Do your diligence to come to me quickly.
10:2
因為底馬貪愛現今的世界,就離棄我往帖撒羅尼迦去了;革勒士往加拉太去;
For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia.
10:3
Only Luke is with me.
10:4
Take Mark, and bring him with yourself;
10:5
for he is useful to me for ministry.
10:6
But Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.
10:7
The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, bring when you come, and the books, especially the parchments.
10:8
It is worth inquiring how he calls Timothy to himself, seeing that he had been entrusted with a Church and a whole nation.
10:9
這事並非出於自恃狂妄;
The matter was not one of presumption;
10:10
因為保羅自己本是預備好要到他那裡去的;
for he himself was ready to come to him;
10:11
for hear him saying, But if I tarry long, that you may know how you ought to behave yourself in the house of God.
10:12
那麼是為著甚麼緣故呢?他被極大的困境緊緊拘束,再也不能自由外出遠行了;
But for what reason then? He was held fast by great constraint, and was no longer master of travelling abroad;
10:13
he dwelt in a prison, and was shut up by Nero, and was on the very point of dying.
10:14
因此,為叫這事不至在他見到門徒之前臨到,他才召他來,渴望在死前得見他,或許也要將許多事囑咐交託給他;
In order, therefore, that this might not happen before he saw his disciple, for this reason he calls him, longing to behold him before his death, and perhaps to commit many things to his charge;
10:15
Therefore he says, 'Do your utmost to come to me before winter.'
10:16
'For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world.'
10:17
他並不說:「好叫我在離世以前得見你」——雖然這正是最令他傷痛之事;
And he does not say, 'That I may see you before I depart from this life'—which was the thing that grieved him most;
10:18
but rather, 'Since I am alone,' he says, 'and have no one to give me help.'
10:19
'For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed to Thessalonica.'
10:20
That is, being enamored of ease, of a life free from danger and secure, he chose rather to luxuriate at home than to endure hardship with me and to share with me the perils that were then upon us.
10:21
他單單點名責備此人,並非有意毀謗他,乃是要堅固我們,使我們在危難中、在勞苦中不至於軟弱;
He singled this man out for censure, not because he wished to slander him, but in order to strengthen us, that we might not grow soft amid dangers or amid toils;
10:22
for this is the meaning of 'having loved this present world.'
10:23
At the same time he also wished to draw his disciple onward.
10:24
'Crescens,' he says, 'has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.'
10:25
對這些人他不再加以責備;
These men he no longer censures;
10:26
for Titus too was among those greatly to be admired, so much so that Paul entrusted to him the affairs of the island—and no small island, but a very great one, I mean Crete.
10:27
'Luke alone is with me.'
10:28
He clung to Paul most inseparably—the very man who wrote the Gospel and the universal Acts—being diligent, eager to learn, and enduring.
10:29
Concerning this man Paul writes, 'Whose praise is in the Gospel throughout all the churches.'
10:30
'Take Mark and bring him with you.'
10:31
For what reason? 'For he is useful to me for ministry.'
10:32
他所說的並非自己的安息,乃是「福音的服事」;
He does not speak of his own rest, but of 'the ministry of the Gospel';
10:33
for even while he was in chains, he did not cease to preach.
10:34
So then he summoned Timothy also for this reason—not for his own sake, but for the sake of the Gospel—that no disturbance might arise among the faithful at his death, since many of his own disciples would be present to check any tumults and to comfort those who bore his death beyond endurance.
10:35
因為在羅馬信主的人多半是有名望的人;
For it was likely that those who had believed at Rome were men of consequence;
10:36
'But Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.'
10:37
'The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, bring it when you come, and the books, especially the parchments.'
10:38
他在此所說的「外衣」是指那件外袍;
By 'cloak' here he means the outer garment;
10:39
though some say it means the book-case in which the books were kept.
10:40
But what need had he of the books when he was about to depart to God? He had the greatest need, so that he might commit them to the faithful and that they might have them in place of his own teaching.
10:41
Now it was likely that all the faithful were then greatly stricken, but most of all those present at his death and enjoying his company at that time.
10:42
He asks for the cloak, so that he might not need to receive one from another.
