1:2564
and of the desiring [part], love;
欲情部分的終末,乃是愛;
1:2565
and of the incensive [part], peace;
忿情部分的終末,乃是平安;
1:2566
just as also of true priesthood [the end is] to be deified through these, and to deify [others]
For it is on this basis that we naturally possess reasoning in order to seek God, and we have received desire in order to long for Him alone, and we have obtained the incensive power in order to strive only on His behalf
And the end of the seeking is true knowledge;
而尋求的終末,乃是真實的知識;
1:2569
and of the longing, unceasing and ardent love;
渴慕的終末,乃是不歇而熾烈的愛;
1:2570
and of the divine struggles, the peace that surpasses every mind
Knowing that you, all-holy and all-blessed ones, are the producers and teachers of these highest goods, the truly handmaid of God — both daughter and mother — Eudokia the recluse, together with her sacred flock, has returned to you, having proved you, who are honored of God, to be victors over all who eagerly sought to have her for themselves
[She is called] daughter, in that through all things she possesses, by disposition, an unaltered likeness to God; and mother, in that she is also, in others, generative of a disposition according to virtue
But rejoice, then, and exult, having received back the more precious part of your holy flock;
那麼,就當歡喜快樂吧,因你們已重新迎回了你們聖潔羊群中那更為寶貴的一部分;
1:2574
and especially having taken along also my sanctified lord George the presbyter, the truly divine tilled field, and a most approved husbandman of the divine and great George, able in deed and word before God and all the people according to the husbandry-skill of souls, and therefore beloved by all who love the Lord
But since, for the time being, I have become half-dead and half-severed, torn away from their beneficial companionship, either take me too, as a diseased member, and heal me, or console me through your prayers, and persuade me to bear the separation without passion
For this too stands as proper to true and divine priesthood

Since we are about to celebrate the burial and resurrection of Christ, who died and was buried in the flesh for our sake, let us consider whether we too have died and been buried with respect to the old man that is being corrupted according to the desires of deceit, and have risen with respect to the new man that is being renewed according to the image of the one who created [him]
Of mortification: complete freedom from the passions;
屬乎死之事者:即完全脫離諸情;
1:2580
and of the second resurrection: the unblemished and true boldness according to conscience;
屬乎第二次復活之事者:即按良心而有的、無玷且真實的坦然無懼;
1:2581
and the illumination of knowledge according to the mind
And if these things have come to be in us, let us celebrate the feast together with Christ our God;
這些事若已在我們裡面成就,就讓我們與我們的神基督一同守此節期;
1:2583
but if not, let us strive at least not to betray the Word to the passions, after the manner of Judas, or not to deny him, after the manner of Peter;
若尚未如此,我們就當竭力,至少不效法猶大將道出賣給諸情,也不效法彼得將祂否認;
1:2584
lest somehow we should not be able to repent, and be led away regretting to no avail;
免得我們或竟不能悔改,徒然懊悔而被引去,無所裨益;
1:2585
or [lest we be unable] to weep bitterly and wash away the marks of denial
For denial of the Word is the refusal, out of fear, to do the good;
因為否認道,就是因懼怕而拒絕行善;
1:2587
and betrayal is the deliberate impulse toward sin carried into actual operation;
而出賣,則是那見諸實際運作的、蓄意趨向罪惡的衝動;
1:2588
of which may it never happen that we take experience

If, according to the great conqueror of trials, Job, the life of men is a place of trial
And the world, as the Lord said, lies in the evil one.
when the tempting life, and the evil-working world, and men, and demons have been put to death in us — that is, the passionate life, and the pleasurable deception according to sense-perception, and the fleshly sufferings, and the passionate stirrings of the soul, and the involuntary afflictions consequent upon these, which are called tribulations —
1:2593
Let us therefore endure, that we may be saved;
所以,讓我們忍耐,好使我們得救;
1:2594
for he who endures to the end shall be saved.
