeniti emersistis (5) infantes, hortor vos nativitatis tantæ festa 251 (6) læto eelebrare convivio : sed non illo, in quo diversis epulis (7) intri mentorum lenocinio saporis de suMma certantibus, obrutum pectus (8) sæpe crudis atque acidis vomi tibus inurgetur; in quo musti vestri dulcedo sæcu laris, vini pridiani exhalante fœtore, corrumpitur : sed coelesti prandio, honesto, poro, salubri, atque perpetuo ;quod, utsaturi semper ac felices esse possitis, esurienter accipite.
and making your souls sprout into the hope of immortality, by which you who were diverse in age, diverse in nation, suddenly emerged as true brothers, suddenly as only-begotten infants: I exhort you to celebrate the festival of so great a birth with a joyful banquet; yet not with that one in which, amid diverse dishes contending for the highest place by the seductions of seasoned relishes, the overwhelmed breast is often assailed by raw and acid vomits; in which the worldly sweetness of your new wine is corrupted by the exhaled stench of the previous day's wine; but with a heavenly meal, honest, pure, wholesome, and everlasting; which, that you may be able to be always filled and happy, receive with hunger.
1:422
The Householder bestows on you bread and precious wine from His own provisions, from His own table. The three unanimous youths bring in the vegetables first, upon which, that the flavor may be well known, they sprinkle the salt of wisdom; Christ pours in the oil; Moses, ever swift, procured the firstling and tender lamb; Abraham faithfully the fat and seasoned veal. Isaac innocently carries the oil and the wood. Jacob patiently presents various flocks. Joseph, set in advance over the measure, allots provision to all. Indeed, if anyone should desire anything, Noah, who stored it up, the keeper of the ark, will not deny him anything. Peter the fisherman sets out fresh sea-fish in abundance, with a marvelous salt-fish.
1:423
Tobias peregrinus fluvialis piscis (13) interaneadiligenter accurat et :,sat. Joannes' (14) camelariusdevote præcurrens, de sita met attulitet locustas. Ne alter alterum manducantem (15) denotet, invitator admonet Paulus (Rom. XIV, 3). David regiis pastoromnibus momentis lac ar genteum subministrat, et caseum. 旅人多比雅仔細料理那河魚的內臟,這便足夠了。那身披駝毛的約翰,虔誠地奔在前頭,也從自己的所在帶來了蝗蟲。那邀請者保羅勸誡說,吃的人不可論斷別人(羅馬書十四章3節)。那君王般的牧人大衛,時時刻刻供應銀白的奶與乳酪。撒該毫不遲延地付出他四倍的禮份。神與我們的主、神的兒子耶穌基督,供應甘甜之物,正如那位在我們以先於此筵席上得飽足者所說:「你的言語在我喉中何等甘美,遠勝過蜜;那蜂房在我口中也是如此!」(詩篇一一八篇103節)。弟兄們,這些事若有人甘心相信,他必尋見更為豐盛的食物;
Tobias the wayfarer carefully prepares the inward parts of the river-fish, and it is enough. John the camel-clad, devoutly running ahead, brought from his own place locusts as well. That one should not censure another who is eating, Paul the inviter admonishes (Rom. XIV, 3). David, the royal shepherd, at every moment supplies silvery milk and cheese. Zacchaeus without delay pays out his fourfold tribute-gifts. God and our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, supplies sweet things, just as He who, before us, was fed at this banquet, says: 'How sweet are Your words to my throat, above honey, and the honeycomb to my mouth!' (Ps. CXVIII, 103). These things, brethren, if anyone shall have willingly believed, he will find yet more abundant fare;

with which, if he be diligent, he will always satisfy both himself and others with all good things: through our Lord Jesus Christ. TRACTATE XXXIX. To the neophytes after baptism II. Rightly does the most holy David say: 'Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered' (Ps. XXXI, 1); for he cannot be blessed, brethren, who persists in his first nativity, whom the kindled torch of seething offenses burns at every moment; who carries about with him the stench of his own prison; who feels the executioner before he sees him; who dreads the name of the judge; who, as soon as a whisper has arisen, thinks himself sought, thinks himself found out:

