'But know this, that in the last days grievous times shall come.'
8:2
'For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, implacable, without natural affection, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good, traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.'
8:3
If anyone is now vexed at the heretics, let him consider that such things happened even from the beginning, the devil always setting falsehood alongside the truth.
8:4
God from the beginning promised good things; the devil also came, making his own promises.
8:5
God planted a paradise; the devil deceived, saying, 'You shall be as gods.'
8:6
For since he could show nothing by deeds, in words he promises the greater things.
8:7
For such are deceivers.
8:8
在這之後有該隱和亞伯;接著有塞特的眾子和世人的女兒;接著有含和雅弗、亞伯拉罕和法老、雅各和以掃;
After these came Cain and Abel; then the sons of Seth and the daughters of men; then Ham and Japheth, Abraham and Pharaoh, Jacob and Esau;
8:9
and even to the end it is thus: Moses and the magicians, the prophets and the false prophets, the apostles and the false apostles, Christ and antichrist.
8:10
Both formerly, then, and at that time the same things existed.
8:11
Then there was Theudas, then Simon, when the apostles were; and these men about Hermogenes and Philetus.
8:12
There is, therefore, no time when falsehood has not stood alongside the truth.
8:13
Let us not, then, be vexed; these things were foretold from of old.
8:14
'Know that in the last days grievous times shall come.'
8:15
'For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection.'
8:16
For he who is unthankful toward his benefactor, what would he ever become toward others? The unthankful man is implacable, the unthankful man is without natural affection.
8:17
For those who are conscious of no good in themselves, having as a kind of consolation the reviling of others' reputations, commit countless offenses and sins.
8:18
Without self-control—both of tongue and of belly and of all else.
8:19
Hence comes cruelty, hence comes harshness—whenever a man is a lover of money, whenever a man is a lover of self, whenever he is unthankful, whenever he is lustful.
8:20
Without love of the good, traitors, headstrong.
8:21
'Headstrong'—that is, having nothing steadfast or firmly grounded.
8:22
Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.
8:23
Having a form of godliness, but having denied its power.
8:24
And writing in the Epistle to the Romans he speaks in some such way, saying:
8:25
Having the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
8:26
然而在那裡,他是以稱讚的口吻提到它;
But there he sets it down by way of praise;
8:27
whereas here, beyond all the other faults, he shows this sin to be the more grievous.
8:28
Why so? Because he did not take it in the same sense.
8:29
For just as he often takes 'image' in the sense of likeness, but often in the sense of what is lifeless and worthless—
8:30
as, for instance, he himself says, writing to the Corinthians:
8:31
男人本不該蒙著頭,因為他是神的形像和榮耀;
For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God;
8:32
Nevertheless, man walks about as an image (in a mere phantom).
8:33
And Scripture takes the lion at one time in a royal sense—
8:34
經上說:「他蹲伏如公獅,又如母獅;
'He lay down,' it says, 'as a lion, and as a lion's whelp;
8:35
who shall rouse him up?'—but at another time in a rapacious sense:
8:36
As a lion seizing prey and roaring.
8:37
So too we ourselves do the same thing.
8:38
因為既然事物是複合而多樣的,理所當然可以被引作許多不同的形像和例證;
For since things are composite and manifold, they are fittingly taken up into many images and illustrations;
8:39
例如,當我們想稱讚一位美人時,就把她比作圖畫;而當我們想稱讚圖畫時,就說它彷彿會說話、會出聲;
for instance, when we wish to admire a beautiful woman, we liken her to paintings; and when we wish to admire paintings, we say that they speak, that they utter sound;
8:40
for in the former case it is because the painting came near to likeness, and in the latter because the woman is near to that beauty.
8:41
「規模」(外貌)也是如此:在那裡它是指敬虔的某種樣式、形像、教導與原型;
So too with the 'form': there it means a certain pattern and image and instruction and archetype of godliness;
8:42
but here it signifies something lifeless and dead, mere shape and outline and pretense.
8:43
如此看來,沒有行為的信心不過是沒有能力的空殼;
So then, faith without works is a mere shape without power;
8:44
for just as a body that is beautiful and blooming, when it has no strength but resembles painted figures, so too is right faith without works.
8:45
假設有一個人,貪愛錢財,賣主賣友,任意妄為;
For let us suppose that someone is covetous, a traitor, headstrong;
8:46
what is the gain, if he has nothing that becomes a Christian? when he does nothing of the things that mark out godliness, but even outdoes the pagans in impiety? when he is bent on the ruin of those about him? when on blasphemy against God? when he brings the doctrine into disrepute by his works? 'And from such,' he says, 'turn away.'
