1:2126

"A prayer to the God of my life."
1:2129
As one who has already believed, he brings forth words befitting those who believe, inscribing to him his own proper life.
1:2130
"I will say unto God, You are my helper."
1:2131
The people, now repenting, renew their supplication, calling upon God the more urgently for mercy.
1:2132
"Judge me, O God, and plead my cause."
1:2133
The present psalm has the same subject matter as the one before it.
1:2134
For once again those of Israel come forward, asking for the salvation that is through Christ.
1:2135
"Send out your light and your truth."
1:2136
因為他將要領他們進入聖山,就是進入天上、那上頭的居所,也就是他所稱的「帳幕」;
For he was about to lead them into the holy mountain, that is, into heaven and into the mansions above, which he also calls "tabernacles";
1:2137
以及進入那屬靈的(理知性的)祭壇;
and into the spiritual altar;
1:2138
and he himself was about to gladden their youth.
1:2139
And he calls "youth" the gladness that also renews their soul.
1:2140
And we have often taught that "harp" is to be understood as the body.
1:2141
"To the end, for the sons of Korah, for understanding."
1:2142
〔這篇詩篇仍然承接著同一個主題;
[And this psalm too holds to the same subject matter;
1:2143
of those recounting the ancient benefits, and asking to be received back, by inscribing their hope upon him, and confessing in his name.
1:2144
"Our soul is brought down to the dust."
1:2145
Thus they say, since, having thrust away the mind of Christ, they fell into a fleshly mindset.] "O God, we have heard with our ears."
1:2146
"But now you have cast us off and put us to shame."
1:2147
"And you will not go forth, O God, with our armies."
1:2148
"Formerly," he says, "you commanded our armies together with us;"
1:2149
"but now not only do you not go forth with us, but you have also turned us back, so that we have even become plunder to those who hate us."
1:2150
And the prophetic chorus says these things, appropriating to itself the calamities of the people.
1:2151
"And those who hate us plundered for themselves."
1:2152
"With shouts of triumph," he says, "[you have given] us over to dishonor."
1:2153
"And there was no great price in our exchanges [shouts of triumph]."
1:2154
"Shout of triumph" is a song of victory.
1:2155
"Thus," he says, "you have cast us off, so that we were even defeated by a few, and those who shouted in triumph over us were but some small number."
1:2156
"You have made us a reproach to our neighbors."
1:2157
All that they did has been rendered back upon them with respect to Christ:
1:2158
他們曾譏誚人,如今自己也遭譏誚;
they reproached, and they were reproached;
1:2159
他們曾戲弄人,如今也遭到反戲弄;
they mocked, and they were mocked in return;
1:2160
they shook their heads at him, and others also shook their heads at them.
1:2161
"All the day long my confusion is before me."
1:2162
"Long," he says, "and continual has been the shame that has come upon us."
1:2163
"All these things have come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you."
1:2164
We have already said that it is the prophets who offer up the supplication in the person of the people, appropriating to themselves the evils that befell because of their sins.
1:2165
"And you have turned our paths aside from your way."
1:2166
They say these things because, having acted impiously toward Christ, they were also thrust out from performing the sacrifice according to the law.
1:2167
"For you have humbled us in the place of affliction."
1:2168
他這樣說,是因為他們再也無法存有任何高傲自恃的心思;
He says this because they were no longer able to think anything of the things that are exalted;
1:2169
"And you have reproved us as having sinned in the world."
1:2170
"And the shadow of death has covered us."
1:2171
He signifies the darkness that came to be in the hearts of those who disbelieved.
1:2172
"If we have forgotten the name of our God"
1:2173
They say this as those who no longer practiced idolatry after the final fall, or again as speaking in the person of the prophets.
1:2174
"For your sake we are put to death all the day long."
1:2175
"They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they died by the slaughter of the sword."
1:2176
"Awake, why do you sleep, O Lord?" They liken to sleep the great forbearance which God showed on account of their sins.