對他而言,毫無通往安穩的進步,即使他碰巧沒有原告、沒有知情的見證人;因為他不能沒有他自己,因為良心比任何拷問者更兇猛,從不離棄它自己的罪人。弟兄們,你們直到如今一直處在這罪咎中;但你們已被大力地查驗;然而,為使你們得著赦免,你們曾為自己好好儆醒,你們已極出色地蒙了垂聽。這是一種新的審判方式:被告若為自己的罪辯解,便被定罪;若認罪,便得開釋。哦,我們審判者何等大的權能、何等高的本領、何等深的慈憐!各樣的罪人,為要能蒙福地活著,竟向祂急切地求受刑罰;
for whom there is no advance toward security, even if it should befall him to lack an accuser and a knowing witness; since he cannot lack his own self, because conscience, more violent than any torturer, never deserts its own sinner. In this guilt, brethren, you have been until now; but you have been mightily examined; but, that you might receive pardon, you kept good watch on your own behalf, and you have been most excellently heard. A new kind of judgment, in which the accused, if he excuses his crime, is condemned, and is absolved if he confesses it. O great power, great skill, great piety of our Judge! by whom sinners of every kind, that they may be able to live blessedly, hasten to be punished;

descendit quippe gladius pius in visu era peccatoris, et uno eodemque ictu, incolumi corporis manente materia, interficit hominem veterem, creat novum, et sacri gurgilis elemento sepelit. 因為那慈憐的刀劍在罪人眼前降下,並以同一擊——肉身的本質安然無損——殺死舊人,造出新人,並將他葬於那聖潔洪流的元素之中。一切水的本性既是這樣:當它們將活人接入深處,便把死人吐出來;而我們的水卻接納死人,吐出活人,使人從不過是動物變為真正的人,使人從人將要轉變為天使——只要他們漸長的年歲不改變他們的嬰孩之態。第四十篇講道。向受洗後的新領洗者(三)。弟兄們,讓我們在基督裡歡躍;
for the merciful sword descended in the sight of the sinner, and with one and the same stroke, the matter of the body remaining unharmed, it slays the old man, creates a new one, and buries him in the element of the sacred flood. And whereas the nature of all waters is such that, when they have received men alive into the depth, they vomit them up dead, our water receives the dead and vomits up the living, men made true men out of mere animals, men about to pass over from men into angels, if the advanced age of these do not change their infancy. TRACTATE XL. To the neophytes after baptism III. Let us exult, brethren, in Christ;

triumphatorique perpetuo hymnis , citharis , tympanis , canticis gratiam referamus, qui nobis promissa perpetuans pia (2) sanctione (ut aiunt) claves vere aureas misit: et quidem non illas, quæ maligno beneficio crimina excipiunt, quæ corpori parcunt , animam liberare non possunt; quæ peccata, cum dissimulando praeter- eunt, non adimunt, sed (3) includunt ; quæ reum, qualem invenerint, talem quoque dimittunt; quae in pari causa ipsi præstatori nihil prodesse possunt. At vero nostrae acervatim absolvunt, quidquid invene rint , nec aliquid (4) subsecivi esse patiuntur : sed pectorum aperiunt cuncta penetralia , diligenter uni versa crimina expellunt.
and let us render thanks to the everlasting Triumpher with hymns, harps, timbrels, and songs, who, perpetuating His promises to us by a holy ordinance (as they say), sent keys that are truly golden: and indeed not those which, by a malign benefit, receive crimes, which spare the body but cannot free the soul; which, when by dissembling they pass over sins, do not take them away but shut them in; which dismiss the guilty just as they found him; which in an equal cause can profit nothing to the very one who bestows them. But ours absolve in a heap whatsoever they have found, nor do they suffer anything to remain over: rather they open all the inner recesses of the breast and diligently drive out all crimes,

and again diligently close it up, lest anything, even trifling, from that which is shut out, should return thence. Wondrous reason, wondrous blessedness! With the accused kept safe, the guilt is punished in the accused, and with his state kept whole, that dies in the man on account of which the man had been about to die. Hence it is that our confession has no need of torments; that without the sweat of the torturer the guilty man of his own accord confesses his deeds, that he may become innocent. Precious is the indulgence, brethren, which bestows both pardon and medicine. For the rest, whoever spares a poisoner, a murderer, an adulterer, an incestuous man, a sacrilegious man, unless he have cured his disease, I do not see what he has done for him. O the profound providence of our Liberator! O singular excellence! O sweet sentence!

