1:691
我用這些話並非徒然,而是因為我曾體驗過你的仁愛;
I did not use these words in vain, but because I had experience of your loving-kindness;
1:692
for you heard me pleading many times.
1:693
God is entirely an ear, as one who hears all things.
1:694
["I have cried out," and what follows.
1:695
I do not cry out in vain, but since you have often heard me, I ask now also to be heard.
1:696
And crying out to God is also intensified understanding.] ["Their fat they closed up"
1:697
"Fat" signifies the most intense prosperity of the enemies.] "They have set their eyes to bow down to the earth."
1:698
"Your sword against the enemies of your hand."
1:699
Every soul of the righteous, and especially of those who draw sinners from impiety to the fear of God, is, as it were, a sword sharpened against the spirits of wickedness.
1:700
Who, then, could the enemies of God's hand be, other than those who resist faith in his Only-Begotten, who is indeed also his hand? "O Lord, divide them off from the few upon the earth."
1:701
He prays that the impious be separated from the few, as if to be divided in some manner.
1:702
But who are 'the few' but those concerning whom it has been said:
1:703
'Many are called, but few are chosen'? And 'their belly was filled with your hidden things.'
1:704
他說,他們享盡了一切珍貴之物;
They enjoyed, he says, all things precious;
1:705
therefore they also kicked back in this way, so as even to transgress the law.
1:706
'Of your hidden things' instead of saying, 'with those punishments of which you hold knowledge in secret—I myself do not know [what they are]—fill their bellies with these,' speaking periphrastically in place of 'them.'
1:707
'They were sated with sons, and left the remainder to their infants.'
1:708
They were filled, he says, with every transgression, and this they passed on also to their children.
1:709
[And this they left to the infants of their sons, that is, down even to their descendants.] 'But I shall appear in righteousness before your face.'
1:710
他說,我必不與那些人相似,也不因同樣的東西而飽足;
I shall not be made like those men, he says, nor shall I be sated with the same things;
1:711
but I shall be filled with your glory through righteous works.
1:712
The psalm contains the uprising of enemies and the calling upon God for an alliance, the descent of the Only-begotten and his ascension, and, after the ascension, the deeds wrought against the demons, and the rejection of Israel, and the calling of the Gentiles.
1:713
The phrase 'out of the hand of his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul' would be referred to the intelligible enemies and their ruler.
1:714
'I will love you, O Lord, my strength;'
1:715
'the Lord is my firmament and my refuge.'
1:716
他因體會到神的恩惠——這是最大的恩賜——便將愛獻給祂,我是說「愛」;
Perceiving the benefits of God—which is the greatest gift—he dedicates to him love, I mean;
1:717
which the Savior also placed first among the commandments.
1:718
'Praising, I called upon the Lord, and I shall be saved from my enemies.'
1:719
在此我們一方面受教導,要為已蒙的美善之事獻上感謝;
Here we are taught, on the one hand, to confess thanks for the good things already given;
1:720
and, on the other, again to ask for the things that are lacking.
1:721
Then he narrates the manifold uprisings of the enemies.
1:722
'The pangs of death encompassed me.'
1:723
He makes mention here, he says, of no mortal war at all, but of unseen powers encircling his soul from within.
1:724
'And the torrents of lawlessness troubled me.'
1:725
'The pangs of Hades encircled me;'
1:726
'the snares of death came upon me beforehand.'
1:727
「不法的急流」就是那些不法的思念;
'The torrents of lawlessness' are the lawless thoughts;
1:728
and these same thoughts are also called 'pangs' when they linger within us, and again 'snares,' putting us to death through sin committed in act.
1:729
'And the earth was shaken, and became tremulous.'
1:730
他在此引介主降臨之時所發生的事;
He introduces the things that came to pass then, at the descent of the Lord;
1:731
因為凡住在地上的人都被震動了;
for all who dwell on the earth were moved;
1:732
and every land was filled with the report concerning him.
1:733
'And the foundations of the mountains were troubled.'
1:734
'Mountains' are the evil powers that lift themselves up against the glory of God.
1:735
And by 'their foundations' he means the thoughts that lie deep within them.
1:736
'And they were shaken, because God was angered against them.'
1:737
'Smoke went up in his wrath.'
1:738
Being angered, he says, he quenched their fire, by which of old they used to burn up men.
1:739
And he sets forth the smoke as a symbol of this.
1:740
'And fire shall blaze forth from his face.'
1:741
For these things the Son of God works invisibly against the opposing powers, quenching their fire with another fire that is better and more powerful.
1:742
[For the demons, seeing the Lord at his coming, were burned from before his face.] 'Coals were kindled from him.'
1:743
Those who were illumined through participation in the divine fire.
1:744
'And he bowed the heavens, and came down.'
1:745
He most clearly prophesies the descent of the Lord.
1:746
And it may well be indicative of the word:
1:747
'He humbled himself unto death.'
1:748
'And darkness was under his feet.'
1:749
這顯明了他在救贖經綸中行程的隱祕,以及神的不可見;
