For he who defines understanding as consisting solely in the bare utterance of the divine words resembles a parrot, which imitates human speech.
1:2361
因為在飛禽之中,惟獨這種動物,經過教導後便能仿效人的言語,雖然牠的本性中絲毫沒有人性;
For this creature alone among the birds, once taught, feigns human speech, though possessing nothing whatsoever human by nature;
1:2362
正如那僅止於單純發聲的人,模仿真正有悟性者的言語,以使聽者驚異,卻沒有藉德行實踐所塑成的知識習性,他實質上,以及在稱謂上,不過是另一個法利賽人,或是一位應受責備的祭司;
just as also the one who, confining himself to mere bare utterance, imitates the words of those truly possessed of understanding, in order to astonish his hearers, but does not have the habit of knowledge formed by the practice of the virtues, truly is — and is called — some other Pharisee, or a blameworthy priest;
1:2363
僅以言語的發聲來假裝有悟性;
feigning understanding by the mere utterance of words alone;
1:2364
卻完全欠缺那真正以行為為本質的智慧;
while falling completely short of that wisdom which truly has its being in works;
1:2365
因此便大大自負,並因那滋養其心中驕傲的自負自大,起來抵擋真理的道;
and therefore greatly puffed up, and, through the arrogance of a self-conceit that nurtures pride within his mind, setting himself against the word of truth;
1:2366
他似乎不知道,那些因擁有神學知識而出於愛慕虛榮之故大為自負之人,他們那離開實踐的知識,顯然正是魔鬼的神學;
not knowing, as it seems, that knowledge of God apart from practice — possessed by those who, because of it, are greatly puffed up through love of vainglory — is manifestly established as the theology of demons;
1:2367
having Jesus expressly rebuking it — him who is, as it were, the subject of that theologizing — even though such a person, held fast by the passion, does not perceive it.
1:2368
我們也不要僅以外顯的性格舉止,來限定神聖敬畏的莊嚴威榮;
Nor let us circumscribe the majesty of divine fear by mere outward manners of character alone;
1:2369
而應使關乎品格的端莊自持,成為靈魂內在美好性向的宣告者,好叫我們得以逃避那將臨的烈火之威嚇;
but let us make the composure of our character a herald of the good disposition within the soul, so that we may flee the coming threat of fire;
1:2370
並當以遵行誡命的實踐來妝點美好的悟性,免得我們如虛榮之人一般,徒然攜帶著死的言語,喪失了因遵行誡命而有的生命;
and let us adorn good understanding with the practice of the commandments, lest, like the vainglorious, we go about carrying dead words, deprived of the life that comes through the practice of the commandments;
1:2371
反倒要使神聖的言語見諸行實,與眾人一同追求和平與愛;
but let us make the divine words effective in deed, pursuing peace with all, and love;
1:2372
殷勤修習良善與溫柔,以及恆忍,並在凡事上對眾人的寬容;
cultivating kindness and gentleness, and long-suffering, and forbearance toward all in everything;
1:2373
以忍耐和感恩承受一切所遭遇的事;
bearing with patience and thanksgiving whatever befalls us;
1:2374
並將患難視為神聖的定旨,毫不動搖地領受;
and accepting afflictions unshaken, as divine decrees;
1:2375
opposing in nothing the purposes of providence, which through these things beneficially guides our life, so that we may attain eternal life together with all the saints, delighting in the good things to come, in the abiding permanence of eternal blessedness, as we hearken to God speaking to us:
1:2376
and let us rejoice, enjoying those ineffable good things: "which eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has entered into the heart of man, which God has prepared for those who love Him."
1:2377
21. By the same author, to the most holy bishop of Cydonia.
1:2378
我這位蒙神庇佑的主上,藉著虔敬探究那有關我們的、屬神的救世經綸之奧秘,已認識到神在高處與深處都與自身相等,並且驚歎那有限與無限——彼此相反且不相混合之物——如何環繞著神相結合,竟藉著彼此而得以顯明;
My God-protected lord, having discerned, through pious inquiry into the mystery of His dispensation concerning us, that God is equal to Himself in height and in depth, and having marveled how the finite, joined together with the infinite around Him — opposite and unmixed things — came to manifestation through one another;
1:2379
一方面,無限以不可言喻的方式與有限共同被劃定界限;
the infinite being ineffably conjoined in boundary with the finite;
1:2380
and the finite being, in a manner beyond nature, spread out together with the infinite.
1:2381
But he himself, concerning whom these things are said, being in both respects identical with himself, having yielded nothing whatsoever of himself with regard to the infinite — inasmuch as, according to nature, he is beyond the indefinite, yet according to the economy is both incomprehensible in being and known —
1:2382
having the height of divine glory beyond conception, and the depth of the economic condescension beyond comprehension, he prudently and pliably subjected himself to God, after the manner of wax to a seal; and having received him imprinted wholly unto the depth, he rendered himself a most conspicuous imitation of the divine blessedness.
