and you have troubled me with the most fearful punishments, and by these, as by waters, you have made me sink beneath the surface.
1:4739
'You have removed far from me friend and neighbor, and my acquaintances, because of my misery.'
1:4740
By 'misery' he signifies the time of the Passion.
1:4741
He says, then, that on account of the Passion both his friends and his acquaintances forsook him.
1:4742
既然他順從父,以至於死,且死在十字架上,而在十字架上又被門徒所離棄;
But since he became obedient to the Father unto death, even death on a cross, and on the cross he was forsaken by his disciples;
1:4743
for this reason he says that his Father removed his friends and acquaintances far from him.
1:4744
A PSALM of understanding, of Ethan the Israelite.
1:4745
It is entitled 'of understanding' because a spiritual mind is especially needed in order to comprehend the depth of its mysteries.
1:4746
The facts concerning Heman, that he too was a prophet, have been clearly related in what has gone before.
1:4747
'Your mercies, O Lord, I will sing forever.'
1:4748
And what are the mercies of the Lord which he has wrought for us, which we ought also to sing? Is it not the casting down of the principalities and the powers, and the very dominion of the devil itself;
1:4749
and to free us from sin and death?
1:4750
'To generation and generation I will declare your truth with my mouth.'
1:4751
父的真理就是子,聖徒們世世代代都將祂宣揚於口中;
The truth of the Father is the Son, whom the saints carry upon their mouth to generation and generation;
1:4752
for the word is, as it were, from the apostolic choir.
1:4753
'Mercy shall be built up forever.'
1:4754
that is, it shall be constructed, that is, it shall be raised up.
1:4755
For that which is built up is, in a manner, raised up and rises.
1:4756
And this is the salvation and grace that comes through Christ.
1:4757
The mercy of God builds up mankind, while his truth prepares the holy powers.
1:4758
'Your truth shall be established.'
1:4759
Just as the salvation that comes through Christ is called mercy and grace, so again it is also called truth; or else, he says, it has been raised up even to the heavens through the blood, whether on earth or in heaven.
1:4760
'Abraham,' he says, 'and Jacob;'
1:4761
For indeed to these he gave the promises concerning Christ, according to what was said:
1:4762
'And in your seed shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed.'
1:4763
And where did he swear, if not in saying to him:
1:4764
'And it shall come to pass, when your days are fulfilled, and you sleep with your fathers,
1:4765
there shall arise from your seed another, who shall be from your body,
1:4766
and I will establish his kingdom forever.
1:4767
'He shall build a house for my name,
1:4768
and I will set up his kingdom forever.'
1:4769
'I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son.'
1:4770
'The heavens shall confess your wonders.'
1:4771
This he says with reference to Christ who was born, and to the angels bringing good tidings to the shepherds, saying:
1:4772
and that a multitude of another heavenly host also appeared, saying:
1:4773
'For who among the clouds shall be equal to the Lord?' For even though, he says, the Only-begotten became man, and let himself down into voluntary self-emptying, and took the form of a servant,
1:4774
但即便如此,他仍是無可比擬地超越萬有,甚至超越諸天之上的能力;
yet even so he is beyond comparison above all things, even above the heavenly powers;
1:4775
因為那些天使具有僕役的等次;
for those possess the rank of servants;
1:4776
'But indeed neither among the sons of God is there any like him.'
1:4777
And this they themselves testify, saying, 'Of his fullness have we all received.'
1:4778
He, then, gives as God, while they are enriched with what comes from him.
1:4779
'God, who is glorified in the council of the saints, great and terrible,'
1:4780
...in form; yet hearing him say,
1:4781
and, 'Before Abraham came to be, I am,'
1:4782
thus the saints, on the contrary, glorify him, and call him great and terrible.
1:4783
And this is clear from the fact that Peter, as though from the mouth of all, cried out:
1:4784
'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God':
1:4785
when he rebuked the sea and the winds—
1:4786
「你管轄海的狂傲;
'You rule over the might of the sea;
1:4787
and he is the one who set the sand as a boundary for the sea, and said to it,
1:4788
'Thus far shall you come, and no farther.'