10:43
For you see him taking great pains over this, and saying elsewhere, when he was conversing with those from Ephesus:
10:44
'You know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me.'
10:45
and again, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'
10:46
'Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm.'
10:47
'May the Lord repay him according to his works.'
10:48
他在此又提及一場試煉,並非單要毀謗那人,也非要控告他,乃是要膏抹他的門徒去面對爭戰,使他能以高貴的心承擔;
Here again he makes mention of a trial, not wishing simply to slander that man nor to accuse him, but to anoint his disciple for the contests, that he might bear them nobly;
10:49
even if those who bring the trials are of low degree, even if they are of no account, even if they are dishonored, one must, he says, bear all things nobly.
10:50
因為受大人物之害的人,尚有不小的自尊得慰藉——就是那加害者的顯赫地位;
For he who has suffered ill at the hands of some great person has no small consolation to his pride—the eminence of the one who does it;
10:51
but he who suffers at the hands of a mean and abject person has the greater vexation.
10:52
「他多多地害了我」;
'He did me much harm';
10:53
that is, 'He afflicted me in various ways.'
10:54
他說:「然而這些事臨到他,必不至於不受懲罰;
'But not unpunished,' he says, 'shall these things turn out for him;
10:55
for the Lord will repay him according to his works.'
10:56
正如他在上文寫道:「我所忍受的是何等的逼迫!然而主從這一切之中救了我」;
Just as, when writing above, he said, 'What persecutions I endured! Yet out of them all the Lord delivered me';
10:57
在此他也以雙重的方式勉勵他的門徒,一面藉自己的受害,一面藉那人必受報應之事;
so here too he encouraged his disciple in a twofold way, both by his own suffering ill and by the fact that that man would receive his due;
10:58
not as though the saints simply exulted in punishments, but because the preaching had need of it, and the weaker sort had need of the consolation arising therefrom.
10:59
他說:「你也要防備他;
'Him do you also,' he says, 'beware of;
10:60
for he has greatly withstood our words.'
10:61
That is, 'He makes war and sets himself in opposition.'
10:62
他並不說:「懲罰他、責打他、把他趕走」——雖然藉著所賜的恩典行這些事原是可能的;
And he did not say, 'Punish him, chastise him, drive him away'—although it was possible to accomplish these things through the grace given him;
10:63
but none of these; nor does he arm him against the man, but only bids him withdraw, yielding the punishment to God.
10:64
他說「主必報應他」這話,正是為了安慰那些較軟弱的人;
And it was for the comfort of the weaker sort that he said this, 'He will repay him';
10:65
which is also either a prophecy or an imprecation.
10:66
And that he says these things in order to anoint his disciple is clear also from what follows.
10:67
But see again how he recounts other trials of his own.
10:68
'At my first defense,' he says, 'no one stood with me, but all forsook me.'
10:69
Do you see how he spares his own people? And yet they had done a dreadful thing.
10:70
For it is not the same thing to be despised by outsiders and by one's own people.
10:71
你看那加重的沮喪麼?你不能說:「我雖受外人攻擊,卻有自己人的照顧與同盟為我的安慰」;
Do you see the intensified dejection? You cannot say, 'By outsiders I was warred upon, but I had for my consolation the care and the alliance of my own people';
10:72
'All forsook me,' he says.
10:73
So then this was no small sin.
10:74
因為在戰場上,若有人撇下處於危險中的人,抽身脫離仇敵之手,就理當被自己的同袍擊打,因他已敗壞並出賣了全局;
For if in war the man who abandons one in peril, and withdraws himself from the enemy's hand, is justly struck down by his own comrades as having ruined and betrayed the whole cause;
10:75
how much more so in the preaching of the Gospel.
10:76
然而他所說的初次申訴是指甚麼呢?他已經站在尼祿面前,並且脫身了;
But what first defense does he mean? He had already stood before Nero, and escaped;
10:77
but when he had catechized Nero's cupbearer, then Nero had him beheaded.
10:78
Behold again exhortation to the disciple through what follows:
10:79
'But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me.'
10:80
For God does not permit the one forsaken by men to suffer anything dreadful.
10:81
他說:「主加給我力量」;
'And He strengthened me,' he says;
10:82
that is, He granted boldness of speech, He did not let me fall.