1:2383
For, having wisely transformed himself according to divine ways,
1:2384
他藉著德行,將其品位的崇高調和於本性的卑微之中;
to the lowliness of his nature he tempered, through virtue, the loftiness of his rank;
1:2385
反過來,他又藉著知識,將本性的卑微一同提升至品位的崇高;
and conversely, to the loftiness of his rank, through knowledge, he raised up together the lowliness of his nature;
1:2386
and caused the one to be beheld, paradoxically, in the other.
1:2387
因為在兩方面他都與自己相同,兩者之中他都毫無減損其莊嚴,如此保全了自己;
For, being in both respects identical with himself, having yielded nothing of his dignity in either, he preserved himself unchanged;
1:2388
showing most clearly the means by which he acquired an unadulterated imitation of God, inasmuch as God, having ordained the priesthood on earth in his own stead, put him forward for this office.
1:2389
so that, being seen also in bodily form, his mysteries might not cease to appear to those capable of seeing them.
1:2390
For just as the Lord exhorted men to be reconciled to God the Father — treating them rather as those who had been led astray than as those who had sinned — even as the divinely inspired Paul testifies, saying, "We are ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as though God were exhorting through us,"
1:2391
好叫他能藉著恩惠之浩大,使人因羞愧而醒悟,認識自己心中的剛硬;
so that, by the greatness of his benefaction, he might, through shame, bring them to a recognition of their own hardness of heart;
1:2392
so too my lord and master, through voluntary condescension, having skillfully won me over, wished to seem to learn from me, by letter, the very things which, on account of his rank, he has been set forward to teach — and thereby, even if only belatedly, made me aware of my own ignorance.
1:2393
因此我向我的主上承認我的感激;
I acknowledge, then, my gratitude to my lord;
1:2394
並且我因他以何等方式輕柔地驅散了我自負的雲霧而引以為榮;
and I take pride in the manner by which he gently dispelled the cloud of my self-conceit;
1:2395
and I ask him not to cease guiding his servant with such words and such ways.
1:2396
XXII. By the same author, to Auxentius.
1:2397
若你們是因信賴聖神,因你們自身擁有那不可解脫地環繞著你們、不需任何更新的愛,而決意疏於給朋友寫信,那麼我既讚許這個道理,也接納你們;
If, trusting in the Spirit, inasmuch as you possess love indissolubly encompassing you, needing nothing for renewal, you have resolved to neglect writing letters to friends, then I both commend the reasoning and accept it from you;
1:2398
entrusting to that Spirit the treasure of love, from which and into which it is by nature disposed both to originate and to find its rest.
1:2399
但若你們是輕忽了合宜的友愛方式,因怠惰而推辭不寫,那麼我將不會停止做相反的事;
But if, disregarding the manner befitting friendship, you decline to write out of indolence, I shall not cease doing the contrary;
1:2400
for I do not know how to feel deference toward friends on account of the greatness of worldly eminence.
1:2401
但若這兩個不寫信的理由都不成立,那麼就請你們——儘管我們彼此不在場——接受,並且如同本性所教導的那樣,樂意地將透過書信達成的交談,給予那不在場的人;
But if neither of these two reasons for not writing applies, then receive from us, though absent, and grant readily to those who are absent, as nature has taught, the converse effected through letters;
1:2402
or rather, as God, having endowed nature with wisdom, has provided as a consolation.
1:2403
因為藉文字成形的言語,會刺激靜止的記憶,並喚醒昏沉的記憶,使人得以看見並重現所愛之人的容顏;
For a word given form in letters goads the memory when it is at rest, and rouses it when it drowses, toward seeing and reproducing the faces of those beloved;
1:2404
through which longing, like a fire that has been quenched, is once more rekindled from a small spark.
1:2405
XXIII. By the same author, to Stephen the presbyter.
1:2406
屬靈之愛的特性,不僅在於惠及在場而有所需求的人,也在於安慰不在場的人;
It is a property of spiritual love not only to benefit those in need who are present, but also to console those who are absent;
1:2407
並且不容許靈魂隨肉身一同被割裂;
and not to permit souls to be divided along with bodies;
1:2408
也不容許靈魂藉以承載造物主肖像的那理性之能力,被地域所限定;
nor indeed to permit the power of the reason, whereby the soul bears the image of the Creator, to be circumscribed by place;
1:2409
but rather, when present, to converse fittingly with the beloved by voice, face to face, or, when absent, to hold converse through letters.
1:2410
For nature, by the grace of God, wisely devised this manner for the undivided union of those who are, in body, greatly separated from one another by spatial distance.
