In that day Tobit remembered the money which he had left in trust with Gabael in Rages of Media,
4:2
καὶ εἶπεν ἐν ἑαυτῷ ἐγὼ ᾐτησάμην θάνατον τί οὐ καλῶ Τωβιαν τὸν υἱόν μου ἵνα αὐτῷ ὑποδείξω πρὶν ἀποθανεῖν με καὶ εἶπεν ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ᾐτησάμην θάνατον τί οὐχὶ καλῶ Τωβιαν τὸν υἱόν μου καὶ ὑποδείξω αὐτῷ περὶ τοῦ ἀργυρίου τούτου πρὶν ἀποθανεῖν με
dixitque ei : Audi, fili mi, verba oris mei, et ea in corde tuo quasi fundamentum construe.
ወሐለየ፡ ወይቤ፡ ናሁ፡ ሰአልኩ፡ ከመ፡ እሙት፡ ወለምንት፡ ኢይጼውዖ፡ ለወልድየ፡ ጦብያ፡ ከመ፡ እንግሮ፡ ዘእንበለ፡ እሙት።
and he said to himself, I have asked for death; why do I not call my son Tobias, that I may explain to him about the money before I die?
4:3
καὶ καλέσας αὐτὸν εἶπεν παιδίον ἐὰν ἀποθάνω θάψον με καὶ μὴ ὑπερίδῃς τὴν μητέρα σου τίμα αὐτὴν πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας τῆς ζωῆς σου καὶ ποίει τὸ ἀρεστὸν αὐτῇ καὶ μὴ λυπήσῃς αὐτήν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Τωβιαν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ θάψον με καλῶς καὶ τίμα τὴν μητέρα σου καὶ μὴ ἐγκαταλίπῃς αὐτὴν πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας τῆς ζωῆς αὐτῆς καὶ ποίει τὸ ἀρεστὸν ἐνώπιον αὐτῆς καὶ μὴ λυπήσῃς τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτῆς ἐν παντὶ πράγματι
Cum acceperit Deus animam meam, corpus meum sepeli : et honorem habebis matri tuæ omnibus diebus vitæ ejus :
ወጸውዖ፡ ወይቤሎ፡ ወልድየ፡ አመ፡ ሞትኩ፡ ቅበረኒ፡ በሠናይ፡ ወዕቀብ፡ እመከ፡ ወአክብራ፡ በኵሉ፡ መዋዕለ፡ ሕይወታ፡ ወግበር፡ ላቲ፡ ኵሎ፡ ዘፈቀደት፡ ወኢታኅዝና።
And he called him, and said, “My child, if I die, bury me. Don’t despise your mother. Honor her all the days of your life, and do that which is pleasing to her, and don’t grieve her.
4:4
μνήσθητι παιδίον ὅτι πολλοὺς κινδύνους ἑόρακεν ἐπὶ σοὶ ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ ὅταν ἀποθάνῃ θάψον αὐτὴν παρ’ ἐμοὶ ἐν ἑνὶ τάφῳ μνήσθητι αὐτῆς παιδίον ὅτι κινδύνους πολλοὺς ἑώρακεν ἐπὶ σοὶ ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ αὐτῆς καὶ ὅταν ἀποθάνῃ θάψον αὐτὴν παρ’ ἐμοὶ ἐν ἑνὶ τάφῳ
memor enim esse debes, quæ et quanta pericula passa sit propter te in utero suo.
ተዘከር፡ ወልድየ፡ ከመ፡ ብዙኃ፡ ሕማመ፡ ረከበት፡ ብከ፡ እንዘ፡ ሀሎከ፡ ውስተ፡ ከርሣ፡ ወእመ፡ ሞተት፡ ቅብራ፡ ምስሌየ፡ ውስተ፡ አሐዱ፡ መቃብር።
Remember, my child, that she has seen many dangers for you, when you were in her womb. When she is dead, bury her by me in one grave.
4:5
πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας παιδίον κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν μνημόνευε καὶ μὴ θελήσῃς ἁμαρτάνειν καὶ παραβῆναι τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ δικαιοσύνην ποίει πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας τῆς ζωῆς σου καὶ μὴ πορευθῇς ταῖς ὁδοῖς τῆς ἀδικίας καὶ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας σου παιδίον τοῦ κυρίου μνημόνευε καὶ μὴ θελήσῃς ἁμαρτεῖν καὶ παραβῆναι τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ δικαιοσύνας ποίει πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας τῆς ζωῆς σου καὶ μὴ πορευθῇς ταῖς ὁδοῖς τῆς ἀδικίας
Cum autem et ipsa compleverit tempus vitæ suæ, sepelias eam circa me.