10:83
「叫這傳道的信息藉著我得以完全傳開」;
'That through me the preaching might be fully accomplished';
10:84
Behold his great humility of mind!
10:85
It was not as one worthy to obtain the gift, he says, that He strengthened me, but 'that the message might be fully proclaimed, with which I had been entrusted.'
10:86
As though one were to bear the purple robe and the diadem, and be preserved for its sake.
10:87
'And that,' he says, 'all the nations might hear.'
10:88
What does this mean? That the splendour of the preaching, he says, might become manifest to all, and the tender care of the providence watching over me.
10:89
'And He delivered me out of the mouth of the lion;'
10:90
'and the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work.'
10:91
See how near he came to dying.
10:92
He had fallen into the very throat of the lion.
10:93
For he calls Nero a lion, on account of the savagery and the strength of his rule, and its terror that struck men dumb.
10:94
'And the Lord delivered me,' he says, 'and He will deliver me.'
10:95
If He will deliver him again, how did he say, 'I am already being poured out as a drink offering'? But attend closely to the wording.
10:96
'He delivered me,' he says, 'out of the mouth of the lion;'
10:97
and again, 'He will deliver me'—no longer out of the mouth, but what? 'From every evil work.'
10:98
因為那時他把我從危險中搶救出來;
For at that time He snatched me out of dangers;
10:99
but since what was sufficient for the Gospel has now been accomplished, He will deliver me once more from every sin—that is, He will not permit me to depart condemned.
10:100
For this too—being able to withstand sin even unto blood, and not to yield—is to be delivered from another lion, namely the devil.
10:101
So that this deliverance is greater than the former one, at the very moment when he seems to have been given up.
10:102
'And He will save me unto His heavenly kingdom;'
10:103
'to whom be the glory unto the ages of ages.'
10:104
This, then, is salvation—when we shine forth yonder.
10:105
What does 'He will save me unto His kingdom' mean? He will snatch me, he says, from every charge, and will keep me safe yonder.
10:106
For this is to be saved unto the kingdom: to die here for its sake.
10:107
For 'he that hateth his life in this world,' he says, 'shall keep it unto life eternal.'
10:108
'Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.'
10:109
For he himself was there at Rome, as he says.
10:110
'The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy from the Lord in that day.'
10:111
By this greeting he makes those in the household more eager after such noble deeds.
10:112
'Salute,' he says, 'Prisca and Aquila.'
10:113
These are they whom he continually remembers, with whom also he lodged, who took Apollos to themselves.
10:114
依我看來,他把那妻子列在前面,是因為她更加熱心、更加忠信;
And he puts the wife first, as it seems to me, inasmuch as she was more zealous and more faithful;
10:115
因為那時也是她接待了亞波羅;
for she too at that time took Apollos to herself;
10:116
or else he does this without any particular distinction.
10:117
這樣的題名對他們乃是不小的安慰,更帶著尊敬與愛的表記,也是眾多恩典的分享;
And this mention was no small comfort to them, but carried a token of honour and love, and a partaking of much grace;
10:118
for even the mere greeting of that holy and blessed man was enough to fill with much grace the one who received the salutation.
10:119
'Erastus abode at Corinth, but Trophimus I left at Miletus sick.'
10:120
This man, together with Tychicus, we know from the Book of Acts to have gone up with him from Judea, and to have been constantly in his company, perhaps as being more diligent than the rest.
10:121
'But Trophimus,' he says, 'I left at Miletus sick.'
10:122
Why, then, did you not heal him, but leave him behind? The apostles could not do all things, or rather they did not order all things by the grace given them, lest anyone should reckon of them beyond what he sees.
10:123
This we see also in the case of the blessed and righteous men who lived before them.
10:124
神為甚麼不改變他那衰弱的光景呢?他屢次被憂愁和沮喪所擊打;
Why did He not change his frail condition? Often he was smitten with grief and despondency;
10:125
he did not enter into the land of promise.
10:126
For God permitted many things, so that the weakness of human nature might be shown.
