第四篇神學講辭,論子。我們既已藉著那靈的能力,把他們推理的曲折糾結為你充分地搖散,又已概括地消解了——而且照我所深信的,至少在較公正的人看來並不含糊——那些從神聖經文中引出的反對與駁難,就是那些盜竊字句、竊取經文意義之人,藉以擄掠眾人、攪擾真理之道的;
THE FOURTH THEOLOGICAL ORATION, ON THE SON. Since by the power of the Spirit we have sufficiently shaken loose for you the twists and tangles of their reasonings, and have now in summary dissolved — and, as I am persuaded, not obscurely, at least to the more fair-minded — the objections and counter-arguments drawn from the divine Scriptures, by which those who plunder the letter and steal the meaning of what is written carry off the multitude for themselves and trouble the way of truth;
4-1:2
我們既已把那些更崇高、更合乎神之尊嚴的話語歸於那神性,又把那些較卑微、較合乎人性的話語歸於那為我們、為我們的緣故、敵擋罪而受苦的新亞當——成為受苦之神的;
having assigned the higher and more God-befitting sayings to the Godhead, and the lowlier and more human ones to the New Adam, the God who suffered for us, for our sake, against sin;
4-1:3
yet we have not gone through them one by one, since the discourse was pressing on.
4-1:4
But since you also seek in brief the solutions of these, that you may not be swept away by persuasive-sounding words, we will sum up these as well, dividing them into numbers for the sake of easy remembering.
4-1:5
For there is that one passage of theirs, and a very ready one too:
4-1:6
The Lord created me as the beginning of His ways, for His works.
4-1:7
How shall we meet this? Shall we not bring a charge against Solomon? Shall we not reject his earlier writings because of his final fall? Shall we not say that the saying belongs to Wisdom herself — to that knowledge, as it were, and to the craftsman-reason, by which all things were framed? For Scripture knows well how to personify even lifeless things, as in:
4-1:8
海說了這話、那話;
The sea said this and that;
4-1:9
又說,深淵說,不在我裡面;
and, The deep said, It is not in me;
4-1:10
and, The heavens declare the glory of God.
4-1:11
And again a sword is bidden do something, and mountains and hills are asked the reason of their skipping.
4-1:12
We say none of these things, even though by some who lived before us it has been laid down as a strong argument.
4-1:13
But let the saying belong to the Saviour Himself, to the true Wisdom.
4-1:14
Let us consider the matter a little together.
4-1:15
What among existing things is without a cause? The Godhead.
4-1:16
因為沒有人能說出神的緣由;
For no one can name a cause of God;
4-1:17
else this would be older than God.
4-1:18
But what is the cause of the manhood, which God assumed for our sake? Surely it is our salvation.
4-1:19
For what else? Since, therefore, we here clearly find both "He created" and "He begets me," the explanation is simple.
4-1:20
凡我們所看見與緣由相連的,就讓我們歸於那人性;
Whatever we find joined with the cause, let us assign to the manhood;
4-1:21
but whatever is unconditioned and without cause, let us reckon to the Godhead.
4-1:22
Is not, then, "He created" spoken with the cause? For "He created me," it says, "the beginning of His ways, for His works."
4-1:23
And the works of His hands are truth and judgement, for the sake of which He was anointed with Godhead.
4-1:24
For this is the anointing of the manhood.
4-1:25
至於「祂生我」,卻是無因的;
But "He begets me" is without a cause;
4-1:26
or else show something appended to it.
4-1:27
What argument, then, will gainsay that Wisdom is called a creature in respect of the lower generation, but an offspring in respect of the first and more incomprehensible one? To this it follows also that He should be called a servant — one who serves many well — and that it should be a great thing for Him to be called a child of God.
4-1:28
For in very deed He served the flesh, and our birth, and our sufferings, for the sake of our freedom, and of all whom He saved that were held fast by sin.
4-1:29
And what is greater for man's lowliness than to be intertwined with God, and to become God by the union, and to be so visited by the Dayspring from on high that the holy thing born should be called the Son of the Most High, and that there should be given to Him the name which is above every name? And what is this but God? And that every knee should bow to Him who emptied Himself for us, and mingled the divine image with the form of a servant; and that all the house of Israel should know that God has made Him both Lord and Christ? For these things came to pass by the energy of the Begotten and the good pleasure of the Begetter.
4-1:30
And that He should have His seat at the right hand, until the subduing of His enemies.
4-1:31
And what is to be after this? To cease from His kingdom, or to be thrust out of the heavens? By whose stopping Him? Or for what cause? What a bold interpreter you are, and a great rebel against royalty!
4-1:32
And indeed you hear that of His kingdom there shall be no end.
4-1:33
But this you suffer through not knowing that "until" is not always set in opposition to the future, but lays down a limit up to a certain point, while it does not deny what is after that.
4-1:34
Or how will you understand — to say nothing of the rest — this:
4-1:35
I am with you, even unto the consummation of the age? Is it as though after this He would no longer be? And what is the sense of that? And not only this, but also through not distinguishing the things signified.
