1:1
דִּבְרֵי֙ קֹהֶ֣לֶת בֶּן־דָּוִ֔ד מֶ֖לֶךְ בִּירוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃
ῥήματα Ἐκκλησιαστοῦ υἱοῦ Δαυιδ βασιλέως Ισραηλ ἐν Ιερουσαλημ
Verba Ecclesiastae, filii David, regis Jerusalem.
ቃለ፡ ሰሎሞን፡ መክብብ፡ ወልደ፡ ዳዊት፡ ንጉሠ፡ እስራኤል፡ በኢየሩሳሌም።
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:
1:2
הֲבֵ֤ל הֲבָלִים֙ אָמַ֣ר קֹהֶ֔לֶת הֲבֵ֥ל הֲבָלִ֖ים הַכֹּ֥ל הָֽבֶל׃
ματαιότης ματαιοτήτων εἶπεν ὁ Ἐκκλησιαστής ματαιότης ματαιοτήτων τὰ πάντα ματαιότης
Vanitas vanitatum, dixit Ecclesiastes ; vanitas vanitatum, et omnia vanitas.
ከንቱ፡ ከንቱ፡ ይቤ፡ መክብብ፡ ኵሉ፡ ከንቱ።
“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”
1:3
מַה־יִּתְר֖וֹן לָֽאָדָ֑ם בְּכׇ֨ל־עֲמָל֔וֹ שֶֽׁיַּעֲמֹ֖ל תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃
τίς περισσεία τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐν παντὶ μόχθῳ αὐτοῦ ᾧ μοχθεῖ ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον
Quid habet amplius homo de universo labore suo quo laborat sub sole ?
ምንት፡ ፍድፋዴሁ፡ ለሰብእ፡ በኵሉ፡ ፃማሁ፡ ዘይፃሙ፡ እምታሕተ፡ ፀሐይ።
What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?
1:4
דּ֤וֹר הֹלֵךְ֙ וְד֣וֹר בָּ֔א וְהָאָ֖רֶץ לְעוֹלָ֥ם עֹמָֽדֶת׃
γενεὰ πορεύεται καὶ γενεὰ ἔρχεται καὶ ἡ γῆ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἕστηκεν
Generatio praeterit, et generatio advenit ; terra autem in aeternum stat.
ትውልድ፡ የኃልፍ፡ ትውልድ፡ ይመጽእ፡ ወምድርሰ፡ ለዓለም፡ ትቀውም።
One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.
1:5
וְזָרַ֥ח הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ וּבָ֣א הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְאֶ֨ל־מְקוֹמ֔וֹ שׁוֹאֵ֛ף זוֹרֵ֥חַֽ ה֖וּא שָֽׁם׃
καὶ ἀνατέλλει ὁ ἥλιος καὶ δύνει ὁ ἥλιος καὶ εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ ἕλκει
Oritur sol et occidit, et ad locum suum revertitur ; ibique renascens,
ይሠርቅ፡ ፀሐይ፡ ወየዐርብ፡ ፀሐይ፡ ወውስተ፡ መካኑ፡ ይገብእ፡ እንዘ፡ ይሠርቅ፡ ውእቱ፡ ህየ፡ ይገብእ፡ በይምን፡ ወየዐውድ፡ መንገለ፡ ሰሜን።
The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.
1:6
הוֹלֵךְ֙ אֶל־דָּר֔וֹם וְסוֹבֵ֖ב אֶל־צָפ֑וֹן סוֹבֵ֤ב׀סֹבֵב֙ הוֹלֵ֣ךְ הָר֔וּחַ וְעַל־סְבִיבֹתָ֖יו שָׁ֥ב הָרֽוּחַ׃
ἀνατέλλων αὐτὸς ἐκεῖ πορεύεται πρὸς νότον καὶ κυκλοῖ πρὸς βορρᾶν κυκλοῖ κυκλῶν πορεύεται τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἐπὶ κύκλους αὐτοῦ ἐπιστρέφει τὸ πνεῦμα
gyrat per meridiem, et flectitur ad aquilonem. Lustrans universa in circuitu pergit spiritus, et in circulos suos revertitur.
ዓውደ፡ የዓውድ፡ ወየሐውር፡ መንፈስ፡ ወበዑደቱ፡ ይገብእ፡ መንፈስ።
The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.
