To Marcellinus 1
Greek original · 425 verses · some words can be tapped for a gloss
1:1
I admire you, dear Marcellinus, for your resolve in Christ.
For you bear the present trial nobly, even though you have suffered much in it, and you do not neglect your spiritual discipline.
For when I inquired of the man who carried your letter how you were faring even after your illness,
I learned that you devote your leisure to the whole of divine Scripture, but that you apply yourself most frequently to the book of the Psalms, striving to grasp the meaning contained in each psalm.
And for this reason, then, I commend you, for I too have a great longing for this very book, as indeed for all of Scripture.
For being so disposed, I once fell in with a certain industrious old man, and I wish to write to you also what he, who had mastered the Psalter, recounted to me concerning it;
for his account has a certain charm and persuasiveness, together with sound reasoning.
All our Scripture, my child, both old and new, is God-inspired and profitable for instruction, as it is written;
我的孩子,我們的全本聖經,無論新舊,都是神所默示的,於教導有益,正如經上所記;
1:9
yet the book of the Psalms holds, for those who give heed, a certain persuasive feature of its own.
For each book serves and proclaims its own particular message;
因為每一卷書都各自承擔並宣告它特有的信息;
1:11
thus the Pentateuch tells of the origin of the world and the deeds of the patriarchs, of Israel's exodus from Egypt, and of the ordering of the Law;
如《摩西五經》述說世界的起源、列祖的事蹟、以色列出埃及,以及律法的頒佈;
1:12
the books of Kingdoms and Chronicles tell the deeds of the kings;
《列王紀》與《歷代志》記載諸王的作為;
1:13
and Ezra tells of the release from captivity, the return of the people, and the rebuilding of the temple and the city;
《以斯拉記》述說被擄歸回、百姓的返回,以及聖殿與城邑的重建;
1:14
the Prophets give prophecies concerning the coming of the Saviour, reminders concerning the commandments, rebukes against transgressors, and prophecies for the nations.
But the book of the Psalms, like a paradise, sings of all that the others contain within them, and again, singing along with these, it also displays its own.
For it sings the matters of Genesis in the eighteenth psalm:
"The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims the work of his hands";
「諸天述說神的榮耀,穹蒼傳揚他手的作為」;
1:18
"The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof, the world and all who dwell therein;
「地和其中所充滿的、世界和住在其間的,都屬耶和華;
1:19
for he has founded it upon the seas."
"When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a barbarous people, Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion."
And it sings these things also in the hundred and fourth psalm:
"He sent Moses his servant, and Aaron whom he had chosen;
「他差遣他的僕人摩西,和他所揀選的亞倫;
1:23
he set among them the words of his signs, and his wonders in the land of Ham.
He sent darkness, and it grew dark; and they rebelled against his words.
He turned their waters into blood, and slew their fish.
Their land brought forth frogs, even in the chambers of their kings.
He spoke, and there came the dog-fly and gnats throughout all their borders."
And altogether one may find this whole psalm, and the hundred and fifth, written concerning these same things.
And matters of the priesthood and the tabernacle it sounds forth in the psalm "On the going out of the tabernacle," the twenty-eighth psalm:
"Ascribe to the Lord, O sons of God, ascribe to the Lord young rams, ascribe to the Lord glory and honour."
And the matters of Joshua and of the Judges it somehow shows in the hundred and sixth, saying:
"And they established cities for habitation, and sowed fields, and planted vineyards";
「他們在那裡建造可住的城邑、耕種田地、栽種葡萄園」;
1:33
theirs was the land of promise.
And speaking continually in the same psalm:
"And they cried to the Lord in their affliction, and he saved them out of their distresses";
「他們在急難中哀求耶和華,他從他們的禍患中拯救他們」;
1:36
this signifies the book of Judges;
這是指《士師記》而言;
1:37
for then, when they cried out, he raised up judges in due season, and saved the people from those who oppressed them.
And the matters of the Kingdoms it somehow sings in the nineteenth psalm, saying:
"These trust in chariots and these in horses, but we will be magnified in the name of the Lord our God.
They are brought down and fallen, but we are risen and stand upright.
O Lord, save the king, and hear us in the day when we call upon you."