8:47
既然在末後的日子必有這樣的人出現,他怎麼又說「這等人你要躲開」呢?其實那時也很可能已有一些這樣的人,縱使還不至於過分,然而終究是有的;
If then in the last times such men shall arise, how does he say, 'And from these turn away'? It is likely that even then there were some such men, though not in excess, yet nonetheless there were;
8:48
but in truth, through that instance he exhorts all to turn away from such men.
8:49
'For of these,' he says, 'are they that creep into houses and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away by various lusts, ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.'
8:50
Do you see them employing the deceit of old, the very weapon which the devil used against Adam? 'Creeping into houses,' he says.
8:51
Do you see how by saying 'creeping in' he has disclosed their shamelessness, their baseness, their deceit, their flattery? 'And leading captive silly women.'
8:52
So that the 'silly woman' is one easily deceived, and far removed from a man.
8:53
It is characteristic of women to be deceived—or rather not even of women, but of silly women.
8:54
See from what source it comes about that they too are persuaded: from their sins, from having nothing good on their own conscience.
8:55
他說「擔負」(堆積如山),用得極為貼切;
And very fittingly he said 'laden' (heaped up);
8:56
for by this he sets forth the multitude of their sins, and their disorder and confusion.
8:57
'Led away by various lusts.'
8:58
他並非在控告她們的本性;
He did not accuse their nature;
8:59
for he did not simply say 'women,' but 'women of this kind.'
8:60
What does 'various' mean? Here he hinted at many things—luxury, indecency, lasciviousness.
8:61
'By various lusts,' he says—that is, of money, of glory, of luxury, of self-will, of honor.
8:62
And perhaps he also hints at other shameful lusts.
8:63
'Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.'
8:64
Why does he say these things? Not by way of pardoning them, but rather threatening them severely.
8:65
For since they buried themselves under those lusts and sins, their understanding was hardened.
8:66
And just as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so also do these men resist the truth.
8:67
Who are these magicians in the days of Moses? and how is it that their names are nowhere else recorded? Either it was handed down without being written, or it is likely that Paul knew it from the Spirit.
8:68
他說:「這等人也照樣抵擋真理,他們的心地敗壞,在信仰上是可廢棄的;
'So also these,' he says, 'shall resist the truth: men corrupted in mind, reprobate concerning the faith;
8:69
but they shall proceed no further.'
8:70
For their folly shall be made manifest to all, as also that of those men came about.
8:71
How then does he say elsewhere that 'they shall proceed further in impiety,'
8:72
but here, 'they shall proceed no further'? There he says this—that once they begin
8:73
標新立異、迷惑人,就不會止住錯謬,反倒不斷地捏造新的詭計和敗壞的教義;
to innovate and lead astray, they will not cease from error, but will ever be devising new deceits and corrupt doctrines;
8:74
for error nowhere stands still.
8:75
But here he says this—that they shall not deceive, nor sweep men away with them, and even if at the outset they seem to beguile some, yet they shall quickly be found out.
8:76
For that it is of this that he speaks, hear what he says:
8:77
'For their folly shall be manifest to all,'
8:78
'as also that of those men came about.'
8:79
For even though the things of error flourish for a while at first, they do not endure to the end.
8:80
因為那些本性並不美善、只是看似美善的事物,其性質正是如此;
For such is the nature of things that are not good by nature, but only seem to be good;
8:81
for a season it flourishes, and is detected, and perishes.
8:82
Ἀλλ' οὐ τὰ.
但我們的事卻不是這樣;
But our things are not like this;
8:83
因為我們的事並不在乎欺騙;
for our things are not in deceit;
8:84
for who would choose even to die for the sake of a deception? 'But you have followed closely my teaching.'
8:85
for you did not simply come alongside, but followed closely.
8:86
Here he indicates that a long time had passed, from his saying, 'You have followed closely my teaching.'
8:87
This is a matter of eagerness and of the resolute firmness of the soul.
8:88
'Was I not,' he says, 'speaking these things, yet not doing them, nor practicing philosophy in words alone?'
8:89
'How was it,' he says, 'that none of these things disturbed me?'
8:90
Toward the heretics I displayed great long-suffering.
8:91
By patient endurance, amid the persecutions.
8:92
In the persecutions, in the sufferings.
8:93
For these two things trouble the teacher: that the heretics are many, and that he does not persevere amid the sufferings.
8:94
Nevertheless, concerning these matters he discoursed at length: that such men existed of old and will exist hereafter, that no age is free of them, that they can do us no harm, and that in the world there are vessels of gold and of silver.
