1-4:praef.1
Ignatius, also called Theophorus, to the church that has obtained mercy in the majesty of the Father Most High and of Jesus Christ his only Son; beloved and enlightened by the will of him who willed all things that exist, according to the love of Jesus Christ our God; which also presides in the region of the Romans, worthy of God, worthy of honour, worthy of all blessing, worthy of praise, worthy of success, worthy in purity, and presiding in love, bearing the name of Christ and the name of the Father; which I also greet in the name of Jesus Christ, Son of the Father— to those united in flesh and spirit to every commandment of his, filled with the grace of God without wavering and filtered clean from every foreign stain, abundant and blameless greetings in Jesus Christ our God.
1-4:1.1
Since by prayer to God I have succeeded in seeing your God-worthy faces, as indeed I asked to receive even more— for bound in Christ Jesus I hope to greet you, if it be the will that I be counted worthy to reach the end—
1-4:1.2
For the beginning is well-managed, if indeed I obtain the grace to receive my lot unhindered. For I fear your love, lest it wrong me. For it is easy for you to do what you wish, but it is hard for me to attain to God, if you do not spare me.
1-4:2.1
For I do not want you to please men, but to please God, as indeed you do please him. For neither shall I ever have such an opportunity to attain to God, nor can you, if you keep silent, be credited with a better work. For if you keep silent concerning me, I shall be a word of God; but if you love my flesh, I shall again be only a voice.
1-4:2.2
Grant me nothing more than to be poured out as a libation to God, while there is still an altar ready, so that, becoming a chorus in love, you may sing to the Father in Christ Jesus, because God has counted the bishop of Syria worthy to be found at the setting, having summoned him from the rising. It is good to set from the world unto God, that I may rise unto him.
1-4:3.1
You never envied anyone; you taught others. And I want those things also to be confirmed which you command as teachers.
1-4:3.2
Only ask power for me, both within and without, that I may not only speak but also will it; that I may not only be called a Christian but also be found one. For if I am found one, I can also be called one, and then be faithful, when I no longer appear to the world.
1-4:3.3
Nothing visible is good; for our God, Jesus Christ, being in the Father, is the more manifest. Christianity is not the work of persuasion, but of greatness, when it is hated by the world.
1-4:4.1
I write to all the churches, and I charge all, that I willingly die for God, if only you do not hinder me. I beseech you, do not become an untimely kindness to me. Let me be food for the wild beasts, through which I can attain to God. I am God's wheat, and I am ground by the teeth of wild beasts, that I may be found pure bread of Christ.
1-4:4.2
Rather coax the wild beasts, that they may become my tomb and leave nothing of my body, so that when I have fallen asleep I may be a burden to no one. Then I shall truly be a disciple of Jesus Christ, when the world no longer sees even my body. Entreat Christ on my behalf, that through these instruments I may be found a sacrifice.
1-4:4.3
I do not command you as did Peter and Paul. They were apostles; I am a condemned man. They were free; I am even now a slave. But if I suffer, I shall become a freedman of Jesus Christ, and shall rise free in him. Now, bound, I learn to desire nothing.
1-4:5.1
From Syria as far as Rome I fight with wild beasts, by land and sea, night and day, bound to ten leopards— that is, a detachment of soldiers— who become worse even when treated kindly. But by their wrongdoings I am the more discipled; yet I am not thereby justified.
1-4:5.2
May I have joy of the wild beasts prepared for me; and I pray that they be found prompt for me. I will even coax them to devour me quickly, not as with some, whom out of fear they did not touch. And even if they are unwilling and refuse, I will force them.
1-4:5.3
Bear with me: I know what is profitable for me. Now I begin to be a disciple. Let nothing of things visible or invisible envy me my attaining to Jesus Christ. Let fire and cross and packs of wild beasts, cuttings and manglings, scatterings of bones, hacking of limbs, grindings of the whole body, the evil torments of the devil, come upon me, only that I may attain to Jesus Christ.
1-4:6.1
The ends of the world will profit me nothing, nor the kingdoms of this age. It is good for me to die into Christ Jesus rather than to reign over the ends of the earth. Him I seek, who died for us; him I desire, who rose again for us. My birth-pangs are upon me.
1-4:6.2
Bear with me, brothers: do not hinder me from living, do not wish me to die. Do not give to the world the one who wills to be God's, nor deceive him with matter. Allow me to receive pure light; arriving there I shall be a man.
1-4:6.3
Permit me to be an imitator of the passion of my God. If anyone has him within himself, let him understand what I wish, and let him sympathize with me, knowing the things that constrain me.
1-4:7.1
The ruler of this age wishes to seize me and to corrupt my mind set toward God. Let none of you who are present help him; rather become mine, that is, God's. Do not speak of Jesus Christ while desiring the world.
1-4:7.2
Let no envy dwell among you. Even if I myself, when present, beseech you, do not obey me; rather obey these things which I write to you. For I write to you while living, longing to die. My love has been crucified, and there is in me no fire that loves matter; but living water, speaking within me, says to me from within: 'Come to the Father.'
1-4:7.3
I take no pleasure in corruptible food nor in the pleasures of this life. I desire the bread of God, which is the flesh of Jesus Christ, who is of the seed of David; and for drink I desire his blood, which is incorruptible love.
1-4:8.1
I no longer wish to live according to men. And this shall be, if you so will. Will it, that you also may be willed.
1-4:8.2
By a few letters I ask you: believe me. And Jesus Christ will make these things plain to you, that I speak truly— he the mouth that does not lie, in which the Father has truly spoken.
1-4:8.3
Pray for me, that I may attain. I have written to you not according to the flesh, but according to the mind of God. If I suffer, you have willed it; if I am rejected, you have hated me.
1-4:9.1
Remember in your prayer the church in Syria, which now has God as shepherd in my place. Jesus Christ alone will oversee it as bishop— he and your love.
1-4:9.2
But I am ashamed to be called one of them; for I am not worthy, being the least of them and as one untimely born. But I have obtained mercy to be someone, if I attain to God.
1-4:9.3
My spirit greets you, and the love of the churches that received me in the name of Jesus Christ, not as one merely passing through. For even those churches that did not lie on my route according to the flesh went before me from city to city.
1-4:10.1
I write these things to you from Smyrna by the hand of the Ephesians, worthy of all blessing. And there is with me, together with many others, also Crocus, the name dear to me.
1-4:10.2
Concerning those who went before me from Syria to Rome for the glory of God, I believe you have come to know them; make known to them that I am near. For they are all worthy of God and of you; it is fitting for you to refresh them in every way.
1-4:10.3
I have written these things to you on the ninth day before the Kalends of September. Farewell unto the end, in the endurance of Jesus Christ.
