13:1 ⧉ ⤴︎ μάταιοι μὲν γὰρ πάντες ἄνθρωποι φύσει οἷς παρῆν θεοῦ ἀγνωσία καὶ ἐκ τῶν ὁρωμένων ἀγαθῶν οὐκ ἴσχυσαν εἰδέναι τὸν ὄντα οὔτε τοῖς ἔργοις προσέχοντες ἐπέγνωσαν τὸν τεχνίτην
Vani autem sunt omnes homines in quibus non subest scientia Dei ; et de his quæ videntur bona , non potuerunt intelligere eum qui est , neque operibus attendentes agnoverunt quis esset artifex :
እስመ ፡ ኵሉ ፡ ሰብእ ፡ እለ ፡ ሕፀተ ፡ አእምሮ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ህልው ፡ ውስቴቶሙ ፡ በአማን ፡ ከንቱ ፡ እሙንቱ ፡ ወበዘያስተርእዩ ፡ ሠናያት ፡ ስእኑ ፡ ያእምሩ ፡ ዘህልው ፡ ወእንዘሂ ፡ ይሬእዩ ፡ ምግባራቲሁ ፡ ኢያእመርዎ ፡ ለኬንያ ።
For verily all men by nature were but vain who had no perception of God, And from the good things that are seen they gained not power to know him that is, Neither by giving heed to the works did they recognize the architect;
13:2 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἀλλ’ ἢ πῦρ ἢ πνεῦμα ἢ ταχινὸν ἀέρα ἢ κύκλον ἄστρων ἢ βίαιον ὕδωρ ἢ φωστῆρας οὐρανοῦ πρυτάνεις κόσμου θεοὺς ἐνόμισαν
sed aut ignem , aut spiritum , aut citatum aërem , aut gyrum stellarum , aut nimiam aquam , aut solem et lunam , rectores orbis terrarum deos putaverunt .
ወባሕቱ ፡ ሐለዩ ፡ እሳተ ፡ ወነፋሰ ፡ ዘፍጡነ ፡ አው ፡ ዑደተ ፡ ከዋክብት ፡ አው ፡ ማየ ፡ ኅዩለ ፡ አው ፡ ብርሃናተ ፡ ሰማይ ፡ እለ ፡ ይትለአኩ ፡ ለሥርዓተ ፡ ዓለም ፡ አማልክተ ፡ አምሰሉ ።
But either fire, or wind, or swift air, Or circling stars, or raging water, or luminaries of heaven, They thought to be gods that rule the world.
13:3 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὧν εἰ μὲν τῇ καλλονῇ τερπόμενοι ταῦτα θεοὺς ὑπελάμβανον γνώτωσαν πόσῳ τούτων ὁ δεσπότης ἐστὶ βελτίων ὁ γὰρ τοῦ κάλλους γενεσιάρχης ἔκτισεν αὐτά
Quorum si specie delectati , deos putaverunt , sciant quanto his dominator eorum speciosior est : speciei enim generator hæc omnia constituit .
ወለእመ ፡ ለእሉ ፡ ምግባራት ፡ ረሰይዎሙ ፡ አማልክተ ፡ ሶበ ፡ ተፈሥሑ ፡ በአድሞ ፡ ሥነ ፡ ላህዮሙ ፡ ያእምሩ ፡ እፎ ፡ ፈድፋደ ፡ እግዚኦሙ ፡ ለእሉ ፡ ይኄይስ ፡ እስመ ፡ ወላዴ ፡ ሥነ ፡ ገብረ ፡ ዘንተ ፡ ፍጥረተ ።
And if it was through delight in their beauty that they took them to be gods, Let them know how much better than these is their Sovereign Lord; For the first author of beauty created them:
13:4 ⧉ ⤴︎ εἰ δὲ δύναμιν καὶ ἐνέργειαν ἐκπλαγέντες νοησάτωσαν ἀπ’ αὐτῶν πόσῳ ὁ κατασκευάσας αὐτὰ δυνατώτερός ἐστιν
Aut si virtutem et opera eorum mirati sunt , intelligant ab illis quoniam qui hæc fecit fortior est illis :
ወሶበሰ ፡ እምኃይሎሙ ፡ ወምግባሮሙ ፡ ተደሙ ፡ ይለብዉኬ ፡ እፎ ፡ ፈድፋደ ፡ ዘገብሮሙ ፡ ኅዩል ፡ ውእቱ ።
But if it was through astonishment at their power and influence, Let them understand from them how much more powerful is he that formed them;
13:5 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἐκ γὰρ μεγέθους καὶ καλλονῆς κτισμάτων ἀναλόγως ὁ γενεσιουργὸς αὐτῶν θεωρεῖται
a magnitudine enim speciei et creaturæ cognoscibiliter poterit creator horum videri .
