4:1 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר ־שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל לְכׇל ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֵּצֵ֣א יִשְׂרָאֵל֩ לִקְרַ֨את פְּלִשְׁתִּ֜ים לַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ עַל ־הָאֶ֣בֶן הָעֵ֔זֶר וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים חָנ֥וּ בַאֲפֵֽק ׃
καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις καὶ συναθροίζονται ἀλλόφυλοι εἰς πόλεμον ἐπὶ Ισραηλ καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ισραηλ εἰς ἀπάντησιν αὐτοῖς εἰς πόλεμον καὶ παρεμβάλλουσιν ἐπὶ Αβενεζερ καὶ οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι παρεμβάλλουσιν ἐν Αφεκ
Et factum est in diebus illis , convenerunt Philisthiim in pugnam : et egressus est Israël obviam Philisthiim in praelium , et castrametatus est juxta lapidem Adjutorii . Porro Philisthiim venerunt in Aphec ,
ወእምዝ ፡ ኮነ ፡ በእማንቱ ፡ መዋዕል ፡ ተጋብኡ ፡ ኢሎፍሊ ፡ ላዕለ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ከመ ፡ ይቅትልዎሙ ፡ ወወጽኡ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ወተቀበልዎሙ ፡ ይትቃተልዎሙ ፡ ወተዐየኑ ፡ ውስተ ፡ አቤኔዜር ፡ ወኢሎፍሊ ፡ ተዐየኑ ፡ ውስተ ፡ አፌቅ ።
The word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Ebenezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.
4:2 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיַּעַרְכ֨וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֜ים לִקְרַ֣את יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַתִּטֹּשׁ֙ הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וַיִּנָּ֥גֶף יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לִפְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיַּכּ֤וּ בַמַּֽעֲרָכָה֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה כְּאַרְבַּ֥עַת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִֽישׁ ׃
καὶ παρατάσσονται οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι εἰς πόλεμον ἐπὶ Ισραηλ καὶ ἔκλινεν ὁ πόλεμος καὶ ἔπταισεν ἀνὴρ Ισραηλ ἐνώπιον ἀλλοφύλων καὶ ἐπλήγησαν ἐν τῇ παρατάξει ἐν ἀγρῷ τέσσαρες χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν
et instruxerunt aciem contra Israël . Inito autem certamine , terga vertit Israël Philisthaeis : et caesa sunt in illo certamine passim per agros , quasi quatuor millia virorum .
ወተአኀዝዎሙ ፡ ኢሎፍሊ ፡ ወተቃተልዎሙ ፡ ለእስራኤል ፡ ወነትዑ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ወወደቁ ፡ ቅድመ ፡ ኢሎፍሊ ፡ ወሞቱ ፡ በውስተ ፡ ቀትል ፡ በገዳም ፡ አርብዓ ፡ ምእት ፡ ብእሲ ።
The Philistines put themselves in array against Israel. When they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.
4:3 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיָּבֹ֣א הָעָם֮ אֶל ־הַֽמַּחֲנֶה֒ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ זִקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לָ֣מָּה נְגָפָ֧נוּ יְהֹוָ֛ה הַיּ֖וֹם לִפְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים נִקְחָ֧ה אֵלֵ֣ינוּ מִשִּׁלֹ֗ה אֶת ־אֲרוֹן֙ בְּרִ֣ית יְהֹוָ֔ה וְיָבֹ֣א בְקִרְבֵּ֔נוּ וְיֹשִׁעֵ֖נוּ מִכַּ֥ף אֹיְבֵֽינוּ ׃
καὶ ἦλθεν ὁ λαὸς εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν καὶ εἶπαν οἱ πρεσβύτεροι Ισραηλ κατὰ τί ἔπταισεν ἡμᾶς κύριος σήμερον ἐνώπιον ἀλλοφύλων λάβωμεν τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἐκ Σηλωμ καὶ ἐξελθέτω ἐν μέσῳ ἡμῶν καὶ σώσει ἡμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς ἐχθρῶν ἡμῶν
Et reversus est populus ad castra : dixeruntque majores natu de Israël : Quare percussit nos Dominus hodie coram Philisthiim ? afferamus ad nos de Silo arcam foederis Domini , et veniat in medium nostri , ut salvet nos de manu inimicorum nostrorum .