And the matters of Ezra it sings in the hundred and twenty-fifth of the Songs of Ascents:
"When the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like those who are comforted";
「耶和華叫錫安被擄的人歸回的時候,我們好像得了安慰」;
1:44
and again in the hundred and twenty-first:
"I was glad at those who said to me:
Let us go into the house of the Lord.
Our feet were standing in your courts, O Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is built as a city whose fellowship is complete in itself;
耶路撒冷被建造,如同連絡整齊的一座城;
1:49
for there the tribes went up, the tribes of the Lord, a testimony for Israel."
And the matters of the Prophets it signifies in nearly every psalm.
Concerning the coming of the Saviour, and that, being God, he would come, it speaks thus in the forty-ninth psalm:
"The Lord will come manifestly, our God, and will not keep silence";
「我們的神耶和華要顯然來臨,必不閉口」;
1:53
and in the hundred and seventeenth:
"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
We have blessed you out of the house of the Lord.
God is the Lord, and he has appeared to us."
And that this one is the Word of the Father, it thus sings in the hundred and sixth psalm:
"He sent his Word and healed them, and delivered them from their corruptions."
For the God who comes is himself also the Word who is sent.
And knowing this Word to be the Son of God, it sings the voice of the Father in the forty-fourth psalm:
"My heart has uttered a good Word";
「我心裡湧出美辭(道)」;
1:62
and again in the hundred and ninth:
"From the womb before the morning star I have begotten you."
For what else could one call the offspring of the Father but his Word and his Wisdom? Knowing this one to be he to whom the Father said:
"Let there be light, and a firmament, and all things," this book too contains it, saying:
"By the Word of the Lord the heavens were established, and by the breath of his mouth all their power."
Nor was it ignorant of him as the Christ who comes;
它也並非不認識那要來的他,就是基督;
1:68
but it speaks most especially concerning this in the forty-fourth psalm:
"Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever;
「神啊,你的寶座是永永遠遠的;
1:70
a sceptre of uprightness is the sceptre of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity;
你喜愛公義,恨惡罪惡;
1:72
therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows."
And lest anyone suppose that he came merely in appearance, it indicates that he was to become man, and that this very one is he through whom all things came to be, saying in the eighty-sixth:
"A man, even a man, was born in her, and the Most High himself has founded her."
For this is equivalent to saying:
"all things came to be through him," and "the Word became flesh."
"Hear, O daughter, and see, and incline your ear, and forget your people and your father's house, for the king has desired your beauty."
For this again is like the words spoken by Gabriel:
"Hail, O favoured one, the Lord is with you."
For having called him Christ, it immediately also made clear his human birth from the Virgin, saying:
Behold, Gabriel calls Mary by name, though he was a stranger to her by birth;
看哪,加百列按名稱呼馬利亞,雖然就出生而言他與她素不相識;
1:82
and having said that he was to become man, it consequently also signifies that he was passible in the flesh.
And seeing the plot that came from the Jews, it sings in the second psalm:
"Why did the nations rage, and the peoples imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers gathered together against the Lord and against his Christ";
「外邦為甚麼爭鬧?萬民為甚麼謀算虛妄的事?世上的君王一齊起來,臣宰一同商議,要敵擋耶和華並他的受膏者」;
1:85
and in the twenty-first it tells of the manner of his death from the person of the Saviour:
"You have brought me down to the dust of death;
「你把我安置在死地的塵土中;
1:87
for many dogs encompassed me, the assembly of evildoers surrounded me.
They pierced my hands and my feet, they numbered all my bones.
They themselves looked and gazed upon me;
they divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots."
And what else does the piercing of the hands and feet signify but the cross, of which it speaks? Teaching all these things, it adds that the Lord suffers these things not for his own sake, but for ours.
And again it speaks from his person in the eighty-seventh:
1:93
"Your wrath has lain hard upon me";
「你的忿怒重壓在我身上」;
1:94
"What I did not seize, I then repaid."
For not as one liable to it did he die, but he suffered for us, and bore upon himself the wrath against us on account of our transgression, as it speaks through Isaiah:
"He himself took our infirmities";
「他親自擔當了我們的軟弱」;
1:97
and on our part, when we say in the hundred and thirty-seventh psalm:
"The Lord will repay on my behalf";
「耶和華必為我成全」;
1:99
and the Spirit also saying in the seventy-first:
"And he will save the children of the poor, and humble the slanderer, for he delivered the needy from the hand of the mighty, and the poor who had no helper."