10:127
For if, even when these things were done, the senseless Jews said, 'Where is Moses, who brought us up out of the land of Egypt?'—if he had also brought them into the land of promise, what would they not have suffered? If He had not permitted the fear of Pharaoh to prevail over him, would they not have thought him a god? So too concerning Paul and Barnabas we see the inhabitants of Lystra affected toward them, and thinking them gods, when they rent their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying and saying:
10:128
'Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you.'
10:129
And Peter again, when he had healed the man lame from his birth, and all were amazed at what had happened, answered and said:
10:130
'Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why fasten ye your eyes on us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made him to walk?' And hear again the blessed Paul saying:
10:131
'And there was given me a thorn in the flesh, that I should not be exalted overmuch.'
10:132
But this saying, he says, is one of humility.
10:133
For it was not for this that the thorn was given him, that he might be humble; nor did he say this for humility's sake alone, but also for other reasons.
10:134
See, then, how God in answering him does not say, 'My grace sufficeth thee, that thou be not exalted,' but what? 'For My power,' He says, 'is made perfect in weakness.'
10:135
And so the things that were done were shown to be manifest, and the whole was ascribed to God.
10:136
Διὰ.
For this reason he says also in another place:
10:137
'We have this treasure in earthen vessels,' that is, in bodies subject to suffering and weak.
10:138
Why? 'That the exceeding greatness of the power may be God's, and not from us.'
10:139
If the bodies were not subject to suffering, everything would have been ascribed to them.
10:140
在別處我們也看見他因疾病而憂傷;
And in another place also we see him grieving over sickness;
10:141
for concerning Epaphroditus he said:
10:142
'For indeed he was sick nigh unto death, but God had mercy on him;'
10:143
and there were many other things too of which he was ignorant, and this profitably both for himself and for those who were his disciples.
10:144
'But Trophimus,' he says, 'I left at Miletus sick.'
10:145
Miletus happens to be near Ephesus.
10:146
Was it, then, when he was sailing to Judea, or shall we say it was at some other time?
10:147
因為他到了羅馬以後,又往西班牙去了;
For after coming to Rome, he departed again to Spain;
10:148
but whether from there he came again to these parts, we do not know.
10:149
At any rate we see him bereft of all.
10:150
'For Demas,' he says, 'forsook me;'
10:151
'for Crescens is gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia;'
10:152
'Erastus abode at Corinth;'
10:153
'Trophimus I left at Miletus sick.'
10:154
'Do thy diligence to come before winter.'
10:155
Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia.
10:156
Some relate that this Linus was the second bishop of the Church of the Romans after Peter.
10:157
'And Linus,' he saith, 'and Claudia.'
10:158
Seest thou how women too were ardent and fervent in the faith? Such was Priscilla, such was this very Claudia—already crucified to the world, already drawn up in battle-array.
10:159
And why, when there were so many believers, doth he make mention of these women in particular? Is it not plain that it is because they had already departed in their resolve from worldly affairs?
10:160
For it is not possible for one who is a woman to be hindered.
10:161
For this too is a work of the grace of God, that it hinders this nature only in the affairs of this life—nay, not even there.
10:162
For the woman hath taken upon herself no small part of the whole administration, namely the keeping of the house.
10:163
But without that part, not even the affairs of the state could ever hold together.
10:164
For if the affairs of the household should be filled with tumult and confusion, each of those engaged in public life would be forced to sit at home, and the affairs of the city would be ill ordered.
10:165
So that neither in those matters hath she the lesser share, nor in these.
10:166
因為只要她願意,她能夠千萬次地為主捨命;
For she is able to die ten thousand deaths, if only she be willing;
10:167
無論如何,許多婦女確曾殉道作了見證;
many at any rate have borne witness as martyrs;
10:168
she is able to practise self-control, and even more than men, inasmuch as no such fierce flame troubleth her, and to display modesty and gravity, and holiness, 'without which no man shall see the Lord,' and contempt for riches, if only they will, and, in a word, all other virtues.
10:169
'Do thy diligence,' he saith, 'to come before winter.'
10:170
How he urgeth him on! And nowhere doth he set down what is grievous.
10:171
He saith not, 'before I die,' lest he should grieve him, but, 'Come before winter,' that thou be not detained.
10:172
'Eubulus,' he saith, 'greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.'