1:4789
And he showed this to be true, when he rebuked both the sea and the winds, as he was sailing together with the disciples.
1:4790
'And the surging of its waves you calm.'
1:4791
'You humbled the proud one as one slain.'
1:4792
For he is the one who bound the strong and proud one, and gave to his own the power to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the power of the enemy.
1:4793
「天是屬你的,地也是屬你的;
'The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours;
1:4794
the world and its fullness you have founded.'
1:4795
'The north and the sea you created.'
1:4796
By these he signifies the four quarters of the world:
1:4797
藉「北方」指北方之地,藉「海」指西方之地;
by the north, the northern regions, and by the sea, the regions of the west;
1:4798
因為聖經稱西方為「海」;
for Scripture calls the west 'sea';
1:4799
藉黑門山指南方;
and by Mount Hermon, the south;
1:4800
and by Mount Tabor, again, the east.
1:4801
'Yours is the arm, with might.'
1:4802
For even though he became man and appeared as one of us, yet the surpassing excellence of his majesty was made manifest.
1:4803
'Blessed is the people that knows the joyful shout.'
1:4804
Having proclaimed the incarnation of the Only-begotten, he fittingly calls blessed those who have come to know his mystery.
1:4805
And this is to sing him the songs of victory.
1:4806
For the joyful shout is the song that arises over fallen enemies.
1:4807
And he arrayed himself in battle on our behalf, and has conquered the opposing powers.
1:4808
'Lord, in the light of your face they shall walk, and in your name they shall rejoice.'
1:4809
He calls his holy apostles blessed, because indeed it was in his name and by his power that they did whatever wonders they did.
1:4810
'And in your good pleasure our horn shall be exalted.'
1:4811
He speaks, then, as it were to the Father:
1:4812
既然你樂意差遣獨生子,因此我們的榮耀便被高舉興起;
Since you were well pleased to send the Only-begotten, for this reason our glory has been raised up;
1:4813
for we were glorified, having been raised together with Christ and having reigned together with him.
1:4814
'Then you spoke in a vision to your sons.'
1:4815
'Then'—instead of 'formerly,' he says—that is, through prophetic visions you spoke to your sons; and by 'sons' he means those who have been called to the dignity of adoption—to them, he says, you spoke.
1:4816
'I have laid help upon one who is mighty.' It is as though he were saying something like this:
1:4817
父所賜給我們作幫助的那位有能力者,無疑就是基督;
the mighty one, whom the Father has given to us for help, is assuredly Christ;
1:4818
因為他確實是萬軍之主;
for indeed he is the Lord of hosts;
1:4819
and yet also a servant, because he appeared in the form of a servant.
1:4820
'With my holy oil I have anointed him.'
1:4821
道本是神,卻按肉身由女子所生,以人的樣式顯出,同時仍保有祂原是神的身份;
While the Word was God, he was born according to the flesh of a woman, and came forth as man, remaining, as he was, God;
1:4822
then, having received the anointing for your sake, he was named Christ.
1:4823
For the Word, being God and existing as king before the ages, made our condition his own, that we too might be enriched with what is his.
1:4824
'For my hand shall assist him.'
1:4825
'But the Father who abides in me, he himself does the works.'
1:4826
And this is what the Father now says concerning him:
1:4827
'For my hand shall assist him, and my arm shall strengthen him.'
1:4828
'The enemy shall not prevail against him.'
1:4829
but the scheme proved profitless to Satan and to the Jews, and their undertaking turned out to leave them utterly exposed and unguarded.
1:4830
For the Savior came back to life on the third day, having trampled down death and despoiled Hades:
1:4831
And he ascended to the Father and God who is in the heavens.
1:4832
And he is at the right hand of the throne of majesty in the heights, ruling over all things together with his own begetter.
1:4833
Therefore that which was said is true: 'The enemy shall not prevail against him.'
1:4834
'And I will cut down his enemies before his face.'