"Lift up your gates, O rulers, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall enter";
「眾首領啊,你們要抬起頭來;永久的門戶啊,你們要被舉起,那榮耀的王將要進來」;
1:102
"God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet."
And it proclaims his sitting, and says in the hundred and ninth:
"The Lord said to my Lord:
Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet";
你坐在我的右邊,等我使你仇敵作你的腳凳」;
1:106
and in the ninth it cries out the destruction that came upon the devil:
"You have sat upon a throne, you who judge righteousness;
「你坐在寶座上,按公義審判;
1:108
you have rebuked the nations, and the ungodly has perished."
And that he received all judgement from the Father, it did not hide, but foretells him also as coming to be the judge of all, in the seventy-first:
"O God, give your judgement to the king, and your righteousness to the king's son, to judge your people in righteousness and your poor in justice";
「神啊,求你將你的判斷賜給王,將你的公義賜給王的兒子,使他按公義審判你的民,按公平審判你的困苦人」;
1:111
"He will summon the heaven above and the earth, to judge his people.
And the heavens shall declare his righteousness";
諸天必表明他的公義」;
1:113
"God stood in the congregation of gods;
「神站在神(眾掌權者)的會中;
1:114
in the midst he will judge the gods."
Moreover, the calling of the nations can be learned from it in many places, but most of all from the forty-sixth:
"All you nations, clap your hands, shout to God with a voice of rejoicing";
「萬民哪,你們都要拍掌,要用誇勝的聲音向神呼喊」;
1:117
"Before him the Ethiopians shall fall down, and his enemies shall lick the dust;
「住在曠野的(古實人)必在他面前下拜,他的仇敵必舔土;
1:118
the kings of Tarshish and the islands shall offer gifts;
他施和海島的王要進貢;
1:119
the kings of the Arabs and of Sheba shall bring gifts;
亞拉伯和示巴的王要獻禮物;
1:120
and all the kings of the earth shall worship him, all nations shall serve him."
These things, then, are sung in the Psalms, while in each of the other books they are proclaimed beforehand.
And he said again, not in ignorance, that in each book of Scripture the same things concerning the Saviour are signified in a special way;
他又說(並非無知地說),在聖經的每一卷書中,論到救主的同樣事情都以特別的方式被指明;
1:123
and this is the message common to them all, and the one and the same harmony of the Spirit.
For just as the matters of the other books can be found in this one,
so too the matters of this book are often found in the others.
For Moses too writes a song, and Isaiah sings, and Habakkuk prays with a song.
And again, in each book one can see both prophecies and laws and histories.
For the same Spirit is over them all;
因為同一位聖靈臨到這一切之上;
1:129
and according to the distribution of his gift to each one, each one serves and fulfils the grace given to him, whether it be prophecy, or lawgiving, or the recording of history, or the grace of the psalms;
按照他分賜給各人的恩賜,各人就執行並成全所賜給他的恩,無論是預言、是律法、是歷史的記述、還是詩篇的恩典;
1:130
and since the Spirit is one and the same, of whom also are all the distributions, while it is itself undivided by nature,
this Spirit is wholly present to each, but according to the ministry the manifestations and distributions of the Spirit come to each;
這聖靈便完全臨在於各人身上,惟按各人的職事,聖靈的彰顯與分賜才臨到各人;
1:132
and furthermore, according to the need at hand, each one often ministers the word, as the Spirit supplies;
並且,按照當前的需要,各人就常常照聖靈所供應的來服事這道;
1:133
so that, as I said before, Moses, while giving the law, sometimes also prophesies and sings, and the prophets, while prophesying, sometimes also give commandments:
"Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean";
「你們要洗濯、自潔」;
1:135
"Cleanse your heart from wickedness, O Jerusalem."
For thus the book of the Psalms too, having what is proper to songs, that which in the other books has been set forth at length, these same things it sings in its own broad utterance with melody, as has been said before.
It even gives law at times:
"Cease from anger, and forsake wrath";
「當止住怒氣,離棄忿怒」;
1:139
and, "Turn from evil and do good;
又說:「要離惡行善;
1:140
seek peace and pursue it."
And it sometimes records history concerning the way of Israel, and prophesies concerning the Saviour, as was said before.