ወበኵሉ፡ መዋዕል፡ ኦ፡ ወልድየ፡ ተዘከሮ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር፡ አምላክነ፡ ወኢትፍቅድ፡ አብሶ፡ ወክሂደ፡ ትእዛዙ፡ ወግበር፡ ጽድቀ፡ በኵሉ፡ መዋዕለ፡ ሕይወትከ፡ ወኢትሑር፡ በፍኖተ፡ ዓመፃ።
My child, be mindful of the Lord our God all your days, and don’t let your will be set to sin and to transgress his commandments: do righteousness all the days of your life, and don’t follow the ways of unrighteousness.
4:6
διότι ποιοῦντός σου τὴν ἀλήθειαν εὐοδίαι ἔσονται ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις σου διότι οἱ ποιοῦντες ἀλήθειαν εὐοδωθήσονται ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτῶν
Omnibus autem diebus vitæ tuæ in mente habeto Deum : et cave ne aliquando peccato consentias, et prætermittas præcepta Domini Dei nostri.
ወእምከመ፡ ገበርካ፡ ለጽድቅ፡ ትሤራህ፡ በኵሉ፡ ፍኖትከ፡ ወበኵሉ፡ ግብርከ፡ ዘገበርከ፡ ወከማሁ፡ ለኵሎሙ፡ እለ፡ ይገብርዋ፡ ለጽድቅ።
For if you do what is true, your deeds will prosperously succeed for you, and for all those who do righteousness.
4:7
καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς ποιοῦσι τὴν δικαιοσύνην ἐκ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων σοι ποίει ἐλεημοσύνην καὶ μὴ φθονεσάτω σου ὁ ὀφθαλμὸς ἐν τῷ ποιεῖν σε ἐλεημοσύνην μὴ ἀποστρέψῃς τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἀπὸ παντὸς πτωχοῦ καὶ ἀπὸ σοῦ οὐ μὴ ἀποστραφῇ τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς ποιοῦσιν δικαιοσύνην
Ex substantia tua fac eleemosynam, et noli avertere faciem tuam ab ullo paupere : ita enim fiet ut nec a te avertatur facies Domini.
ወእምንዋይከ፡ ግበር፡ ምጽዋተ፡ ወኢትደንግፅ፡ ዓይንከ፡ ሶበ፡ ትገብር፡ ምጽዋተ፡ ወኢትሚጥ፡ ገጸከ፡ እምነ፡ ነዳይ፡ ወእግዚአብሔር፡ ኢይመይጥ፡ ገጾ፡ እምኔከ።
Give alms from your possessions. When you give alms, don’t let your eye be envious. Don’t turn away your face from any poor man, and the face of God won’t be turned away from you.
4:8
ὡς σοὶ ὑπάρχει κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος ποίησον ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐλεημοσύνην ἐὰν ὀλίγον σοι ὑπάρχῃ κατὰ τὸ ὀλίγον μὴ φοβοῦ ποιεῖν ἐλεημοσύνην
Quomodo potueris, ita esto misericors.
ወአምጣነ፡ ትክል፡ መጠነ፡ ብከ፡ ግበር፡ ምጽዋተ፡ ወእመኒ፡ ውኁድ፡ ኢትደንግፅ፡ ለገቢረ፡ ምጽዋት።
As your possessions are, give alms of it according to your abundance. If you have little, don’t be afraid to give alms according to that little;
4:9
θέμα γὰρ ἀγαθὸν θησαυρίζεις σεαυτῷ εἰς ἡμέραν ἀνάγκης
Si multum tibi fuerit, abundanter tribue : si exiguum tibi fuerit, etiam exiguum libenter impertiri stude.
እስመ፡ ሠናየ፡ መዝገበ፡ ትዘግብ፡ ለከ።
for you lay up a good treasure for yourself against the day of necessity;
4:10
διότι ἐλεημοσύνη ἐκ θανάτου ῥύεται καὶ οὐκ ἐᾷ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὸ σκότος
Præmium enim bonum tibi thesaurizas in die necessitatis :
እስመ፡ ምጽዋት፡ ታድኅን፡ እሞት፡ በዕለተ፡ ምንዳቤ፡ ወኢትወስድ፡ ውስተ፡ ጽልመት።
because alms-giving delivers from death, and doesn’t allow you to come into darkness.