1:2177
"Arise, and do not cast us off forever."
1:2178
他說「求你興起」,並非指他要改變自己的形態;
"Arise," he says, not that he should change his form;
1:2179
for the divine is without form, but that he should stir up his own power to our help.
1:2180
"And do not cast us off forever," neither those who do wrong nor those who suffer it, so that neither the sufferers, as though wholly given over to trials, should slip, nor the doers, emboldened by the judge's patience, should advance further into iniquity.
1:2181
"Our belly cleaves to the dust."
1:2182
They say this because, having rejected the mind of Christ, they fell into a carnal mind.
1:2183
"Arise, O Lord, help us."
1:2184
"Lay hold of us," he says, and grant favor and a time of turning back to those who confess true faith in you.
1:2185
To the end, for those who shall be changed, for the sons of Korah, for understanding, a song for the Beloved.
1:2186
He also mentions the sons of Korah, referring the person to the apostles.
1:2187
而這一切都是我們必須明白的;
But it is necessary for us to understand all these things;
1:2188
wherefore it is also entitled "for understanding."
1:2189
"My heart has poured forth a good word."
1:2190
This the Father says concerning the Son:
1:2191
for God has come to be from God.
1:2192
"I speak my works to the king."
1:2193
正如祂原本作為神原是君王,卻因祂成了肉身,被稱為來到王權的開始;
Just as, being king as God, he is said to come to the beginning of a kingdom because he was made flesh;
1:2194
so also, the things which he knows naturally as God, these again he is said, by way of economy, to hear on account of his humanity.
1:2195
"My tongue is the pen of a swift scribe."
1:2196
The word which he has spoken of, this he also calls his tongue.
1:2197
It is called the pen of a swift scribe, because whatever he speaks immediately comes to pass, as in:
1:2198
and, "Young man, I say to you, arise";
1:2199
"The Lord will make a concise word in all the inhabited earth."
1:2200
"Fair in beauty beyond the sons of men."
1:2201
One can see the comparison of the good Spirit from what John says, that "the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."
1:2202
因為摩西的筆也是美好的;
For the pen of Moses too was good;
1:2203
因為他為我們寫下了作為訓蒙師傅的律法;
for he wrote for us a law that served as a tutor;
1:2204
but it was not such as also to write our names in the heavens.
1:2205
"Grace is poured out upon your lips."
1:2206
For our Lord is sweet-voiced, saying:
1:2207
「我來,是要叫他們得生命,並且得的更豐盛」,又說:「我就是從天上降下來的糧」;
"I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly," and, "I am the bread that came down from heaven";
1:2208
and, "giving life to the world."
1:2209
"Gird your sword upon your thigh, O mighty one."
1:2210
He rouses the Only-begotten to the battle on our behalf.
1:2211
Then also, since he has given him a soldier's form, having spoken of the sword, he adds the thigh as well.
1:2212
因為這刀劍是屬於祂自己的,如同屬神一般,並非從外而來的;
For the sword is his own, as God's, and not something from outside;
1:2213
因為祂是大能者,也就是萬軍之主;
for he is mighty, that is, the Lord of hosts;
1:2214
and this belongs to him according to nature.
1:2215
And he is fair to those who have recognized his manifestation, and who are able to perceive his supramundane beauty.
1:2216
He has fitted the sword to the thigh with a view to the threat against the unbelieving and the ranks of the adversaries.
1:2217
Concerning those who disobey, then, the psalm says:
1:2218
"If you do not turn back, he will sharpen his sword."
1:2219
"In your comeliness and in your beauty."
1:2220
Now the comeliness and beauty of him who has gone to war are his divinity and his supremacy over all things.
1:2221
"And bend your bow, and prosper, and reign."
1:2222
having justified by yourself those over whom you reign, he says, having delivered them from the tyrant.