Let such, then, be the common grace of the Spirit present among all, and let it be found at work in each, and the same among all, as the need may require and the Spirit may will.
For more or less makes no difference in this matter, provided each unfailingly fulfils and perfects his own ministry.
But the book of the Psalms, even so, has again a certain grace of its own and a special distinguishing feature;
然而《詩篇》這卷書,縱然如此,仍另有它獨特的恩典與卓異的特色;
1:145
for in addition to the other things in which it has relation and fellowship with the other books, it has besides this its own marvel, that it also contains, depicted and shaped within itself, the movements of each soul, together with their changes and corrections;
因為除了它在其中與別卷書有關聯與相通的那些事之外,它還有這獨特的奇妙,就是它也把各個靈魂的種種活動、連同它們的變化與修正,都描繪、塑造在自身之內;
1:146
so that whoever wishes may take from it and consider himself as in a boundless mirror, and there is written the very way of fashioning oneself.
For in the other books one only hears the law commanding what one must and must not do;
因為在別卷書中,人只聽見律法吩咐當行與不當行的事;
1:148
and one listens to prophecies, so as merely to know the coming Saviour;
也聽見預言,只為要知道那要來的救主;
1:149
and one attends to histories, from which one can come to know the deeds of the kings and of the saints.
But in the book of the Psalms, besides learning these things, the hearer also perceives and is taught in it the movements of his own soul;
但在《詩篇》這卷書中,聽者除了學得這些事之外,還在其中察覺並被教導自己靈魂的種種活動;
1:151
and furthermore, with respect to whatever he suffers and is held fast in, he can again take from it the image of the words;
並且,對於他所經歷、所困於其中的一切,他都能再從中取得言語的範式;
1:152
so that he does not merely hear and pass on, but it teaches him how he ought, by speaking and acting, to heal his passion. For in the other books also there are restraining words forbidding base things;
以致他不僅是聽過就罷了,這卷書還教導他當如何藉言語與行動去醫治自己的情慾。因為別卷書中也有禁戒的話,攔阻卑劣的事;
1:153
but in this book it is also shaped out how one must abstain;
但在這卷書中,還塑造出人當如何戒絕;
1:154
for example, it is a precept to repent;
例如,悔改本是一條命令;
1:155
and to repent is to cease from sin;
而悔改就是止住罪;
1:156
but here it is also shaped out how to repent, and what one must say in repenting.
And again Paul has said:
"Affliction works patience in the soul, and patience proof, and proof hope, and hope does not put to shame."
But in the Psalms it is written and engraved how one must bear afflictions, and what one in affliction must say, and what after the afflictions, and how each is proved, and what are the words of those who hope in the Lord.
Again, it is a commandment to give thanks in everything;
再者,凡事謝恩本是一條誡命;
1:161
but the Psalms teach also what one must say in giving thanks.
Then, hearing from others:
"All who wish to live godly will be persecuted," from these we are taught also how those who flee must call out, and what words those who are persecuted, and who after the persecution are delivered, must offer up to God.
We are commanded to bless the Lord and to give thanks to him;
我們被吩咐要稱頌耶和華、向他稱謝;
1:165
but in the Psalms we are shaped in how we must praise the Lord, and with what words, in speaking them, we may fittingly give thanks.
And in every case one would thus find the divine songs laid out with reference to us and to our movements and conditions.
And those who hear consider themselves to be those very ones of whom the word speaks, and they come, even to the point of admiring and emulating the deeds set forth, to imitate them.
Whoever takes up this book goes through the prophecies concerning the Saviour, as he is accustomed in the other Scriptures, with wonder and worship, but he reads the other psalms as being his own words;
凡拿起這卷書的人,就如他在別卷聖經中所慣有的那樣,帶著驚奇與敬拜讀過那些論到救主的預言,卻把其餘的詩讀作他自己的話;
1:169
and the one who hears them is pierced, as though he himself were speaking, and he conforms himself to the words of the songs as being his own.
And for the sake of clarity one must not hesitate, following the blessed Apostle, to take up the same point and say it again.
Very many are the words of the patriarchs, and they are their own, spoken by them;
列祖的話極多,都是他們自己的,是他們親口說的;
1:172
and Moses spoke, while God answered;
摩西說話,神就回答;
1:173
and Elijah and Elisha, sitting upon Mount Carmel, called upon the Lord, and always said:
"As the Lord lives, before whom I stood today."