The peace of Christ be with us.
Departing toward his Passion, the Lord left peace to us;
主在赴受難之前離去時,將平安留給了我們;
1:2597
and again, having risen from the dead, he gave peace to us.
What is he hinting at through these words? That we must bear through opposite seasons without passion — neither, falling under grievous circumstances, being left without a better hope, nor, being carried along together with cheerful occasions, casting off the reasoning that disciplines us;
他藉此暗示什麼呢?就是我們應當無情慾地度過相反的時節:既不因陷入令人憂苦的境遇,而失去更美好的盼望;也不因隨順於歡欣的境況,而摒棄那管教我們的思念;
1:2599
but to be the same, both when suffering and when faring well.
But this does not come about, unless we first tread upon the asp and the basilisk;
然而,這事若不是我們先踏在毒蛇與蛇怪之上,便不會發生;
1:2601
that is, that we become above disobedience to the divine words, and acceptance of evil thoughts;
亦即,我們超越了對神聖言語的不順從,以及對邪惡念頭的接納;
1:2602
and that we trample down the lion and the dragon, that is, wrath and desire;
並且踐踏獅子與巨龍,亦即忿怒與慾念;
1:2603
when these have departed from us, all peace shall be ours, nothing being able to move us toward any of the things that remain here.
Let us master wrath and desire, and together we shall have cast down the whole house of the foreigners along with those in it, having slain together with the passions both the passionate life and its conduct.

For our sake he, being God and Lord of all, having become man, enters into his glory through sufferings and the cross and death, there being no other way appointed for him, even as it is written:
'Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things, and enter into his glory?'
Let us not lose heart in tribulations, growing faint;
讓我們不要在患難中灰心喪志,以致鬆懈;
1:2609
but let us look to Jesus, the author of our salvation, and the perfecter;
而是要仰望我們救恩的創始者、成終者耶穌;
1:2610
and let us endure with courage the things that befall us.
For the end of every tribulation is joy;
因為一切患難的終局乃是喜樂;
1:2612
and of every labor, rest; and of every dishonor, glory;
一切勞苦的終局乃是安息,一切羞辱的終局乃是榮耀;
1:2613
and, simply put, the end of all the pains endured for the sake of virtue is to be with God forever, and to enjoy the eternal rest that has no end.
But pray, Father, that we may attain to it, having crossed well the sea of life, and having kept the intelligible foundations of the soul unwetted by its brine.

Blessed is our master in the Lord, and blessed is the garden of his heart, which the true husbandman Jesus planted, and has filled with immortal plants of righteousness;
我等主公在主內是蒙福的,其心之園圃亦蒙福,是那真實的農夫耶穌所栽植,且已充滿公義的不朽苗木;
1:2617
of which we too have partaken of the fruits, having been filled with its spiritual vegetables;
我們也曾分享其果實,飽享了其中屬靈的蔬菜;
1:2618
with which the great Apostle also knows how to nourish those who are too weak for the immediate vision of divine things;
大使徒也深知如何用這些來餵養那些無力直接目睹神聖事物的人;
1:2619
feeding them, as it were with vegetables, on the natural contemplation of visible things;
如同用蔬菜一般,用對可見之物的自然默觀來餵養他們;
1:2620
and through the magnificence of the things that appear, leading them by the hand toward its creator.
Imitating him, our blessed Father and teacher has also affectionately shown us kindness, symbolically setting before us, through the vegetables, an understanding of this creation.