O necessary condemnation! Man is slain, that he may live: the striker is not seen, nor the striker's sword; the wound of the stricken does not gape, the blood does not flow, the color is not discolored. He is the same, and yet he is not the same. The dwelling indeed seems old, but the tenant is new, showing the nobility of his nativity to unbelievers by various virtues through a change of conduct.
and certain things changed, is contained that which is set forth partly in tractate XXXIX, partly in tractate XL. Exult, brethren, in Christ, and the indulgence having been received, diligently, mightily, and faithfully keep the royal benefit; for every bond of yours has been taken away and removed: rejoice securely; you now owe nothing to the world. The image of guilt, indeed, you have been until now, but you have been mightily examined; and, that you might receive pardon, you kept good watch on your own behalf: you have been most excellently heard. A new kind of judgment it is, in which the accused, if he excuses his crime, is condemned; he is absolved, if he confesses it.

He is the same, yet he is not himself. The dwelling indeed seems old, but the new tenant exults in the change of conduct, about to prove the nobility of his nativity to unbelievers by various virtues. TRACTATE XLII. To the neophytes after baptism V. Hail today, brethren born in Christ, and the indulgence having been received, diligently, mightily, and faithfully keep the royal benefit; for every bond of yours has been taken away: rejoice securely; you now owe nothing to the world. Behold, there is no weight, no grating of worldly chains upon your necks.

Your hands are hindered by no bonds, your feet weighed down by no fetters. No terror harasses you, no defilements darken you. You who feared the conscious accomplice no longer fear conscience: for your old man has been happily condemned, that he might be absolved; buried by the wave of the sacred flood, that, quickened in the nest of the tomb, he might taste the rights of resurrection. O the great providence of our God! O the pure charity of a good mother! receiving those diverse in race, sex, age, and condition, she slays them out of hatred for their crimes, as a stepmother; she preserves them devoutly, as a mother; and she does not quicken the slain before she has extinguished all the venom of their old state.

Ne quid (4) adulterum pariat, ac ne quem plus amare videatur, aut minus, unam nativitatem , unum (5) lac, unum 260 (6) sti pendium, ullam Spiritus sancti præstat omnibus di gnitatem. Quam speciosum est, fratres, quamque sa lutare, quem paulo ante ridiculo habueris, admirari: cujus exsecratus sis corruptelam, optes imitari virtu- tem : (7) qnem cupidom semper horrueris, stupeas passim in pauperes et egcnos sua bona universa fun dentem : postremo quem noveris idololatriæ fanum, gaudeas Dei templum. 為使她不致生出任何摻雜之物,也免得她顯得偏愛某人多些或少些,她便賜給眾人同一個出生、同一樣的奶、同一份津貼、同一個聖靈的尊貴。弟兄們,這是何等美好、何等有益的事:去欽佩那不久前還被你嗤笑的人;去渴望效法那你曾憎惡其敗壞之人的德行;去驚奇地看著那你一向懼怕為貪婪之人,如今卻處處將自己一切的財物傾倒在貧窮缺乏者身上;最後去歡喜那你曾認得是偶像崇拜之廟宇的人,如今竟是神的殿。所以,凡記得自己已重生的人永遠有福;那不記得自己重生以前為何等人的,更為有福;
Lest she bring forth anything adulterate, and lest she seem to love anyone more or less, she bestows on all one nativity, one milk, one stipend, one and the same dignity of the Holy Spirit. How beautiful it is, brethren, and how salutary, to admire him whom a little before you held in ridicule; to long to imitate the virtue of him whose corruption you abhorred; to be amazed at him whom you ever dreaded as covetous, now pouring out everywhere all his goods upon the poor and needy; and finally to rejoice that he whom you had known to be a shrine of idolatry is a temple of God. Therefore he is ever blessed who remembers that he has been reborn; more blessed he who does not remember what he was before he was reborn;

那因時光推進而未曾改變自己嬰孩之態的,最為有福。第四十三篇講道。向受洗後的新領洗者。論十二宮。(一)屬天的眾族啊,歡躍吧,你們這些在基督裡的新質;要以不止息的殷勤,保守你們今日這至為茂盛的屬靈出生之潔白,使你們無論如何不致玷污它;因為它不知如何重複它所賜的恩。看哪,男童、少年、青年、老者,無論男女,你們原是有罪的,也因屬世的出生而污穢,如今卻反倒脫離了一切罪咎,成了潔淨的嬰孩:而且,令人欽佩又欣喜的是,你們這些原本年齡各異的人,忽然在一瞬間被造成同齡。但我深知你們從舊日生活習慣而來的好奇心;
most blessed he who shall not have changed his infancy by the advance of time. TRACTATE XLIII. To the neophytes after baptism. On the twelve signs. I. Heavenly peoples, exult, new pledges in Christ; and the whiteness of your most flourishing spiritual birth this day, keep with unceasing diligence, that you may in no way stain it; for it knows not how to repeat what it bestows. Behold, boys, adolescents, young men, old men of either sex, who were guilty, were also unclean by worldly nativity, are now, on the contrary, free of all guilt, clean infants: and, what is admirable and welcome, you have suddenly in one moment been made of equal age, you who were of diverse ages. But I well know your curiosity from the usage of your old life;