And the words of the other holy prophets are, foremost, those concerning the Saviour;
其餘眾聖先知的話,居首位的乃是論到救主的話;
1:176
and then there are very many addressed to the nations and to Israel.
And yet no one would ever speak the words of the patriarchs as his own, nor would anyone dare to imitate and speak the words proper to Moses, nor those of Abraham concerning his servant born in his house and concerning Ishmael, nor the matters concerning the great Isaac, even if the same need and necessity should overtake him, would anyone dare to speak them as his own.
And even if one should suffer along with those who suffer, and should at times take on a longing for what is higher, never would he say, as Moses did:
"If you will forgive them their sin, forgive it;
「倘或你肯赦免他們的罪,便赦免吧;
1:180
but if not, then blot me out of your book which you have written."
Nor again, taking the words of the prophets as his own, would anyone blame or praise, for doing the like, those whom they blamed and praised;
也沒有人會把眾先知的話當作自己的,去責備或稱讚那些行了與當日所責備、所稱讚之事相同的人;
1:182
nor would anyone imitate and say, as his own word: "As the Lord lives, before whom I stood today."
For indeed, the one who reads these books is manifestly speaking the words not as his own, but as those of the saints and of those signified through them.
But the Psalms—and this is the marvel—after the prophecies concerning the Saviour and the nations, the one who recites the rest is speaking them as his own words, and each one sings them as having been written about himself, and receives and goes through them not as the speech of another or as signifying about another;
惟獨《詩篇》——這正是奇妙之處——在那些論到救主與列國的預言之後,誦讀其餘各篇的人乃是把它們當作自己的話來說,各人都把它們當作是為他自己而寫的來歌唱,並非當作他人之言、或是論到他人的事來領受與誦讀;
1:185
but he is disposed as one speaking about himself concerning himself;
反倒像是一個論到自己、為自己說話的人那樣領受;
1:186
and whatever the things spoken are, these he offers up to God as one who himself did them and speaks out of himself.
For he will not have reverence toward these as toward the words of the patriarchs and of Moses and of the other prophets;
因為他不會像對待列祖、摩西和其餘先知的話那樣,對這些話心存忌憚;
1:188
but rather, the one who sings these things takes courage to speak them most especially as his own and as written about himself.
For the Psalms contain both the one who kept the commandment and the one who transgressed it, and the deed of each.
And it is necessary that every man be held within these, and that he speak the words written concerning each, either as one who kept the commandment or as one who transgressed it.
And it seems to me that these become for the one who sings as a kind of mirror, so that he may perceive in them both himself and the movements of his own soul, and thus, having become aware, may utter them.
For indeed, the one who hears the reader receives the song as though it were spoken concerning himself;
因為連那聽見誦讀者的人,也把這詩歌領受為是論到自己而說的;
1:193
and either, being convicted by his conscience and pierced, he will repent, or, hearing of the hope in God and of the help that comes to those who believe, he rejoices as though such grace had come to him, and begins to give thanks to God.
So then, when one sings the third psalm in regard to his own afflictions, he considers the words in the psalm to be his own;
因此,當人按自己的患難歌唱第三篇時,他便以為篇中的話是自己的;
1:195
and then he recites the eleventh and the sixteenth as expressing his own trust and prayer;
接著他誦讀第十一篇與第十六篇,作為表達自己的倚靠與禱告;
1:196
and the fiftieth psalm he speaks as being himself the one uttering his own words of repentance;
第五十篇,他則當作是自己在說自己悔改的話;
1:197
and the fifty-third, the fifty-fifth, the fifty-sixth, and the hundred and forty-first—when one sings these, it is not as one persecuted by another, but as being himself the sufferer that he conforms himself, and sings these words to the Lord as his own.
...that the movements of our soul are to be perceived, and that all these psalms are spoken concerning us, and are our own as our own words, for the recollection of the movements within us and the correction of our manner of life.
For the things which those who sing have spoken can also become types and characters of ourselves.