This signifies the hiddenness of his journey in the dispensation, and the invisibility of God;
1:750
so that we might not, through what he has said, be drawn into corporeal notions.
1:751
'He mounted upon the cherubim and flew; he flew upon the wings of the winds.'
1:752
他藉此顯明了自己的升天;
By these words he signifies his ascension;
1:753
「基路伯」與「風的翅膀」是指那雲彩,〔就是那接他上去的雲彩;
by 'cherubim' and 'wings of the winds' he means the cloud [which received him up;
1:754
or the swiftness of his manifestation, the speed of his coming and his help], concerning which it is written in the Acts:
1:755
'And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight.'
1:756
'And he made darkness his hiding place.'
1:757
[This signifies] the unseen and hidden sojourn of the Savior among men.
1:758
'His tabernacle was round about him.'
1:759
By 'his tabernacle' he signifies the holy Church, in which he has promised to make his dwelling.
1:760
And 'round about him,' he says, according to what has been said:
1:761
'Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.'
1:762
'Dark water in the clouds of the air.'
1:763
He says this because the words concerning him lie obscurely among the prophets, who were also called 'clouds.'
1:764
'At the brightness before him the clouds passed by.'
1:765
The light, he says, of his manifestation made the prophecies manifest.
1:766
[And since threats too are contained in the prophetic words, he hinted at these as well through the hail and the coals.
1:767
Or thus: from the shining forth of the preaching, the apostles, going before him after the manner of clouds, watered the world.
1:768
And the hailstones are forms of punishment warding off those who disbelieve.] 'Hail and coals of fire.'
1:769
And just as, when freeing Israel from the Egyptians, he rained down hail and fire, so also, when freeing all the nations from the slavery of the demons, he rained down hail and coals of fire.
1:770
And these would be the punitive powers, by which he brought down the intelligible Egyptians.
1:771
And the fountains of the waters were seen
1:772
仇敵被毀滅之後,水的泉源就顯現了;
After the destruction of the enemies, the fountains of the waters were seen;
1:773
也就是福音的救恩之道,它也成了普世的根基;
that is, the saving word of the Gospel, which also became the foundation of the world;
1:774
for upon it we have been built up.
1:775
Understand by 'fountains' the holy prophets, inasmuch as they well up the saving word.
1:776
For thus it is written concerning them:
1:777
'And you shall draw water with gladness out of the fountains of salvation.'
1:778
And by 'the foundations of the world,' understand the Scripture of the all-wise Moses.
1:779
For we have found it laid down therein, first of all, as the foundation of faith and the knowledge of God, travailing together with the prophets, in types, with the mystery of Christ.
1:780
'Were seen,' then, is used instead of 'were made manifest.'
1:781
也就是說,你當把「泉源」與「普天之下的根基」理解為眾聖使徒;
That is, understand by 'fountains' and 'foundations of that which is under heaven' the holy apostles;
1:782
for they too well up the saving word, and they laid down the faith as a foundation for that which is under heaven.
1:783
And again, understand by 'fountains of waters' and 'foundations of the world' the saving baptism.
1:784
'At your rebuke, O Lord'
1:785
One must supply the sense: 'the aforementioned enemies were destroyed.'
1:786
'At the blast of the breath of your wrath'
1:787
神並不立即懲罰犯罪的人;
God does not punish sinners immediately;
1:788
而是預先宣告祂忿怒的懲罰;
rather, he proclaims beforehand the punishments of his wrath;
1:789
'For I will chasten them in the wrath of their affliction.'
1:790
And this is what it means for him to breathe forth the spirit of his wrath.
1:791
'He took hold of me out of many waters'
1:792
By 'waters' he means the trials.
1:793
By 'waters' he means the trials.
1:794
「祂拉住了我」,也就是拉住了人的本性;
'He took me,' that is, he took hold of human nature;
1:795
for on the day of Pentecost about three thousand souls were baptized by the apostles. 'He shall deliver me from my mighty enemies, and from those who hate me.'
1:796
He has passed on to what was done concerning his sin and his repentance.
1:797
What he says is this:
1:798
a support, since I was about to be overturned and to suffer a great fall, had I, after my sin, fallen into complete apostasy.
1:799
But nevertheless he will deliver me completely, granting forgiveness of sin at the prophesied time of his coming, and the Lord will do this, dealing kindly with me, 'because he took delight in me.'
1:800
For if he had not taken delight in me, he would not have sent his prophet to me.
1:801
'And the Lord will reward me'
1:802
'I am persuaded,' he says, 'that at the time of his righteous judgment, not remembering my sins, he will reward me according to my righteousness.'
1:803
For weighing my other deeds done in righteousness against my sin, as though on a balance, he will find them far outweighing the sin that befell me.
1:804
the practical purity of hands signifies that his practical deeds, having remained unstained, are accomplished out of a most excellent disposition. 'That all his judgments,' and so forth—
1:805
Those who have slipped must raise themselves up again through subsequent right actions.
1:806