quod qui- dem vobis ulterius non licebit. Fortassis requiratis et a nobis, qua genitura, quove signo tam diversos, tam plures, tam dispares una uno partu vestra vos peperil mater. Sicut parvulis morem geram, sacri que (6) horoscopi pandam tota brevitate secreta. 263 II.
which indeed will henceforth not be permitted to you. Perhaps you may ask of us also, by what birth, by what sign, your mother bore you, so diverse, so many, so unlike, all in one birth. Just as I will indulge the little ones, I will disclose with all brevity the secrets of the sacred horoscope. II. Therefore, brethren, such is your nativity. The First, who rejects no one believing in Him, received you not as the Ram but as the Lamb: who clothed your nakedness with the snowy whiteness of His own fleece: who graciously poured His own blessed milk into your lips gaping with infant wailing.

Idem non tumidus cervice, non torvus fronte, non minax cornu Taurus, sed optimus, dulcis, blan dus ac mitis vos admonei (9) Vitulus, ut nulla ullo in opere captantes auguria, ejus sine malitia succe dentes jugo, terramque vestræ carnis domando fe cundantes, laetam divinorum seminum messem cœ lestibus horreis inferatis. Et admonet prosequentibus Geminis, id est duobus salutare canentibus testa mentis, ut principaliLer idololatriam, impudicitiam , avaritiamque fugiatis, quae est incurabilis cancer. Leo autem noster, sicut Genesis protestatur (Gen. XLIX, 9), leonis est catulus, cujus ista pia sacramenta celebramus, qui ad hoc recubans obdormivit, ut vinceret mortem;
金牛座同樣勸勉你們——牠頸項不傲慢,額頭不兇猛,角不威嚇,乃是那至善、甘甜、溫柔而和順的牛犢:要你們在一切工作上不去捕捉任何徵兆,毫無惡意地順服牠的軛,並藉著馴服你們肉體的土地使之豐饒,好將神聖種子那喜樂的收成運進屬天的倉廩。祂又藉那隨後的雙子座勸勉,就是藉那兩部協同歌頌救恩的約書,要你們首先逃避偶像崇拜、淫亂與貪婪,這貪婪乃是無法醫治的毒瘤。但我們的獅子,正如《創世記》所見證的(創四十九9),乃是獅子的幼崽,我們在此慶祝牠的這些虔敬聖禮;牠為此俯臥睡去,為要戰勝死亡;
Likewise the Bull admonishes you — not swollen of neck, not grim of brow, not threatening with the horn, but as the best, sweet, gentle and mild Calf: that, snatching after no omens in any work, submitting to his yoke without malice, and by taming the earth of your flesh making it fruitful, you may bring a joyful harvest of the divine seeds into the heavenly granaries. And he admonishes through the Twins that follow, that is, through the two Testaments singing salvation in concert, that above all you flee idolatry, unchastity, and avarice, which is an incurable cancer. But our Lion, as Genesis testifies (Gen. 49:9), is the whelp of a lion, whose holy mysteries we here celebrate, who for this reason lay down and slept, that he might conquer death;