And this again is the grace of the Saviour;
這又是救主的恩典;
1:201
for having become man for our sake, he offered up his own body for us unto death, that he might deliver all from death;
因為他為我們的緣故成了人,把自己的身體為我們獻上,以至於死,為要使眾人脫離死亡;
1:202
and wishing to show us his own heavenly and well-pleasing manner of life, he depicted it in himself, so that no longer might any be easily deceived by the enemy, having as a pledge for their security the victory over the devil which he won on our behalf.
"Learn from me, for I am meek and lowly in heart."
And one could not find a more perfect teaching unto virtue than that which the Lord depicted in himself.
For whether it be forbearance, or love of mankind, or goodness, or courage, or mercy, or righteousness, one will find all these to have been realized in him, so that nothing is lacking unto virtue for the one who considers him.
For knowing this, Paul said:
"Be imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ."
The lawgivers among the Greeks have grace only as far as speaking;
希臘人中的立法者,其能耐不過止於言說;
1:209
but the Lord, being truly Lord of all and caring for the works he had made, not only gives law, but has also given himself as a pattern, that those who will may know the power to do.
For, to put it more persuasively: all divine Scripture is a teacher of virtue and of true faith;
說得更貼切些:全本聖經都是美德與真信仰的教師;
1:211
but the book of the Psalms has besides, in a way, the image of the conduct of souls.
For just as one who enters into the presence of a king is shaped both in bearing and in words, lest, by speaking otherwise, he be cast out as untaught;
因為正如進到君王面前的人,在儀態和言語上都要照規矩,免得他說了不合宜的話,就被當作沒有教養而被攆出去;
1:213
so the divine book first reminds, through the reading, the one who runs toward virtue and wishes to consider the Saviour's manner of life in the body, of the movements of the soul, and so thereafter shapes and teaches those who engage with such words.
There are then—that one may observe this first about the book—some psalms spoken in narrative, some in exhortation, some in prophecy, some as in prayer, some in confession.

Such, then, being the arrangement of the Psalms, it is thereafter possible for those who engage with them to find in each, as I said before, the movements and the condition of their own soul, and thus, concerning each, the type and the teaching;
那麼,《詩篇》既有這樣的編排,研讀它們的人此後便能照我先前所說,在每一篇中找到自己靈魂的活動與境況,並由此就每件事找到範型與教導;

For some of the simpler ones among us, although they believe that the words are inspired by God, nevertheless suppose that the psalms are set to melody merely for the sake of euphony and for the delight of the ear.
But Scripture did not seek what is sweet and persuasive;
然而聖經並非尋求那甘美悅耳、能打動人的;
1:349
rather this too was patterned for the benefit of the soul, on account of all things indeed, but most especially on account of these two:
first, that it was fitting for divine Scripture to praise God not only with continuous speech, but also with the voice extended in breadth;
第一,神聖的經文當以神為頌讚的對象,不僅用連貫的言語,也用那拉長而舒展的歌聲;
1:351
and "in breadth" is said of such as are the words of the psalms and odes and songs;
所謂「舒展」,乃是指詩篇、頌歌與詩歌這一類的話語;
1:352
for thus also will be preserved that men should love God with their whole strength and power.
...so as to reason out the best things, but to do the base by reason of passion, like Pilate, who said indeed:
"I find no fault in him";
「我查不出他有什麼罪來」;
1:355
yet in his decision he ran along with the opinion of the Jews;
他在判斷上卻隨從了猶太人的主張;
1:356
or to desire base things but be unable to do them, like the elders against Susanna;
或是貪戀卑劣之事卻無力施行,正如那兩個謀害蘇撒拿的長老;
1:357
or again, not to commit adultery, yet to steal;
又或是不犯姦淫,卻去偷竊;
1:358
or not to steal, yet to murder;
或是不偷竊,卻去殺人;
1:359
or not to murder, yet to blaspheme.
Therefore, lest any such disturbance arise in us, the Word wills that the soul, having the mind of Christ, as the Apostle said, should use him as guide, and by him master the passible elements within it, and rule the members of the body, that they may obey the Word;
因此,為使我們裡面不生出這類的擾亂,道願意人的靈魂存有基督的心思,正如使徒所說,以祂為引導者,藉著祂制伏靈裡那些受情慾牽動的部分,並管理身體的肢體,使它們順服這道;
1:361
so that, as the plectrum in a harmony, so the man himself, having become a psaltery and giving heed wholly to the Spirit, may with all his members and movements obey and serve the will of God.