1:4835
For they have been handed over to the Roman army, and have utterly perished.
1:4836
'And my truth and my mercy shall be with him.'
1:4837
By 'truth' he means the worship in spirit and in truth which Christ introduced to us, according to what was said to the woman of Samaria:
1:4838
'God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.'
1:4839
And indeed God has wrought mercy toward us through none other than his only-begotten Son.
1:4840
'And in my name shall his horn be exalted.'
1:4841
因為凡最合宜地屬於父的名號,子自己也照樣因此得著榮耀;
For by the very names which most properly belong to the Father, the Son himself is also glorified;
1:4842
因為他自己就是真理;
for he himself is the truth;
1:4843
而父按其本性既是生命,也被稱為生命;子也同樣是這生命;
and the Father both is and is called 'life' according to nature, and this again the Son also is;
1:4844
'I am the resurrection and the life.'
1:4845
This he was saying to his own Father: 'All that is mine is yours, and yours is mine.'
1:4846
'And I will set his hand upon the sea.'
1:4847
「海」,如我們先前所說,是指西方的地域;
By 'sea,' as we have said before, he means the region in the west;
1:4848
and by 'rivers' he means the land between the rivers, that is, the east.
1:4849
He says, then, that his activity shall be extended into the whole inhabited world.
1:4850
'And in the rivers, his right hand.'
1:4851
In the sea is set the hand of Christ, and in the rivers his right hand.
1:4852
然而,只要他願意,海也能變成河;
Yet if he wills, the sea becomes a river;
1:4853
and again the river, if it keeps the river of living water flowing out of his belly, becomes a sea.
1:4854
'You are my Father, my God.'
1:4855
Here again, in accordance with the economy, he who was made flesh calls his own Father 'God,' saying:
1:4856
'I am going to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.'
1:4857
For the prophet, prophesying concerning him as a child being born, called him 'Mighty God, Father of the age to come.'
1:4858
'Forever I will keep my mercy for him, and my covenant.'
1:4859
He says this to the people who have believed through him.
1:4860
By 'mercy' he means the forgiveness that comes through faith.
1:4861
因為前約已經因其軟弱無益而終止;
For the first covenant has ceased on account of its weakness and unprofitableness;
1:4862
for the law made nothing perfect.
1:4863
'And I will establish his seed forever and ever.'
1:4864
因為基督徒之名必不止息,福音敬拜的能力也是如此;
For the name of Christians shall not cease, nor the power of the evangelical worship;
1:4865
rather it shall be continual and unceasing.
1:4866
This is similar to what is said elsewhere:
1:4867
'His seed remains forever.'
1:4868
'who also remains forever.'
1:4869
For it is not among the things possible that one who is God, and truly the Son of God, should not be eternal in every respect and altogether.
1:4870
'And his throne shall be as the sun before me.'
1:4871
當知基督的寶座就是教會;
Understand the throne of Christ to be the Church;
1:4872
He says, then, that the Church of Christ shall flash like lightning and illumine all that is under heaven, and shall remain continually, as the sun and the moon remain.
1:4873
For this saying goes thus:
1:4874
'And his throne shall be as the sun before me, and as the moon perfected forever, and the witness in heaven is faithful.'
1:4875
'But you have rejected and despised him; you have spurned your anointed one.'
1:4876
The blessed prophets speak of the things that came to pass at the precious cross.
1:4877
They speak, then, as though addressing the Father and God:
1:4878
'but you have rejected and despised him;'
1:4879
And 'you have rejected and despised' means: 'you have permitted him to be rejected and to be despised.'
1:4880
因為並非父自己棄絕、輕看自己的兒子;
For it was not the Father who rejected and despised his own Son;
1:4881
乃是猶太人做了這事;
rather, it was the Jews who did this;
1:4882
yet by the permission of God the Father.
1:4883
And this is what was said:
1:4884
'He who did not spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all.'
1:4885
'You have overturned the covenant of your servant.'
1:4886
He says: 'You have deferred fulfilling the promises concerning him;'
1:4887
saying, 'you have overturned the covenant of your servant.'