4-1:36
因為祂被稱為作王,在一種意義上乃是說祂是全能者,作那願意之人與不願意之人的王;
For He is said to reign in one sense as the Almighty, the King of both the willing and the unwilling;
4-1:37
but in another sense as working subjection, and placing us under His own kingdom, when we willingly accept being ruled.
4-1:38
Of the kingdom, then, understood in the former sense, there shall be no end.
4-1:39
But what of the second? Our being brought under His hand and saved.
4-1:40
因為對那些已經降服的人,何需再施行使其降服的作為呢?此後祂便起來審判全地,將得救的與滅亡的分開;
For what need is there to work subjection upon those already subjected? After which He rises up to judge the earth, and to separate the saved from the perishing;
4-1:41
after which God stands in the midst of gods — that is, of the saved — discerning and distinguishing of what honour and abode each is worthy.
4-1:42
To this join also the subjection by which you subject the Son to the Father.
4-1:43
What, do you say He is not now subjected? And does He, being God, at all need to be made subject to God? You make your argument as though about some robber or some adversary of God.
4-1:44
其實,正如那解除我咒詛的,為我的緣故被稱為咒詛;
But just as He who looses my curse was called a curse for my sake;
4-1:45
那除去世人之罪的,被稱為罪;
and He who takes away the sin of the world was called sin;
4-1:46
祂頂替那舊亞當,成了一個新的;
and instead of the old Adam He becomes a new one;
4-1:47
so also He makes my unsubjection His own, as the head of the whole body.
4-1:48
So long, then, as I am unsubjected and rebellious, both by denial of God and by my passions, Christ also, so far as concerns me, is called unsubjected.
4-1:49
But when all things shall be made subject to Him — and they shall be subjected by acknowledgement and transformation — then He too will have fulfilled the subjection, bringing me, who am saved, to God.
4-1:50
For this, according to my reasoning at least, is the subjection of Christ — the fulfilment of the Father's will.
4-1:51
其實,子使萬有降服於父,父也使萬有降服於子;
But the Son subjects all to the Father, and the Father to the Son;
4-1:52
the one by working, the other by good pleasure, as we said before.
4-1:53
And thus He who subjects presents to God that which is subjected, making our state His own.
4-1:54
Of such a kind, it seems to me, is also this:
4-1:55
My God, my God, attend to me; why hast Thou forsaken me? For He was not Himself forsaken, either by the Father or by His own Godhead, as some think — as though it feared the suffering, and on that account drew back from the Sufferer.
4-1:56
For who compelled Him either to be born below at the beginning, or to go up to the cross? But in Himself, as I said, He typifies our condition.
4-1:57
因為我們從前正是那被離棄、被忽視的,如今卻藉著那不能受苦者的諸般苦難被接納、被拯救;
For we were those formerly forsaken and overlooked, but now taken up and saved by the sufferings of Him who is impassible;
4-1:58
even as, making our folly and waywardness His own, He says what follows in the Psalm:
4-1:59
since the twenty-first Psalm refers manifestly to Christ.
4-1:60
And to the same contemplation belongs His learning obedience by the things which He suffered, and the crying, and the tears, and the supplication, and the being heard, and the reverence.
4-1:61
all of which are dramatized and wonderfully woven together for our sake.
4-1:62
因為就作為「道」而言,祂既非順從的,也非不順從的;
For as the Word He was neither obedient nor disobedient;
4-1:63
for these things belong to those under authority, and to subordinates — the one to the more fair-minded, the other to those deserving of punishment.
4-1:64
But as in the form of a servant, He condescends to His fellow-servants and to servants, and takes on Himself an alien form, bearing me wholly in Himself with all that is mine, that in Himself He may consume the worse, as fire consumes wax, or the sun the mist of the earth, and that I may partake of what is His through the commingling.
4-1:65
For this reason He honours obedience in deed, and makes trial of it by suffering.
4-1:66
For mere disposition is not sufficient — just as it is not for us — unless we also pass through the experiences themselves.
4-1:67
For deed is the proof of disposition.
4-1:68
He measures all by His own sufferings, by the art of His love for mankind, so that He who is His own may know our condition through His own — both how much is required of us, and how much is allowed us — His mind reckoning together with the suffering also the weakness.
4-1:69
For if the Light was persecuted because of the veil, shining in the darkness, in this life, by the other darkness — I mean by the evil one and the tempter — how great is the darkness, being weaker? And what wonder is it if, when He utterly escaped, we should be in some measure overtaken? For it was a greater thing for Him to be persecuted than for us to be overtaken, in the judgement of those who reason rightly about these things.
4-1:70
And to what has been said I will yet add this, calling to mind the saying:
4-1:71
For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to help those who are tempted — a saying which clearly bears upon the same thought.
4-1:72
並且在那復興的時候,神要在萬有之中作萬有;
And God shall be all in all at the time of the restoration;
4-1:73
not the Father, as though the Son were wholly resolved into Him, as a torch into a great pyre, withdrawn for a time and then rejoined — for let not the Sabellians be corrupted by this saying — but the whole God, when we shall no longer be many, as we now are by our movements and passions, bearing in our very selves nothing at all of God, or but little, but shall be wholly God-like, capable of containing the whole God, and Him alone.
