14:1 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיַּ֤עַשׂ אָסָא֙ הַטּ֣וֹב וְהַיָּשָׁ֔ר בְּעֵינֵ֖י יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָֽיו ׃
καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ καλὸν καὶ τὸ εὐθὲς ἐνώπιον κυρίου θεοῦ αὐτοῦ
Dormivit autem Abia cum patribus suis , et sepelierunt eum in civitate David : regnavitque Asa filius ejus pro eo , in cujus diebus quievit terra annis decem .
ወነግሠ ፡ አሣ ፡ ወልዱ ፡ እምድኅሬሁ ፡ ወበመዋዕሊሁ ፡ ለአሣ ፡ ሀድአት ፡ ወአርመመት ፡ ምድረ ፡ ይሁዳ ፡ ዓሠርተ ፡ ዓመተ ።
So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in David’s city; and Asa his son reigned in his place. In his days, the land was quiet ten years.
14:2 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיָּ֛סַר אֶת ־מִזְבְּח֥וֹת הַנֵּכָ֖ר וְהַבָּמ֑וֹת וַיְשַׁבֵּר֙ אֶת ־הַמַּצֵּב֔וֹת וַיְגַדַּ֖ע אֶת ־הָאֲשֵׁרִֽים ׃
καὶ ἀπέστησεν τὰ θυσιαστήρια τῶν ἀλλοτρίων καὶ τὰ ὑψηλὰ καὶ συνέτριψεν τὰς στήλας καὶ ἐξέκοψεν τὰ ἄλση
Fecit autem Asa quod bonum et placitum erat in conspectu Dei sui , et subvertit altaria peregrini cultus , et excelsa .
ወገብረ ፡ ሠናየ ፡ ወረትዐ ፡ በቅድመ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ አምላኩ ።
Asa did that which was good and right in Yahweh his God’s eyes,
14:3 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לִֽיהוּדָ֔ה לִדְר֕וֹשׁ אֶת ־יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם וְלַעֲשׂ֖וֹת הַתּוֹרָ֥ה וְהַמִּצְוָֽה ׃
καὶ εἶπεν τῷ Ιουδα ἐκζητῆσαι τὸν κύριον θεὸν τῶν πατέρων αὐτῶν καὶ ποιῆσαι τὸν νόμον καὶ τὰς ἐντολάς
Et confregit statuas , lucosque succidit :
ወነሠተ ፡ ቤተ ፡ ምሥዋዐ ፡ ነኪር ፡ ወዘአውግር ፡ ወቀጥቀጠ ፡ ኵሎ ፡ ግልፎሆሙ ፡ ወገዘመ ፡ ኵሎ ፡ አእዋሚሆሙ ።
for he took away the foreign altars and the high places, broke down the pillars, cut down the Asherah poles,
14:4 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיָּ֙סַר֙ מִכׇּל ־עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה אֶת ־הַבָּמ֖וֹת וְאֶת ־הַחַמָּנִ֑ים וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה לְפָנָֽיו ׃
καὶ ἀπέστησεν ἀπὸ πασῶν τῶν πόλεων Ιουδα τὰ θυσιαστήρια καὶ τὰ εἴδωλα καὶ εἰρήνευσεν
et praecepit Judae ut quaereret Dominum Deum patrum suorum , et faceret legem , et universa mandata :
ወይቤሎሙ ፡ ለሕዝበ ፡ ይሁዳ ፡ ከመ ፡ ይኅሥሥዎ ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር ፡ አምላከ ፡ አበዊሆሙ ፡ ወከመ ፡ ይግበሩ ፡ ሕገ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ወትእዛዛቲሁ ።
and commanded Judah to seek Yahweh, the God of their fathers, and to obey his law and command.
14:5 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּ֛בֶן עָרֵ֥י מְצוּרָ֖ה בִּֽיהוּדָ֑ה כִּֽי ־שָׁקְטָ֣ה הָאָ֗רֶץ וְאֵין ־עִמּ֤וֹ מִלְחָמָה֙ בַּשָּׁנִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה כִּֽי ־הֵנִ֥יחַ יְהֹוָ֖ה לֽוֹ ׃
πόλεις τειχήρεις ἐν γῇ Ιουδα ὅτι εἰρήνευσεν ἡ γῆ καὶ οὐκ ἦν αὐτῷ πόλεμος ἐν τοῖς ἔτεσιν τούτοις ὅτι κατέπαυσεν αὐτῷ κύριος
et abstulit de cunctis urbibus Juda aras et fana , et regnavit in pace .