ወገብኡ ፡ ሕዝብ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ትዕይንት ፡ ወይቤሉ ፡ ሊቃውንተ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ በበይነ ፡ ምንት ፡ አውደቀነ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ዮም ፡ ቅድሜሆሙ ፡ ለኢሎፍሊ ፤ ንንሣእ ፡ ታቦተ ፡ አምላክነ ፡ እምሴሎም ፡ ወትሖር ፡ ምስሌነ ፡ ወታድኅነነ ፡ እምነ ፡ እዴሆሙ ፡ ለፀርነ ።
When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has Yahweh defeated us today before the Philistines? Let’s get the ark of Yahweh’s covenant out of Shiloh and bring it to us, that it may come among us and save us out of the hand of our enemies.”
4:4 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח הָעָם֙ שִׁלֹ֔ה וַיִּשְׂא֣וּ מִשָּׁ֗ם אֵ֣ת אֲר֧וֹן בְּרִית ־יְהֹוָ֛ה צְבָא֖וֹת יֹשֵׁ֣ב הַכְּרֻבִ֑ים וְשָׁ֞ם שְׁנֵ֣י בְנֵֽי ־עֵלִ֗י עִם ־אֲרוֹן֙ בְּרִ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים חׇפְנִ֖י וּפִֽינְחָֽס ׃
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ λαὸς εἰς Σηλωμ καὶ αἴρουσιν ἐκεῖθεν τὴν κιβωτὸν κυρίου καθημένου χερουβιμ καὶ ἀμφότεροι οἱ υἱοὶ Ηλι μετὰ τῆς κιβωτοῦ Οφνι καὶ Φινεες
Misit ergo populus in Silo , et tulerunt inde arcam foederis Domini exercituum sedentis super cherubim : erantque duo filii Heli cum arca foederis Dei , Ophni et Phinees .
ወለአኩ ፡ ሕዝብ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ሴሎም ፡ ወአምጽእዋ ፡ እምህየ ፡ ለታቦተ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ምስለ ፡ ኪሩብ ፡ ዘይነብር ፡ ላዕሌሃ ፡ ወክልኤሆሙ ፡ ደቂቀ ፡ ኤሊ ፡ ምስለ ፡ ታቦት ፡ ኦፍኒ ፡ ወፊንሐስ ።
So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of Armies, who sits above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
4:5 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיְהִ֗י כְּב֨וֹא אֲר֤וֹן בְּרִית ־יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל ־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה וַיָּרִ֥עוּ כׇל ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל תְּרוּעָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֑ה וַתֵּהֹ֖ם הָאָֽרֶץ ׃
καὶ ἐγενήθη ὡς ἦλθεν κιβωτὸς κυρίου εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν καὶ ἀνέκραξεν πᾶς Ισραηλ φωνῇ μεγάλῃ καὶ ἤχησεν ἡ γῆ
Cumque venisset arca foederis Domini in castra , vociferatus est omnis Israël clamore grandi , et personuit terra .
ወሶበ ፡ በጽሐት ፡ ታቦተ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ውስተ ፡ ትዕይንት ፡ ወውዑ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ በዐቢይ ፡ ቃል ፡ ወደንገፀት ፡ ምድር ።
When the ark of Yahweh’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth resounded.
4:6 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּשְׁמְע֤וּ פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ אֶת ־ק֣וֹל הַתְּרוּעָ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ מֶ֠ה ק֣וֹל הַתְּרוּעָ֧ה הַגְּדוֹלָ֛ה הַזֹּ֖את בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה הָעִבְרִ֑ים וַיֵּ֣דְע֔וּ כִּ֚י אֲר֣וֹן יְהֹוָ֔ה בָּ֖א אֶל ־הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה ׃
καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι τῆς κραυγῆς καὶ εἶπον οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι τίς ἡ κραυγὴ ἡ μεγάλη αὕτη ἐν παρεμβολῇ τῶν Εβραίων καὶ ἔγνωσαν ὅτι κιβωτὸς κυρίου ἥκει εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν
Et audierunt Philisthiim vocem clamoris , dixeruntque : Quaenam est haec vox clamoris magni in castris Hebraeorum ? Et cognoverunt quod arca Domini venisset in castra .