But impart also solid food, and stir up our soul, which is enfeebled by pleasures and has no appetite for divine things, tightening our desire with the subtler reasoning of providence and judgment;
但也請分賜堅實的食糧,並激勵我們那因逸樂而癱軟、對神聖之事毫無渴望的靈魂,用關於眷佑與審判之更精微的道理,收束我們的渴慕;
1:2623
so that you may not nourish your disciples with vegetables alone, teaching only the principles of things coming into being and passing away;
使你不致只用蔬菜來餵養你的門徒,只教導那些關乎生滅之事的道理;
1:2624
but also with grain, and wine, and oil, establish them firmly with the doctrines of things eternal.
giving the teaching that holds the virtues together as solid bread, and, as it were with wine, warming through with the teaching of unforgettable knowledge the heart of your followers toward a deifying ecstasy;
將那統攝諸德的道理,如堅實的麵包一般賜予;又如以美酒溫暖人心一般,用那關乎不可磨滅之知識的道理,溫暖你追隨者的心,使之趨向那使人成神的出神之境;
1:2626
the knowledge that nourishes, and keeps unquenched the torch that is within them;
這知識滋養並保持他們裡面的火炬不致熄滅;
1:2627
just as oil, producing in your servants the peaceful and undisturbed habit of gentleness.

and you make even the food of the body into an instruction for our soul.
and in the letter, having found humility, the mother of all virtues, through which both the generation and the guarding of good things is wrought for those who possess it, we wept abundantly, having observed how far we have been removed from this way.
For your mourning has become a reproof of the evils in which we are held fast;
因為你的哀慟,已成了對我們所深陷之諸惡的責備;
1:2637
and it has awakened our mind, which was sleeping deeply, and it has exercised our memory, which had been covered by the veil of puffed-up self-conceit;
它喚醒了我們沉睡已深的心智,並操練了我們那被自負自傲之幔子所遮蔽的記憶;
1:2638
making us knowers of ourselves, perceiving in due measure the disturbance caused by our own sins.
And it has made us in some measure partakers of wisdom, having received discernment of our own transgressions, if indeed he speaks truly who says:
'Those who know themselves are wise.'
Do not, therefore, cease, honored Father, both renewing our mind by your word, and asking, through prayer, deliverance from evils for us;
所以,尊敬的父啊,請不要停止藉著言語更新我們的心智,也不要停止藉著禱告,為我們祈求脫離諸惡的救贖;
1:2642
that you may receive for these things a reward from God, who grants the perfect purification of the soul according to conscience.
38. Of the Same to the Same
We thank you, honored Father, because you have given yourself to us as a model of excellent repentance, persuading us, through confession, to lay bare the dark treasures of the passions within ourselves;
尊敬的父啊,我們感謝你,因為你已將自己賜給我們,作為至善悔改的典範,藉著告白說服我們,去揭露我們自身內那些幽暗的情之寶藏;
1:2645
through which the hatred toward sin naturally comes to be confirmed.
For we are, in truth, those who cherish the passions, the memory of which, after the act, brings disgust;
因為我們實在是那些呵護、縱容諸情之人,這些情在行為之後所留下的記憶,帶來的乃是厭惡;
1:2647
as onions, loving the assent to evil thoughts, according to which the visual faculty of the soul toward virtue and knowledge becomes duller, receiving, as it were, layers of skin — the passionate imaginings of visible things;
如同蔥一般,我們喜愛對邪惡念頭的贊同,依此,靈魂朝向德行與知識的視力便變得遲鈍,彷彿層層裹上外皮——即那些對可見之物懷有情慾的想像;
1:2648
For, according to those who trace its etymology, 'onion' means 'the closing of the pupil.'
and as garlic, we eat the fulfillment of the passions wrought through their operation, according to which the mind, filled with impurity, breathes out to those outside, through shameful words and manners, the stench of the evils it has consumed through the deed.
But teach us, holy Father, how, after casting these away, we shall love the manna;
但求聖父教導我們,在拋棄這些之後,我們當如何去愛慕那嗎哪;
1:2651
I mean the rational bread of divine knowledge, rained down upon us from heaven, and how we shall keep it incorruptible;
我所指的乃是那屬理性的神聖知識之糧,是從天降於我們如雨一般的,並教導我們如何保守它不朽壞;
1:2652
neither storing it up for the morrow through delay, lest it breed worms of fleshly passions, decaying through idleness;
既不因拖延而為明日囤積它,免得它因怠惰而腐敗,生出肉體諸情之蟲;
1:2653
nor triumphing through ostentation, lest it be melted away by vainglory and become nothing.