ቦዑ ፡ ዕበየ ፡ ሥነ ፡ ዘፍጥረት ፡ ርእዮሙ ፡ ፍቱራን ፡ ቦቱ ፡ አስተማሰልዎ ፡ ለገባሬ ፡ ክዋኔሁ ።
For from the greatness of the beauty even of created things In like proportion does man form the image of their first maker.
13:6 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἀλλ’ ὅμως ἐπὶ τούτοις μέμψις ἐστὶν ὀλίγη καὶ γὰρ αὐτοὶ τάχα πλανῶνται θεὸν ζητοῦντες καὶ θέλοντες εὑρεῖν
Sed tamen adhuc in his minor est querela ; et hi enim fortasse errant , Deum quærentes , et volentes invenire .
ወባሕቱ ፡ ምስለ ፡ ዝኒ ፡ ዓዲ ፡ ኂስ ፡ ንስቲት ፡ ላዕሌሆሙ ፡ እስመ ፡ እሙንቱሂ ፡ እንጋ ፡ ሶበ ፡ ስሕቱ ፡ እንዘ ፡ የኃሥሥዎ ፡ ለአምላክ ፡ ወይፈቅዱ ፡ ይርከብዎ ፡ ተመይጦ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ምግባሩ ፡ አምኃሠሥዎ ።
But yet for these men there is but small blame, For they too perhaps do but go astray While they are seeking God and desiring to find him.
13:7 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἐν γὰρ τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ ἀναστρεφόμενοι διερευνῶσιν καὶ πείθονται τῇ ὄψει ὅτι καλὰ τὰ βλεπόμενα
Etenim cum in operibus illius conversentur inquirunt , et persuasum habent quoniam bona sunt quæ videntur .
ወአእከሉ ፡ በርእይ ፡ እስመ ፡ እለ ፡ ያስተርእዩ ፡ ሠናያን ፡ ዓዲ ፡ እስመ ፡ ምክንያቶሙ ፡ ስፉሕ ።
For living among his works they make diligent search, And they yield themselves up to sight, because the things that they look upon are beautiful.
13:8 ⧉ ⤴︎ πάλιν δ’ οὐδ’ αὐτοὶ συγγνωστοί
Iterum autem nec his debet ignosci .
እስመ ፡ በዝንቱ ፡ ገጽ ፡ ዘመጠነዝ ፡ ክህሉ ፡ ይነጽሩ ፡ እስከ ፡ ደለዎሙ ፡ ጠይቆተ ፡ ዓለም ፡ ወእመሰ ፡ ኢክህሉ ፡ ይርደብዎ ፡ ለእግዚአ ፡ እሉ ፡ ፍጡራን ።
But again even they are not to be excused.
13:9 ⧉ ⤴︎ εἰ γὰρ τοσοῦτον ἴσχυσαν εἰδέναι ἵνα δύνωνται στοχάσασθαι τὸν αἰῶνα τὸν τούτων δεσπότην πῶς τάχιον οὐχ εὗρον
Si enim tantum potuerunt scire ut possent æstimare sæculum , quomodo hujus Dominum non facilius invenerunt ?
ኅሡራንኬ ፡ እሙንቱ ፡ ወበውስተ ፡ ምግባርኒ ፡ ምውት ፡ ተስፋሆሙ ፡ እለ ፡ ጸውዑ ፡ ግብረ ፡ እደ ፡ ሰብእ ፡ አማልክተ ፡ ዘእምወርቅ ፡ ወዘእምብሩር ፡ ገብርዎሙ ፡ በተኬንዎ ፡ ምግባር ።
For if they had power to know so much, That they should be able to explore the course of things, How is it that they did not sooner find the Sovereign Lord of these his works?
13:10 ⧉ ⤴︎ ταλαίπωροι δὲ καὶ ἐν νεκροῖς αἱ ἐλπίδες αὐτῶν οἵτινες ἐκάλεσαν θεοὺς ἔργα χειρῶν ἀνθρώπων χρυσὸν καὶ ἄργυρον τέχνης ἐμμελέτημα καὶ ἀπεικάσματα ζῴων ἢ λίθον ἄχρηστον χειρὸς ἔργον ἀρχαίας
Infelices autem sunt , et inter mortuos spes illorum est , qui appellaverunt deos opera manuum hominum : aurum et argentum , artis inventionem , et similitudines animalium , aut lapidem inutilem , opus manus antiquæ .
ወአምሳለ ፡ እንስሳ ፡ አው ፡ እብነ ፡ ዘኢይበቊዕ ፡ ግብረ ፡ እድ ፡ ዘትካት ።
But miserable were they, and in dead things were their hopes, Who called them gods which are works of men’s hands, Gold and silver, wrought with careful are, and likenesses of animals, Or a useless stone, the work of an ancient hand.