ወሰምዑ ፡ ኢሎፍሊ ፡ ዘንተ ፡ ውውዓ ፡ ወይቤሉ ፡ ኢሎፍሊ ፡ ምንት ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ውውዓ ፡ ዐቢይ ፡ ዘውስተ ፡ ተዓይኒሆሙ ፡ ለዕብራውያን ፤ ወአእመሩ ፡ ከመ ፡ ታቦተ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ በጽሐት ፡ ውስተ ፡ ትዕይንት ።
When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” They understood that Yahweh’s ark had come into the camp.
4:7 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּֽרְאוּ֙ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים כִּ֣י אָֽמְר֔וּ בָּ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל ־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ א֣וֹי לָ֔נוּ כִּ֣י לֹ֥א הָיְתָ֛ה כָּזֹ֖את אֶתְמ֥וֹל שִׁלְשֹֽׁם ׃
καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι καὶ εἶπον οὗτοι οἱ θεοὶ ἥκασιν πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν οὐαὶ ἡμῖν ἐξελοῦ ἡμᾶς κύριε σήμερον ὅτι οὐ γέγονεν τοιαύτη ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην
Timueruntque Philisthiim , dicentes : Venit Deus in castra . Et ingemuerunt , dicentes :
ወይቤሉ ፡ ኢሎፍሊ ፡ ሶበ ፡ ፈርሁ ፡ አሌ ፡ ለነ ፡ እስመ ፡ አማልክት ፡ መጽኡ ፡ ኀቤሆሙ ፡ ለእሉ ።
The Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” They said, “Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before.
4:8 ⧉ ⤴︎ א֣וֹי לָ֔נוּ מִ֣י יַצִּילֵ֔נוּ מִיַּ֛ד הָאֱלֹהִ֥ים הָאַדִּירִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה אֵ֧לֶּה הֵ֣ם הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים הַמַּכִּ֧ים אֶת ־מִצְרַ֛יִם בְּכׇל ־מַכָּ֖ה בַּמִּדְבָּֽר ׃
οὐαὶ ἡμῖν τίς ἐξελεῖται ἡμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς τῶν θεῶν τῶν στερεῶν τούτων οὗτοι οἱ θεοὶ οἱ πατάξαντες τὴν Αἴγυπτον ἐν πάσῃ πληγῇ καὶ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ
Vae nobis : non enim fuit tanta exultatio heri et nudiustertius : vae nobis . Quis nos salvabit de manu deorum sublimium istorum ? hi sunt dii , qui percusserunt Aegyptum omni plaga in deserto .
አድኅነነ ፡ እግዚኦ ፡ ዮም ፡ እስመ ፡ ኢኮነ ፡ ከመዝ ፡ ትካት ፤ አሌ ፡ ለነ ፡ መኑ ፡ ያድኅነነ ፡ አምእዴሆሙ ፡ ለእሉ ፡ አማልክት ፡ ጽኑዓን ፤ አሉ ፡ እሙንቱ ፡ አማልክት ፡ እለ ፡ ቀተልዎሙ ፡ ለግብጽ ፡ በኵሉ ፡ መቅሠፍት ፡ ወበገዳምኒ ።
Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.
4:9 ⧉ ⤴︎ הִֽתְחַזְּק֞וּ וִֽהְי֤וּ לַֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים פֶּ֚ן תַּעַבְד֣וּ לָֽעִבְרִ֔ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָבְד֖וּ לָכֶ֑ם וִהְיִיתֶ֥ם לַאֲנָשִׁ֖ים וְנִלְחַמְתֶּֽם ׃
κραταιοῦσθε καὶ γίνεσθε εἰς ἄνδρας ἀλλόφυλοι μήποτε δουλεύσητε τοῖς Εβραίοις καθὼς ἐδούλευσαν ἡμῖν καὶ ἔσεσθε εἰς ἄνδρας καὶ πολεμήσατε αὐτούς
Confortamini , et estote viri , Philisthiim , ne serviatis Hebraeis , sicut et illi servierunt vobis : confortamini , et bellate .
ጸንሁ ፡ ወኮኑ ፡ ዕደወ ፡ ወተቃተልዎሙ ።
Be strong and behave like men, O you Philistines, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like men, and fight!”