And of such tranquility of thoughts and untroubled state, the melodious reading of the Psalms is an image and pattern.
For just as we make known and signify the thoughts of the soul through the words we utter, so likewise the Lord, willing the melody of the words to be a symbol of the spiritual harmony in the soul, ordained that the odes be sung melodiously, and that the psalms be read with song.
And this is the desire of the soul—that it be well-disposed—as it is written:
"Is any among you cheerful? Let him sing psalms."
Thus what is turbulent and rough and disorderly in it is smoothed out;
這樣,靈魂裡那些動盪、粗糙、紊亂的,便得以平順下來;
1:367
and what grieves it is healed, when we sing:
"Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why do you disquiet me?" And the soul will recognize what is amiss, saying:
"But as for me, my feet were almost gone";
「至於我,我的腳幾乎失閃」;
1:370
and what is afraid it will strengthen with hope, in saying:
"The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man can do to me."
Now those who do not read the divine odes in this manner do not sing with understanding, but please only themselves, and they incur blame, for "Praise is not seemly in the mouth of a sinner";
凡不照這樣的方式誦讀神聖頌歌的人,乃是不明所以地歌唱,只圖自己歡愉,反招責備,因為「讚美的話在罪人口中並不合宜」;
1:373
but those who sing in the manner aforesaid, so that the melody of the words is offered from the rhythm of the soul and from its accord with the Spirit—such as these sing indeed with the tongue, but singing also with the mind, they greatly profit not only themselves but also those who are willing to hear them.
...they invited [men] to join the choir of those who dance in the heavens.
Therefore the saying of the psalms with melody is not a zeal for fine sound, but a token of the harmony of the thoughts within the soul.
And the melodious reading is a symbol of the well-ordered and storm-free state of the understanding.
For indeed the praising of God on well-sounding cymbals and harp and ten-stringed psaltery was again a symbol and a sign that the members of the body should be set together lawfully like strings, and that the thoughts of the soul should become like cymbals, and that thereafter all these should be moved and live by the sound and the impulse of the Spirit;
因為用聲音響亮的鈸、琴與十弦的瑟讚美神,這又是一個表記與標誌,指明身體的肢體當如琴弦般合宜地配搭,靈魂的思念當如鈸一般,此後這一切都當隨著聖靈的響聲與指引而活動、而存活;
1:378
so that, according to what is written, by the Spirit the man may live indeed, and put to death the deeds of the body.
For in this way also he who sings well gives rhythm to his soul, and as it were leads it from inequality to equality;
因為人這樣善於歌唱,便使自己的靈魂有了韻律,彷彿將它從不均衡引到均衡;
1:380
so that, standing in its natural state, it may not be terrified by anything, but rather become more full of good imaginings, and may take to itself a greater longing for the good things to come.
For being attuned together to the melody of the words, it forgets the passions, and rejoicing it looks toward the mind that is in Christ, reasoning out the best things.
For I consider that in these words of the book the whole life of men, and the dispositions of the soul, and the movements of the thoughts, are measured out and comprehended;
因為我認為,在這書卷的話語中,人的整個生命、靈魂的種種傾向,以及思念的各樣活動,都被衡量並涵蓋無遺;
1:383
and that nothing beyond these is to be found in men.
For whether there be need of repentance or confession, or affliction and trial has overtaken one, or one has been persecuted and, being plotted against, was delivered; if one has become deeply grieved and is troubled, and suffers something such as has been described above; or perceives himself making progress while the enemy is being brought to nothing; or wishes to praise and give thanks and bless the Lord—he has the teaching about these things in the divine psalms.
For let him choose out the things said in them concerning each of these matters, and thus reciting them as though written about himself, and entering into accord with the things written, he offers them up to the Lord.
Let no one, however, dress them up with the plausible words from without, nor attempt to alter the wording or to change it altogether;
但無論誰,都不可用那來自外面、貌似動聽的話語來粉飾這些詩篇,也不可試圖改動或全然更換其字句;
1:387
rather let him recite and sing the things written simply as they have been stated, in order that the holy men who ministered them, recognizing them as their own, may pray together with us;
倒要照所記的話素樸地、如其所述地誦讀並歌唱,好叫那些傳遞這些話語的聖人,認出這原是他們自己的話,便與我們同心禱告;
1:388
or rather, that the Spirit who spoke in the saints, seeing the words inspired by him in those men, may join in helping us.