and for this he awoke, that he might bestow on us the gift of immortality of his blessed resurrection. Fittingly the Virgin follows, foretelling the Balance, that we might know, through the Son of God who came forth incarnate from a virgin, the wickedness and the justice brought upon the earth: and whoever holds this justice steadfastly and ministers it faithfully shall — I will not say the Scorpion, but, as the Lord says in the Gospel — tread upon all serpents whatsoever with unharmed foot. Nay, neither shall he ever dread the devil himself, who is truly the most savage Archer, armed with various and fiery arrows, at every moment piercing the hearts of the whole human race: on account of which Paul the Apostle thus speaks:
1:439
Induite vos armaturam Dei, ut possitis vos constare adversus nequitias diaboli, accepto scuto fidei, per quod poteritis omnes sagittas illius mali, quæ sunt igne plenæ, extinguere (Ephes VI, 11). 你們要穿戴神的軍裝,使你們能抵擋魔鬼的詭計,拿起信德的盾牌,藉此你們便能撲滅那惡者一切滿是火的箭(弗六11)。因為牠有時把摩羯座降在不幸的人身上,面貌醜陋,藉著牠的角,從更瘦削的嘴唇間以脹起的血管噴沫,伴隨那被擄者抽搐的崩潰,可悲地在全身肢體中肆虐。牠使有些人瘋狂,有些人狂亂,有些人成為兇手,有些人成為姦夫,有些人褻瀆神聖,又以貪婪使有些人盲目。逐一細數實在太冗長。牠有各樣無數加害的伎倆:但這一切,我們那湧流救恩之河的水瓶座,並不費力便慣於將之抹除;
Put on the armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, having taken up the shield of faith, by which you will be able to extinguish all his arrows of the evil one, which are full of fire (Eph. 6:11). For he sometimes sends upon the unhappy the Goat, deformed of face, and through its horn, frothing with swelling veins from its thinner lips, with the throbbing collapse of its captive, he rages pitiably through all the members. Some he makes mad, some frenzied, some murderers, some adulterers, some sacrilegious, some he blinds with avarice. It is too long to go through them one by one. He has various and innumerable arts of doing harm: but all these our Water-Bearer, flowing with a saving stream, is not greatly wont to wipe away;

quem necessario uno sequuntur duo Pisces in signo, id est duo ex Judæis et Gentibus populi, baptismatis aqua viventes, in unum populum Christi uno signo signati. TRACTATUS XLIV. (1) Ad Neophytos post baptismd VII. Die dominico de comparatione tritici. I. Exultemus, fratres, in Cliristo, tantique pro ventus redditu ditati , Deo patri omnipotenti laudes et gratias referamus ; qui 285 zizania, lolium, lap pas, tribulos in læta frumenta mutavit, quae diligenti cultu purgata, molarisque lapidis pio pondere feli citer fracta, ordinabiliter (2) creta, omni furfure abjecto, mirifico splendore in farinam candidam mi cuerunt ;
在那星座中,必然有兩條魚隨著牠,就是出於猶太人與外邦人的兩個民族,藉洗禮之水而活,以一個印記受印,歸入基督那一個子民。 第四十四篇講道。致受洗後的新領洗者,第七篇。論主日,關於麥子的比喻。 一、弟兄們,讓我們在基督裡歡躍,並因如此豐厚收成的回報而得富足,向全能的父神獻上讚美與感謝;祂將稗子、莠草、刺果與蒺藜變為喜樂的麥粒,這些麥粒經殷勤耕作潔淨,又蒙磨石虔敬的重壓幸福地碾碎,按次序篩過,棄去一切麩皮,便閃耀著奇妙的光輝化作潔白的麵粉;
and him there necessarily follow in the sign two Fishes, that is, two peoples from the Jews and the Gentiles, living by the water of baptism, sealed with one seal into the one people of Christ. TRACTATE 44. To the Neophytes after baptism, VII. On the Lord's Day, concerning the comparison of the wheat. I. Let us exult, brethren, in Christ, and enriched by the return of so great a yield, let us render praises and thanks to God the almighty Father; who has changed the tares, the darnel, the burrs, and the thistles into joyful grain, which, purged by diligent cultivation, and happily crushed by the holy weight of the millstone, sifted in due order, with all the bran cast off, gleamed in wondrous splendor into white flour;

which is corrupted by no leaven, but diligently kneaded and worked together. Salt was put into it; it was smoothed with the oil of the sacrifice, tempered with the fitting rites, and rendered into unleavened loaves. These whom you see, of excellent baking and sweetly fragrant, were baked not in an oven but in a font; not by human, but by divine fire: no breeze has corrupted them; no bitter smoke has tainted them; no cold has crushed them; and — what is more — they have been raised without leaven. Surely they are not pot-baked, nor stale, nor scorched, nor raw, nor moldy. Their color is milky; their taste is milky. II. But perhaps, because some appear smaller in form, if anything be thought otherwise of the baker, it is no concern of mine, brethren:

Denique et vos retinetis (9) pondus anti quum : habetis aginam : exagium facite, quemad modum vultis : singulos ponderate : invenietis nul lum habere 268 minus.
for though I am poor, yet I guard my brow and I know my faith. Surely, if they know anything, let the workmen who are with me speak. I rejoice in gain, but — I confess plainly — without the awareness of any theft. Finally, you too retain the ancient weight: you have the balance; make the weighing as you wish: weigh them one by one: you will find that none weighs less. They are all three pounds, stamped with one pound of the sacred coinage, who serve at the table. TRACTATE 45. Concerning the Lord's Day of Easter. I. The heir of the ages, running forth and back with swift course, wheeled upon itself by solemn motion, bringing forth for itself a beginning out of an end, infinite birthdays out of a setting, the everlasting day has shone forth:

quo discussa con volutæ hyemis tristitudine, novo vento Favonio blan diente. diversis floribus, genere, colore pariter et odore una nativitate diffusis, germinantia undique dulce prata respirant. Exsultat restas nova, 270 sed dives, in frumenti varias moles (3) spiceam feliciter contundens palmam : quam prosequetur congrue mu stulentus autumnus, ut necessario gratiæ panis vini quoque jucunditas jungeretur. Quis non hæc cælesti bus mysteriis coaptata cognoscat?
on which, the sadness of the rolled-up winter being shaken off, with the new West Wind Favonius caressing, the sweet meadows everywhere breathe again, sprouting with diverse flowers spread abroad in one birth, alike in kind, color, and scent. The new but rich harvest exults, happily beating down the wheat into its various heaps, crushing the spiked palm: and fittingly the wine-bearing autumn follows it, so that of necessity to the grace of bread the pleasantness of wine too might be joined. Who would not recognize these things as fitted to the heavenly mysteries?
1:444
For the winter, slothful, foul, and sad, pertains to those who, serving idolatry, fettered by worldly pleasures, devoted to lust and the gullet, far cut off — that is, destined by God to eternal death, because they loved the work of darkness. As the sacred spring we ought to receive the font, from whose rich channel — Favonius generating not as wind but as the Holy Spirit — the most radiant flowers of the Church, breathing a divine fragrance with blessed faith, by diverse gifts but one birth, and our sweet infants, are poured forth.
1:445
tEstas autem fidelis est populus, (6) angelicus et mundus, qui sponsionis suae palam for titer retinens, peccatorum paleis (7) limpidatus, se meL pretiosum frumentum divinis borreis inferre desiderans, licet suo uberet fonte, tamen æstuat semper justæ operationis 271 ardore. Autumnus quoque (8) martyrii locus est, in quo non vitis, sed fossoris sanguis effunditur : ut vita beata pretiosæ mortis vindemia comparetur. Dies vero ad sacramen tum pertinet resurrectionis Domini nostri Jesu Chri sti, qui in omnibusomnia est : qui vere æternus est, ac sine nocte dies; cui duodecim horae in Apostolis, duodecim menses serviunt in Prophetis;
但那夏天乃是忠信的子民,如天使般潔淨,他們公開而勇敢地持守自己的誓約,從罪的糠秕中得潔淨,渴望一次將寶貴的麥粒運進神聖的倉廩;他們雖以自己的泉源豐溢,卻仍常以正義勞作的熱忱燃燒。秋天也是殉道之處,在其中傾流的不是葡萄樹的血,乃是掘地者的血:好叫蒙福的生命藉寶貴之死的採收而得購得。但那日子乃是關乎我們主耶穌基督復活的奧祕,祂在萬有中是萬有:祂真是永恆的,是無夜之晝;十二個時辰在使徒身上事奉祂,十二個月份在先知身上事奉祂;
But the summer is the faithful people, angelic and clean, who, openly and bravely holding fast their pledge, cleansed from the chaff of sins, desiring once to bring the precious grain into the divine granaries, although it abounds with its own font, yet ever burns with the ardor of righteous labor. Autumn too is the place of martyrdom, in which not the blood of the vine but of the digger is poured out: that a blessed life may be purchased by the vintage of a precious death. But the Day pertains to the mystery of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is all in all: who is truly eternal, and a day without night; whom twelve hours serve in the Apostles, twelve months in the Prophets;