4:10 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּלָּחֲמ֣וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים וַיִּנָּ֤גֶף יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיָּנֻ֙סוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ לְאֹהָלָ֔יו וַתְּהִ֥י הַמַּכָּ֖ה גְּדוֹלָ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד וַיִּפֹּל֙ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף רַגְלִֽי ׃
καὶ ἐπολέμησαν αὐτούς καὶ πταίει ἀνὴρ Ισραηλ καὶ ἔφυγεν ἕκαστος εἰς σκήνωμα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐγένετο πληγὴ μεγάλη σφόδρα καὶ ἔπεσαν ἐξ Ισραηλ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες ταγμάτων
Pugnaverunt ergo Philisthiim , et caesus est Israël , et fugit unusquisque in tabernaculum suum : et facta est plaga magna nimis , et ceciderunt de Israël triginta millia peditum .
ወእምዝ ፡ ሶበ ፡ ተቃተልዎሙ ፡ ወድቁ ፡ ሰብአ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ቅድመ ፡ ኢሎፍሊ ፡ ወጐዩ ፡ ኵሎሙ ፡ ውስተ ፡ አብያቲሆሙ ፡ ወኮነ ፡ ቀትል ፡ ዐቢይ ፡ ጥቀ ፡ ወወድቁ ፡ እምነ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ ሠለስቱ ፡ አልፍ ፡ ብእሲ ።
The Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter; for thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell.
4:11 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַאֲר֥וֹן אֱלֹהִ֖ים נִלְקָ֑ח וּשְׁנֵ֤י בְנֵֽי ־עֵלִי֙ מֵ֔תוּ חׇפְנִ֖י וּפִֽינְחָֽס ׃
καὶ κιβωτὸς θεοῦ ἐλήμφθη καὶ ἀμφότεροι υἱοὶ Ηλι ἀπέθανον Οφνι καὶ Φινεες
Et arca Dei capta est : duo quoque filii Heli mortui sunt , Ophni et Phinees .
ወነሥእዋ ፡ ለታቦተ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ወሞቱ ፡ ክልኤሆሙ ፡ ደቂቁ ፡ ለኤሊ ፡ ኦፍኒ ፡ ወፈንሐስ ።
God’s ark was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
4:12 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיָּ֤רׇץ אִישׁ ־בִּנְיָמִן֙ מֵהַמַּ֣עֲרָכָ֔ה וַיָּבֹ֥א שִׁלֹ֖ה בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא וּמַדָּ֣יו קְרֻעִ֔ים וַאֲדָמָ֖ה עַל ־רֹאשֽׁוֹ ׃
καὶ ἔδραμεν ἀνὴρ Ιεμιναῖος ἐκ τῆς παρατάξεως καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Σηλωμ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ διερρηγότα καὶ γῆ ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ
Currens autem vir de Benjamin ex acie , venit in Silo in die illa , scissa veste , et conspersus pulvere caput .
ወሮጸ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ ኢያሜናይ ፡ እምኀበ ፡ ይትቃተሉ ፡ ወበጽሐ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ሴሎም ፡ በይእቲ ፡ ዕለት ፡ ወሥጡጥ ፡ አልባሲሁ ፡ ወመሬት ፡ ውስተ ፡ ርእሱ ።
A man of Benjamin ran out of the army and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.
4:13 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיָּב֗וֹא וְהִנֵּ֣ה עֵ֠לִ֠י יֹשֵׁ֨ב עַֽל ־הַכִּסֵּ֜א (יך ) [יַ֥ד ] דֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ מְצַפֶּ֔ה כִּֽי ־הָיָ֤ה לִבּוֹ֙ חָרֵ֔ד עַ֖ל אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְהָאִ֗ישׁ בָּ֚א לְהַגִּ֣יד בָּעִ֔יר וַתִּזְעַ֖ק כׇּל ־הָעִֽיר ׃
καὶ ἦλθεν καὶ ἰδοὺ Ηλι ἐκάθητο ἐπὶ τοῦ δίφρου παρὰ τὴν πύλην σκοπεύων τὴν ὁδόν ὅτι ἦν ἡ καρδία αὐτοῦ ἐξεστηκυῖα περὶ τῆς κιβωτοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἀπαγγεῖλαι καὶ ἀνεβόησεν ἡ πόλις
Cumque ille venisset , Heli sedebat super sellam contra viam spectans . Erat enim cor ejus pavens pro arca Dei . Vir autem ille postquam ingressus est , nuntiavit urbi : et ululavit omnis civitas .