1:4888
'For you promised,' he says, 'that it would remain forever;'
1:4889
and this was the covenant made by you concerning him.
1:4890
'But the Jews crucified him, and he was numbered among the dead.'
1:4891
'For he suffered,' he says, 'and was crucified;'
1:4892
'therefore you have overturned the covenant of your servant.'
1:4893
'You have profaned his sanctuary to the ground.'
1:4894
'You have cast his glory to the ground,' he says;
1:4895
for when he came to suffer, he was regarded by the lawless Jews as a mere man.
1:4896
然而他並沒有仍舊死去,他乃是照先知所說「在死人中是自由的」;
But he did not remain dead, he who is 'free among the dead,' according to the voice of the prophet;
1:4897
nor indeed did the suffering bring upon him any dishonor at all; rather, he was glorified all the more through abolishing him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and through setting free the race of mankind.
1:4898
Yet the prophets speak of the things that came to pass.
1:4899
'You have thrown down all his hedges.'
1:4900
他所說的「他的籬笆和堡壘」,是指眾聖使徒,他們眾人竟都撇下他,因懼怕而逃跑了;
By 'his hedges and fortifications' he means the holy apostles, who indeed all forsook him and fled in fear;
1:4901
'You have made his fortifications a thing of cowardice.'
1:4902
'You have gladdened all his enemies.'
1:4903
For they rejoiced and wagged their heads at him, seeing him hanging upon the tree.
1:4904
'You have turned back the help of his sword.'
1:4905
Since he has not immediately punished those who crucified the only-begotten Son of God the Father, though they deserved to pay the ultimate penalty, but because of his great love for mankind has granted even to them a time of repentance—that which comes through baptism—
1:4906
for this reason he is said to have turned back the help of his sword.
1:4907
'You turned away' is used in place of 'you restrained.'
1:4908
'You have made his purification to cease.'
1:4909
'You have made to cease' is used instead of 'you cast down.'
1:4910
'You cast down,' therefore, he says—that is, you overthrew the belief that he is pure.
1:4911
For he was contrived to be wicked, and was condemned as a sinner, and was reckoned among the lawless.
1:4912
'You have cast his throne down to the ground.'
1:4913
Since he suffered in the flesh, and became free among the dead—
1:4914
那些將他釘十字架的人,以為他既受了苦,就已萎縮消逝,甚至完全不再存在、不再被稱述;
those who crucified him supposed that, having suffered, he had shrunk away and had utterly ceased both to exist and to be named;
1:4915
for this reason he expounds the suppositions of those who crucified him, saying:
1:4916
'You have cast his throne down to the ground.'
1:4917
'How long, O Lord, will you turn away forever? Will your wrath burn like fire?' That is: how long will the presumptuous deeds of the Jews prevail, who were so zealous for the crucifixion of the Only-begotten and our Savior? But Symmachus has:
1:4918
'but do you kindle your wrath like fire at the remembrance of our sins?' 'Remember what my substance is.'
1:4919
'You made man for incorruption,' he says, 'and fashioned him according to your image;'
1:4920
'but he came under corruption through deceit,' he says.
1:4921
Therefore grant incorruption, that they may be saved, even as your creation was fashioned to be.
1:4922
'Where are your ancient mercies, O Lord?' The ancient mercies of God, he says, are the restoration to incorruption that was appointed before the foundation of the world.
1:4923
'Remember, O Lord, the reproach of your servants.'
1:4924
主啊,既然你的仇敵凌辱了我,聲稱那論到我、賜給列邦的應許都是虛假的;
Since, O Lord, your enemies have reproached me, claiming that the promises given to the nations concerning me are false;
1:4925
而這些應許正是:他們必得拯救,並脫離死亡與罪惡;
and these promises were that they should be saved, and set free from death and sin;
1:4926
他們卻定睛於我的死亡而加以譏誚;
and they reproached me, looking to my death;
1:4927
and declared those promises to be vain.