ወአግኃሠ ፡ ወነሠተ ፡ እምኵሉ ፡ አህጉረ ፡ ይሁዳ ፡ ኵሎ ፡ አብያተ ፡ መሥዋዕት ፡ ዘነኪር ፡ ወግልፎሆሙ ፡ ወነበራ ፡ በሰላም ፡ ኵሎን ፡ አህጉር ፡ ጽኑዓት ፡ ወምድረ ፡ ይሁዳ ፡ እስመ ፡ አርመመት ፡ ምድር ፡ ወአዕረፈት ።
Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the sun images; and the kingdom was quiet before him.
14:6 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לִיהוּדָ֜ה נִבְנֶ֣ה ׀ אֶת ־הֶעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֗לֶּה וְנָסֵ֨ב חוֹמָ֣ה וּמִגְדָּלִים֮ דְּלָתַ֣יִם וּבְרִיחִים֒ עוֹדֶ֨נּוּ הָאָ֜רֶץ לְפָנֵ֗ינוּ כִּ֤י דָרַ֙שְׁנוּ֙ אֶת ־יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ דָּרַ֕שְׁנוּ וַיָּ֥נַֽח ־לָ֖נוּ מִסָּבִ֑יב וַיִּבְנ֖וּ וַיַּצְלִֽיחוּ ׃ {פ}
καὶ εἶπεν τῷ Ιουδα οἰκοδομήσωμεν τὰς πόλεις ταύτας καὶ ποιήσωμεν τείχη καὶ πύργους καὶ πύλας καὶ μοχλοὺς ἐν ᾧ τῆς γῆς κυριεύσομεν ὅτι καθὼς ἐξεζητήσαμεν κύριον θεὸν ἡμῶν ἐξεζήτησεν ἡμᾶς καὶ κατέπαυσεν ἡμᾶς κυκλόθεν καὶ εὐόδωσεν ἡμῖν
Aedificavit quoque urbes munitas in Juda , quia quietus erat , et nulla temporibus ejus bella surrexerant , pacem Domino largiente .
ወአልቦ ፡ ዘይትቃተሎሙ ፡ በውእቱ ፡ መዋዕል ፡ እስመ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ አዕረፎሙ ።
He built fortified cities in Judah; for the land was quiet, and he had no war in those years, because Yahweh had given him rest.
14:7 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיְהִ֣י לְאָסָ֗א חַ֘יִל֮ נֹשֵׂ֣א צִנָּ֣ה וָרֹ֒מַח֒ מִֽיהוּדָה֙ שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֣וֹת אֶ֔לֶף {ס} וּמִבִּנְיָמִ֗ן נֹשְׂאֵ֤י מָגֵן֙ וְדֹ֣רְכֵי קֶ֔שֶׁת מָאתַ֥יִם וּשְׁמוֹנִ֖ים אָ֑לֶף כׇּל ־אֵ֖לֶּה גִּבּ֥וֹרֵי חָֽיִל ׃
καὶ ἐγένετο τῷ Ασα δύναμις ὁπλοφόρων αἰρόντων θυρεοὺς καὶ δόρατα ἐν γῇ Ιουδα τριακόσιαι χιλιάδες καὶ ἐν γῇ Βενιαμιν πελτασταὶ καὶ τοξόται διακόσιαι καὶ πεντήκοντα χιλιάδες πάντες οὗτοι πολεμισταὶ δυνάμεως
Dixit autem Judae : Aedificemus civitates istas , et vallemus muris , et roboremus turribus , et portis , et seris , donec a bellis quieta sunt omnia , eo quod quaesierimus Dominum Deum patrum nostrorum , et dederit nobis pacem per gyrum . Aedificaverunt igitur , et nullum in exstruendo impedimentum fuit .