Even though his judgments are unsearchable and, on account of their incomprehensibility, resemble an abyss, still they are all present before him who is beloved of God. 'With the holy you shall show yourself holy'
1:807
祢理當使我配得祢的恩惠;
Rightly have you deemed me worthy of your beneficence;
1:808
since, being righteous, you know how to be holy with the holy.
1:809
For if I had remained in my sin and suffered complete corruption, I know that you yourself, the great judge, would have brought upon me your judgment corresponding to my sin.
1:810
But since I have kept your ways, for this reason you, who are holy with the holy and blameless with the blameless, will not deal with me according to the perversion that befell me at one time, but according to my life thereafter, and you will grant me recompense in your tribunal according to my righteous way of life. 'For you will save a humble people'
1:811
He refers this to the company of the apostles.
1:812
'And you will humble the eyes of the proud'
1:813
This applies to the Pharisees and scribes.
1:814
'For you will light my lamp, O Lord'
1:815
'O my God, you will illuminate my darkness'
1:816
'You will dispel,' he says, 'the ignorance that is in me.'
1:817
'For in you I shall be delivered from a marauding band, and by my God I shall leap over a wall.'
1:818
'For my enemies,' he says, 'surrounded me, so as to shut me in.'
1:819
By 'marauding band' he means the pleasures, and by 'wall' the devil. 'My God, his way is blameless'
1:820
Here, he says, he censures the thanklessness and the wickedness and the disobedient disposition and the hardness of the ungrateful, thankless, hard-hearted Jews.
1:821
Since they laid hold of our Savior Christ, as one acting contrary to the divine law,
1:822
and indeed they also reviled and slandered his words as blasphemous, saying to one another, 'He blasphemes.'
1:823
'For who can forgive sins?' Thinking these things out of an evil conscience and wicked reasoning against the Lord and God of all, and reckoning what they reckoned—
1:824
'His words are refined by fire'
1:825
And his words concerning this matter are like refined silver, pure of all blame, tested, proven.
1:826
'For who is God besides the Lord? Or who is God besides our God?' For the Word of God alone is true God, wherefore he is also Only-Begotten, because he alone is God even as the Father is.
1:827
Having spoken of Christ as being God by nature, he now says, 'Or who is God?'—meaning that the Father alone is God in the same manner as he is.
1:828
'Yet for us there is one God, the Father;'
1:829
for there is no other God, such that one god would grant this petitioner's request, and another that petitioner's.
1:830
或許他也是將這兩節經文並列而發出的;
But perhaps he also set forth the two verses in parallel;
1:831
'Thus,' he says, 'the true God, as I had trusted, girded me with power for victory, and set for me an unharmed path in the things to be done.' 'The God who girds me with power'
1:832
'Until you are clothed with power from on high'
1:833
'And he made my way blameless'
1:834
That is, through the ordinances of the Gospel he prepared me to run a blameless course.
1:835
'And setting me upon the high places'
1:836
'Making my feet steadfast'
1:837
因為聖徒是能滅盡那有毒之情慾的;
For the saints are destroyers of venomous passions;
1:838
因為他們領受了能力,能勝過那些屬靈意義上的毒蛇,因此他們被比作鹿;
for they received power against the intelligible serpents, and for this reason they are likened to deer;
1:839
因為鹿本身也是能消滅那實際可見之毒蛇的;
for these too are destroyers of the sensible serpents;
1:840
'For by stretching them out in prayer, I prevail over my adversaries.'
1:841
And you made my arms a bronze bow.
1:842
Having made the powers of the soul manly, after the manner of a bronze bow.
1:843
Teaching that he will be successful in battle, and setting his arms as a bow, making them, as it were, bronze in strength.
1:844
Or he means: he made the powers of the soul manly, after the manner of a bronze bow.
1:845
Bronze is a symbol of the practical life.
1:846
'You have shielded me,' he says, 'through your salvation.'
1:847
And this is the coming of the dispensation. [And your discipline set me upright.
1:848
這裡所說的管教,是指福音的管教;
He means the discipline that belongs to the gospel;
1:849
或指出於律法的訓練;
or he means the training that comes from the law;
1:850
As if to say: 'While benefiting me in all things, you also gave laws, through which I was trained in what was needful.'
1:851
For learning from it that one ought not to do wrong, I abstained from doing so.
1:852
But so that I might not again be harmed by such leniency, you supply sufficient help, granting me room to move; or he calls 'discipline' the instructive teaching, according to the saying:
1:853
or the laborious training, according to the saying:
1:854
'Do not despise the discipline of the Lord.'] And your right hand upheld me.
1:855
And your discipline set me upright completely.
1:856
That is, evidently, the teaching of the gospel.
1:857
And this very discipline of yours will teach me.
1:858
The phrase 'And this very discipline of yours will teach me' belongs to Theodotion, in place of 'Your discipline set me upright completely,' as it stands in the Seventy.
1:859
You have enlarged my steps.
1:860
For you set my feet upon a rock, which is our faith.
1:861
And my footsteps did not falter.