10:173
He mentioneth them not by name.
10:174
Seest thou that those others were more fervent? 'The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit.' Nothing is better than this prayer.
10:175
他彷彿說:「不要憂傷,因我要離世;
'Grieve not,' he saith, 'that I depart;
10:176
And he said not, 'With thee,' but, 'With thy spirit.'
10:177
The help is twofold—that of the grace of the Spirit, and that of God assisting her.
10:178
此外,若沒有屬靈的恩典臨在,神便不可能與我們同在;
And besides, it is not possible for God to be with us, if the spiritual grace be not present;
10:179
for if we were forsaken, how should He be with us? 'Grace be with us.'
10:180
此後他也為自己祈求;
And thereafter he prayeth for himself also;
10:181
就是說,願我們常得祂的喜悅,願我們在得著恩賜的同時也得著恩寵;
that is, that we may always be well-pleasing to Him, that we may have grace together with the gift;
10:182
for when this is present, there will be nothing grievous.
10:183
因為正如那見到君王、並在他面前蒙恩的人,覺不出任何令他憂傷的事;
For just as he who beholdeth the king, and hath favour with him, perceiveth nothing grievous;
10:184
so too, though we be forsaken by friends, though we fall into some dire calamity, we shall take no notice of it, so long as that grace is present and walleth us about as a fortress.
10:185
But how is it possible to draw this grace unto oneself? By doing what is pleasing to God, and by obeying Him in all things.
10:186
就是在大戶人家中,我們豈不也看見那些蒙恩寵的僕人,正是那些不顧自己私事,反倒全心全意、殷勤熱切地料理主人一切事務的人嗎——他們如此善於安排一切,並非單出於作僕役的必然,而是出於熱心與愛戴?就是當他們常在主人眼前,當他們在家中往來奔忙,當他們不經營任何私事,也不掛慮自己的產業,反倒以主人的利益代替自己的利益?因為那把主人的事當作自己的事的人,並非把主人的事化為己有,倒是把自己整個獻給了主人的事;
Do we not even in great households see those servants enjoying favour who care not for their own concerns, but manage all their masters' affairs with their whole soul and eagerness—not out of the mere necessity of servitude, but out of zeal and affection—ordering all things well? When they are ever before their masters' eyes, when they busy themselves about the house, when they transact no private business, nor take thought for their own things, but rather hold their masters' interests in place of their own? For he who hath made his master's affairs his own hath not made his master's affairs his own, but hath made his own affairs his master's;
10:187
he giveth orders in like manner as his master in what belongeth to him, he beareth rule in like manner as his master.
10:188
許多僕役怕他甚於怕主人,並且這人所吩咐的,主人也照樣吩咐;
And many of the servants fear him more than the master, and whatever this man saith, that saith the master also;
10:189
all his enemies henceforth are in fear.
10:190
然而,那在屬世事務上輕看自己的產業、揀選了主人事務的人,並沒有因此把自己的利益丟棄,反倒得著了更大的;
But if he who in worldly matters hath despised his own things and chosen his master's did not thereby despise his own, but rather attained to greater things;
10:191
much more shall it be so in spiritual matters.
10:192
輕看你自己的所有,你便得著了神的所有;
Despise thine own things, and thou hast received the things of God;
10:193
輕看這地,就奪取諸天的國度;
Despise the earth, and seize the kingdom of heaven;
10:194
be thou terrible from thence, not from here.
10:195
你若從那裏顯為可畏,就不只叫人懼怕,也叫眾鬼、甚至叫魔鬼自己懼怕;
If thou art terrible from thence, thou shalt be terrible not to men only, but also to demons, and to the devil himself;
10:196
但你的憑藉若是這裏的錢財,你就要被那些邪靈輕看,甚至屢屢也被人輕看;
but if thy strength be from the riches that are here, thou wilt be an object of contempt to those powers, and oftentimes even to men;
10:197
你無論積聚多少財富,都不過在奴僕的事上富足;
however much thou grow rich, thou wilt be rich in the things of slaves;
10:198
but if thou despise these things, thou wilt be resplendent in the royal house.
10:199
Such were the apostles, who despised the servile household and the riches that are here.
10:200
And behold how they gave orders in their Master's affairs.