4-1:74
因為這就是我們所急切奔向的那完全;
For this is the perfecting toward which we hasten;
4-1:75
and Paul himself bears witness to it especially.
4-1:76
For what he here says of God indefinitely, elsewhere he plainly limits to Christ.
4-1:77
他說的是什麼呢?「在這裡並不分希利尼人、猶太人、受割禮的、未受割禮的、化外人、西古提人、為奴的、自主的;
What does he say? Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bond, free;
4-1:78
but Christ is all, and in all.
4-1:79
那麼,若祂只被稱為更大的,卻不稱為同等的,這對他們或許還算有點根據;
If, then, He were called greater, but not equal, perhaps this would be something for them;
4-1:80
但我們既清楚找到這兩樣(既稱更大,又稱同等),這些「高貴」之輩還能說什麼呢?他們的有力之處在哪裡呢?那些無法調和的,怎能調和呢?因為同一位在同一方面,竟同時既大於、又等於同一位,這乃是不可能的事;
but if we plainly find both, what will these noble fellows say? What is their strong point? How shall things irreconcilable be reconciled? For that the same thing should be both greater than and equal to the same thing is among things impossible;
4-1:81
or is it not plain that the "greater" is in respect of the cause, but the "equal" in respect of the nature? And this we, of our great fair-mindedness, confess.
4-1:82
But perhaps some other might say, in contending with our argument, that it is no lesser thing to be from such a cause than to be uncaused.
4-1:83
因為祂既是出於那無始者,便要有分於那無始者的榮耀;
For He would share in the glory of the Unoriginate, because He is from the Unoriginate;
4-1:84
and there is added the generation — so great a thing, at least to those who have understanding, and so august.
4-1:85
For indeed to say that He is greater than what is conceived according to the manhood is true, but no great thing.
4-1:86
For what marvel is it if God is greater than man? Let this, then, be our word to those who boast of the "greater."
4-1:87
至於說「(祂的)神」,這話可以是說的——不是論到那「道」,乃是論到那看得見的(人性);
But "God" might be said — not of the Word, but of Him who is seen;
4-1:88
for how could there be a God of Him who is properly God? Just as also "Father" is said, not of the visible one, but of the Word.
4-1:89
so that the "properly" applies to both, but the "not properly" stands in the opposite way to how it does with us.
4-1:90
For of us He is properly God, but not properly Father.
4-1:91
And this is what produces the error among the heretics — the conjunction of the names, the names being interchanged because of the commingling.
4-1:92
But when the natures are distinguished, the names too are divided along with the conceptions.
4-1:93
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory...
4-1:94
the God of Christ, but the Father of glory.
4-1:95
for even if the two together are one, yet not in nature, but in the conjunction of these.
4-1:96
What could be plainer than this? Let it be alleged as a fifth point, His receiving life, or judgement, or the inheritance of the nations, or authority over all flesh, or glory, or disciples, or whatever is so spoken.
4-1:97
and this belongs to the manhood.
4-1:98
But even if you should ascribe it to the Godhead, it is not absurd.
4-1:99
For you will not give it as something acquired, but as co-existing from the beginning, and that by the principle of nature, not of grace.
4-1:100
Let it be set down as a sixth point, that the Son can do nothing of Himself, except what He sees the Father doing.
4-1:101
至於那些以同一方式所說的事,這裡的「能」或「不能」都不是那一類意思;
Of those things which are spoken in one and the same way, neither the "can" nor the "cannot" applies;
4-1:102
for it is not a lack of power, and at one time, and in respect of one thing — as that a child cannot wrestle, or a puppy see, or this one contend against that one.
4-1:103
For perhaps he will at some time wrestle, and will see, and will contend against this one, even if against another he is unable.
4-1:104
But there is the "cannot" in the sense of "for the most part," as in:
4-1:105
A city set upon a high hill cannot be hid.
4-1:106
for perhaps someone might even be hidden, when something greater stands in front of it.
4-1:107
The sons of the bridechamber cannot fast, so long as the bridegroom is present with them;
4-1:108
無論這新郎是指那肉身可見的(基督);
whether He be the one bodily seen;
4-1:109
因為祂寄居(同在)的時候,乃是歡樂的時候,不是受苦的時候;
for the time of His sojourn is a time not of affliction but of gladness;
4-1:110
or whether He be understood as the Word.
4-1:111
For why need those who are cleansed by reason fast bodily? But there is the "cannot" in the sense of "not willed," as that He could not do miracles there because of the unbelief of those who were to receive them.
4-1:112
For since both things are needful for the cures — both the faith of those being healed and the power of the healer — it could not be that one of the pair should be lacking.
4-1:113
And I know not whether this too should not be added to the reasonable sense:
4-1:114
for the cure of those who would be harmed by it through unbelief is not reasonable.