1:2411
因為言語藉著聲音與文字經常迴響,如此便在靈魂中植下難以磨滅的記憶,使人得以持續看見那些因著愛而始終在靈裡同在的人;
For thus the word, resounding frequently both in speech and in writing, implants in the soul a memory not easily effaced, enabling one continually to behold those who, through love, are ever present in spirit;
1:2412
and to embrace them, and to be recalled from every sorrow.
1:2413
尊敬的諸位教父啊,求你們不要忘記我這作你們兒子與門徒的人,而是既作愛的門徒又作愛的師傅,以德行的話語餵養我饑渴的靈魂;
Do not, then, forget me, your child and disciple, honored Fathers, but, being both disciples and teachers of love, nourish with the word of the virtues my famished soul;
1:2414
並光照我那被無知的幽暗所壓迫的心靈,仰望為此存留在天上要賜給你們的賞報;
and illumine my mind, weighed down by the darkness of ignorance, looking to the reward laid up for you in the heavens for this;
1:2415
even if this act should, perhaps, for a little while draw you away from a better and more honorable occupation.
1:2416
For I know that it is not of equal repute to converse with God immediately, and to provide compassionately for those who are lesser.
1:2417
Yet neither is this estranged from what is accounted fitting by God.
1:2418
By the same author, to Constantine the sakellarios.
1:2419
There arrived the precious letter of my God-guarded lord, bringing peace, and appearing to bear him wholly in its very manner.
1:2420
For in the dignity of the words, the disposition of the soul, together with the gentleness of one's character, is by nature somehow made manifest.
1:2421
我因此歡欣,彷彿親自迎接了在場的我主一般,我在靈裡擁抱了他,並將他全然包容於我心的容量之中,安置於其中;
And I rejoiced, as though I had received my lord himself present, and I embraced him in spirit, and, having enfolded him wholly within the compass of my heart, I laid him up there;
1:2422
我也榮耀了我們的天主基督,是祂明智地將愛的律法植入人心;
and I glorified Christ our God, who wisely implanted in men the law of love;
1:2423
according to which those who know how to cultivate rightly the seeds of love can never be absent from one another, even though they be separated from one another, in body, by a great spatial distance.
1:2424
但既然這封信帶來了世俗和平的喜訊,將靈魂的憂愁轉化為喜樂;
But since the letter, bringing tidings of worldly peace, transformed the soul's grief into joy;
1:2425
it is necessary that we, as is fitting, become altogether grateful to God who granted it, lest we appear ungrateful for this benefaction, having repaid the benefactor ill.
1:2426
我們若能恰當地善用此平安,摒棄那本不該存在於我們心中、與世界及世界的掌權者所結的情誼,並且——縱使遲了些——終止那藉諸情慾對抗天主而構成的戰爭,我們便會全然懷有感恩之心;
We shall become altogether grateful if we make right use of this peace, setting aside the friendship toward the world and the ruler of this world that had wrongly existed within us, and, even if only belatedly, bringing to an end the war against God that is constituted through the passions;
1:2427
and having made indissoluble treaties of peace toward him, let us, in the abolition of the body, cease from enmity toward him.
1:2428
For it is impossible for us to be made friends with God while, through the passions, we rise up against him, and while we tolerate paying tribute, through wickedness, to the evil tyrant and murderer of souls, the devil — unless we have first been made wholly at war with the evil one.
1:2429
因為在那之前,我們始終是天主的仇敵與敵對者,縱使我們給自己冠上信徒之名,只要我們仍願意被卑賤的情慾所奴役;
For until then we remain enemies and foes of God, even if we affix to ourselves the name of the faithful, for as long as we choose to be enslaved to passions of dishonor;
1:2430
...being so disposed, and rising up against her own Maker, and unwilling to come under his kingdom—
1:2431
still sold to countless harsh masters, who urgently drive her toward wickedness, and deceitfully prepare her to choose the path that leads to destruction rather than the one that saves.
1:2432
但當我們從情慾的醉態中清醒過來,起來對抗魔鬼那邪惡而僭暴的國度,並從自己身上甩脫祂那最苦澀的軛;
But when we become sober from the drunkenness of the passions, and rise up against the evil and tyrannical kingdom of the devil, and shake off from ourselves his most bitter yoke;
1:2433
且看清與牠(魔鬼)為友曾如何深深地敗壞了我們;
and perceive how greatly friendship toward him had corrupted us;
1:2434
那時我們便要迎接基督——那和平、溫良的君王——不可見地臨於我們身上的平安同在;
then we shall receive the peaceful presence of Christ, the peaceable and meek king, coming invisibly upon us;
1:2435
且我們將甘願歸於祂的軛下,任憑祂以真理的律法規範並調教我們;
and we shall bear to come under his yoke, as he orders and disciplines us by the laws of truth;
1:2436
and we shall gladly accept to enter into friendship with him, willingly bringing him tributes and dues — namely, the fruits of righteousness brought to completion in us, through the virtues, in accordance with the commandment.