With such words again nourish us, honored Father, your disciples, and commend to God through prayer those who cannot worship apart from your intercession.
39. Of the Same to the Same
Ungrudgingly you nourish us, sanctified Father, both the visible and the intelligible man.
supplying the body with what is needed for its subsistence;
你供應身體以維持其生存所需之物;
1:2658
and giving to the soul what leads to growth in the Spirit.
For God has made you rich in both respects, having blessed your entrance.
For by 'entrance' I mean the acquisition of the gifts granted to you by God, which is multiplied through practice.
我所謂的『進入』,乃是指你從神所領受之恩賜的獲得,這獲得藉著實行而不斷倍增;
1:2661
and as its outgoing produce, the transmission of the word that comes about from you to others;
而作為其產出,乃是由你傳給他人的道之傳布;
1:2662
and evidently in those who receive it, bearing as fruit the working of what is fitting.

Having attentively perused the wise and honored letter of your paternal holiness, O master,
and having examined everything, and having read through the whole book of my conscience, I found none of the things reported [in it] to be mine,
I quickly restrained the tension of my soul, tightening its slackness, since I deemed it vain to be added to praises belonging to others, and judged that such a thing belongs only to a soul inclined toward every alluring deceit.
For it is truly vain for one who does not possess in deed the glory of what is spoken, to attempt rashly to appropriate to himself praises as though full of virtue.
But my master, judging the affairs of others from his own advantages of virtue, renders his verdict, covering with the abundance of his godlike perfection the shame of the one wounded by many

supplying, that is, sufficient material, as I think, through the winter, so that, the Lord cooperating, we may be able to fulfill such a command of yours.
May you be greatly preserved for me, beloved and honored Father, and may you preserve [us] by prayers to God—
1:2677

——您的僕人與奴僕;
1:2678
and I will add also 'lover' — being delivered, through his intercession, from every diabolical contrivance.

One who has been taught by the Spirit to take everything captive unto Christ knows how to derive benefit from everything;
凡受聖靈教導、將萬物擄來歸順基督的人,都曉得從萬事中收穫益處;
1:2681
just as you too [derive benefit] from me, who am wholly estranged from divine grace, and thoroughly bound by the laws of the flesh,
And since I possess nothing, not even of serious worth, it would be necessary for me to refrain altogether from ever coming, lest, in fulfilling your command, I cause harm rather [than good].
And I shall come when the Lord wills, knowing that you have remained undefiled and unstained even while associating with me, the profane one.
For that which is holy by disposition, just as that which is holy by nature, will not be defiled by anything unclean.
But concerning the affair of the Vestitor, you do well to show sympathy, provided the matter involves no harm;

and I rejoiced as though I had received my master himself, and I embraced him in spirit, and, having wholly enfolded him within the room of my heart, I laid him up [there];
我因此歡喜,彷彿親自迎接了我的主人一般,並在靈裡向他致意,將他整個擁入心房之中,珍藏起來;
1:2713
and I glorified Christ our God, who has implanted in mankind, as a light, the law of love;
並且我讚美了我們的神基督,祂如光一般,將愛的律法栽植於人心之中;
1:2714
according to which those who know how duly to cultivate the seeds of love can never be absent from one another, even though they are bodily separated from each other by a great spatial distance.
But since the letter, bringing tidings of worldly peace, transformed the soul's grief into joy, it is necessary that we too should reasonably become altogether grateful to God who granted it, on its account;
然而,既然這封信,帶來世間和平的好消息,已將靈魂的憂傷轉為喜樂,我們理當因此對施予此恩的神,理所當然地全然心存感恩;
1:2716
lest we appear ungrateful concerning his benefaction, having repaid the Benefactor badly.