1:2223
for having mentioned weapons, he mentions gentleness as well.
1:2224
Now it belongs to the gentle to forgo, on his own behalf, the things done to those who are wronged.
1:2225
"And your right hand shall guide you wondrously."
1:2226
For since he mentioned the sword, he consequently also made mention of the right hand.
1:2227
"Your arrows are sharpened, O mighty one."
1:2228
By arrows he means the holy apostles, who dealt mortal blows to the heart of the enemies of the King of those who reign.
1:2229
These arrows, having struck the intelligible enemies to the heart, had power to bring all that is under heaven beneath the feet of Christ, and to subject it to the yoke of his kingdom.
1:2230
The verses are in inverted order, so that they should read thus:
1:2231
"Your arrows are sharpened, O mighty one, in the hearts of the king's enemies."
1:2232
"Your throne, O God, is forever and ever."
1:2233
Those who have been called through the apostles, confessing the divinity of the Only-begotten, say:
1:2234
"Your throne, O God, is forever and ever."
1:2235
"A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom."
1:2236
Uprightness, in the divine Scripture, signifies righteousness.
1:2237
He says, then, that those who are ruled by Christ may learn to walk the way of righteousness.
1:2238
"You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity."
1:2239
既然人的本性因遭逢墮落,離棄了公義而喜愛罪惡,正因此,獨生子便成了人,在自己裡面為人的本性導正了「愛公義、恨罪惡」這件事;
Since human nature, having suffered a turning, forsook righteousness and loved iniquity, for this reason the Only-begotten became man, setting right in himself, on behalf of human nature, the loving of righteousness and the hating of iniquity;
1:2240
and this is the cause of the incarnation.
1:2241
inasmuch as they have been shown mercy, because through you they succeeded in loving righteousness and hating lawlessness.
1:2242
'Therefore God, your God, has anointed you,' he says:
1:2243
For 'he anointed' (echrisen) is interpreted as 'he anointed' (ēleipsen).
1:2244
This interpretation is linked back to what was said above, 'You have loved righteousness.'
1:2245
'Myrrh and stacte and cassia breathe from your garments.'
1:2246
The garments of the Only-begotten may be understood as his powers, majesty, and glory, according to the verse:
1:2247
'The Lord has reigned, he has clothed himself with majesty; the Lord has clothed himself with strength, and girded himself.'
1:2248
This, then, is his glory and majesty, which has become fragrant to us, arranged as it were like every rank of incense, according to what is said elsewhere:
1:2249
「你的名如同倒出來的香膏」;
'Your name is ointment poured out';
1:2250
and, 'We will run after the fragrance of your perfumes.'
1:2251
香膏(stacte)是沒藥中極精細的一種;
Stacte is a very fine kind of myrrh;
1:2252
因為當這香料被榨壓時,凡從中自然流出的部分,便分離出來成為「滴流香膏」;
for when the spice is pressed out, whatever of it flows freely is set apart as stacte,
1:2253
while the thicker part that remains is called myrrh.
1:2254
Cassia is a very thin and fragrant bark, wrapped around woody twigs.
1:2255
'from ivory palaces, by which they have made you glad.'
1:2256
'Palaces' means costly and splendid houses, that is, temples.
1:2257
And by 'ivory' he means, as it were, polished and most beautiful.
1:2258
And he names 'kings' the holy apostles, who also reign together with Christ.
1:2259
And their 'daughters' are the souls who through them have been regenerated unto the knowledge of God, who also make their own hearts into most beautiful temples, delighting him unto the honor of God.
1:2260
'The queen stood at your right hand, in garments interwoven with gold.'
1:2261
「王后」就是教會,她已成為那偉大君王的新婦;
'The queen' is the Church, having become the bride of the great King;
1:2262
而站在祂右邊,象徵她在來世將要享有的尊榮;
and standing at his right hand signifies the honor which she will enjoy in the age to come;
1:2263
她那繽紛的衣服,就是信、望、愛;
and her varied garment is faith, hope, and love;
1:2264
and she has also another, more radiant garment—Christ himself.