ወይቤሎሙ ፡ ለሕዝበ ፡ ይሁዳ ፡ ንሕንጽ ፡ እላንተ ፡ አህጉረ ፡ ወንግበር ፡ ሎቶን ፡ አረፋተ ፡ ወማኅፈደ ፡ ወአናቅጸ ፡ ወመናግሥተ ፡ እለ ፡ ቦሙ ፡ ንሰፍና ፡ ለምድር ፡ እስመ ፡ በከመ ፡ ኃሠሥናሁ ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር ፡ አምላክነ ፡ ውእቱኒ ፡ ኃሠሠነ ፡ ወአዕረፈነ ፡ እምዓውድነ ፡ ወተመጠወነ ።
For he said to Judah, “Let’s build these cities and make walls around them, with towers, gates, and bars. The land is yet before us, because we have sought Yahweh our God. We have sought him, and he has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered.
14:8 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיֵּצֵ֨א אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם זֶ֣רַח הַכּוּשִׁ֗י בְּחַ֙יִל֙ אֶ֣לֶף אֲלָפִ֔ים וּמַרְכָּב֖וֹת שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֑וֹת וַיָּבֹ֖א עַד ־מָרֵשָֽׁה ׃
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς Ζαρε ὁ Αἰθίοψ ἐν δυνάμει ἐν χιλίαις χιλιάσιν καὶ ἅρμασιν τριακοσίοις καὶ ἦλθεν ἕως Μαρισα
Habuit autem Asa in exercitu suo portantium scuta et hastas de Juda trecenta millia , de Benjamin vero scutariorum et sagittariorum ducenta octoginta millia : omnes isti viri fortissimi .
ወኮኑ ፡ ሎቱ ፡ ለአሣ ፡ ሠራዊት ፡ ጽኑዓን ፡ ወመስተቃትላን ፡ እለ ፡ ይክሉ ፡ ፀዊረ ፡ ወልታ ፡ ወኲናት ፡ በምድረ ፡ ይሁዳ ፡ ሠላሳ ፡ እልፍ ፡ ወበምድረ ፡ ብንያም ፡ ወጻፍያን ፡ ወነዳፍያን ፡ ዕሥራ ፡ ወኃምስቱ ፡ እልፍ ፡ እሉ ፡ ኵሎሙ ፡ እደው ፡ ጸናፅት ፡ ወመስተቃትላን ።
Asa had an army of three hundred thousand out of Judah who bore bucklers and spears, and two hundred eighty thousand out of Benjamin who bore shields and drew bows. All these were mighty men of valor.
14:9 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיֵּצֵ֥א אָסָ֖א לְפָנָ֑יו וַיַּֽעַרְכוּ֙ מִלְחָמָ֔ה בְּגֵ֥יא צְפַ֖תָה לְמָרֵשָֽׁה ׃
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ασα εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῷ καὶ παρετάξατο πόλεμον ἐν τῇ φάραγγι κατὰ βορρᾶν Μαρισης
Egressus est autem contra eos Zara Aethiops cum exercitu suo , decies centena millia , et curribus trecentis : et venit usque Maresa .
ወወፅአ ፡ ላዕሌሁ ፡ ዝሪ ፡ ንጉሠ ፡ ኢትዮጵያ ፡ በሠራዊት ፡ ጽኑዓን ፡ በምእት ፡ እልፍ ፡ ወበሠለስቱ ፡ ምእት ፡ ሠረገላት ፡ ወበጽሀሐ ፡ እስከ ፡ ብሔረ ፡ ማሬሳ ።
Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million troops and three hundred chariots, and he came to Mareshah.