13:11 ⧉ ⤴︎ εἰ δὲ καί τις ὑλοτόμος τέκτων εὐκίνητον φυτὸν ἐκπρίσας περιέξυσεν εὐμαθῶς πάντα τὸν φλοιὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ τεχνησάμενος εὐπρεπῶς κατεσκεύασεν χρήσιμον σκεῦος εἰς ὑπηρεσίαν ζωῆς
Aut si quis artifex faber de silva lignum rectum secuerit , et hujus docte eradat omnem corticem , et arte sua usus diligenter fabricet vas utile in conversationem vitæ ;
ወእመኒቦ ፡ ጸራቢ ፡ ዘይጸርብ ፡ ዕጸ ፡ ዘያስተርኢ ፡ ወዘኢይትሐወስ ፡ እስመ ፡ ወሠረ ፡ ዕፀ ፡ ዘሠናይ ፡ ሠረፀ ፡ ወጸረበ ፡ በሥነ ፡ ኪኑኵሎ ፡ ቅርፍቶ ።
Yes and if some woodcutter, having sawn down a tree that is easily moved, Skilfully strippeth away all its bark, And fashioning it in comely form makes a vessel useful for the service of life;
13:12 ⧉ ⤴︎ τὰ δὲ ἀποβλήματα τῆς ἐργασίας εἰς ἑτοιμασίαν τροφῆς ἀναλώσας ἐνεπλήσθη
reliquiis autem ejus operis ad præparationem escæ abutatur ,
ወተኬነዎ ፡ ሠና ፡ ወገብሮ ፡ ዘይበቊዕ ፡ ንዋየ ፡ ለመልእክተ ፡ ሕይወት ፡ ወፈጸመ ፡ ፀሪበ ፡ ገግብሩ ፡ ዘአስተዋፅኦ ፡ ለመልእክተ ፡ ሲሲት ፡ ወጸግበ ።
And burning the refuse of his handywork to dress his food, eats his fill;
13:13 ⧉ ⤴︎ τὸ δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀπόβλημα εἰς οὐθὲν εὔχρηστον ξύλον σκολιὸν καὶ ὄζοις συμπεφυκός λαβὼν ἔγλυψεν ἐν ἐπιμελείᾳ ἀργίας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμπειρίᾳ συνέσεως ἐτύπωσεν αὐτό ἀπείκασεν αὐτὸ εἰκόνι ἀνθρώπου
et reliquum horum quod ad nullos usus facit , lignum curvum et vorticibus plenum sculpat diligenter per vacuitatem suam , et per scientiam suæ artis figuret illud , et assimilet illud imagini hominis ,
ወዓዲ ፡ ግማደ ፡ ዘተርፈ ፡ እምዕፅ ፡ ዘኢይበቊዕ ፡ በምንትኒ ፡ ዕፅ ፡ ጽኑዕ ፡ ወጠዋይ ፡ ዘአፅጹቂሁ ፡ ኵለሄ ፡ ነሢኦ ፡ ወጸሪቦ ፡ በአስተሐምሞ ፡ ግብሩ ፡ ወእምዝ ፡ ገለፎ ፡ በመዋዕለ ፡ ጽርዓቱ ፡ ወመሰሎ ፡ በአምሳለ ፡ ሰብእ ።
And taking the very refuse thereof which served to no use, A crooked piece of wood and full of knots, Carveth it with the diligence of his idleness, And shapeth it by the skill of his indolence; Then he gives it the semblance of the image of a man,
13:14 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἢ ζῴῳ τινὶ εὐτελεῖ ὡμοίωσεν αὐτὸ καταχρίσας μίλτῳ καὶ φύκει ἐρυθήνας χρόαν αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶσαν κηλῖδα τὴν ἐν αὐτῷ καταχρίσας
aut alicui ex animalibus illud comparet : perliniens rubrica , et rubicundum faciens fuco colorem illius , et omnem maculam quæ in illo est perliniens ;
አው ፡ አስተማሰሎ ፡ በእንስሳ ፡ ከንቱ ፡ ወቀብዖ ፡ በኅጒሬ ፡ ወሤረዮ ፡ ወአቅየሐይሖ ፡ በአጽፋር ፡ ወመልአ ፡ ጥላቄ ፡ ዘቦቱ ።
Or makes it like some paltry animal, Smearing it with red, and with paint colouring it red, And smearing over every stain that is therein;
13:15 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ποιήσας αὐτῷ αὐτοῦ ἄξιον οἴκημα ἐν τοίχῳ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸ ἀσφαλισάμενος σιδήρῳ
et faciat ei dignam habitationem , et in pariete ponens illud , et confirmans ferro
ወገብረ ፡ ቤተ ፡ ዘውቅሮ ፡ ዘሎቱ ፡ ይደሉ ፡ ወአንበሮ ፡ ውስተ ፡ መካን ፡ ዘአውቀረ ፡ ሎቱ ፡ ወውስተ ፡ አረፍት ፡ አጥበቆ ፡ ወአጽንዖ ፡ በሐፂን ።
And having made for it a chamber worthy of it, He sets it in a wall, making it fast with iron.