1:4928
因此我懇求你記念;
for this reason I ask you to remember;
1:4929
for they reproached the ransom-price of your Christ, he says.
1:4930
而他的贖價,就是他的死與他的血,那為世界的救恩所付出的贖金;
And his ransom-price is his death and blood, the price of redemption given for the salvation of the world;
1:4931
which they also reproached, supposing him to have been held fast by death.
1:4932
但那在死人中自由的,並未停留在那裡;
But he who is free among the dead did not remain there;
1:4933
rather, he rose on the third day.
1:4934
'Blessed be the Lord forever. Amen, amen.'
1:4935
This is said since he has now risen and ascended into the heavens, and is blessed—that is, glorified—forever together with his own Father.
1:4936
'A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.'
1:4937
他說,這篇禱文乃是摩西以隱秘的方式記錄下來並傳留後世的;
This prayer, he says, Moses wrote down among hidden things and handed it down;
1:4938
so that those living in each successive age might know how they ought to make confession when they fall into the calamities that came upon them in the last times, after the disobedience and bloodguilt committed against the Lord.
1:4939
但為要使其不致隨時光流逝而被遺忘,便將它編入了詩篇之中;
But so that it might not be given over to oblivion with the passage of time, it has been included among the Psalms;
1:4940
and fittingly placed after the eighty-eighth Psalm, which also signifies the Passion of the Lord.
1:4941
'Lord, you have become a refuge for us from generation to generation.'
1:4942
Since he is about to call upon God for mercy, he fittingly frames his preface from the benefits which God had already bestowed many times.
1:4943
One may see how he showed benefit in every generation by looking at what happened under Pharaoh, what happened under Joshua, and what happened at Babylon.
1:4944
'Before the mountains were made, and the earth was formed.'
1:4945
Since, looking at the flesh of the Lord, they supposed him to be a mere man, saying:
1:4946
'You are not yet thirty years old, and have you seen Abraham?' And this especially became for them the cause of their fall: their ignorance of his divinity.
1:4947
'Do not turn man back to humiliation.'
1:4948
And he asks that, since God has called all the nations to the knowledge of the truth, he himself also might be turned back to God.
1:4949
'Return, O backsliding children, and I will heal your wounds.'
1:4950
Since, therefore, we have turned back, do not turn us back to humiliation.
1:4951
'For a thousand years in your sight, O Lord...'
1:4952
他所指的是律法之下敬拜的時期,尤其是自那聖殿建成之後最為興盛之時;
He speaks of the age of worship under the Law, during which, especially once the divine temple had been completed, it flourished;
1:4953
For from Solomon, who built the house, until the siege that took place after the precious cross, this span extends to a thousand years.
1:4954
'But these thousand years,' he says, 'may be reckoned as one day before you;'
1:4955
or rather, a small fraction of a day.
1:4956
而他恰當地將救主降臨以前的那段時期比作黑夜;
And he fittingly likens to night the age before the coming of the Savior;
1:4957
inasmuch as all mankind was, as it were, in an untimely state and in confusion, because the Sun of Righteousness had not yet risen upon them.
1:4958
'Their years shall be as things of no account. In the morning...'
1:4959
Their years—clearly, the years of those who denied you—shall be held in great contempt.
1:4960
For they became something trampled underfoot by both men and demons, since they denied him who redeems and saves them.
1:4961
'In the morning let it flourish, and pass away.'
1:4962
「早晨」意指基督在西奈山向他們顯現的那段時期;
By 'morning' they signify the time of Christ's manifestation to them on Mount Sinai;
1:4963
and by 'grass' is meant the worship of the Law, since it was destined to wither away shortly afterward.
1:4964
他將「晚上」稱為末世的時期,獨生子正是在此時顯現;
He calls 'evening' the time at the end of the age, in which the Only-begotten also appeared;
1:4965
in which the flourishing of the worship of the Law likewise passed away, having been hardened by the deceit of disobedience.
1:4966
'For we have been consumed in your wrath.'
1:4967
They clearly declare the calamities that came upon them because of their own sins.