1:2437
With these, he who alone is without need, rejoicing for the sake of our salvation, may, as one who cannot lie, grant us all that he has promised us —
1:2438
And these are: "What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered into the heart of man — the things which God has prepared for those who love him."
1:2439
因為祂正是為此造了我們,好叫我們成為神聖本性的分享者,也成為祂永恆性的參與者;
For unto this he has made us, that we might become partakers of the divine nature, and sharers of his eternity;
1:2440
且使我們按照由恩寵而來的神化,顯得與祂相似;
and that we might appear like him according to the deification that comes by grace;
1:2441
for the sake of which exists the entire constitution and continuance of beings, and the production and coming-to-be of beings.
1:2442
Let us, then, become worthy of peace, my blessed lord, having manfully cut away from ourselves the passions in us that rebel against God.
1:2443
Let us mortify, as far as possible, the body, through whose vigor the devil's entrance to the soul comes about.
1:2444
By divine readings let us halt the wandering mind, and lead it back again to God.
1:2445
By the exertions of self-control and vigilance, let us prudently restrain desire, which by its craving is borne disorderly toward many things.
1:2446
By prayers and supplications and almsgiving, let us wisely lull to rest the temper that seethes and is troubled.
1:2447
By the fear of God and the threat of things to come, let us restrain the senses that are moved and act intemperately.
1:2448
在一切之上,且在一切之先,讓我們記念死亡,以及靈魂離開肉身那可畏的出離;
Above all, and before all, let us remember death, and the fearful departure of the soul from the body;
1:2449
以及黑暗的諸首領、諸掌權者、諸勢力,如何在這空中前來迎擊它(靈魂);
and how, in this air, the principalities and powers and forces of darkness come to meet it;
1:2450
each one dragging and tearing it toward itself, in proportion to the evil affinity that had come to exist, relative to it, through the mediating passion.
1:2451
Let us remember the bitter anguish that comes to the soul in Hades according to conscience, at the memory of the evil deeds it committed through the body.
1:2452
讓我們記念全世界末後的終結,那時,這一切都要被浩大無邊的火焚燒;
Let us remember the final consummation of the whole world, in which this universe is consumed by the great and boundless fire;
1:2453
諸元素因焚燒的熔化而可畏地震動;
the elements being fearfully shaken by the melting of the burning;
1:2454
諸天因懼怕而捲起,急速奔逃,躲避那為了「純淨者」的臨在而預先潔淨受造界的烈火之面;
heaven fleeing in urgent haste, rolled up and in fear, from before the face of the fire that purifies the creation beforehand because of the presence of the Pure One;
1:2455
海洋消失無蹤,大地從深處震動翻騰,毫無減損地交出人類軀體無數的萬萬千千;
the sea vanishing, the earth being convulsed even from its very depths, and yielding up undiminished the boundless myriads of human bodies;
1:2456
讓我們記念那將在基督可畏可懼的審判台前發生的、令人戰慄的答辯之時;
let us remember the dreadful hour of defense that will take place before the fearful and dreadful judgment-seat of Christ;
1:2457
那時,諸天的一切能力,以及自世界創立以來人類的一切受造者,都要察看每個人所擁有的一切,甚至直到一個赤裸的意念;
when all the host of the heavens, and all mankind's creation from the foundation of the age, beholds the things belonging to each one, down to a mere thought;
1:2458
那時,一方面,有些人因其行為的光輝,將被那不可言喻的光所接納;
when, on the one hand, because of the brightness of their works, the ineffable light shall receive some;
1:2459
並且聖而蒙福的三一之光輝將更顯明地照耀在那些因靈魂潔淨而能夠看見並領受它的人身上;
and the radiance of the holy and blessed Trinity, shining forth more clearly, upon those who are able, through purity of soul, to behold and receive it;
1:2460
另一方面,有些人則因其行為的乖謬,將被那外面的黑暗所接納,並有不睡的蟲,以及地獄不滅的火;
but others, because of the absurdity of their works, the outer darkness shall receive, and the unsleeping worm, and the unquenchable fire of Gehenna;
1:2461
and, heaviest of all, the shame in the conscience that has no end.
1:2462
讓我們成為屬於自己也屬於神的人——不如說,惟獨完全屬於神,且全然屬於祂;
and let us become [our own] and God's — or rather, God's alone and wholly, and wholly [His];
1:2463
在自己裡面不帶有任何屬地之物,好叫我們得以親近神,並成為神,這「成為神」乃是從神所領受的;
bearing nothing earthly in ourselves, so that we may draw near to God, and become gods, having received the being gods from God;
1:2464
For thus the divine gifts are honored, and the presence of the divine peace is welcomed with affection.