1:2265
'For as many of you as were baptized into Christ,' he says, 'have put on Christ.'
1:2266
'Hear, O daughter, and see.'
1:2267
And again this word is addressed to the Church.
1:2268
'and forget your own people, and your father's house.'
1:2269
The 'people' of the Church long ago were the idolaters,
1:2270
and 'her father's house' means the wise ones of this age, in whom Satan dwells as in houses.
1:2271
'And the daughter of Tyre shall come with gifts.'
1:2272
By one nation—that of the Tyrians, I mean—he signifies the calling of the Gentiles.
1:2273
He named the Tyrians because they were, above all, enemies of the pious way of life.
1:2274
'The rich among the people shall entreat your favor.'
1:2275
He says this, proclaiming good news even to the kings themselves, and to those who are in positions of eminence:
1:2276
'Worship the Church'—that is, her own Lord.
1:2277
'All the glory of the king's daughter is within, in tassels of gold.'
1:2278
「在裡面」指的是敬虔;
'Within' signifies piety;
1:2279
因為教會的裝飾是屬靈可悟的;
for the adornment of the Church is spiritual;
1:2280
and the 'tassels' signify the manifold virtues.
1:2281
'Virgins shall be brought to the king after her.'
1:2282
Similar to: 'We shall be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.'
1:2283
And again, by 'the virgin' he signifies the Church:
1:2284
'For I betrothed you to present you as a pure virgin to God.'
1:2285
'Her companions shall be brought to you.'
1:2286
因為節制與童貞相鄰;
For continence is neighbor to virginity;
1:2287
therefore, as many souls as practice continence—clearly abstaining from wicked deeds—they too will be led along together with her.
1:2288
And it happens that those who are led find eternal gladness and rejoicing.
1:2289
'They shall be led into the temple of the king.'
1:2290
'Instead of your fathers, your sons were born.'
1:2291
Since he said to her, 'Forget your father,' he now says, 'instead of your fathers of old'—that is, instead of your teachers—'there shall be sons to you.'
1:2292
And he calls the holy apostles 'sons,' according to what was said by the Lord:
1:2293
'Your sons—by whom do they cast out demons?' Or else he means those who lead the Churches, who have indeed become sons of the Church, yet have been appointed rulers over all the earth by the Lord Jesus, according to what was said:
1:2294
'Go, make disciples of all nations.'
1:2295
「你要立他們在全地作首領」;
'You will make them rulers over all the earth;'
1:2296
'they shall remember your name in every generation.'
1:2297
In the sacred writings the name of God is commemorated,
1:2298
and the word is addressed to Christ.
1:2299
'To the end, for the sons of Korah, concerning hidden things.'
1:2300
The present psalm signifies the calling of the Gentiles, the casting out of the intelligible enemies, and their confinement in the abyss.
1:2301
And since these things are spoken, as it were, through parables, the psalm is fittingly entitled 'concerning hidden things.'
1:2302
Those who believed in Christ sing it, and before all others, his apostles.
1:2303
'God is our refuge and strength.'
1:2304
He says these things because of the persecutions that rose up against them from both intelligible and sensible enemies.
1:2305
For the whole earth was thrown into turmoil when the preaching began, as those who remained in unbelief rose up against those who believed the preaching.
1:2306
'and mountains be removed into the heart of the seas.'
1:2307
「海的心」是指那深淵;
By 'the hearts of the seas' he means the abysses;
1:2308
and by 'mountains,' the opposing powers.
1:2309
Since the demons were about to be cast out into the abyss, they stirred up war against them.
1:2310
'But we shall not fear such things,' they say.
1:2311
Or by 'mountains' he means the demons, who were once lofty and conspicuous, and for this reason are likened to mountains.] 'Their waters roared and were troubled.'