1:4968
And these things apply both to the Jews and to all mankind.
1:4969
For indeed human nature, paying the penalty for its transgressions, was subjected to calamities, and is engulfed by billows of every kind.
1:4970
And the Jews, because of the wickedness of their intent, fell from freedom.
1:4971
You have set our transgressions before you.
1:4972
You did not pass over our transgressions, he says, seeing that we ourselves called them down upon our own heads, because we had said:
1:4973
'His blood be on us and on our children.'
1:4974
Our lifetime lies exposed in the light of your countenance.
1:4975
Our life, and the wicked deeds done in it, appear before your face.
1:4976
For you were ignorant of nothing that has been done by us, from beginning to end.
1:4977
For all our days have failed, and in your wrath we have been consumed.
1:4978
他說:罪激起了你向我們發的忿怒;
Sin, he says, stirred up your wrath against us;
1:4979
而忿怒又招致了懲罰;
and wrath brought on punishment;
1:4980
and punishment brought on sorrows.
1:4981
For in sorrows we have spent our brief life.
1:4982
Our years were spun out like a spider's web.
1:4983
他說:人的本性,沒有任何堅固或穩定之物;
Human nature, he says, possesses nothing firm or stable;
1:4984
like a spider's web, it is easily torn apart.
1:4985
The days of our years, in themselves, are seventy years.
1:4986
These words resemble those spoken by the patriarch Jacob:
1:4987
'My days are few and evil, and have not attained to the days of my fathers.'
1:4988
固然也有些人,活得比所說的年歲更長久;
There are, indeed, some who live longer than the time stated;
1:4989
but that happens in the case of a few.
1:4990
What he teaches here is what is common, and holds true for the majority.
1:4991
For just as he made no mention of those who meet their end prematurely, so too, in speaking of long life, he has left out those who are exceedingly aged.
1:4992
But nevertheless, he says, even this brief span of time is filled with sorrow and toil.
1:4993
'For gentleness has come upon us, and we shall be chastened.'
1:4994
既然我們的生命,如同死物一般卑微,我們也不知道此後,在你的權能之下,我們將會遭遇什麼;
Since our life is a dead and worthless thing, and we do not know what will befall us hereafter at the hand of your power;
1:4995
for this reason, he says, chasten us gently.
1:4996
For 'has come,' he says, stands in place of 'may it come.'
1:4997
And they ask to partake of the instruction that comes through Christ, who is the right hand of the Father:
1:4998
'Make your right hand thus known to me.'
1:4999
'Make known' is to be taken in common with what follows, so that it reads:
1:5000
「又使我們認識你的右手」,亦即基督;
'And make known to us your right hand,' that is, Christ;
1:5001
並使我們認識那些心中懷有智慧的人;
and make known to us those who have wisdom in their heart;
1:5002
and these would be the holy apostles and evangelists, through whom we also learned the ways of conversion.
1:5003
'We were filled in the morning with your mercy.'
1:5004
As though they had already found the fulfillment of their prayer, they speak in this manner:
1:5005
For the Sun of Righteousness will also rise for them at the consummation of this age.
1:5006
'And look upon your servants, and upon your works.'
1:5007
'Look' again stands in place of 'you have looked,' that is, 'you have visited your servants and the works of your hands.'
1:5008
'And let the brightness of the Lord our God be upon us.'
1:5009
而認識神的光,使我們變得光輝燦爛、聲名遠播;
And the light of the knowledge of God has made us radiant and renowned;
1:5010
and the Jews, after their return, again became conspicuous.
1:5011
'And direct the works of our hands.'
1:5012
這工乃是在新約中所完成的。因為在舊約中,有各式各樣的祭物;
This is the work accomplished in the New [Covenant]. For in the Old there were various sacrifices;
1:5013
but in the New, only the Son is sacrificed.
1:5014
'And direct the work of our hands.'
1:5015
「手的眾工」是指每一項個別的行為;
'The works of the hands' is each individual deed;
1:5016
but 'the work of the hands' is the knowledge that arises from these.