1:2465
And so much, then, concerning these things.
1:2466
願那藉十字架使我們與自己和好、又用自己的血將我們從黑暗的權勢中救贖出來的和平之神,親自將祂那超乎人所能理解的平安賜給我蒙福的主人,並使他配得祂天上的國度;
May the God of peace, who reconciled us to Himself through the cross, and redeemed us with His own blood from the dominion of darkness, Himself grant His peace, which surpasses all understanding, to my blessed lord, and count him worthy of His heavenly kingdom;
1:2467
where is the dwelling of all who rejoice, and the chorus of those who keep festival.
1:2468
25. By the same [author], to Conon, presbyter and abbot.
1:2469
我相信,正如我所領受並蒙教導的,神就是愛;
I believe, as I received and was taught, that God is love;
1:2470
又相信正如祂自己是一,且從不停止為一,照樣,祂使那些按著祂的愛而生活的人成為一,並賜給他們一個心、一個靈魂,即使他們碰巧為數眾多;
and that, just as He Himself is one and never ceases to be one, so too He makes those who live according to His love one, and grants them one heart and soul, even though they happen to be many;
1:2471
so that, possessing as it were one soul, they may know one another's hearts, and not grow weary searching in ignorance about what is unclear, each one conjecturing from himself the disposition of his neighbor toward him.
1:2472
然而,雖然身體不在,藉著這封書信——我這常在靈裡同在、且從未在靈魂上與你們分離的人——問候你,我按神而言的父親與保護者,也是我救恩的照顧者,並問候你那配得基督國度的聖潔羊群;
But even though I am absent in body, through this present letter — I who am ever present in spirit and never separated from you in soul — I greet you, my father and protector according to God, and the guardian of my salvation, and your holy flock, worthy of the kingdom of Christ;
1:2473
並且我懇求你們為我向主代求,使我能持守一個活潑而見諸行動的信心,不被情慾所殺死,反而擁有祂十字架與死、以及祂埋葬與復活的能力;
and I entreat you to make supplications to the Lord on my behalf, that I may carry off a living and active faith in Him, not deadened by the passions, but possessing the power of His cross and death, and of His burial and resurrection;
1:2474
就十字架而言,是照著在罪上的止息不動;
of the cross, according to the cessation of activity of sin;
1:2475
就死而言,是照著徹底棄絕邪惡;
of death, according to the most complete casting off of wickedness;
1:2476
就埋葬而言,是照著除去靈魂對感官事物的幻想;
of burial, according to the putting away of the soul's fancy concerning things perceived by the senses;
1:2477
and of resurrection, according to the wealth of the virtues, and the abundance of true knowledge of Him, and the raising up of the mind to the heights away from things that perish, so that I may become of one body and one soul with Him.
1:2478
簡而言之,按照祂的應許,在萬事上與祂相似,惟獨在本性上與祂不同一;
And, simply put, according to His promise, like Him in all things, except for identity of nature with Him;
1:2479
so that, by not deadening through works of dishonor the life given to me by Him through the things aforementioned, I may not justly incur the judgment of those who have killed their own life, our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:2480
For it is truly fearful, and beyond all condemnation, willingly to deaden the life given to us by God through the gift of the Holy Spirit, by means of love for perishable things.
1:2481
And this fear is certainly known to those who have practiced preferring the truth to self-love.
1:2482
Of the same [author], to Thalassius the presbyter, who asked how it is that some of the kings among the nations, on account of divinely-sent wrath pressing upon their subject peoples, used to sacrifice their children, even the firstborn, and the wrath would cease, as has been recorded by many of the ancients.
1:2483
神也容許希臘人(外邦人)獲得神諭指引,藉此他們為自己設想出預知將來之事、以及脫離煩擾之事的種種方法;
And God permitted the Greeks to receive oracular responses, by means of the ways they devised for themselves foreknowledge of things to come, and release from things that vexed them;
1:2484
and He often granted that events should turn out for them according to their hopes, preparing the way for all according to providence, as each was able to receive the acceptance of the great mystery that was to come.
1:2485
For if the tender affection of rulers toward their subjects, proceeding to actual deeds, rescued the whole subject people from the calamity that pressed upon them—
1:2486
誠然,當以色列與猶大二王在聖先知以利沙的時代出兵攻打摩押人,並在大獲全勝之後,即將攻陷那全國的都城之際,那地的王便照著外邦人似乎慣常的作法,把自己的兒子帶上城牆,在眾王眼前將他獻為祭;
Indeed, when the kings of Israel and Judah waged war against the Moabites in the time of the holy prophet Elisha, and after a great victory were about to sack the very capital city of that whole kingdom, the king of that land, following, as it seems, the custom of the nations, took his own son and sacrificed him upon the wall before the eyes of the kings;
1:2487
and by this means he propitiated the kings, and persuaded them to turn away from the wrath that had been prepared against him, and he saved his subjects.