4-1:115
And of the same kind of saying is this also:
4-1:116
The world cannot hate you;
4-1:117
又如,「你們既是惡的,怎能說出好話來?」這些事中有哪一樣是真不可能的呢,豈不過是「不願意」罷了?在所說的話中,也有這樣一類,就是那按本性是不可能、但神若願意便是可能的,正如說同一個人不能第二次出生;
and, How can you, being evil, speak good things? For how is any of these impossible, except in that it is not willed? And there is also of such a kind among the things said, that which is impossible by nature, but possible to God if He wills it, as that the same person cannot be born a second time;
4-1:118
and a needle that does not admit a camel.
4-1:119
for what would hinder these from coming to pass, if God should will it? But apart from all these there is the wholly impossible and inadmissible, such as that which we are now examining.
4-1:120
因為正如我們說,神不可能是惡的,或不可能是不存在的;
For just as we say it is impossible for God to be evil, or not to be;
4-1:121
因為這倒要成為神無能的記號,而不是祂大能的記號;
for this would be a mark of God's powerlessness rather than of His power;
4-1:122
又如,那不存在的竟成為存在的,或二乘二竟同時等於四又等於十;
or that what is not should be, or that twice two should be both four and ten;
4-1:123
so it is impossible and unallowable for the Son to do anything which the Father does not do.
4-1:124
因為凡父所有的,都是子的;
For all things that the Father has are the Son's;
4-1:125
反過來,凡子所有的,也都是父的;
as conversely the Son's are the Father's;
4-1:126
nothing, therefore, is peculiar, because they are common.
4-1:127
Since even Being itself is common and of equal honour, although it is the Son's from the Father.
4-1:128
in accordance with which this also is said:
4-1:129
not as though His living and being were held together from thence, but as existing from thence timelessly and without cause.
4-1:130
But how does He see the Father doing, and so do likewise? Is it as those who paint forms and letters, because they cannot otherwise hit upon the truth, except by looking to the archetype and being guided thence? And how does Wisdom need a teacher, or fail to do anything unless taught? And how does the Father do, or has done? Did He first establish another world instead of the present one, and will He establish the one to come, and the Son, looking to those, established the one and will establish the other? There are, then, four worlds according to this argument — some the works of the Father, some of the Son.
4-1:131
但祂潔淨大痲瘋,趕逐鬼魔、治好疾病,使死人復活,行走在海面上,並作了祂所作的其餘一切事——父是在何時、何種場合下,先行作過這些事呢?豈不是顯然麼——乃是父刻印下同樣作為的範式,而那「道」則將它們完成——不是奴僕式地,也不是無知地,乃是有知識、有主權地,更貼切地說,乃是父式地?因為我是這樣領會這話的:凡父所作的事,子也照樣作;
But He cleanses leprosies, and frees from demons and diseases, and gives life to the dead, and walks upon the sea, and does all the other things which He has done — on what occasion, or when, did the Father do these beforehand? Or is it not plain that the Father impresses the patterns of the same works, while the Word brings them to accomplishment — not slavishly, nor unskilfully, but knowingly and with mastery, and, to speak more fittingly, in a fatherly way? For thus do I receive the saying that whatever the Father does, these the Son likewise does;
4-1:132
not according to a likeness of the things done, but according to an equality of authority.
4-1:133
這也就是「我父作事直到如今,我也作事」這話的意思;
And this would be the meaning of "My Father works until now, and I work";
4-1:134
不單如此,也包括對他們所造之物的料理與保守,正如那「祂以風為使者(使祂的使者成為靈)」一語所顯明的;
and not only this, but also the administration and preservation of the things they have made, as is shown by His making His angels spirits;
4-1:135
又如那「將地立在堅穩的根基上」所顯明的;
and by the earth being founded upon its sure foundation;
4-1:136
這些乃是一次就已穩固立定、被造成的;
things once firmly set and brought into being;
4-1:137
and by the thunder being made firm, and the wind being created — things of which the Word was the cause once for all, while the energy continues even now.
4-1:138
Let it be said as a seventh point that the Son came down from heaven, not that He might do His own will, but the will of Him who sent Him.
4-1:139
若是那已降下者(神性)說這些話,我們便要說,那「道」乃是從那(普通)人的立場形容著——不是從那被認為屬乎救主的人的立場,因為那人的意願絕不與神相違,乃是全然出於神——乃是從那與我們一樣的人的立場;
If it were He who had come down that said these things, we should have said that the Word is figuring forth from the standpoint of the man — not of the man conceived as belonging to the Saviour, for that man's willing is not at all contrary to God, being wholly from God — but from the standpoint of the man as we are;
4-1:140
inasmuch as the human will does not always follow the divine, but for the most part resists and struggles against it.
4-1:141
For indeed we have understood that saying also in this way:
4-1:142
Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me;
4-1:143
nevertheless not what I will, but let Thy will prevail.
4-1:144
For it is not likely either that He was ignorant whether it were possible or not, nor that He set His own will against the will.
4-1:145
But since the Word is here speaking from the standpoint of the assumed manhood — for this is what came down, not the thing assumed — we shall meet it thus.