And we shall become altogether grateful by evidently using this peace as is fitting, and by renouncing the friendship toward the world and the ruler of this world that wrongfully subsists within us;
而我們要全然心存感恩,顯然當是藉著合宜地運用此和平,並棄絕那錯謬地存於我們裡面、對世界及世界掌權者的友誼;
1:2718
and, having at last dissolved the war set up against God through the passions, and having made with them a truce of peace toward Him through the mortification of the body, let us cease from enmity toward Him.
For it is impossible for us to be befriended to Him while we rebel against Him through the passions, and are held bound to pay tribute through wickedness to the evil tyrant and murderer of souls, the devil — unless we have first become wholly at war with the evil one.
For until then we remain enemies and foes of God, even if we fashion for ourselves the title of 'the faithful' — for as long as we wish to be enslaved to the passions of dishonor, and willingly consent to bring dreadful tributes to the devil through works of shame.
And so no benefit will come to us from worldly peace, if the soul remains ill-disposed, rebelling against its own Maker, and refusing to come under His kingdom, being still sold to countless masters who ever urge it on toward wickedness;
若靈魂仍舊處於敗壞的狀態,悖逆自己的造物主,不肯歸順於祂的國度之下,且依然被賣給無數不斷催逼它趨向邪惡的主人,那麼世間的和平便對我們毫無益處;
1:2722
and they deceitfully cause it to choose the road leading to destruction, rather than the one that saves.
But whenever we become sober from the drunkenness of the passions, and rise up against the wickedness of the devil and [his] tyrannical rule,
we shall accept to become His yoke, as He arranges and regulates us by the laws of truth, and we shall willingly consent to enter into friendship with Him;
我們便會接受成為祂的軛,任憑祂以真理的律法來規範、調度我們,並甘心情願地締結與祂的友誼;
1:2725
willingly bringing to Him tributes and dues, [namely] the fruits of righteousness brought to fulfillment in us through the virtues, according to His commandment.
Delighting in these for the sake of our salvation, He who alone is without need will grant us all things, being truthful, as many as He has promised us —
which are the things that eye has not seen, nor ear heard, which God has prepared for those who love Him.
For unto this end He has made us, that we might become partakers of the divine nature, and sharers of that same eternity;
因為祂正是為此而造了我們,使我們得以成為神聖本性的分享者,並同享那同一永恆性;
1:2729
and that we might appear like Him, according to the deification that comes by grace;
並使我們藉著那出於恩典的神化,得以彷彿祂的樣式;
1:2730
on account of which there is both the constitution and the continuance of all beings.
and the bringing-forth and coming-into-being of things that were not [in being].
Let us, then, become worthy of peace, my blessed master, manfully stripping off from ourselves the passions within us that rebel against God,
let us waste away the body as much as we are able, through whose vigor the devil's entrance toward the soul is naturally wont to occur;
讓我們盡力使身體消瘦衰弱,因為身體一旦強壯茁盛,魔鬼便自然容易由此進入靈魂;
1:2734
by divine readings let us steady the mind that wanders, and lead it back again toward God;
藉著神聖的誦讀,讓我們止住那遊蕩的心思,再次引它歸向神;
1:2735
by the exertions of self-control and vigilance let us prudently restrain desire, which through appetite is disorderly corrupted toward many things;
藉著節制與儆醒的操練,讓我們審慎地約束那因慾望而雜亂敗壞、流散於眾多事物的貪求;
1:2736
by prayers and supplications and almsgiving let us wisely lull to rest the temper that seethes and is troubled;
藉著禱告、祈求與施捨,讓我們智慧地平息那沸騰而擾動的怒氣;
1:2737
by the fear of God and the threat of things to come, let us halt the senses that are licentiously moved and active;