4:11
δῶρον γὰρ ἀγαθόν ἐστιν ἐλεημοσύνη πᾶσι τοῖς ποιοῦσιν αὐτὴν ἐνώπιον τοῦ ὑψίστου
quoniam eleemosyna ab omni peccato et a morte liberat, et non patietur animam ire in tenebras.
እስመ፡ ሠናይ፡ ጸጋ፡ ይእቲ፡ ምጽዋት፡ ለእለ፡ ይገብርዋ፡ በቅድመ፡ ልዑል።
Alms is a good gift in the sight of the Most High for all that give it.
4:12
πρόσεχε σεαυτῷ παιδίον ἀπὸ πάσης πορνείας καὶ γυναῖκα πρῶτον λαβὲ ἀπὸ τοῦ σπέρματος τῶν πατέρων σου μὴ λάβῃς γυναῖκα ἀλλοτρίαν ἣ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς τοῦ πατρός σου διότι υἱοὶ προφητῶν ἐσμεν Νωε Αβρααμ Ισαακ Ιακωβ οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ αἰῶνος μνήσθητι παιδίον ὅτι οὗτοι πάντες ἔλαβον γυναῖκας ἐκ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτῶν καὶ εὐλογήθησαν ἐν τοῖς τέκνοις αὐτῶν καὶ τὸ σπέρμα αὐτῶν κληρονομήσει γῆν
Fiducia magna erit coram summo Deo, eleemosyna omnibus facientibus eam.
ወዑቅ፡ ርእሰከ፡ ኦ፡ ወልድየ፡ እምኵሉ፡ ዝሙት፡ ወቅድም፡ ለከ፡ ነሢአ፡ ብእሲት፡ እምዘርአ፡ አበዊከ፡ ወኢታውስብ፡ እምነኪር፡ ለእመ፡ ኢኮነት፡ እምዘመድከ፡ እስመ፡ እምደቂቀ፡ ነቢያት፡ ንሕነ፡ ኖኅ፡ ወአብርሃም፡ ይስሐቅ፡ ወያዕቆብ፡ እለ፡ እምዓለም፡ አበዊነ፡ ተዘከር፡ ወልድየ፡ ከመ፡ ኵሎሙ፡ ነሥኡ፡ አንስትያ፡ እምትውልደ፡ አኃዊሆሙ፡ ወተባረኩ፡ ውሉዶሙ፡ ወዘርኦሙ፡ ወረስዋ፡ ለምድር።
Beware, my child, of all whoredom, and take first a wife of the seed of your fathers. Don’t take a strange wife, who is not of your father’s tribe; for we are the descendants of the prophets. Remember, my child, that Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, our fathers of old time, all took wives of their kindred, and were blessed in their children, and their seed will inherit the land.
4:13
καὶ νῦν παιδίον ἀγάπα τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου καὶ μὴ ὑπερηφανεύου τῇ καρδίᾳ σου ἀπὸ τῶν ἀδελφῶν σου καὶ τῶν υἱῶν καὶ θυγατέρων τοῦ λαοῦ σου λαβεῖν σεαυτῷ ἐξ αὐτῶν γυναῖκα διότι ἐν τῇ ὑπερηφανίᾳ ἀπώλεια καὶ ἀκαταστασία πολλή καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀχρειότητι ἐλάττωσις καὶ ἔνδεια μεγάλη ἡ γὰρ ἀχρειότης μήτηρ ἐστὶν τοῦ λιμοῦ
Attende tibi, fili mi, ab omni fornicatione, et præter uxorem tuam numquam patiaris crimen scire.
ወይእዜኒ፡ ወልድየ፡ አፍቅር፡ ቢጸከ፡ ወኢታዕቢ፡ ልበከ፡ እምነ፡ ቢጽከ፡ ወእምደቂቀ፡ ሕዝብከ፡ ወእምነ፡ አዋልዲሆሙ፡ ንሣእ፡ ለከ፡ ብእሲተ፡ እምኔሆሙ፡ እስመ፡ ኀበ፡ ሀለወት፡ ትዕቢት፡ ህየ፡ ሀሎ፡ ኃሣር፡ ወብዙኅ፡ ሁከት፡ ወኀበ፡ ሀለወ፡ ሁከት፡ ህየ፡ ሀሎ፡ ተጽናስ፡ ወንዴት፡ እስመ፡ እማ፡ ይእቲ።
And now, my child, love your kindred, and don’t scorn your kindred and the sons and the daughters of your people in your heart, to take a wife of them; for in scornfulness is destruction and much trouble, and in naughtiness is decay and great lack; for naughtiness is the mother of famine.