For by removing the stumbling-blocks and snares which the enemies were laying, he made our path secure.
1:863

'Having removed,' he says, 'the stumbling-blocks and snares which the enemies were laying, you made my way free.'
1:865
因為在德行的勞苦之後獲得安息,腳蹤便因此得以堅固;
For by receiving rest after the labors of virtue, the footsteps are made strong;
1:866
for he set our feet upon a rock.] I will pursue my enemies.
1:867
As one equipped by divine grace for the race, he is confident of victory.
1:868
I will crush them, that they may not be able to stand.

And you girded me with strength.

Again he ascribes the whole of the victory to him who gave the strength.
1:872
And you made my enemies turn their backs to me.
1:873
That is, 'you put them to flight.'
1:874
For it is characteristic of those who flee to show their backs.
1:875
Our enemies the demons show their backs when they are no longer able to cast passionate thoughts into the soul.
1:876
And you utterly destroyed those who hated me.
1:877
Saul, Ahithophel, Absalom, and countless others.
1:878
They cried out, and there was no one to save.
1:879
He says this concerning the perceptible enemies, speaking as it were in the person of the Lord.
1:880
For neither did the foreigners, calling upon their own gods for help, enjoy their providence, nor did Saul, Absalom, Shimei, and the rest of the Israelite enemies have God as their ally.