1:7
כׇּל־הַנְּחָלִים֙ הֹלְכִ֣ים אֶל־הַיָּ֔ם וְהַיָּ֖ם אֵינֶ֣נּוּ מָלֵ֑א אֶל־מְק֗וֹם שֶׁ֤הַנְּחָלִים֙ הֹֽלְכִ֔ים שָׁ֛ם הֵ֥ם שָׁבִ֖ים לָלָֽכֶת׃
πάντες οἱ χείμαρροι πορεύονται εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ ἡ θάλασσα οὐκ ἔσται ἐμπιμπλαμένη εἰς τόπον οὗ οἱ χείμαρροι πορεύονται ἐκεῖ αὐτοὶ ἐπιστρέφουσιν τοῦ πορευθῆναι
Omnia flumina intrant in mare, et mare non redundat ; ad locum unde exeunt flumina revertuntur ut iterum fluant.
ወኵሎሙ፡ ውሒዛት፡ የሐውሩ፡ ውስተ፡ ባሕር፡ ወባሕርኒ፡ ኢኮነት፡ እንተ፡ ትመልእ፡ ውስተ፡ መካና።
All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.
1:8
כׇּל־הַדְּבָרִ֣ים יְגֵעִ֔ים לֹא־יוּכַ֥ל אִ֖ישׁ לְדַבֵּ֑ר לֹא־תִשְׂבַּ֥ע עַ֙יִן֙ לִרְא֔וֹת וְלֹא־תִמָּלֵ֥א אֹ֖זֶן מִשְּׁמֹֽעַ׃
πάντες οἱ λόγοι ἔγκοποι οὐ δυνήσεται ἀνὴρ τοῦ λαλεῖν καὶ οὐκ ἐμπλησθήσεται ὀφθαλμὸς τοῦ ὁρᾶν καὶ οὐ πληρωθήσεται οὖς ἀπὸ ἀκροάσεως
Cunctae res difficiles ; non potest eas homo explicare sermone. Non saturatur oculus visu, nec auris auditu impletur.
ወእደ፡ የሐውሩ፡ አፍላግ፡ ህየ፡ ካዕበ፡ ይትመየጡ፡ ለሐዊር።
All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
1:9
מַה־שֶּֽׁהָיָה֙ ה֣וּא שֶׁיִּהְיֶ֔ה וּמַה־שֶּׁנַּֽעֲשָׂ֔ה ה֖וּא שֶׁיֵּעָשֶׂ֑ה וְאֵ֥ין כׇּל־חָדָ֖שׁ תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃
τί τὸ γεγονός αὐτὸ τὸ γενησόμενον καὶ τί τὸ πεποιημένον αὐτὸ τὸ ποιηθησόμενον καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν πᾶν πρόσφατον ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον
Quid est quod fuit ? Ipsum quod futurum est. Quid est quod factum est ? Ipsum quod faciendum est.
ኵሉ፡ ቃል፡ ዘበሕማም፡ ኢይክል፡ ብእሲ፡ ለተናግሮ፡ ወኢይጸግብ፡ ዓይን፡ በርእይ፡ ወኢይመልእ፡ ዕዝን፡ በአጽምኦ።
That which has been is that which shall be, and that which has been done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun.
1:10
יֵ֥שׁ דָּבָ֛ר שֶׁיֹּאמַ֥ר רְאֵה־זֶ֖ה חָדָ֣שׁ ה֑וּא כְּבָר֙ הָיָ֣ה לְעֹֽלָמִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה מִלְּפָנֵֽנוּ׃
ὃς λαλήσει καὶ ἐρεῖ ἰδὲ τοῦτο καινόν ἐστιν ἤδη γέγονεν ἐν τοῖς αἰῶσιν τοῖς γενομένοις ἀπὸ ἔμπροσθεν ἡμῶν
Nihil sub sole novum, nec valet quisquam dicere : Ecce hoc recens est : jam enim praecessit in saeculis quae fuerunt ante nos.
ወምንት፡ ውእቱ፡ ገብረ፡ እምዘተገብረ፡ ወምንት፡ ውእቱ፡ ዘኮነ፡ እምዘኮነ፡ ወአልቦ፡ ምንትኒ፡ ዘተገብረ፡ በመትሕተ፡ ፀሐይ።
Is there a thing of which it may be said, “Behold, this is new”? It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.