1:2312
Here by 'waters' he means the multitudes, which the strangeness of the preaching also threw into confusion.
1:2313
'The mountains were troubled at his might.'
1:2314
the demons, who were once lofty and conspicuous, and for this reason likened to mountains
1:2315
'The streams of the river make glad the city of God.'
1:2316
By 'river' he means the word of the Gospel, which also gladdens the Church.
1:2317
'The Most High has sanctified his tabernacle.'
1:2318
因為祂是聖潔的,安息在聖徒之中,居住在聖徒之中;
For he is holy, resting among the holy, dwelling among the holy;
1:2319
'God is in the midst of her, and she shall not be moved' — clearly meaning the Church.
1:2320
'God shall help her at the break of dawn.'
1:2321
That is, his inclining toward her early, about the break of dawn.
1:2322
For as to 'God shall help her,' here too the person of the Church would be understood as the holy apostles and those who in succession have led her, whom he also vigorously strengthens with sinews so that they are able to lay hold of the preaching.
1:2323
'The nations were troubled, the kingdoms were bowed down.'
1:2324
他說,列邦曾攻打教會;
The nations, he says, made war against the Church;
1:2325
但他們的君王仍然屈服了,也就是說,他們已被擊敗、已經逃遁;
but nevertheless their kings were bowed down, that is, they have been defeated and have fled;
1:2326
but afterward they too bent the neck to Christ.
1:2327
For he says that you shall quickly be built up by those by whom you were thrown down.
1:2328
For they exalted the Church, offering most excellent gifts.
1:2329
'The Most High gave forth his voice, and the earth was shaken.'
1:2330
By 'his voice' he means the word of the Gospel.
1:2331
For if a rational soul hears the voice of the Lord, it is shaken, passing over from vice to virtue, and from ignorance to the knowledge of God.
1:2332
'The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our helper.'
1:2333
He ascribes to the Lord himself the victory gained over the intelligible enemies.
1:2334
And the mention of Jacob is fitting, on account of the wrestling that took place with him.
1:2335
He signifies the peace that came about through the preaching, by saying that all war has ceased from the earth.
1:2336
「奇事」指的是消滅,或者說是廢除;
By 'wonders' he means the destructions, or rather the abolitions;
1:2337
for he abolished all war.
1:2338
'He shall break the bow, and crush the spear, and burn the shields with fire.'
1:2339
Here 'bow,' 'spear,' and 'shield' signify the very worst condition, and evil reasonings.
1:2340
'Be still, and know that I am God.'
1:2341
For unless one becomes free of every worldly care, he cannot come to know God.
1:2342
For leisure from worldly cares is needed in order to know God.
1:2343
'I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.'
1:2344
He promises to them the prevailing of the preaching over the nations.
1:2345
'The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our helper.'
1:2346
Those who have believed in Christ redouble their thanksgiving.
1:2347
'To the end, for the sons of Korah.'
1:2348
The psalm is sung in the person of the holy apostles, who exhort the nations to leap for joy through good deeds at the victory that has come about over the accursed demons.
1:2349
'O clap your hands, all you nations.'
1:2350
That is, instead: 'Pursue good deeds.'
1:2351
'Shout unto God with a voice of exultation.'
1:2352
The psalm is a song of victory.
1:2353
Since, then, the opposing powers have fallen, he exhorts the nations to sing.
1:2354
'For the Lord Most High is terrible.'
1:2355
He is 'Most High' by having become so for the sake of the Church, but 'terrible' toward his enemies.
1:2356
'A great King over all the earth.'
1:2357
No longer, he says, do the wicked rule over those on the earth.
1:2358
'He subdued peoples under us, and nations under our feet.'
1:2359
They rejoice over the inheritances given to them by the Lord.
1:2360
'He chose out an inheritance for us, for himself.'