13:16 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἵνα μὲν οὖν μὴ καταπέσῃ προενόησεν αὐτοῦ εἰδὼς ὅτι ἀδυνατεῖ ἑαυτῷ βοηθῆσαι καὶ γάρ ἐστιν εἰκὼν καὶ χρείαν ἔχει βοηθείας
ne forte cadat , prospiciens illi : sciens quoniam non potest adjuvare se : imago enim est , et opus est illi adjutorium .
ወአስተሐመመ ፡ ቦቱ ፡ ከመ ፡ ኢይደቅ ፡ አእሚሮ ፡ ከመ ፡ ኢይክል ፡ ርእሶ ፡ ረዲአ ፡ እስመ ፡ ምስል ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ወይፈቅድ ፡ ዘይረድኦ ።
While then he takes thought for it that it may not fall down, Knowing that it is unable to help itself; (For verily it is an image, and has need of help;)
13:17 ⧉ ⤴︎ περὶ δὲ κτημάτων καὶ γάμων αὐτοῦ καὶ τέκνων προσευχόμενος οὐκ αἰσχύνεται τῷ ἀψύχῳ προσλαλῶν καὶ περὶ μὲν ὑγιείας τὸ ἀσθενὲς ἐπικαλεῖται
Et de substantia sua , et de filiis suis , et de nuptiis votum faciens inquirit : non erubescit loqui cum illo qui sine anima est .
ወያስተበቊዕ ፡ ኀቤሁ ፡ በእንተ ፡ ጥሪቱ ፡ ወብእሲቱ ፡ ወውሉዱ ፡ ወኢየኀፍር ፡ እንዘ ፡ ይትናገር ፡ ምስለ ፡ ዘአልቦቱ ፡ ነፍስ ።
When he makes his prayer concerning goods and his marriage and children, He is not ashamed to speak to that which has no life;
13:18 ⧉ ⤴︎ περὶ δὲ ζωῆς τὸ νεκρὸν ἀξιοῖ περὶ δὲ ἐπικουρίας τὸ ἀπειρότατον ἱκετεύει περὶ δὲ ὁδοιπορίας τὸ μηδὲ βάσει χρῆσθαι δυνάμενον
Et pro sanitate quidem infirmum deprecatur , et pro vita rogat mortuum , et in adjutorium inutilem invocat .
ወየኀሥሥ ፡ በእንተ ፡ ፈውስ ፡ ኀበ ፡ ድውይ ፡ ወበእንተ ፡ ሕይወትኒ ፡ ምውተ ፡ ይስእል ፡ ወያስተበቊዕ ፡ ኀበ ፡ ዘአልቦቱ ፡ አእምሮ ፡ በእንተ ፡ ንብረት ፡ ወይትመሀለል ።
Yes for health he calls upon that which is weak, And for life he implores that which is dead, And for aid he supplicateth that which has least experience. And for a good journey that which can’t so much as move a step,
13:19 ⧉ ⤴︎ περὶ δὲ πορισμοῦ καὶ ἐργασίας καὶ χειρῶν ἐπιτυχίας τὸ ἀδρανέστατον ταῖς χερσὶν εὐδράνειαν αἰτεῖται
Et pro itinere petit ab eo qui ambulare non potest ; et de acquirendo , et de operando , et de omnium rerum eventu , petit ab eo qui in omnibus est inutilis .
ወበእንተ ፡ ሐዊረ ፡ ፍኖት ፡ ይስእል ፡ ኀበ ፡ ዘኢይክል ፡ ይትሐወስ ፡ ወኢየሐውር ፡ አሐተ ፡ ምሥጋረ ፡ ወበእንተ ፡ ብዕል ፡ ወምግባር ፡ ወረኪብ ፡ ወለአርትዖ ፡ እግረ ፡ እድ ፡ ኀበ ፡ ዘኢይገብራ ፡ እደዊሁ ፡ ምንተኒ ፡ ይስእል ፡ ወየኃሥሥ ፡ እምኔሁ ፡ ይጸግዎ ፡ ኃይለ ፡ ወአፍጥኖ ፡ ምግባር ።
And for gaining and getting and good success of his hands He asks ability of that which with its hands is most unable.