14:10 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּקְרָ֨א אָסָ֜א אֶל ־יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָיו֮ וַיֹּאמַר֒ יְהֹוָ֗ה אֵֽין ־עִמְּךָ֤ לַעְזֹר֙ בֵּ֥ין רַב֙ לְאֵ֣ין כֹּ֔חַ עׇזְרֵ֜נוּ יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ כִּֽי ־עָלֶ֣יךָ נִשְׁעַ֔נּוּ וּבְשִׁמְךָ֣ בָ֔אנוּ עַל ־הֶהָמ֖וֹן הַזֶּ֑ה יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ אַ֔תָּה אַל ־יַעְצֹ֥ר עִמְּךָ֖ אֱנֽוֹשׁ ׃ {ס}
καὶ ἐβόησεν Ασα πρὸς κύριον θεὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν κύριε οὐκ ἀδυνατεῖ παρὰ σοὶ σῴζειν ἐν πολλοῖς καὶ ἐν ὀλίγοις κατίσχυσον ἡμᾶς κύριε ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν ὅτι ἐπὶ σοὶ πεποίθαμεν καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί σου ἤλθαμεν ἐπὶ τὸ πλῆθος τὸ πολὺ τοῦτο κύριε ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν μὴ κατισχυσάτω πρὸς σὲ ἄνθρωπος
Porro Asa perrexit obviam ei , et instruxit aciem ad bellum in valle Sephata , quae est juxta Maresa :
ወወፅአ ፡ አሣ ፡ ንጉሠ ፡ ይሁዳ ፡ ለቀበላሁ ፡ ወተዓየነ ፡ ለተቃትሎ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ፈለግ ፡ ዘአንጻረ ፡ ደቡቡ ፡ ለውእቱ ፡ ፈለገ ፡ ብሔረ ፡ ማሬሳ ።
Then Asa went out to meet him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.
14:11 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּגֹּ֤ף יְהֹוָה֙ אֶת ־הַכּוּשִׁ֔ים לִפְנֵ֥י אָסָ֖א וְלִפְנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ הַכּוּשִֽׁים ׃
καὶ ἐπάταξεν κύριος τοὺς Αἰθίοπας ἐναντίον Ιουδα καὶ ἔφυγον οἱ Αἰθίοπες
et invocavit Dominum Deum , et ait : Domine , non est apud te ulla distantia , utrum in paucis auxilieris , an in pluribus . Adjuva nos , Domine Deus noster : in te enim , et in tuo nomine habentes fiduciam , venimus contra hanc multitudinem . Domine , Deus noster tu es : non praevaleat contra te homo .
ወጸርሐ ፡ አሣ ፡ ኀበ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ አምላኩ ፡ እንዘ ፡ ይብል ፡ እግዚኦ ፡ ኢይሰአን ፡ በኀቤከ ፡ አድኅኖ ፡ በብዙኅኒ ፡ ወበኅዳጥኒ ፡ አጽንዓነ ፡ እግዚኦ ፡ አምላክነ ፡ እስመ ፡ ብከ ፡ ተወከልነ ፡ ወበስምከ ፡ መጻእነ ፡ ላዕሌሆሙ ፡ ላዕለ ፡ እሉ ፡ ሠራዊት ፡ ዘአልቦ ፡ ኍልቊ ፡ እግዚኦ ፡ አምላክነ ፡ ኢይጽንዓነ ፡ ሰብእ ፡ በቅድሜከ ።
Asa cried to Yahweh his God, and said, “Yahweh, there is no one besides you to help, between the mighty and him who has no strength. Help us, Yahweh our God; for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. Yahweh, you are our God. Don’t let man prevail against you.”
14:12 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּרְדְּפֵ֨ם אָסָ֜א וְהָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר ־עִמּוֹ֮ עַד ־לִגְרָר֒ וַיִּפֹּ֤ל מִכּוּשִׁים֙ לְאֵ֣ין לָהֶ֣ם מִֽחְיָ֔ה כִּֽי ־נִשְׁבְּר֥וּ לִפְנֵי ־יְהֹוָ֖ה וְלִפְנֵ֣י מַחֲנֵ֑הוּ וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ שָׁלָ֖ל הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד ׃
καὶ κατεδίωξεν Ασα καὶ ὁ λαὸς αὐτοῦ ἕως Γεδωρ καὶ ἔπεσον Αἰθίοπες ὥστε μὴ εἶναι ἐν αὐτοῖς περιποίησιν ὅτι συνετρίβησαν ἐνώπιον κυρίου καὶ ἐναντίον τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐσκύλευσαν σκῦλα πολλά
Exterruit itaque Dominus Aethiopes coram Asa et Juda : fugeruntque Aethiopes .
ወቀተሎሙ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ለሕዝበ ፡ ኢትዮጵያ ፡ በቅድመ ፡ ንጉሥ ፡ አሣ ፡ ወበቅድመ ፡ ሕዝበ ፡ ይሁዳ ፡ ወተሰብሩ ፡ ወጐዩ ፡ ሰብአ ፡ ኢትዮጵያ ።
So Yahweh struck the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.