1:5017
……那些掌權者,以及這黑暗世代的掌權者,並那邪惡的屬靈勢力,以及那該詛咒的撒但本身;
...the authorities, and the world-rulers of this darkness, and the spiritual forces of wickedness, and the accursed Satan himself;
1:5018
and these are also signified in many ways through the words now before us.
1:5019
Both the terror by night, and the arrow in darkness, and the destruction and the noonday demon, and the thousand and the ten thousand, and the asp, and the basilisk, and the lion, and the dragon.
1:5020
Over all these he proclaims victory for the man of God.
1:5021
'He who dwells in the help of the Most High.'
1:5022
The prophetic Spirit calls blessed the man who has made Christ — who is also the Most High — his help and support.
1:5023
For how is he not blessed, who has been deemed worthy to have the God of heaven as his protector? 'He shall lodge under the shelter of the God of heaven.'
1:5024
He who abides in this help is sheltered and guarded.
1:5025
And who is it that says to the Lord — that is, the man who trusts in him and leans upon his salvation? 'For he himself will deliver you from the snare.'
1:5026
He taught beforehand that the opposing powers are signified through these things.
1:5027
'He will overshadow you with his shoulders.'
1:5028
When the man of God had said that God himself will deliver him from the snare of the hunters and from turbulent words, the prophetic Spirit answers, encouraging him and gently leading him on toward spiritual courage:
1:5029
'He will overshadow you with his shoulders;'
1:5030
'He will cover you under the shadow of his wings;'
1:5031
and indeed he will shield you with armor as well.
1:5032
And when this has come to pass, none of the opposing powers will do you harm.
1:5033
'From the arrow that flies by day.'
1:5034
He has here called a certain unclean power 'an arrow.'
1:5035
'From the destruction, and from the noonday demon.'
1:5036
It is not some demonic affliction of midday.
1:5037
For he says that the noonday demon is that of listlessness.
1:5038
'A thousand shall fall at your side.'
1:5039
「旁邊」一詞,意指左側,這是頗為恰當的;
'Side' signifies the left part, and quite fittingly so;
1:5040
and he says that it is against this side that the thousands lay their plots.
1:5041
yet at your right hand, the ten thousands
1:5042
For the multitude of the evil powers attempts to undo the favorable outcomes of our affairs, and the stronger and more marvelous of our virtues.
1:5043
But you will only look on with your eyes.
1:5044
他說:你將絲毫不受那些圖謀害你之人的傷害;
You will suffer no harm at all, he says, from those who plot against you;
1:5045
but it will happen to you to see your enemies fallen.
1:5046
You have made the Most High your refuge.
1:5047
The prophetic Spirit speaks in reply through the man of God, declaring how great is the gain of hope placed in God.
1:5048
No evils shall come near you.
1:5049
For the nature of evil comes from outside, whereas virtue has its origin from within.
1:5050
For God made man upright, but man, having sought after wicked reasonings, drew evil upon himself from outside.
1:5051
And no scourge shall come near your dwelling.
1:5052
He exhorts them to take courage and to suffer nothing unpleasant, since he believes that an angel is sent down as a helper to those who believe in God.
1:5053
For he will give his angels charge concerning you.
1:5054
This he also said in the thirty-third psalm:
1:5055
The angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear him, and will deliver them.
1:5056
Let us also hear the patriarch Jacob saying:
1:5057
The angel who delivers me from all my evils
1:5058
And the great Abraham, encouraging his servant, said:
1:5059
God will send his angel before your face, and you shall take from there a wife for Isaac my son.
1:5060
From every side, then, we learn that the God of all also guards, through angels, those who trust in him.
1:5061
To keep you in all your ways.
1:5062
He who stumbles in nothing, this one is kept in all his ways.
1:5063
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
1:5064
The foot signifies the soul, and the stone signifies sin.
1:5065
You shall tread upon the asp and the basilisk.