8:95
Do you see how he goes on to discourse concerning the afflictions? 'What things befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra.'
8:96
那麼他為何從眾多之中只提這幾件?因為其餘的事這人本已熟知;
Why then has he mentioned these alone out of many? Because the rest were well known to the man;
8:97
或許他所題起的,乃是近日發生的事,而非久遠以前的事;
and perhaps he recalls these as recent events, not those of long ago;
8:98
他也不逐一按類細數;
and he does not enumerate them one kind at a time;
8:99
因為他既不好虛榮,也不貪求體面;
for he is neither vainglorious nor ambitious for honor;
8:100
for he speaks for the consolation of the disciple, not for display.
8:101
By Antioch he here means the one of Pisidia, and Lystra, from which Timothy came.
8:102
Both were for encouragement: that I too showed a noble readiness of spirit, and was not forsaken, and one cannot say that God delivered me up, but rather He wrought for me a more brilliant crown.
8:103
'What persecutions I endured,' he says, 'and out of them all the Lord delivered me.'
8:104
'And all who wish to live godly in Christ Jesus shall be persecuted.'
8:105
'But why do I speak at all of myself?' he says; 'every one of those who wish to live godly shall be persecuted.'
8:106
By persecutions he here means the afflictions and the pains.
8:107
因為一個行走美德之路的人,不可能沒有憂愁,沒有患難、痛苦與試煉;
For it is not possible for a man traveling the road of virtue to be without grief, without affliction, pain, and trials;
8:108
for how could it be, seeing that he travels the strait and narrow way? that he has heard, 'In the world you shall have tribulation'? If in that age Job said, 'The life of man upon earth is a trial,' how much more then? 'But evil men and impostors,' he says, 'shall advance to the worse, deceiving and being deceived.'
8:109
他說:「這些事一樣也不要攪擾你,倘若那些人享通,你卻在試煉之中;
'Let none of these things disturb you,' he says, 'if those men are in prosperity, but you in trials;
8:110
such is the nature of the matter.'
8:111
From my own case you can learn that it is not possible for a man who wars against the wicked not to be in affliction.
8:112
It is not possible for a boxer to be in luxury, nor for a wrestler to feast at ease.
8:113
Let none, therefore, of those who contend seek relaxation, let none seek to be at ease.
8:114
Again, the present life is a contest, a war, an affliction, a straitness, a trial—the arena of the contests.
8:115
安舒的時候是另有其時;
The seasons of relaxation are other;
8:116
this is the season of sweat, this is the season of toil.
8:117
No one who has stripped and anointed himself seeks relaxation.
8:118
You seek relaxation—why then did you strip? why did you raise your hands to fight?
8:119
'And how am I not raising my hands even now?' he says. When you do not master your desires, when you do not fight against the violence of nature.
8:120
'But you, abide in the things you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from a babe you have known the sacred writings which are able to make you wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus.'
8:121
What is this? Just as the prophet David exhorted, saying, 'Fret not thyself because of evildoers,' this same thing he too exhorts, saying:
8:122
'But you, abide in the things you have learned and been assured of.'
8:123
Not simply 'You have learned,' but also 'You have been assured,' that is, 'You have believed.'
8:124
'And what indeed have I believed? That this is the life.'
8:125
那麼,縱使你在此看見與你所信相反的事,也不要驚惶;因為亞伯拉罕也曾看見相反的事,卻絲毫沒有受害;
Even if, then, you see here things contrary to what you have believed, be not troubled; for Abraham also saw contrary things, yet suffered nothing;
8:126
he heard, 'In Isaac shall your seed be called,' and yet he was commanded to slay Isaac, and he was neither troubled nor disturbed.
8:127
不要有人因惡人而跌倒;
Let no one be offended at the wicked;
8:128
this the Scripture said from of old.
8:129
那麼,若是好人歡喜,惡人受罰,又當如何?前者是有可能發生的,後者卻不然;
What then, when both the good rejoice and the wicked are punished? The one is likely to come to pass, but the other no longer so;
8:130
for it is possible that the wicked be punished, but it is not possible that the good should always rejoice.
8:131
No one was equal to Paul, and yet he passed all his time in affliction, in tears, in groanings night and day.
8:132
'For with tears,' he says, 'night and day for three years I ceased not to admonish;'
8:133
and again, 'My daily pressure of care,' he says.