ወበጽሐ ፡ [ወናሁ ፡ ኤሊ ፡]ይነብር ፡ ውስተ ፡ መንበር ፡ ኀበ ፡ ኆኅተ ፡ አንቀጽ ፡ ወይኔጽር ፡ መንገለ ፡ ፍኖት ፡ እስመ ፡ ይትሐዘብ ፡ ልቡ ፡ በእንተ ፡ ታቦተ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፤ ወቦአ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ሀገር ፡ ወዜነወ ፡ ወጸርኀት ፡ ሀገር ።
When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for God’s ark. When the man came into the city and told about it, all the city cried out.
4:14 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע עֵלִי֙ אֶת ־ק֣וֹל הַצְּעָקָ֔ה וַיֹּ֕אמֶר מֶ֛ה ק֥וֹל הֶהָמ֖וֹן הַזֶּ֑ה וְהָאִ֣ישׁ מִהַ֔ר וַיָּבֹ֖א וַיַּגֵּ֥ד לְעֵלִֽי ׃
καὶ ἤκουσεν Ηλι τὴν φωνὴν τῆς βοῆς καὶ εἶπεν τίς ἡ βοὴ τῆς φωνῆς ταύτης καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος σπεύσας εἰσῆλθεν καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ Ηλι
Et audivit Heli sonitum clamoris , dixitque : Quis est hic sonitus tumultus hujus ? At ille festinavit , et venit , et nuntiavit Heli .
ወሰምዐ ፡ ኤሊ ፡ ቃለ ፡ ጽራኀ ፡ ወይቤ ፡ ምንት ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ጽራኀ ፤ ወሮጸ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ ወቦአ ፡ ወዜነዎ ፡ ለኤሊ ።
When Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?” The man hurried, and came and told Eli.
4:15 ⧉ ⤴︎ וְעֵלִ֕י בֶּן ־תִּשְׁעִ֥ים וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה שָׁנָ֑ה וְעֵינָ֣יו קָ֔מָה וְלֹ֥א יָכ֖וֹל לִרְאֽוֹת ׃
καὶ Ηλι υἱὸς ἐνενήκοντα ἐτῶν καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπανέστησαν καὶ οὐκ ἔβλεπεν καὶ εἶπεν Ηλὶ τοῖς ἀνδράσιν τοῖς περιεστηκόσιν αὐτῷ τίς ἡ φωνὴ τοῦ ἤχους τούτου
Heli autem erat nonaginta et octo annorum , et oculi ejus caligaverant , et videre non poterat .
ወኤሊሰ ፡ ወልደ ፡ ተስዓ ፡ ዓም ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ወአዕይንቲሁኒ ፡ ተሐምጋ ፡ ወኢይሬኢ ።
Now Eli was ninety-eight years old. His eyes were set, so that he could not see.
4:16 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר הָאִ֜ישׁ אֶל ־עֵלִ֗י אָֽנֹכִי֙ הַבָּ֣א מִן ־הַמַּעֲרָכָ֔ה וַאֲנִ֕י מִן ־הַמַּעֲרָכָ֖ה נַ֣סְתִּי הַיּ֑וֹם וַיֹּ֛אמֶר מֶה ־הָיָ֥ה הַדָּבָ֖ר בְּנִֽי ׃
καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ σπεύσας προσῆλθεν πρὸς Ηλι καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἥκων ἐκ τῆς παρεμβολῆς κἀγὼ πέφευγα ἐκ τῆς παρατάξεως σήμερον καὶ εἶπεν τί τὸ γεγονὸς ῥῆμα τέκνον
Et dixit ad Heli : Ego sum qui veni de praelio , et ego qui de acie fugi hodie . Cui ille ait : Quid actum est , fili mi ?