1:2361
And what would the inheritance of the Lord be, but that concerning which it was said by the Father: 'Ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance'? 'The beauty of Jacob, which he loved.'
1:2362
By 'the beauty of Jacob' he means the prophecy concerning the nations, about which he said:
1:2363
'And he himself shall be the expectation of the nations.'
1:2364
And this is also beloved.
1:2365
And beloved by whom, if not by him who laid down his soul for it? This beloved inheritance, then, he says, he chose.
1:2366
By these things the Lord is signified.
1:2367
He called the praises of those who ascend with him 'the sound of a trumpet.'
1:2368
'Sing praises to our God, sing praises;'
1:2369
'sing praises to our King, sing praises.'
1:2370
他說,既然眾天使歌頌那升上之主,那麼,列邦啊,你們也當保守同樣的敬事之禮,向那作全地君王的神歌頌;
Since, he says, the angels hymn him who ascends, you also, O nations, preserving the same service, sing praises to the God who has become King of the earth;
1:2371
for to sing psalms belongs to those who rejoice in a godly manner.
1:2372
'Is anyone among you cheerful?' he says. 'Let him sing psalms.'
1:2373
不是用琴瑟,像從前的人那樣;
Not with harps, as those of old did;
1:2374
for this is the meaning of 'with understanding.'] 'God has reigned over the nations.'
1:2375
For they received faith in him.
1:2376
'God sits upon his holy throne.'
1:2377
He signifies his coming arrival, by which he will sit to judge the world.
1:2378
'The rulers of the peoples are gathered together with the God of Abraham.'
1:2379
Similar to: 'You shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.'
1:2380
'For the mighty ones of the earth are God's; they were greatly exalted.'
1:2381
In the land of the meek, he says, which is to be given to the saints, the mighty ones of God have been exalted and glorified exceedingly, as we have been taught from the word that declares:
1:2382
'You shall sit upon twelve thrones.'
1:2383
A PSALM. A Song for the sons of Korah. For the second day of the week.
1:2384
This psalm too is sung in the person of the holy apostles, recounting the persecutions that came upon them for the sake of the preaching, and the victories that were won in the midst of these.
1:2385
'Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.'
1:2386
No longer, he says, upon Judea alone, but also upon the mountain that has been sanctified.
1:2387
By 'mountain' here he means the Church, because of the loftiness of the doctrines concerning God.
1:2388
'Firmly founded, the joy of all the earth.'
1:2389
他說,他將這喜樂擴展到全地;
He extended, he says, this joy over all the earth;
1:2390
for over all the earth he spread wide the joy of his theophany and his grace.
1:2391
'Mount Zion, on the sides of the north.'
1:2392
Jerusalem lies to the south, while the nations lie to the north.
1:2393
But since the Jews thought highly of themselves as being the only ones who dwelt in Zion, the text shows that Zion is the nations who have received the word of the gospel.
1:2394
因為錫安的根基,就是北方那地域;而『邊界』一詞所指明的,正是北方的這個地域;
For the foundation of Zion is the region of the north, and it is this region of the north that is signified by 'the sides';
1:2395
for instead of saying 'the region of the north,' he has said 'the sides.'
1:2396
從前,保羅曾是北方的一邊,地上一切的邪惡都是從他身上燃起的;
Formerly Paul was a side of the north, from which all evils upon the earth were kindled;
1:2397
but now he has become one of the mountains of Zion, having within himself Christ who speaks, who came forth out of Zion and turned away ungodliness from Jacob.
1:2398
'The city of the great King.'
1:2399
These sides of the north, he says, that is, the nations, might well be called 'the city,' in whom God is known as one who helps and saves them out of their trials.
1:2400
'God is known in her strongholds' — that is, when he helps her.
1:2401
The 'strongholds' would be the great and eminent men of the city of God, those who excel within her.
1:2402
'For behold, the kings of the earth assembled.'
