4:1
And when morning came, behold, the host of the Chaldeans surrounded the city.
And the great angel sounded the trumpet, saying: Enter into the city, O host of the Chaldeans; for behold, the gate has been opened for you.
Let the king then enter with his multitude, and take all the people captive.
And Jeremiah took up the keys of the temple, and went out of the city, and cast them before the sun, saying: To you I speak, O sun, take the keys of the temple of God, and guard them until the day in which the Lord shall require them of you.
For we have not been found worthy to guard them, since we have become stewards of falsehood.
And while Jeremiah was still weeping for the people, they led him out with the people, dragging them to Babylon.
But Baruch put dust upon his head, and sat down, and wept this lamentation, saying: Why is Jerusalem laid waste? Because of the sins of the beloved people she was delivered into the hands of enemies, because of our sins and the sins of the people.
But let not the lawless boast, and say, We have prevailed to take the city of God by our own strength; rather it was because of our sins that she was delivered to you.
But our God will have compassion on us, and bring us back to our city; but you shall have no life.
Blessed are our fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, for they departed out of this world, and did not see the destruction of this city.
When Baruch had said these things, he went out of the city weeping and saying: Grieving because of you, O Jerusalem, I have gone out from you.
And he remained sitting in a tomb, while the angels came to him and recounted to him all the things which the Lord made known to him through them.