4:14
μισθὸς παντὸς ἀνθρώπου ὃς ἐὰν ἐργάσηται παρὰ σοὶ μὴ αὐλισθήτω ἀλλὰ ἀπόδος αὐτῷ παραυτίκα καὶ ἐὰν δουλεύσῃς τῷ θεῷ ἀποδοθήσεταί σοι πρόσεχε σεαυτῷ παιδίον ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔργοις σου καὶ ἴσθι πεπαιδευμένος ἐν πάσῃ ἀναστροφῇ σου
Superbiam numquam in tuo sensu aut in tuo verbo dominari permittas : in ipsa enim initium sumpsit omnis perditio.
አስቡ፡ ለኵሉ፡ ዘተጋነየ፡ ለከ፡ ኢይቢት፡ ኀቤከ፡ አላ፡ ሀቦ፡ በጊዜሃ፡ እምዘ፡ ብከ፡ ወእምከመ፡ ተቀነይከ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር፡ ይፈደፍድ፡ አስብከ፡ ወዑቅ፡ ርእሰከ፡ ወበኵሉ፡ ግብርከ፡ ኩን፡ ጠቢበ፡ ወበኵሉ፡ ግዕዝከ።
Don’t let the wages of any man who works for you wait with you, but give it to him out of hand. If you serve God, you will be rewarded. Take heed to yourself, my child, in all your works, and be discreet in all your behavior.
4:15
καὶ ὃ μισεῖς μηδενὶ ποιήσῃς οἶνον εἰς μέθην μὴ πίῃς καὶ μὴ πορευθήτω μετὰ σοῦ μέθη ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ σου
Quicumque tibi aliquid operatus fuerit, statim ei mercedem restitue, et merces mercenarii tui apud te omnino non remaneat.
ወዘትጸልዕ፡ ለርእስከ፡ ኢትግበር፡ ለመኑሂ፡ ወይነ፡ ለሰኪር፡ ኢትስተይ፡ ወኢትሑር፡ ምስለ፡ ስክርት፡ ውስተ፡ ፍኖትከ።
And what you yourself hate, do to no man. Don’t drink wine to drunkenness, and don’t let drunkenness go with you on your way.
4:16
ἐκ τοῦ ἄρτου σου δίδου πεινῶντι καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἱματίων σου τοῖς γυμνοῖς πᾶν ὃ ἐὰν περισσεύσῃ σοι ποίει ἐλεημοσύνην καὶ μὴ φθονεσάτω σου ὁ ὀφθαλμὸς ἐν τῷ ποιεῖν σε ἐλεημοσύνην
Quod ab alio oderis fieri tibi, vide ne tu aliquando alteri facias.
ወእምነ፡ እክልከ፡ ሀብ፡ ለርኁብ፡ ወእምነ፡ አልባሲከ፡ ሀብ፡ ለዕሩቅ፡ ወእምኵሉ፡ ዘይተርፈከ፡ ግበር፡ ምጽዋተ።
Give of your bread to the hungry, and of your garments to those who are naked. Give alms from all your abundance. Don’t let your eye be envious when you give alms.
4:17
ἔκχεον τοὺς ἄρτους σου ἐπὶ τὸν τάφον τῶν δικαίων καὶ μὴ δῷς τοῖς ἁμαρτωλοῖς
Panem tuum cum esurientibus et egenis comede, et de vestimentis tuis nudos tege.
ወዝሩ፡ እክለከ፡ ላዕለ፡ መቃብረ፡ ጻድቃን፡ ወኢተሀብ፡ ለኃጥአን።
Pour out your bread on the burial of the just, and give nothing to sinners.
4:18
συμβουλίαν παρὰ παντὸς φρονίμου ζήτησον καὶ μὴ καταφρονήσῃς ἐπὶ πάσης συμβουλίας χρησίμης
Panem tuum et vinum tuum super sepulturam justi constitue, et noli ex eo manducare et bibere cum peccatoribus.
ምክረ፡ ኅሥሥ፡ በኀበ፡ ኵሉ፡ ጠቢባን፡ ወኢታስትት፡ ምክረ፡ እንተ፡ ትበቊዓከ።
Ask counsel of every man who is wise, and don’t despise any counsel that is profitable.