4-1:146
並不是說子另有一個與父不同的、自己的意志,乃是說根本沒有這樣的意志,這話的意思乃是如此;
Not as though there were a will of the Son's own apart from the Father's, but as there being none, the meaning runs;
4-1:147
so that what is gathered may be of this sort:
4-1:148
Not that I may do my own will, for there is none of mine separate from Thine, but the will common to me and Thee — of whom, as the Godhead is one, so also is the will.
4-1:149
For many such sayings are spoken from the common standpoint, and not affirmatively but negatively, as in:
4-1:150
For God gives not the Spirit by measure;
4-1:151
因為既非(外加地)賜下,也非按量測度,因為神並不被神所量度;
for neither does He give, nor is it measured, for God is not measured out by God;
4-1:152
Neither is my sin, nor my transgression;
4-1:153
因為這話的意思不是說那罪是有的,乃是說那罪是沒有的;
for the meaning is not that it exists, but that it does not exist;
4-1:154
Not for the sake of our righteousnesses which we have done;
4-1:155
這在接下去的話中也是顯然的;
and this is plain even in what follows;
4-1:156
for what, He says, is the will of the Father? That everyone who believes in the Son should be saved, and attain the last resurrection.
4-1:157
Is this, then, the will of the Father, but in no way of the Son? Or does He preach the gospel and is believed in unwillingly? And who would believe this? Since the saying that the Word which is heard is not the Son's but the Father's has the same force.
4-1:158
因為那共有的怎能成為某一位獨有的,或單單屬於祂的呢?我無論怎樣思量,總想不通;
For how the common can be peculiar to anyone, or be his alone, this I cannot conceive, however much I consider it;
4-1:159
if you think thus concerning the willing, you will conceive rightly and very piously, as is my judgement and that of every fair-minded man.
4-1:160
That they may know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent;
4-1:161
None is good, save one, that is, God.
4-1:162
And this too seems to me to have an altogether very easy solution.
4-1:163
For if you set the "only true" upon the Father, where will you set Truth itself (the Son)? For if you understand "To the only wise God," or "Who only has immortality, dwelling in light unapproachable," or "To the King of the ages, incorruptible, invisible, and only wise God" in this way, the Son will be gone from you — condemned to death, or to darkness, or to not being wise, nor king, nor invisible, nor God at all, which is the sum of what has been said.
4-1:164
And how will He not lose, along with the other attributes, also goodness — or rather, that which belongs to God alone? But I think the saying:
4-1:165
That they may know Thee the only true God, is said for the doing away of those that are not really gods, but are so called.
4-1:166
And the saying "and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent" would be against us, if the "only true" were set in opposition to Him, and the word were not spoken concerning the Godhead held in common.
4-1:167
But the saying, None is good, has its answer to the tempting lawyer, who had testified goodness to Him as to a man.
4-1:168
For the supremely good, He says, belongs to God alone, even though a man also be so named, as in:
4-1:169
The good man out of the good treasure brings forth that which is good;
4-1:170
Do good, O Lord, to those who are good;
4-1:171
and whatever other such things are said concerning those things in us that are praised, upon whom the outflowing of the first Beautiful has come, even in a secondary sense.
4-1:172
那麼,我們若能在這事上說服你,那是最好的;
If, then, we persuade you of this, it is best;
4-1:173
but if not, what will you say to those who allege elsewhere, according to your own suppositions, that the Son alone is called God? In what words? In those:
4-1:174
「這是你的神,再沒有別的可與祂相比;
This is your God; no other shall be reckoned beside Him;
4-1:175
After this He appeared upon the earth, and dwelt among men.
4-1:176
因為這話不是論到父、乃是論到子說的,那(後面的)附加之語便清楚顯明了;
for that this is said not concerning the Father but the Son, the addition plainly makes clear;
4-1:177
for this is He who conversed with us bodily, and came to be among those below.
4-1:178
If this be said against the Father, as if to do away with the so-called gods, we shall have made the Father lesser by the very means by which we strove on behalf of the Son.
4-1:179
And what could be more wretched or more disastrous than such a victory? Ninthly, they will allege this:
4-1:180
Ever living to make intercession for us.
4-1:181
well and very mystically and lovingly toward mankind.
4-1:182
因為「代求」並不是像眾人習慣所想的那樣,含有尋求伸冤的意思;
for to intercede does not mean, as is the custom of the many, to seek vengeance;
4-1:183
因為那倒在某種意義上是卑微的記號;
for this would be in some way a mark of lowliness;
4-1:184
乃是說藉著祂中保的職分為我們代求;
but it means to plead on our behalf by the word of His mediation;
4-1:185
even as the Spirit also is said to intercede for us.
4-1:186
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
4-1:187
For He still pleads even now, as man, on behalf of my salvation, because He is with the body which He assumed, until He makes me God by the power of His incarnation, even though He is no longer known after the flesh — I mean the fleshly passions, which, apart from sin, are ours.
4-1:188
And thus we have as Advocate Jesus Christ — not as one who grovels before the Father on our behalf, and falls down slavishly.
4-1:189
Away with a suspicion that is truly slavish and unworthy of the Spirit!