8:134
He did not rejoice today and grieve tomorrow, but day by day he ceased not to be in pain. How then does he say, 'The wicked shall advance to the worse'? He did not say that they attain to relaxation, but 'They shall advance to the worse;'
8:135
this advancement is to the worse.
8:136
He did not say, 'They shall be in prosperity.'
8:137
But if they are also punished, they are punished for this reason: that you may not suppose sins to go unpunished.
8:138
For since hell does not avail to restrain us from wickedness, God, sparing us, rouses and raises us up.
8:139
若沒有一個惡人受罰,就沒有人會以為神在掌管人間的事;
If no wicked man were punished, no one would think that God presides over human affairs;
8:140
if all were punished, no one would expect there to be a resurrection, as though all received their recompense here.
8:141
為此緣故,祂既施行懲罰,又不施行懲罰;
For this reason He both punishes and does not punish;
8:142
for this reason the righteous are afflicted here, because they are sojourners, because they are strangers, because they are in a foreign land.
8:143
義人忍受這些事,乃是為了受試驗的緣故;
The righteous, then, endure these things for the sake of testing;
8:144
for hear God saying to Job, 'Do you think I have dealt with you for any other reason than that you might be shown to be righteous?' But the sinners, if ever they endure any such thing, pay the penalty of their sins.
8:145
所以,我們在凡事上都要感謝神,或是這樣,或是那樣;
In all things, therefore, let us give thanks to God, whether it be thus or otherwise;
8:146
He does nothing out of hatred, nor because He turns away from us, but ordering both out of care and solicitude for us.
8:147
'Knowing,' he says, 'that from a babe you have known the sacred writings.'
8:148
That is, 'From your earliest age you learned the sacred writings.'
8:149
And by 'sacred writings' he calls the divine Scriptures.
8:150
In these you were nurtured, so that through them your faith ought to be firm, and you ought to suffer no harm.
8:151
因為根扎得深,並非靠著長久的時日才滋養起來的;
For the root lies deep, not nourished over a long time;
8:152
nothing can turn it aside.
8:153
Having said 'the sacred writings,' he added, 'which are able to make you wise;'
8:154
that is, 'They do not permit you to suffer anything foolish, or such as the multitude suffer.'
8:155
For he who knows the Scriptures as one ought to know them is offended at none of the things that happen, but bears all things nobly, committing some to faith and to the incomprehensibility of God's economy, and knowing the reasons of others, and finding examples in the Scriptures.
8:156
Since even not to pry into everything, and not to wish to know everything, is a great proof of knowledge.
8:157
And if you wish, I will speak by way of an example.
8:158
假設有一條河——或者說,假設有多條河(我這樣說並非勉強讓步,乃是就河流的實情而論);
Let there be a river—or rather, let there be rivers (I speak not by way of concession, but of what rivers actually are);
8:159
並非所有的河深淺都相等,有些河床較淺,有些卻深得足以淹沒那不知情的人;
not all happen to be equal in depth, but some have a shallower bed, while others are deep and sufficient to drown one who does not know it;
8:160
And here indeed there are whirlpools, but there none any longer.
8:161
To be willing to attempt all things alike is a good thing; and not to wish to know all the depths is no small proof of knowledge.
8:162
For he who is willing to venture across every part of the river is precisely the one who does not know the peculiarities of rivers, and will often perish through that very rashness by which he ventured into the depths—the same boldness by which he was crossing where it was not deep.
8:163
So it is also in the case of God: he who wishes to know all things and boldly ventures upon all, this very man does not know at all what God is.
8:164
然而在河流中,大部分是安全的,漩渦與深處為數不多;
But in rivers the greater part is safe, and few are the whirlpools and depths;
8:165
whereas in the case of God the greater part is hidden, and it is impossible to trace out his works.
8:166
Why then do you force yourself to plunge headlong to your ruin? Know only this: that God orders all things, that he provides for all, that we are endowed with free will, that some things he works and others he permits, that he wills nothing evil to come to pass, that not all things happen from his will but also from ours—all evils from ours alone, all good things from both ours and his inclination toward us—and that nothing escapes his notice.
8:167
那麼你既知道這事,就當一一數算哪些是善的,哪些是惡的,哪些是無關緊要的;
Then, knowing this, do you reckon up which things are good, which are evil, and which are indifferent;
8:168
for example: virtue is a good thing, baseness is an evil thing; indifferent are wealth, poverty, life, death.