10:201
'Let such a one,' he saith, 'be delivered from disease,' another from demons; and 'bind that one, and loose this one.'
10:202
This was done on earth, but it was ratified as in the heavens.
10:203
'For whatsoever ye shall bind,' He saith, 'on earth, shall be bound in heaven.'
10:204
And He gave them even greater authority than His own.
10:205
And that I have not lied, hear Him saying:
10:206
'He that believeth on Me, greater works than these that I do shall he do.'
10:207
Why so? Because in this way too the honour passeth over unto the Master.
10:208
For in our own affairs also, when a servant can do great things, the master is the more admired.
10:209
For if the servant is able to do so much, how much more he that ruleth over him? But if any one, forsaking his master's service, should take thought for his own wife and child and household servant, and desire to grow rich and lay up store for himself there, either by stealing or by damaging his master's goods, he quickly destroyeth himself as well, together with his riches.
10:210
所以,我懇求你們,我們既有這些榜樣,就不要為自己的產業掛慮,好叫我們得以顧念自己;
Wherefore, having these examples, I beseech you, let us not take thought for our own things, that we may take thought for ourselves;
10:211
let us despise them, that we may gain them.
10:212
我們若輕看它們,祂自己就要看顧它們;
If we despise them, He Himself will take care of them;
10:213
if we take care of them, God will despise them.
10:214
讓我們在神的事上勞苦,而不在我們自己的事上——不,倒不如說,也正是在我們自己的事上;
Let us labour in the things of God, not in our own—nay rather, in our own too;
10:215
我所說的不是天,不是地,也不是世上的萬物;
I speak not of heaven, I speak not of earth, I speak not of the things in the world;
10:216
因為這些都與祂不相配;這些不單屬於我們,也屬於那不信的人;
for these are unworthy of Him; these belong not to us only, but also to the unbelievers;
10:217
那麼我說甚麼才是屬於祂的呢?就是榮耀、國度;
but what do I say are His? Glory, kingdom;
10:218
these are both His, and ours through Him.
10:219
怎麼說呢?他說:「我們若與祂同死,也必與祂同活;
How? 'If we died with Him,' he saith, 'we shall also live with Him;
10:220
if we endure, we shall also reign with Him.'
10:221
We are become joint-heirs, and are called brethren.
10:222
祂既向上拉我們,並拉我們歸向祂自己,我們為何把自己往下拖呢?我們要窮乏到幾時,要貧困到幾時?諸天就擺在眼前,我們卻圍著這地打轉麼?有諸天的國度,我們卻揀選這裏的貧窮麼?有不朽的生命,我們卻在木頭、石塊與田地上耗費自己麼?你要成為富足——這也正是我所願的;
Why do we drag ourselves downward, when He draweth us upward and unto Himself? How long shall we be needy, how long poor? Heaven lieth before us, and do we busy ourselves about the earth? A kingdom of heaven, and do we choose the poverty that is here? Immortal life, and do we wear ourselves out over timber and stones and fields? Become rich—this too is my desire;
10:223
你要多多得著,並要奪取;
gain more, and seize;
10:224
here it is the not gaining more that is the charge against thee, here it is the not seizing that is the accusation.
10:225
What then is this? 'The kingdom of heaven,' He says, 'suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.'
10:226
Become violent there, become a plunderer; that which is seized is in no way diminished.
10:227
For virtue is not divided, nor is godliness diminished, nor is the kingdom of heaven.
10:228
當你奪取它時,美德反而增長;
Then virtue increases, when you seize it;
10:229
then bodily things are diminished, when you seize it.
10:230
Let there be ten thousand men in a city.
10:231
他們若都去奪取美德與公義,就使它增多;
If all of them seize after virtue and righteousness, they multiply it;
10:232
for among the ten thousand there come to be righteous men.
10:233
But if they do not seize it, they have diminished it.
10:234
Do you see that in being seized good things rather increase,
10:235
whereas these bodily things in being seized rather diminish? Let us not, then, sit down beside poverty, but let us choose wealth.
10:236
It is the wealth of God that there should be many who enjoy the kingdom.
10:237
'He is rich,' it says, 'unto all and upon all that call upon Him.'