4-1:190
因為向父求這事是不對的,叫子受這事也是不對的,這樣想神更是不對的;
For neither is it right to seek this of the Father, nor for the Son to suffer it, nor to think it concerning God;
4-1:191
but by the things which He suffered, as man, He persuades us to be patient, as the Word and Counsellor.
4-1:192
This is what the intercession means to me.
4-1:193
然而智慧怎能不知道任何存在之物呢——祂乃是諸世代的創造者、那成全者與更新者、一切受造之物的終極?祂知道神的事,如同人的靈知道自己裡面的事?還有什麼知識比這更完全呢?並且祂怎能準確知道那時辰之前的事、以及那彷彿緊貼著終結的事,卻單單不知道那時辰本身呢?這事好像一個謎,就如有人說,他準確知道牆前面的事,卻不知道那牆本身;
And yet how can Wisdom be ignorant of anything that exists — He who is the Maker of the ages, the Consummator and Transformer, the End of all created things? He who knows the things of God as the spirit of man knows the things in him? For what is more perfect than this knowledge? And how does He accurately know the things before the hour, and the things as it were close upon the end, yet is ignorant of the hour itself? For the thing is like a riddle, as if one should say that he accurately knows the things before the wall, but is ignorant of the wall itself;
4-1:194
又如,他清楚知道一日的終了,卻不知道那夜的起頭;
or, knowing well the end of the day, does not know the beginning of the night;
4-1:195
where the knowledge of the one necessarily brings in the other.
4-1:196
Or is it not plain to all that He knows as God, but says He is ignorant as man — if one separates the appearance from the thing conceived? For the fact that the title of "Son" is absolute and unrelated, no "whose" being attached to the Son, gives us this surmise, so that we may take the ignorance in the more reverent way, reckoning it to the human, not to the divine.
4-1:197
那麼,這論點若已足夠,我們就到此為止,不必再尋求別的了;
If, then, this argument is sufficient, here we shall stand, and let nothing further be sought;
4-1:198
but if not, at least, secondly, let the knowledge of the greatest things, like each of the other points, be referred to the cause, in honour of the Begetter.
4-1:199
But it seems to me that someone, even if he had not read it that way, like one of our own learned men, might reflect a little, that the Son does not know the day or the hour otherwise than because the Father does.
4-1:200
For what is the inference? Since the Father knows, on that account the Son also knows — as being plain that this is knowable and apprehensible to none, except to the first nature.
4-1:201
其餘留給我們處理的,乃是論到祂受了差遣、守了那些誡命、並常作那些討祂喜悅之事;
It remained for us to deal with His being commissioned, and having kept the commandments, and having always done the things that please Him;
4-1:202
再者,論到祂的得以完全、祂的被高舉、祂因所受的苦難學了順從、祂的大祭司職分與祭物、祂的被交付、祂向那能救祂免死者的禱告、祂的極度傷痛、祂的血滴、祂的禱告,以及若還有任何這一類的事;
and further, His perfecting, and His exaltation, and His learning obedience by the things which He suffered, and His high-priesthood and offering, and His being delivered up, and His prayer to Him who was able to save Him from death, and His agony, and His bloody sweat, and His prayer, and if there be any other such thing;
4-1:203
unless it were plain to all that such names belong to that which suffers, not to the immutable nature that is higher than suffering.
4-1:204
Concerning the objections, then, let so much be said, as being a sort of root and reminder for the more inquiring minds, with a view to a more perfect working-out.
4-1:205
the conceptions concerning Him being many — but to set forth what each one of them means, and to show the mystery of the names.
4-1:206
And this is shown not only by reasonings, but also by the wisest and most ancient of the Hebrews, as far as they have given us to conjecture.
4-1:207
For those who honoured the Divine with peculiar characters, and would not endure that anything which is after God, or is God, should be written with the same letters — judging it fitting that the Divine should be in this respect also uncommunicated to our own things — when would they ever have allowed the indissoluble and distinct Nature to be set forth by a dissoluble utterance? For neither did anyone ever breathe in the whole of the air, nor has any mind altogether contained, or any voice embraced, the substance of God.
4-1:208
But from the things around Him we sketch out the things concerning Him, and gather together some dim and feeble and varied notion, one from one source, another from another.
4-1:209
And this is the best theologian among us — not he who has found the whole (for our bondage does not admit of the whole), but he who imagines more than another, and gathers together in himself more of the likeness or shadow of the truth, or whatever we shall call it.
4-1:210
那麼,就我們所能及的而論,「那自有者」與「神」這兩個名稱,在某種程度上更是那本質的名稱;
So far, then, as is within our reach, "He who is" and "God" are in some way more the names of the Substance;
4-1:211
這不單是因為祂在山上對摩西說話、被問及祂的名(無論那名是什麼)時,便以此自稱:「那自有者差我來」,吩咐摩西這樣告訴百姓;
not only because, when He spoke to Moses on the mountain and was asked His name, whatever it might be, He gave Himself this title, "He who is has sent me," bidding him say so to the people;
4-1:212
but also because we find this title the more proper.