8:169
你若知道這些,也必連同這些知道:義人之所以受苦,是為要得冠冕;罪人之所以受苦,是為要償還他們罪的刑罰;
If you know these things, you will know together with them that the righteous are afflicted for this reason, that they may be crowned, and the sinners, that they may pay the penalty of their sins;
8:170
yet not all sinners pay the penalty here, lest the many should disbelieve in the resurrection, just as not all the righteous are afflicted, lest you should suppose that wickedness is praiseworthy rather than virtue.
8:171
這些就是準則與定則;
These are the rules and the definitions;
8:172
bring whatever you will to them, and you will not be at a loss.
8:173
因為正如在教書先生當中有六千這個數目,一切都歸於這數之下計算,凡事都可藉這六千的準則來除、來乘,藉這數目一切都得以運轉,凡學過書文的人都知道這事;
For just as among schoolmasters there is the number of six thousand, and under it all things are reckoned, and it is possible to divide and multiply all things by the rule of the six thousand, and through this number everything is worked out, and all who have learned letters know this;
8:174
so if a man knows these rules, which again I will state more concisely, he is never made to stumble.
8:175
那麼這些準則是甚麼呢?就是:德行是善,邪惡是惡;疾病、貧窮、陰謀、誹謗以及諸如此類的事,都是無關緊要的;
What then are they? That virtue is good, that vice is evil, that indifferent are sicknesses, poverty, plots, slanders, and all such things;
8:176
義人在今生受苦;
that the righteous are afflicted here;
8:177
但若有些人也享福,乃是為叫德行不顯為可憎的;
but if some also fare well, it is that virtue may not seem to be hateful;
8:178
ὅτι οἱ.
惡人歡樂,乃是為叫他們在那裡受懲罰;
that the wicked rejoice, that they may be punished there;
8:179
但若有些人也受懲罰,乃是為叫邪惡不顯為善的,也叫諸般行為不至於不受報應;
but if some are also punished, so that wickedness may not seem to be a good thing, nor that deeds go unpunished;
8:180
並非所有人都受懲罰,免得復活的時候被人不信;
that not all are punished, lest the time of the resurrection should be disbelieved;
8:181
在善人中也有些人有卑劣的行為,就在今生把這些除盡;在惡人中也有些人有良善的行為,就在今生得了報償,好叫他們在那裡受懲罰;
that among the good there are some who have base deeds, and here they lay them aside, and among the wicked some who have worthy deeds, and here they receive their recompense, that there they may be punished;
8:182
神的作為大部分是不可測度的;
that the greater part of God's works are incomprehensible;
8:183
that great is the distance between us and him, and as great as cannot be told.
8:184
If we take these things into account, nothing will be able to trouble us.
8:185
我們若不斷地聽從聖經,也必尋見許多這樣的例子;
If we hearken continually to the Scriptures, we shall find also many such examples;
8:186
'The things,' he says, 'that are able to make you wise unto salvation.'
8:187
因為聖經確實陳明當行的與不當行的;
For indeed the Scriptures set forth both what is to be done and what is not to be done;
8:188
for hear this blessed man saying elsewhere: 'You are confident that you yourself are a guide of the blind, a light of those in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes.'
8:189
Do you see that the Law is a light to those in darkness? But if he who displays the letter is a light—the letter that kills—what then is he who displays the Spirit that gives life? If the Old Covenant is a light, what is the New, where so much has been unfolded? where the distance is as great as if to those who knew nothing beyond the earth one should open the heaven, and cause them to survey all things.
8:190
Concerning hell we have learned, concerning the kingdom, concerning the judgment.
8:191
Let us not put our trust in irrational things.
8:192
'Why then,' he says, 'do they speak, and it comes to pass?' Because you believe it—if indeed it does come to pass.
8:193
He has taken you captive; he is master of your life; he orders it as he wills.
8:194
Tell me: if some robber-chief should have under his hands and in his power a king's son who had fled to him for refuge and had come to love the wilderness and dwelling together with him, would he be able to tell whether he shall die or live? Assuredly he would be quite able.
8:195
How so? Not because he foreknows the future, but because he has become master of either outcome—of destroying and of saving the boy—since that one has made him master.
8:196
因為他若願意就能殺死,他若定意也照樣能釋放;
For he will be able to slay, if he wishes, and likewise to release, if he should so choose;
8:197
if he says that you will be rich or poor, he himself is master of both.
8:198
The greater part of the world have given themselves over into the hands of the devil.
8:199
還有另一方面:人一旦習慣了相信,這也大大助長了那些行騙的人;
And in another way too: when a man has become accustomed to believe, this also contributes much to those deceivers;
8:200
for no one pays attention to the failures, but only if somewhere they should succeed.
8:201
But if they have any power of foreknowledge, bring them to me, who am a believer.