1:2488
神容讓希臘人(外邦人)依照他們自主的意思行事,藉此智慧地將這些事據為己用,為要使人接受那大奧祕;
God, then, by permitting the Greeks to carry out the things arising from their own autonomy, wisely turned these to His own use for the acceptance of the great mystery;
1:2489
but to the Israelite people, by giving the Law, He was throughout prefiguring the mystery that was to come.
1:2490
Hence, after the mystery of our salvation was manifested and came into actual operation, He abolished both these things among the Gentiles and those among the Jews — as many as He had given before this time, or had permitted to occur, for the prefiguring of what was to come.
1:2491
因為萬有——凡已成就或將要成就的,無論在何時、以何種方式——都是本於祂、藉著祂、歸於祂;
For from Him, and through Him, and unto Him are all things, whatsoever has come to be or shall come to be, in every time or manner;
1:2492
因此,古人所記載的並非虛構的神話;
That which is recorded by the ancients is, therefore, not a myth;
1:2493
but it truly took place, and the remedy for the sake of which it occurred followed upon it.
1:2494
But as for the detailed treatment of what has been written, let us, God willing, examine it together when I am present with you.
1:2495
Nevertheless, he who has understood how even the flesh of a serpent can, by art, heal the sick, will faithfully accept the method of divine providence.
1:2496
27. Of the same, to John the cubicularius.
1:2497
那些按世俗之道彼此建立起愛情的人,需要彼此肉身的同在,才能維繫這份愛;這是因為遺忘會使一切僅僅建基於肉身之上的渴慕自然而然地枯萎凋謝;
Those who, in a worldly manner, have established love for one another need each other's bodily presence for the preservation of that love, because of forgetfulness, which naturally withers away every longing that is founded on bodies alone;
1:2498
with which the memory of those thus disposed toward one another is naturally extinguished together.
1:2499
And it happens, too, that even this very thing which seems capable of preserving the worldly relationship between them — satiety, once it sets in — dissolves it, obliterating the entire prior disposition.
1:2500
And often, too, the failure of some of the causes that supply it, or even some small pretext that intervenes, brings about a swift turning of a love so constituted into hatred.
1:2501
但那些照著神、藉著愛的紐帶彼此不可解地相繫的人,無論彼此同在或彼此分離,反而更加深這紐帶;
But those who, according to God, have been bound to one another indissolubly by the bond of love, both when together with one another and when absent from one another, rather intensify this bond;
1:2502
因為他們裡面所持有的這份愛,是因著神;祂自己就是愛,也是那將能夠去愛的能力賜給配得之人的那一位;
having this in themselves on account of God, who is Himself love, and who grants to the worthy the power to be able to love;
1:2503
and very justly indeed, as I think.
1:2504
因為凡本性流變不居之事物,那依附於此類事物而彼此相待之人的情意,本性上也隨之一同流逝;
For with things that are by nature in flux, the disposition of those whose relation to one another is founded upon them naturally flows away together with them;
1:2505
但凡穩固且恆常不變之事物,那依附於此類事物而彼此相待之人的情愛,則慣常全然不動搖、不震盪地持續存留;
but with things that are stable and always remain the same, the affection of those whose relation to one another is founded upon them is wont to remain wholly unshaken and unmoved;
1:2506
boundlessly so, to the degree that God, who is the cause of this relationship, is by nature disposed to draw to Himself those who are bound to one another in spirit.
1:2507
In this manner, then, loving you, O most beloved, I hold you ever inseparably present with me in soul, imprinted deep within my spirit — even though the span of time is long and the distance between our places is great — never ceasing to behold and embrace you with the mind.
1:2508
Believing that I am loved by you equally, if not even more, I do not shrink from writing unhesitatingly about whatever there is need to write, knowing that through the Spirit one soul has come to be of us both.
1:2509
and I know that you do not consider yourself insulted upon hearing this, since you reckon the fearful condescension of God toward men to be beyond mind and speech.
1:2510
— and to make one's neighbor so much one's own that he is no longer reckoned as another, in accordance with the reciprocal disposition of those who have been transformed toward one another.