1:2403
The war waged against the apostles because of their preaching, by the visible kings of the nations, and indeed also by the invisible demons who formerly held dominion, was dissolved and brought to nothing.
1:2404
'They themselves, seeing it, marveled thus.'
1:2405
They were struck with amazement, he says, and stood beside themselves, beholding the help that came from God to the saints.
1:2406
'They were troubled, they were shaken, trembling took hold of them.'
1:2407
For the surpassing might of him who saves wrought in them wonder and consternation.
1:2408
'With a violent wind you shall break the ships of Tarshish.'
1:2409
By 'ships of Tarshish,' as it were costly and heavily-laden vessels, he likens the kings.
1:2410
By the 'violent wind,' by which he shattered them, you are to understand certain powers through which he warred down the enemies of the apostles. 'As we have heard, so have we seen.'
1:2411
'In the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God.'
1:2412
This signifies where they saw the promise fulfilled.
1:2413
'He has founded it forever.'
1:2414
This is like what was said by the Lord: 'I will build my Church upon the rock.'
1:2415
'We have received your mercy, O God, in the midst of your temple.'
1:2416
Instead of 'we have beheld,' he means 'we have anticipated,' he says, that the name of God would be glorified throughout all the earth; for from his mercy we inferred that men outside of Israel would not be disregarded, but even though established in a fixed place and temple, we hoped for a mercy embracing the whole world, knowing that your name is universal and is over all.
1:2417
'As is your name, O God, so also is your praise.'
1:2418
He says this because he has given grace to all simply and without partiality, according to what is said:
1:2419
'In Christ Jesus there is neither slave nor free.'
1:2420
'Mount Zion' — clearly, the Church.
1:2421
'And let the daughters of Judea rejoice.'
1:2422
他說,『猶大的眾女子』乃是指聖使徒們的靈魂;
He says that the 'daughters of Judea' are the souls of the holy apostles;
1:2423
'Because of your judgments, O Lord.'
1:2424
Having judged the judgment of the nations, you drove away the war of the demons that was waged against them.
1:2425
'Encircle Zion, and go about her.'
1:2426
These things the Holy Spirit enjoins upon the apostles, that they should become, as it were, a wall for Zion, that is, for the godly commonwealth.
1:2427
And who would the towers of the Church be, but those who at each season are her leaders, and the righteous, to whom also the apostles recount the great deeds of God? [To the divine powers that guard the Church and the godly commonwealth, and to the holy angels, the Holy Spirit addresses itself, saying:
1:2428
for the more important parts of the city, as being more essential for its safekeeping, have been assigned by number to the guards.] 'Set your hearts upon her power.'
1:2429
'And divide among yourselves her strongholds.'
1:2430
Let each one, he says, reign over a portion of the nations.
1:2431
'That you may recount it to another generation.'
1:2432
For the apostles recount it also to the generations after them, through the writings concerning Christ that they have left behind.
1:2433
'For this is our God for ever.'
1:2434
He states the reason for the distribution.
1:2435
For this reason teach and divide, so that it may become known also to the generations yet to come, that this one who has righteously shepherded the people (he means the Lord) is the very one who will also shepherd them unto the ages to come, ages without end.
1:2436
To the end. For the sons of Korah.
1:2437
The 'sons of Korah' might represent the persons of the apostles, who initiated all that is under heaven into the mysteries.
1:2438
'Hear this, all you nations; give ear, all you who dwell in the world.'
1:2439
Just as it calls the whole race of mankind unto salvation, in the same manner the word summons all together unto the teaching of the divine judgment.
1:2440
'Both the earthborn and the sons of men.'
1:2441
『地上生者』是指那些較為粗野的人,即蠻族,包括住在曠野之人,以及不按法度而治理生活的人;
By 'earthborn' he calls the coarser sort of men, the barbarians, both those dwelling in the wilderness and those not governed by lawful order;
1:2442
and by 'sons of men,' those who pursue a more civilized way of life, and are governed by laws.