4-1:213
因為「神」這名,雖然照那些精於此道的人所考究的字源,是出於「奔跑」或「焚燒」,因祂對那些敗壞的習性有永不止息的運行與焚燒之性——因此祂被稱為烈火——然而這名仍是屬於那相關性的稱呼,不是絕對的;
For the name "God," even though, as those skilled in these things have etymologized, it is derived from "running" or "burning," because of the ever-moving and consuming nature with regard to evil dispositions — for hence He is called a consuming fire — yet it belongs to the relative terms, and is not absolute;
4-1:214
正如「主」這名,這名本身也被說是神的名;
just as also the name "Lord," which is itself also said to be a name of God;
4-1:215
For I, He says, am the Lord thy God;
4-1:216
但我們所尋求的,乃是那其存在是自存、不與別物相繫的本性;
but we seek the nature whose being is self-existent, and not bound up with another;
4-1:217
and Being is the very own of God, and the whole of it, neither bounded nor cut off by what was before Him or after Him, for He was not, nor will be.
4-1:218
在其餘的稱號中,有些明顯是論到那權能的,有些是論到那經綸的,而那經綸又分兩類;
Of the other appellations, some are plainly of authority, others of the economy, and that of two kinds;
4-1:219
一類是在那身體之上(成肉身之前)的,另一類是在那身體之內(成肉身之後)的;
the one above the body, the other in the body;
4-1:220
例如,全能者,並君王——或榮耀的、或諸世代的、或諸能力的、或那蒙愛者的、或那些作王者的君王;
for instance, the Almighty, and the King — whether of glory, or of the ages, or of the powers, or of the Beloved, or of those who reign;
4-1:221
and the Lord — whether of Sabaoth, which means of hosts, or of the powers, or of those who exercise lordship.
4-1:222
那麼,這些顯然都是論到那權能的;
These, then, are plainly of authority;
4-1:223
至於「神」,則或是論到那拯救的、或那刑罰的、或那平安的、或那公義的、或那亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各的神、並一切屬靈、看見神之以色列的神;
but "God" is either of salvation, or of vengeances, or of peace, or of righteousness, or of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and of all spiritual Israel that sees God;
4-1:224
因為我們既被這三樣所管轄——就是對刑罰的懼怕、對拯救的盼望、此外還有那榮耀、並那產生這些之眾美德的操練;
for since we are governed by these three — by fear of punishment, by hope of salvation, and besides by glory, and by the practice of the virtues from which these come;
4-1:225
「刑罰之神」這名乃是用以料理那懼怕;
the name "of vengeances" administers the fear;
4-1:226
「拯救之神」那名,乃是用以料理那盼望;
that "of salvation," the hope;
4-1:227
「眾德之神」那名,乃是用以料理那操練;
that "of the virtues," the practice;
4-1:228
so that he who succeeds in any of these, bearing God in himself as it were, may press on the more toward perfection and toward the kinship that comes of the virtues.
4-1:229
These, then, are the names common to the Godhead.
4-1:230
至於那無始者所獨有的,乃是「父」;
But peculiar to the Unoriginate is "Father";
4-1:231
那無始而生者所獨有的,乃是「子」;
to Him who is begotten without beginning, "Son";
4-1:232
to Him who came forth, or proceeds, without being begotten, the Holy Spirit.
4-1:233
But let us come to the titles of the Son, which is what the discourse set out to speak of.
4-1:234
He is called Only-begotten, not because He is the only one from the only one and only one, but because He is so in a unique manner, not as bodies are.
4-1:235
又稱為「道」,因為祂與父的關係,正如言語之於心思;
And Word, because He is related to the Father as a word is to a mind;
4-1:236
not only because of the passionlessness of His generation, but also because of His conjunction, and His declaratory function.
4-1:237
And perhaps someone might say that He is so called as a definition is to the thing defined, since this also is called "logos" (definition).
4-1:238
因為祂說,那領會子的——這就是「看見」的意思——便領會了父;
For he who has comprehended the Son — for this is what "has seen" means — has comprehended the Father, He says;
4-1:239
for every offspring is a silent word of the one who begot it.
4-1:240
And if anyone should say that He is so called because He is present in all existing things, he will not miss the mark of the meaning.
4-1:241
For what is there that has not been held together by reason? And He is Wisdom, as the knowledge of things divine and human.
4-1:242
For how could He who made them be ignorant of the reasons of the things which He has made? And He is Power, as the preserver of created things, and the one who supplies the power for these to be held together.
4-1:243
祂又是「真理」,因為就本性而言,祂是一,不是多;
And He is Truth, as being one, not many, in nature;
4-1:244
因為那真的是一,那假的卻是多歧的;
for the true is one, but the false is manifold;
4-1:245
and as the pure seal of the Father, and His most unerring impress.
4-1:246
And He is Image, as being of one substance, and because this (the Son) is from that (the Father), but the Father is not from this.
4-1:247
因為這就是像的性質,乃是那原型、那它所題名者的摹本;
For this is the nature of an image, to be a copy of the archetype, and of that whose name it bears;
4-1:248
save that here there is something more.