藉著敬畏神並顧念將來之事的警惕,讓我們止住那放縱地被挑動、發作的感官;
1:2738
In all things, and before all things, let us remember death and the fearful departure of the soul from the body;
在萬事之中,且在萬事之先,讓我們記念死亡,以及靈魂離開身體那可畏的出離;
1:2739
and how, in that air, the principalities and authorities and powers of darkness meet it;
以及那些幽暗的執政者、掌權者與能力,如何在那空中迎面攔截它;
1:2740
each one dragging it toward itself and rending it apart, in proportion to the evil kinship that had come to be in relation to it through the passion that mediated between them;
各按著透過那居中之情所形成、與之相繫的邪惡親近程度,將它拖向自己,並將它撕裂;
1:2741
let us remember the bitter anguish that comes upon the soul in Hades according to conscience, at the remembrance of the evils it wrought through the body;
讓我們記念靈魂在陰間按著良心所受的苦澀傷痛,因記起它藉身體所行的種種惡事;
1:2742
Let us remember the final consummation of the whole world, at which this universe is consumed by the great and boundless fire;
讓我們記念全世界末後的終結,那時,這整個宇宙將被浩大無邊的烈火焚燒;
1:2743
the elements being fearfully convulsed by the melting of that conflagration;
諸元素因焚燒之熔化而可畏地震盪動搖;
1:2744
and the heaven, rolled up, fleeing in terror and haste from before the face of the fire that purifies creation beforehand, on account of the presence of the Pure One;
諸天被捲起,因懼怕而急速逃離那預先潔淨受造界之火的面前,因為那潔淨者的臨在;
1:2745
the sea vanishing, the earth being convulsed and shaken from its very depths, and yielding up, undiminished, the countless myriads of human bodies;
海洋消失,大地震盪,從根基被搖動,湧出無數、絲毫不減的人類身體之眾多萬千;
1:2746
let us remember the dreadful hour of defense before the fearful and terrible judgment-seat of Christ;
讓我們記念那在基督可畏可懼的審判台前作出申辯的驚恐時刻;
1:2747
when all the power of the heavens, and all the creation of men from the foundation of the age, will behold what belongs to each one, down to even a bare thought;
那時,諸天的一切能力,以及自世界奠基以來的全人類受造者,都要察看每個人所有的一切,甚至直到一個赤裸的念頭;
1:2748
when, on the one hand, on account of the splendor of their works, the ineffable light will receive some, and the radiance of the holy and blessed Trinity, shining forth more clearly, will receive those able, through purity of soul, to behold and receive it;
那時,一方面,因著行為的光輝,那不可言喻的光要接納某些人,聖潔蒙福的三一之光輝更清晰地照耀,接納那些因靈魂潔淨而能夠觀看並領受它的人;
1:2749
while others, on account of the unseemliness of their works, the outer darkness will receive, and the unsleeping worm and the unquenchable fire of Gehenna;
另一方面,因著行為的醜陋,外面的黑暗要接納其餘的人,還有那不眠的蟲與地獄不滅的火;
1:2750
and, heaviest of all, the shame in the conscience that has no end.
Let us remember all these things, so that we may become worthy of the former, and may not be condemned to experience the latter;
讓我們記念這一切,好叫我們配得前者,也不至被定罪去經歷後者;
1:2752
and let us become [belonging] to ourselves and to God;
並讓我們成為屬於自己、也屬於神的人;
1:2753
or rather, wholly belonging to God alone, entire;
不如說,全然屬於獨一的神,完全歸屬;
1:2754
bearing nothing earthly within ourselves, so that we may draw near to God, and, becoming gods, having received from God the being gods.
For not yet are the divine gifts honored, and the presence of divine peace shown friendship.
So much, then, concerning this matter.
And may the God of peace, who reconciled us to himself through the cross, and, though we were enemies, ransomed us by his own blood from the authority of darkness, himself grant to my blessed master his peace which surpasses all understanding, and deem him worthy of his heavenly kingdom;
願那賜平安的神——祂藉十字架使我們與自己和好,又在我們作仇敵的時候,用自己的血將我們從黑暗的權勢下贖出——親自將那超越一切理智的平安賜給我蒙福的主人,並使他配得祂天上的國度;
1:2758
where is the dwelling of all who rejoice, and the chorus of those who keep festival.