1:884
This is still spoken with the Lord turning his face away because of the disobedience of the Jews, while asking for the nations as his inheritance.
1:885
You will establish me as head of the nations.
1:886
Therefore the prophecy is fulfilled through him who was born of him according to the flesh.
1:887
He who as God has always ruled over all things, but after the incarnation also received the willing servitude of those who had believed in him.
1:888

A people whom I did not know has served me.
1:889
因祂轉離不信的猶太人,便求萬邦作祂的產業。〕這並非表示無知,因為祂身為神,無所不知;
For turning away from the disobedient Jews, he asks for the nations as his inheritance.] This does not signify ignorance, for as God he knows all things;
1:890
but that those who at various times did not obtain kinship with me would be foreign and strangers, and far removed from what is properly mine.

Everything that grows old is near to vanishing away.
1:895
The Lord lives, and blessed be my God.
1:896
Fittingly he exclaims, 'The Lord lives.'
1:897

Since you have accomplished such and such things, says the prophet, I will confess you through them, when you yourself, O Lord, call the nations, while they sing the hymns which I have composed.

1:913
the salvation which he wrought in the midst of the earth.
1:914

Since he also accomplished this, he says, by showing mercy upon his anointed people;

For his invisible things are perceived from the creation of the world, being understood through the things that are made—both his eternal power and divinity.
1:920
Day unto day utters speech, and night...
1:921
Day, he says, and night, orderly and harmoniously yielding their courses to one another, proclaim their Maker through the very facts themselves.
1:922
There are no speeches nor words.
1:923
The reading is to be taken with a pause [a comma] here.
1:924
但若讀成連續的否定(不加停頓),意思便被截斷了;
But if it is read as a continuous negation, the sense is cut short;
1:925
難道沒有一些事物,雖不發出聲音,卻能宣告那位工匠嗎?的確有;因為從一艘造得精良的船,就能看出造船匠的技藝;
Are there not, then, certain things which, though uttering no voice, proclaim their craftsman? Indeed there are: for from a well-fitted ship the skill of the shipwright is evident;
1:926
and likewise in the case of other things as well.
1:927
Do not, then, the aforementioned works likewise proclaim their Maker by their greatness, beauty, and harmony,
1:928
so that their proclamation runs throughout their whole inhabited world.

1:930
But where did he set it, if not in the heaven and firmament already mentioned? This dwelling he also called a bridal chamber.
1:931
Just as day and night proclaim the Maker by their orderly concord, so too the sun, by running its course with a certain harmony, makes known the power of him who commands it.

As those from the nations, already instructed by the aforementioned elements that the Maker is one, are then taught also the evangelical law, so that the souls of all the nations may be converted to the truth.
1:934

which the Only-begotten testified concerning himself, saying:
1:936
「我到世上來作光」;
'I have come as light into the world;'
1:937
又說:「我從父而出,來到世上」;
and, 'I came forth from the Father, and I have come.'
1:938
〔「使愚人有智慧」,即堅固使徒;或者「愚人」是指那些在基督裡成為嬰孩、被稱為愚拙的人,以及未受智慧陶冶的人。〕耶和華的訓詞正直,能快活人的心;
[‘Making the simple wise’—confirming the apostles; or by ‘the simple’ he means those who became infants and fools in Christ, and men untrained in wisdom.] The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.
1:939
That is, the justification that took place in our case.
1:940

He means the eyes of the understanding, which sends forth its beam from afar.
1:943
耶和華的敬畏是潔淨的,存到永永遠遠;
The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever and ever.
1:944
這是為了與律法所生的懼怕作對比而說的;
This is said in contradistinction to the fear that comes from the Law;
1:945
我們的潔淨在於遠離罪惡;
Our purity consists in abstaining from sins;
1:946
for, he says, by the fear of the Lord one turns away from evil.
1:947
And since this fear is eternal, in whomever it exists, it also makes them eternal.
1:948
In keeping them there is great reward.
1:949
For the reward of keeping them is what eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has entered into the heart of man.
1:950
〔因為你的僕人謹守這些;
[For your servant keeps them;
1:951
The new people, initiated into the evangelical law, having declared that they keep the true judgments, offer up a prayer, both that the reasoning of their mind be found pure, and likewise that they be delivered from the demons without.] Unto the end.
1:952
It is also referred to the person of the apostles, as spoken on the day of the cross.
1:953
願耶和華在患難的日子應允你;
May the Lord hearken to you in the day of affliction;
1:954
願他從聖所差遣幫助給你,從錫安扶持你;
may he send you help from the sanctuary, and sustain you from Zion;
1:955
These words would be spoken for the consolation of the despondent, either by the Word dwelling within the soul, or by the Holy Spirit.
1:956
受患難的人需要禱告,也需要不放棄自己的盼望;
The one who is afflicted has need of prayer, and of not casting down his hopes;

我們要因你的救恩歡騰;
We will exult in your salvation.

