1:1
You ask that, out of our Hebdomads, I should set in order and demonstrate a little more clearly the obscurity of that question which contains the manner in which substances, in that they are, are good, although they are not substantial goods; and you say this is to be done because the path of writings of this kind is not known to all. But I myself am your witness, how vigorously you had embraced this beforehand. As for the Hebdomads, I ponder them for myself, and rather store up my speculations for my own memory than share them with anyone, for whose wantonness and petulance suffers nothing to be set apart from jest and laughter.
Therefore be not adverse to the obscurities of brevity, which, since they are the faithful guardian of a secret, have moreover this advantage, that they converse only with those who are worthy. As then is wont to be done in mathematics and in the other disciplines also, I have set forth terms and rules by which I shall accomplish all that follows. A common conception of the mind is a statement which everyone approves when he hears it. Of these there is a twofold kind: for in one it is common, so that it belongs to all men, as if you should propose this: 'If from two equals you take away equals, the things that remain are equal'; no one understanding this would deny it. But the other belongs only to the learned, which nevertheless comes from such common conceptions of the mind, as is:
'Things that are incorporeal are not in a place,' and the rest, which not the common crowd, but the learned approve. To be, and that which is, are different: for being itself is not yet; but that which is, having received the form of being, is and subsists. That which is can participate in something; but being itself participates in no way in anything: for participation comes about when something already is; but a thing is something when it has received being. That which is can have something besides what it itself is; but being itself has nothing else admixed besides itself. To be merely something, and to be something in that which it is, are different: for there an accident is signified, here a substance. Everything that is participates in that which is being, in order that it may be:
but it participates in something else in order that it may be something. And by this, that which is participates in that which is being, in order that it may be; but it is, in order that it may participate in anything else whatsoever. Everything simple has its being and that which it is as one. Everything composite has its being one thing, and itself another. All diversity is discordant, but likeness is to be desired; and that which desires another is naturally shown to be itself such as that very thing which it desires. Sufficient, therefore, are the things we have set forth before; but by the prudent interpreter of reasoning each one will be fitted to its proper arguments. The question, however, is of this kind: The things that are, are good; for the common opinion of the learned holds that everything which is tends toward the good; and everything tends toward its like.
1:5
quae igitur ad bonum tendunt, bona ipsa sunt ; sed quemadmodum bona sint in quirendum est, utrumne participatione, an subs tantia. Si participatione, per se ipsa nullo modo bona sunt : nam quod participatione album, est, per se in eo quod ipsum eSI, album non est, et de caeteris qualitatibus eodem modo ; si igitur parti cipatione, bona Bunt, ipsa per se nullo moda sunt; sed concessum est. Non igitur participatione sunt bona, sed substantia : quorum vero substantia bo na est, id quod sunt bona sunt, id autem quod sunt habent ex eo quod est esse. Esse igitur ipso rum bonum est: omnium igitur rerum ipsum esse, bonum est. Sed si esse bonum est, ea quae sunt, in eo quod sunt, bona sunt;
Those things, therefore, which tend toward the good are themselves good; but in what manner they are good must be inquired into, whether by participation or by substance. If by participation, they are in no way good through themselves; for that which is white by participation is not white through itself, in that very thing which it is, and the same holds of the other qualities. If, then, they are good by participation, they are in no way good through themselves; but this was granted. They are not, therefore, good by participation, but by substance; and those things whose substance is good are good in that very thing which they are, and what they are they have from that which is to be. Their very being, therefore, is good; the very being of all things, therefore, is good. But if to be is good, those things which exist are good in that very thing which they exist;
所以,凡趨向於善的事物,其本身就是善的;但它們以何種方式為善,則須加以探究——究竟是藉著分有,還是藉著本質。倘若是藉著分有,那麼它們本身絕無一處是善的;因為憑分有而為白的事物,就其自身之所是而言並非白的,其餘各種性質也是如此。所以,倘若它們是藉著分有而為善,它們本身便絕無一處是善的;然而這已被承認為善。因此它們並非藉著分有而為善,而是藉著本質為善;凡其本質為善者,就其所是而言便是善的,而它們之所是乃得自那「存在本身」。所以它們的「存在」本身就是善的;因此一切事物的「存在」本身都是善的。但若「存在」是善的,那麼凡存在之物,就其所存在而言,便是善的;
1:6
and for them to be is the same as to be good; they are therefore substantially good, since they do not partake of goodness. But if their very being is good in them, there is no doubt that, being substantial and being good, they are first like the prime good, and through this they will be the very good itself; for nothing is like that prime good except itself. From which it would follow that all things which exist are God—which is unlawful to say. They are not, therefore, substantially good, and through this, the good is not in their being; therefore they are not good in that very thing which they are; yet neither do they partake of goodness, for then in no way would they tend toward the good; in no way, therefore, are they good.
1:7
Huic quaestioni talis poteritadhiberi solutio.