Of the same [author], to John the Cubicularius, concerning adoption.
He not only loved us as himself, but also above himself;
他不僅愛我們如同愛自己,甚至超過愛自己;
1:2761
just as the power of the mystery also clearly teaches those who have piously received the confession of faith in him.
For if voluntarily, as one liable, he put himself forward, according to his will, on our behalf—we who, as liable ones, owed to suffer—unto suffering and death, then it is plain to anyone who has perceived the grace even in the slightest, that he loved us, for whom he delivered himself to death according to his will, above himself; and that, as one more than good, he preferred—even if the word is bold—the disgrace endured for us at the opportune time according to the divine economy, as more honorable than his own natural glory.
For the return of those who had gone astray to him truly constitutes surpassing honor and abounding glory of God, and a manifest advance and demonstration, more than natural glory.
And nothing is, with respect to the account of glory, more proper to him than the salvation of men;
而就榮耀而言,沒有一事比人的救恩更切合於祂;
1:2765
for the sake of which is every word and every mystery;
一切道與一切奧秘,都是為了這救恩而存在;
1:2766
and indeed, the most mysterious mystery of all: God himself, truly on account of love, having become man through the assumption of flesh ensouled intellectually and rationally, and having received into himself, unchangeably, the passions of our nature, in order that he might save man, and give to us men himself as a pattern for virtue, and a living image of the goodwill and love toward him and toward one another—an image able to move all to the owed recompense.
Since, then, it is God's law, both old and new, that we love one another as much as we have been loved;
既然神的律法,無論舊約新約,都要我們彼此相愛,如同我們曾被愛的那樣多;
1:2768
and that we make one another's misfortunes so much our own, that toward one another, by way of exchange, on account of the bond of love, we requite each other's dispositions, according to the commandment that bids us rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep;
並且要我們如此地將彼此的患難視為己身之事,以致因著愛的聯繫,彼此以相互酬報的方式回應對方的心情,正如那吩咐『與喜樂的人同樂、與哀哭的人同哭』的誡命所要求的;
1:2769
I entreat my God-protected and blessed master—having one and only aim, to follow, through equal loving-kindness, Jesus who passed through the heavens, being bound at all by no bond whatsoever of kinship to this deceptive world and its world-ruler—
for the present world is truly deceptive, ever alluring by deceit toward desire for the things that perish, and binding fast, in the servitude of material things, those who are by nature free and heirs of the heavenly goods;
因為這現今的世界實在是個騙局,總是藉著欺詐引誘人渴慕那將要朽壞的事物,並將那些本性自由、且是天上美物之後嗣的人,緊緊束縛於物質的奴役之中;
1:2771
playing through pleasure, and stealthily deceiving those who tolerate being held captive by these things.
Knowing, then, as I have said, that my blessed master has one and only aim, that of being saved, I entreat him, upon receiving my lord who is together with him, the most magnificent illustris, lord Theocharistos, who bears this my modest letter, to become to him all things in which he needs assistance, after God—or rather, with God—as much as we wish God, and our neighbor, to become to us ourselves, concerning the things for which we pray.
For he is truly a good man, and a temple of every work of righteousness, and, after God, the genuine patron of my sojourning community;
因為他實在是一位良善的人,是一切公義工作的殿宇,也是在神以後,我僑居之地真實的守護者;
1:2774
and an eager comforter of my many, frequent, and grievous infirmities;
也是我諸多、頻繁且沉重的病痛的熱切安慰者;
1:2775
and, simply put, according to the power available to him, he has assisted both me and many others,
granting, according to his own power, that this should redound to him.