1:5066
他說:神的人哪,你不但不會遭受任何可怕的事,而且還要親眼看見那些邪靈的群眾被制伏在你的腳下;
Not only, he says, will you suffer nothing terrible, O man of God, but you will also see the very multitudes of the spirits brought down beneath your own feet;
1:5067
so that with complete confidence you will also trample upon their heads.
1:5068
Because he has hoped in me, I will also deliver him.
1:5069
He brings in the person of God, promising salvation as the reward of faith.
1:5070
...the God of all has said, teaching what the fruit of hope is.
1:5071
他說:因為他已經以對我的盼望作為防護,我就要救他脫離前面所提那些看得見和看不見的仇敵;
For I will deliver him, he says, from the aforementioned visible and invisible enemies, since he has fortified himself with hope in me;
1:5072
For this reason I will guard him, and I will hear him when he calls, and I will receive his supplication.
1:5073
I will shelter him, because he has known my name.
1:5074
他說:我不但要救我自己的子民脫離那些謀害他們的人,而且還要賜給他們無窮盡的生命;
Not only, he says, will I deliver those who are my own from those who plot against them, but I will also grant them unending life;
1:5075
and indeed I will also deem them worthy of my own salvation.
1:5076
May this salvation of ours be Jesus Christ, who both leads us into the new contest and prepares us to reign together with him.
1:5077
He will cry out to me, and I will hearken to him.
1:5078
And having cried out to me with the loud voice of his soul, he will find me hearkening and nodding assent to him.
1:5079
For I am always present with him, even if he happens to be in distress.
1:5080
With length of days I will fill him, and I will show him my salvation.
1:5081
May this salvation be our Lord Jesus Christ himself, who has led us into the new age, and who also prepares us to reign together with him.
1:5082
A PSALM. A song for the Sabbath day.
1:5083
The sabbath-rest, that is, the Sabbath, would be the coming inheritance, since a rest will indeed succeed the labors here, once we have plainly received our rewards.
1:5084
He therefore praises that future rest which is to come.
1:5085
It is good to give thanks to the Lord.
1:5086
He puts forward praise, he says, and promises to recount it unceasingly day and night for the things the Only-begotten has done.
1:5087
And what has he done, other than that he has prepared the resurrection for us? — To declare your mercy in the morning.
1:5088
To proclaim your mercy at dawn, and your faithfulness by night.
1:5089
On the ten-stringed psaltery, with a song upon the harp.
1:5090
For you have made me glad, O Lord, in your work.
1:5091
For as I behold your creations and your ineffable dispensations, I exult and rejoice, and by the soul's delight I move my tongue to hymnody.
1:5092
How great are your works, O Lord!
1:5093
As for me, he says, while hymning your works, I am also amazed at the depth of your thoughts, which you have wrought in your dispensation.
1:5094
But the foolish do not understand the depth of the mystery.
1:5095
When sinners sprang up like grass
1:5096
Those who do not understand the mystery, he says, will be like grass, having, that is, no depth, and they will quickly fall and wither away.
1:5097
And my horn shall be exalted like that of the unicorn.
1:5098
When, he says, the enemies perish and are scattered, then indeed my horn — that is, the kingdom that has been prepared — will become manifest.
1:5099
但我們這些認識你的人,既已看見你仇敵的傾覆,就必因你而歡欣,並懷有崇高的心志;
But we who have knowledge of you, having beheld the overthrow of your enemies, will exult in you and think great things;
1:5100
inasmuch as we have indeed been delivered from the error of polytheism, and worship you as the true God who is.
1:5101
For here again he has introduced the unicorn, so that by the one horn he might signify the one God.
1:5102
因為正如那動物從天性領受了一隻角;
For just as that animal received one horn from nature;
1:5103
so also the disciples of piety will worship one Godhead.
1:5104
And my old age shall be in rich oil.
1:5105
他說:在我所忍受的勞苦之後,那時我必彷彿用油膏抹,成為君尊的祭司;
After the labors, he says, which I endure, then indeed I shall make use, as it were, of oil for a royal priesthood;
1:5106
and this shall be for me the reward of my long labors.