To this question the following solution may be applied. There are many things which, although they cannot be separated in act, are nevertheless separated by the mind and in thought; as when no act separates the triangle, or the rest, from the underlying matter, yet the mind, by abstracting, contemplates the triangle itself and its property apart from matter. Let us, therefore, for a little while remove from the mind the presence of the prime good—which is indeed agreed to exist, and that by the verdict of all the learned and unlearned, and may even be known through the religions of the barbarian nations. This, then, being for a little while removed, let us posit that all things which exist are good; and let us consider how they could be good, if they had not in the least flowed down from the prime good.
1:8
Hinc intueor, aliud in eis esse, quod bonasunt, aliud quod sunt: ponaturenim una eademque substantia bona esse, alba, gravis, rotunda: tunc aliud esset illa ipsa substantia, aliud ejus rotunditas, aliud co lor, aliud bonitas ; nam si haec singula idem essent quod ipsa substantia, idem esset gravitas quod co- lor, quod bonum,et bonum quod gravitas; quod fieri natura non sinit. Aliud igitur tunc in eis esset esse, aliud aliquid esse ; ac tunc bona quidem essent,esse tamen aliquid esse; ac lunc bona quidem essent,esse modo essent non a bono, ac bona essent, ac non idem essent quod bona, sed eis aliud esset esse, aliud bonis esse ;
Hence I perceive that there is one thing in them whereby they are good, and another whereby they exist. For let one and the same substance be supposed to be good, white, heavy, round: then that very substance would be one thing, its roundness another, its colour another, its goodness another; for if these single attributes were the same as the substance itself, heaviness would be the same as colour, and as the good, and the good the same as heaviness—which nature does not permit to happen. There would then, therefore, be in them one thing 'to be' and another 'to be something'; and then indeed they would be good, yet their being would not come from the good; and they would be good, yet would not be the same as good, but for them 'to be' would be one thing, and 'to be good' another;
由此我看出,在它們之中有一者是它們「為善」之所在,另一者是它們「存在」之所在。因為假設有同一個本質既是善的,又是白的、重的、圓的:那麼那本質本身是一者,其圓性是另一者,其顏色又是一者,其善性又是一者;因為倘若這些個別的屬性與那本質本身是同一的,那麼重性便等同於顏色,等同於善,而善又等同於重性——這是本性所不容發生的。如此一來,在它們之中「存在」是一者,「為某物」是另一者;而那時它們固然是善的,其「存在」卻不出自善;它們固然是善的,卻與「善」不同一,而對它們而言「存在」是一者,「為善」又是另一者;
1:9
but if they were nothing else whatsoever except good—neither heavy, nor coloured, nor extended by spatial dimension, nor was there in them any quality save only that they were good—then they would seem to be, not things, but the principle of things; nor rather would they seem so, but it alone would seem so: for one and one only is of such a kind, that it is good alone, and is nothing else; and since these are not simple, they could not exist at all, unless he who alone is good had willed them to exist. Therefore, since their being flowed down from the will of the good, they are said to be good; for the prime good, in that it exists, is good in that very thing which it is; but the second good, since it flowed from that whose very being is good, is itself also good.
1:10
Sed, ipsum esse omnium rerum ex eo fluxit quod est primum bo num, et quod bonum tale est, ut recte dicatur, in eo quod est, esse bonum. Ipsum igitur esse eorum. bonum est; tunc enim, in eo quod essent, non es sent bona, si a primo hono minime defluxissent. Qua in re soluta quaestio est : idcirco enim licet in eo quod sunt, bona sunt, non sunt tamen similia primo bono : quoniam uon quoquo modo sint res, ipsum esse earum bonum est; sed quoniam non po test esseipsum esse rerum,nisi aprimoesse defluxe rit, id est a bono : idcirco ipsum esse bonum est, neque est simile ei a quo est. Illud enim quoquo modo sit bonum est, in eo quod est; non enim aliud est præterquam bonum ;
But the very being of all things flowed from that which is the prime good, and which is such a good that it is rightly said to be good in that very thing which it is. The very being of these things, therefore, is good; for then, in that they exist, they would not be good, if they had not in the least flowed down from the prime good. By which point the question is resolved: for although they are good in that very thing which they are, they are nevertheless not like the prime good; because it is not in any manner whatsoever that things exist that their very being is good; but because the very being of things cannot exist unless it has flowed down from the prime being, that is, from the good: for this reason their very being is good, and yet is not like that from which it comes. For that prime good is good, in whatever manner it may be, in that very thing which it is; for it is nothing else than good;
