Now Boos went up to the gate and sat down there; and behold, the kinsman-redeemer of whom Boos had spoken was passing by. And Boos said to him, "Turn aside and sit down here, friend." And he turned aside and sat down.
And Boos said to the kinsman-redeemer, "The portion of the field which belonged to our brother Abimelech has been given over to Noemin, who has returned from the country of Moab.
And I thought to disclose it to you, saying: buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if you will not redeem it, tell me, that I may know; for there is no one but you to redeem it, and I come after you." And he said, "I will redeem it."
Then Boos said, "On the day you buy the field from the hand of Noemin, you must also buy Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead man, in order to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance."
And the kinsman-redeemer said, "I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. Redeem for yourself my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem it."
Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redemption and concerning exchange, to confirm every matter: a man drew off his sandal and gave it to his neighbor who was redeeming his right of redemption; and this was the attestation in Israel.
And Boos said to the elders and to all the people, "You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Abimelech's, and all that belonged to Chelaion and to Maalon, from the hand of Noemin.
Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Maalon, I have bought to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the tribe of his people. You are witnesses this day."
And all the people who were at the gate said, "We are witnesses." And the elders said, "May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your house like Rachel and like Leah, who together built up the house of Israel; and they wrought power in Ephratha, and there shall be a name in Bethlehem.
And he shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law who loves you has borne him, she who is better to you than seven sons."
And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, "A son has been born to Noemin." And they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jessai, the father of David.