子乃是父在世上的救恩;
The Son is the Father's salvation in the world;

the cross is the Son's salvation in the world.
1:961
〔我們要因你的救恩歡騰;
[We will exult in your salvation;
1:962
他說,你所賜給人類的救恩,藉著你的復活,已向眾人顯明了。〕願耶和華成就你一切所求的;
The salvation, he says, which you have given to the human race, you have made manifest to all through your resurrection.] May the Lord fulfill all your petitions;
1:963
這些所求的是什麼呢?豈不是「聖父啊,求你保守他們脫離這世界」;
What were the petitions, if not, 'Holy Father, keep them from the world';
1:964
就是關乎祭司與君王的事,或是因主按肉身而有的經綸與復活;
concerning priests and kings, or on account of the Lord's economy and resurrection according to the flesh;
1:965
or also because, as we are being saved, he himself says that he is saved—since, being of one body, he will indeed have care for it.
1:966
For at present we know Christ to be saved, in that from now on we receive the pledge of salvation.
1:967
你曾藉著你右手的大能施行拯救;
You have saved by the might of your right hand;
1:968
or he foretells beforehand the divine signs of Christ.] 'Now I know that the Lord has saved his Christ'—as one already enlightened by the Spirit concerning the things of the resurrection.
1:969
藉著他右手救恩的大能;
with the mighty acts of the salvation of his right hand.
1:970
For here he signifies the deeds, in that he extends the powers of his right hand to those who draw near.
1:971
〔他說,那些人倚靠這些,就跌倒了;
[Those, he says, trusting in these, have fallen;
1:972
這些人靠車,那些人靠馬;
these trust in chariots, and those in horses;
1:973
Just as, in saving Israel from the sensible Egyptians, he cast Pharaoh's chariots and his host into the sea, so too, in saving the race of all men from the intelligible Egyptians, he shattered their chariots.
1:974
And this psalm too the aforementioned companions of the king offer up, as he now rejoices because of the salvation, born of his seed, given to the world.
1:975
For this was what he desired in his soul, and prayed to receive.
1:976
這事一旦賜下,就成了他的冠冕,如同一頂由寶石所製、榮耀他頭的冠冕;
Which, once given, became for him like a crown of precious stone, glorifying his head;
1:977
And this salvation became for him not only a crown, but also life, and length of days, and glory, and majesty, and gladness, and joy, and hope, and mercy unshaken.
1:978
耶和華啊,王必因你的能力歡喜;
O Lord, the king shall rejoice in your strength;
1:979
for you would grant him blessing forever and ever.
1:980
In all generations, he says, he shall be celebrated in song and much spoken of, having received from you such great boldness.
1:981
For 'with your countenance,' Symmachus rendered 'in the presence of your countenance.'
1:982
He says that now he will have gladness, and continual delight of countenance, that is, by obtaining your favor.
1:983
The cause of these things for him was his having put his trust in you.
1:984
'You will make him glad with joy in your presence.'
1:985
The Son is the countenance of the Father.
1:986
'He who has seen me,' he says, 'has seen the Father.'
1:987
With him we are about to rejoice in heaven, as groomsmen with the bridegroom.
1:988
'For the king hopes in the Lord, and by the mercy...'
1:989
He is superior to those warring against him, because he enjoys your grace.
1:990
He enjoys this grace, trusting in no man, but relying solely on hope in you.
1:991
'Let your hand be found by all your enemies.'
1:992
The word is addressed to the Lord himself, on account of what was done against him by the Jewish people.
1:993
[And he says that he will hunt down those who have sinned,
1:994
因為若對神的愛是在遵守誡命的人身上得以成全,那麼顯然,不遵守的人便是心懷恨惡;
for if the love of God is perfected in the one who keeps the commandments, it is clear that the one who does not keep them hates;
1:995
and such a one is also said to have perished.] For you will make them like a fiery furnace at the time of your presence.
1:996
That is to say, instead: 'You will show them to be sharers in fire.'
1:997
For this is what they have stored up for themselves against your second appearing, when you will render to each according to his works.
1:998