10:238
去增添祂的產業吧;
Increase His substance;
10:239
and you will increase it if you seize, if you take more, if you use violence.
10:240
Why is this? Because many are they who hinder us: wives, children, cares, worldly affairs, and along with these the demons, and the very leader of the demons himself, the devil.
10:241
There is need, therefore, of violence; there is need of endurance.
10:242
He who uses violence is in the midst of toils.
10:243
How so? He endures all things, and stands firm against necessity.
10:244
How so? He all but attempts things impossible.
10:245
If then those who use violence are of such a kind, but we do not even attempt the things that are possible, when shall we succeed? When shall we enjoy the things we long for? 'The violent,' He says, 'take the kingdom of heaven by force.'
10:246
For it does not lie open simply, nor is it ready at hand.
10:247
He who seizes is at all times sober, wide awake, thinking and taking thought, so as to seize opportunely upon his plunder.
10:248
Do you not see in wars that he who wishes to seize spoil keeps watch through the whole night, and is armed through the whole night? If, then, those who seize the things of this life keep watch by night and arm themselves, how is it that we, who wish to seize spiritual things—which require even greater zeal than these—sleep and snore even in the daytime, and continue always unarmed and naked? For he who is caught up in sins is unarmed and naked, just as he who is in righteousness is armed.
10:249
We do not fortify ourselves with almsgiving; we do not make ready for ourselves the lamps that are kindled; we do not
10:250
arm ourselves together with spiritual weapons; we do not learn the way that leads thither; we are not sober; we are not awake.
10:251
For this reason we are able to seize nothing.
10:252
若有人想要攻取一個王國,他豈不先把千萬次死亡擺在自己眼前嗎?豈不先武裝自己,先操練戰陣之術嗎?豈不為此竭盡一切,然後才發動攻擊嗎?我們卻不是這樣,反倒想在睡夢中奪取;
If anyone should wish to make an assault upon a kingdom, does he not first set before himself ten thousand deaths? Does he not first equip himself, first practise the art of war? Does he not do everything for this end, and only so rush to the assault? But we do not act so; rather, we wish to seize while asleep;
10:253
and for this very reason we go away with empty hands.
10:254
你豈沒有看見那些掠奪的人,怎樣奔逃、怎樣飛跑、怎樣衝破一切阻攔嗎?我們必須奔跑;
Do you not see those who plunder, how they flee, how they run, how they cut clean through everything? There is need of running;
10:255
for immediately the devil runs down after you, and commands those in front to lay hold of you.
10:256
但你若剛強,若警醒,就把這一個踢開,把那一個推倒,如同飛鳥一般脫離了他們眾人;
But if you are strong, if you are wide awake, you have kicked away the one and thrust off the other, and escaped them all like a winged creature;
10:257
and thereafter you may depart hence, and pass beyond the market-place and its great uproar—which is this present life—and come to the heights above these, which is the age to come.
10:258
For just as in a wilderness, there is no uproar, none to trouble, none to hold back.
10:259
你已經奪得了嗎?奪取之後只需稍加用力,免得所得的又被奪去;
Have you seized it? After the seizure there is need of but little effort, so that what has been taken be not snatched away;
10:260
if we run, if we look at none of the things that lie before our eyes, if we take thought for nothing else save to escape those who hinder us, we shall be able to hold fast in safety the things we have seized.
10:261
你已奪得了貞潔嗎?不要逗留,快逃,遠遠離開魔鬼;
Have you seized chastity? Do not linger; flee; get far away from the devil;
10:262
if he sees that he can no longer overtake you, neither will he pursue.
10:263
So too do we, when we no longer see those who have seized anything, cease—as though giving up—neither pursuing them ourselves nor urging others to lay hold of them, but we let them go away and remain untouched.
10:264
So do you also run vigorously at the very outset.
10:265
當你遠離了魔鬼,他就必不再下手,你反倒必安然無虞,坦然無懼地享受那說不盡的美善;
When you have gotten far from the devil, he will no longer even make the attempt, but you will be in safety, enjoying the ineffable good things without fear;
10:266
which may it be granted to us all to attain, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honour, and worship, now and ever, and unto the ages of the ages. Amen.