ወይቤሎሙ ፡ ኤሊ ፡ ስዕደው ፡ እለ ፡ ይቀውሙ ፡ ኀቤሁ ፡ ምንት ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ድምፀ ፡ ቃል ፡ ወቦአ ፡ ፍጡነ ፡ ኀበ ፡ ኤሊ ፡ ዝኩ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ ወይቤሎ ፡ አነ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ ዘመጻእኩ ፡ እምነ ፡ ትዕይንት ፡ እምኀበ ፡ ቀትል ፡ ጐየይኩ ፡ አነ ፡ ዮም ፡ ወይቤሎ ፡ ኤሊ ፡ ምንትኑ ፡ ነገሩ ፡ ዘኮነ ፡ ወልድየ ።
The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”
4:17 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיַּ֨עַן הַֽמְבַשֵּׂ֜ר וַיֹּ֗אמֶר נָ֤ס יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לִפְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וְגַ֛ם מַגֵּפָ֥ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה הָיְתָ֣ה בָעָ֑ם וְגַם ־שְׁנֵ֨י בָנֶ֜יךָ מֵ֗תוּ חׇפְנִי֙ וּפִ֣ינְחָ֔ס וַאֲר֥וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים נִלְקָֽחָה ׃ {פ}
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη τὸ παιδάριον καὶ εἶπεν πέφευγεν ἀνὴρ Ισραηλ ἐκ προσώπου ἀλλοφύλων καὶ ἐγένετο πληγὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ λαῷ καὶ ἀμφότεροι οἱ υἱοί σου τεθνήκασιν καὶ ἡ κιβωτὸς τοῦ θεοῦ ἐλήμφθη
Respondens autem ille qui nuntiabat : Fugit , inquit , Israël coram Philisthiim , et ruina magna facta est in populo : insuper et duo filii tui mortui sunt , Ophni et Phinees , et arca Dei capta est .
ወአውሥአ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ ወይቤሎ ፡ ጐዩ ፡ ሰብአ ፡ እስራኤል ፡ እምቅድመ ፡ ገጾሙ ፡ ስኢሎፍሊ ፡ ወኮነ ፡ ዐቢይ ፡ ቀትል ፡ ላዕለ ፡ ሕዝብ ፡ ወሞቱ ፡ ክልኤሆሙ ፡ ደቂቅከ ፡ ወነሥእዋ ፡ ለታቦተ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ።
He who brought the news answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and God’s ark has been captured.”
4:18 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיְהִ֞י כְּהַזְכִּיר֣וֹ ׀ אֶת ־אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיִּפֹּ֣ל מֵֽעַל ־הַ֠כִּסֵּ֠א אֲחֹ֨רַנִּ֜ית בְּעַ֣ד ׀ יַ֣ד הַשַּׁ֗עַר וַתִּשָּׁבֵ֤ר מַפְרַקְתּוֹ֙ וַיָּמֹ֔ת כִּֽי ־זָקֵ֥ן הָאִ֖ישׁ וְכָבֵ֑ד וְה֛וּא שָׁפַ֥ט אֶת ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה ׃
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἐμνήσθη τῆς κιβωτοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἔπεσεν ἀπὸ τοῦ δίφρου ὀπισθίως ἐχόμενος τῆς πύλης καὶ συνετρίβη ὁ νῶτος αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέθανεν ὅτι πρεσβύτης ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ βαρύς καὶ αὐτὸς ἔκρινεν τὸν Ισραηλ εἴκοσι ἔτη
Cumque ille nominasset arcam Dei , cecidit de sella retrorsum juxta ostium , et fractis cervicibus mortuus est . Senex enim erat vir et grandaevus : et ipse judicavit Israël quadraginta annis .
ወእምዝ ፡ ተዘከራ ፡ ለታቦተ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ወወድቀ ፡ እምውስተ ፡ መንበሩ ፡ ድኅሪተ ፡ ኀበ ፡ ኆኀት ፡ [ወተሰብረ ፡ ዘባኑ ፡] ወሞተ ፡ እስመ ፡ ልሂቅ ፡ ብእሲሁ ፡ ወክቡድ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ወኰነኖሙ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ለእስራኤል ፡ ፵ዓመተ ።
When he made mention of God’s ark, Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.
4:19 ⧉ ⤴︎ וְכַלָּת֣וֹ אֵשֶׁת ־פִּֽינְחָס֮ הָרָ֣ה לָלַת֒ וַתִּשְׁמַ֣ע אֶת ־הַשְּׁמוּעָ֗ה אֶל ־הִלָּקַח֙ אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וּמֵ֥ת חָמִ֖יהָ וְאִישָׁ֑הּ וַתִּכְרַ֣ע וַתֵּ֔לֶד כִּֽי ־נֶהֶפְכ֥וּ עָלֶ֖יהָ צִרֶֽיהָ ׃
καὶ νύμφη αὐτοῦ γυνὴ Φινεες συνειληφυῖα τοῦ τεκεῖν καὶ ἤκουσεν τὴν ἀγγελίαν ὅτι ἐλήμφθη ἡ κιβωτὸς τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ὅτι τέθνηκεν ὁ πενθερὸς αὐτῆς καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς καὶ ὤκλασεν καὶ ἔτεκεν ὅτι ἐπεστράφησαν ἐπ’ αὐτὴν ὠδῖνες αὐτῆς
Nurus autem ejus , uxor Phinees , praegnans erat , vicinaque partui : et audito nuntio quod capta esset arca Dei , et mortuus esset socer suus et vir suus , incurvavit se et peperit : irruerant enim in eam dolores subiti .