1:11
אֵ֥ין זִכְר֖וֹן לָרִאשֹׁנִ֑ים וְגַ֨ם לָאַחֲרֹנִ֜ים שֶׁיִּהְי֗וּ לֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֤ה לָהֶם֙ זִכָּר֔וֹן עִ֥ם שֶׁיִּהְי֖וּ לָאַחֲרֹנָֽה׃ {פ}
οὐκ ἔστιν μνήμη τοῖς πρώτοις καί γε τοῖς ἐσχάτοις γενομένοις οὐκ ἔσται αὐτοῖς μνήμη μετὰ τῶν γενησομένων εἰς τὴν ἐσχάτην
Non est priorum memoria ; sed nec eorum quidem quae postea futura sunt erit recordatio apud eos qui futuri sunt in novissimo.
ዘይነብብ፡ ወይብል፡ ናሁ፡ ዝ፡ ሐዲስ፡ ውእቱ፡ ወናሁ፡ ተገብረ፡ ዓለም፡ እምዓለም፡ ዘኮነ፡ እምቅድሜነ።
There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.
1:12
אֲנִ֣י קֹהֶ֗לֶת הָיִ֥יתִי מֶ֛לֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בִּירוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃
ἐγὼ Ἐκκλησιαστὴς ἐγενόμην βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ Ισραηλ ἐν Ιερουσαλημ
Ego Ecclesiastes fui rex Israël in Jerusalem ;
አልቦሙ፡ ዝክር፡ ለቀደምት፡ ምስለ፡ ደኃርት፡ ወለእለ፡ ደኃርትኒ፡ ምስለ፡ ዘይትገበር፡ በደኃርት።
I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
1:13
וְנָתַ֣תִּי אֶת־לִבִּ֗י לִדְר֤וֹשׁ וְלָתוּר֙ בַּֽחׇכְמָ֔ה עַ֛ל כׇּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם ה֣וּא׀ עִנְיַ֣ן רָ֗ע נָתַ֧ן אֱלֹהִ֛ים לִבְנֵ֥י הָאָדָ֖ם לַעֲנ֥וֹת בּֽוֹ׃
καὶ ἔδωκα τὴν καρδίαν μου τοῦ ἐκζητῆσαι καὶ τοῦ κατασκέψασθαι ἐν τῇ σοφίᾳ περὶ πάντων τῶν γινομένων ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανόν ὅτι περισπασμὸν πονηρὸν ἔδωκεν ὁ θεὸς τοῖς υἱοῖς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τοῦ περισπᾶσθαι ἐν αὐτῷ
et proposui in animo meo quaerere et investigare sapienter de omnibus quae fiunt sub sole. Hanc occupationem pessimam dedit Deus filiis hominum, ut occuparentur in ea.
አነ፡ መክብብ፡ ኮንኩ፡ ንጉሠ፡ እስራኤል፡ በኢየሩሳሌም።
I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.
1:14
רָאִ֙יתִי֙ אֶת־כׇּל־הַֽמַּעֲשִׂ֔ים שֶֽׁנַּעֲשׂ֖וּ תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְהִנֵּ֥ה הַכֹּ֛ל הֶ֖בֶל וּרְע֥וּת רֽוּחַ׃
εἶδον σὺν πάντα τὰ ποιήματα τὰ πεποιημένα ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον καὶ ἰδοὺ τὰ πάντα ματαιότης καὶ προαίρεσις πνεύματος
Vidi cuncta quae fiunt sub sole, et ecce universa vanitas et afflictio spiritus.
ወወሀብኩ፡ ልብየ፡ ለኃሢሥ፡ ወለፈቲን፡ በጥበብ፡ በእንተ፡ ኵሉ፡ ዘተገብረ፡ መትሕተ፡ ፀሐይ፡ እስመ፡ ሥራኀ፡ እኩየ፡ ወሀበ፡ እግዚአብሔር፡ ለውሉደ፡ ሰብእ፡ ከመ፡ ይሥርኁ፡ ቦቱ።
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.