For this is what the law of love dictates, and what the mystery of God's most divine sojourning among men through flesh wills;
因為這正是愛的律法所指示的,也是神藉肉身在世人中至為神聖之寄居這奧秘所要求的;
1:2778
so that he might return, with God's help, recounting the benefactions of my blessed master and the unadulterated zeal of his support toward him;
好叫他能靠著神的幫助歸來,述說我蒙福的主人的種種善行,以及那對他毫不摻假的扶助熱誠;
1:2779
and I too shall receive an increase of boasting, having obtained from God such a master upon earth, eager for every good work, and a ready and most sincere patron of all who are in need.
May God, who alone is good and loving toward mankind—
who, for the sake of our salvation, dispenses all things to all in a saving manner, himself hold your right hand, my master, and guide you into the way of his righteousness, and deem you worthy of the heavenly kingdom, having here rightly partaken of the divine gifts.
May the God of all, and our Lord Jesus Christ, preserve our most pious and altogether gentle emperors, and strengthen the might of their pious reign, and speak good and peaceable things concerning us, their humble servants, into their hearts;
願萬有的神,我們的主耶穌基督,保守我們那至為敬虔、溫良柔順的諸位皇帝,並堅固他們敬虔王權的權能,又將關乎我們這些卑微僕人的美善、和平之言,說入他們的心中;
1:2783
for grief makes me bold;
因為哀痛使我變得大膽;
1:2784
yet may He also grant them this itself as a prayer pleasing to God: that they have consented, even if only out of pressing need, to recall the all-acclaimed prefect of this land—who shines like a lamp in a parched place, and who in some manner frees everyone from the pain of not seeing—
a man who loves God, faithful, pious, good, reverent, temperate, self-controlled, forbearing, gentle, compassionate, merciful, a nourisher of the poor, a carer of the aged, a protector of widows, a guardian of monks, possessionless [unharmed], a lover of the Church;
這人愛神、信實、敬虔、良善、虔誠、節制、自持、能忍、溫和、有同情心、憐憫人、供養貧者、照顧老者、庇護寡婦、看顧修道者、不置產業〔或:無所傷害〕、愛教會;
1:2786
and, to speak concisely, a friend of all, both the living and the dead;
簡而言之,是眾人的朋友,無論生者或死者;
1:2787
cherishing the living in every manner of affection;
以各種慈愛的方式眷顧生者;
1:2788
and honoring the dead, in matters pertaining to burial, with the beauty of buildings, as Joseph of Arimathea honored the Lord who consented to be put to death in the flesh on our behalf;
並在喪葬之事上,以建築之美尊崇亡者,如同亞利馬太的約瑟尊崇那甘願為我們在肉身中被治死的主一般;
1:2789
and, still further, a most ardent zealot of right doctrine according to the apostolic faith, a herald of a life of righteousness.
And, to say it briefly: different men have zealously pursued different things upon earth, each according to his own inclination;
簡而言之:世人各按己意,在世上各自熱切追求不同的事物;
1:2791
but for George, it has been to tend and nourish the hospitals, and the homes for the aged, and hospices for strangers, and almshouses for the poor, and the monasteries, and the burial-grounds for strangers, and all the multitudes of the poor and needy who, by kindred, are scattered herd-like throughout the cities;
但對於格奧爾基烏斯而言,〔他所熱切追求的〕乃是照料並供養醫院、養老院、接待異鄉人的旅舍、賙濟窮人的救濟所、修道院,以及異鄉人的墓地,還有那按宗族、如群羊般散佈於各城市中的無數貧苦匱乏之人;
1:2792
and it is his work and pursuit to surpass, with the rays of his loving-kindness, the boundaries of east and west, of the northern and southern regions.
These things being so, who, among those who in any way lay claim to piety, does not know how much favor of God toward the whole world the good pleasure arising from such works kept calling forth, ever flourishing, continually present in his zealous efforts?
The opposite, which comes about through the neglect of these works, I shall pass over in silence, on account of its inauspicious nature.