8:202
For to be delivered from these things is no matter of boasting.
8:203
因為我滿了罪;
For I am full of sins;
8:204
然而我卻不因這些而灰心喪膽;
yet on account of these I would not be cast down;
8:205
by the grace of God I laugh all these things to scorn.
8:206
Bring to me the man who is a magician; if he has any power of foreknowledge, let him tell what shall befall me, what shall be mine tomorrow.
8:207
因為我在那位君王的權下,他既不能管轄我,我也不臣服於他;
For I am under the authority of the King, and he has neither dominion over me nor my subjection;
8:208
I dwell far from his lurking-places and his caverns; I serve as a soldier under the King.
8:209
'But so-and-so stole,' he says, 'and so-and-so informed against him.'
8:210
首先,這連在各處也未必是真的,倒是可笑的謊言;
In the first place, this is not even everywhere true, but a laughing-stock and a falsehood;
8:211
but if they know anything, they ought rather to tell their own affairs: how the many votive offerings of the idols were stolen, how the great store of gold was melted down.
8:212
他們為何不預先告訴自己的祭司呢?可見他們一無所知;
Why did they not foretell it to their own priests? So then, they know nothing;
8:213
but for the sake of money they could not even speak, when their idol-temples were being burned and many were perishing along with them.
8:214
Why do they not spare their own salvation? But the thing is mere chance, if ever they foretell anything.
8:215
在我們中間有先知,但他們並不失準;
There are prophets among us, but they do not fail;
8:216
他們並非這件說真、那件卻說謊,乃是凡事都說真話;
they do not say this thing truly while lying about that, but they speak the truth in all things;
8:217
for this is the mark of foreknowledge.
8:218
我懇求你們,總要止住這瘋狂,如果你們真信基督;
Cease at length from this madness, I beseech you, if indeed you believe in Christ;
8:219
but if you do not believe, why do you tear yourselves apart, why do you deceive yourselves? How long will you go limping upon both your hams? For what reason do you approach him? What do you ask? The moment you approached, the moment you asked, you made yourself subject to bondage.
8:220
'No,' he says, 'it is not because I believe him to speak truly, but to put him to the test.'
8:221
But to test whether he speaks truly does not belong to one convinced that he lies, but to one who is still in doubt.
8:222
那麼你究竟為何要問將來要發生甚麼呢?因為他若說這話——某事將要發生,你當行此,就必逃脫——即便如此,人也斷不該拜偶像;不過這樣的糊塗還不算太大;
For what reason then do you ask what shall be? For if he says this—that such a thing shall be, do this and you shall escape—assuredly not even so ought one to worship idols; nevertheless the folly is not so great;
8:223
但他們若預言將來的事,那聽了的人所得的,不過是多餘的憂愁而已;
but if they foretell things to come, the one who learns gains nothing else than superfluous grief;
8:224
for the thing did not come to pass, yet he endured the grief and pickled himself in it.
8:225
If this were expedient, he would not... he provides for all, that we are endowed with free will, that some things he works and others he permits, that he wills nothing evil to come to pass, that not all things happen from his will but also from ours—all evils from ours alone, all good things from both ours and his inclination toward us—and that nothing escapes his notice.
8:226
那麼你既知道這事,就當一一數算哪些是善的,哪些是惡的,哪些是無關緊要的;
Then, knowing this, do you reckon up which things are good, which are evil, and which are indifferent;
8:227
for example: virtue is a good thing, baseness is an evil thing; indifferent are wealth, poverty, life, death.
8:228
你若知道這些,也必連同這些知道:義人之所以受苦,是為要得冠冕;罪人之所以受苦,是為要償還他們罪的刑罰;
If you know these things, you will know together with them that the righteous are afflicted for this reason, that they may be crowned, and the sinners, that they may pay the penalty of their sins;
8:229
yet not all sinners pay the penalty here, lest the many should disbelieve in the resurrection, just as not...
8:230
All the righteous are afflicted, that you may not suppose vice to be praiseworthy, but virtue.
8:231
這些乃是準則與定義;
These are rules and definitions;
8:232
apply them to whatever case you wish, and you will be at no loss.
8:233
正如在算術教師那裡有「六千」這個數目,一切都歸算於它之下,凡事都能藉著這「六千」的準則來除、來乘,凡事都藉著這個數目而運轉,凡學過文字的人都曉得這些;
For just as among the arithmeticians there is the number six thousand, and under it everything is reckoned, and it is possible to divide and multiply all things by the rule of the six thousand, and by this number everything is worked out—and all who have learned their letters know these things—
8:234
so too, if anyone knows these rules—which I will again state more briefly—he is never made to stumble.