1:2443
'My mouth shall speak wisdom.'
1:2444
Just as he divided his hearers into a great many ranks, so also he distinguishes his own teaching into various manners.
1:2445
The chorus that utters these words is the apostolic company, who bear Christ upon their mouth, who is the wisdom of the Father.
1:2446
Since, then, they bore Christ upon their mouth, and continually meditated on him in their mind, they possessed understanding.
1:2447
So sharply was their mind honed toward understanding, that they could even comprehend the parables of the Savior recorded in the Gospels.
1:2448
'Have you understood all these things?' They said to him:
1:2449
'I,' he says, 'having sharpened my own mind toward the understanding of the saving parables, have been able to follow the thought conveyed within them;'
1:2450
'but for those who are unable to do this on account of their infancy, I will open what is closed, and make plain the difficulties and the parables.'
1:2451
And I will do these things by means of my own psaltery — that is, my body, sounding like an instrument — through which the soul is turned to hymnody, being skillfully moved through each sense-organ and limb and part.
1:2452
'Why should I fear in the evil day?' From here he begins, having spoken the first elements of his teaching as it were in a preface.
1:2453
He begins by way of a question, so that he might also receive an answer.
1:2454
The question is this:
1:2455
'Why do I fear?' For the punctuation must fall as far as 'I fear,' so that the sense may be this: if someone asks, he says, 'Why do I fear?' — wishing to learn from me the cause of the anguish that grips me — let him hear with frankness that there is an evil day, which I myself, shuddering, fear.
1:2456
I shudder because on that day 'the iniquity of my heel shall surround me' — that is, the deviation from the divine way which I have made in my life, having transgressed the divine law through distraction and deceit.
1:2457
他說,這不虔敬必要圍困我;
This impiety, then, shall surround me, he says;
1:2458
instead of, 'The evil deeds which I have done shall stand around me,' surrounding me on every side and besieging me, and not allowing me to escape punishment.
1:2459
He calls the day of judgment 'evil,' since indeed it is evil for those who are being punished.
1:2460
The Apostle also called it 'the day of wrath,' saying:
1:2461
'You are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath.'
1:2462
'Those who trust in their own power.'
1:2463
From the preceding clause continues: 'Hear this, you who are confident in wealth and in power.'
1:2464
他們該聽的是什麼呢?豈不就是這件事:在那日,連財富也不能使他們得益處嗎?因為沒有任何東西能救贖他們脫離因罪而將臨到他們身上的忿怒;
And what is it that they ought to hear, but this: that on that day not even their wealth will profit them? For nothing will redeem them from the wrath that will be brought upon them because of sin;
1:2465
正如舉例而言,就連一位蒙神喜愛的弟兄,或任何其他人,在那日都沒有能力救贖任何人;
just as, for instance, not even a brother beloved of God, nor any other person, has the power to redeem anyone on that day;
1:2466
and if the brother has no power, and that though beloved of God, much more will wealth have no power.
1:2467
['The brother does not redeem;'
1:2468
he means a brother beloved of God and precious.] 'And the price of the redemption of his soul...'
1:2469
And what is this but to acquire a laborious and toilsome life? For these are the ones who will also be deemed worthy of the promised life in the age to come.
1:2470
He who labors through the practical life will live to the end through knowledge, and will rest forever, and will live unto victory.
1:2471
'And he has labored forever, and he will live unto the end.'
1:2472
'He shall not see corruption, when he sees the wise dying.'
1:2473
For they will be so far removed from the impious that they will not even draw near to their destruction.
1:2474
And who are the 'wise' who die, but those concerning whom it has been said:
1:2475
'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will set aside the understanding of the prudent'? For throughout, the present Scripture teaches that on the day of judgment neither the rich man delivers himself, nor the one reputed to be wise.
1:2476
Only he will obtain eternal life who in the present life has worn himself out in labor for virtue.