然而一切事物的「存在」本身,乃從那「至善」流溢而出,而那善是如此之善,以致可以正當地說,就其所是而言即是善。所以這些事物的「存在」本身就是善的;因為倘若它們絲毫未從那至善流溢而出,那麼就它們之存在而言,它們便不會是善的。由此一點,這問題便得解決:因為它們雖然就其所是而言是善的,卻仍不與那至善相似;緣由是:並非因為事物以任何方式存在,其「存在」本身就是善的;乃是因為事物的「存在」本身若非從那「至存在」(即從善)流溢而出,便無法存在:正因如此,它們的「存在」本身是善的,卻不與那「它所由來者」相似。因為那至善,無論以何種方式存在,就其所是而言即是善;它無非就是善而已;
1:11
hoc autem, nisi ab illo es set, bonum fortasse esse posset ; sed bonum, in eo quod est, esse non posset. Tunc enim participaret forsitan bono ipsum vero esse quod nun haberent a Dono, Donum habere non possent. Igitur sublato ab his primo bono mente et cogitatione, ista licet essent I bona, tamen, in eo quod essent, bona esse non pos- sent ; et quoniam actu non potuere existere, nisi illud ea quod vere bonum est. Droduxisset. ideirco et esse eorum bonum est, et non est simile substan tiali bono id quod ab eo fluxit: et nisi ab eo fluxi sent, licet essent bona, tamen in eoquod sunt, bona esse non possent;
but this latter, unless it came from that prime good, could perhaps be good, yet it could not be good in that very thing which it is. For then it would perhaps partake of the good, but the very being which it had not from the good they could not have as good. Therefore, the prime good being removed from these by the mind and in thought, these things, although they were good, could nevertheless not be good in that very thing which they were; and since they could not exist in act, unless that which is truly good had produced them, for this reason both their being is good, and that which flowed from it is not like the substantial good: and unless they had flowed from it, although they were good, they nevertheless could not be good in that very thing which they are;
但這「第二位者」,倘若不是出自那至善,或許能夠是善的,卻不能就其所是而言為善。因為那時它或許會分有善,但那並非得自善者的「存在」本身,它們便不能擁有為善的「存在」。因此,那至善若藉心智與思想從這些事物中被移開,這些事物雖然是善的,卻仍不能就其所是而言為善;既然它們若非那「真正為善者」予以產生,便無法在實際中存在,因此緣故,它們的「存在」既是善的,而那從它流溢而出者也不與那「本質之善」相似:倘若它們未從它流溢而出,它們雖然是善的,卻仍不能就其所是而言為善;
1:12
quoniam et præter bonum et non ex bono essent, cum illud ipsum bonum primum et ipsum esse sit, et ipsum bonum, et ipsum esse bo num. Atnonneetiamalba, in eo quod sunt, alba esse oportebit ea quas alba sunt, quoniam ex voluntate Dei fluxerunt, ut essent alba? minime. Aliud est enim esse, et aliud alba esse: boc ideo, quoniam qui ea ut essent efficit, bonus quidem est, minime vero albus. Voluntatem igitur boni comitata sunt, ut essent bona, in eo quod sunt; voluntatem vero non albi non sunt comitata, ut talis ejus esset pro pr:etas, ut esset album in eo quod est; neque enim ex albi voluntate defluxerunt. Itaque quia voluit esse ea alba, qui non erat albus, sunt alba tantum ;
since they would exist both apart from the good and not from the good, whereas that very prime good is both the very being, and the very good, and the very good being. But ought not white things also to be white in that very thing which they are, since those which are white flowed from the will of God, that they might be white? By no means. For to be is one thing, and to be white another: and this is so because he who brings it about that they should exist is indeed good, but by no means white. They have, therefore, accompanied the will of the good, that they might be good in that very thing which they are; but they have not accompanied the will of one who is not white, in such a way that this should be its property—that it should be white in that very thing which it is; for they did not flow down from the will of the white. And so, because he who was not white willed them to be white, they are only white;
因為它們既在善之外,又不出自善而存在,然而那「至善本身」既是「存在本身」,又是「善本身」,又是「善的存在本身」。但凡是白的事物,豈不也應當就其所是而言為白嗎?既然那些白的事物乃從上帝的旨意流溢而出,為使它們成為白的?絕非如此。因為「存在」是一事,「為白」是另一事:這是因為那使它們得以存在者固然是善的,卻絕非白的。所以它們伴隨了那善者的旨意,以致就其所是而言為善;但它們並未伴隨那「非白者」的旨意,以致「就其所是而言為白」會成為它的特性;因為它們並非從那「白的旨意」流溢而出。因此,既然那本不是白的祂意願它們成為白的,它們便僅僅是白的;
1:13
Idcirco alia aui dem justa, alia aliud : omnia vero bona.
but because he who was good willed them to be good, they are good in that very thing which they are. According to this reasoning, therefore, ought all things to be just, since he himself is just who willed them to exist? Not even this; for to be good regards essence, but to be just regards act; yet in him to be is the same as to act, and therefore for him to be good is the same as to be just. But for us to be is not the same as to act, for we are not simple; for us, therefore, to be good is not the same as to be just; yet for us it is the same to be all good in that very thing which we are. All things, therefore, are good, but not all are also just: moreover, the good is general, but the just is special, nor does the species descend into all things. For this reason some things are just, others are something else: but all things are good.