8:235
那麼這些準則是什麼呢?就是:德行是善的,惡是壞的,而疾病、貧窮、陰謀、毀謗以及諸如此類的事,乃是無關緊要之事;
What then are they? That virtue is good, that vice is evil, that indifferent things are sickness, poverty, plots, slanders, and all such things;
8:236
義人在今世受苦難;
that the righteous are afflicted here;
8:237
但若有些人也享安樂,這是為叫德行不至於顯為可憎;
and if some also prosper, it is that virtue may not seem to be hateful;
8:238
ὅτι οἱ.
惡人在今世歡樂,是為叫他們在那裡受懲罰;
that the wicked rejoice, that they may be punished there;
8:239
但若有些人也在此受懲罰,這是為叫惡不至於顯為善,也免得這些事無人報應;
and if some are also punished, it is that vice may not seem to be good, nor that these matters go unavenged;
8:240
並非所有人都在此受懲罰,免得復活的時候被人懷疑不信;
that not all are punished, lest the appointed time of the resurrection be disbelieved;
8:241
在善人中也有些人有壞行為,就在今世把這些卸下了;在惡人中也有些人有好行為,就在今世得了報償,好叫他們在那裡受刑罰;
that even among the good there are some who have wicked works, and here lay them aside; and among the wicked there are some who have good works, and here receive their recompense, that there they may be punished;
8:242
神的作為大多是人所不能測透的;
that most of God's works are incomprehensible;
8:243
that great is the distance between us and Him, so great as cannot be told.
8:244
If we ponder these things, nothing will be able to trouble us.
8:245
我們若常常聽聖經,也必找到許多這樣的例證;
If we hear the Scriptures continually, we shall find many such examples too;
8:246
'The things,' he says, 'that are able to make you wise unto salvation.'
8:247
因為聖經既指示當行的事,也指示不當行的事;
For the Scriptures set forth both the things to be done and the things not to be done;
8:248
for hear this blessed man saying elsewhere: 'You are confident that you yourself are a guide of the blind, a light of those in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes.'
8:249
Do you see that the Law is a light to those in darkness? But if he who displays the letter is a light—the letter that kills—what then is he who displays the Spirit that gives life? If the Old Testament is a light, what is the New, where so many things have been unfolded? where the distance is as great as if to those who knew nothing beyond the earth one should open the heaven and enable them to survey all things.
8:250
Concerning hell we have learned, concerning the kingdom, concerning the judgment.
8:251
我們不可信靠那些無理性的事物;
Let us not put our trust in irrational things;
8:252
'Why is it then,' someone says, 'that they speak and it comes to pass?' It is because you believe—if indeed it does come to pass at all.
8:253
He has taken you captive; he is lord of your life; he manages it as he will.
8:254
Tell me, if some robber-chief should have under his hand and power a king's son who had fled to him and loved the wilderness and the dwelling with him, would he be able to say of him whether he shall die or shall live? Yes, indeed, he will be very well able.
8:255
How so? Not because he foreknows the future, but because he becomes lord of both—to destroy and to save the child—the child having made him lord.
8:256
因為他若願意,就能殺他;他若定意,同樣也能放他走;
For he will be able to slay him if he wishes, and likewise, if he chooses, he will be able to let him go;
8:257
if he says that you shall be rich or poor, he himself is lord of both.
8:258
The greater part of the world have given themselves into the hands of the devil.
8:259
還有另一方面,當人習慣了相信,這也大大助長了那些行騙者;
And in another way too, when a man has become accustomed to believing, this also greatly contributes to those deceivers;
8:260
for no one pays attention to their failures, but only to when they happen to succeed.
8:261
But if they have any power of foreknowledge, bring them to me, the believer.
8:262
For to be freed from these things is not a matter of boasting.
8:263
因為我是滿了罪的;
For I am full of sins;
8:264
然而我卻不因這些事而灰心喪膽;
yet on account of these things I would not be brought low;
8:265
by the grace of God I laugh them all to scorn.
8:266
Bring to me the man who is a magician; if he has any power of foreknowledge, let him tell me what shall befall me, what shall be mine tomorrow.
8:267
因為我是在君王的權下,他既不能作我的元首,也不能使我服在他之下;
For I am under the authority of the King, and he has no dominion over me nor any subjection of me;
8:268
I am far from his lurking-places and his caves; I serve as a soldier under the King.
8:269
'But so-and-so,' he says, 'committed a theft, and so-and-so gave information about him.'