1:2511
因為不僅要與喜樂的人同喜樂,也要與哀哭的人同哀哭;
For [we are commanded] not only to rejoice with those who rejoice, but also to weep with those who weep;
1:2512
也不只是單純地去愛,而是要愛鄰舍如同愛自己——這是神聖的話語所宣示的;
and not simply to love, but to love the neighbor as oneself — so the divine word declares;
1:2513
更不用提那新誡命了,它甚至吩咐人,當爭戰的時候到了,要為著彼此相愛的緣故,捨去自己的靈魂;
not to mention the new commandment, which enjoins even the laying down of our very souls for one another, for love's sake, whenever it is the time to contend;
1:2514
這誡命,那賜下它的主,親自以行動成全了,祂並沒有拒絕為我們捨去自己的靈魂;
which the Lord, who gave it, fulfilled in deed, not refusing to lay down His own soul on our behalf;
1:2515
——為我們立下完全蒙悅納的典範,藉著這典範,自愛的律得以漸漸熄滅;那律最初正是藉著快樂,欺哄地使我們離開神、也離開彼此;
thereby providing us a pattern of perfect well-pleasing, by which the law of self-love is gently extinguished — the law which, at the beginning, deceitfully led us away, through pleasure, from God and from one another;
1:2516
and, having taught that instead of one God there should be reckoned many, or none at all, it utterly cast down the power of the reason within us to the level of the flesh, and, having cut the one nature into many portions, it turned bestial, for pleasure's sake, the power of the anger within us against one another.
1:2517
Become, then, as I have said, all things to him who needs your help, so that you may find God becoming such to you — He who, out of love for mankind, condescends to become all things to all.
1:2518
28. Of the same, to Cyrisicius the bishop.
1:2519
可敬的父啊,你按著所賜給你的大祭司恩典,蒙揀選在地上成為神聖良善的效法者,你未曾使那標誌此良善的任何一種方式落空未全;
Having been allotted, honored Father, in accordance with the grace of the high priesthood given to you, to be on earth an imitator of the divine goodness, you have left unfulfilled none of the ways that characterize it;
1:2520
but, having them all following one another in due order, you have earnestly adorned the mystery of the high priesthood with the tunic of the virtues woven from above through the Spirit.
1:2521
which tunic the demons, though crucifying you with a multitude of trials, are never able to tear
1:2522
Be eager, therefore, to gather together into one the scattered children of God
1:2523
因為這也是神聖良善的一個特徵;
For this too is a characteristic mark of the divine goodness;
1:2524
你既已成為神的聖教會這尊貴身體的頭,就當藉著聖靈的建構,將肢體彼此聯結在一起;
and having become the head of the precious body of the holy Church of God, join the members together with one another through the architecture of the Spirit;
1:2525
並要大聲呼召——你既已被立為神聖教訓的傳令者——無論是遠處的人,或是近處的人;
and call with a great voice, having been established as herald of the divine teachings, both those far off and those near;
1:2526
並要用聖靈之愛那不可解的紐帶,將他們繫縛於你自己身上;
and bind them to yourself with the indissoluble bond of the love of the Spirit;
1:2527
倘若仇敵的期望確已逃逸,且已全然消滅無蹤;
if indeed the expectation of the enemies has fled and has been utterly annihilated;
1:2528
正因這期望,他們竟如此與生身之地疏遠隔絕;
on account of which they had become so estranged from the land that bore them;
1:2529
so that it may be possible for you also to say, in a manner befitting Christ:
1:2530
Behold, I and the children whom God has given me
1:2531
但求聖父你以此事,恩賜你這卑微且不配的僕人與懇求者,得蒙你尊貴的手書(隻字片語);
But deem worthy, holy Father, your humble and unworthy servant and suppliant, of your precious letters concerning this matter;
1:2532
and do not refuse, through your prayers, to commend [me] to God, as you offer a sacrifice of praise
1:2533
29. By the Same [Author], to the Same [Recipient]
1:2534
神因尋找那羊,就從天而降;又因渴慕牠,就披上了羊〔的形體〕;
God, seeking [the sheep], descended from heaven, and, longing [for it], put on the sheep;
1:2535
and thus, having saved the one that had gone astray, placing it upon his shoulders, he compassionately led it back to those of the same fold
1:2536
But you, all-holy Father and shepherd, having filled with the Holy Spirit alone the reed [pipe] of your teaching, led back to yourself whole the flock of rational sheep, which had departed from its homeland involuntarily, yet runs voluntarily to your voice as the good and skilled shepherd, as one possessing perfect discernment of what is beneficial.