14:13 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיַּכּ֗וּ אֵ֤ת כׇּל ־הֶעָרִים֙ סְבִיב֣וֹת גְּרָ֔ר כִּי ־הָיָ֥ה פַחַד ־יְהֹוָ֖ה עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וַיָּבֹ֙זּוּ֙ אֶת ־כׇּל ־הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים כִּֽי ־בִזָּ֥ה רַבָּ֖ה הָיְתָ֥ה בָהֶֽם ׃
καὶ ἐξέκοψαν τὰς κώμας αὐτῶν κύκλῳ Γεδωρ ὅτι ἐγενήθη ἔκστασις κυρίου ἐπ’ αὐτούς καὶ ἐσκύλευσαν πάσας τὰς πόλεις αὐτῶν ὅτι πολλὰ σκῦλα ἐγενήθη αὐτοῖς
Et persecutus est eos Asa , et populus qui cum eo erat , usque Gerara : et ruerunt Aethiopes usque ad internecionem , quia Domino caedente contriti sunt , et exercitu illius praeliante . Tulerunt ergo spolia multa ,
ወሰደዶሙ ፡ አሣ ፡ ንጉሥ ፡ ወሕዝቡኒ ፡ ድኅሬሆሙ ፡ እስከ ፡ ብሔረ ፡ ጌዶር ፡ ወድቁ ፡ ወተቀትሉ ፡ ሰብአ ፡ ኢትዮጵያ ፡ እስከ ፡ ኃጥኡ ፡ ዝክረ ፡ እስመ ፡ ተቀጥቀጡ ፡ በቅድመ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ወበቅድመ ፡ ኃይሉ ፡ ወማህረክዎሙ ፡ ምህርካ ፡ ብዙኀ ፡ ወጠፍኡ ።
Asa and the people who were with him pursued them to Gerar. So many of the Ethiopians fell that they could not recover themselves, for they were destroyed before Yahweh and before his army. Judah’s army carried away very much booty.
14:14 ⧉ ⤴︎ וְגַם ־אׇהֳלֵ֥י מִקְנֶ֖ה הִכּ֑וּ וַיִּשְׁבּ֨וּ צֹ֤אן לָרֹב֙ וּגְמַלִּ֔ים וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ יְרוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם ׃ {ס}
καί γε σκηνὰς κτήσεων τοὺς Αμαζονεῖς ἐξέκοψαν καὶ ἔλαβον πρόβατα πολλὰ καὶ καμήλους καὶ ἐπέστρεψαν εἰς Ιερουσαλημ
et percusserunt civitates omnes per circuitum Gerarae : grandis quippe cunctos terror invaserat : et diripuerunt urbes , et multam praedam asportaverunt .
ወኀልቁ ፡ አዕፃዳቲሆሙ ፡ እለ ፡ አድያማተ ፡ ጌዶር ፡ እስመ ፡ ኮነ ፡ ድንጋፄ ፡ እምኀበ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ላዕሌሆሙ ፡ ወበርበሩ ፡ ኵሎ ፡ አህጉሪሆሙ ፡ ወማህረኩ ፡ ኵሎ ፡ እንስሳሆሙ ፡ ወኵሎ ፡ ዘአጥረዩ ፡ ሎሙ ፡ ነሥኡ ።
They struck all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of Yahweh came on them. They plundered all the cities, for there was much plunder in them.
14:15 ⧉ ⤴︎ — — Sed et caulas ovium destruentes , tulerunt pecorum infinitam multitudinem , et camelorum : reversique sunt in Jerusalem .
ወእስከ ፡ ተዓይነ ፡ ጥሪቶሙ ፡ ዘእምዜናውያን ፡ ወአኃለቁ ፡ ወነሥኡ ፡ ብዙኀነ ፡ መራዕየ ፡ አባግዕ ፡ ወአጣሊ ፡ ወአግማለ ፡ ወተመይጡ ፡ ብሔረ ፡ ኢየሩሳሌም ።
They also struck the tents of those who had livestock, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, then returned to Jerusalem.