4-1:249
因為在那邊(普通的像),乃是不動的像,摹自一個會動的原型;
For there the image is motionless, of one that moves;
4-1:250
but here it is the living image of the Living One, and having more of unalterableness than Seth had of Adam, or any offspring of its begetter.
4-1:251
For such is the nature of simple beings, that they do not resemble in one respect and differ in another, but the whole is the impress of the whole, and rather the same than a mere likeness.
4-1:252
And He is Light, as the brightness of souls cleansed both by reason and by life.
4-1:253
For if ignorance and sin are darkness, then knowledge and the godly life would be light.
4-1:254
And He is Life, because He is Light, and the foundation and substantiation of every rational nature.
4-1:255
For in Him we live, and move, and have our being, according to the double power of the inbreathing — both being breathed into thence as breath, all of us, and as Holy Spirit so many as are capable, and that to the degree that we open the mouth of the mind.
4-1:256
And He is Righteousness, because He apportions according to worth, and judges justly between those under the law and those under grace, between soul and body, so that the one should rule and the other be ruled, and the better should hold the lordship over the worse, so that the worse should not rise up against the better.
4-1:257
And He is Sanctification, as being purity, that the pure might be contained by purity.
4-1:258
And He is Redemption, as setting us free who were held under sin, and giving Himself as a ransom for us, a purifying sacrifice for the world.
4-1:259
And He is Resurrection, as raising us up from hence, and bringing back to life those who were deadened by sin.
4-1:260
These, then, are still common to Him who is above us and to Him who is for our sake.
4-1:261
But those which are peculiarly ours, and belong to the manhood He there assumed, are these:
4-1:262
祂是「人」,不單是為叫祂能藉著一個身體被眾身體所容(因祂的本性本不可測度,本不能被容);
He is Man, not only that He might be contained by bodies through a body, who otherwise could not be contained because of the incomprehensibility of His nature;
4-1:263
也是為叫祂藉著自己使人成聖,彷彿成了全團的酵,又把那被定罪的全人聯於自己,便消解全人的定罪,為著一切的人,成了我們所是的一切,惟獨沒有罪——就是身體、魂、心思,凡死所滲透的一切;
but also that through Himself He might sanctify man, becoming as it were a leaven to the whole lump, and, having united to Himself the whole that was condemned, might dissolve the condemnation of the whole, becoming all things for all that we are, except sin — body, soul, mind, all that death pervades;
4-1:264
the common term from these is "Man" — God seen, because of that which is conceived (the Godhead).
4-1:265
祂又是「人子」,既是因著亞當,也是因著那童女,祂乃是由他們而生的;
And He is Son of Man, both because of Adam and because of the Virgin, from whom He came;
4-1:266
of the one as forefather, of the other as mother, by the law and yet not by the law of generation.
4-1:267
祂又是「基督」,是因著那神性;
And He is Christ, because of the Godhead;
4-1:268
因為這乃是那人性所受的膏抹,並不是像其他「受膏者」那樣藉著一種運行使人成聖,乃是藉著那施膏者全然的同在;
for this is the anointing of the manhood, sanctifying not by an energy as in the case of the other christs (anointed ones), but by the presence of the whole Anointer;
4-1:269
whose effect is that the Anointing should be called Man, and that which is anointed should be made God.
4-1:270
And He is the Way, as leading us through Himself.
4-1:271
祂又是「牧者」,因祂使我們躺臥在青草地上,在可安歇的水邊牧養我們,從那裡引導我們,並為我們爭戰,抵擋那些野獸;
And He is the Shepherd, as making us to lie down in a place of green pasture, and nourishing us beside the water of rest, and leading us thence, and warring on our behalf against the wild beasts;
4-1:272
turning back the wandering, bringing home the lost, binding up the broken, guarding the strong, and gathering them to the fold above by the words of pastoral skill.
4-1:273
And He is High Priest, as the one who brings us near (to God).
4-1:274
麥基洗德也是如此:就那超越我們的而言,祂是「無母的」;就那合乎我們的而言,祂是「無父的」;
Melchizedek again: as 'without mother' in respect of what is above us, and 'without father' in respect of what is according to us;
4-1:275
就那在上的境界而言,祂是「無族譜的」;
and as 'without genealogy' in respect of the realm above;
4-1:276
for 'Who shall declare his generation?' it says. And He is King of Salem—which means Peace—and King of righteousness, and One who receives tithes from patriarchs who prevailed in valour against the powers of evil.
4-1:277
You have the titles of the Son.
4-1:278
你當遍歷這些稱號——凡是崇高的,就以合乎神的方式去領會;凡是屬肉身的,就以同情體恤的心去領會;
Walk through them—those that are lofty, in a manner befitting God; and those that are bodily, with compassion;
4-1:279
for our sake He came down from on high.
4-1:280
Above all, and before all, keep this in mind, and you will not stumble over either the loftier or the lowlier names:
4-1:281
Jesus Christ, the same yesterday and today in His bodily nature, the same spiritually, and unto the ages of ages.