1:2537
因為牠並非因迷失而橫渡遙遠的海洋,也非輕忽了那神聖的牧場;
For it did not, having gone astray, cross the vast seas, having disdained the divine pasture;
1:2538
but for the sake of the saving safety of the divine treasures of the soul which pertain to it
1:2539
但求你接納這群羊——牠們不僅未曾遭狼群踐踏,反倒成了狼群的剿滅者,並且在關乎靈魂的諸般美善上大得豐富;
But receive the flock, which has not only remained untrodden by wolves, but has also become a destroyer of wolves, and is enriched with many goods pertaining to the soul;
1:2540
你當開弓,亨通,且要作王,是為真理、溫柔、公義的緣故;
And bend your bow, and prosper, and reign, for the sake of truth and meekness and righteousness;
1:2541
作為敬虔之神聖教義的教師,作純潔生活與端莊行止的引導者,並在萬事上作眾人正確分辨的立法者;
as teacher of the divine doctrines of piety, and guide of a pure life and dignified conduct, and lawgiver of right discernment for all in everything;
1:2542
尤其是連同前述聖潔羊群一併帶回的,還有那已被聖化的主、長老阿爸喬治——一位聖潔之人,其生活與其言論相稱;
having taken along, especially with the aforesaid sacred flock, also the sanctified lord abba George the presbyter, a sacred man who possesses a life equal to his word;
1:2543
and being, through both [word and life], a destroyer of the evil power
1:2544
但因我已被莫大的憂傷所吞沒,無法承受與他們分離之苦,求你們或是也將我收納,使我得安息於你們的翅膀之下;
But since I have been overwhelmed with great grief, unable to bear separation from these, either take me too, and grant me rest under your wings;
1:2545
or strengthen me, through your prayers, to bear nobly the pain that comes from separation from those most dear [to me]
1:2546
30. By the Same [Author], to Bishop John
1:2547
那些以理性省察萬有之本性者說,火的能力乃是能吸引一切在其下之基質者;
Those who have rationally examined the nature of beings say that the power of fire is attractive of every substance that underlies it;
1:2548
那些神聖奧祕的詮釋者,將神象徵性地比擬於此〔火〕,也照樣說:凡願意順服祂律法、且甘願擁抱敬虔生活者,祂也同樣具有吸引之力;
comparing God symbolically to this [fire], the interpreters of the divine mysteries likewise say that He too is attractive of all who wish to be persuaded by His laws, and who consent to embrace living a holy life;
1:2549
toward whom [God], as they say the priesthood exists as an image aptly bearing his likeness in an icon, they likewise declare that it too, by the same law of compassion according to grace, is attractive of all who are under the same nature
1:2550
聖父啊,你既蒙抽籤而在地上持有此〔司祭職〕作為神的肖像,就當以憐憫的態度與言語,召喚那些渴望歸向你、並照其禱告切願受你牧養之人;
This [priesthood], then, holy Father, you too, having obtained by lot to bear as God's image upon earth, call to yourself by manners and words of compassion those who long to return to you, and who desire, in accordance with their prayers, to be shepherded by you;
1:2551
並藉著你尊貴的手書,以真實的應許,確認你偕同神在萬事上向他們所施的眷顧;
and confirm, through your precious letters, by true promises, your providence toward them, together with God, in all things;
1:2552
倘若仇敵那腥臭的期望確已全然歸於烏有;
if indeed the foul-smelling expectation of the enemies has utterly come to naught;
1:2553
on account of which they endured so great a flight, those who considered it safe to follow the law of God, which cries out explicitly:
1:2554
若有人在這城逼迫你們,就逃到那城去;
If they persecute you in this city, flee into another;
1:2555
且已將可嘉的怯懦,看得比魯莽更為可取;
having preferred praiseworthy timidity to rashness;
1:2556
使他們在神以下,因信賴你的言語,得以無所畏懼地踏上歸途;
so that, next after God, trusting in your words, they might make their return without fear;
1:2557
and that they might find, in this fearful sojourn abroad, relief from the labors under which they were oppressed for the sake of virtue and of obeying God, who commands those who are persecuted to flee — [finding] your merciful ordering of all things concerning them
1:2558
聖父啊,求你不要拒絕接納你這懇求你的僕人與求告者;
Do not, therefore, holy Father, refuse to receive your suppliant and servant who entreats [you];
1:2559
並求你藉著禱告,將我託付於那獨一尊貴的基督——祂親自使那卑賤的人得享尊貴之至;
and commend [me], through your prayers, to Christ, who alone is precious, and who through himself has richly honored dishonored man;
1:2560
31. By the Same [Author], to the Same [Recipient]
1:2561
正如光線溫柔地吸引那按本性以光為樂的健康視力,並分賜其自身的光輝與之——真實的司祭職也是如此:它在萬事上皆是那蒙福神性向地上世人所顯的標記,將一切按其秉性而愛神且神聖的靈魂吸引歸向自己,並將自身的知識、平安與愛分賜給牠;
Just as a ray of light gently draws to itself the healthy eye, which by nature rejoices in light, and imparts to it a share of its own brightness — so too true priesthood, being in all respects a distinguishing mark of the blessed Godhead to those on earth, draws to itself every soul that is, by disposition, God-loving and divine, and imparts to it a share of its own knowledge, peace, and love;
1:2562
so that, toward the completion of its own operation, having brought forth each power of the soul [to its proper end], it may present to God, deified throughout, those who are initiated into the mysteries by it
1:2563
因為靈魂理性運作的終末,乃是真實的知識;
For the end of the rational operation of the soul is true knowledge;