8:270
首先,這連在各處也並非都是真的,反倒是笑柄與謊言;
First of all, this is not even everywhere true, but a laughing-stock and a lie;
8:271
but if they know anything, they ought rather to have told their own affairs—how the
8:272
many votive offerings of the idols were stolen, how the great quantity of gold was melted down.
8:273
他們為什麼不預先告訴他們自己的祭司呢?可見他們一無所知;
Why did they not foretell it to their own priests? So then they know nothing;
8:274
but for the sake of money they were not even able to speak, when their idol-temples were being burned and many were perishing along with them.
8:275
Why do they not spare their own salvation? But the thing is merely a matter of chance success, if perchance they do foretell anything.
8:276
在我們中間有先知,他們卻絕不落空;
Among us there are prophets, but they do not fail;
8:277
他們不是這件說真,那件說謊,乃是凡事都說真話;
they do not speak this truly and lie in that, but they speak the truth in all things;
8:278
for this is what belongs to foreknowledge.
8:279
我懇求你們,至終要停止這樣的瘋狂,倘若你們真信基督;
Cease at last from this madness, I beseech you, if indeed you believe in Christ;
8:280
but if you do not believe, why do you tear yourselves apart, why do you deceive yourselves? How long will you halt upon both your knees? For what purpose do you go to them? What do you ask? The moment you approached, the moment you asked, you made yourself their slave.
8:281
'No,' he says, 'I do not go believing that he speaks the truth, but to test him.'
8:282
But to test whether he speaks the truth is not the mark of one convinced that he lies, but of one still in doubt.
8:283
那麼你究竟為什麼要問將來要發生什麼呢?因為他若說:這樣那樣的事要發生,你做這做那就能躲避它—首先,即或如此,人也不該拜偶像,然而至少那樣的糊塗還不算太大;
For what purpose then do you ask what shall be? For if he says this, that such-and-such shall happen, do such-and-such and you shall escape it—first of all, not even so ought one to worship idols, yet at least the folly is not so great;
8:284
但他們若預言了將來的事,那聽了的人所得的,不過是無謂的憂愁而已;
but if they foretell the things to come, the one who learns gains nothing else than superfluous grief;
8:285
for the thing did not come to pass, yet he endured the grief and pickled himself in it.
8:286
這事若有益處,神就不會吝惜不給我們;
If this were profitable, God would not have grudged it to us;
8:287
He who told us the things in the heavens would not have begrudged it.
8:288
祂說:「因為我從父所聽見的一切,都已叫你們知道了;凡我從父所聽見的,都已告訴了你們」;
'For all things,' He says, 'that I heard from the Father I have made known to you; and all things whatsoever I heard from the Father I have declared to you';
8:289
and, 'I call you not servants, but friends.'
8:290
Why then did He not make these things known to us?
8:291
Because He wills that we should take no account of them.
8:292
既然為要顯明祂並非嫉惜,對古時的人,這類事就曾被告知,無論是關乎驢的事,或是別的一些事,因為他們還是嬰孩;
Since, to show that He does not begrudge it, to the ancients these things were told, both concerning an ass and certain other matters, because they were babes;
8:293
but to us, since He wills that we should have no concern about them, He did not even lay upon Himself this care of making them known to us.
8:294
但我們所學的是什麼呢?就是那些人所沒有學到的;
But what do we learn? That which those did not learn;
8:295
and the things which we have learned are these: that we shall be raised, that we shall be immortal, that we shall be incorruptible, that life has no end, that all things shall pass away, that we shall be caught up in the clouds, that the wicked shall pay the penalty—and countless other things besides these, and none of it is false.
8:296
曉得這些事,豈不遠勝於曉得那走失的驢已經找著了嗎?看哪,你得了那驢,看哪,你找著了;
Is it not far better to know these things than that the lost ass has been found? Behold, you have got the ass, behold, you have found it;
8:297
有什麼益處呢?你豈不是又要以別的方式失去牠麼?因為縱然牠不離開你,你到死的時候也要離棄牠;
what is the gain? Do you not again lose it in another way? For even if it does not leave you, you will leave it at your death;
8:298
but the things which I have spoken of, if we are willing to hold fast to them, we possess perpetually.
8:299
Let us therefore pursue those things, let us cleave to those things which abide, which are sure.
8:300
Let us not give heed to soothsayers, nor to dealers in oracles, nor to charlatans, but only to God, who knows all things clearly, who possesses the knowledge of all that is.
8:301
And thus shall we know all things, whatever we ought to know, and shall attain unto all good things.