1:15
מְעֻוָּ֖ת לֹא־יוּכַ֣ל לִתְקֹ֑ן וְחֶסְר֖וֹן לֹא־יוּכַ֥ל לְהִמָּנֽוֹת׃
διεστραμμένον οὐ δυνήσεται τοῦ ἐπικοσμηθῆναι καὶ ὑστέρημα οὐ δυνήσεται τοῦ ἀριθμηθῆναι
Perversi difficile corriguntur, et stultorum infinitus est numerus.
ርኢኩ፡ ኵሎ፡ ፍጥረተ፡ ዘተገብረ፡ በመትሕተ፡ ፀሐይ፡ ወናሁ፡ ኵሉ፡ ከንቱ፡ ወፍትወተ፡ መንፈስ።
That which is crooked can’t be made straight; and that which is lacking can’t be counted.
1:16
דִּבַּ֨רְתִּי אֲנִ֤י עִם־לִבִּי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אֲנִ֗י הִנֵּ֨ה הִגְדַּ֤לְתִּי וְהוֹסַ֙פְתִּי֙ חׇכְמָ֔ה עַ֛ל כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־הָיָ֥ה לְפָנַ֖י עַל־יְרוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם וְלִבִּ֛י רָאָ֥ה הַרְבֵּ֖ה חׇכְמָ֥ה וָדָֽעַת׃
ἐλάλησα ἐγὼ ἐν καρδίᾳ μου τῷ λέγειν ἐγὼ ἰδοὺ ἐμεγαλύνθην καὶ προσέθηκα σοφίαν ἐπὶ πᾶσιν οἳ ἐγένοντο ἔμπροσθέν μου ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ καρδία μου εἶδεν πολλά σοφίαν καὶ γνῶσιν
Locutus sum in corde meo, dicens : Ecce magnus effectus sum, et praecessi omnes sapientia qui fuerunt ante me in Jerusalem ; et mens mea contemplata est multa sapienter, et didici.
ጠዋይ፡ ኢይክል፡ ረቲዐ፡ ወሕፁፅ፡ ኢይክል፡ ተኈልቆ።
I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”
1:17
וָאֶתְּנָ֤ה לִבִּי֙ לָדַ֣עַת חׇכְמָ֔ה וְדַ֥עַת הוֹלֵלֹ֖ת וְשִׂכְל֑וּת יָדַ֕עְתִּי שֶׁגַּם־זֶ֥ה ה֖וּא רַעְי֥וֹן רֽוּחַ׃
καὶ ἔδωκα καρδίαν μου τοῦ γνῶναι σοφίαν καὶ γνῶσιν παραβολὰς καὶ ἐπιστήμην ἔγνων ὅτι καί γε τοῦτ’ ἔστιν προαίρεσις πνεύματος
Dedique cor meum ut scirem prudentiam atque doctrinam, erroresque et stultitiam ; et agnovi quod in his quoque esset labor et afflictio spiritus :
ተናገርኩ፡ አነ፡ በልብየ፡ በብሂል፡ ወናሁ፡ አፈድፈድኩ፡ ወአዕበይኩ፡ ጥበበ፡ እምእለ፡ ኮኑ፡ እምቅድሜየ፡ በኢየሩሳሌም፡ ወልብየ፡ ርእየት፡ ብዙኀ፡ ጥበበ፡ ወአእምሮ።
I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.
1:18
כִּ֛י בְּרֹ֥ב חׇכְמָ֖ה רׇב־כָּ֑עַס וְיוֹסִ֥יף דַּ֖עַת יוֹסִ֥יף מַכְאֽוֹב׃
ὅτι ἐν πλήθει σοφίας πλῆθος γνώσεως καὶ ὁ προστιθεὶς γνῶσιν προσθήσει ἄλγημα
eo quod in multa sapientia multa sit indignatio ; et qui addit scientiam, addit et laborem.
ወወሀብኩ፡ ልብየ፡ ለአእምሮ፡ ወለጥበብ፡ ጥበበ፡ ወአእምሮ፡ ወምሳሌ፡ ወትምህርተ፡ አእመርኩ፡ እስመ፡ ዝኒ፡ ከንቱ፡ ወፍትወተ፡ መንፈስ።
For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
1:19———
እስመ፡ በብዝኀ፡ ጥብ፡ ብዙኅ፡ ኀዘን፡ ወዘአፈድፈደ፡ አእምሮ፡ አፈድፈደ፡ ሕማመ።
For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