For by as much as the life of the saints is better than that of others, by so much also one might justly say that the words from them are better and stronger than those composed by us.
For in these things they were well-pleasing to God, and saying these things, as the Apostle said:
"They subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, turned to flight the armies of the aliens; women received their dead by resurrection."
Therefore now too let everyone who says these things be of good courage, that through them God will quickly hearken to those who beseech him;
所以如今凡說這些話的人,也當有膽量,深信神必藉著這些話,速速垂聽懇求祂的人;
1:393
for whether one is afflicted while saying these things, he will see in them great consolation;
因為人在患難中說這些話,必在其中看見極大的安慰;
1:394
or whether one is tried and persecuted while singing thus, he will be shown more approved, and will be sheltered by the Lord, who sheltered also the one who spoke these things;
人若在試煉與逼迫中這樣歌唱,必顯為更蒙稱許,並必蒙主庇護,正如主也庇護了那最初說這些話的人;
1:395
in these things he will overthrow the devil and put his demons to flight.
Saying these things, if indeed he has sinned, he will turn himself back and cease;
人說這些話,若實在犯了罪,便要回轉並止息;
1:397
and he will convict those who attempt to lead astray;
他也要駁倒那些企圖引人入迷途的人;
1:398
and of this no man is the surety, but divine Scripture itself becomes such.
For God commanded Moses to write the great Song and to teach it to the people;
因為神吩咐摩西寫下那篇偉大的詩歌,並教導百姓;
1:400
and King Josiah, when the book had been found and read in the hearing of all, no longer feared the enemies.
And whenever there was war for the people, the ark, bearing the tablets of the law, went before them all, and these sufficed in place of any battle array for their aid—unless there was among those who bore it, or prevailing among the people, some sin and hypocrisy.
For there is need of faith and a genuine disposition, in order that the law may work together for the things prayed for.
"I, at any rate," said the old man, "have heard also from prudent men, that of old in Israel, merely by reading the Scriptures, they drove out demons, and exposed the plots that these laid against men."
Wherefore he said that those were worthy of all condemnation who, abandoning these things, composed for themselves plausible words from without, and in these named themselves exorcists.
For rather do they make sport, and offer themselves to those [demons] to be mocked;
因為他們倒成了戲耍,反把自己交給那些鬼魔去嘲弄;
1:406
such as the Jews, the sons of Sceva, suffered, when they too attempted to exorcise in this manner.
For hearing these things from such men, the demons make sport;
因為鬼魔從這樣的人聽見這些話,便加以戲耍;
1:408
but the words of the saints they fear, or rather they cannot even endure them.
For in the words of the Scriptures is the Lord, whom, not being able to endure, they cried out;
因為主就在經文的話語之中,鬼魔不能忍受祂,便喊叫起來;
1:410
for they were burned merely by seeing the Lord present.
Thus also Paul gave command to the unclean spirits;
保羅也是這樣吩咐污穢的鬼;
1:412
thus also to the disciples the demons were made subject.
And in the case of Elisha the prophet, the hand of the Lord came upon him, and he prophesied concerning the waters to the three kings, when, at his command, the one who played the harp was playing.
So too now, if anyone cares for those who suffer, let him say these things; and he both profits the sufferer the more, and will show his own faith to be true and steadfast;
如今也是如此:若有人顧念受苦的人,就當說這些話;他既更使受苦者得益,又顯明自己的信心真實而堅定;
1:415
so that God, seeing this faith too, may grant perfect healing to those who beseech him.
For this also the holy man knew, saying in Psalm 118:
"In your statutes I will meditate; I will not forget your words";
「我要默想你的律例,必不忘記你的話」;
1:418
"Your statutes were songs to me in the place of my sojourning."
For in these things they gained even salvation, saying:
"Unless your law had been my meditation, then I should have perished in my affliction."
Wherefore Paul also made his own disciple secure in these things, saying:
"Meditate on these things; be in these things, that your progress may be manifest."
You too, meditating on these things, and reading them with understanding;
你也當思想這些事,並以悟性誦讀;
1:424
thus, in the psalms, being guided by the Spirit, you will be able to grasp the meaning in each one.
And you too will be zealous for such a life as those holy men had who, borne along by God, spoke these things.