4:19
καὶ ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ εὐλόγει κύριον τὸν θεὸν καὶ παρ’ αὐτοῦ αἴτησον ὅπως αἱ ὁδοί σου εὐθεῖαι γένωνται καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ τρίβοι καὶ βουλαὶ εὐοδωθῶσιν διότι πᾶν ἔθνος οὐκ ἔχει βουλήν ἀλλὰ αὐτὸς ὁ κύριος δίδωσιν πάντα τὰ ἀγαθὰ καὶ ὃν ἐὰν θέλῃ ταπεινοῖ καθὼς βούλεται καὶ νῦν παιδίον μνημόνευε τῶν ἐντολῶν μου καὶ μὴ ἐξαλειφθήτωσαν ἐκ τῆς καρδίας σου δώσει κύριος αὐτοῖς βουλὴν ἀγαθήν καὶ ὃν ἂν θέλῃ κύριος ταπεινοῖ ἕως ᾅδου κατωτάτω καὶ νῦν παιδίον μνημόνευε τὰς ἐντολὰς ταύτας καὶ μὴ ἐξαλειφθήτωσαν ἐκ τῆς καρδίας σου
Consilium semper a sapiente perquire.
ወበኵሉ፡ ጊዜ፡ ባርኮ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር፡ ወጸሊ፡ ኀቤሁ፡ ከመ፡ ሥሩሕ፡ ይኩን፡ ፍኖትከ፡ ዘይሤርሐከ፡ በኵሉ፡ ግብርከ፡ ወበኵሉ፡ ፍናዊከ፡ እስመ፡ ኵሎሙ፡ አሕዛብ፡ ዘይመክሩ፡ ምክረ፡ ዘኢኮነ፡ እምእግዚአብሔር፡ እንበለ፡ ውእቱ፡ እግዚአብሔር፡ ይሁብ፡ ኵሎ፡ ሠናይቶ፡ ወለዘፈቀደ፡ ያቴሕቶ፡ በከመ፡ ውእቱ፡ ፈቀደ፡ ወይእዜኒ፡ ወልድየ፡ ተዘከር፡ ትእዛዝየ፡ ወኢይደምሰስ፡ እምልብከ።
Bless the Lord your God at all times, and ask of him that your ways may be made straight, and that all your paths and counsels may prosper; for every nation has no counsel; but the Lord himself gives all good things, and he humbles whom he will, as he will. And now, my child, remember my commandments, and let them not be blotted out of your mind.
4:20
καὶ νῦν ὑποδεικνύω σοι τὰ δέκα τάλαντα τοῦ ἀργυρίου ἃ παρεθέμην Γαβαήλῳ τῷ τοῦ Γαβρια ἐν Ῥάγοις τῆς Μηδίας καὶ νῦν παιδίον ὑποδεικνύω σοι ὅτι δέκα τάλαντα ἀργυρίου παρεθέμην Γαβαήλῳ τῷ τοῦ Γαβρι ἐν Ῥάγοις τῆς Μηδίας
Omni tempore benedic Deum : et pete ab eo ut vias tuas dirigat, et omnia consilia tua in ipso permaneant.
ወይእዜኒ፡ እነግረከ፡ በእንተ፡ መካልየ፡ ብሩር፡ ዐሠርቱ፡ ዘአዕቀብኩ፡ ኀበ፡ ገባኤል፡ ወልደ፡ ግብርያ፡ ዘራጊስ፡ ዘሜዶን።
And now I explain to you about the ten talents of silver, which I left in trust with Gabael the son of Gabrias at Rages of Media.
4:21
καὶ μὴ φοβοῦ παιδίον ὅτι ἐπτωχεύσαμεν ὑπάρχει σοι πολλά ἐὰν φοβηθῇς τὸν θεὸν καὶ ἀποστῇς ἀπὸ πάσης ἁμαρτίας καὶ ποιήσῃς τὸ ἀρεστὸν ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ καὶ μὴ φοβοῦ παιδίον ὅτι ἐπτωχεύσαμεν ὑπάρχει σοι πολλὰ ἀγαθά ἐὰν φοβηθῇς τὸν θεὸν καὶ φύγῃς ἀπὸ πάσης ἁμαρτίας καὶ ποιήσῃς τὰ ἀγαθὰ ἐνώπιον κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ σου
Indico etiam tibi, fili mi, dedisse me decem talenta argenti, dum adhuc infantulus esses, Gabelo, in Rages civitate Medorum, et chirographum ejus apud me habeo :
ወኢትፍራህ፡ ወልድየ፡ በእንተ፡ ንዴትከ፡ እስመ፡ ነዳያን፡ ብከ፡ ይነሥኡ፡ በረከተ፡ ለእመ፡ ፈራህኮ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር፡ ወኃደገ፡ ኵሎ፡ ኃጢአተከ፡ ወገበርከ፡ ዘያሠምሮ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር፡ በቅድሜሁ።
And fear not, my child, because we are made poor. You have much wealth, if you fear God, and depart from all sin, and do that which is pleasing in his sight.”