quem Evan geliorum salutaria (9) quatuor prædicant tempora; cui non anniversarii, sed quotidiani fructus respon dent, hymnum canentes Deo credentibus populis, qui omni immortalitatis semine propagantur in sae cula. In bujus diei luce gradientes exsuhemus fide, jucundemur bona conversatione, ut perpetuam vitam adipisci mereamur; per Dominum Jesum Christum. 272 TRACTATUS XLVI. De (1) Pascha II. (2) In stabili cursu, multiformi gratia redimitus, temporum solemni vestigio dies salutaris advenit. Idem sui successor, idemque decessor, longæva sem per ætate novellus, (3) anni parens, annique proge nies, antecedit, sequiturque tempora et sæcula infi nita. Parit sibi de fine principium ;
福音那四個帶來救恩的季節宣揚祂;應和祂的不是每年的果子,乃是每日的果子,向神為信主的子民歌唱讚美詩,這些子民帶著一切不朽的種子繁衍至萬代。讓我們行在這日子的光中,在信德裡歡躍,在美好的言行中歡喜,好叫我們配得永生;藉著主耶穌基督。 第四十六篇講道。論復活節,第二篇。 在它穩固的行程中,那帶來救恩的日子以季節莊嚴的足跡而來,戴著多樣的恩典。它既是自己的繼任者又是自己的前任,在悠長的歲月中永遠年輕,是年的父母又是年的後裔,走在季節與無窮世代之先,又隨在其後。它從終結為自己帶出開端;
whom the four saving seasons of the Gospels proclaim; to whom respond not yearly but daily fruits, singing a hymn to God for the believing peoples, who are propagated unto the ages with every seed of immortality. Walking in the light of this Day, let us exult in faith, let us be glad in good conduct, that we may merit to obtain everlasting life; through the Lord Jesus Christ. TRACTATE 46. On Easter, II. Girded with manifold grace in its steadfast course, the saving Day has come with the solemn footstep of the seasons. The same as its own successor and its own predecessor, ever young in long age, parent of the year and offspring of the year, it goes before and follows the seasons and the infinite ages. It brings forth for itself a beginning out of an end;
1:447
et tamen a cunis genitalibus non recedit. Profecto sacramenti domi nici imaginem portat; nam occasu passionem, resur rectionemque ortu redivivo concelebrat, per quem nobis munus futuræbeatitudinis pollicetur : hoc quoque nostris (4) competentibus præstaturus, quos nunc invitat fclix occasus, ut sacri oceani lacteo pro fundo demersi, (5) inde novello novellique cum die resurgentes, nobiscum possint ad immortalitatis glo riam pervenire. 273 TRACTATUS XLVII. De (1) Pascha III. Stabilis cursor, multiformi gratia redimitus (2) per temporum ambages pernicibus plantis sua recalcans officio solemni vestigia dies salutaris advenit.
and yet it does not depart from its native cradle. Truly it bears the image of the Lord's mystery; for by its setting it celebrates together the passion, and by its rising with renewed birth the resurrection, through which it promises us the gift of future blessedness: this too it is about to grant to those of ours who are seeking it (the candidates for baptism), whom now the happy setting invites, that, plunged into the milky deep of the sacred ocean, rising thence with the new day and renewed, they may be able with us to attain unto the glory of immortality. TRACTATE 47. On Easter, III. The steadfast runner, garlanded with manifold grace, retracing through the windings of the seasons with swift feet its own footsteps by solemn office, the saving Day has come.
1:448
Idem sibi successor, idemque decessor, longæva semper :ctate novellus, anni parens, annique progenies, an tecedit, quæ sequitur, tempora, et sxcula infinita disseminat. Parit sibi de fine principium ; hoc nostris quoque hodie compotentibus 274 prætaturus, quos jam nunc felix invitat occasus, ut sacri oceani lacteo profundo demersi, surgentes inde novello novelli cum die, sua luce radiantes, nobiscum possint immorta litatis per aerium tramitem cursu servato ad repro missionis tempus, ubi in perpetuum quis oritur, per venire. TRACTATUS XLVIII. De (1) Pascha IV.
The same as its own successor and its own predecessor, ever young in long age, parent of the year and offspring of the year, it goes before the seasons that follow, and scatters abroad the infinite ages. It brings forth for itself a beginning out of an end; this too it is about to grant today to those of ours who seek it, whom now the happy setting invites, that, plunged into the milky deep of the sacred ocean, rising thence renewed with the new day, shining with their own light, they may be able with us, the course being kept, to come by the airy path to the time of the promise — unto immortality, where one rises forever.