ወመርዓቱኒ ፡ ብእሲተ ፡ ፊንሐስ ፡ ሀስወት ፡ ትወልድ ፡ ወሶበ ፡ ሰምዐት ፡ ከመ ፡ ነሥእዋ ፡ ለታቦተ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ወከመ ፡ ሞተ ፡ ሐሙሃ ፡ በከየት ፡ ወእምዝ ፡ ወለደት ፡ ወተመይጠ ፡ ላዕሌሃ ፡ ሕማማ ።
His daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to giving birth. When she heard the news that God’s ark was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth; for her pains came on her.
4:20 ⧉ ⤴︎ וּכְעֵ֣ת מוּתָ֗הּ וַתְּדַבֵּ֙רְנָה֙ הַנִּצָּב֣וֹת עָלֶ֔יהָ אַל ־תִּֽירְאִ֖י כִּ֣י בֵ֣ן יָלָ֑דְתְּ וְלֹ֥א עָנְתָ֖ה וְלֹא ־שָׁ֥תָה לִבָּֽהּ ׃
καὶ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ αὐτῆς ἀποθνῄσκει καὶ εἶπον αὐτῇ αἱ γυναῖκες αἱ παρεστηκυῖαι αὐτῇ μὴ φοβοῦ ὅτι υἱὸν τέτοκας καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη καὶ οὐκ ἐνόησεν ἡ καρδία αὐτῆς
In ipso autem momento mortis ejus , dixerunt ei quae stabant circa eam : Ne timeas , quia filium peperisti . Quae non respondit eis , neque animadvertit .
ወሞተት ፡ በእማንቱ ፡ መዋዕል ፡ ወይቤላሃ ፡ አንስት ፡ እለ ፡ ይቀውማ ፡ ኀቤሃ ፡ ኢትፍርሂ ፡ እስመ ፡ ወልደ ፡ ወለድኪ ፡ ወኢያውሥአቶን ፡ ወኢያእመረ ፡ ልበ ።
About the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.” But she didn’t answer, neither did she regard it.
4:21 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַתִּקְרָ֣א לַנַּ֗עַר אִֽיכָבוֹד֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר גָּלָ֥ה כָב֖וֹד מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֶל ־הִלָּקַח֙ אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וְאֶל ־חָמִ֖יהָ וְאִישָֽׁהּ ׃
καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ παιδάριον Οὐαὶ βαρχαβωθ ὑπὲρ τῆς κιβωτοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ὑπὲρ τοῦ πενθεροῦ αὐτῆς καὶ ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς
Et vocabit puerum Ichabod , dicens : Translata est gloria de Israël , quia capta est arca Dei , et pro socero suo et pro viro suo ;
ወሰመይዎ ፡ ለውእቱ ፡ ሕፃን ፡ ዌቦርኮኤቦት ፡ በእንተ ፡ ታቦተ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ወበእንተ ፡ ሐሙሃ ፡ ወበእንተ ፡ ምታ ።
She named the child Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” because God’s ark was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
4:22 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַתֹּ֕אמֶר גָּלָ֥ה כָב֖וֹד מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּ֥י נִלְקַ֖ח אֲר֥וֹן הָאֱלֹהִֽים ׃ {פ}
καὶ εἶπαν ἀπῴκισται δόξα Ισραηλ ἐν τῷ λημφθῆναι τὴν κιβωτὸν κυρίου
et ait : Translata est gloria ab Israël , eo quod capta esset arca Dei .
ጠይቤሉ ፡ ፈለሰ ፡ ክብሮሙ ፡ ለእስራኤል ፡ እስመ ፡ ነሥእዋ ፡ ለታቦተ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ።
She said, “The glory has departed from Israel; for God’s ark has been taken.”