'The Lord in his wrath will trouble them, and fire will devour them.'
1:999
By 'wrath' he means the punishment that will come upon them because of their insolence toward him.
1:1000
'You will destroy their fruit from the earth.'
1:1001
That is, the evil words and the evil devices.
1:1002
These are the plots devised by them, which have also been abolished through the resurrection.
1:1003
[That is, the teachings and godless doctrines which, after their death, God, being good, hands over to destruction.] 'And their seed from among the sons of men.'
1:1004
It is a benefit to fall away from sins and from evil thoughts.
1:1005
For an evil thought is the seed of sin.
1:1006
Symmachus interpreted it thus:
1:1007
'For you will make them turn back,' that is, behind and a mere appendage of the nations.
1:1008
'Among your remnants you will prepare their face.'
1:1009
You have left for them, he says, a time of turning back, for repentance.
1:1010
And this is the calling and the turning that comes after the fullness of the nations.
1:1011
[You will make the unbelieving Jews
1:1012
Those from whom God turns away, he makes into a back, unable to be a face, so that, by contemplating the things behind through the works of creation, they might again be brought back to him.
1:1013
因為那些因心不潔淨而不能得見祂面容的人,便被安排去觀看祂的背後,就是在祂之後所造的受造之物;
For those who, because they do not have a pure heart, are not able to see the face, are appointed to contemplate his back parts, that is, the works of creation which came into being after him;
1:1014
so that, by beholding creation, they might gain some conception of him, and, drawing near to their God, might see the face of God.
1:1015
And the 'remnants' of God are the things that are above sensible/perceptible creatures.
1:1016
'Be exalted, O Lord, in your power.'
1:1017
He clearly prays that the second coming take place for this very reason:
1:1018
'We will sing and make melody of your mighty works.'
1:1019
The psalm now before us is sung concerning 'the help of the morning.'
1:1020
That is, that he freed us from night and from diabolical darkness, when the Only-begotten Word of God shone forth as 'the dayspring from on high,' according to what is written.
1:1021
Or, he also names the time of the Savior's resurrection 'the help of the morning.'
1:1022
For he rose while it was still deep dawn, having opened up for human nature the way unto incorruption.
1:1023
Christ sings this psalm in the person of humanity.
1:1024
And he clearly recounts to us also what befell him at the hands of the Jews at the time of the cross: 'O God, my God, attend to me;'
1:1025
'why have you forsaken me?' He asks for the watchful care that comes from the Father, transferring our condition onto himself, so that [Ambr.: for we were the ones formerly forsaken, but now we have been taken up and saved,
1:1026
He says these things — and so forth] — in order that he might put an end to the curse, and turn the Father's face toward us.
1:1027
For it is we who became the ones turned away from and forsaken, because of the transgression in Adam.
1:1028
'Far from my salvation are the words of my transgressions.'
1:1029
Observe again the person of humanity in Christ, entreating to be delivered from faults, that is, from transgressions and the words concerning them.
1:1030
The Savior says these things in the person of humanity, in place of saying:
1:1031
Θεέ μου, Θεέ μου.]
'My God, my God.'] 'My God, I will cry by day, and you will not hear, and by night, and it is not folly for me.'
1:1032
It must be read with a light pause.
1:1033
And he signifies to us that the fruit of prayer is not without benefit.
1:1034
That is, I know clearly that I will indeed cry out, and he will hear.
1:1035
For indeed, dwelling among the holy ones who have set their mind on you, you become their praise and glory.
1:1036
'But you dwell in the holy place, O praise of Israel.'
1:1037
He who is praised by Israel:
1:1038
'Our fathers hoped in you; they hoped, and you delivered them.'
